  • Chris Finch reveals final piece to the Timberwolves’ puzzle

To those who do not follow the Minnesota Timberwolves closely, it may just look like this season has been one steady, consistent disappointment. While the results still pale in comparison to last year’s dream season, it has been plainly obvious that there has been a fair amount of progression and improvement for this group in certain areas.

Of course, there are still several question marks, and things do not get any easier for this team with the news of Donte DiVincenzo’s injury. But we would be disingenuous to say Chris Finch’s team is dealing with all the same problems they had a few months ago.

On Wednesday morning, Finch went on KFAN 100.3 to talk with host Paul Allen about the latest developments with his team. When asked about if he likes how the Timberwolves are progressing at the moment, Finch had plenty to say.

“I do like how it’s progressing,” he said. “I think offensively, we look way better. We’re scoring easier, we’re generating better shots, we’re playing with pace, guys are moving the ball, they’re understanding spacing … For me, it’s just about closing games now.”

The Timberwolves’ clutch time offense must improve

This is unquestionably Minnesota’s biggest issue right now, and it is great to hear Finch say it out loud. Just for the lowest-hanging fruit example, the Timberwolves have two losses to the Memphis Grizzlies by two points each in the last 12 days. The Wolves allowed the Grizz to rally from down six and nine points in the fourth quarter in those losses, and those two games are the only two of Memphis’ season where they have been down by six or more in the fourth and won.

Think I’m just picking out two specific examples? Go check Minnesota’s clutch time stats on offense. Per the NBA’s official statistics, the Timberwolves rank 29th in the league in clutch time offensive rating, and they currently hold the third-worst net rating in the clutch. It is clear that when things are close at the end, Minnesota is constantly in danger of blowing a lead or simply giving their opposition enough chances to pull out a win.

The Timberwolves have played the most clutch games of any team in the association this season, being involved in very few blowouts. In their 28 total clutch games, they hold just a 12-16 record. That stat is the cherry on top of what is clearly this team’s biggest challenge right now.

In recognizing this truth, Finch broke down why the Wolves are struggling to close games. “A variety of things,” he said. “Mistakes, execution, shot-making down the stretch. We’ve got to be a little bit better in all those categories. But we’ve been playing well. We’ve been able to control large parts of these games, and hopefully we can start finishing them off.”

In a surprising turn of events, Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch has revealed the final piece to the team’s puzzle. After weeks of speculation and rumors, Finch announced that the key to unlocking the team’s full potential lies in improving their defense.

“We have a talented group of players, but we need to focus on our defensive effort and execution in order to take the next step as a team,” Finch stated.

With this revelation, fans are eager to see how the Timberwolves will adjust their game plan and strategy moving forward. Will this newfound emphasis on defense lead to more wins and success for the team? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – the Timberwolves are ready to make some noise in the league.

    Against the spread

    BET NUGGETS -4.5 (-110).

The Timberwolves are 0-7-1 ATS in their last 8 home games. They’re also just 4-7 ATS in their last 11 games overall, allowing at least 114 points in 3 of their last 5.

The Nuggets have been surging, winning and covering 6 straight road games. They have scored at least 132 points in 3 of their last 4.

    Over/Under

    BET OVER 228.5 (-110).

The Nuggets have scored at least 118 points in 6 of their last 9 games, going 6-3 O/U, and allowed at least 113 in 3 of their last 5.

The Timberwolves have performed well offensively, too, scoring at least 115 points in 6 of their last 7 games, going 5-2 O/U. Considering those trends, take OVER 228.5 (-110).

The Denver Nuggets will be taking on the Minnesota Timberwolves in what promises to be an exciting matchup between two talented teams. The Nuggets are currently sitting in fourth place in the Western Conference with a record of 36-20, while the Timberwolves are in 10th place with a record of 22-34.

The odds for this game have the Nuggets as the favorites, with a -4.5 point spread. The over/under is set at 235.5 points.

In terms of picks and predictions, the Nuggets have been playing well lately and have a strong roster led by MVP candidate Nikola Jokic. They have a good chance of covering the spread and coming out with a win in this game. The Timberwolves, on the other hand, have been struggling as of late and may have a tough time keeping up with the Nuggets.

