Seven-round mock drafts for all 32 NFL teams
The 2025 NFL Draft is quickly approaching, and every team is looking to build for the future. Whether it’s finding a franchise quarterback, adding playmakers or shoring up the trenches, each NFL franchise will have its own unique strategy when on the clock.
With that in mind, we’ve put together seven-round mock drafts for all 32 teams, addressing key needs and projecting how each roster could take shape after draft weekend. From top prospects to late-round steals, here’s how every team could attack the 2025 NFL Draft.
JUMP TO A TEAM:

Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals head into the 2025 NFL Draft with plenty of work to do, particularly on defense. While defensive coordinator Nick Rallis did an admirable job maximizing his personnel in 2024, the unit simply needs more playmakers.
Arizona’s pass rush struggled all season, generating pressure on just 201 plays — ranking 26th in the NFL. Even if 2024 first-round pick Darius Robinson develops into a solid contributor, the Cardinals still lack a consistent edge rusher who can win one-on-one matchups.
Beyond the pass rush, the secondary also needs an upgrade. The Cardinals finished 28th in EPA allowed per play, 31st in success rate and 17th in team coverage grade in 2024.
With $82 million in cap space, the Cardinals have the flexibility to target a top-tier cornerback like D.J. Reed in free agency while using the draft to shore up their offensive and defensive fronts. With glaring needs at guard, offensive tackle, defensive interior and edge rusher, Arizona must make the most of its draft capital to build a more complete roster for 2025 and beyond.

Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens‘ two biggest offseason needs appear to be offensive tackle (with the likely free-agent departure of current left tackle Ronnie Stanley) and edge defender. The 2025 NFL Draft looks to be a great place to address both, as there should be depth and value at each position in the early rounds.
Beyond those two critical needs, look for Baltimore to add another outside cornerback this offseason via the draft or free agency, as well as bring in a viable third receiver. We address all of those areas of concern in this mock draft.

Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears head into the 2025 NFL Draft with a clear mission: address key roster gaps and build on the defensive promise they showcased in 2024.
While the offense struggled to find its rhythm, the defense was a relative bright spot, ranking 11th in EPA allowed per play. Standout performances from free-agent safety Kevin Byard and second-year defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr. hint at a foundation worth building on.
With needs along the offensive line, defensive line and at running back, general manager Ryan Poles will have ample opportunity to reshape the roster. Armed with the seventh-most cap space in the league and a history of aggressive spending, the Bears could pair their draft capital with free agency moves to retool for a brighter 2025 campaign.
Here’s how they can make the most of their selections in this mock draft.

Cincinnati Bengals
Despite boasting one of the most explosive offenses in the league, the Cincinnati Bengals missed the playoffs again—largely due to deficiencies on defense.
While edge rusher Trey Hendrickson ranked second in the NFL with 83 total pressures, the Bengals ranked just 23rd overall in that category. Their struggles extended to coverage and run defense, as they ranked 27th in passing touchdown percentage allowed and 28th in rushing first downs allowed.
Offensive line play remains a concern, too. Not a single Bengals starter ranked in the top 30 at their positions in run blocking, and the unit as a whole finished 27th in pass-blocking efficiency.
Here’s a look at how Cincinnati could use the draft to address some of its most pressing weaknesses on both sides of the ball.

Cleveland Browns
Complications with Deshaun Watson’s recovery from an Achilles injury have seemingly opened the door for the Cleveland Browns to consider selecting a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. However, that’s just one of several key concerns for Cleveland, as holes remain on both sides of the ball.
With limited flexibility in free agency, the Browns will likely rely on their draft capital to address multiple needs, including offensive tackle, cornerback and wide receiver.

Detroit Lions
A franchise-best 15-2 regular season ended abruptly in the divisional round of the playoffs, leaving a bit of an empty feeling for the Lions’ faithful.
While there’s plenty of reason for optimism heading into 2025 — despite the departure of both coordinators — uncertainty remains regarding the roster on both sides of the ball.
Several key defensive players — including Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, and Malcolm Rodriguez — are expected to return for the 2025 season. However, the Lions must decide how to handle the expiring contracts of cornerback Carlton Davis, interior defender Levi Onwuzurike and right guard Kevin Zeitler.
When it comes to the draft, the Lions should prioritize strengthening the defense—particularly by adding legitimate pass-rush complements for Hutchinson. This seven-round mock explores how Detroit could not only address that need twice but also bolster all three levels of the defense.

Green Bay Packers
With availability (Jaire Alexander), performance (Eric Stokes) and the general explosiveness of NFC North offenses posing significant concerns, the Packers need to consider making some significant additions this offseason at cornerback.
On the other side of the ball, similar issues plagued the wide receiver group. Two receivers, Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks, ranked in the bottom seven of the league in drops in 2024, while deep threat Christian Watson’s torn ACL leaves his status for the start of the 2025 season in doubt.
With significant questions at both positions, the Packers will likely address their needs through a combination of free agency and the draft. Here is an example of how they can revamp both rooms exclusively through the draft in April.

Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings had an outstanding regular season, but their weaknesses were exposed by division rival Detroit in Week 18 and again by the Rams in the wild-card round. Heading into the offseason, Minnesota must shore up the interior of the offensive line while also addressing several key needs on defense.
The Vikings currently hold just five draft picks, but with a healthy cap situation, they are expected to be active in free agency come March. This mock draft explores how they could address some of their biggest needs this offseason.

Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers’ offseason starts with determining what to do at quarterback. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are free agents, and neither was able to elevate Pittsburgh to a true contender level last season. The Steelers could choose to bring one (or both) of them back or attack the free-agent pool, but picking 21st overall means the 2025 NFL Draft is not a feasible option for finding a Day 1 starter.
The draft could provide the team with talented offensive playmakers, though. Pittsburgh will also need a plan for its departing running backs, likely leading them to draft one. The team’s wide receiver group was very underwhelming in 2024, so expect the franchise to spend its customary second-round pick on upgrading the position.
The secondary could also use upgrades, and the trenches need another infusion of depth. In this mock draft, the Steelers address all of these needs and more.

San Francisco 49ers
An injury-riddled and disappointing 2024 season gives way to the eternal optimism of the offseason for the San Francisco 49ers. However, with at least three defensive starters likely to hit free agency and an aging, underperforming offensive line, plenty of work must be done.
The star power remains on offense, but expect San Francisco to aggressively target both sides of the trenches in this year’s draft as they look to reclaim their spot atop the NFC West.

As a senior, he earned National Special Teams Player of the Year by George Michael Sports Machine, a popular national sports show at the time.
Ekeler went on to coach at a number of collegiate programs, including Indiana, USC, Georgia, North Carolina, and Kansas. He spent three seasons in Lincoln under coach Bo Pelini, leading the linebackers.
During his time in Lincoln, Nebraska won or shared the Big 12 Conference North Division every season. Ekeler aided in some of the best Husker defenses of the 21st century. In 2010, Nebraska was fifth nationally in pass defense (153.6), ninth in scoring defense (17.4) and 11th in total defense (306.8). In 2009, the Cornhuskers led the country in scoring defense (10.4) and pass efficiency defense, while ranking seventh in total defense (271.3) and eighth in rushing defense (92.43).

Tennessee will have a void to feel on its coaching staff this offseason, after all.
Mike Ekeler, who has served as the Vols’ special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach the last four seasons, is leaving the program for the same role at Nebraska.
TALK ABOUT IT IN THE ROCKY TOP FORUM
InsideNebraska confirmed reports of Ekeler’s departure Monday.
A Nebraska native, it will be a reunion for Ekeler, who coached at the school as its linebackers coach under former Cornhuskers head coach Bo Pelini from 2008-10.
Ekeler had assistant coaching stints at Indiana, Southern California, Georgia, North Texas, North Carolina and Kansas before joining Josh Heupel‘s inaugural staff at Tennessee in 2021.
Ekeler was one of three assistant coaches whose contracts were set to expire at the end of January. Defensive coordinator Tim Banks signed an extension with the Vols late last month after leading a top 10 unit on the way to Tennessee’s first-ever College Football Playoff appearance.
Ekeler and defensive backs coach Willie Martinez were the remaining coaches who at least had a publicly announced contract extension.
The Vols’ were nearing spring practices without any coaching turnover for the first time in more than four seasons. Tennessee lost wide receivers coach Kodi Burns to the NFL after one season in 2021 and offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Alex Golesh took the head coaching job at USF following the Vols’ record-setting season in 2022.
Both running backs coach Jerry Mack and linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary left for the same roles in the NFL and Michigan, respectively at the end of the 2023 season.
In three of those cases, Heupel promoted from within, elevating analyst Kelsey Pope to coach wide receivers and quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle to offensive coordinator, while moving Alec Abeln from an analyst role to tight ends coach.
Tennessee hired De’Rail Sims away from Louisville to coach running backs and William Inge from Washington to fill the linebackers coach role last offseason.
It remains unclear what direction Heupel will go in to replace Ekeler. The Vols averaged 15.7 yards per punt return in 2024—good for ninth among FBS teams–while allowing 6.7 yards per return.
Tennessee special teams coach Mike Ekeler has announced that he will be leaving the Volunteers to join the coaching staff at Nebraska. Ekeler, who has been with Tennessee since 2018, has helped lead the special teams unit to great success during his time with the program. In a statement, Ekeler expressed his gratitude for his time at Tennessee and his excitement for the opportunity to return to Nebraska, where he previously coached from 2008-2010. He thanked the players, coaches, and fans for their support and said he looks forward to the next chapter in his coaching career.
During his tenure at Tennessee, Ekeler’s special teams unit has been a key part of the team’s success, consistently ranking among the best in the SEC. His departure is sure to be felt by the Volunteers, but Nebraska fans are surely thrilled to welcome him back to the program.
We wish Coach Ekeler the best of luck in his new role at Nebraska and thank him for his contributions to the Tennessee football program.

