LALO High Proof Tequila
LALO released their first tequila in 2017, but for the upstart brand, 2023 was truly a banner year. The brand expanded distribution to major markets including New York, focusing on a single SKU: 80 proof blanco tequila with no additives. Since then, a big piece of LALO’s national marketing leaned into their product’s three ingredients: water, champagne yeast, and Highland agave.
Of course, LALO had another marketing card in reserve, which they didn’t hesitate to play. One of the brand’s founders is Eduardo “Lalo” González, the grandson of Mexican spirits legend Don Julio González. (It’s a name almost anyone who’s walked past a tequila shelf will recognize.)
Press was one thing, but the brand’s real stickiness seemed to grow from positive word of mouth and a consistent, delicious blanco that stood out from the crowd. Indeed, LALO still bills itself as “one of the few brands exclusively dedicated to blanco tequila.” That focus attracted fans in a landscape of increasingly novel cask aging and celebrity brands. But it also created a question for market observers: with its sights set on blanco, where could LALO possibly expand from there?
LALO Tequila Founders
It turns out there was nowhere to go but up—in proof, at least. In late 2024, LALO released its first “high proof” expression, a 108 proof version of its trademark blanco. The expression is distilled at the same facility where LALO’s base expression is produced, Grupo Tequilero Mexico (NOM 1468).
I’ve sampled LALO High Proof several times. Bold, spicy, and full-bodied on the nose, it brings aromas ranging from cooked fruit and baked rye bread to sweet caramelized onion and even buttermilk. The palate leans sweet and then spiced: honey, brown sugar, and rose-infused simple syrup lead, followed quickly by roasted pineapple and other tropical fruits. Pops of bright red candied cherry and lime jelly meet milky caramel and salted taffy. Thick and rich on the tongue, the higher-ABV blanco carries into a lengthy and sweet (but not cloying) finish, the sort you get from enjoying overripe fruit.
It’s a delicious addition to the brand’s limited lineup. But with such a concentration on blanco tequila, where else might the brand innovate beyond proof?
“While the blanco category offers less flexibility, I believe there’s still plenty of room for innovation and new expressions,” says co-founder Lalo Gonzalez, speaking to Forbes.
“We’re currently exploring some exciting projects that could potentially launch later [in 2025]. Innovations in blanco can come from elements like water, agaves sourced from specific regions within the protected tequila area, yeast and fermentation techniques, and cooking methods, to name a few.”
Gonzalez also told Forbes a positive response from LALO High Proof has given the company reason to continue thinking of potential new expressions down the line.
“[W]e’ve always focused on blanco because it’s the expression we started with and the one we personally love to drink. That said, we’ve been so humbled by the interest in other expressions of our tequila, it’s a wonderful compliment.”
But he stopped short of saying whether or not the brand would ever expand beyond blanco.
“While we don’t currently produce aged expressions, we’ve definitely taken note of the enthusiasm, and we will see what’s to come—we’re still early in our tequila journey and enjoying the ride with our consumers.
LALO High Proof is currently available for $74.99 across most American markets.
LALO, a popular tequila brand known for its high-quality blanco tequila, has recently launched a new product that has tequila lovers buzzing with excitement. The new addition to their lineup is a delicious high-proof tequila that promises to pack a punch while still maintaining the smooth and crisp flavor profile that LALO is known for.
With this bold move into the high-proof tequila market, many fans of the brand are wondering where else LALO can go with their blanco-only brand. Some are speculating that the brand may venture into aged tequilas, experimenting with different barrel finishes and aging techniques to create unique and complex flavor profiles. Others are hoping to see LALO expand their product line to include flavored tequilas or ready-to-drink cocktails.
No matter where LALO decides to take their brand next, one thing is for certain – fans of the brand can expect nothing less than exceptional quality and delicious flavor in every bottle. Stay tuned to see what exciting new offerings LALO has in store for tequila connoisseurs everywhere. Cheers to the future of LALO tequila!

California Agave Council founding Director Craig Reynolds weighs in on tequila shortages and why several California distilleries are turning to Agave-based spirits on ‘Kennedy.’
Drawing from a desire to provide consumers with innovative products harvested exclusively from Mexico, one spirit brand is staying true to its commitment and producing only additive-free blanco tequila as the company continues to grow its product line amid shifts in the spirits’ category.
Eduardo “Lalo” González, grandson of Don Julio and co-founder of Lalo Spirits, unveiled High Proof, a limited-edition release of 108 proof (54% ABV) tequila blanco, which expanded the brand’s portfolio from one product.
“The High Proof is an undiluted version of our 80 proof,” González told FOX Business. “You have a tequila that is not watered down. All the flavors, aromas, the flavor profile of the juice, is kind of like on steroids. It’s highlighted even more.”

Cinnamon, cooked agave and tropical notes are among the pungent aromas found in a pour of High Proof.
“It’s very well-balanced,” González said.
High Proof is made with only three ingredients; agave sourced from the Jalisco highlands, water from the distillery’s well and champagne yeast.
“We did a test of four different yeasts and the one that kind of highlighted this balance that I wanted in the final product was champagne yeast,” González said.

With the help of his childhood friend and co-founder, David Carballido, González launched High Proof on digital shelves in late October 2024. The product sold out on the brand’s website within one week.
“We were like okay, we need more,” he said.
Today, consumers can purchase a second drop of High Proof, which retails for $74.99, online and in select stores and restaurants.
“It’s kind of giving us the North Star of how we should do it this year,” González said.
González revealed that because of High Proof’s success, the Lalo team is strongly considering limited edition releases a few times a year.
TEQUILA AND MEZCAL: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

At the overwhelming request from consumers for an aged expression, González said he often finds himself drumming up new ideas and considering the possibilities of blanco.
“The consumer is looking for more crafty options, more authentic options in the realm of spirits and tequila obviously,” he said. “They’re being more, I don’t know if I’d call it picky, but they investigate more. They read more. They want to know more about what they’re drinking and eating and putting in their body.”
González said Lalo can shapeshift a multitude of limited edition products by exploring agave from a region outside of Jalisco, experimenting with cooking and extraction methods, types of yeast and the source of water, in order to expand.

“Using rain water is possible, though challenging,” González told FOX Business. “I don’t know how sustainable it is.”
“It’s in the realm of possibilities for a limited release.”
