No. 3 Texas gets comeback win over No. 5 LSU, marking third top-10 win this week

A week after dispatching then-No. 2 South Carolina, No. 3 Texas felled the other top team in the SEC on Sunday, defeating No. 5 LSU 65-58.

After being down for nearly the whole game, the Longhorns scraped back and held on for a hard-earned comeback victory.

After an evenly matched first quarter, LSU pulled away, outscoring Texas 18-9 in the second quarter. The Longhorns cut into that lead in the third quarter, but the Tigers pulled away again, going up by as many as 12 points. Texas didn’t quit, pushing past the Tigers during the final frame.

Halfway through the fourth quarter, the Longhorns took their first lead of the game after freshman guard Bryanna Preston got a steal and a layup to make it 50-49.

The final minutes saw a push-and-pull between the SEC squads, with Texas extending its lead and LSU quickly cutting into it. But the Tigers couldn’t break past the Longhorns, who — buoyed by a jubilant home crowd — outscored LSU 21-9 in the final quarter. The Tigers also had five fourth-quarter turnovers, all of them costly.

LSU’s Mikaylah Williams scored a game-high 18 points, including several key shots in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t carry her team over the finish line. Tigers forward Aneesah Morrow had a big game as well, putting up 15 points and 20 rebounds, plus three steals, and Flau’jae Johnson pitched in 16 points as well.

Texas star Madison Booker led the Longhorns with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Two other starters, forward Taylor Jones and guard Rori Harmon, put up double-digit points, but it was the depth of Texas’ bench — with seven points each from Preston and Jordan Lee — that gave the Longhorns the victory.

Sunday’s win marks Texas’ third victory over a top-10 team this week. The Longhorns ended South Carolina’s SEC win streak with a 66-62 win last Sunday and easily dispatched No. 8 Kentucky on Thursday. Sunday was also Texas’ 10th straight win.

Compared to the past few weeks, the rest of the Longhorns’ regular season will be much simpler. They will finish the season with three unranked opponents: Georgia, Mississippi State and Florida.

In a thrilling showdown between two college baseball powerhouses, No. 3 Texas staged a remarkable comeback to defeat No. 5 LSU in a nail-biting game. The Longhorns’ victory secured their third top-10 win of the week, solidifying their status as a force to be reckoned with in the NCAA.

The game started off with LSU taking an early lead, but Texas fought back with a strong offensive performance and solid pitching to eventually secure the win. The Longhorns’ resilience and determination were on full display as they battled back from a deficit to emerge victorious.

With this impressive win, Texas is proving that they are a team to watch this season. Their ability to compete and defeat some of the top teams in the country is a testament to their talent and skill. The Longhorns are undoubtedly a team on the rise, and their success against top-ranked opponents only further solidifies their place as a contender for the national championship.

Congratulations to No. 3 Texas on their thrilling comeback win over No. 5 LSU, marking their third top-10 victory of the week. This is a team that is not to be underestimated, and they are certainly making a statement with their impressive performance on the field. Keep an eye on the Longhorns as they continue their quest for greatness in the NCAA baseball season.

Two national title contenders take the national stage on Sunday afternoon. Texas is surging after dealing mighty South Carolina its first SEC loss in 57 games. LSU is 25-1 with its electric big three, one of which is an R&B star with a new album out Friday. This should be one of the most fascinating games of the regular season.

Kim Mulkey’s Tigers penetrate the lane and dominate the boards. Flau’Jae Johnson is the headliner, averaging almost 20 points per game in her junior year, but senior center Aneesah Morrow is going to be a first-round pick in the forthcoming WNBA Draft. She is a high-energy double-double machine with ruthless defensive instincts and boundless hustle. The third star in the trio, sophomore Mikaylah Williams, has been feeling it from behind the arc. She distills momentum and turns up the heat:

Texas at home is as one of the hardest outs in the world women’s basketball. Vic Schaefer coaches a mature and discplined Longhorns group. Seniors Taylor Jones and Rori Harmon are excellent on the defensive end, and junior Kyla Oldacre is a quick, efficient bucket off the bench. But it all starts with All-American Madison Booker. She was valiant against the defending champs:

The Longhorns like to play inside, and they’ve been carving out second-chance baskets in their inaugural SEC run. LSU gets to the rim and lead the nation in offensive rebounds. It’s strength on strength for Sunday night.