#Tennessee #special #teams #coach #Mike #Ekeler #leaving #NebraskaMatt Rhule set to hire Mike Ekeler as special teams coordinator
Nebraska football and head coach Matt Rhule have found its next special teams coordinator.
Inside Nebraska can confirm Mike Ekeler will lead Nebraska’s special teams in 2025. Ekeler spent the past four years on Josh Heupel’s staff at Tennessee as special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach.
Ekeler has plenty of ties to the state of Nebraska and the Husker football program. He’s from David City and coached Nebraska’s linebackers for three seasons for Bo Pelini from 2008-10.
Ekeler replaces former Nebraska special teams coordinator Ed Foley, who Rhule hired to his first staff in December 2022 but was let go by Rhule in early January upon his contract expiring on Dec. 31, 2024. That decision came after the Huskers’ major two-year struggles on special teams, the worst of which came during the 2024 season and ultimately culminated in the biggest breaking point – game-changing mistakes by the special teams units that paved the way for the Huskers’ 13-10 loss at Iowa in November.
Rhule is now turning to Ekeler in the mission to turn things around on those special teams units.

He has previously held positions at schools such as Georgia, Nebraska, USC, and Indiana, where he helped develop some of the top special teams units in the country.
Rhule’s decision to bring Ekeler on board is a strategic move aimed at bolstering Baylor’s special teams performance and overall success on the field. With Ekeler’s leadership and guidance, the Bears are sure to see improvements in their kicking, punting, and return game.

76ers Trade Rumors: Knicks, Celtics, Nuggets Among Teams Eyeing Guerschon Yabusele | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Mitchell Leff/Getty Images
Guerschon Yabusele is garnering trade interest in his second stint in the NBA.
The Philadelphia Inquirer‘s Keith Pompey named Yabusele as the Philadelphia 76ers’ “most enticing trade target for opposing teams” ahead of the Feb. 6 deadline.
Pompey named the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets as teams interested in acquiring the former 2016 first-round pick.
Yabusele began his NBA career by playing two seasons with the Boston Celtics before the team waived him in the summer of 2019.
He spent several years playing professionally in China, France and Spain before the Sixers brought Yabusele back to the NBA on a one-year veteran minimum contract.
Having played his way into a starting role while averaging 10.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, Yabusele has likely out-earned his $2 million salary this season.
The Sixers likely aren’t in a position to give him a raise next season after committing to pay more than $135 million to Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey in 2025-26.
Deciding whether to take advantage of the jump in Yabusele’s value to trade him this winter could hinge on if the Sixers see themselves as a postseason contender.
Heading into Sunday with a 19-28 record, the Sixers one game back from the Chicago Bulls for the last play-in spot in the Eastern Conference.
If the Sixers decide to push for the play-in round, keeping Yabusele, who played well during a recent four-game winning streak that lifted Philadelphia closer to the playoff picture, could be key to the team’s postseason hopes.
If Philadelphia decides to sell at the deadline, however, the team could be better served by taking advantage of Yabusele’s value to a win-now team by picking up draft assets.
SNY’s Ian Begley previously reported that the Knicks had checked in with the Sixers regarding Yabusele, and that his .400 shooting on 3.9 attempted 3-pointers per game could “benefit a Knick team that wants to keep the floor spread on offense.”
The Nuggets have been in need of frontcourt depth throughout the 2024-25 season. Denver’s bench has contributed 10.2 points per game, good for 27th in the NBA, through 49 games this season. Adding Yabusele as a depth option behind Nikola Jokić could help this team gear up for a playoff run.
The Celtics added to their frontcourt depth ahead of the 2024 trade deadline by adding Xavier Tillman Sr., but Tillman’s playing time has dropped to an average of just seven minutes through 26 games so far this season. Replacing him with Yabusele could be a bench upgrade for the defending champions.
The Philadelphia 76ers have been a hot topic of discussion in recent days as rumors swirl around potential trades involving forward Guerschon Yabusele. Several teams, including the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, and Denver Nuggets, are reportedly interested in acquiring the talented young player.Yabusele, a former first-round draft pick, has shown flashes of potential during his time with the 76ers, but has struggled to find consistent playing time on a deep roster. With the trade deadline approaching, Philadelphia may be looking to move Yabusele in exchange for assets that can help bolster their playoff push.
The Knicks, Celtics, and Nuggets are all in need of frontcourt depth and could benefit from adding a player like Yabusele to their roster. While no trade has been finalized yet, discussions are said to be ongoing and a deal could materialize in the coming days.
Stay tuned for more updates on the 76ers trade rumors involving Guerschon Yabusele, as news, scores, highlights, stats, and rumors continue to develop.

