  • Tens of Thousands Told to Evacuate as New Fire Rages North of L.A.

As the Hughes fire exploded in size on Wednesday, people living around Castaic Lake in northern Los Angeles County weighed the question of whether to stay or go.

The danger felt all the more real because of the deadly Eaton and Palisades fires that have been ravaging other parts of the county.

Greg Wolf, 64, was hunkered down with his family inside his house in Castaic despite a mandatory evacuation order. Ash was raining down and there were plumes of smoke in the sky, but he said they were staying put because the winds had appeared to die down and the fire appeared to be south of them.

Mr. Wolf said he is normally unbothered by warnings about fires. But this time, he was nervous.

“What happened in Altadena and the power of the wind in the Palisades — I’ve never seen anything like that in California,” he said.

Fueled by fierce winds, the Eaton and Palisades fires grew rapidly and caused widespread devastation in Altadena and Pasadena to the northeast of Los Angeles, and in Pacific Palisades and Malibu to the west. The two rank among the most destructive blazes in California’s history.

The Hughes fire seemed to be growing at a similarly shocking rate, burning more than 8,000 acres by 4 p.m., barely four hours after it started.

It had burned mostly brush in and around the Castaic Lake State Recreation Area, but evacuation orders were issued for wider swaths of the area. The evacuation zones include Northlake Hills Elementary School, Castaic Elementary School and Castaic Middle School. Other schools closed out of caution, though they were not under evacuation orders.

Manny Trujillo watched the fire spread into a dry riverbed across the street from his home in Castaic. There have been fires nearby before, he said, but nothing like this. As the flames crept closer, he couldn’t decide whether or not to leave.

“I don’t want to panic,” he said. “But what do you take?”

The fire at first threatened the Lake Hills Community Church, which overlooks Castaic Lake, but David Cummings, the lead pastor, said the building appeared to be untouched. He had watched from the church’s remote security cameras and spotted firefighters in the area before the power went out.

About half of the church’s 140 parishioners live in Castaic.

“We’ve been able to evacuate them down to homes in Santa Clarita, but now some of those homes are under evacuation so we’re re-evacuating,” Mr. Cummings said.

The fire had reached the northern part of Santa Clarita, said Mayor Bill Miranda. He said he was not aware of any homes that were damaged in the city, which is south of the lake and is home to about 225,000 people.

Some of its residents were taking no chances.

People who live on the Camino Azar cul-de-sac in Santa Clarita’s new Tesoro Highlands community were evacuating midafternoon Wednesday, after watching wearily as the fire grew for several hours and checking in with one another.

“It moves very fast,” Immanuel Chiang, 57, said as thick clouds of smoke billowed just northwest of his hillside community. “I just came and started packing.”

Like his neighbors, Mr. Chiang moved to the new development just three months ago.

Mr. Miranda said he felt confident about Santa Clarita’s preparations, with evacuation centers set up, including for animals, and a command center established near Castaic Lake. The area has been through fires before: In 2019, the Tick fire burned nearly 5,000 acres.

“We’re experienced with fires, that’s a good thing,” he said. “But the fact that we have so many fires, that’s not a good thing.”

Mr. Miranda urged people to be prepared, noting that winds were forecast to pick up tonight and could shift quickly.

By Wednesday evening, some Castaic evacuees were gathered at the Ralph’s shopping center. Among them were Ted and Jennie Hartman, who were preparing to head to neighboring Valencia to get dinner with their 7-year-old son.

Around midday, their son’s elementary school notified them that all children needed to be picked up. At 4 p.m., the family heard officials on bullhorns saying they needed to evacuate.

“I think they were worried about embers,” said Mr. Hartman, 57, a state worker, who has lived in Castaic since 1986 in a neighborhood of mostly two-story homes.

As they left for dinner, the Hartmans said they did not know where they would be sleeping tonight.

In the latest wildfire news, tens of thousands of residents have been ordered to evacuate as a new fire rages north of Los Angeles. The fire, dubbed the “Canyon Fire,” has already scorched thousands of acres and is rapidly spreading due to high winds and dry conditions.

Authorities are urging residents in the affected areas to evacuate immediately to ensure their safety. The fire is posing a threat to homes, businesses, and wildlife in the surrounding areas, and firefighters are working tirelessly to contain the blaze.

Our thoughts are with those impacted by this devastating fire, and we urge everyone in the area to stay vigilant and follow evacuation orders to protect themselves and their loved ones. Stay tuned for updates on this rapidly developing situation.

  • Here’s Why Trump Did Not Get Tens Of Billions From $TRUMP Coin

    Topline

President Donald Trump did not get tens of billions of dollars richer amid his inauguration thanks to the cryptocurrency token named in his honor, despite the suggestion from some headlines and the on-paper calculation of how much he stands to gain from the meme coin worth billions.

