  • Texas confirms growing measles outbreak affecting school-aged children

Officials at the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) warn there is a growing measles outbreak involving school-aged children.

The report said that 10 cases have been identified in Gaines County and eight of the cases are school-aged children, of which two are under the age of 5.

All were unvaccinated cases, said officials.

“Due to the highly contagious nature of this disease, additional cases are likely to occur in Gaines County and the surrounding communities,” the alert said.

Seven of the cases have been hospitalized, according to the Texas DSHS.

The rise in cases comes more than two decades after measles was reported eliminated by health agencies in 2000.

This week’s alert went on to advise that additional cases are likely to occur soon.

US MEASLES CASES ARE UP IN 2024. WHAT’S DRIVING THE INCREASE?

“Due to the highly contagious nature of this disease, additional cases are likely to occur in Gaines County and the surrounding communities,” they said.

Officials urged people to immediately report any suspected cases to their local health department with the infected person in their presence.

DSHS said the virus can be transmitted through direct contact with infectious droplets or airborne and spread when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. They also warned that the virus can remain infectious in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area.

Vaccination is the best way for people to avoid infection from measles and other preventable diseases, the advisory said.

“Children too young to be vaccinated are more likely to have severe complications if they get infected with the measles virus,” DSHS said.

The report claims that each MMR dose lowers the risk of infection and the severity of illness if infected.

“DSHS and CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommend children receive one dose of MMR vaccine at 12 to 15 months of age and another at 4 to 6 years. Children too young to be vaccinated are more likely to have severe complications if they get infected with the measles virus,” according to their reports.

In January, the Houston Health Department confirmed two cases of measles, prompting a health alert from the state. They were the first cases in Texas since 2023.

Both cases were unvaccinated adults who had traveled internationally.

In recent news, Texas health officials have confirmed a growing measles outbreak that is affecting school-aged children. The outbreak has been linked to unvaccinated individuals and is causing concern among parents and educators.

Measles is a highly contagious virus that can be spread through the air by coughing and sneezing. Symptoms of measles include a high fever, cough, runny nose, and a rash that typically starts on the face and spreads down the body.

Health officials are urging parents to make sure their children are up to date on their measles vaccinations to help prevent the spread of the virus. Vaccination is the best way to protect against measles and other preventable diseases.

Schools in the affected areas are taking precautions to prevent further spread of the virus, including increased cleaning and disinfection measures. Parents are being advised to keep their children home if they are showing any symptoms of measles and to seek medical attention if needed.

It is important for everyone to stay informed about the measles outbreak and to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing situation.

  • Texas Republican Calls for Ilhan Omar To Be Deported

A Texas Republican has called for Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a U.S. citizen, to be deported to her home country of Somalia.

“America would be a better place if @IlhanMN were deported back to Somalia,” Brandon Gill wrote Tuesday on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Newsweek has contacted Omar’s office for comment via email outside of normal office hours.

Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) speaks during a news conference with members of the Congressional Border Security Caucus to introduce the Birthright Citizenship Act at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center on January 23, 2025 in Washington,…

    Why It Matters

President Donald Trump has begun enacting his aggressive deportation program.

Immigration and mass deportations were a key element of Trump’s 2024 campaign and Republicans sweeping to power on a national level.

Americans support the need for immigration reform but disagree about how deportation policies should be carried out.

A poll by The New York Times and Ipsos conducted from January 2 to 10 found that 55 percent of voters strongly or somewhat supported such plans. Eighty-eight percent supported “deporting immigrants who are here illegally and have criminal records.”

    What To Know

Gill, a first-term representative for Texas’s 26th Congressional District, was reacting to a video shared on X on Tuesday, featuring a recent interview between the Minnesota Democrat and a reporter.

About half an hour later, in a separate post, Gill said on X, “We should have never let Ilhan Omar into our country.”

Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, arrived in the U.S. as a refugee in 1995 and became a naturalized citizen in 2000 at the age of 17.

In the video, Omar, the first Somali American congresswoman, explained what undocumented Somalis, or those whose documentation may have expired, should do if questioned by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.

“You are not obligated to answer their questions. Just state that your are advised by a lawyer not to answer questions,” Omar told the reporter. “Disclosure of your name, immigration status, and the mode of entry is not mandatory. Learn the laws and prepare yourself and refrain from disclosing information that you prefer them not to know.”

Omar is embroiled in a war of words with tech billionaire Elon Musk over the legal advice she was offering to undocumented immigrants if they encounter ICE agents.

