The Tigers designated Faedo, 29, for assignment last week after signing Tommy Kahnle.
Faedo, a Tampa native, went 5-3 with a 3.61 ERA in 37 games (six starts) for the Tigers in 2024. He’s 8-13 with a 4.51 ERA in 64 career games (30 starts) for the Tigers, who drafted him in the first round (No. 18 overall) of the 2017 draft.
Delgado, 20, batted .259 with four home runs and 30 RBIs between stints in rookie ball and Class-A Charleston in 2024.
The Rays announced that infielder Osleivis Basabe was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
The Tampa Bay Rays have made a big move to bolster their pitching staff by acquiring right-handed pitcher Alex Faedo from the Detroit Tigers.
Faedo, 25, was a first-round pick (18th overall) by the Tigers in the 2017 MLB Draft out of the University of Florida. He has shown promise in the minor leagues, posting a 3.90 ERA with 305 strikeouts in 297 innings pitched.
The Rays are hoping that Faedo can provide some much-needed depth to their rotation or bullpen as they look to make a playoff push in the highly competitive American League East.
Stay tuned for more updates on this trade and how Faedo will fit into the Rays’ plans for the rest of the season.
After coming to terms on a deal with Tommy Kahnle (not to mention Jack Flaherty last night), the Detroit Tigers apparently felt they had some flexibility to sell off a pitcher. So they’d DFA’d swing man Alex Faedo, and now they’re trading him to the Rays.
Kahnle and Flaherty in, Faedo out:
Trade news: The Tampa Bay Rays are acquiring right-hander Alex Faedo from the Detroit Tigers for minor league catcher Enderson Delgado and cash, sources tell ESPN. Faedo was a solid contributor for Detroit last year but was DFA’d after the Tigers signed Tommy Kahnle.
Faedo, 29, was about 9% better than league average by results last year, mostly pitching in relief, though his peripherals were much worse. He’s still pre-arbitration so he comes quite cheaply in salary, but since he doesn’t have minor league options remaining, he’ll have to make the Rays’ Opening Day roster or hit waivers.
In exchange, the Tigers are getting a 20-year-old catching prospect in Enderson Delgado who isn’t in the Rays’ top 30, but did hit very well as a 19-year-old switch-hitter at Low-A last season, and is thought to be a good defender. Nice get for a DFA’d pitcher, though the Tigers may have already known they could get some value for Faedo when they opted to designate him for assignment.
As an aside, the “cash” inclusion is a little weird. Usually, if a team were trading for a DFA’d player, they would be sending ONLY cash or a player, not both. The cash, as we’ve seen a bunch of times already this offseason in deals involving the Cubs, is basically a stand-in for the waiver claim price – i.e., paying a little extra to jump to the front of the line. The Tigers are getting a player and cash in this one. It’s atypical. Doesn’t mean anything. Just atypical.
I don’t expect that Faedo’s presence in the DFA world was holding up any other reliever moves in free agency or trade, but I suppose you never know.
The Detroit Tigers have made a bold move by trading right-handed pitcher Alex Faedo to the Tampa Bay Rays. Faedo, a former first-round draft pick, has shown promise in the Tigers’ farm system but has yet to make a significant impact at the major league level.
In exchange for Faedo, the Tigers are receiving a package of prospects from the Rays, including a promising young outfielder and a couple of high-upside pitchers. This trade represents a calculated risk for Detroit, as they are banking on the potential of these young players to help bolster their roster in the future.
For the Rays, acquiring Faedo gives them another arm to add to their already formidable pitching staff. With a strong core of young talent, Tampa Bay is hoping that Faedo can develop into a key contributor for them in the years to come.
Overall, this trade has the potential to benefit both teams in the long run, with the Tigers adding to their prospect pool and the Rays adding depth to their pitching staff. Only time will tell if this move pays off for both sides.
The Detroit Tigers have completed a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays in which they have traded right-handed pitcher Alex Faedo for catching prospect Enderson Delgado and cash, per Jeff Passan of ESPN.