Texas is tied with South Carolina atop the conference at 11-1. LSU is a half-step behind them at 10-1. The winner of the game snags temporary pole positioning in this crowded SEC.

  • Texas confirms growing measles outbreak affecting school-aged children

Officials at the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) warn there is a growing measles outbreak involving school-aged children.

The report said that 10 cases have been identified in Gaines County and eight of the cases are school-aged children, of which two are under the age of 5.

All were unvaccinated cases, said officials.

“Due to the highly contagious nature of this disease, additional cases are likely to occur in Gaines County and the surrounding communities,” the alert said.

Seven of the cases have been hospitalized, according to the Texas DSHS.

The rise in cases comes more than two decades after measles was reported eliminated by health agencies in 2000.

This week’s alert went on to advise that additional cases are likely to occur soon.

US MEASLES CASES ARE UP IN 2024. WHAT’S DRIVING THE INCREASE?

“Due to the highly contagious nature of this disease, additional cases are likely to occur in Gaines County and the surrounding communities,” they said.

Officials urged people to immediately report any suspected cases to their local health department with the infected person in their presence.

DSHS said the virus can be transmitted through direct contact with infectious droplets or airborne and spread when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. They also warned that the virus can remain infectious in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area.

Vaccination is the best way for people to avoid infection from measles and other preventable diseases, the advisory said.

“Children too young to be vaccinated are more likely to have severe complications if they get infected with the measles virus,” DSHS said.

In January, the Houston Health Department confirmed two cases of measles, prompting a health alert from the state. They were the first cases in Texas since 2023.

Both cases were unvaccinated adults who had traveled internationally.

In recent news, Texas health officials have confirmed a growing measles outbreak that is affecting school-aged children. The outbreak has been linked to unvaccinated individuals and is causing concern among parents and educators.

Measles is a highly contagious virus that can be spread through the air by coughing and sneezing. Symptoms of measles include a high fever, cough, runny nose, and a rash that typically starts on the face and spreads down the body.

Health officials are urging parents to make sure their children are up to date on their measles vaccinations to help prevent the spread of the virus. Vaccination is the best way to protect against measles and other preventable diseases.

Schools in the affected areas are taking precautions to prevent further spread of the virus, including increased cleaning and disinfection measures. Parents are being advised to keep their children home if they are showing any symptoms of measles and to seek medical attention if needed.

It is important for everyone to stay informed about the measles outbreak and to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing situation.

  • Texas Republican Calls for Ilhan Omar To Be Deported

A Texas Republican has called for Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a U.S. citizen, to be deported to her home country of Somalia.

“America would be a better place if @IlhanMN were deported back to Somalia,” Brandon Gill wrote Tuesday on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Newsweek has contacted Omar’s office for comment via email outside of normal office hours.

Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) speaks during a news conference with members of the Congressional Border Security Caucus to introduce the Birthright Citizenship Act at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center on January 23, 2025 in Washington,…

    Why It Matters

President Donald Trump has begun enacting his aggressive deportation program.

Immigration and mass deportations were a key element of Trump’s 2024 campaign and Republicans sweeping to power on a national level.

Americans support the need for immigration reform but disagree about how deportation policies should be carried out.

A poll by The New York Times and Ipsos conducted from January 2 to 10 found that 55 percent of voters strongly or somewhat supported such plans. Eighty-eight percent supported “deporting immigrants who are here illegally and have criminal records.”

    What To Know

Gill, a first-term representative for Texas’s 26th Congressional District, was reacting to a video shared on X on Tuesday, featuring a recent interview between the Minnesota Democrat and a reporter.

About half an hour later, in a separate post, Gill said on X, “We should have never let Ilhan Omar into our country.”

Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, arrived in the U.S. as a refugee in 1995 and became a naturalized citizen in 2000 at the age of 17.

In the video, Omar, the first Somali American congresswoman, explained what undocumented Somalis, or those whose documentation may have expired, should do if questioned by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.

“You are not obligated to answer their questions. Just state that your are advised by a lawyer not to answer questions,” Omar told the reporter. “Disclosure of your name, immigration status, and the mode of entry is not mandatory. Learn the laws and prepare yourself and refrain from disclosing information that you prefer them not to know.”

Omar is embroiled in a war of words with tech billionaire Elon Musk over the legal advice she was offering to undocumented immigrants if they encounter ICE agents.