Overall, I predict that the Nuggets will come out on top in this game and cover the spread. The over/under is a bit trickier, but I would lean towards the over given the offensive firepower of both teams. It should be a high-scoring and entertaining game to watch.

  • Preview: Denver Nuggets play matinee game against Minnesota Timberwolves

It’s a midday game for the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves today. It is the third matchup this season between the division rivals with each team winning one game a piece. While the Nuggets are on a hot streak and look like a finals contender again, the Wolves haven’t enjoyed the same success. After trading Karl-Anthony Towns for Julius Randle in the offseason Minnesota has been underwhelming to say the least. Even superstar Anthony Edwards hasn’t looked as dominant of a player. Still, there’s plenty of time to right the ship. The Nuggets will need a full four quarters of effort if they are going to get a win on the road.

    The Essentials

Who: Denver Nuggets (28-16) at Minnesota Timberwolves (23-21)

    When: 1PM MST.

Where: Where Budgets Go To Die Center. Minneapolis, MN.

How to watch/listen: Denver Stiffs does not condone piracy (and honestly, if you can’t get this game on your TV then I assume it’s unplugged). Altitude TV, Altitude+, ABC, ESPN+, Altitude Radio 92.5 FM.

    Rival Blog: Canis Hoopus

    The Matchup

    Position Nuggets Wolves Advantage
PG Jamal Murray Mike Conley Nuggets
SG Russell Westbrook Anthony Edwards Wolves
SF Christian Braun Jaden McDaniels Even
PF Michael Porter Jr. Julius Randle Even
C Nikola Jokic Rudy Gobert Nuggets
Bench Aaron Gordon, Julian Strawther, DeAndre Jordan, Peyton Watson Naz Reid, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Rob Dillingham, Joe Ingles Even

Injury report: Vlatko Cancar – out (knee), DaRon Holmes II – out (achilles), Trey Alexander – out (G-League), Spencer Jones – out (G-League); Anthony Edwards – questionable (illness), Donte DiVincenzo – out (toe), Terrence Shannon Jr. – out (foot), Jesse Edwards – out (G-League), Tristen Newton – out (G-League).

    The Three Things

The thing to watch for: Who’s scoring the ball for Minnesota?

May 19, 2024; Denver, Colorado, USA; Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray (27) defends on Minnesota Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels (3) in the first quarter in game seven of the second round for the 2024 NBA playoffs at Ball Arena. Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Edwards is questionable with an illness and has a shortened recovery/prep window due to the early tip. Even if he goes, how much energy will he have? Outside of Ant, it’s been a struggle to find consistent scoring for Minnesota (or at least…consistent efficient scoring). Donte DiVincenzo looked like the guy to fill up the scoreboard when he stepped into Minnesota’s starting lineup, but he’s now out indefinitely with a toe injury. Randle can always get hot, but he’s just as likely to hurt you with his volume as he is to help. Jaden McDaniels seems to have the most recent chance to increase his shot volume so look for Christian Braun or Russell Westbrook to stay glued to him.

The thing to remember: Minnesota isn’t great at home

The Wolves are a strange team. They’ve actually got a better record on the road than they do at home where they are just .500. They also haven’t been all that great against Denver at home either. They barely escaped with a victory at Target Center earlier this season and lost two out of three there against the Nuggets in the playoffs last year. The early start probably plays to Minnesota’s advantage since they get to sleep in their own beds, but the Nuggets also flew in early yesterday and should be well rested.

    The thing to bet: Pass

I have a couple of rules I don’t like to sway from when it comes to sports betting, and one of those is I don’t bet NBA day games. Weird stuff happens in these games and they’re just too hard to predict for me.

The Denver Nuggets are set to face off against the Minnesota Timberwolves in a matinee game this weekend. Both teams are coming off of strong performances and will be looking to continue their winning streaks.

The Nuggets, led by star player Nikola Jokic, have been playing excellent basketball as of late. Jokic has been dominating on both ends of the court, averaging a double-double in points and rebounds. With his exceptional passing ability and scoring prowess, he will be a key player to watch in this matchup.