The Importance of Training and Development for Technical Support Teams
In today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, technical support teams play a crucial role in ensuring that businesses run smoothly and efficiently. These teams are responsible for providing timely assistance and solutions to customers and internal employees when they encounter technical issues with software, hardware, or other IT-related problems. In order for technical support teams to effectively perform their roles, it is essential that they receive ongoing training and development.Training and development for technical support teams are important for several reasons. Firstly, technology is constantly evolving, and new software, tools, and systems are being introduced regularly. In order to stay abreast of these changes, technical support teams need to continuously update their skills and knowledge. Training programs can help them acquire the necessary expertise to troubleshoot and resolve issues efficiently.
Secondly, providing training and development opportunities can boost employee morale and job satisfaction. When technical support teams feel supported and empowered through training, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated in their work. This, in turn, can lead to improved customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Additionally, training and development can help technical support teams improve their problem-solving skills and enhance their ability to think critically and creatively. By participating in training programs, team members can learn new techniques and strategies for approaching complex technical issues, which can ultimately lead to faster resolution times and improved customer service.
Furthermore, investing in training and development for technical support teams can also help organizations reduce turnover and retain top talent. Employees who feel that their skills are being valued and developed are more likely to stay with a company long-term. This can save businesses time and resources that would otherwise be spent on recruiting and training new employees.
In conclusion, training and development for technical support teams are essential for ensuring that businesses can effectively address technical issues and provide excellent customer service. By investing in ongoing training programs, organizations can empower their technical support teams to stay ahead of the curve, improve their problem-solving skills, and ultimately drive better business outcomes.
Common Challenges Faced by Technical Support Teams
Technical support teams play a crucial role in ensuring that customers receive prompt and effective assistance with their technical issues. However, these teams often face a number of challenges that can make their jobs more difficult. In this article, we will explore some of the common challenges faced by technical support teams and discuss potential solutions to overcome them. One of the most common challenges faced by technical support teams is dealing with a high volume of customer inquiries. With the increasing complexity of technology and the growing reliance on digital devices, technical support teams are often inundated with requests for assistance. This can lead to long wait times for customers and increased pressure on support staff to resolve issues quickly.
To address this challenge, technical support teams can implement strategies to streamline their processes and improve efficiency. This may include implementing a ticketing system to track and prioritize customer inquiries, providing self-service options for common technical issues, and investing in training and development programs to improve the skills of support staff.
Another common challenge faced by technical support teams is the need to stay up-to-date with constantly evolving technology. As new products and software updates are released, support teams must quickly familiarize themselves with these changes in order to provide effective assistance to customers. This can be a daunting task, especially for teams that are already stretched thin with their existing workload.
To address this challenge, technical support teams can invest in ongoing training and education programs to ensure that staff are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills. Additionally, teams can establish relationships with product manufacturers and vendors to stay informed about upcoming releases and changes in technology.
Communication can also be a significant challenge for technical support teams. In many cases, support staff must communicate complex technical information to customers in a clear and understandable manner. This can be challenging, especially when dealing with customers who may not have a technical background or who are frustrated with their technical issues.
To improve communication, technical support teams can provide training for staff on effective communication techniques and customer service skills. Additionally, teams can develop standardized scripts and templates for common technical issues to ensure consistency in their interactions with customers.
In conclusion, technical support teams face a number of challenges in their day-to-day operations. By implementing strategies to streamline processes, stay up-to-date with technology, and improve communication, support teams can overcome these challenges and provide better service to customers. Ultimately, a well-equipped and well-trained technical support team can make a significant impact on customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Improving Your Technical Support Team’s Efficiency and Effectiveness
