Jimmie Johnson doubles down on free throw competition with Shaquille O’Neal, raises stakes
The back-and-forth between Jimmie Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal took another turn Friday. The NASCAR icon fired back at the NBA legend and made a new proposal in their free throw competition.
This all started when O’Neal called out Johnson for trying for the Daytona 500 once again. He will look to make his 22nd appearance in the race, and O’Neal joked about whether 22 years was enough. Johnson said he still has more in the tank, but asked how Shaq’s jump shot is.
The social media spat continued and developed into a free throw competition. O’Neal suggested he’d get to drive Johnson’s Daytona car if he wins. But Johnson took things a step further.
“Oh, classic @SHAQ sliding in my DMs,” Johnson wrote Friday. “Only place you’re driving my car is to dinner. If you win, you can design my Daytona car—how good are you with crayons? If I win, I’ve got some sweet gear for you to rock.”
More on Jimmie Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal’s back-and-forth
O’Neal, of course, wasn’t known much for that jump shot or his efficiency at the charity stripe. He retired as a career 52% free throw shooter but was as dominant a center as anyone has ever seen in the NBA. Without knowing much of his prowess on the hardwood, Johnson has to like his chances against O’Neal — in a free throw competition, that is.
O’Neal, of course, retired from the NBA in 2011 and is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. He’s also a staple of TNT’s Inside The NBA, which will move to ESPN next season as part of a sublicensing agreement.
Johnson, meanwhile, made his Daytona 500 debut in 2002 and has two victories to his name. But at 49 years old, he’s racing a more limited schedule.
As part of his announcement, he also released his 2025 schedule. It only includes a second race in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte. If he qualifies in both races, Charlotte will be his 700th Cup Series start. Carvana will serve as the sponsor for Johnson, and he will be back in the No. 84 for his team, Legacy Motor Club.
Johnson, who co-owns Legacy alongside Maury Gallagher, has competed in 12 races over the last two seasons, making nine starts in 2024. His best finish was a P26 result in the last season’s finale at Phoenix. Johnson has an average finish of 31.8.
Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson is not backing down from his latest challenge against basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal. After their intense free throw competition went viral on social media, Johnson has decided to raise the stakes and double down on their friendly rivalry. In a recent interview, Johnson revealed that he and Shaq have agreed to a rematch on the basketball court, but this time with even higher stakes. Not only will the loser have to wear the other’s jersey during a NASCAR race, but they have also decided to donate $10,000 to charity in the winner’s name.
“I’m not one to back down from a challenge, especially when it comes to competing against a legend like Shaq,” Johnson said. “I may not be able to dunk like him, but I’ll do whatever it takes to come out on top in this free throw competition.”
The NASCAR superstar has been putting in extra practice on the basketball court in preparation for the rematch, determined to show that he has what it takes to outshoot the 7’1″ basketball icon.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the results of this epic showdown between two sports greats, eager to see who will come out on top and claim bragging rights in this unique cross-sport rivalry. Stay tuned for updates on the Johnson vs. O’Neal free throw competition!

FRISCO, Texas — Former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders said Saturday he is unsure if he will throw at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis next month.
Sanders is attending the East-West Shrine Bowl but will not participate in practice or in the game Thursday. He was at the West team’s first practice at the University of North Texas on Saturday morning but stood on the field, watching the other prospects.
While Sanders won’t conduct any on-field work at the Shrine Bowl, he reiterated his belief that he’s worthy of being the top pick in the 2025 NFL draft. He has been training in the Dallas area with former Miami‘s Cam Ward, another top quarterback prospect in this year’s draft.
“We changed the program at Jackson [State University],” Sanders said. “We went to Colorado, changed the program. And we did everything people didn’t think we were able to do. So, that’s why I know I’m the most guaranteed risk you can take.”
Sanders met with multiple teams Friday, including the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns and New York Giants, who hold the first three picks in the draft, respectively. The Titans met with Sanders for 45 minutes.
“I like that I’m able to get in the forefront of everything and they’re able to understand me and ask me whatever questions they want,” Sanders said. “I’m not ducking. I ain’t hiding. I’m right here, live in the flesh and able to answer whatever questions are out there.”
While Sanders is confident in his worthiness as the first overall pick, he said he would be “thankful for whatever situation and whoever drafts me. I know I’ll be able to change their program.”
Asked what he will bring to a team, Sanders smiled and said, “A lot of wins.”
Shedeur’s older brother Shilo, a safety, is also in Texas for the game. Colorado is also represented by wide receivers Will Sheppard, LaJohntay Wester, Jimmy Horn Jr. and cornerback Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig.
ESPN’s Turron Davenport contributed to this report.
Shedeur Sanders, the highly-touted quarterback prospect and son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, is facing a tough decision ahead of the NFL combine. The talented signal-caller has been turning heads with his impressive performances on the field, but he is unsure if he will throw at the upcoming combine.Sanders has been training hard in preparation for the combine, but he is reportedly dealing with a minor injury that could affect his ability to showcase his throwing skills. While some scouts believe that Sanders should rest and recover in order to perform at his best in front of NFL teams, others feel that he should push through and compete at the combine.
Regardless of his decision, Sanders remains a top prospect in this year’s draft class and is expected to draw significant interest from NFL teams. Stay tuned for updates on whether Sanders will ultimately decide to throw at the combine and how it may impact his draft stock.