Faedo has been growing in his role with the Tigers as a spot-starter and a long reliever in his first three seasons, and in 2024 had arguably his best showing.
In 57.1 innings pitched he had a 3.61 ERA, 1.343 WHIP, 55 strikeouts and 28 walks. He started a career-low six games as opposed to 12 each of his last two years. His difficulty has been with injuries, with a few stacking up including a shoulder strain most recently.
Ultimately, this is a move for the future.
Detroit moved off of a pitcher who was designated for assignment to get back an up-and-coming prospect from the Rays. Delgado was ranked as the 37th-best prospect in Tampa Bay’s farm system by Fangraphs about halfway through the 2024 season, and has continued to improve as he currently works at the Single-A level.
Delgado is 20 years old and has produced at a solid level.
In 202, he had a .255/.382/.773 slash line with four home runs and 21 RBI.
This type of production is intriguing, and makes him the type of prospect worth taking a flyer on in a deal like this.
With the Tigers looking somewhat towards the future while still trying to remain competitive and balance their assets between development and current talent, this deal makes sense for the timeline they have begun to distinguish.
The Detroit Tigers have made a move to ship off right-handed pitcher, Joe Jimenez, to the Tampa Bay Rays via trade. Jimenez, who has been with the Tigers since 2017, has struggled to find consistency on the mound in recent seasons.
In exchange for Jimenez, the Tigers will receive a player to be named later or cash considerations. The move comes as the Tigers look to shake up their roster and add some depth to their pitching staff.
The Rays, on the other hand, are hoping that Jimenez can find his form and contribute to their bullpen as they continue their push for a playoff spot. With a solid track record in the past, Jimenez could be a valuable addition to the Rays’ pitching staff.
It will be interesting to see how Jimenez performs with his new team and if the trade pays off for both the Tigers and the Rays. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Faedo, who doesn’t have any minor league options remaining, has been dealt to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for catcher Enderson Delgado and cash considerations, according to sources with knowledge of the trade.
Before the trade, Faedo designated for assignment by the Tigers last week to create room on the 40-man roster for the new reliever Tommy Kahnle, meaning Faedo would’ve landed on waivers had the Rays not acquired him in a trade.
The 29-year-old posted a 3.61 ERA with 28 walks (11.4% walk rate) and 55 strikeouts (22.4% strikeout rate) across 57⅓ innings in 37 games in the 2024 season. He has combined for a 4.51 ERA across 175⅔ innings in 64 games (30 starts) in his three-year MLB career.
The Tigers selected Faedo with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2017 draft.
Delgado, a 20-year-old switch-hitting catcher, hit .255 with four home runs, 28 walks and 54 strikeouts across 56 games for Low-A Charleston in the 2024 season. He also hit .204 with two home runs, 11 walks and 28 strikeouts across 31 games for the Perth Heat in the Australian Baseball League during the offseason.
On defense, Delgado is average as a catcher with above average skills in the way he leads a pitching staff. He has experience as a first baseman, but he projects to stick at catcher.
Delgado wasn’t among the Rays’ top 30 prospects before the trade, according to MLB Pipeline, but he could emerge as a top 30 prospect within the Tigers’ farm system if he makes developmental strides in 2025.

The Detroit Tigers have made a move to bolster their minor league system by trading pitcher Alex Faedo to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for a promising minor leaguer and some cash considerations.
Faedo, a former first-round pick by the Tigers in 2017, had been struggling to find his footing in the majors and the Tigers decided to part ways with the young pitcher in hopes of acquiring some additional talent for their farm system.
In return, the Tigers received a promising minor leaguer from the Rays organization who has shown potential to become a key player in the future. Additionally, the Tigers also received some cash considerations in the deal, providing them with some financial flexibility moving forward.