Having a strong and efficient technical support team is essential for any organization that relies on technology to operate. A well-functioning support team can help resolve technical issues quickly and effectively, minimizing downtime and keeping operations running smoothly. However, even the most talented and experienced support team can benefit from strategies to improve their efficiency and effectiveness. Here are some tips for enhancing your technical support team’s performance:1. Invest in training and professional development: Providing ongoing training and development opportunities for your support team members can help them stay up-to-date on the latest technologies and best practices. This can improve their problem-solving skills and make them more effective at resolving technical issues. Encourage team members to pursue certifications and attend industry conferences to expand their knowledge and skills.
2. Implement a knowledge base: Creating a centralized knowledge base can help your support team access important information quickly and easily. This can include troubleshooting guides, FAQs, and other resources that can help team members resolve common technical issues without having to reinvent the wheel. A knowledge base can also help new team members get up to speed more quickly and provide consistent support to customers.
3. Use ticketing systems: Implementing a ticketing system can help your support team track and prioritize technical issues more efficiently. This can help ensure that no issues fall through the cracks and that team members are able to respond to requests in a timely manner. Ticketing systems can also provide valuable data on response times, resolution rates, and customer satisfaction, allowing you to identify areas for improvement.
4. Foster a collaborative team environment: Encouraging collaboration and communication among team members can help improve efficiency and effectiveness. Create opportunities for team members to share knowledge and expertise, such as regular team meetings or brainstorming sessions. Encourage team members to work together to solve complex technical issues and support each other when facing challenges.
5. Monitor performance and provide feedback: Regularly monitoring your support team’s performance can help you identify areas for improvement and provide feedback to team members. Effective Network Management Best Practices for IT Teams
Network management is a critical aspect of IT operations in any organization. A well-managed network ensures that all systems and devices are connected and communicating efficiently, leading to increased productivity and security. To achieve this, IT teams must follow best practices in network management to ensure the smooth running of their organization’s network infrastructure. Here are some effective network management best practices for IT teams to follow:
1. Regular Monitoring and Maintenance: IT teams should conduct regular monitoring of network performance and security to identify any issues or potential threats. This includes monitoring bandwidth usage, network traffic, and device connectivity. Proactive maintenance and troubleshooting can help prevent network outages and downtime.
2. Network Documentation: IT teams should maintain accurate documentation of the network infrastructure, including network diagrams, device configurations, and IP addresses. This documentation helps in troubleshooting network issues more efficiently and ensures that any changes to the network are well-documented.
3. Network Security: Security is a top priority in network management. IT teams should implement firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and other security measures to protect the network from cyber threats. Regular security audits and updates are essential to ensure the network is secure at all times.
4. Configuration Management: IT teams should implement configuration management tools to manage and track changes to network devices and configurations. This helps in ensuring consistency across the network and reduces the risk of configuration errors that could lead to network downtime.
5. Network Performance Optimization: IT teams should optimize network performance by implementing Quality of Service (QoS) policies, load balancing, and traffic shaping techniques. This helps in prioritizing network traffic, reducing bottlenecks, and ensuring optimal performance for critical applications.
6. Disaster Recovery Planning: IT teams should have a disaster recovery plan in place to ensure business continuity in case of network outages or disasters. This includes regular backups, redundant network connections, and failover mechanisms to minimize downtime and data loss.
7. Regular Training and Skill Development: IT teams should invest in regular training and skill development for network administrators to stay updated on the latest networking technologies and best practices. This helps in ensuring that the IT team is well-equipped to manage the network effectively.
By following these effective network management best practices, IT teams can ensure a secure, reliable, and high-performing network infrastructure for their organization. Proper network management not only improves productivity and efficiency but also enhances the overall security posture of the organization. It is essential for IT teams to prioritize network management as a critical aspect of their operations to ensure the success of their organization.
Mid-Season Grades For Big Ten Men’s Basketball Teams
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Eight of the Big Ten’s 18 schools have reached the 10-game halfway point of the 20-game Big Ten men’s basketball season, and the rest will hit it this week.
Hoosiers On SI took a look at where each Big Ten stands as they make the turn for the second half of the Big Ten season and assigned mid-season grades for each school.
Michigan State
Jan 9, 2025; East Lansing, Michigan, USA; Michigan State Spartans guard Jaden Akins (3) puts a shot off the glass against the Washington Huskies during the second half at Jack Breslin Student Events Center. / Dale Young-Imagn Images • Record: 18-2 overall, 9-0 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 5th.
• Current Big Ten position: 1st.
• Overview: Last year, Michigan State was supposed to be good because of a flashy backcourt trio. Big Ten title contention wasn’t necessarily expected from the Spartans this season, but when coach Tom Izzo’s teams are counted out? Look out. The Spartans are sound. They manage to score 81.3 points per game without a devastating 3-point attack or a dominant scorer. They’re well put together, they’re unselfish, and they play hard. That will carry you far.
