Ticketmaster UK boss tells MPs prices are very fair
Getty Images
The boss of Ticketmaster UK has told MPs tickets are” very fairly priced”.
Andrew Parsons was appearing before the Business and Trade Select Committee, after fans slammed his company’s “dynamic pricing” of Oasis reunion-tour tickets last summer.
The company did not set ticket prices, which were decided ahead of sales, he said.
“Where differing price tiers [are] made available, that’s a choice of the event organiser. Selling a small amount of tickets at a higher-priced tier seems fairly reasonable.”
Many fans said they had paid significantly more than expected for tickets to see Oasis – up to £350 per ticket, about £200 more than advertised.
But Mr Parsons denied prices fluctuated during a general sale.
‘Gobbled up’
“We work closely with event organisers to be able sell tickets at the prices that they’ve determined,” he told the committee.
“There’s no technology-driven change to those prices.
“They are the prices which humans have agreed to.
“There’s not a computer or a bot behind it.”
The band themselves had also hit out at the system, saying: “It needs to be made clear that Oasis leave decisions on ticketing and pricing entirely to their promoters and management.”
But Mr Parsons told the committee: “If we’re not able to [capture] that value, which the artist is doing in those instances, then that money is just going to go, and the tickets are going to be captured and gobbled up by touts.”
The MPs did not ask about the Oasis sale specifically, as the Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) is looking into whether Ticketmaster breached consumer-protection law.
Clamp down
Ticketmaster’s parent company, Live Nation, is the world’s biggest live events promoter.
And Charlie Maynard MP urged the CMA, also represented at the hearing, to launch a separate investigation into Live Nation’s “dominant market share”.
But Mr Parsons told the committee Ticketmaster and Live Nation “have clear divides between how we operate on a daily basis” and the UK ticketing market was “as competitive as any market in the world”.
Ticketmaster UK also commented on the government’s public consultation which has proposed a range of actions including a cap of up to 30% on the resale of tickets.
Mr Parsons said the company was in favour of a cap but that “30% still gives the opportunity for touts to be able to be running a business in that manner”.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy announced plans last month to clamp down on touts who bulk-buy tickets and then resell them for huge profits.
Ticketmaster UK boss defends ticket prices, says they are “very fair”During a recent hearing with MPs, the boss of Ticketmaster UK defended the ticket prices for events, stating that they are “very fair” and reflect the value of the experience being offered to customers.
In response to concerns raised about the high cost of tickets for popular events, the Ticketmaster UK boss explained that pricing is based on a variety of factors, including demand, production costs, and the artist’s fees. He emphasized that Ticketmaster works to ensure that tickets are priced appropriately to ensure the sustainability of the live events industry.
The boss also highlighted that Ticketmaster offers a range of ticket options, including early bird discounts, group rates, and package deals, to make events more accessible to a wider audience.
Overall, the Ticketmaster UK boss maintained that the company is committed to providing a fair and transparent ticketing system that benefits both customers and event organizers.

Aston Villa: Ollie Watkins tells Unai Emery he will reject Arsenal to stay
Fellow striker Jhon Duran is expected to complete a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in a deal worth up to 85m euros (£71.1m). The Saudi transfer window closes on Friday.
Monchi, Villa’s president of football operations, admits the club will need to keep some of the money brought in to help comply with profit and sustainability rules.
He said: “It is an important operation for a player with tremendous potential.
“But these types of offers, for the club and the player, are difficult to reject. Between fixed and variable amounts, it will be close to 85m euros.
“There are a few small details left and for the player it is an incredible economic leap.
“The first thing we are going to do with the money we receive from the sale of Duran is to keep a portion of it because of the fair play rules, which are very demanding.
“A significant part of the income will go towards that.”
Chelsea striker Joao Felix and Paris St-Germain forward Marco Asensio are both on Villa’s wishlist before Monday’s 23:00 GMT deadline as they look for reinforcements.
Felix has seven goals in 20 games for Chelsea having moved to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid for £45m in the summer but has made just three Premier League starts.
Spain international Asensio, 29, has made 16 appearances for PSG, scoring twice, but just eight of them have come in Ligue 1 for the leaders.