Last year, a misinterpreted clip of Omar’s speech in Somali sparked intense criticism from conservatives, leading to calls for her deportation. In response, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene introduced a motion to censure Omar, later stating to reporters, “I would love to expel her; I think she should be deported, I honestly do,” over the incorrect translation.

    What People Are Saying

A spokesperson for Brandon Gill said in a statement, “Representative Omar’s conduct raises questions about to whom she is most loyal—the American people or illegal aliens from Somalia. Representative Gill simply stated that it is disgraceful for a sitting Congresswoman and U.S. citizen to facilitate the invasion of our country by illegal alien Somalis.”

Elon Musk said in a post, X: “She is breaking the law. Literally. Outright.”

In response, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar said on X: “Hey Elon Every single person in this country deserves to know their rights. That’s legal. Maybe you should brush up on our laws given the fact you’re breaking them to steal American’s sensitive data. PS. This video is manipulated, and I wasn’t even at the event shown.”

“It just shows you how much he lacks an understanding of what the laws of the country are,” Omar said on Tuesday on CNN News Central when asked about Musk’s post.

    What Happens Next

The dispute highlights the deep divisions in U.S. politics over immigration, as Republicans look to enact Trump’s hardline immigration agenda while progressives regroup and plot to oppose his agenda.

In a recent controversial statement, a Texas Republican has called for Congresswoman Ilhan Omar to be deported from the United States. The representative, who has not been named, cited Omar’s past controversial statements and actions as reasons for her removal from the country.

Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration and has been the target of numerous attacks from conservative politicians and media outlets. The Texas Republican’s call for her deportation has sparked outrage from many who see it as a blatant attempt to silence a prominent Muslim woman of color.

Critics of the Texas Republican’s statement argue that it is a dangerous and xenophobic move that goes against the principles of free speech and democracy. They point out that Omar is a naturalized citizen of the United States and has the right to express her opinions, even if they are unpopular.

The controversy surrounding this call for deportation is likely to continue as the political divide in the country deepens. It serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for tolerance and acceptance in American society.

Elena Rybakina pushes restart, this time without Goran Ivanisevic

The early days of January looked a new dawn for Rybakina. She had hired a new and experienced coach in Goran Ivanisevic, and, just as importantly, seemed to have parted ways with her old coach, Stefano Vukov, who has been provisionally suspended from the WTA Tour after allegations of abuse.

  • S. Carolina Gamecocks vs. Texas A&M Aggies: How to watch NCAA Basketball online, TV channel, live stream info, start time

    Halftime Report

Texas A&M is on the road but looking no worse for wear. They have jumped out to a quick 44-36 lead against S. Carolina.

Texas A&M came into the matchup with some extra motivation after the defeat they were dealt the last time these two teams faced off. We’ll see if they’re able to flip the script or if it’ll just be more of the same.

    Who’s Playing

    Texas A&M Aggies @ S. Carolina Gamecocks

    Current Records: Texas A&M 16-5, S. Carolina 10-11

    How To Watch

    What to Know

Texas A&M is 2-8 against S. Carolina since January of 2017 but they’ll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. Both will face off in an SEC battle at 8:30 p.m. ET at Colonial Life Arena. Despite being away, the Aggies are looking at a 5.5-point advantage in the spread.

Last Tuesday, Texas A&M earned a 75-68 win over Oklahoma.

Texas A&M’s victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Henry Coleman III, who posted 14 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Coleman III had some trouble finding his footing against Texas on Saturday, so this was a step in the right direction. The team also got some help courtesy of Andersson Garcia, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 12 rebounds.

Texas A&M smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds (they’re ranked first in offensive rebounds per game overall). That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they’ve now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in 33 consecutive matches dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, S. Carolina’s recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their eighth straight defeat. They fell 71-60 to Georgia.

The losing side was boosted by Collin Murray-Boyles, who went 7 for 11 en route to 18 points plus five assists and five rebounds. He is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he’s now posted two or more in the last three games he’s played. Jamarii Thomas was another key player, posting 19 points in addition to two steals.

Texas A&M’s win bumped their record up to 16-5. As for S. Carolina, they now have a losing record at 10-11.

Texas A&M couldn’t quite finish off S. Carolina in their previous meeting back in February of 2024 and fell 70-68. Can Texas A&M avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We’ll find out soon enough.