• Grade: A+. Izzo defies conventional wisdom by building a team the old-fashioned way – via good high school recruiting, good retention and good player development. Unbeaten in the Big Ten gets an A+.Purdue
Rutgers Scarlet Knights guard Jordan Derkack (0) battles Purdue Boilermakers forward Trey Kaufman-Renn (4) and guard Gicarri Harris (24) for a rebound during the second half at Jersey Mike’s Arena. / Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images • Record: 16-5 overall, 8-2 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 1st.
• Current Big Ten position: 2nd.
• Overview: No one thought Purdue was going to go away in the post-Zach Edey era, and they haven’t. That Braden Smith, the preseason Big Ten Player of the Year, is playing well is no surprise. That Trey Kaufman-Renn is leading Purdue in scoring is a surprise but shouldn’t be because players get better under coach Matt Painter’s tutelage. An underrated Purdue trait is its guard depth.
• Grade: A-. Purdue trails Michigan State by 1 ½ games, the only reason for the minus in the Boilermakers’ grade. Apart from that, it’s the usual steady-as-she-goes in West Lafayette.Michigan
Michigan Wolverines center Vladislav Goldin (50) shoots the ball against UCLA Bruins guard Lazar Stefanovic (10) in the first half at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. / Kirby Lee-Imagn Images • Record: 15-5 overall, 7-2 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 9th.
• Current Big Ten position: 3rd.
• Overview: First-year coach Dusty May quickly built a fascinating team. Michigan’s 9.7 made threes per game ranks 39th nationally, but with 7-footers Vlad Goldin and Danny Wolf the paint is also a danger zone for opponents. Five players average double-digit scoring. It’s a well-balanced team.
• Grade: A. May has done an outstanding job. The last four games, two of them losses, have shown some vulnerabilities, but the Wolverines are back after two dreadful seasons.Wisconsin
Butler Bulldogs forward Jahmyl Telfort (11) defends Wisconsin Badgers guard John Blackwell (25) Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024, during the NCAA men’s basketball game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Wisconsin Badgers won 83-74. / Alex Martin/Journal and Courier / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images • Record: 16-4 overall, 6-3 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: tied for 12th.
• Current Big Ten position: 4th.
• Overview: It seems to be an annual exercise in expecting decline to begin in Madison for coach Greg Gard, but he continues to defy his skeptics. The maturation of sophomore guard John Blackwell has made him a force. Gard combined solid veterans like Steven Crowl, Max Klesmit and Nolan Winter with an inspired portal pickup in guard John Tonje. The Badgers are averaging 82.5 points per game, nearly eight better than they did in 2024 and their highest average since the early 1970s.
• Grade: A. The Badgers are dangerous. Their three Big Ten losses have been by no more than six points.Illinois
Illinois Fighting Illini guard Kylan Boswell (4) and Illinois Fighting Illini guard Kasparas Jakucionis (32) celebrate after a play during the first half against the Indiana Hoosiers at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. / Robert Goddin-Imagn Images • Record: 14-6 overall, 6-4 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 4th.
• Current Big Ten position: Three-way tie for 5th.
• Overview: Illinois coach Brad Underwood lost nearly everyone from an Elite Eight team, but did a masterful job in putting the puzzle back together. Guard Kasparas Jakucionis is dazzling at times. His flash is a counterpoint to grittier work done by Kylan Boswell and Tomislav Ivisic. On any given night, Illinois can overwhelm teams – ask both Oregon and Indiana – teams the Fighting Illini roasted on their home floors.
• Grade: B+. For as powerful as Illinois is at its best, the Illini don’t always show up. A home loss to Southern California was baffling (a subsequent home defeat against Maryland was easier explained due to team sickness) and so was a fade job at Northwestern. That dropped their grade, but on their day, Illinois is as good as any Big Ten team.Maryland
Maryland Terrapins guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie (0) drives to the basket as Illinois Fighting Illini guard Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn (2) defends during the second half at State Farm Center. / Ron Johnson-Imagn Images • Record: 16-5 overall, 6-4 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 10th.
• Current Big Ten position: Three-way tie for 5th.
• Overview: Coach Kevin Willard hit the jackpot in both high school recruiting and the portal. Freshman Derik Queen (15.2 ppg, 8.1 rpg) has been great right out of the box, and Belmont transfer point guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie (14.6 ppg, 4.7 apg) has been a good fit. The complementary pieces around that pair fit very well.
• Grade: B+. Maryland showed me something by winning a pair of road games in its last two games. That was the one knock against the Terps – that they were great at home and faded on the road. If they can continue that trend, they will continue to rise up the Big Ten charts.UCLA
UCLA Bruins guard Sebastian Mack (12) goes to the basket as Rutgers Scarlet Knights guard Jamichael Davis (1) defends during the first half at Jersey Mike’s Arena. / Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images • Record: 15-6 overall, 6-4 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 3rd.
• Current Big Ten position: Three-way tie for 5th.
• Overview: A strange Big Ten maiden voyage for the Bruins. They lost four straight at the beginning of January, prompting a rant from coach Mick Cronin on their toughness. They’ve won four in a row since, but all on the West Coast. Apart from being a solid defensive team, especially inside the arc where they limit shots, I still don’t think we know what these Bruins are about yet.
