  • Man City ‘reject Chelsea deadline day approach’ but lay out terms to strike agreement | Football | Sport

Manchester City have reportedly slapped down an approach from Chelsea for midfield prospect Nico O’Reilly.

The 19-year-old has been knocking on the door of Pep Guardiola‘s first team this season with starts in the Community Shield, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. He opened his senior account against Salford City last month and has impressed with substitute appearances in the Premier League and in Europe.

According to ESPN, Chelsea have tested the waters regarding a move for O’Reilly, but they were knocked back by the reigning Premier League champions. However, it is said that City would be willing to sell the youngster if a buy-back clause is included in any potential deal.

Manchester-born O’Reilly has been part of City’s academy since 2011. His progress has seen him rewarded with England recognition, and he is capped up to Under-20 level with the Three Lions.

City have made buy-back clauses common practice when selling their top young talent in recent years. They reportedly had the option to bring Romeo Lavia back to the Etihad Stadium before his move to Stamford Bridge, and they have the same opportunity with Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.

The Blues have made a killing through selling off academy talent, with Lavia and Delap among those to fetch handsome fees in the transfer market. Those sales have left City in a healthy PSR position, which has funded their frivolous spending in the current window.

Guardiola has taken this turbulent season as his cue to instigate a squad rebuild. The club have spent big on Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis, while 18-year-old defender Juma Bah has been signed from Real Valladolid before being sent on loan to Lens.

And City now look set to solve arguably their biggest problem of the campaign, following Rodri’s ACL rupture, by signing an all-action midfielder. Fabrizio Romano claims that City and FC Porto have reached an agreement for Nico Gonzalez, which involves a £50million total package.

Gonzalez was always likely to command a hefty fee as his former club, Barcelona, will reportedly be due up to 40 per cent of it due to a sell-on clause they included in his move to Portugal.

The 23-year-old, who can play as a midfield anchor or as a box-to-box option, has scored five goals and laid on three assists in the league this term. He has also contributed to three goals in seven Europa League games.

In a shocking turn of events on deadline day, Manchester City have reportedly rejected Chelsea’s approach for one of their star players. However, sources close to the situation have revealed that City are open to striking an agreement with the London club under certain terms.

According to reports, Chelsea made a last-minute bid for the player in question, but City swiftly turned down the offer. Despite this initial rejection, it is understood that City are willing to negotiate with Chelsea if certain conditions are met.

The terms laid out by City include a substantial transfer fee, as well as the inclusion of a player exchange or potential add-ons to sweeten the deal. It is believed that City are determined to get the best possible deal for their player and are open to discussions with Chelsea to reach a compromise.

As the deadline day drama unfolds, both clubs will be looking to reach an agreement that suits all parties involved. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

  • Orioles agree to terms with outfielder Dylan Carlson

The Orioles today announced that they have agreed to terms with outfielder DYLAN CARLSON on a one-year major league contract for the 2025 season.

Carlson, 26, slashed .209/.287/.277 (49-for-235) with seven doubles, three home runs, 19 runs scored, 25 RBI, 22 walks, five hit-by-pitches, and two stolen bases in 96 games between the St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays in 2024. He opened the year on 10-day Injured List recovering from a left acromioclavicular (AC) joint sprain before being reinstated by St. Louis on May 5. Carlson was acquired by the Rays in exchange for right-handed pitcher Shawn Armstrong on July 30, 2024. In 39 day games last season, he slashed .263/.327/.305 (25-for-95) compared to a .171/.261/.257 (24-for-140) slash line in 57 night games.