Monchi told Spanish radio station El Larguero: “Then there are names, one of them being Joao. Emery likes him, because in the three transfer markets I have been in, the fourth with this one, he has always been mentioned and has been a small object of desire for Emery.
“But it is complicated, and I don’t know if we will be able to be there.
“The first time, Aston Villa were in the Conference [League] and he wanted the Champions League – that’s why he went to Barcelona. Then, in the operation with [Conor] Gallagher and Atletico he had to enter into negotiations with Chelsea and we couldn’t get in.
“It’s a similar case to Asensio there is also an important love affair. Shortly before my arrival, Aston Villa tried to sign him and came close, but he went to PSG.
“He is a player that Emery has always had in mind because he believes in his quality.”
Aston Villa’s star striker Ollie Watkins has delivered a blow to Arsenal by revealing his intentions to stay at the club and reject any potential move to the Gunners.Reports had emerged linking Watkins with a potential move to Arsenal, with former Arsenal manager Unai Emery reportedly keen on bringing the 25-year-old to the Emirates.
However, Watkins has made it clear that he is committed to Aston Villa and has no plans to leave the club anytime soon.
In an interview, Watkins said, “I am happy at Aston Villa and I want to continue to help the team achieve our goals. I have no interest in leaving the club at this moment.”
This news will come as a relief to Aston Villa fans who have been impressed by Watkins’ performances since joining the club from Brentford last summer.
With Watkins leading the line, Aston Villa have enjoyed a strong start to the season and will be hoping to secure European qualification by the end of the campaign.
It seems that Arsenal will have to look elsewhere for attacking reinforcements, as Watkins looks set to stay put at Villa Park for the foreseeable future.

Under Trump, Schools Tells to Change Sexual Misconduct, Title IX Guidance
The Education Department sent notice to K-12 schools and colleges on Friday that it would revert to policies put out during President Trump’s first term that limited schools’ liability in sexual misconduct cases and afforded stronger rights to students accused of sexual harassment and assault.
The letter also instructed schools not to expect the department to enforce a revised interpretation of Title IX, the 1972 law prohibiting sex discrimination in educational programs that receive federal funding. That change, announced during the Biden administration, broadened the law’s scope to recognize harassment or exclusion based on sexual orientation and gender identity to be a form of discrimination.
The revised guidance issued Friday instructed educators to once again adopt new standards for enforcing codes against sexual violence and harassment on campus, a process they have had to undertake every four years as rules have whipsawed back and forth under the last four administrations.
The old rules, set in 2018, eased the standards by which the department assessed schools’ liability in sexual misconduct cases, giving schools room to follow different evidentiary standards and appeals processes in investigations. They also required schools to hold live hearings in which accusers and students accused of sexual assault could cross-examine one another, including through a lawyer.
In a break from recent changes surrounding the law, formally known as Title IX of the Education Amendments Act, the letter sent Friday stated that the changes in its implementations could begin immediately, after a federal judge in Kentucky blocked the Biden administration’s revisions from taking effect. That ruling was largely based on the Biden-era rules’ increased protections for transgender students, which the judge found to be unconstitutional.
The letter also leaned on Mr. Trump’s executive authority to justify the immediate return to the old standards, circumventing the more standard practice of proposing new regulations through a lengthy federal rule-making process. It stated that the employees in the Education Department’s Office of Civil Rights, which enforces federal law across schools receiving federal funding, essentially answer to the president.
“As a constitutional matter, the president’s interpretation of the law governs because he alone controls and supervises subordinate officers who exercise discretionary executive power on his behalf,” it said. “That unified control extends to Ed and OCR; therefore, Title IX must be enforced consistent with President Trump’s order.”
Similar changes put forward under former President Barack Obama were also made informally through “dear colleague” letters like the one released on Friday, but informal guidance does not traditionally carry the force of law and can be easily overturned.
Students’ rights groups focused on due process celebrated the development as a restoration of fair standards for those accused of serious offenses.
