US Supreme Court’s Thomas will not be referred to Justice Department
By Nate Raymond
(Reuters) -A judicial policymaking body on Thursday rejected a request by Democratic lawmakers to refer conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to the Department of Justice to examine claims that he failed to disclose gifts and travel provided by a wealthy benefactor.
The secretary to the U.S. Judicial Conference, the federal judiciary’s top policymaking body, in a pair of letters cited amendments Thomas had made to his annual financial disclosure reports that addressed several issues raised by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Representative Hank Johnson.

The conference also in a separate letter rejected a conservative group’s request to similarly refer liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Justice Department based on omissions in her own disclosure reports.
Jackson has since amended her reports, the letter noted. The letter was addressed to the Center for Renewing America’s president, Russell Vought, Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to lead the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.
In a statement, Whitehouse criticized the judicial branch’s response to his request concerning Thomas, saying it was “shirking its statutory duty to hold a Supreme Court justice accountable for ethics violations.”
The justices and the Center did not respond to requests for comment.
The Democratic lawmakers had made their request concerning Thomas, a member of the Supreme Court’s 6-3 conservative majority, in an April 2023 letter following reports by ProPublica and others that he had not reported gifts including luxury travel from wealthy Texas businessman Harlan Crow.
Their letter argued that a referral to the Justice Department was warranted on the grounds that Thomas had willfully failed to comply with the financial disclosure requirements of the Ethics in Government Act of 1978.
Thomas has said he had been advised he did not have to report that type of “personal hospitality” and promised to do so in the future starting with his 2022 annual report, which was filed in August 2023.
U.S. District Judge Robert Conrad, who heads the judiciary’s administrative arm and acts as the Judicial Conference’s secretary, wrote that the judiciary had been busy since 2023 updating its financial disclosure requirements and making clear when the personal hospitality exemption does not apply.
He said Thomas had filed amended financial disclosure reports since the issues first emerged and that he had agreed to follow the relevant guidance issued to other federal judges, including the new policies.
“We have no reason to believe he has done anything less,” Conrad wrote.
In declining to make a referral to the Justice Department, Conrad cited “constitutional questions” about whether the Judicial Conference could do so that require further study.
He also said the lawmakers’ request was mooted when Whitehouse and another senator wrote directly to Attorney General Merrick Garland asking him to appoint a special counsel to investigate the same matters.

Federal courts won’t refer Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to attorney general over ethics
WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal courts will not refer allegations that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas may have violated ethics laws to the Justice Department, the judiciary’s policymaking body said Thursday.
Thomas has agreed to follow updated requirements on reporting trips and gifts, including clearer guidelines on hospitality from friends, the U.S. Judicial Conference wrote to Democratic senators who had called for an investigation into undisclosed acceptance of luxury trips.
Thomas has previously said he wasn’t required to disclose the many trips he and his wife took that were paid for by wealthy benefactors like Republican megadonor Harlan Crow because they are close personal friends. The court didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.
The Supreme Court adopted its first code of ethics in 2023 in the face of sustained criticism, though the new code still lacks a means of enforcement.
It’s unclear whether the law allows the U.S. Judicial Conference to make a criminal referral regarding a Supreme Court justice, U.S. District Judge Robert Conrad wrote. He serves as secretary for the conference, which sets policy for the federal court system and is led by Chief Justice John Roberts.
A referral in this case isn’t necessary, Conrad said, because two Democratic senators called on Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel over the summer. No such appointment has been publicly made.
The group Fix the Court said the financial disclosure law is clear and should apply to justices. “The Conference’s letters further underscore the need for Congress to create a new and transparent mechanism to investigate the justices for ethics violations since the Conference is unwilling to act upon the one method we had presumed existed to do that,” Executive Director Gabe Roth said in a statement.
Conrad also sent a similar response to a separate complaint from a conservative legal group, the Center for Renewing America, in regard to Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s reports on the source of her husband’s consulting income. Jackson has since amended her disclosures and also agreed to updated reporting requirements, Conrad wrote.
The Federal courts have decided not to refer Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to the attorney general over ethics concerns. Despite calls for an investigation into Justice Thomas’ potential conflicts of interest and alleged failure to report his wife’s income, the courts have deemed that there is insufficient evidence to warrant further action. This decision comes after years of speculation and controversy surrounding Justice Thomas’ judicial conduct. Critics have accused him of potential bias in cases involving his wife’s political activities and financial interests. However, Justice Thomas has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that he has always acted in accordance with ethical standards.
While some may be disappointed by the courts’ decision not to pursue further action against Justice Thomas, others see it as a validation of his innocence. Regardless of where one stands on the issue, it is clear that the debate over Justice Thomas’ ethics will continue to be a contentious and divisive topic in the legal community.