In five big league seasons between the two clubs, Carlson has batted .237/.317/.376 (365-for-1538) with 83 doubles, 10 triples, 37 home runs, 192 runs scored, 175 RBI, 158 walks (3 IBB), 30 hit-by-pitches, and 13 stolen bases in 484 games. Carlson, a switch-hitter, is a lifetime .285/.361/.431 (123-for-432) hitter versus left-handed pitchers compared to a .219/.300/.355 (242-for-1106) hitter against righties. He has appeared in the Postseason three times with St. Louis (2020-22) and his six Wild Card Series games trail only Yadier Molina (7) for the most among Cardinals players. In 2021, he finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting and set the Cardinals single-season records for rookie switch-hitters with 53 extra-base hits, 237 total bases, 31 doubles, 65 RBI, and 57 walks. Carlson was originally selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round (No. 33 overall) of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Elk Grove (CA) High School.

To make room on the 40-man roster, infielder JACOB AMAYA has been designated for assignment. The Orioles’ 40-man roster currently has 40 players.

The Baltimore Orioles have made a big move in free agency, agreeing to terms with outfielder Dylan Carlson. The young phenom is set to bring his talents to Camden Yards and provide a boost to the Orioles’ lineup. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting signing! #Orioles #DylanCarlson #MLBFreeAgency

  • Bibas family concerned after Hamas breaks hostage deal terms – Israel News

When Shiri, Ariel, and Kfir Bibas were not on the list of the names of the captives set to be released on Saturday, “our world caved in on us,” their family said in a post on Instagram.

Shiri, Ariel, and Kfir – as civilian women and children – should have been released before female soldiers, according to the terms of the hostage deal.

When Hamas announced that four female soldiers – Karina  Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Liri Albag, and Naama Levy would be released on Saturday, it raised questions regarding the release of the Bibas family, as well as Arbel Yehoud – another civilian woman being held by Hamas.

Hamas has since announced that Arbel Yehoud will be released next week, Reuters reported, and Israel is working to ensure her release comes sooner.

The Bibas relatives added that hearing that their family members were not on the list for Saturday was earth-shattering despite the fact that they had been prepared for the possibility in advance.

Kfir and Ariel Bibas, who are both still in Hamas captivity. (credit: The Bibas family)

“We had hoped to see Shiri and the kids on the list, which was supposed to be a list of civilians,” the family said.

“An exciting and complex day is ahead of us. Liri, Daniella, Naama, and Karina, we are waiting to see you smiling and surrounded by your amazing families at home.

“Shiri, Yarden, Ariel, and Kfir, we will continue to hope and demand you [are brought home],” they said.“It’s not over until it’s over.”

Shiri, Ariel, and Kfir were taken from Kibbutz Nir Oz, along with father Yarden Bibas, who is also slated to be released in the first stage of the deal.

Concern for the Bibas families wellbeing

There is “serious concern” regarding the well-being of Shiri, Ariel, and Kfir, IDF Chief Spokesperson R.-Adm. Daniel Hagari said on Saturday, also noting that the IDF remains “steadfast in our determination” to bring them home.Hamas’s al-Qassam Brigade claimed in November 2023 that Shiri and her two sons had been killed, but the IDF has not established if these claims are true.

Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad have previously made false claims about the status of the hostages.

The family addressed concerns about Shiri, Ariel, and Kfir’s well-being, stressing that this concern does not absolve the state from its obligation to give the family certainty or the media from speaking about them.

“In the evening, when we turned on the news, our pain, our fight, and mostly the vital discussion of the complexity and disaster of the fact that they are not on the list was gone, not talked about by journalists in the studios,” the family said.

“Does the serious concern for their lives cancel out the fact that they are civilians in captivity who need to come home?” the family asked, also asking if it cancels the state’s obligation to give the family certainty regarding the fate of their loved ones, or if it cancels out the need to show Shiri’s picture as a civilian held hostage in Gaza.

    “The answer is no.”

The Bibas family is expressing deep concern after Hamas broke the terms of a recent hostage deal with Israel. The deal, which was brokered by Egyptian mediators, was meant to secure the release of two Israeli civilians, Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, as well as the remains of two Israeli soldiers, Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul.

However, Hamas failed to uphold their end of the agreement, as they have not provided any information on the condition or location of the hostages. This has left the Bibas family in a state of uncertainty and worry, as they await news of their loved ones.