Last year, a misinterpreted clip of Omar’s speech in Somali sparked intense criticism from conservatives, leading to calls for her deportation. In response, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene introduced a motion to censure Omar, later stating to reporters, “I would love to expel her; I think she should be deported, I honestly do,” over the incorrect translation.

    What People Are Saying

A spokesperson for Brandon Gill said in a statement, “Representative Omar’s conduct raises questions about to whom she is most loyal—the American people or illegal aliens from Somalia. Representative Gill simply stated that it is disgraceful for a sitting Congresswoman and U.S. citizen to facilitate the invasion of our country by illegal alien Somalis.”

Elon Musk said in a post, X: “She is breaking the law. Literally. Outright.”

In response, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar said on X: “Hey Elon Every single person in this country deserves to know their rights. That’s legal. Maybe you should brush up on our laws given the fact you’re breaking them to steal American’s sensitive data. PS. This video is manipulated, and I wasn’t even at the event shown.”

“It just shows you how much he lacks an understanding of what the laws of the country are,” Omar said on Tuesday on CNN News Central when asked about Musk’s post.

    What Happens Next

The dispute highlights the deep divisions in U.S. politics over immigration, as Republicans look to enact Trump’s hardline immigration agenda while progressives regroup and plot to oppose his agenda.

In a recent controversial statement, a Texas Republican has called for Congresswoman Ilhan Omar to be deported from the United States. The representative, who has not been named, cited Omar’s past controversial statements and actions as reasons for her removal from the country.

Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration and has been the target of numerous attacks from conservative politicians and media outlets. The Texas Republican’s call for her deportation has sparked outrage from many who see it as a blatant attempt to silence a prominent Muslim woman of color.

Critics of the Texas Republican’s statement argue that it is a dangerous and xenophobic move that goes against the principles of free speech and democracy. They point out that Omar is a naturalized citizen of the United States and has the right to express her opinions, even if they are unpopular.

The controversy surrounding this call for deportation is likely to continue as the political divide in the country deepens. It serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for tolerance and acceptance in American society.

  • Carlos Alcaraz tries for his first indoor title, Elena Rybakina pushes restart, and a U.S. field dominates in Texas

Elena Rybakina pushes restart, this time without Goran Ivanisevic

The early days of January looked a new dawn for Rybakina. She had hired a new and experienced coach in Goran Ivanisevic, and, just as importantly, seemed to have parted ways with her old coach, Stefano Vukov, who has been provisionally suspended from the WTA Tour after allegations of abuse.

But any thoughts of a fresh start faded quickly, when she asked Vukov to join her in Australia. Soon Goran was gone, and Rybakina was knocked out of the year’s first Slam by eventual champ Madison Keys.

Read more: From rollercoaster to soap opera: Elena Rybakina’s coaching woes leave her hanging

This week, she’ll make her return, coach-free, at the Abu Dhabi Open, the first event of February’s sandy swing through the Saudi peninsula. Rybkina is the top seed, followed by Paula Badosa and Daria Kasatkina. Badosa’s semifinal in Melbourne makes her a player to watch again.

Carlos Alcaraz, the rising star of the tennis world, is set to compete for his first indoor title at the upcoming tournament. The young Spaniard has been making waves on the ATP tour with his impressive performances and is eager to add another trophy to his collection.

Meanwhile, Elena Rybakina is looking to push the restart button on her season after a string of disappointing results. The Kazakh player has shown flashes of brilliance in the past and will be hoping to find her form once again as she gears up for the upcoming matches.

  • S. Carolina Gamecocks vs. Texas A&M Aggies: How to watch NCAA Basketball online, TV channel, live stream info, start time

    Halftime Report

Texas A&M is on the road but looking no worse for wear. They have jumped out to a quick 44-36 lead against S. Carolina.

Texas A&M came into the matchup with some extra motivation after the defeat they were dealt the last time these two teams faced off. We’ll see if they’re able to flip the script or if it’ll just be more of the same.

    Who’s Playing

    Texas A&M Aggies @ S. Carolina Gamecocks

    Current Records: Texas A&M 16-5, S. Carolina 10-11

    How To Watch

    What to Know

Texas A&M is 2-8 against S. Carolina since January of 2017 but they’ll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. Both will face off in an SEC battle at 8:30 p.m. ET at Colonial Life Arena. Despite being away, the Aggies are looking at a 5.5-point advantage in the spread.

Last Tuesday, Texas A&M earned a 75-68 win over Oklahoma.