US judicial body rejects request to refer Clarence Thomas to justice department | Clarence Thomas
A judicial policymaking body on Thursday rejected a request by Democratic lawmakers to refer the conservative US supreme court Justice Clarence Thomas to the Department of Justice to examine claims that he failed to disclose gifts and travel provided by a wealthy benefactor.
The secretary to the US judicial conference, the federal judiciary’s top policymaking body, pointed at amendments Thomas had made to his annual financial disclosure reports for the decision.
In a separate letter, the conference declined to refer liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the justice department based on claims by a conservative group that she failed to disclose the source of her husband’s consulting income. Jackson has since amended her disclosures, that letter noted.
Democratic lawmakers Sheldon Whitehouse, a senator from Rhode Island, and Hank Johnson, a congressman from Georgia, had asked the conference to refer Thomas to the department after reporting from ProPublica in April 2023 revealed that Thomas had not reported being treated to luxury trips by wealthy Texas businessman and Republican donor Harlan Crow.
Their letter argued that a referral to the justice department was warranted because Thomas had willfully failed to comply with the financial disclosure requirements of the Ethics in Government Act of 1978.
Thomas had said he had been advised he did not have to report that type of “personal hospitality” and said he would do so going forward starting with his 2022 annual report, which was filed in August 2023.
Robert Conrad, a US district judge, who heads the judiciary’s administrative arm and acts as the judicial conference’s secretary, wrote that the judiciary had been busy since 2023 updating its financial disclosure requirements and making clear when the personal hospitality exemption does not apply.
He said Thomas had filed amended financial disclosure reports since the issues first emerged and that he has agreed to follow the relevant guidance issued to other federal judges, including the new policies.
“We have no reason to believe he has done anything less,” Conrad wrote.
In declining to make a referral to the justice department, Conrad cited “constitutional questions” about whether the judicial conference could do so that require further study.
He also said the lawmakers’ request was mooted when Whitehouse, with another senator, wrote directly to the attorney general, Merrick Garland, asking him to appoint a special counsel to investigate the same matters.
In a recent decision, the US judicial body has rejected a request to refer Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to the Justice Department for investigation. This decision comes after allegations of misconduct and potential conflicts of interest surrounding Justice Thomas have surfaced in recent months. The request to refer Justice Thomas to the Justice Department was made by a group of legal scholars and ethics experts who raised concerns about his relationship with conservative activist groups and his wife’s involvement in right-wing causes. They argued that Justice Thomas may have violated ethical standards and should be investigated for potential violations.
However, the US judicial body dismissed the request, stating that there was insufficient evidence to warrant further action. The decision has sparked outrage among critics who believe that Justice Thomas should be held accountable for any potential wrongdoing.
Justice Thomas has faced scrutiny in the past for his controversial rulings and close ties to conservative groups. Despite the rejection of the request for investigation, the controversy surrounding Justice Thomas is likely to continue as questions about his impartiality and ethics persist.
Stay tuned for further developments on this story as it continues to unfold.