The Israeli government has condemned Hamas for their breach of the deal and has called for the immediate release of the hostages. The Bibas family is urging the international community to put pressure on Hamas to fulfill their obligations and bring their family members home safely.

As the situation continues to unfold, the Bibas family is holding out hope for a swift resolution and the safe return of their loved ones.

  • Rangers Agree to Terms with Will Borgen

New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury announced today that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Will Borgen on a five-year contract extension.

Borgen, 28, has registered three points (1G-2A) in 17 games for the Rangers since being acquired from the Seattle Kraken on Dec. 18. In that span, he ranks third on the team in blocked shots (29), fifth in hits (30), sixth in total time-on-ice (316:00). From the time he made his Rangers debut on Dec. 20 through the start of play today, he is one of only 14 NHL players with 25+ hits and 25+ blocked shots. In addition, the team holds a 9-5-3 record for 21 points with him in the lineup.

Between the Rangers and Kraken this year, the Moorhead, Minnesota native has notched five points (2G-3A) in 50 games along with 78 hits. Over this NHL career, he has tallied 10 goals and 48 assists for 58 points in 264 games between the Rangers, Kraken and Buffalo Sabres. He registered 203 hits in 2022-23 and 195 hits in 2023-24, and he ranks 13th among NHL defensemen in hits since the start of the 2022-23 season (476).

Borgen was originally selected by Buffalo in the fourth round, 92nd overall, of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

The New York Rangers have announced that they have agreed to terms with defenseman Will Borgen on a contract. Borgen, 24, was acquired by the Rangers in a trade with the Seattle Kraken earlier this summer.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound blueliner brings a physical presence to the Rangers’ defensive corps and is known for his strong defensive play and shot-blocking abilities. Borgen played in 35 games for the Kraken last season, recording three assists and 35 penalty minutes.

With this signing, the Rangers have added another young and talented defenseman to their roster as they look to solidify their defensive depth for the upcoming season. Fans can look forward to seeing Borgen in action when the Rangers hit the ice this fall.

  • Ryan Day gets Ohio State back atop college football. Now he’ll make an NFL call on his own terms

ATLANTA — Please stay, Ryan Day. Give dear ol’ Ohio State a chance to win consecutive national championships. Give the Buckeyes a shot at being what Alabama was or what Georgia might be.

Please stay, Ryan Day, because right now you’re too good for the Buckeyes. That’s less of a shiv in the back to the crazed Scarlet and Gray critics who kicked you to the curb 7 ½ weeks ago, after the latest Michigan loss, and more of a fact. Right now after beating Notre Dame 34-23 to win the program’s ninth championship and first in 10 years, you’re a made man. You’re good for life in Ohio. You never have to buy a drink on High Street again — or Cleveland or Cincinnati or Pickerington or wherever Bucknuts grow.

You’re minted and gold-plated as a Buckeye legend. Or should be.

The leverage now is also all yours. If you’re thinking promotion, Ryan — and you’d better be at this point — there’s only one place to go after Monday’s dunking of the Domers. It’s the place you came from on the recommendation from your mentor Chip Kelly to become Urban Meyer’s offensive coordinator seven years ago.

The NFL. It’s a place where you made your name as an up and comer. It’s the place that got you to Ohio State. Now you can write your own ticket back to where you came from.

Maybe not right away. His son, RJ, has two more years of high school quarterbacking to do. The Jags, Cowboys, Jets, Saints and Raiders are still open and we’re not sure if those are great city/owner/roster fits for him. Day is a diehard Patriots fan. The stars didn’t align for that to happen this cycle and New England hired former Bucknutter Mike Vrable, who should be in Foxboro a long time. But Day is in some ways an NFL guy, raised in New England with hazy 20-something memories of cross-country drives to Super Bowls far away.

But eventually, perhaps soon, Day will land an NFL match that suits him best, because the rest of the country knows what those keyboard warriors in your own state sometimes forget: You’re a damn good coach, particularly a damn good offensive mind.

