  • Texans RB Joe Mixon says NFL fined him $25K over ref criticism he didn’t make

Joe Mixon and his agent are claiming the NFL fined the Houston Texans running back $25,000 for comments he did not make following the AFC divisional round defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday.

In a game where calls made against the Texans for penalties on Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes have been under scrutiny, Mixon gave his thoughts on the officiating afterward.

“Everybody knows how it is playing up here. You can never leave it into the refs’ hands,” Mixon said. “The whole world sees, man, what it is. It is what it is. When it comes down to it, you can never leave it into the refs’ hands. It’s all good, though.”

Agreeing with Mixon was former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who posted on X, “Why play the game if every 50/50 call goes with Chiefs. These officials are [trash] & bias.”

According to ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime, a Sports Illustrated story originally attributed Houshmandzadeh’s comment to Mixon, which was cited in the $25,000 fine.

Mixon posted on Wednesday about the apparent mistake by the NFL saying, “I’m getting fined by the @nfl for what someone else said. What’s next? I get fined by them for Connor McDavid cross-checking an opponent on a @nhl game!”

Mixon’s agent told ESPN that they will appeal the fine to “defend” Mixon and will “explore all other legal avenues to rectify this situation.”

After Mixon went public on Wednesday, Pro Football Talk reports that the NFL re-issued the $25,000 fine and cited the running back’s comment, “Everybody knows how it is playing up here. You can never leave it in the refs’ hands. The whole world see, man” after the Chiefs game.

That quote was not mentioned in Mixon’s initial fine letter.

Mixon was previously fined $11,255 following their wild-card round win over the Los Angeles Chargers for “unnecessary roughness.”

In a shocking turn of events, Texans running back Joe Mixon revealed that the NFL fined him $25,000 for criticizing referees – even though he never made any such comments. Mixon expressed his frustration with the league’s decision, stating that he never said anything disparaging about the officials during any games or interviews.

Many fans and analysts are puzzled by the NFL’s actions, questioning the fairness and transparency of the fine. Mixon’s agent has vowed to appeal the ruling and clear his client’s name, as the running back is known for his professionalism and respect for the game.

The incident has sparked a debate about the NFL’s disciplinary process and the need for more accountability and consistency when it comes to fines and suspensions. As the situation unfolds, Mixon remains focused on his preparation for the upcoming season and is determined to prove his worth on the field.

  • Texans Part Ways With Team President Following Divisional Round Exit

The Houston Texans have parted ways with team president Greg Grissom following the franchise’s divisional round playoff exit at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs.

“We want to thank Greg for his contributions to the organization,” Texans CEO Cal McNair said in a statement. “Since he became our president in 2021, Greg helped me implement numerous initatives to help our organization fearlessly evolve and grow in many ways, which we are thankful for. We wish Greg and his family all the best in the future. We will provide updates regarding the team’s next president in the coming days.”

“Leading the Houston Texans business operations has been the opportunity of a lifetime,” Grissom said. “After almost 25 years with the Texans, including the last four as president, I feel it’s the right time to embrace new challenges and opportunities. I want to thank Janice McNair and Cal McNair and Hannah McNair for their support and the opportunity to help lead this organization.”

Grissom had been a part of the Texans organization since 2002 and earned several promotions up to president throughout his two-plus decade run in Houston.

The Houston Texans have announced that they have parted ways with team president Jamey Rootes following their divisional round exit in the playoffs.

Rootes had been with the Texans for over 20 years, serving as the team’s president since 2019. His departure comes after the Texans fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round of the playoffs, marking another disappointing end to their season.

The decision to part ways with Rootes comes as the Texans look to make changes and move in a new direction following a tumultuous season that included the trade of star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and the firing of head coach Bill O’Brien.

The Texans have not yet announced who will be taking over as team president, but it is clear that changes are on the horizon for the franchise as they look to turn things around and build towards a brighter future.

  • Texans amicably part ways with team president despite back-to-back AFC South division titles

In a surprise move, the Houston Texans have amicably parted ways with team president Greg Grissom, the team announced Thursday. The move was made despite the Texans winning a second consecutive AFC South division title in 2024. The Texans have also won playoff games in consecutive years.