“The return to the 2020 rules ensures that all students — whether they are the accused or the accuser — will receive fair treatment and important procedural safeguards,” Tyler Coward, a lead counsel at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, said in a statement. “That includes the right of both parties to have lawyers present during hearings, the right for both attorneys to cross-examine the other party and witnesses, and the right to receive all of the evidence in the institution’s possession.”
Critics of the rules, dating to Mr. Trump’s first term, have said the requirements for live hearings force victims to relive the trauma of sexual violence and give the schools they attend more room to ignore or informally resolve many serious infractions.
“This is an incredibly disappointing decision that will leave many survivors of sexual violence, LGBTQ+ students, and pregnant and parenting students without the accommodations critical to their ability to learn and attend class safely,” Emma Grasso Levine, a senior manager at Know Your IX, said in a statement. “Schools must step up to protect students in the absence of adequate federal guidance.”
Under Trump, Schools Told to Change Sexual Misconduct, Title IX GuidanceIn a controversial move, the Trump administration has issued new guidelines for how schools should handle cases of sexual misconduct under Title IX, the federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities.
These new guidelines, which were released by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, are seen as a major shift from the Obama-era policies that placed a stronger emphasis on protecting survivors of sexual assault. Under the Trump administration’s guidance, schools are now encouraged to give more rights to the accused and to use a higher standard of evidence when determining guilt.
Critics of the new guidelines argue that they will make it harder for survivors of sexual assault to come forward and seek justice, as schools may be less inclined to take their complaints seriously. They also worry that the changes will discourage victims from reporting incidents of sexual misconduct, leading to a culture of silence and impunity on campuses.
Supporters of the new guidelines, however, argue that they provide a fairer and more balanced approach to handling cases of sexual misconduct, ensuring that both the accuser and the accused are given due process rights. They believe that the changes will help prevent false accusations and protect the rights of those who have been wrongly accused.
Overall, the Trump administration’s new guidelines on sexual misconduct and Title IX have sparked a heated debate about how best to address and prevent sexual violence on college campuses. It remains to be seen how schools will implement these changes and what impact they will have on survivors of sexual assault.

Chuck Todd tells colleagues he’s leaving NBC News
Chuck Todd is taking his podcast and going home.
The former “Meet the Press” moderator circulated a memo to colleagues at NBC News informing them that he would be departing 30 Rock, according to several reports. Todd confirmed his departure.
His last day at NBC News was Friday.
“There’s never a perfect time to leave a place that’s been a professional home for so long, but I’m pretty excited about a few new projects that are on the cusp of going from ‘pie in the sky’ to ‘near reality,’ Todd told NBC News staffers in a memo Friday.

Todd confirmed his departure on Friday. When The Post sought comment from Todd via his NBC work email, the automatic message read: “Friday, January 31st was my final day at NBC.”
According to the memo, Todd told colleagues that he intends to take his podcast with him.
The “Chuck Toddcast” is “coming with me,” according to Todd, who urged colleagues to “stay tuned for an announcement about its new home soon.”
Earlier this month, Semafor reported that Todd was plotting his exit from the Peacock Network as his contract was due to expire later this year.
Todd, who was once a key cog in NBC’s political coverage, has reportedly been busy lately taking up meetings with several media organizations to plan his next steps, according to Semafor.
The Post has sought comment from NBC News.
The 52-year-old Florida native joined NBC in 2007 and quickly became a fixture in the network’s national political coverage.
In 2014, he was named moderator of “Meet the Press,” the long-running Sunday morning political talk show, replacing David Gregory.
Gregory, who hosted Meet the Press from 2008 to 2014, struggled to maintain the show’s dominance after Tim Russert’s passing, as declining ratings and criticism of his interview style led to his eventual replacement by Todd.
In addition to his “Meet the Press” gig, Todd hosted a weekday political program “MTP Daily” on sister cable network MSNBC and contributed to NBC’s political website.
In 2023, Todd announced he would step down as host of “Meet the Press” to focus on long-form projects. He was replaced by the current moderator, Kristen Welker.
Speculation about Todd’s future at the network ramped up last year when he was among the voices who criticized NBC News management for its decision to bring Ronna McDaniel, the former Republican National Committee chair, on board as a paid commentator.