Texas A&M’s victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Henry Coleman III, who posted 14 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Coleman III had some trouble finding his footing against Texas on Saturday, so this was a step in the right direction. The team also got some help courtesy of Andersson Garcia, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 12 rebounds.

Texas A&M smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds (they’re ranked first in offensive rebounds per game overall). That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they’ve now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in 33 consecutive matches dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, S. Carolina’s recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their eighth straight defeat. They fell 71-60 to Georgia.

The losing side was boosted by Collin Murray-Boyles, who went 7 for 11 en route to 18 points plus five assists and five rebounds. He is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he’s now posted two or more in the last three games he’s played. Jamarii Thomas was another key player, posting 19 points in addition to two steals.

Texas A&M’s win bumped their record up to 16-5. As for S. Carolina, they now have a losing record at 10-11.

Texas A&M couldn’t quite finish off S. Carolina in their previous meeting back in February of 2024 and fell 70-68. Can Texas A&M avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We’ll find out soon enough.

    Odds

Texas A&M is a solid 5.5-point favorite against S. Carolina, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Aggies as a 6.5-point favorite.

    The over/under is 133 points.

  • South Carolina vs. Texas A&M: Three things to watch for, scouting the opponent and injury report

South Carolina basketball is set to face its eighth ranked opponent of the year, and it is still looking for its first conference win. After a quick road trip to Athens, the Gamecocks are back in Columbia for a home game.

The Gamecocks (10-11, 0-8 SEC) will face No. 13 Texas A&M at Colonial Life Arena on Saturday night. Tip-off is at 8:30 p.m. on SEC Network.

Here are three things to watch for, an opponent scouting report on the Aggies, plus the latest injury report.

Getting on the boards and getting on the board

Rebounding is a strength for Texas A&M, as they are third in the SEC with an average of 42.0 RPG. The Gamecocks aren’t bad, at a 36.0 RPG clip, but that’s closer to 16th in the SEC than it is to the Aggies’ mark. The Aggies crash the offensive glass in particular. Their mark of 16.7 offensive rebounds is tops in the nation, and they have three players averaging over 2.5 offensive rebounds per game.

Collin Murray-Boyles and Nick Pringle both have a defensive rebounding percentage over 20.0%, which bodes well for a potential negation of the Aggies’ rebounding prowess. That is, if they can stay out of foul trouble. Texas A&M is one of just three SEC teams attempting more free throws per game than South Carolina.

Getting off to a quick start is paramount. In all three of South Carolina’s wins over Power Five competition, the Gamecocks had a 10-point lead at some point in the first half (Fun fact: South Carolina has more ACC wins than NC State, Boston College, and Miami).

[Join GamecockCentral: $1 for 7 days]

Home field advantage could play a factor in the end result

Despite an 0-8 record in SEC games, the Gamecocks have been competitive at Colonial Life Arena. In their past three SEC home games, they’ve been outscored by just nine total points. All three of those close losses happened to come against ranked teams, as well.

Entering Friday night, the Gamecocks are listed as just +5.5 point underdogs. Despite a 1-5 road record, they are 8-5 at home this season. Additionally, several Gamecocks are more efficient at home than on the road.

Murray-Boyles’s turnover percentage drops from 29.4% on the road to 13.4% at Colonial Life. Jacobi Wright’s 3PT% rises from 25.0% to 37.0%. Zachary Davis’s steal percentage almost doubles from road games (1.5%) to home games (2.9%). Morris Ugusuk is an exception, with a TS% of 76.1% on the road and 44.0% at home. Here’s to hoping he scores 25 points at Rupp against Kentucky.

In front of a crowd likely eager to see the Gamecocks record victory numero uno against the Aggies, South Carolina could use a friendly environment to its advantage.

Keeping control of the ball is a must

South Carolina basketball’s Achilles heel, if an observer had to pick just one, has been turnovers. The Gamecocks offense has given away opportunities at a high rate ever since the close loss to Auburn. Despite a season-long average of 13.1 turnovers per game, South Carolina is averaging 18.6 per game in their past five contests. Is that bad? If it was extrapolated over the course of the season, it would rank dead last out of 364 D-I basketball teams.

South Carolina’s shooting clips over that span aren’t too far off from their season average. But because of the dearth of opportunities provided by volatile ball-handling, the Gamecocks aren’t getting the same number of shots off. After averaging 75.6 PPG in non-conference games, that mark is down to 62.8 PPG against SEC competition.