“We want to thank Greg for his contributions to the organization,” Texans CEO Cal McNair said in a statement. “Since he became our team president in 2021, Greg helped me implement numerous initiatives to help our organization fearlessly evolve and grow in many ways, which we are thankful for. We wish Greg and his family nothing but the best in the future. We will provide updates regarding the team’s next president in the coming days.”

Specifically, Grissom oversaw the team’s management and direction of business operations. He had been with the franchise for nearly 25 years, including the last four as team president. Grissom said that he feels that “it’s the right time to embrace new challenges opportunities.”

“Over the past four years, I am incredibly proud of of what we accomplished for our fans and our business,” he said in a statement. “I am grateful for my time with the Texans and look forward to what’s next.”

As noted above, the Texans have quickly become of the NFL’s upper-echelon teams. After winning just seven games during Grissom’s first two years as president, the Texans won 22 games over the past two seasons. Houston hosted and won AFC wild-card games both seasons, including a 32-12 win over the Chargers earlier this month.

Expect the Texans to move quickly to find their next president, with the start of free agency less than two months away.

The Houston Texans have announced that they have amicably parted ways with team president, Jamey Rootes, despite the team’s recent success in winning back-to-back AFC South division titles.

Rootes had been with the Texans organization for over 20 years, serving as team president since 2000. During his tenure, the team saw significant growth in both revenue and fan engagement, with Rootes playing a key role in the development of NRG Stadium and the team’s overall business operations.

Despite the success on the field, the Texans have decided to make a change in leadership at the top, citing a desire to take the organization in a new direction. In a statement, Texans CEO Cal McNair thanked Rootes for his years of service and wished him well in his future endeavors.

The search for a new team president is already underway, with the Texans looking to find a candidate who can continue to build on the team’s recent success and help guide them towards even greater achievements in the future.

  • Texans move on from team president Greg Grissom

HOUSTON – The Texans have moved on from team president Greg Grissom and will be looking for new leadership on the business side of their front office, according to league sources.

The team later confirmed Grissom’s departure.

“We want to thank Greg for his contributions to the organization,” Texans chairman and CEO Cal McNair said in a statement. “Since he became our team president in 2021, Greg helped me implement numerous initiatives to help our organization fearlessly evolve and grow in many ways, which we are very thankful for. We wish Greg and his family all the best in the future. We will provide updates regarding the team’s next president in the coming days.”

Grissom was previously promoted to team president in 2021 from senior vice president of corporate development as the replacement for former team president Jamey Rootes.

Grissom was known for his strong relationships and experience interacting with corporate sponsors, community leaders and charities.

Grissom had operated as a key lieutenant for the AFC South franchise since the Texans’ inaugural season in 2002, and he was promoted five separate times.

“Leading the Houston Texans business operations has been the opportunity of a lifetime,” Grissom said in a statement. “After almost 25 years with the Texans, including the last four as President, I feel it’s the right time to embrace new challenges and opportunities. I want to thank Janice McNair and Cal and Hannah McNair for their support and the opportunity to help lead this organization.

“Over the past four years, I am incredibly proud of what we accomplished for our fans and for our business. Most of all, I am thankful for the relationships I’ve built with my Texans teammates, everyone at NRG Park, corporate and civic leaders across Houston and Harris County, and, of course, our passionate Texans fans. These connections have been the most rewarding part of my time here and will always hold a special place in my life. I am grateful for my time with the Texans and look forward to what’s next.”

Grissom was elevated following an interview process that included him, former Texans chief marketing officer Jennifer Davenport along with external candidates. That included Tony Wyllie, a Texas Southern graduate who is the regional president and managing director for Special Olympics North America and a former senior vice president of communications for the Washington Football Team who previously led the Texans, Rams and Titans’ public relations departments.

Grissom was promoted to his previous executive role in 2017.

Grissom, who previously worked for the Astros as an account services manager and club promotions coordinator, is on the board of directors of the Houston Food Bank, originally joined the Texans as a corporate sales manager before being promoted to director of corporate development, senior director of corporate development and vice president of corporate development. In that role, he oversaw all sales and partnership of the Texans’ corporate partnerships.