This trade marks a strategic move by the Tigers to continue building for the future, while also adding depth to their minor league system. Only time will tell if this trade will pay off for both teams involved. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
The Rays acquired right-hander Alex Faedo from the Tigers in exchange for Minor League catcher Enderson Delgado and cash on Monday. The Rays designated infielder Osleivis Basabe for assignment to make room for Faedo on their 40-man roster.
Detroit’s first-round pick from the 2017 Draft, the 29-year-old Faedo was designated for assignment last week when the Tigers signed reliever Tommy Kahnle. Faedo had seemingly found a role in Detroit’s bullpen after injuries stalled his career as a starter, but he ended last season on the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder strain he suffered in August. He posted a 5-3 record and 3.61 ERA in 37 games, including six starts.
“I told Alex this is a really difficult move for us to make,” Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said. “Alex is a really popular teammate in the clubhouse. He’s gotten some really big outs for us. It’s a move we really didn’t want to make, but our 40-man [roster] is getting more talented these days and any time you add a new player to the roster, it generally means that it costs you a valuable contributor on the back end.
TRADE DETAILS Rays get: RHP Alex Faedo Tigers get: Minor League C Enderson Delgado, cash
“Again, I think Alex has been a really talented pitcher and has gotten some big outs for us, but I think his out-of-options status made it a little bit more difficult of a fit on our roster here.”
Delgado, 20, was signed as an international free agent in January 2022 and split last season between Single-A Charleston and the Florida Complex League, hitting .259 with four homers and 30 RBIs in 65 games. He did not rank among the Rays’ top 30 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline.
Faedo was optioned in 2021, 2022 and 2023. He had been granted a fourth Minor League option last offseason because he had less than five years of service in the Majors or Minors due to injuries. The Tigers didn’t use the option, but since last year counted as Faedo’s fifth year, the extra option couldn’t carry over.
The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired pitcher Alex Faedo from the Detroit Tigers in a trade deal that has sent shockwaves through the baseball world. Faedo, who was the Tigers’ first-round draft pick in 2017, has shown great potential on the mound and is expected to bolster the Rays’ pitching rotation.
The 25-year-old right-hander has a powerful fastball and a devastating slider, making him a valuable asset for any team. In his three seasons in the minor leagues, Faedo has compiled an impressive 3.59 ERA with 214 strikeouts in 192 innings pitched.
The Rays, who are known for their savvy trades and ability to develop young talent, are hoping that Faedo will continue to progress and become a key contributor to their pitching staff. On the other hand, the Tigers are looking to acquire some much-needed prospects in exchange for Faedo as they continue their rebuilding process.
It will be interesting to see how Faedo performs in his new environment and how this trade ultimately pans out for both teams. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
The window is open for the Detroit Tigers to make a run for the World Series while reigning Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal remains under contract for the next two seasons, but free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman could be the final piece of the puzzle.
Adding Bregman — a two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion — will cement the Tigers as the favorites to win the American League Central in 2025, as well as put them in contention to win the World Series.
The Tigers — led by president of baseball operations Scott Harris — have conducted their offseason moves around their interest in signing Bregman, as they declined to upgrade the offense with other notable right-handed hitters.
For example, the Tigers showed interest in but passed on outfielder Anthony Santander, who eventually signed with the Toronto Blue Jays for five years and $92.5 million, first baseman Christian Walker, who eventually signed with the Houston Astros for three years and $60 million, and infielder Ha-Seong Kim, who eventually signed with the Tampa Bay Rays for two years and $29 million.
Meanwhile, the Tigers continue to be involved in the Bregman sweepstakes, along with the Astros, Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs. The only known offer is from the Astros, at six years and $156 million.
The four signings increased the 2025 payroll by more than $60 million, with Flaherty making $25 million in 2025. The projected 2025 payroll is approximately $140 million, which ranks just outside of the top 15 among the 30 MLB teams. Signing Bregman to a six-year contract would add another $25-30 million in average annual value to the payroll.
The Tigers need a third baseman and a middle-of-the-order hitter and a championship leader; Bregman brings Gold Glove defense at third base and Silver Slugger offense at the plate and 99 games of playoff experience.