• Grade: B-. If Maryland proved something in its recent games, UCLA can’t claim to be a top Big Ten team until it wins east of the Rocky Mountains – something the Bruins have yet to achieve.Oregon
Oregon Ducks guard Jackson Shelstad (3) attempts to dribble the ball against Ohio State Buckeyes guard Evan Mahaffey (12) and guard Bruce Thornton (2) in the second half at Value City Arena on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025 in Columbus, Ohio. / Samantha Madar/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images • Record: 16-4 overall, 5-4 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 6th.
• Current Big Ten position: 8th.
• Overview: Resume-wise, Oregon looks great with wins over Texas A&M and Alabama. Within the Big Ten, however, the form has been inconsistent. The Ducks have a weird stack of scores. Wins at Ohio State and Penn State, but three home losses and a defeat at Minnesota. Befitting that trend, Oregon floats near the middle of the Big Ten in nearly every major team statistical category for offense and defense.
• Grade: B. The Ducks are basically what we thought they would be – very competitive, but not overwhelming.Indiana
Indiana Hoosiers center Oumar Ballo (11) controls the ball as Ohio State Buckeyes forward Sean Stewart (13) defends during the first half at Value City Arena. / Joseph Maiorana-Imagn Images • Record: 14-7 overall, 5-5 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 2nd.
• Current Big Ten position: 9th.
• Overview: Based on preseason expectations, the Hoosiers are under-performing under coach Mike Woodson. Inconsistency in every facet has defined these Hoosiers. A look at Indiana’s record shows decline could be in the cards. Indiana has not beaten a single team above it in the Big Ten standings. Seven of their remaining 10 games are versus teams above them.
• Grade: C-. A segment of Indiana fans will think this grade is way too kind. Another segment will think it’s harsh. The grade would have slipped into D territory, but Indiana has won five league games, so that would be unduly harsh. How much the talent was overrated entering the season, and thus how realistic the expectations were in the first place, is a fair question to ask at this point.Ohio State
Ohio State Buckeyes guard Micah Parrish (8) celebrates a three point shot during the second half against the Purdue Boilermakers at Mackey Arena. / Marc Lebryk-Imagn Images • Record: 12-8 overall, 4-5 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 8th.
• Current Big Ten position: Tied for 10th.
• Overview: Point guard Bruce Thornton has been the veteran presence everyone expected. Ohio State’s other scoring standouts – Devin Royal, Micah Parrish and freshman John Mobley – are a bit more surprising given that there were more highly touted players that were Columbus-bound in the portal.
• Grade: B-. I don’t trust the Buckeyes. Which means I don’t trust them to win or lose when they’re supposed to! There’s talent here, but they haven’t yet figured out how to harness it to attain consistency.Southern California
USC Trojans guard Desmond Claude (1) controls the ball as Illinois Fighting Illini forward Morez Johnson Jr. (21) defends during the second half at State Farm Center. / Ron Johnson-Imagn Images • Record: 12-8 overall, 4-5 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 14th.
• Current Big Ten position: Tied for 10th.
• Overview: Coach Eric Musselman has molded the Trojans into an occasionally dangerous squad – witness road wins at Illinois, Washington and Nebraska. They’re average in almost every way but hit the glass hard, leading the Big Ten in offensive rebounding in conference games.
• Grade: B. No one knew what to make of USC entering the season given that it had an almost completely new roster. What we know now is that they’re hard to play against and they share the scoring with five different players averaging double figures. A solid outfit.Iowa
Iowa Hawkeyes guard Josh Dix (4) dribbles the ball as Ohio State Buckeyes forward Devin Royal (21) defends during the first half at Value City Arena. / Joseph Maiorana-Imagn Images • Record: 13-8 overall, 4-6 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 11th.
• Current Big Ten position: 12th.
• Overview: Iowa is what it is – a good offensive team that can’t defend consistently. Lately, however, even the offense has fallen off. Iowa has scored more than 10 points below its season scoring average in three of its last four games.
• Grade: C. A threat to beat anyone when they’re on, a threat to lose to anyone when they’re not. The definition of average. Hence the grade.Northwestern
Northwestern Wildcats forward Nick Martinelli (2) reacts after the game against the Michigan Wolverines at Crisler Center. / Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images • Record: 12-8 overall, 3-6 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 16th.
• Current Big Ten position: Tied for 13th.
• Overview: Per usual, coach Chris Collins has crafted his Wildcats well. They’re not deep, but they’re tough and the 1-2-3 scoring punch of Nick Martinelli, Brooks Barnhizer and Jalen Leach can be a chore to defend when they’re on their game.
• Grade: B-. Is it ironic that the Big Ten’s most famous academic institution gets graded on a curve? The Wildcats don’t play by the same rules other Big Ten teams do by their own choice, so while they’re in the fight to avoid missing out on the Big Ten Tournament, wins over Illinois, Maryland and Indiana attest to their competitiveness.Rutgers
Rutgers Scarlet Knights guard/forward Ace Bailey (4) looks to shoot the ball as Penn State Nittany Lions guard Nick Kern Jr (3) defends during the second half at Bryce Jordan Center. Penn State defeated Rutgers 80-72. / Matthew O’Haren-Imagn Images • Record: 10-10 overall, 3-6 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 7th.
• Current Big Ten position: Tied for 13th.