Former UFC champion Israel Adesanya has a big name in mind for a potential post-fight callout if he’s victorious this weekend in Riyadh.
Israel Adesanya will return to the Octagon this Saturday against Nassourdine Imavov in his first non-title fight since UFC 234. He’s looking to snap the first losing skid of his MMA career after back-to-back title defeats to Sean Strickland and Dricus du Plessis.
Adesanya is in a unique spot in the UFC middleweight title picture. For the first time in a long time, he’s on the outside looking in when it comes to the middleweight title mix as he looks to work his back to another potential shot at the belt.
In the meantime, Adesanya’s willingness to face top contenders like Imavov shows his seriousness about getting back to the title. Strickland and du Plessis will square off in a rematch at UFC 312 next month with Khamzat Chimaev likely set for the winner.
Assuming that’s the case, Adesanya doesn’t mind facing another contender should he defeat Imavov this weekend in Riyadh. His target? a Brazilian juggernaut who is quickly approaching title contention.
Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images Israel Adesanya calls out surging Brazilian contender for next fight with a win at UFC Riyadh
In a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Adesanya called out Caio Borralho for a fight after UFC Riyadh.
“Good style, I like his style,” Adesanya said. “Our interactions have been respectful and cordial. And it’s just f***ing hands, bro. You’re good, I’m good, let’s throw hands and see what’s up. No bad blood or nothing, I just want to test myself against these young guys like Nassourdine Imavov.
“I know the answer, but I want to prove it to myself and find out myself. So we’re going to find out.”
Borralho defeated Adesanya’s UFC 276 rival, Jared Cannonier, in his first UFC main event last August by unanimous decision. He’s unbeaten in the UFC and holds a 16-fight winning streak overall.
Adesanya and Borralho were briefly rumored to clash at UFC 312 in Sydney, but the matchmakers pivoted on booking the fight. A win at UFC Riyadh would set Adesanya up nicely for either a fight with a top contender like Borralho, or other potential options.
Israel Adesanya set for first non-title fight since UFC 234
Adesanya’s return comes after a submission loss to du Plessis at UFC 305 last year. Before the defeat to du Plessis, Adesanya suffered a stunning loss to Strickland to abruptly end his second title stint at UFC 293.
Adesanya would be the toughest test of Borralho’s career, by far, but would be an important step in his pursuit of title contention. Borralho has also defeated the likes of Abus Magomedov and Paul Craig during his UFC tenure.
First thing’s first for Adesanya as he looks to snap his first MMA skid, get back in the win column, and return to the title mix. But a victory this weekend could point him in the direction of facing Borralho or another top middleweight as he looks to potentially return to the throne.

A heavy weight thrown by a participant at an indoor high school track meet cleared safety barriers and struck and killed a spectator in Colorado Springs on Sunday, the event organizers said.
“A member of the attending audience was killed when a hammer thrown by a participant cleared certified barriers and struck him,” said a statement from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, which hosted the meet at its Mountain Lion Fieldhouse.
The meet was canceled after the incident.
A spokeswoman for the El Paso County coroner’s office said on Monday that it had not performed an autopsy and could not yet release the name of the person who was killed.
The Colorado United Track Club said in an email reported by 11 News and other local news media that the victim was the father of one of its team members.
In the more familiar hammer throw, contested outdoors at events like the Olympics, competitors spin around in a circle to build momentum and then release a heavy ball on a chain, which is known as a hammer.
For safety, the spinning takes place in a cage with an open segment for the hammer to go through when it is released.
At indoor meets like the one in Colorado Springs, the event is normally renamed the weight throw.
The implement is attached to a grip, rather than a chain, and is heavier than the hammer so that it does not travel as far. As in the hammer competition, the thrower is within a cage or netting.
At the Olympic Games, men can throw the hammer well over 200 feet. High school boys typically throw a 25-pound weight indoors, but they can still throw it quite a distance: The record for that age group is currently more than 90 feet.
Hammer and other throwing events can be dangerous, and cases of injury to competitors, officials and spectators are not rare.
As recently as September, a teenager was critically injured by a hammer at a meet in Australia.
Javelins can be thrown even farther than hammers, and their sharp tips also contribute to the danger. Even at the sport’s highest levels, disaster can occur.
In 2008, at the Golden League in Rome, the top level of the professional sport, a javelin thrown by an elite athlete struck a long jumper, Salim Sdiri of France, causing severe internal injuries.
In a tragic turn of events at a track meet, a spectator was killed by a weight tossed in the indoor hammer throw event. The incident occurred during a competition when the weight, which can weigh up to 35 pounds, flew out of the designated throwing area and struck a spectator in the stands.Emergency services were immediately called to the scene, but unfortunately, the spectator succumbed to their injuries. The athlete involved in the throw was said to be devastated by the accident and is cooperating with authorities in the investigation.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers present in track and field events, even for spectators. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time. Safety measures and precautions must be strictly enforced to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