In March 2024, NBC News hired McDaniel as a political contributor.
The move sparked significant internal backlash, with big-name NBC and MSNBC hosts such as “Morning Joe” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, Rachel Maddow and Niccole Wallace expressing strong objections due to McDaniel’s past support of Donald Trump’s claims regarding the 2020 election.
Facing mounting pressure, NBC reversed its decision and parted ways with McDaniel just days after her hiring.
Todd’s departure comes during a period of flux at parent company Comcast, which like other media giants is grappling with a rapidly changing landscape that has seen a mass migration of viewers away from linear television and toward digital and streaming.
Comcast, the $129 billion Philadelphia-based telecoms giant, is making major changes by spinning off several of its cable networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, E!, Syfy, Oxygen and Golf Channel into a separate company to give them more financial independence and flexibility.
The company is also raising prices on Xfinity services, with most customers seeing increases on their bills starting in January, as part of its strategy to adapt to shifting consumer habits and industry competition.
Shares of Comcast were up by 1.25% as of 11 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday. The company’s stock was selling on Nasdaq at $33.66 a share.
In a shocking announcement, Chuck Todd, the longtime host of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” has reportedly told his colleagues that he is leaving NBC News. Todd, who has been with the network for over 12 years, is said to be pursuing new opportunities in the media industry.During his tenure at NBC, Todd has become one of the most recognizable faces in political journalism, known for his insightful analysis and tough questioning of politicians. His departure will undoubtedly leave a void in the network’s political coverage.
While Todd has not yet made a formal announcement about his departure, many of his colleagues have expressed their sadness at the news. NBC News has not yet commented on the situation, but sources say that Todd’s last day at the network will be in the coming weeks.
We wish Chuck Todd all the best in his future endeavors and thank him for his years of dedicated service to NBC News.

WATCH: Sen. Warner tells federal employees to ‘think twice’ about offer of deferred resignation
Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., questioned Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Wednesday in his confirmation hearing for health and human services secretary.
Watch the video in our player above.
Warner touched on President Donald Trump’s recent offer to millions of federal employees that would let them resign and work from home through September.
READ MORE: Trump offers all federal workers a buyout with nearly 8 months’ pay
The senator said workers should ask themselves: “Has this individual in his business world ever fulfilled his contracts or obligations to any workers in the past?”
Warner asked Kennedy if he’d commit to not firing any federal worker who is focused on food safety. Kennedy did not directly answer. In a later exchange, he said that “I will commit to not firing anybody who’s doing their jobs.” Warner asked if that assessment would come from Kennedy’s opinion or Trump’s agenda. Kennedy replied: “My opinion.”
For years, Kennedy, an environmental lawyer, has spread misinformation and falsehoods about vaccines and their safety, including the heavily debunked claim that they cause autism. Kennedy has also promoted drinking raw milk, which the Food and Drug Administration says can pose a “serious health risk.” His views on these issues and others have prompted concern among health experts about his nomination.
Kennedy, the son of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, ran for president as an independent in 2024 before dropping out of the race and endorsing Trump.
In a recent interview, Senator Warner issued a warning to federal employees considering the offer of deferred resignation. He urged them to “think twice” before making a decision that could potentially impact their careers and livelihoods. Watch the full video to hear his perspective on this important issue.

Johnson tells ‘UpFront’ he’s pushing for recess appointments of Trump cabinet picks
U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson says he’s pushing his GOP colleagues to pursue recess appointments to quickly confirm President Trump’s cabinet nominees.
“Democrats are going to keep running out the clock here and denying President Trump the confirmed secretaries for his departments. I mean, it’s pretty grotesque from my standpoint,” Johnson said on WISN’s “UpFront,” which is produced in partnership with WisPolitics. “If Democrats won’t cooperate, allow these individuals who are going to be confirmed in a timely fashion, President Trump needs to get his team in place, and if that means recess appointments, that’s the route we should take.”
Entering the second week of the Trump administration, Johnson, a member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said he was unaware of any increased immigration enforcement currently underway in Wisconsin.