Before joining the Texans, Grissom worked for Enron Corp as a sports marketing specialist. A native of Austin and a married father of two children, Grissom attended Baylor University.

The Houston Texans have officially announced that they are parting ways with team president Greg Grissom. This move comes after a disappointing season for the Texans, who finished with a 4-13 record and missed the playoffs.

Grissom had been with the team for just over a year, taking on the role of team president in January 2021. However, his tenure was marred by controversy and criticism, with many fans and analysts pointing to his leadership as a key factor in the team’s struggles.

In a statement released by the Texans, owner Cal McNair thanked Grissom for his contributions to the team but stated that it was time for a change in leadership. McNair also mentioned that the team will begin a search for a new team president immediately.

With the Texans looking to rebuild and improve on their performance next season, the decision to part ways with Grissom is seen as a necessary step in the right direction. Fans will be watching closely to see who the team brings in to lead them into the future.

Ian Rapoport reported on the fire but has officially changed the language to reflect that Grissom and the Texans have mutually parted ways.

After being bounced out of the playoffs in back-to-back Divisional Round appearances, it appears the team was comfortable shaking things up regarding a high front-office level.

Grissom has served in the role as the Texans president since March 2021, according to his LinkedIn page. He has also spent the last 23 years with the organization, serving in many roles such as corporate development manager, director of corporate development, and senior vice president of corporate development.

After spending the last 23 years with the Texans, Grissom will now presumably look for another role in the NFL world.

The Texans also released a statement on Grissom being let go.

“The Houston Texans have amicably parted ways with Team President Greg Grissoom, the club announced on Thursday.

“We want to thank Greg for his contributions to the organization,” said Chair and CEO Cal McNair, “Since he became our team president in 2023, Greg helped me implement numerous initiatives to help our organization fearlessly and evolve and grow in many ways, which we are thankful for. We wish Greg and his family all the best in the future. We will provide updates regarding the team’s next president in the coming days.”

“Leading the Houston Texans business operations has been the opportunity of a lifetime,” Grissom said. “After almost 25 years with the Texans, including the last four as President, I feel its the right time to embrace new challenges and opportunity. I want to thank Janice McNair and Cal and Hannah McNair for their support and the opportunity to help lead this organization. These connections have been the most rewarding part of my time here and will always hold a special place in my life. I am grateful for my time with the Texans and look forward to what’s next.”

The Texans will now look for a new team president to lead the organization moving forward. After the success the team has had with DeMeco Ryans as head coach and a strong young talent in C.J. Stroud, Houston might have no trouble at all finding a new front-office leader.

  • Patrick Mahomes amid criticism that he flopped vs. Texans: ‘I probably shouldn’t have done that’

As usual, officiating is a major storyline in the NFL playoffs. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are at the center of it.

The conversation’s gotten so loud around the Chiefs that Mahomes was asked to address it during a local radio interview in Kansas City with 96.5 The Fan on Wednesday. He doesn’t agree that he or the Chiefs are getting beneficial calls from officials that impact the outcome of games.

But he did make one surprising admission.

“I would say the only one I felt like I probably did too much was the one on the sideline where I didn’t get the flag,” Mahomes said. “The refs saw it and didn’t throw a flag. I understood it immediately and know that I probably shouldn’t have done that.”

    Here’s the play in question:

At the end of a scramble against Houston, Mahomes slowed down as he approached the sideline. Texans linebacker Henry To’oTo’o shoved Mahomes inbounds, and Mahomes went tumbling out of bounds with his arms flailing above his head.

In a league obsessed with protecting quarterbacks, it’s the kind of play that could draw a flag for a late hit from an official who wasn’t paying enough attention. Fans of opposing teams would suggest that Mahomes was intentionally baiting officials into a flag while capitalizing on his status as the league’s biggest star.

Mahomes’ admission on Wednesday all but acknowledged that, yeah, that’s exactly what he was doing. Alas, officials weren’t fooled, and the play did not draw a flag for a late hit.