    Odds

Texas A&M is a solid 5.5-point favorite against S. Carolina, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Aggies as a 6.5-point favorite.

    The over/under is 133 points.

  • South Carolina vs. Texas A&M: Three things to watch for, scouting the opponent and injury report

South Carolina basketball is set to face its eighth ranked opponent of the year, and it is still looking for its first conference win. After a quick road trip to Athens, the Gamecocks are back in Columbia for a home game.

The Gamecocks (10-11, 0-8 SEC) will face No. 13 Texas A&M at Colonial Life Arena on Saturday night. Tip-off is at 8:30 p.m. on SEC Network.

Here are three things to watch for, an opponent scouting report on the Aggies, plus the latest injury report.

Getting on the boards and getting on the board

Rebounding is a strength for Texas A&M, as they are third in the SEC with an average of 42.0 RPG. The Gamecocks aren’t bad, at a 36.0 RPG clip, but that’s closer to 16th in the SEC than it is to the Aggies’ mark. The Aggies crash the offensive glass in particular. Their mark of 16.7 offensive rebounds is tops in the nation, and they have three players averaging over 2.5 offensive rebounds per game.

Collin Murray-Boyles and Nick Pringle both have a defensive rebounding percentage over 20.0%, which bodes well for a potential negation of the Aggies’ rebounding prowess. That is, if they can stay out of foul trouble. Texas A&M is one of just three SEC teams attempting more free throws per game than South Carolina.

Getting off to a quick start is paramount. In all three of South Carolina’s wins over Power Five competition, the Gamecocks had a 10-point lead at some point in the first half (Fun fact: South Carolina has more ACC wins than NC State, Boston College, and Miami).

Home field advantage could play a factor in the end result

Despite an 0-8 record in SEC games, the Gamecocks have been competitive at Colonial Life Arena. In their past three SEC home games, they’ve been outscored by just nine total points. All three of those close losses happened to come against ranked teams, as well.

Entering Friday night, the Gamecocks are listed as just +5.5 point underdogs. Despite a 1-5 road record, they are 8-5 at home this season. Additionally, several Gamecocks are more efficient at home than on the road.

Murray-Boyles’s turnover percentage drops from 29.4% on the road to 13.4% at Colonial Life. Jacobi Wright’s 3PT% rises from 25.0% to 37.0%. Zachary Davis’s steal percentage almost doubles from road games (1.5%) to home games (2.9%). Morris Ugusuk is an exception, with a TS% of 76.1% on the road and 44.0% at home. Here’s to hoping he scores 25 points at Rupp against Kentucky.

In front of a crowd likely eager to see the Gamecocks record victory numero uno against the Aggies, South Carolina could use a friendly environment to its advantage.

Keeping control of the ball is a must

South Carolina basketball’s Achilles heel, if an observer had to pick just one, has been turnovers. The Gamecocks offense has given away opportunities at a high rate ever since the close loss to Auburn. Despite a season-long average of 13.1 turnovers per game, South Carolina is averaging 18.6 per game in their past five contests. Is that bad? If it was extrapolated over the course of the season, it would rank dead last out of 364 D-I basketball teams.

South Carolina’s shooting clips over that span aren’t too far off from their season average. But because of the dearth of opportunities provided by volatile ball-handling, the Gamecocks aren’t getting the same number of shots off. After averaging 75.6 PPG in non-conference games, that mark is down to 62.8 PPG against SEC competition.

If this team can take care of the basketball, the offense has a chance to get into a rhythm and make shots. But if the turnover woes continue, there’s no way for the Gamecocks to achieve their offensive goals.

    2. Defensive showdown: Both South Carolina and Texas A&M boast strong defensive units that have been able to shut down opposing offenses. Scouting the opponent:

Texas A&M comes into this game with a strong 4-1 record, with their only loss coming against the top-ranked team in the country. The Aggies have a balanced offensive attack led by quarterback Zach Calzada and running back Isaiah Spiller, and their defense has been formidable, allowing just 19.4 points per game. South Carolina will need to be prepared for a physical, hard-fought battle against a talented Texas A&M team.

    Injury report:

South Carolina and Texas A&M have both been dealing with injuries throughout the season, and the status of key players will be a factor to watch leading up to the game. Both teams will need to have their depth tested and be ready to adjust if key players are unable to suit up.