If you’re that made man then Chip Kelly might as well be your consigliere. There’s your movie reference if you need it. The stones on those two to order up that hit to Jeremiah Smith on a deep streak on third down, a win-or-lose proposition that favored the bold.

If you need any more symbolism, with seconds left in the first half LeBron James was shown on the video board in some secluded suite. The Honorary First Buckeye was decked out from head to toe in Scarlet and Gray.

Feeling the moment, LeBron took off his hat to show the crowd. It had the feel of coronation. The Buckeyes were champions by halftime.

Their coach had been underappreciated for a while, the Michigan losses be damned. In this playoff era, you don’t have to win your conference. You don’t even have to play a game to win your conference. At Ohio State, you don’t even have to beat Michigan.

OK, maybe that’s a stretch. It’s less than 10 ½ months to next season’s game at Michigan. Day and the Bucks have lost four in a row to TTUP (The Team Up North).

Except that Day is now minted as an all-time great at Ohio State, or should be. He is 70-10 after his sixth season and continues to be the winningest active coach. Woody Hayes was 57-19-3 through 80 games. Urban Meyer, the last coach to win a natty, was a staggering 72-8. Jim Tressell was 66-14.

Eighty games. That’s not a snapshot. That’s a solid foundation. That’s also just the beginning if Ohio State can hold onto their guy. It was only last month when Ohio State AD Ross Bjork said that Day would “absolutely” be back in 2025 as coach — back when some thought Bjork might be the one giving Day his walking papers.

Now we need to look for the same promise from Day himself that he will be back in the fall. It’s his leverage. He’s earned it.

Ohio State National Championship Gear now available

After taking over as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2019, Ryan Day wasted no time in getting his team back to the top of college football. Under his leadership, the Buckeyes have been dominant, with a record of 23-2 and a Big Ten championship in just two seasons.

Day’s success at Ohio State has not gone unnoticed, and now he is reportedly drawing interest from NFL teams. However, Day is not just going to jump at the first opportunity that comes his way. He wants to make sure that any move to the NFL is on his own terms.

Day has proven himself as a top coach in college football, and he is not going to settle for anything less in the NFL. He wants to be in a situation where he can continue to build a successful program and compete for championships.

While the allure of coaching in the NFL may be tempting, Day is not going to rush into any decisions. He will take his time and evaluate all of his options before making a move.

In the meantime, Buckeye fans can rest assured that Day is fully committed to leading Ohio State to even greater heights. And if and when he does make the jump to the NFL, it will be on his own terms, ensuring that he can continue to build a winning program wherever he goes.

  • FWD.us Applauds President Biden’s Historic Commutations for People Serving Outdated Prison Terms

WASHINGTON, D.C. – FWD.us Executive Director Zoë Towns issued the following statement today after President Biden’s latest historic commutations:

“These final clemency actions will forever define President Biden’s legacy on justice.

“Too often, our criminal justice reforms only apply to the law going forward, leaving behind the very people and injustices that moved us to change. For example, we reached consensus long ago that the crack/powder cocaine sentencing disparity could not be defended on public health or public safety grounds and that it fueled already stark racial disparities. Yet many are still incarcerated on sentences that could not be handed down today.

“We’re grateful for President Biden’s final acts of leadership in delivering relief, justice, and mercy to thousands and, importantly, calling attention to the harms of extreme sentencing and the benefits of reform.”

    Additional Resources

FWD.us, a bipartisan political advocacy group focused on immigration and criminal justice reform, is celebrating President Biden’s recent decision to commute the sentences of individuals serving outdated prison terms.

In a statement released today, FWD.us praised President Biden for taking a bold step towards addressing the injustices of the criminal justice system and giving hope to those who have been disproportionately affected by harsh sentencing laws.

“These commutations are a critical first step towards righting the wrongs of our broken criminal justice system,” said FWD.us President, in the statement. “We applaud President Biden for his commitment to reform and for recognizing the humanity of those who have been needlessly incarcerated for far too long.”