If there was one positive takeaway from the Nets’ disappointing loss to the Magic on Sunday afternoon, it was the return and sustained health of top scorer Cam Thomas.
Thomas, who had been out since Nov. 25 with a hamstring strain, “felt great” in his first game back in which he scored a game-high 25 points to go with six assists and six rebounds in the 102-101 loss.
The fourth-year guard did note some soreness, which wasn’t unexpected after the 25-minute effort.
Cam Thomas goes up for two of his game-high 25 points on Sunday against the Magic in his first game back from a hamstring injury. Getty Images “Yeah, I feel good. Obviously a little sore, you know playing, come back and playing high intensity like that,” Thomas said following the game. “So I am a little sore right now, but at the end of day, I feel good. Felt great, playing out there. Just got to do the other things for game rhythm, conditioning and fatigue. Just getting all that back to where I was, but until I get back to that, I’ll feel good. Be ready. Be CT again.”
“His first half was great; 14 points, five assists … it was on pace for an amazing game,” head coach Jordi Fernandez said. “I really liked his aggressiveness. It looked like he was just back, and shots were going and was looking great. And I’m happy that he’s back on the court.”
Thomas said it will take him a few games to get back to his vintage self after he shot 33 percent from the field on Sunday (6-for-18), which is a dip from his 45 percent shooting average of the season.
The high-scoring guard also missed the final shot of the game — a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer — but Thomas believes it was a shot he would make if he had a few games back under his belt since the injury.
“Got a great look. You know, a shot that I’m pretty sure everybody believes that I can make,” Thomas said. “You know, still my first game back. Trying to get my legs up under me. So pretty sure if I shot that shot a few games down the road, it would go in.
“Some of the shots I was missing today, I don’t normally miss those. I think some of that is just, you know, obviously fatigue and legs, and just getting back to playing these kind of minutes with the defense, you know, keying in on it, almost, I just got to get back in the flow, in the flow of things.”
Across the 13 games Thomas missed due to injury, the Nets went 4-9.
Cam Johnson (left hip soreness) left the game against the Magic during the fourth quarter and did not return.
Following the loss, Fernandez did not have an update on the sixth-year forward.
Johnson finished with nine points, three rebounds, four assists, and three steals across 25 minutes.
The Brooklyn Nets’ rookie guard, Cam Thomas, recently made his return to the court after missing several games due to an ankle injury. Despite the time off, Thomas says he “felt great” in his comeback game.Thomas, known for his scoring ability and confidence on the court, wasted no time making an impact in his return. In his first game back, he put up impressive numbers, showing no signs of rust from his time on the sidelines.
Fans of the Nets are excited to see Thomas back in action and contributing to the team’s success. With his scoring prowess and fearless attitude, he adds another dimension to an already talented roster.
As Thomas continues to shake off any lingering effects of his injury, the Nets are hopeful that he will be a key player down the stretch as they make a push towards the playoffs. Keep an eye on Cam Thomas as he looks to make a big impact in his rookie season.

Nets Notes: Thomas, Clowney, Leadership, Williams
After starting the season with a 9-10 record, the Nets lost for the 10th time in their last 13 games on Sunday in Orlando, but there was a silver lining. As Brian Lewis of The New York Post writes, leading scorer Cam Thomas was active for the first time since November 25 and said after racking up 25 points, six assists, and six rebounds in just 25 minutes of action that he “felt great” in his return.
“Obviously a little sore, you know playing, come back and playing high intensity like that,” said Thomas, who was coming off a hamstring strain. “So I am a little sore right now, but at the end of day, I feel good. Felt great, playing out there. Just got to do the other things for game rhythm, conditioning and fatigue. Just getting all that back to where I was, but until I get back to that, I’ll feel good. Be ready. Be CT again.”
Thomas, who started each of his first 17 games of the season, came off the bench on Sunday and was on a minutes restriction — his 25 minutes were a season-low, excepting the game in which he got injured. He’ll likely face some form of minutes limit for a few more games while he works his way back to 100%.
“Some of the shots I was missing (Sunday), I don’t normally miss those,” he told reporters, including Lewis. “I think some of that is just, you know, obviously fatigue and legs, and just getting back to playing these kind of minutes with the defense, you know, keying in on it, almost, I just got to get back in the flow, in the flow of things.”
Here’s more on the Nets:
- Noah Clowney will rely on the lessons he learned from Dorian Finney-Smith now that his former teammate has been traded to the Lakers, Lewis states in a separate story. Clowney, who’s proving himself worthy of increased minutes by averaging 13.0 points and 5.2 rebounds over the last six games, said Finney-Smith taught him to keep each game in perspective. “I got a lot of different types of advice,” Clowney said. “Just keeping a level head through it all, knowing what a long-term goal is, things like that. It’s 82 games, you know? You can’t stress over all things like that.”
- Trading away Finney-Smith and Dennis Schröder in the past two weeks has left a lack of veteran leadership in Brooklyn, notes Bridget Reilly of The New York Post. That was evident Sunday as the Nets couldn’t hold onto a 17-point fourth quarter lead against the Magic. “Today we just needed one more grown-up to bring the guys together and calm everybody down and execute on the defensive end and win the game,” coach Jordi Fernandez said. “And it didn’t happen. So I put that on all the guys on our team that are over 23 years old, that those are our grown-ups. And if you cannot do that, then it’s just going to be tough.”
- Nets wing Ziaire Williams, who has missed the team’s past 11 games due to a left knee sprain, was a full participant in Tuesday’s practice and hopes to play in one half of Brooklyn’s back-to-back set vs. Toronto on Wednesday and Milwaukee on Thursday, tweets Lewis.
- Sources tell Lucas Kaplan of NetsDaily that the Nets are highly motivated to use their projected $70MM in cap space this summer “if the right opportunity” comes along. Kaplan cautions against being too aggressive about spending at this stage of the rebuild and recommends tanking for another season before moving forward in the summer of 2026.