But there were multiple flags thrown against the Texans for hits on Mahomes that were questionable at best. Take this play, in which two Texans defenders collided when attempting to tackle Mahomes at the end of a run:

Mahomes was clearly a runner on the play and slid at the last second as Chiefs defenders To’oTo’o and Folorunso Fatukasi converged on him. To’oTo’o’s and Fatukasi’s helmets collided as Mahomes went to the ground.

To’oTo’o drew a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty for the hit that made marginal if any contact to Mahomes’ helmet. Here’s the play again in slow motion showing that the helmet-to-helmet contact was primarily between the two Texans players.

And again, Mahomes was a runner on the play who slid at the very last second.

But the flag was thrown, and the Chiefs went on to score a touchdown on the drive to extend their lead to 20-12. Here’s what Mahomes had to say about that play:

“The one that everybody’s talking about where I fell down,” Mahomes said. “I was just trying to get out of the way of getting smoked by the defensive linemen running. So I’ll try to keep doing that and not take those hits. Because that’s the smart way to stay in the football game.”

That makes sense. Mahomes is smart to avoid getting sandwiched by two Texans defenders. But Mahomes’ explanation doesn’t address the fault of the refs, who threw a penalty flag when they shouldn’t have.

It’s not on Mahomes that the refs threw a flag. It is on the NFL and its officials to be better. The NFL instead defended the call on Sunday in comments from its chief rules analyst and former vice president of officiating, Walt Anderson.

“This is one of those areas that is also going to be debated, in terms of what’s forcible, what’s not,” Anderson said. “But the game is not ever going to be perfect, and one thing we don’t want to do is let perfect be the enemy of good. … In those areas that are gray, and may be debatable, we have to leave those on the field.”

    Anderson also defended this call:

On this play, Texans pass rusher Will Anderson Jr. hit Mahomes in the chest as Mahomes released the ball. The crown of Anderson’s helmet may or may not have grazed Mahomes’ facemask — it’s difficult to determine from replay. If it did, again, the contact was marginal.

The play drew a 15-yard roughing-the-passer penalty that turned a would-be fourth down in Kansas City territory into a first down. The Chiefs went on to score a field goal for a 6-3 lead early in the first quarter. They won the game, 23-14.

Mahomes, meanwhile, downplayed complaints that the Chiefs are getting favorable treatment from officials.

“I’ve kind of learned that no matter what happens during the game, that something is going to come out about it if you win, if you continue to win,” Mahomes said Wednesday. “I don’t really pay attention to it. Obviously, I’ve been on both sides of it as far as how I’ve felt that calls were made.

“But at the end of the day, those guys are doing their best to make the best calls and keep it to where the players are making the plays in the game, and that’s what decides the outcome. Obviously, there was a call here or there that people didn’t agree with, but at the same time I think there were a lot of other plays that decided the outcome of that football game.”

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes faced criticism after a slow start in their recent game against the Houston Texans. Despite leading his team to a comeback victory, Mahomes acknowledged that he did not perform at his best and admitted that he made some mistakes.

In a post-game interview, Mahomes said, “I probably shouldn’t have done that,” referring to his less than stellar performance in the first half of the game. The reigning Super Bowl MVP threw an interception and had some missed opportunities early on, leading some critics to question his ability to lead his team.

However, Mahomes showed his resilience and leadership by leading the Chiefs to a 31-24 victory over the Texans, throwing for 378 yards and three touchdowns. He silenced his critics and proved once again why he is considered one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

Despite the win, Mahomes remains humble and focused on improving his game. He knows that there is always room for growth and that he must continue to work hard to reach his full potential. With his talent and determination, there is no doubt that Mahomes will bounce back from any criticism and lead his team to more victories in the future.

  • NFL play-off results: Kansas City Chiefs beat Houston Texans, Washington Commanders upset Detroit Lions

Detroit were the NFL’s highest scorers this season, setting a host of franchise records including a 15-2 campaign.

Washington were the fifth highest scorers, and after a Jahmyr Gibbs touchdown in the first quarter for Detroit, the two teams produced a thrilling second quarter.