If this team can take care of the basketball, the offense has a chance to get into a rhythm and make shots. But if the turnover woes continue, there’s no way for the Gamecocks to achieve their offensive goals.

The highly anticipated matchup between South Carolina and Texas A&M is just around the corner, and fans are eagerly awaiting the showdown between these two powerhouse teams. As both teams gear up for battle, here are three key things to watch for in the upcoming game:

    1. Quarterback battle: South Carolina’s quarterback, Luke Doty, has been impressive so far this season, showcasing his dual-threat ability and playmaking skills. On the other side, Texas A&M’s quarterback, Zach Calzada, has also shown flashes of brilliance and has the potential to lead his team to victory. The matchup between these two signal-callers will be crucial in determining the outcome of the game.

    2. Defensive showdown: Both South Carolina and Texas A&M boast strong defensive units that have been able to shut down opposing offenses. The Gamecocks have been particularly stout against the run, while the Aggies have been effective at generating pressure on the quarterback. It will be interesting to see how these defenses match up against each other and which unit will come out on top.

    3. Special teams impact: Special teams can often be the X-factor in close games, and both South Carolina and Texas A&M have shown the ability to make game-changing plays on special teams. Whether it’s a big return, a clutch field goal, or a momentum-shifting blocked punt, special teams could play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the game.

    Scouting the opponent:

Texas A&M comes into this game with a strong 4-1 record, with their only loss coming against the top-ranked team in the country. The Aggies have a balanced offensive attack led by quarterback Zach Calzada and running back Isaiah Spiller, and their defense has been formidable, allowing just 19.4 points per game. South Carolina will need to be prepared for a physical, hard-fought battle against a talented Texas A&M team.

    Injury report:

South Carolina and Texas A&M have both been dealing with injuries throughout the season, and the status of key players will be a factor to watch leading up to the game. Both teams will need to have their depth tested and be ready to adjust if key players are unable to suit up. Keep an eye on the injury reports in the days leading up to the game to see who will be available for this crucial matchup.

Overall, the South Carolina vs. Texas A&M game promises to be an exciting and closely contested battle between two talented teams. Keep an eye on the quarterback battle, defensive showdown, and special teams impact, as well as the injury reports for both teams, to see how the game unfolds.

Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college basketball odds around the Texas Tech vs. Houston odds, and make our expert college basketball picks and predictions.

The Red Raiders have won 5 in a row, while covering 3 of the past 4 outings. That includes a 71-57 win as an 11.5-point favorite over TCU last time out Wednesday. The Under has cashed in 4 of the previous 5 outings.

Texas Tech at Houston picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Houston 66, Texas Tech 61

    Moneyline

Houston (-650) will set you back 6 1/2 times your potential return, and that’s way too much risk for a standalone bet or as part of a multi-leg parlay. The Cougars have won 13 in a row, but this is way too much risk in a battle between ranked opponents.

    PASS.

    Against the spread

TEXAS TECH +10.5 (-110) is a solid play catching double digits against Houston -10.5 (-110). While the Cougars have covered each of the past 3 games, as a double-digit favorite UH is just 1-2 ATS in the past 3 tries, while going 6-6 ATS in the past 12 attempts.

For the Red Raiders, they’re 3-1 ATS in the past 4 outings. As an underdog, Texas Tech has won and covered the only previous instance at BYU Jan. 7, winning 72-67.

    Over/Under

UNDER 127.5 (-115) is the lean, but this is a super-low number, so be careful.

The Under is 4-1 in the past 5 games for both of these teams. At home, the Under has cashed in each of the past 3 home games for Houston. The Under has hit in 2 of the past 3 road contests for Texas Tech, too.

Texas Tech at Houston Odds, Picks and Predictions

The Texas Tech Red Raiders will be facing off against the Houston Cougars in what is sure to be an exciting college football matchup. Both teams are coming off strong performances in their previous games, and this showdown is shaping up to be a close one.

The odds currently have Texas Tech as the slight favorite, with a spread of -3.5 points. However, Houston is a strong team and has the home-field advantage, so this game could easily go either way.

When it comes to picks and predictions, it’s a tough call. Texas Tech has a powerful offense led by quarterback Tyler Shough, who has been putting up big numbers so far this season. On the other hand, Houston’s defense has been stout, and they have the ability to shut down high-powered offenses.

In the end, I believe this game will come down to the wire, with both teams trading blows back and forth. However, I’m leaning towards Texas Tech pulling out a close victory in this one. Look for Shough to make some big plays down the stretch and lead the Red Raiders to a hard-fought win.