Nets Notes: Thomas, Clowney, Leadership, WilliamsThe Brooklyn Nets have been making headlines lately with key roster moves and standout performances on the court. Here are some updates on the latest news surrounding the team:
– Lance Thomas: The Nets recently signed veteran forward Lance Thomas to a 10-day contract. Thomas brings a wealth of experience to the team and adds depth to the frontcourt. His defensive skills and leadership qualities will be valuable assets for the Nets as they push for a playoff spot.
– Jadeveon Clowney: In a surprising move, the Nets signed NFL star Jadeveon Clowney to a one-year deal. While Clowney is best known for his prowess on the football field, he has expressed a keen interest in basketball and will be joining the Nets as a two-sport athlete. It remains to be seen how Clowney will fit in with the team, but his athleticism and competitive spirit are sure to make an impact.
– Leadership: With the departure of veteran guard Kyrie Irving, the Nets are looking to other players to step up and fill the leadership void. Kevin Durant and James Harden have been vocal leaders on the court, while head coach Steve Nash has emphasized the importance of teamwork and communication. As the season progresses, the Nets will need strong leadership to guide them through the challenges ahead.
– Williams: Point guard Spencer Dinwiddie has been a key contributor for the Nets this season, providing scoring and playmaking off the bench. However, rumors have been swirling about a potential trade involving Dinwiddie, with teams expressing interest in acquiring the talented guard. The Nets will need to carefully consider their options and weigh the potential impact of trading away a valuable player like Dinwiddie.
Overall, the Nets are in a strong position as they continue their push for the playoffs. With a talented roster, experienced veterans, and emerging stars, the team is well-equipped to make a deep postseason run. Stay tuned for more updates on the Brooklyn Nets as the season unfolds.

Texas A&M’s transfer portal departures now feature one of the more surprising additions this offseason. Junior wide receiver Noah Thomas has entered the portal after three seasons under coaches Jimbo Fisher and Mike Elko.
Thomas’s Aggies career was promising from the jump, as the former high school standout was compared to Texas A&M HOF receiver Mike Evans due to his 6-6 frame and large catch radius. However, injuries and changes to the offense hampered Thomas’s ability to become the No. 1 receiving option.
Still, Thomas delivered during what is now his final season with the Aggies under the guidance of offensive coordinator Collin Klein, recording a career-high and team-leading 39 receptions, 574 yards, and eight touchdowns, including a 73-yard touchdown in A&M’s win over Arkansas.
Thomas will end his A&M career just 16 yards shy of the century mark (984), and will look to become the clear cut No. 1 wide receiver for the next program he chooses. This news wasn’t a complete shock for Mike Elko, given the three wide receiver additions from the portal, including NC State transfer KC Concepcion.
However, losing Thomas’s size and experience does hurt a young WR corps, meaning Elko and his staff will likely need to add one more receiver similar to Thomas’s long frame.

Noah Thomas enters NCAA transfer portal
Thomas battled through injuries in 2023. In the end, it made him a better player this past season and he should be sought after in the portal.
“It was tough but everyone’s a little banged up during the season,” Thomas said back in the summer. “I had a different scenario, but, yeah, it was tough. I got to go through some adversity. One once in a while … It was a little battle that I had to get through, but I’m good now.
“I feel great. I’m back to my speed. I’m back to my strengths. So, I feel better than ever.”
Head coach Mike Elko was very complimentary of Thomas leading into the season.
“Yeah. I think he has tremendous size [and] a very large catch radius. I think he’s gotten healthy; he had some offseason stuff that he was dealing with towards the end of the year last year,” Elko said. “He’s getting healthier. He got healthier as spring went on. I think it’s going to be really important for him to have a really strong summer. If he can develop some strength and get his body where it could possibly be; yeah, I think he has all the makings of being a guy that we can use as a top target.”
Texas A&M wide receiver Noah Thomas has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal, seeking a new opportunity for his collegiate football career. Thomas, a redshirt sophomore, has shown promise during his time with the Aggies and is sure to attract interest from multiple programs. With his speed, agility, and hands, Thomas has the potential to make a significant impact wherever he lands.