Spectator killed by hammer throw during track meet at UCCS fieldhouse
A man was killed Sunday morning during a high school track and field meet at a fieldhouse on the University of Colorado’s Colorado Springs campus, school officials said.
UCCS spokesperson Chris Valentine said in a news release the man, who was watching in the audience at the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse, died when a hammer weight thrown by a participant cleared “certified barriers” and struck him.
The hammer throw involves hurling a metal weight — attached to a chain and grip — as far as possible after generating momentum by spinning in a circle.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to the accident after the man was struck at about 9:30 a.m., the release said. UCCS and Colorado Springs police officers also responded.
Paramedics provided medical care, but the man was declared dead at the scene, according to the news release.
“We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved,” UCCS Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet said in the release.
The track meet was one of a three-meet series for club sport high school students across the state, according to the release. The first meet was on Dec. 15, 2024.
The man will be identified at a later date by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.

Tragic Accident at UCCS Fieldhouse: Spectator Killed by Hammer Throw during Track MeetIn a devastating turn of events, a spectator was killed during a track meet at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) Fieldhouse when they were struck by a hammer throw.
The incident occurred during a track and field competition, where athletes were participating in the hammer throw event. The spectator, whose identity has not been released, was in a restricted area near the field when they were hit by the heavy metal ball attached to a wire.
Emergency responders were immediately called to the scene, but unfortunately, the injuries sustained were fatal. The UCCS athletic department expressed their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim, and stated that they are cooperating with authorities to investigate the incident.
The hammer throw is a highly technical and dangerous event in track and field, requiring athletes to have a designated throwing area and for spectators to be kept at a safe distance. It is unclear at this time how the spectator ended up in the restricted area.
Our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time. We hope that this tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of safety protocols at sporting events, and that steps will be taken to prevent such accidents from happening in the future.

Errant hammer throw at youth track meet kills spectator
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — An errant weight thrown by a competitor struck and killed a spectator at a youth track and field meet in Colorado, according to officials at the university where the competition was held.
The hammer — a heavy ball on a chain — in the hammer throw event cleared certified barriers before striking the man Sunday morning at the University of Colorado’s Colorado Springs campus, according to a university statement.
Firefighters pronounced the man dead at the scene. He apparently had tried to shield his wife and son from the ball, KRDO-TV reported.
He was the father of a competitor for the Colorado United Track Club that hosted the event for high school-age athletes from around the state, according to the station.
Authorities also did not identify the athlete who threw the hammer.
“We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved,” campus Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet said in a statement.
The weight used in the hammer throw event weighs 16 pounds for men and 9 pounds for women in adult competition, according to World Athletics, the international track and field governing body.
Fatal accidents at track and field competitions are rare. A hammer killed a student at a college track and field meet at Wheaton College in Illinois in 2017.
A shot put struck and killed an officiant during practice at the U.S. track and field championships in Los Angeles in 2005.
This past weekend at a youth track meet, tragedy struck when an errant hammer throw resulted in the death of a spectator. The event, which was supposed to be a fun and competitive gathering for young athletes, quickly turned into a somber and heartbreaking scene. The hammer throw is a track and field event where athletes throw a heavy metal ball attached to a wire. It requires precision, strength, and skill to execute safely. Unfortunately, in this instance, something went terribly wrong.
The thrower, whose name has not been released, lost control of the hammer mid-throw, sending it veering off course and into the stands where spectators were seated. One unlucky individual was struck by the hammer and tragically lost their life as a result.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the inherent dangers present in sports, even at the youth level. It also raises questions about the safety protocols in place at such events and the need for stricter regulations to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victim, as well as to all those affected by this terrible tragedy. May this serve as a wake-up call for the sporting community to prioritize safety above all else.