    Key Facts

Trump announced late Friday the launch of the “Official Trump” token, or $TRUMP, on the Solana blockchain network, and $TRUMP quickly went viral and soared in value, rising more than 1,100% from $6 to $75 in 36 hours before tumbling back to below $40 by Tuesday morning, according to CoinMarketCap.

The “Official Trump” website lists two entities as owners of a collective 80% of $TRUMP’s supply: CIC Digital LLC, an affiliate of the billionaire’s Trump Organization, and Fight Fight Fight LLC, a recently incorporated business whose ownership is unclear – without naming the split between CIC Digital and Fight Fight Fight.

Even if Trump did control that full stake, reports attributing as much as a $58 billion windfall for Trump at the coin’s weekend peak were misguided, as they were based on the skewed metric of the coin’s fully diluted valuation, which multiplies $TRUMP’s price by the number of all coins which may eventually become available–but are not currently circulating.

Essentially, that banks on the 200 million existing $TRUMP tokens retaining its same value as CIC Digital and Fight Fight Fight unlock its 800 million $TRUMP coins over the next three years—no sure bet given how financial assets typically lose value as their supply increases (like stocks of public companies going down when a company issues more shares).

The value of the 800 million locked tokens is theoretical considering they are not on the market, and it’s unclear how much Trump owns of that amount jointly controlled by CIC Digital and Fight Fight Fight.

Based on market capitalization, a slightly more sensible metric that multiplies the price of $TRUMP by the number of coins now available, an 80% stake would be worth $6.2 billion—still a dubious estimate given it’s based on supply not yet on the market.

So How Much Is Trump Worth?

Not counting the meme coin holdings, Trump was worth $6.2 billion Tuesday, according to Forbes calculations. The core of his fortune comes from his social media business and real estate.

What Will $trump And $melania Be Worth?

Meme tokens often endure highly volatile trading, evidenced by $TRUMP’s near 50% drop from its Saturday peak. Traders have already signaled hesitation at the potential for dilution. The subsequent launch of First Lady Melania Trump’s $MELANIA meme coin was viewed “negatively” by the market due to the “further dilution” of the Trump crypto brand, noted Bernstein analysts led by Gautam Chhugani in a Monday note to clients, And “given how fast [$TRUMP]

reached a stratospheric market value, the 80% supply held by insiders does create some pressure on its market value,” Chhugani added. Meme coins do not hold underlying value like stocks which grant investors a piece of a company or bonds which offer interest payments. The Official Trump coin website has the following disclaimer: “Trump Memes are intended to function as an expression of support for, and engagement with, the ideals and beliefs embodied by the symbol ’$TRUMP’ and the associated artwork, and are not intended to be, or to be the subject of, an investment opportunity, investment contract, or security of any type.”

    Truth Social Stock Drops

Shares of Trump’s publicly traded social media company Trump Media & Technology Group sank Tuesday, falling about 11% by midday, pacing toward its worst daily percentage loss since early November. The value of Trump’s more than 50% equity stake in the company, best known for its Truth Social platform, fell by about $500 million Tuesday. Trump Media, which trades under the ticker $DJT as a nod to the president’s initials, is considered a meme stock by some experts as its multibillion-dollar valuation is a far cry from its light financial performance.

    Crucial Quote

“Whichever way you see it, we think a new chaotic crypto era is here,” wrote Chhugani.

There has been much speculation surrounding the $TRUMP Coin and its potential to generate massive profits for former President Donald Trump. However, despite the hype and excitement surrounding the digital currency, Trump did not end up receiving tens of billions from the coin.

One of the main reasons for this is that the $TRUMP Coin did not gain the widespread adoption and popularity that many had hoped for. While there was initial interest in the coin, it failed to gain traction among investors and did not see the exponential growth that was expected.

Additionally, the cryptocurrency market is highly volatile and unpredictable, making it difficult to accurately predict the success of any particular coin. Trump’s $TRUMP Coin faced stiff competition from other cryptocurrencies and failed to stand out in a crowded market.

Furthermore, Trump’s controversial reputation may have also played a role in the coin’s lackluster performance. Many investors may have been hesitant to support a cryptocurrency associated with a polarizing figure like Trump, leading to limited interest and adoption.

In conclusion, while the $TRUMP Coin generated significant buzz and excitement, it ultimately fell short of expectations and did not deliver the massive profits that many had hoped for. Trump’s failure to secure tens of billions from the coin serves as a cautionary tale about the unpredictable nature of the cryptocurrency market.

  • The Big Ten’s decision on Oumar Ballo’s availability tonight will make Indiana fans smile

Indiana head coach Mike Woodson said after the Indiana-Illinois game that he would have to wait and see if the Big Ten would take some action against sixth-year center Oumar Ballo after his part in the scuffle between the Hoosiers and Fighting Illini.

Well, the Hoosiers had a short rest period between games this week as they took on Illinois on Tuesday and turned around to take on Ohio State on Friday. That is a short amount of time for the Big Ten to make a decision on what they would do when it comes to Ballo, who was the only player ejected after the fight.