Additionally, the Tigers have an excess of left-handed hitters in their lineup, previously described by Harris as a problem to solve after the Tigers were slammed out of the postseason by the Cleveland Guardians in Game 5 of the ALDS.
The Tigers signed Torres, a right-handed hitting second baseman, then moved left-handed hitter Keith to first base as the replacement for right-handed hitter Spencer Torkelson — in effect, making a righty-for-righty swap in the everyday lineup and leaving the Tigers with a lineup still out of balance.
The Tigers have already upgraded the lineup, rotation and bullpen for the 2025 season with their four signings in free agency. After Flaherty, signing Bregman would solidify the Tigers as World Series contenders this season, not just AL Central favorites.
There are less than 15 days until position players report to spring training.

The Detroit Tigers are not slowing down in their pursuit of Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, even after signing pitcher Jack Flaherty to a lucrative contract.
Despite bolstering their pitching staff with Flaherty, the Tigers are still in need of a power hitter like Bregman to boost their offense. Bregman, a two-time All-Star and Silver Slugger winner, would provide a significant upgrade to Detroit’s lineup.
The Tigers have reportedly been in talks with the Astros about a potential trade for Bregman, but no deal has been reached yet. However, the team remains optimistic that they can strike a deal to bring Bregman to Detroit.
With Flaherty solidifying their pitching rotation, adding Bregman to their lineup would make the Tigers a serious contender in the AL Central. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
I know you are probably busy, trying to figure out if you are going to re-sign with the Houston Astros — dude, not to be rude, but they already gave up on signing you.
Or go to the Chicago Cubs — ugh, sure, it’s a beautiful city but the traffic is awful.
Or land in Boston — a free agent signing with the Red Sox? Come on, man, that’s just cliché.
Or you could do something bold — something where you can truly make a difference and add another layer to your legacy — and sign with the Detroit Tigers.
Because you would fit so perfectly on this roster.
The Tigers have a bunch of young, improving, talented players, and a tremendous pitching staff — especially after bringing back right-hander Jack Flaherty late Sunday night. But they have one glaring need: they need another right-handed bat.
If they move Matt Vierling to the outfield for good, it would open up a spot for you at third base.
Perfect.
Now, I want to be straight up about something.
The Tigers need you … but you don’t have to carry this team.
You don’t have to be anything than who you are. Nobody thinks you are a savior or anything. I mean, this young, trade deadline-depleted team made the playoffs without you.
Just bang your 25 homers. Hit around .260. And play your Gold Glove defense.
Just be yourself. That will be good enough to take this team to the next level.
And if you are yourself, this team will get something else. All the intangibles.
It’s the way you act in the clubhouse. The way you can be a coach on the field. The way you lead by example. The way you prepare with a relentless work ethic.
Just be yourself and you will have a huge impact on these young players.
Don’t beat ’em, join ’em
Now, I want to bring up something, even though it might be a little painful for you. But it’s important for you to remember.
The last time I saw you in person was last October. I was in Houston to cover the AL wild-card round, and I went to your media availability.
“(The Tigers) got a bunch of really good arms,” you said. “Obviously, Tarik is really good, but their bullpen’s legit too. They’ve also got some other good starters as well. Obviously, they have played really well down the stretch, pitched really well down the stretch. A.J. does a really good job of putting them in good positions to succeed. Yeah, it’s definitely going to be tough, but we’ve got to find a way to get the job done.”
Lo and behold, that young team beat you guys. Stunned you, really.
They haven’t really lost anybody. They should get back some injured arms. Their young players should be even better, just from learning from last year and becoming more comfortable in the majors. And their infield is potentially stronger because they added Gleyber Torres, a right-handed hitter, at second base and that will allow Colt Keith to move to first.
You are gonna love Keith.
He’s still incredibly young and impressionable. But he just loves the game and he’s driven to be great. I have a feeling he’s going to have a monster season.
In fact, I think you are going to love this entire clubhouse. It’s full of a bunch of young dudes who want to win.