Brian Robinson Jr’s score for Washington sparked a run of six touchdowns and 42 points in just over nine minutes – making it the highest-scoring quarter in play-off history.

Lions tight end Sam LaPorta made a one-handed catch at the back of the end zone, before Terry McLaurin took a Daniels screen pass and burst through a gap to run in a 58-yard score.

Two plays later, Quan Martin returned an interception for a 40-yard touchdown to give Washington a lead they would not relinquish.

Detroit quarterback Jared Goff had to be assessed after being clattered with a block on that play, and although back-up Teddy Bridgewater stepped in during the next drive, the Lions dialled up a thrilling run play, which put Jameson Williams round the outside before following blockers to jog in a 61-yard score.

A Zach Ertz touchdown gave Washington a 31-21 lead at half-time, with the Lions having turned the ball over three times.

Gibbs’ second touchdown in the third quarter cut the gap, but Robinson and Jeremy McNichols both got in from a yard in the fourth quarter to seal victory.

Detroit ultimately had five turnovers, including three interceptions, while Washington did not have any. Daniels was not sacked and passed for two touchdowns and 299 yards to continue his fine rookie season.

The NFL play-off results have been nothing short of exciting, with the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the Houston Texans and the Washington Commanders pulling off a stunning upset against the Detroit Lions.

In a thrilling match-up, the Chiefs showcased their offensive prowess and dynamic playmakers as they overcame an early deficit to secure a convincing victory over the Texans. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the charge with his exceptional passing abilities, while the Chiefs defense made crucial stops to seal the win.

On the other hand, the Commanders shocked the football world by outplaying the favored Lions and emerging victorious in a closely contested game. The Commanders’ gritty defense and timely playmaking on offense proved to be too much for the Lions to handle, as they secured a memorable upset win in front of their home crowd.

  • Chiefs Defeat Texans, 23-14, and Advance to Seventh-Straight AFC Title Game

Houston, which compiled a 15-play, 82-yard touchdown series that ate up more than 10 minutes of clock on its drive proceeding Mahomes’ touchdown throw, netted just 14 yards across its next two drives. Kansas City then added a field goal following the latter Texans’ series, effectively putting the game away.

Mahomes completed 16-of-25 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown in the game, leading the Chiefs to his 16th career postseason victory as a starting quarterback. Those 16 wins are tied with Joe Montana for the second-most in NFL postseason history, trailing only Tom Brady (35).

“This is unreal, [and] I tell the fans the same thing,” Reid said. “We are very lucky to have him here. The stuff he’s doing just doesn’t happen, and that’s why he’s the greatest at doing what he’s done in a relatively young career here.”

Mahomes’ favorite target throughout the night was Kelce, whose performance marked his ninth career playoff game with at least 100 receiving yards. The outing broke a tie with Jerry Rice for the most such games in NFL postseason history.

“People say [that] big-time players make big-time plays in big-time games, and that’s just how simple it is,” Mahomes said. “He’s one of those guys. He doesn’t let the moment be bigger than what it is. He just goes [out] there and executes at a high level just like he does in the regular season. He just does that [at] a little bit higher intensity [in the playoffs].”

The Kansas City Chiefs continue their dominant postseason run as they defeat the Houston Texans 23-14 in the divisional round of the playoffs. With this victory, the Chiefs have advanced to their seventh-straight AFC title game, showcasing their consistency and prowess in the postseason.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes once again displayed his MVP-caliber talent, throwing for 273 yards and two touchdowns. The Chiefs’ offense was firing on all cylinders, with Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill both making big plays to help secure the win.

The Chiefs’ defense also stepped up, holding the Texans to just 14 points and forcing crucial turnovers to swing the momentum in their favor. The team’s resilience and determination were on full display as they overcame an early deficit to secure the victory.

With this win, the Chiefs are now one step closer to defending their Super Bowl title. They will face off against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC championship game, where they will look to punch their ticket to the Super Bowl once again. Chiefs fans can’t wait to see their team continue their quest for another championship.