“The Trump administration is going after people that are a real danger to society, the real criminals,” Johnson said. “In those law enforcement actions, if they find people in this country illegally, they’ll also be caught up in the law enforcement actions.
“Local law enforcement ought to cooperate with federal law enforcement,” Johnson added when asked if state and local officials should be prosecuted if they obstruct deportation efforts.
Last week, a federal judge halted Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship, a move Johnson said he backed.
“I understand his opinion,” Johnson said, referring to the judge. “It’s what conservative judges do, they apply the law as they interpret it. From a standpoint of just international law, we’re only one of the very few nations that allow birthright citizenship. I know why we passed the 14th Amendment. I think it definitely applied in that circumstance. Supporters then, I’m not sure the people passing the 14th Amendment, would anticipate wide open borders and this flood of illegal immigrants coming uncontrolled into this country, somewhat incentivized by birthright citizenship. So, times have changed. We’ll see how this is adjudicated in the courts.”
On Trump’s sweeping Jan. 6 pardons, Johnson said he would have been more cautious.
“There was a grotesque miscarriage of justice throughout the Biden administration,” Johnson said. “Certainly as it relates to people that participated in Jan. 6, a lot of that misjustice had to be rectified. I would have probably gone at it a little more cautiously. But in the end I think President Trump said let’s just pardon them all. I don’t have a real problem. I think the people who did commit violent acts, I’m not sure I would have pardoned them, but I think they served jail time, and you have to really take a look at what jail time they served versus, for example, violent criminals in New York and California that are just being let on the streets.”
Attorney General Josh Kaul says he is “not intimidated” by the new Trump administration and Justice Department memo calling for local officials to be prosecuted if they obstruct deportation efforts, calling it a “disastrous first week in office.”
“These are intimidation tactics,” Kaul told “UpFront.” “I’m not intimidated. I know that my colleagues in other states are not intimidated because we uphold the law, and we’re going to do what’s in the best interest of the people of our state.”
The Dem AG said he has not been in touch with any ICE or federal officials but explained what he sees as the state’s role in federal immigration enforcement.
“The issue that’s going to come up is when we have discretionary decisions to make, how are we going to allocate law enforcement resources?” Kaul said. “So at the Department of Justice, our focus is on investigating and prosecuting the most significant cases or cases where there’s nobody else who can step up and bring an investigation or prosecution, and I don’t want to see resources to be diverted away from homicide investigations or the investigations of other serious crimes to make state law enforcement agencies sort of deputies for a federal agency.
“Certainly, if there’s somebody who has committed some horrific, violent crime and there’s an effort to deport them, nobody wants to see those folks remain in the country,” Kaul added. “But at the same time, I don’t want to see some of the extreme stuff we’ve seen from the Trump administration, like potentially having immigration raids at churches or schools, against people who themselves have committed no crime other than being here undocumented.”
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said Republicans will introduce legislation that would “require that everyone has to follow the law and cooperate with ICE.”
“I’ve seen the speaker’s comments in the press, but we haven’t seen any potential bill drafts,” Kaul said. “And that’s unfortunate because if you want to have effective law enforcement efforts, having collaboration, and having an opportunity to think through bills and make sure they’re effective is a good thing. What I think we’re seeing instead is an effort to play politics with this issue, and that’s concerning, particularly when we have police chiefs and sheriffs around the state of Wisconsin who make judgments every day about how to use their resources most effectively. That’s who I want to see making decisions about law enforcement resources, not Robin Vos and not the Legislature.”
Madison-based attorney Peter Moyers, who represented several Jan. 6 defendants in Minnesota and Wisconsin, said Wisconsin client Charles Walters was surprised by Trump’s pardon.
“He had always said, look, ‘I know I was wrong,’” Moyers told “UpFront.” “‘I shouldn’t have been in there. I just don’t think I did that much damage,’ and he was certainly prepared to take his lumps and take his punishment, which he saw something he had coming.”
Walters was still awaiting sentencing. Prosecutors say he kicked through fencing and confronted police.