And that’s where you come in.
You can show them — just through your actions — how to become champions.
There’s another factor to your decision.
Obviously, you would be reunited with A.J. Hinch, your old Astros manager.
If you ask me, Hinch has grown. He’s an even better manager than he was in Houston. But that probably doesn’t surprise you. Because Hinch is one of those dudes who just loves to learn and try something new.
He pulled off something pretty incredible last season, employing a “pitching chaos” approach.
But it worked.
Because this team believes in Hinch.
And I believe you can make these kids even better.
If I’m being honest, there is only one negative if you come to Detroit. It would be a temporary roadblock for Jace Jung, who has struggled at third base but has tremendous upside with his bat.
But Torres is only on a one-year deal — shoot, they could flip him at the deadline — and Jung could return to second base, the position where he was drafted, the spot where he played more than 150 games in the minors and won a minor-league Gold Glove.
Detroit is waiting, Alex
Now, maybe, you are wondering: What would it be like playing in Detroit?
First of all, you can actually go outside in the summer, instead of melting in an endless string of 100-degree days in Houston.
And when the Tigers are winning, Detroit goes crazy and Comerica Park becomes electric.
Just like in Houston. You are gonna feel right at home.
The summers in Detroit are beautiful. We’ve got great restaurants and great people.
The Tigers got a new plane, a new clubhouse and all kinds of fancy bells and whistles.
And things have improved significantly behind the scenes.
Maybe you remember when the Astros got Justin Verlander. I’m sure, back then, he said stuff to you like: Man, we didn’t have analytics like this in Detroit.
But things have changed dramatically.
President of baseball operations Scott Harris has strengthened everything behind the scenes; and he has stocked the minor league system. They have nine prospects on ESPN’s top 200 list.
The pitching department squeezes every ounce of potential out of its young studs.
And all the hitters rave about the hitting department: Keith Beauregard, Michael Brdar and Lance Zawadzki.
“I would not be the hitter that I am today without Brdar, Keith and Lance,” Kerry Carpenter told me last fall. He hit 18 homers in just 87 games. “They’re so good.”
Finally, there’s one last thing you need to know about Detroit.
It doesn’t matter if you were drafted here. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been here.
Because if you win, Detroit fans will embrace you like something you have never heard before.
Just ask Jared Goff.
He helped the Lions win and now he’s got commercials, and he can’t go anywhere without people breaking out into chants: “JA-RED GOFF! JA-RED GOFF!”
That’s what will happen in Comerica Park, if you just be yourself.
Fans will chant your name: “AL-EX BREG-MAN! AL-EX BREG-MAN!”
But man, I realize this isn’t easy.
You’ve been in Houston for a long time.
And I don’t know how to break this to you but they have moved on without you. The Astros traded Kyle Tucker to the Cubs for third baseman Isaac Parades, pitcher Hayden Wesneski and prospect Cam Smith.
Yeah, I know they could shuffle their infield, send Jose Altuve out to left field, to fit you in.
But come on. That’s like breaking up with your girlfriend, she gets a new boyfriend, and then they say: Don’t worry, you can move back in. We’ll just shift things around and it’ll be just like the old days.
The Detroit Tigers recently made a trade that has left many fans and analysts scratching their heads, but when you take a closer look, it actually makes perfect sense.
The Tigers agreed to send outfielder Cameron Maybin to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for a minor league pitcher. While Maybin was a solid player for the Tigers, the move makes sense for a few reasons.
First, Maybin is set to become a free agent after the 2017 season, and the Tigers likely did not see him as a long-term solution in their outfield. By trading him now, they were able to get something in return for him rather than letting him walk away for nothing in the offseason.
Second, the Tigers are in the midst of a rebuilding phase, and acquiring a young pitcher in exchange for Maybin fits in with their long-term plans. By adding a promising prospect to their farm system, the Tigers are positioning themselves for future success.
