  • TCU to Retire Bane’s Jersey

FORT WORTH – TCU Athletics will retire the jersey of Desmond Bane at a halftime ceremony during TCU’s men’s basketball game with Texas Tech on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.

A two-time All-Big 12 Conference selection, Bane played four seasons at TCU from 2016-2020. He left TCU a college graduate and the Horned Frogs’ all-time leader in 3-pointers (249), wins (84) and games played (141). Bane also ranks third all-time in points with 1,784, third with 659 made field goals and fifth with a 3-point percentage of 43.3.

Starting as a zero-star recruit from Seton Catholic High School in Richmond, Ind., Bane helped TCU win the 2017 NIT as a freshman, the program’s first postseason championship. As a sophomore, he helped TCU make its first NCAA Tournament in 20 years while averaging 12.5 points and leading the Big 12 in 3-point accuracy at 46.1 percent.

As a junior, Bane was All-Big 12 Second Team by the league’s coaches and Associated Press and was USBWA All-District VII as he averaged 15.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists. His 1,315 minutes played was the most in program history.

As a senior in 2019-20, Bane averaged 16.6 points, which ranked second in the Big 12. He also finished with 6.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists on the way to becoming the first TCU player to earn All-Big 12 First Team as he was recognized by both the coaches and Associated Press. He also earned USBWA All-District VII and NABC All-District 8 honors.

Bane, who played in a Big 12 leading 36.02 minutes per game as a senior, never missed a game in his career and missed just one practice in his four years.

Bane was the second player in program history to be selected in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft as he was the 30th overall selection to the Boston Celtics, which traded the rights to Memphis. He’s currently in his fifth season with the Grizzlies. Last season, he averaged a career-best 23.7 points per game and shot 38.1 from 3-point range.

The Texas Christian University Horned Frogs have announced that they will be retiring the jersey of former star player, Desmond Bane. Bane, who played for TCU from 2016-2020, was a standout on the court and left a lasting impact on the program.

During his time at TCU, Bane was named to the All-Big 12 First Team and was the leading scorer for the team. He helped lead the Horned Frogs to multiple postseason appearances and was known for his clutch shooting and leadership on the court.

The decision to retire Bane’s jersey comes as no surprise to fans and alumni, as his contributions to the program were truly exceptional. TCU will honor Bane’s legacy with a special ceremony during an upcoming game, where his jersey will be raised to the rafters alongside other TCU greats.

Bane’s jersey retirement serves as a reminder of the impact he had on the program and the lasting legacy he left behind. Fans are encouraged to come out and show their support for Bane as his jersey is retired in recognition of his outstanding contributions to TCU basketball.

The Bears have had an interesting season. Baylor holds a 2-4 record against ranked opponents, opening the year with a 38-point loss to Gonzaga. Wins over Arkansas and St. Johns stabilized their non conference slate.

Road losses to Iowa State and Arizona are their blemishes in conference play, but the Bears have 20+ point wins over Utah and Cincinnati on their ledger as well.

The Bears are an excellent offensive rebounding team, pulling down 13.7 per game. They couple that with being effective in the paint on offense, scoring about 37 points per game down low.

Baylor pairs that with several sharpshooters, and as a team the Bears are shooting 36.4% from 3-point range.

    Bears to Know

Baylor has five players averaging double-figures in scoring this season, led by Miami transfer Norchad Omier at 15.5 points per game. Omier, a 6-7 wing whose career began at Arkansas State, is also bringing in 10.2 rebounds per game, tied for first in the Big 12 with Kansas’ Hunter Dickinson. Omier also leads the Bears with 17 blocked shots this season.

Freshman guard VJ Edgecombe looks to be a one-and-done in college, as he’s projected as a top 10 lottery pick by most major NBA prospect evaluators. Edgecombe is second on Baylor in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game, while also pulling down 5.7 rebounds.

Center Josh Ojianwuna has stepped into a starting role this year and is performing well, averaging 8.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Robert Wright is having an excellent first campaign, averaging 12.4 points and 4.6 assists per game as a facilitator off the bench.

    How TCU Can Win

TCU has to play their best basketball of the season, similar to how they played in the first half against BYU. Defensively, the Frogs need to be aggressive on the perimeter closing out on shooters, and they need to get a body on Omier when shots go up.

TCU’s interior defense also needs to be ready to help, and the weak side rotations need to be on time, something that wasn’t the case against Utah.

Offensively, the ball can’t get stuck. TCU needs to play aggressively to create open shots.

All in all, this is a tough challenge for the Frogs, who are looking to get back to .500 in Big 12 play this season.