FWD.us also emphasized the need for further action to address systemic issues within the criminal justice system, including mandatory minimum sentencing laws, racial disparities in sentencing, and the need for rehabilitation and reentry resources for those reentering society.

As we celebrate these historic commutations, let us also continue to advocate for meaningful criminal justice reform that prioritizes fairness, equity, and compassion for all individuals impacted by the system.

  • Athletics Agree to Terms with RHP José Leclerc on One-Year Contract

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Athletics agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher José Leclerc on a one-year contract for the 2025 season, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated right-handed pitcher Will Klein for assignment.

Leclerc was 6-5 with a save, a 4.32 ERA and .671 opponents OPS in 64 relief appearances with Texas last year. He struck out 89 batters in 66.2 innings (12.02 per nine innings) and tied for 14th in the majors among relievers in strikeouts. The 31-year-old right-hander had a career high in wins, and his games pitched, innings pitched and strikeouts were the second most of his career and his most since 2019. Leclerc held the opposition to a .227 batting average, including .193 against right-handed hitters, but walked 32 for a .323 on-base percentage.

Leclerc has pitched eight seasons in the majors, all with Texas, and is 12-20 with 41 saves and a 3.27 ERA in 350 career appearances. He has 473 strikeouts in 360.1 innings (11.81 per nine innings) and is the Rangers/Senators franchise record holder for most strikeouts by a reliever. Originally signed by Texas out of the Dominican Republic in 2010 at the age of 16, Leclerc made his Major League debut in 2016. He logged a 1.56 ERA and 12 saves in 59 relief appearances in 2018 and had 14 saves and 100 strikeouts in 68.2 innings over 70 relief appearances in 2019. Leclerc missed nearly the entire 2020 season with a torn right teres major muscle and was out for the entire 2021 season following “Tommy John” surgery. He has pitched in 160 games in three seasons since the surgery and has a 3.36 ERA, .629 opponents OPS and 210 strikeouts in 171.1 innings since his return.

Klein was one of three players acquired from Kansas City in the Lucas Erceg trade on July 30, 2024. He made his Major League debut last year, pitching in five games for the Royals and three for the A’s. The 25-year-old right-hander combined for an 11.05 ERA and .990 opponents OPS in eight games overall. Klein spent the balance of the season at the Triple-A level and was a combined 2-2 with a minor league career-high nine saves, a 3.77 ERA and .645 opponents OPS in 38 relief appearances with Omaha (34 games) and Las Vegas (four games).

The Athletics have reached an agreement with right-handed pitcher José Leclerc on a one-year contract. Leclerc, who was previously with the Texas Rangers, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Oakland bullpen.

The 28-year-old Dominican native has been a reliable and effective reliever throughout his career, boasting a career ERA of 3.19 and 295 strikeouts in 220 innings pitched. Known for his electric fastball and devastating slider, Leclerc has the ability to shut down opposing hitters in high-leverage situations.

With the addition of Leclerc, the Athletics’ bullpen gets a significant boost, adding depth and versatility to an already strong pitching staff. His presence will undoubtedly improve the team’s chances of success in the upcoming season.

Athletics fans can look forward to seeing Leclerc take the mound in the green and gold, as he brings his talents to Oakland and helps lead the team to victory. Stay tuned for more updates as the season approaches.

  • Mother and son given lengthy prison terms for their roles in the killings of 8 Ohio family members

Mother and son given lengthy prison terms for their roles in the killings of 8 Ohio family members

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Two more family members convicted in the killings of eight members of an Ohio family received lengthy prison terms on Friday for their roles in the 2016 shootings, as prosecutions near completion in what has been described as the most heinous crime in modern Ohio history.

Visiting Judge Jonathan Hein sentenced Edward “Jake” Wagner to life in prison with the chance of parole in 32 years — after 12 years on gun charges and then 20 for the murders of five of the eight victims.