“We now live in the digital age, and a lot of this is stuff that no pardon or commutation or anything like that can erase,” Moyers said. “You can still find out all about it. Unfortunately, this is going to be all my client’s top Google hits for their name, maybe for the rest of their lives.”
Moyers says he’s politically “on the left” and learned himself from his clients.
“On Jan. 6, 2021, I was really upset, I was horrified, and even though I’m a criminal defense lawyer I said in my heart I don’t care what happens,” Moyers said. “I think all these people need to be put in prison. And then, as always happens in my work, you meet people and you see that it’s a little more complex than that. And it put me in contact with a lot of people that I otherwise might not even spend time with because they think so differently than I do. And so, you know, it was kind of an odd way for me to meet people who think very differently than I do. It gave me some insight into as divided in this country as people are, people sometimes screw up.”
See more from the show.
In a recent interview on ‘UpFront’, Senator Johnson revealed his plans to push for recess appointments of several of President Trump’s cabinet picks. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story. #Johnson #Trump #CabinetPicks #UpFront

Taliban deputy tells leader there is no excuse for education bans on Afghan women and girls
A senior Taliban figure has urged the group’s leader to scrap education bans on Afghan women and girls, saying there is no excuse for them, in a rare public rebuke of government policy.
Sher Abbas Stanikzai, political deputy at the Foreign Ministry, made the remarks in a speech on Saturday in southeastern Khost province.
He told an audience at a religious school ceremony there was no reason to deny education to women and girls, “just as there was no justification for it in the past and there shouldn’t be one at all.”
The government has barred females from education after sixth grade. Last September, there were reports authorities had also stopped medical training and courses for women.
In Afghanistan, women and girls can only be treated by female doctors and health professionals. Authorities have yet to confirm the medical training ban.
“We call on the leadership again to open the doors of education,” said Stanikzai in a video shared by his official account on the social platform X. “We are committing an injustice against 20 million people out of a population of 40 million, depriving them of all their rights. This is not in Islamic law, but our personal choice or nature.”
Stanikzai was once the head of the Taliban team in talks that led to the complete withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan.
It is not the first time he has said that women and girls deserve to have an education. He made similar remarks in September 2022, a year after schools closed for girls and months and before the introduction of a university ban.
But the latest comments marked his first call for a change in policy and a direct appeal to Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada.
Ibraheem Bahiss, an analyst with Crisis Group’s South Asia program, said Stanikzai had periodically made statements calling girls’ education a right of all Afghan women.
“However, this latest statement seems to go further in the sense that he is publicly calling for a change in policy and questioned the legitimacy of the current approach,” Bahiss said.
In the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, earlier this month, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai urged Muslim leaders to challenge the Taliban on women and girls’ education.
She was speaking at a conference hosted by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Muslim World League.
The U.N. has said that recognition is almost impossible while bans on female education and employment remain in place and women can’t go out in public without a male guardian.
No country recognizes the Taliban as the legitimate rulers of Afghanistan, but countries like Russia have been building ties with them.
India has also been developing relations with Afghan authorities.
In Dubai earlier this month, a meeting between India’s top diplomat, Vikram Mistri, and Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi showed their deepening cooperation.
In a recent development, a Taliban deputy has reportedly told the leader of the group that there is no excuse for banning education for Afghan women and girls. This statement comes amidst growing concern and backlash from the international community over the Taliban’s oppressive policies towards women’s rights. The deputy, whose identity has not been disclosed, is said to have emphasized the importance of education for all Afghan citizens, regardless of gender. The deputy reportedly argued that denying education to women and girls not only goes against basic human rights principles but also undermines the country’s long-term development and stability.
This bold stance from within the Taliban leadership is a rare and hopeful sign that there may be internal dissent and pushback against the group’s extremist policies. It also underscores the growing pressure on the Taliban to reform and respect the rights of all Afghan citizens, especially women and girls.
It remains to be seen how the Taliban leader will respond to this dissenting voice from within his ranks. However, this development serves as a reminder that the fight for women’s rights in Afghanistan is far from over, and that there are individuals within the Taliban who recognize the importance of education for all. Let us hope that this message will lead to positive change for Afghan women and girls.