Final prediction: Texas Tech 31, Houston 28.

Texas Tech entered the contest having won five straight and they’re just one half away from another. Will they make it six, or will Houston step up and spoil it? We’ll know soon.

    What to Know

Houston is on a 28-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Texas Tech is on a six-game streak of away wins (also dating back to last season): one of those streaks is about to end. Both will face off in a Big 12 battle at 6:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at Fertitta Center. The Cougars are strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 76 points per game this season.

Houston is headed into this one after the oddsmakers set last week’s over/under low at 124.5, but even that wound up being too high. They came out on top against West Virginia by a score of 63-49 on Wednesday.

Houston’s win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from L.J. Cryer, who earned 17 points. Cryer had some trouble finding his footing against Kansas on Saturday, so this was a step in the right direction.

Meanwhile, Texas Tech earned a 71-57 win over TCU on Wednesday.

Texas Tech can attribute much of their success to JT Toppin, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 14 rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Toppin a new career-high in assists (three). Another player making a difference was Chance McMillian, who had 16 points.

Houston is on a roll lately: they’ve won 14 of their last 15 games, which provided a nice bump to their 17-3 record this season. As for Texas Tech, their victory bumped their record up to 16-4.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as the two teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Houston hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 76 points per game. However, it’s not like Texas Tech struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 81.4. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

As for their next game, Houston is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 10.5 points. For those looking to play the spread, take note: they are a solid 11-7 against the spread when expected to win.

    Odds

Houston is a big 10.5-point favorite against Texas Tech, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 10.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

    The over/under is 128.5 points.

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders vs Houston Cougars Prediction, Odds and Picks

The Houston Cougars will put their 9-0 conference record on the line when they host the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday. Houston has been the class of the Big 12 thus far, and their recent road wins over Kansas and West Virginia further prove that. As for Texas Tech, they are currently 7-2 league play with recent wins at home over Oklahoma State and TCU. An upset win for the Red Raiders would tighten up the Big 12 regular season title race, and they may have a good chance to accomplish that in this matchup with the Cougars.

Houston is coming off 2 huge road wins, including a miraculous overtime win at Allen Fieldhouse against Kansas, so you could consider this to be a let down spot for the Cougars. The injury report is also important to monitor in this contest, as Emmanuel Sharp has been dealing with an ankle injury and was limited to 3 points in just 18 minutes in their last game vs West Virginia. Sharp is key for this Cougars team that lacks perimeter scoring depth outside of LJ Cryer, so consider this a big loss if he is either limited again or is unable to play in this contest.

Houston’s defense is #1 in adjusted efficiency, per KenPom, but Texas Tech’s offense may have one of the better setups to succeed against it. There are 3 important qualities for teams to have in order to generate offensive success against the Cougars, and those are ball security, 3-point shooting, and offensive rebounding. The Red Raiders grade out well in all 3 categories, as they are 80th nationally in turnover rate, 23rd in 3-point shooting percentage, and 22nd on the offensive glass. The spacing the Red Raiders have is especially important in this matchup against the Cougars’ rim denial defense, and forcing the Cougars’ bigs to guard on the perimeter can potentially break down Kelvin Sampson’s defense to an extent.

Texas Tech is dealing with an injury of their own, as Darrion Williams is questionable for this contest after missing last game vs TCU. While he is an important player for the Red Raiders in the long term, his loss may not be felt as much in this contest. Coach Grant McCasland has elected to use a 2 big man lineup during Williams’ absence, and this should help the Red Raiders significantly on the defensive glass. Houston is one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country, but Texas Tech’s frontcourt combo of JT Toppin and Federiko Federiko has a great chance at limiting the Cougars in that area.

While it is scary to bet against Houston, that is exactly what we are going to do here with Texas Tech as a 9.5 point underdog. The favorable matchup the Red Raiders may have along with this potentially being a letdown spot for the Cougars is too much to ignore. If the Red Raiders get hot from 3-point range, they have potential to pull off the road upset, but my official pick will be taking the points.

Texas Tech vs Houston prediction: Texas Tech +9.5 (-110) at time of publishing, playable at that number

The highly anticipated matchup between the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Houston Cougars is set to take place this weekend, and fans are buzzing with excitement. Both teams have had strong showings so far this season, making this game a must-watch for college football fans.

The Red Raiders are coming off a big win against FIU, showcasing their explosive offense led by quarterback Tyler Shough. On the other side, the Cougars have been impressive as well, with a dominant defense and a balanced offensive attack.

