  • Here’s why Madison Keys hopes she won’t get a text from Frances Tiafoe before Australian Open final

Madison Keys has no doubt been bombarded by messages of congratulations and encouragement by family, friends, and fans alike during this Australian Open as the American has advanced to her first Grand Slam singles final in eight years.

But there’s one person that Keys hopes she won’t be hearing from before she steps into Rod Laver Arena to face Aryna Sabalenka for the women’s singles title on Saturday night in Melbourne: her good friend and fellow American Frances Tiafoe.

Don’t worry: They’re still tight. She’s just superstitious.

“We have this kind of joke where in the past he wouldn’t say anything pre-tournament or anything, and then he would text me, like, in the quarters or the semis or something, and I would lose the next round,” Keys said before toppling Iga Swiatek in a dramatic semifinal match where she saved match point.

“So we have this new rule. Like I saw him a few days ago, and I said, ‘Don’t text me, I don’t want to hear from you at all, just leave me alone and we’ll talk after the tournament.’”

Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe have been close friends for years, but as the Australian Open final approaches, Keys is hoping she won’t receive a text from Tiafoe.

The reason? Tiafoe is known for his playful banter and trash-talking on the court, and Keys doesn’t want any distractions as she prepares to compete in one of the biggest matches of her career.

While their friendship off the court is strong, Keys knows that Tiafoe’s competitive spirit could get the best of him if he were to send her a message before the final. She wants to stay focused and mentally prepared for the match, and she knows that any distractions could throw her off her game.

So, as Keys gears up for the final, she’s hoping that Tiafoe will respect her wishes and keep the texts to a minimum. After all, when it comes to competing for a Grand Slam title, every little bit of focus counts.

  • Frances Tiafoe angrily lashes out at Australian Open water bottles | Tennis | Sport

Frances Tiafoe was given a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct after he threw water bottles onto the court in rage, before going out of the Australian Open in five sets to Fabian Marozsan.

The American had lost the first three games of the fifth set, having failed to take advantage of as many as 10 break chances in the fourth, before his frustration boiled over.

He sent a forehand too long as Marozsan held onto his serve, having broken Tiafoe the previous game, before the 26-year-old walked over to his chair and launched his bottles.

Eurosport commentator Mike Cation explained: “The water bottles flying here from Frances Tiafoe, throws them out onto the court.

“Frances Tiafoe getting a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct for knocking those water bottles onto the court, the frustration of missing out on those 10 break chances finally bubbling over. Those water bottles, not cheap.”

Tiafoe had earlier in the match remonstrated with the chair umpire as he disagreed over a call, before going down 6-7(3), 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to the Hungarian.

It is the second year in a row that Tiafoe has exited Melbourne in the second round.

Tiafoe would have backed himself for a deep run at the opening Grand Slam of the year, having been put in a quarter of the draw headlined by himself, Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton.

But having lost from a 2-1 set lead, world No. 59 Marozsan has progressed to the third round where he will face Lorenzo Sonego after his win over 18-year-old wonderkid Joao Fonseca.

Now Tiafoe, who has excelled on hard courts at the US Open with two runs to the semi-finals in the past three years, has not advanced to the second week in Melbourne since he reached the quarter-finals six years ago.

After his first-round win over Arthur Rinderknech, which lasted four hours and eight minutes, Tiafoe admitted that his recovery was “horrible” before going on to struggle in the latter stages against Marozsan.

“Horrible, it’s been terrible,” Tiafoe said of his recovery on Monday. “I just, like, walked around for a while in the locker room, just stitches. Kind of managed that. Finally got in the shower. Finally ate. But still not feeling great.

“But at the same time you do feel great because you get to see another day. So you feel even worse if you’re feeling like this and you’re out of the tournament.”

Frances Tiafoe, the American tennis player, has made headlines once again, but this time not for his impressive on-court skills. During his match at the Australian Open, Tiafoe was seen angrily lashing out at the water bottles on the sidelines.

In a moment of frustration, Tiafoe smashed his racket against the water bottles, sending them flying in all directions. Spectators and commentators were left shocked by the outburst, with many speculating on the reasons behind Tiafoe’s sudden rage.

Some attributed it to a string of missed shots, while others pointed to the intense pressure of the tournament. Regardless of the cause, Tiafoe’s actions were met with mixed reactions from fans and critics alike.

While some condemned his behavior as unsportsmanlike, others defended Tiafoe, citing the high-stakes nature of professional tennis. Whatever the case may be, one thing is for certain – Frances Tiafoe’s outburst at the Australian Open water bottles will not soon be forgotten.

  • Frances Tiafoe goes 0 for 10 on break points in 4th set, falls to Fabian Marozsan in AO decider

Sensing a turning tide, the world No. 59 blew the contest wide open with a 5-0 lead—capping his day with eight of the final nine games to eliminate Tiafoe in three hours and 17 minutes. The American finished just three for 20 on his break points.

For the second straight year, Tiafoe came into Melbourne Park as the No. 17 seed and was sent packing in the second round. In 2024, he fell to Tomas Machac over four sets and has not advanced to the second week since making the quarterfinals six years ago.

Marozsan has come through consecutive deciders following his opening victory over Thiago Seyboth Wild that saw him advance 7-5 in the fifth. The Hungarian, seeking to reach the round of 16 on the major stage for the first time, awaits Lorenzo Sonego. The Italian held off 18-year-old Joao Fonseca, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Frances Tiafoe goes 0 for 10 on break points in 4th set, falls to Fabian Marozsan in AO decider

In a thrilling Australian Open final, Frances Tiafoe faced off against Fabian Marozsan in a battle that had fans on the edge of their seats. Tiafoe came out strong, winning the first two sets and looking poised to claim his first Grand Slam title. However, Marozsan fought back, taking the next two sets to force a decisive fifth set.