    Prediction: Baylor 78, TCU 65

    What to Know

After two games on the road, Baylor is heading back home. They and the TCU Horned Frogs will face off in a Big 12 battle at 5:00 p.m. ET on Sunday at Foster Pavilion. The Bears are strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 81.4 points per game this season.

Last Tuesday, Baylor came up short against Arizona and fell 81-70.

The loss doesn’t tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Josh Ojianwuna, who scored eight points along with six rebounds and two steals. Robert O. Wright III was another key player, earning 16 points.

Meanwhile, TCU entered their match against Utah on Wednesday without any home losses, but there’s a first time for everything. TCU fell 73-65 to Utah. The Horned Frogs didn’t live up to their potential and found themselves falling short of the advantage oddsmakers thought they had coming into the game.

Like TCU, they lost despite seeing results from several players. Vasean Allette led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on 19 points and nine rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Allette a new career-high in offensive rebounds (four).

Baylor’s loss dropped their record down to 11-5. As for TCU, their defeat ended a nine-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 9-7.

Looking ahead, Baylor is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 12.5 points. For those looking to play the spread, take note: they are a solid 5-2 against the spread when playing at home.

Baylor beat TCU 62-54 in their previous matchup back in February of 2024. Will Baylor repeat their success, or does TCU have a better game plan this time around? We’ll find out soon enough.

TCU vs Baylor College Basketball Betting Preview

Waco is the site of a Sunday Big 12 battle between two teams right in the thick of the conference standings. Baylor comes in off a loss at Arizona and will look to get right at home. Meanwhile, TCU fell to Utah in Fort Worth and now looks to score its first road win of the season.

Baylor ranks as the biggest “paper tiger” in Haslametrics, a metric that measures a team’s ability to play up to the level of its competition. The Bears play far better against inferior competition. In Big 12 play, Baylor has pounded Cincy by 20 and Utah by 25 – both games came in Waco.

TCU very much falls in the “inferior competition” category.

The Bears could still be light on depth with Jalen Celestine and Langston Love on the shelf. Head coach Scott Drew has essentially played a six-man rotation in the past few games.

With the pace Baylor plays at, this shouldn’t be a major issue, and Baylor’s top six is very talented.

The offensive glass will be a huge edge for the Bears in this one, with Norchad Omier and John Ojianwuna acting as a two-man wrecking crew on the boards.

Baylor’s attack is balanced, but it revolves around the pick-and-roll, with an emphasis on the roll. Omier and Ojianwuna are two of the best ball-screen partners in the country by efficiency.

TCU’s defense needs to show up for it to have a chance, but unfortunately, the Frogs are due for some negative defensive shooting regression. The Frogs rank 283rd in 3-point attempt rate allowed but 20th in 3-point percentage. Plus, Baylor has plenty of shooting.

Baylor’s talent edge is significant. Freshman star VJ Edgecombe hasn’t been amazing this year, but the potential is clearly there, and he’s an offensive weapon. Robert Wright III is getting better every day with big-time backcourt minutes, and Omier, Jeremy Roach and Jayden Nunn are the steady vets holding the whole operation together.

TCU is treading water in Big 12 play, but just barely. The Frogs have shown an inability to win on the road, sitting at 0-3 on the year (1-2 against the spread).

On offense, TCU needs to get to the rim. Per CBB Analytics, the Frogs rank 33rd in field goal attempt rate near the cup, and they also settle for a lot of mid-range jumpers. They have a severe lack of outside shooting, but on the plus side, they don’t turn it over.

Baylor’s zone will be a huge challenge for TCU. The Frogs have scored just 0.724 PPP against zone this season (Synergy), good for 346th in the country. Baylor defends the very thing TCU wants to do; per CBB Analytics, the Bears rank fifth in field goal attempt rate allowed at the rim this year.

And if TCU starts settling/forcing outside shots, it won’t get many second chances with its dearth of offensive rebounding ability.

Baylor should take this game in stride and stay within an arm’s length of the top dogs in the Big 12. TCU will slide closer to the bottom of the standings, where it’ll likely end up in March.

The Bears have been dominant on both ends of the court, with their suffocating defense and efficient offense.

In terms of predictions, this game is shaping up to be a close and competitive battle. Both teams have the talent and depth to pull off a win, but Baylor’s undefeated record and strong play throughout the season give them a slight edge in this matchup. However, TCU’s experience and ability to shoot the three-pointer at a high rate could keep them in the game.

As for picks, taking Baylor to win straight up may be the safer bet, but TCU could potentially cover the spread if they can keep the game close. The odds for this game are likely to be close, given the talent and competitiveness of both teams.

Overall, this game is sure to be an exciting one to watch, with two top-ranked teams battling it out on the court. Be sure to tune in on Sunday to see who comes out on top in this highly anticipated matchup.