In terms of odds, the Red Raiders are currently favored to win by a narrow margin, but the Cougars are not to be underestimated. This game could truly go either way, making it a tough one to predict.

As for picks, it’s a tough call, but I believe the Red Raiders will come out on top in a close and hard-fought battle. Their offense has been firing on all cylinders, and I think they will be able to outscore the Cougars in the end.

Overall, this matchup promises to be a thrilling one, with two talented teams battling it out for supremacy. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as the Texas Tech Red Raiders take on the Houston Cougars.

  • Matthew McConaughey leads campaign to bring more movies to Texas

“Texas stories deserve a Texas backdrop. That’s why I teamed up with Dennis Quaid, Woody Harrelson, Billy Bob Thornton, and Renée Zellweger for True to Texas.”

HOUSTON — Matthew McConaughey has teamed up with other actors with Texas ties in a campaign to bring more films and television shows to the Lone Star State.

Last week, the Texas Senate announced its budget includes $498 million to revamp the Texas Film Inventive.

Now, McConaughey and friends are urging the Texas Legislature to pass the budget a campaign called “True to Texas.” It includes a four-minute video featuring McConaughey and Woody Harrelson reprising their “True Detective” roles on a road trip to Texas. Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton and Renée Zellweger also appear.

“You have to wonder if this industry of ours is just chasing its own tail,” Harrelson, who was born in Midland and went to school in Houston, says as he drives down a highway with McConaughey riding shotgun.

“No, I don’t wonder. Restrictions. Regulations. Nickle and diming productions. Political lectures,” McConaughey replies. “Hollywood, it’s a flat circle, ‘Wood,’ round and round like a record with the sound off.”

McConaughey, who was born in Uvalde and graduated from the University of Texas, said he’s ready to “change the tune” by turning Texas into a new hub for film and television.

The actors want the legislature to pass a bill that would add bigger and better incentives for the film industry, which they say would create thousands of Texas jobs and boost local economies.

“A small fraction of the Texas budget surplus could turn this state into the new Hollywood,” Harrelson says.

“But we’re not gonna call it Hollywood,” quipped Quaid, a Bellaire native, from the backseat.

Then they get a call from Thornton, who was born in Arkansas but has lived in Texas, followed by Zellweger, who’s from Katy.

“Count me in, I’ve been hotel hopping in all these other states for way too long,” Zellweger says.

The actors point out that Texas is bigger than most countries with a larger variety of locations than any other state.

“We’ve got desserts, oceans, we’ve got forests, we’ve got rolling hills,” Quaid says.

He and other stars testified at a 2024 legislative hearing in Austin that featured clips of television shows filmed in Texas, including “Yellowstone” and “Friday Night Lights.”

They pointed out that Texas is losing millions of dollars to other states that offer better incentives for the industry.

“One of my great frustrations was that I wrote ‘Hell or High Water,’ and they filmed the darn thing in New Mexico,” “Yellowstone” writer and producer Taylor Sheridan testified last October. “My love story to Texas was shot west of where it should have been shot.”

A 17-year old program created under former Gov. Rick Perry attracts television, film, commercial, and video game production to Texas by offering grants, including the cost of hiring Texas workers and renting film space. Movie and television projects filmed in Texas receive a 5 to 20% rebate — but only until the program runs out of money each budget cycle.

The True to Texas campaign wants the program overhauled to make it more competitive with other states.

“So what do you say, Texas Legislature? You don’t like what Hollywood’s been dishin’? Let’s take over the kitchen,” McConaughey says at the end of his video.

Matthew McConaughey, the beloved actor and Texas native, is stepping up to lead a campaign to bring more film productions to the Lone Star State. With his signature charm and passion for his home state, McConaughey is rallying support to showcase Texas as a prime destination for filmmakers.

In recent years, Texas has played host to a number of successful film and television productions, including “Dallas Buyers Club,” “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” and “Friday Night Lights.” However, McConaughey believes that there is even more potential for growth in the state’s film industry.

By highlighting Texas’s diverse landscapes, talented workforce, and welcoming communities, McConaughey hopes to attract more filmmakers and production companies to bring their projects to Texas. Not only will this campaign create more job opportunities for local residents, but it will also shine a spotlight on the unique culture and beauty of Texas.

As a proud Texan, Matthew McConaughey is determined to make his state a top destination for filmmakers and to help boost the local economy through the power of film. With his star power and infectious enthusiasm, there’s no doubt that he will succeed in his mission to bring more movies to Texas.