It all came down to the fourth set, where Tiafoe had numerous opportunities to break Marozsan’s serve and take control of the match. But despite his best efforts, Tiafoe went an astonishing 0 for 10 on break points, allowing Marozsan to hold on and eventually win the set.

In the end, Marozsan’s consistency and mental toughness proved to be the difference as he claimed the victory and his first Australian Open title. Tiafoe, on the other hand, will have to regroup and learn from this experience as he looks to bounce back and compete in future Grand Slam events.

Mpetshi Perricard thwarts fourth seed Tiafoe to reach quarters

Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard’s giant-killing ways have carried him into his fourth ATP quarterfinal after dismantling the Brisbane International’s fourth seed Frances Tiafoe at Pat Rafter Arena on Thursday.

On the heels of his three-set triumph over Nick Kyrgios on Tuesday, the 21-year-old put on another serving masterclass to beat the American for the second time in as many meetings, 6-4 7-6(4).

The 31st-ranked Frenchman started the match with four straight aces, the first of which was clocked at 232km/h, and ended with 20.

“I was very warm after this one,” he said. “I did not see the speed after the serve but yeah it was very fast.”

It followed the 36 aces he sent past Kyrgios in the opening round. He distinctly remembered the age at which he first started serving those 200km/h-plus cannons.

“Maybe 10, no,” he laughed. “I think I was 15 or 16 years old. I was very proud of myself … I think I need some power, a little bit more. I need 230 on every serve.”

The 94-minute victory set a quarterfinal clash with 19-year-old Czech Jakub Mensik, an earlier 6-3 6-2 winner over Serbian lucky loser Dusan Lajovic.

    > READ MORE: Birrell surges into biggest career quarterfinal

It marked his sixth triumph from seven showdowns against top-20 opponents, with his lone defeat against Carlos Alcaraz in Beijing.

“It was a good match, not very easy to play against Frances,” he said. “I won the first set, it was very tight in the second. I managed to put some pressure on the second serve and it worked and I’m very happy with my performance today …

“I did a lot of forehand because Frances loves to make me run a little bit. Yeah I don’t like to run so of course I needed to be aggressive, and it worked from the beginning so I’m very happy about it.”

Novak Djokovic and Frances Tiafoe will be back on the court in Brisbane on Thursday with a pair of marquee matchups on their hands. Djokovic faces familiar foe Gael Monfils, while Tiafoe awaits Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

    (4) Frances Tiafoe vs. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard

Mpetshi Perricard wrapped up 2024 in the best form of his life and the 21-year-old Frenchman is showing no signs of slowing down. The reigning Basel champion got a tough draw at the Brisbane International but battled past Nick Kyrgios 7-6(2), 6-7(4), 7-6(3) in a match that unsurprisingly featured zero breaks of serve. Mpetshi Perricard blasted 36 aces, leaving Kyrgios to declare that his opponent’s serve was superior to that of guys like Ivo Karlovic, John Isner, and Milos Raonic.

Up next for the world No. 31 is a second meeting with Tiafoe, who lost their only previous encounter 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 6-3 at the recent Paris Masters. Mpetshi Perricard double-faulted a ridiculous 13 times in that contest, but he still did not lose serve a single time. That doesn’t bode well for Tiafoe, who has cooled off a bit since his semifinal run at the U.S. Open this past summer. The 18th-ranked American also generally plays a lot better when the spotlight is on at bigger events than he does at ATP 250s. This is a great opportunity for Mpetshi Perricard.

    Pick: Perricard in 3

    (1) Novak Djokovic vs. Gael Monfils

The most lopsided matchup in ATP Tour history will add another chapter when Djokovic and Monfils meet for the 20th time in their careers. Djokovic leads the head-to-head series 19-0, and no man has won more times against the same opponent without a loss. Ten have been straight-set results, including 6-3, 6-2 beatdowns in each of their two most recent encounters (2022 Madrid Masters, 2023 Cincinnati Masters).

Does Monfils have any chance of finally getting over the hump on Thursday? Probably not! Djokovic may be 37 years old, but–even though he did not win any slams last season–he accomplished his biggest goal in 2024 with a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. The Serb kicked off his 2025 campaign by easing past Rinky Hijikata 6-3, 6-3 on Tuesday in Brisbane. Monfils did well to hold off Nishesh Basavareddy 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the opening round, but nothing suggests that the 38-year-old Frenchman is ready to take down Djokovic.

    Pick: Djokovic in 2

In an exciting day of tennis, we witnessed two thrilling matches – Tiafoe vs. Mpetshi Perricard and Djokovic vs. Monfils.

In the first match, Frances Tiafoe faced off against Harold Mpetshi Perricard in a closely contested battle. Both players showed great skill and determination, but it was Tiafoe who ultimately emerged victorious, showcasing his impressive athleticism and shot-making abilities.

On the other court, Novak Djokovic took on Gael Monfils in a highly anticipated matchup. Djokovic, the world number one, demonstrated why he is considered one of the greatest players of all time with his precise and powerful play. Monfils, known for his flashy style and athleticism, put up a strong fight but ultimately fell short against the Serbian star.

Overall, both matches provided fans with plenty of excitement and top-notch tennis. Congratulations to Tiafoe and Djokovic for their impressive wins, and commiserations to Mpetshi Perricard and Monfils for their valiant efforts. Tennis fans can look forward to more thrilling matches in the days to come.