  • Texans voice dismay with officiating following 23-14 Divisional Round loss to Chiefs

Anderson was cited for roughing the passer on a third-and-8 Mahomes incompletion midway through the third quarter. The first down that accompanied the penalty led to an eventual go-ahead field goal.

“I had forcible contact to the facemask area and so I went with roughing the passer on that play,” referee Clay Martin told pool reporter Aaron Wilson.

In the third quarter, Mahomes scrambled for a gain before sliding. Two Texans players, who collided with each other, also contacted Mahomes. That drew an unnecessary roughness flag and was part of a drive that culminated with a touchdown catch by Travis Kelce.

“So, [Mahomes] slid, obviously and when he slides, he is considered defenseless,” Martin said. “The onus is on the defender. I had forcible contact there to the hairline, the helmet.”

Regardless of any explanation, the Texans didn’t hesitate to voice their views on how they felt the game was called.

“Everybody knows how it is playing up here,” Houston running back Joe Mixon said. “You can never leave it into the refs’ hands. It is what it is. When it comes down to it, you can never leave it into the refs’ hands.”

In total, the Texans had eight penalties accepted against them for 82 yards in comparison to four accepted against the Chiefs for 29 yards. The negative-four accepted penalty margin tied the largest for Kansas City all season. It was also a negative-four margin (6-2) in Week 16 against the Texans.

While the Texans were authoring a narrative of the flags being exclusive to their efforts against the Chiefs, they averaged 7.0 accepted penalties per game in the regular season and had eight accepted penalties in their win over the Chargers the week prior.

“We knew going into this game, man, it was us versus everybody,” Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said. “When I say everybody, I mean everybody. The naysayers, the doubt. Everybody, we had to go against again today. Going into this game knowing what we were up against, we can’t make the mistakes we made. We had a lot of self-inflicted mistakes that happened, whether it was special teams not converting our kicks; defensively, not being where we’re supposed to be in coverage; offensively, not protecting our quarterback and keeping him clean. So, you marry that on top of everything else that we have to deal with, it’s going be a really tough, uphill battle.”

To Ryans’ points, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud was sacked eight times. The Stroud-led offense had just one touchdown.

Meanwhile, kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn missed two kicks (one extra point and a field goal) and had a field goal attempt blocked.

Houston also began the game allowing a 63-yard kickoff return, caused a fumble on the play, didn’t recover and then had Kris Boyd penalized 15 yards for throwing his helmet. He then proceeded to shove Texans special teams coordinator Frank Ross.

“I was lit, I was turnt, I thought we had a good play and I apologize to everybody,” Boyd said. “I apologize to Frank. And I did again, and he told me, ‘Don’t worry about that.’”

The penalties drew the ire of social media and the Texans locker room, but flags have been troublesome all season for Houston, which had more than just the laundry on the field going against it Saturday.

“I’m walking out of here discouraged,” Ryans said. “Like, this one hurts, right? Because I know we’re better football team than we showed today, no matter who we’re playing against. To go back and still have to talk about mistakes that we made and this moment, like, yeah, it’s discouraging to be here, because we gotta be over that at this point in the playoffs, right? Postseason football, you gotta be at your best, you gotta be operating on all cylinders, and for us, we didn’t do that today. So, that’s what I’m discouraged about.”

Texans fans are not happy with the officiating in Sunday’s Divisional Round loss to the Chiefs. Despite jumping out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter, the Texans ultimately fell to the Chiefs 51-31, ending their playoff run.

Many fans took to social media to express their frustration with several controversial calls made by the officials during the game. From questionable pass interference calls to missed holding penalties, Texans supporters feel like the officiating played a significant role in the outcome of the game.

One particular play that has sparked outrage among fans was a fake punt attempt by the Texans in the second quarter that was deemed unsuccessful due to an illegal formation penalty. Fans argue that the penalty was unwarranted and cost the Texans valuable momentum.

Overall, Texans fans are feeling disheartened and disappointed following the loss, with many calling for changes to be made in the officiating process to ensure fair and unbiased calls in future games. Despite the setback, fans are still proud of the team’s accomplishments this season and are hopeful for a better outcome next year.