• Overview: Super freshmen Ace Bailey (19.8 ppg) and Dylan Harper (18.6 ppg) have brought the goods as advertised. However, that’s about all the Scarlet Knights have. Rutgers’ defensive mentality, which has defined them under coach Steve Pikiell, has dissipated. The Scarlet Knights are giving away 75.2 points per game, seven points worse than any previous Pikiell-coached Rutgers team.
• Grade: C-. The Top 25 preseason ranking Rutgers got seems laughable now, a case study in how everyone gets too caught up in stars over how teams mesh. Seeing Rutgers conceding points in the way that it has is just jarring.Minnesota
Minnesota Golden Gophers forward Dawson Garcia (3) controls the ball as Iowa Hawkeyes forward Owen Freeman (32) defends during the first half at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. / Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images • Record: 11-10 overall, 3-7 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 18th.
• Current Big Ten position: Tied for 15th.
• Overview: It was looking hopeless in Minneapolis when the Golden Gophers were 0-6 in league play with no wins against any Power Four schools. However, there is hope at Williams Arena as Minnesota has won three of four, including wins over ranked Michigan and Oregon.
• Grade: C+. Let this be the latest article to say that Ben Johnson is a good coach without a good situation at Minnesota in terms of recruiting and NIL. He’s making the best of it, though, and if Minnesota continues to improve? He deserves a standing ovation.Penn State
Penn State Nittany Lions guard Ace Baldwin Jr. (1) dribbles against Michigan Wolverines guard Roddy Gayle Jr. (11) in the second half at Crisler Center. / Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images • Record: 13-8 overall, 3-7 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 17th.
• Current Big Ten position: Tied for 15th.
• Overview: How many fans outside of the Keystone State would know that Penn State has six players averaging double figures? Penn State’s scoring hasn’t been quite as prolific in the Big Ten, and stopping anyone is a problem – Penn State gives up 48.2% from the field and 79.4 points in conference contests.
• Grade: B-. Could have gone C+, but I err on the side of being nice. Penn State has settled into its rep as a Hard Team To Play Against in the Big Ten. A compliment, but it also means the Nittany Lions aren’t a likely threat to crack the top half of the league – and that they can be had if your team is on its game.Nebraska
Nebraska Cornhuskers guard Brice Williams (3) handles the ball during the first half against the Maryland Terrapins at Xfinity Center. / Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images • Record: 12-8 overall, 2-7 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: tied for 12th.
• Current Big Ten position: 17th.
• Overview: The Cornhuskers are in a freefall having lost six in a row. A big reason is defense. The Huskers are giving up 81.2 points per game. Scoring outside of Brice Williams and Juwan Gary has also been inconsistent.
• Grade: C-. While no one thought Nebraska would contend near the top of the league, many thought the Huskers could build on their positive 2024 season and at least maintain their spot near the middle of the Big Ten. A relatively tough remaining schedule won’t make things any easier in Lincoln.Washington
Washington Huskies forward Great Osobor (1) dribbles against the Oregon Ducks during the second half at Matthew Knight Arena. / Craig Strobeck-Imagn Images • Record: 10-10 overall, 1-8 Big Ten.
• Preseason Big Ten prediction: 15th.
• Current Big Ten position: 18th.
• Overview: Not much was expected from the Huskies, but somehow they seem even worse than anticipated. Forward Great Osobor (15.5 ppg, 8.6 rpg) has performed as expected, but no one else has really stepped up for coach Danny Sprinkle as Washington only averages 65.4 points in Big Ten games.
• Grade: D+. A hope for Washington going into the season was that it could protect its home court to tread water, but the Huskies are 1-4 in Big Ten home games, and that’s why their grade is low. Good news for Washington is that all of its remaining home games are against teams eighth or lower in the Big Ten standings.
As we reach the midway point of the Big Ten men’s basketball season, it’s time to evaluate the performance of each team so far. Here are the mid-season grades for each Big Ten team:Illinois Fighting Illini: A-
Illinois has been one of the top teams in the conference, with key wins over ranked opponents. They have shown great potential and are poised for a strong finish to the season.Indiana Hoosiers: C
Indiana has had some ups and downs this season, with inconsistent play and some tough losses. They will need to improve in the second half of the season to make a push for the NCAA Tournament.Iowa Hawkeyes: A+
Iowa has been dominant this season, led by star player Luka Garza. They are a top contender for the Big Ten title and a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.Michigan Wolverines: B+
Michigan has had a solid season so far, with key wins and a strong showing in conference play. They will need to continue their strong play in the second half of the season.Michigan State Spartans: C-
Michigan State has struggled this season, with losses to unranked opponents and inconsistent play. They will need to turn things around quickly to salvage their season.Minnesota Golden Gophers: B
Minnesota has had a solid season, with some key wins and competitive play in the Big Ten. They will need to continue to improve to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament.Ohio State Buckeyes: B-
Ohio State has had a mixed season, with some strong wins and some tough losses. They will need to improve their consistency in the second half of the season.Wisconsin Badgers: A
Wisconsin has been one of the top teams in the Big Ten, with strong play on both ends of the court. They are a serious contender for the conference title and a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.Overall, the Big Ten has been highly competitive this season, with several teams vying for the top spot. It will be exciting to see how the rest of the season unfolds and which teams will come out on top.