It seems the conference made their decision, and it should make Indiana fans very happy.

The conference is letting Ballo play tonight against Ohio State and will not take any further action against the sixth-year senior out of Mali.

In the final minutes of Indiana’s embarrassing outing against Illinois, tensions rose when Luke Goode was called for a common foul on a box out of Tomislav Ivisic. Ivisic clearly did not like how Goode chose to box him out and got in the face of Goode. At that time, Goode’s teammate Myles Rice chose to get involved and push Ivisic out of Goode’s ear.

At this point, both teams came over to get involved and stand up for their respective teammate. Then, out of nowhere, Ballo came in, jumped, and shoved Ivisic to the ground. By the time Ivisic got up to relate, both coaches and all the refs had gotten involved and had pulled the teams apart.

At that point, the refs went over to the monitor to sort out the situation. Ballo ended up being asses a Flagrant 2 foul and was ejected from the game, while Rice, Ivisic, and Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn were all given technical fouls.

Luckily, Ballo did not have any more repercussions from his actions, and Woodson said after the game he would talk with Ballo about handling that situation in a different way.

The Big Ten’s decision on Oumar Ballo’s availability tonight will make Indiana fans smile

Indiana basketball fans have been eagerly awaiting news on whether star center Oumar Ballo will be available to play in tonight’s game against Ohio State. The Big Ten’s decision to clear Ballo for competition is sure to bring a smile to the faces of Hoosier faithful.

Ballo, who has been a dominant force in the paint for Indiana this season, has been dealing with a minor injury that has kept him out of the lineup for the past few games. His presence on the court is crucial for the Hoosiers, who are looking to make a run in the Big Ten tournament and secure a spot in the NCAA tournament.

With Ballo back in the lineup, Indiana’s chances of success tonight against Ohio State are significantly higher. His size, strength, and scoring ability make him a matchup nightmare for opposing teams, and his return will surely bolster the Hoosiers’ chances of coming out on top.

So, Indiana fans, get ready to cheer on your team tonight with Oumar Ballo back in action. The Big Ten’s decision is sure to bring a smile to your face as you watch your Hoosiers battle it out on the court. Let’s go, Indiana! #HoosierNation #OumarBallo #BigTenDecision #IndianaBasketball

  • Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith breaks Big Ten’s freshman TD receiving record

Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith breaks Big Ten’s freshman TD receiving record

Jeremiah Smith was already in the Ohio State record books. Now he’s in the Big Ten record books too.

The Buckeyes‘ sensational receiver set the single-season conference record for most touchdown receptions by a freshman, hauling in a catch from Will Howard and taking it 45 yards to the house on Ohio State’s first possession against Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

The previous record belonged to Purdue’s Rondale Moore, who totaled 12 touchdown catches in 2018.

Smith tied the record in Ohio State’s first-round College Football Playoff game against Tennessee, then broke it in the quarterfinal matchup against the Ducks. The 19-year-old tallied a game-high six catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns against the Volunteers.

He entered the Rose Bowl with 63 receptions for 1,037 yards and 12 touchdown receptions, all of which are freshman records at Ohio State, surpassing the numbers Cris Carter had in 1984. Smith also had four carries for 47 yards and another touchdown during the regular season.

After coming to Ohio State with much fanfare, the nation’s No. 1 recruit has lived up to the hype.

“He’ll probably be the best receiver to come through here,” Buckeyes cornerback Denzel Burke said in the week leading up to the Rose Bowl. “He’s already on that verge, so really happy for him.”

Burke is qualified to offer his opinion, having played with and practiced against the Buckeyes’ recent crop of NFL first-round receivers. Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Marvin Harrison Jr. were all selected in the top 20 over the past three drafts, and senior Emeka Egbuka could join them this spring.

“I’ve seen a lot of great receivers,” Burke said. “I’ve seen Garrett. I’ve seen Jaxon, seen Chris. I’ve seen Marvin Harrison — he was my class, too. So just being able to see that and being able to see those qualities in him. But he’s Jeremiah Smith. He’s a whole different person, so that’s awesome.”

Now, Smith stands on his own in Big Ten history.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith has made a big impact in his first season with the Buckeyes, breaking the Big Ten’s freshman touchdown receiving record. Smith, a highly touted recruit out of high school, has lived up to the hype and then some with his performance on the field.

In a game against Michigan State, Smith hauled in his 10th touchdown reception of the season, breaking the previous record set by former Penn State standout Chris Godwin in 2014. Smith’s combination of speed, route-running ability, and hands have made him a nightmare for opposing defenses to cover.

The future looks bright for Jeremiah Smith and Ohio State as they continue their quest for a Big Ten championship and potentially a spot in the College Football Playoff. With Smith’s record-breaking season, he has cemented himself as one of the top young talents in the conference and a player to watch for years to come.