It was a surprising turn, given that Wagner had pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and other charges and agreed earlier to serve eight consecutive life sentences with no chance of parole. However, Hein said he took into account other participants’ sentences in the case, as well as Wagner’s cooperation with authorities in solving the murders of seven adults and a teenager from the Rhoden family in southern Ohio’s Pike County.

Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.

Hein sentenced Wagner’s mother, Angela Wagner, to 30 years including credit for six years served. She had pleaded guilty to her role in helping plan the slayings.

Angela’s mother, Rita Holcomb, was also sentenced, receiving five years of probation, a $750 fine and a suspended 180-day jail sentence, seven days of which she’s already served, for lying to investigators.

“Each generation has its own people who can prove the depths of depravity of human nature, and that’s what this case did,” the judge said before handing down the sentences in a Waverly courtroom, about 80 miles (129 kilometers) south of Columbus. “It showed the boundless depravity of people who have no respect for others, only their own self-interest in mind.”

During the emotional hearing, Andrea Shoemaker, the mother of shooting victim Hannah Gilley, scorned Jake Wagner as the “spawn of Satan” and his mother as “evil.” A group of the victims’ supporters later walked out of the packed courtroom in protest as Wagner went on at length about Christian forgiveness during his final statement to the judge.

Wagner told the courtroom that two or three weeks after the murders, he prayed the most sincere prayer of his life.

“I asked God, I said, ‘Put me and my family back on the straight and narrow path, by any means necessary,” he said. “I can tell you today I am not sorry that I got caught. I am sorry for what I’ve done, but I’m glad I got caught. I 100% believe that it was Jesus who made me get caught to answer my prayer.”

George Wagner IV, who is Angela’s son and Jake’s brother, was sentenced in June to eight consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. The judge said he wanted to distinguish Jake’s sentence from his brother’s, since Jake had cooperated with authorities while George chose to go to trial. Hein said he also took into account that Angela was facing a maximum sentence of 30 years, even though she had the power to put an end to the vicious murder plot with a single phone call and chose not to.

According to prosecutors, George Wagner, his brother and their parents plotted the killings amid a dispute over custody of Wagner’s niece, whose mother was among those slain.

The April 2016 shootings at three mobile homes and a camper near Piketon terrified residents in that part of rural Ohio and initially prompted speculation about drug cartel involvement. The resulting multimillion-dollar investigation and prosecution is among the state’s most extensive.

The victims were 40-year-old Christopher Rhoden Sr. and his ex-wife, 37-year-old Dana Rhoden; their three children, 20-year-old Clarence “Frankie” Rhoden, 19-year-old Hanna Rhoden and 16-year-old Christopher Rhoden Jr.; 20-year-old Hannah Gilley, who was Clarence Rhoden’s fiancee; Christopher Rhoden Sr.’s brother, 44-year-old Kenneth Rhoden; and a cousin, 38-year-old Gary Rhoden.

The patriarch of the Wagner family, George “Billy” Wagner III, is the last of four family members facing charges in the case. Hein recently agreed to move his trial out of Pike County, a small rural community intimately familiar with the case.

This story has been updated to correct Edward “Jake” Wagner sentence to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 32 years, not 32 years in prison.

A mother and son have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for their roles in the brutal killings of 8 family members in Ohio. The two were convicted of planning and carrying out the massacre, which shocked the small community where the family lived.

The mother, who was described as the mastermind behind the killings, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Her son, who was her accomplice in the crime, was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

The motive for the killings remains unclear, but prosecutors believe it was related to a long-standing family feud. The victims, which included children as young as 16 years old, were found shot to death in their homes.

The judge described the crimes as “heinous and premeditated” and said that the mother and son showed no remorse for their actions. The community has been left reeling from the tragedy, and many are struggling to come to terms with the loss of so many loved ones.

As the mother and son begin their long prison sentences, the community is left to grapple with the aftermath of the senseless violence that has torn apart so many lives. May justice be served for the victims and their families.