Finally, the Tigers have a surplus of outfielders, making Maybin expendable. With players like Justin Upton, J.D. Martinez, and Tyler Collins already in the mix, the Tigers can afford to part ways with Maybin without significantly impacting their roster.
While the trade may not have been a blockbuster deal, it was a smart move for the Tigers given their current situation. By making this deal, the Tigers have positioned themselves well for the future while also clearing up some roster space in the present.
We’ve got another exciting American Athletic matchup on schedule as the Memphis Tigers and the Rice Owls are set to tip at 3:00 p.m. ET on Sunday at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls are crawling into this matchup hobbled by six consecutive losses, while the Tigers will bounce in with four consecutive wins.
Memphis can’t be too worried about heading out to take on Rice: they just beat Tulane at home, who had been dominant on their own court up to that point. Memphis came out on top against Tulane by a score of 68-56 on Thursday.
Dain Dainja was the offensive standout of the match as he dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten rebounds.
Meanwhile, Rice couldn’t handle South Florida on Tuesday and fell 69-64. The Owls were up 32-18 in the first but couldn’t hold on to the lead.
Rice’s loss came about despite a quality game from Denver Anglin, who had 17 points plus two steals.
Memphis has been performing incredibly well recently as they’ve won eight of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 16-4 record this season. As for Rice, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-10.
This contest is shaping up to be a blowout: Memphis just can’t miss this season, having made 47.1% of their field goals per game. It’s a different story for Rice, though, as they’ve only made 41.7% of their field goals this season. Given Memphis’ sizable advantage in that area, Rice will need to find a way to close that gap.
Looking forward, Memphis shouldn’t be too worried about this matchup, as the experts have them favored by 10.5 points. This contest will be their tenth straight as the favorites (so far over this stretch they are 4-5 against the spread).
Odds
Memphis is a big 10.5-point favorite against Rice, according to the latest college basketball odds.
The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Tigers as a 10-point favorite.

Another big game today, as the Deacs really cannot afford to lose any more home games this season. The Pitt Panthers have been as high as 5th in the NET rankings this season but have fallen almost 30 spots after a 4-game losing streak at the beginning of January. Wake may have their hands full with the backcourt duo of Jaland Lowe and Ishmael Leggett—the two combine for 34.1 points, 8.6 assists, 3.6 steals, and 10.0 rebounds per game. The Deacs have played great defense all season long and are at home—where they have one of the best records in the nation—so they should have the advantage in this one.

Princeton will be in front of their home fans on Friday, but a look at the spread shows they might need that home-court advantage. They and the Yale Bulldogs will face off in an Ivy battle at 5:00 p.m. ET at L. Stockwell Jadwin Gymnasium. The Tigers are strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 77.1 points per game this season.
Princeton is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Cornell just ended the team’s seven-game winning streak on Saturday. They took an 85-76 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Big Red. The Tigers didn’t live up to their potential and found themselves falling short of the advantage oddsmakers thought they had coming into the game.
Even though they lost, Princeton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. This was only their first loss (out of four games) when they hit their own glass that hard.
Meanwhile, Yale entered their tilt with Harvard on Saturday with four consecutive wins but they’ll enter their next game with five. They took their match with ease, bagging an 84-55 victory over the Crimson. The Bulldogs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won seven games by 21 points or more this season.
Princeton’s defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 14-5. As for Yale, they pushed their record up to 11-6 with the win, which was their seventh straight at home.
Friday’s contest is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Princeton has been dynamite from deep this season, having drained 37.8% of their threes per game. However, it’s not like Yale struggles in that department as they’ve made 38.4% of their threes this season. Given these competing strengths, it’ll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
While only Princeton took care of their fans the last time they played, neither team managed to cover. Going forward, Yale is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 2.5 points. This contest might not be the best time to bet Princeton against the spread since they’ve let bettors down the last six times they’ve played.
Odds
Yale is a slight 2.5-point favorite against Princeton, according to the latest college basketball odds.
The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 2.5-point spread, and stayed right there.