On the other side, the Timberwolves have been surprising many with their strong play this season. Karl-Anthony Towns has been leading the charge for the team, showcasing his scoring ability and defensive presence in the paint. With a talented roster surrounding him, the Timberwolves will be a tough opponent for the Nuggets.

This matinee game promises to be an exciting and competitive matchup between two talented teams. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as the Denver Nuggets take on the Minnesota Timberwolves.

If the Timberwolves keep playing like this, they’ll bump their record up to 23-21 in no time. On the other hand, the Mavericks will have to make due with a 23-21 record unless they turn things around (and fast).

    What to Know

The Minnesota Timberwolves are taking a road trip to face off against the Dallas Mavericks at 7:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday at American Airlines Center. The Mavericks have the home-court advantage, but the Timberwolves are expected to win by 2.5 points.

Last Monday, the Timberwolves didn’t have quite enough to beat the Grizzlies and fell 108-106. Minnesota was up 53-37 in the second but couldn’t hold on to the lead.

Despite their defeat, the Timberwolves saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Naz Reid, who went 11 for 20 en route to 29 points plus eight rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. Julius Randle, on the other hand, was considerably less helpful: he went 0-7 from long range.

Meanwhile, the point spread may have favored the Mavericks last Monday, but the final result did not. They fell to the Hornets 110-105. The contest was a 55-55 toss-up at halftime, but Dallas couldn’t quite close it out.

The Mavericks might have lost, but man, Daniel Gafford was a machine: he dropped a double-double on 31 points and 15 rebounds. Gafford’s performance made up for a slower game against the Thunder on Friday. The team also got some help courtesy of Kyrie Irving, who scored 33 points plus three steals.

The Mavericks struggled to work together and finished the game with only 19 assists. They were dismantled by their opponents in that department as the Hornets posted 28.

Minnesota’s loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 22-21. As for Dallas, their defeat was their sixth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 23-20.

The Timberwolves didn’t have too much breathing room in their matchup against the Mavericks in their previous matchup back in December of 2024, but they still walked away with a 105-99 victory. Will the Timberwolves repeat their success, or do the Mavericks have a better game plan this time around? We’ll find out soon enough.

    Odds

Minnesota is a slight 2.5-point favorite against Dallas, according to the latest NBA odds.

The line has drifted a bit towards the Timberwolves, as the game opened with the Timberwolves as a 1-point favorite.

    The over/under is 216.5 points.

  • Minnesota Timberwolves turn back a final push by Dallas

DALLAS – If there was ever a time for the Timberwolves to face Dallas on the road, it was Wednesday. Luka Doncic was still out because of a calf injury he suffered when the teams last met on Christmas Day. Center Dereck Lively is also out for multiple months because of a foot injury. Klay Thompson was also watching from the bench because of an ankle sprain.

The Wolves were down Donte DiVincenzo (toe sprain) but had the rest of their roster available to stop a two-game slide.

The Wolves gutted out a 115-114 victory after building a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and hanging on down the stretch. The Wolves couldn’t secure rebounds in the final minutes and allowed Dallas to cut their lead to 112-111 with 22.3 seconds to play.

The Wolves opened the fourth by extending their four-point lead to 12 on a 13-5 run that featured a pair of three-pointers from Naz Reid and another from Nickeil Alexander-Walker. But after some frustrations with the officiating — Reid drew a technical in the fourth quarter — Dallas cut the lead to 101-100 before a 5-0 Wolves run. The Wolves got a pair of offensive rebounds on one possession before Edwards ended it with a layup.

On a night Edwards was inefficient (6-for-19, 21 points) the Wolves got a needed lift from Jaden McDaniels and Mike Conley. McDaniels stuffed the stat sheet with 26 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Conley played one of his best games of the season with 18 points, eight assists, five rebounds.

The Wolves’ starting lineup again had a rough beginning offensively as it opened 1-for-6. The Wolves’ saving grace was an 8-for-9 start from the free-throw line in the first. But that quick whistle from the officials had a flip side — the refs called fouls early and often on the Wolves. Dallas was in the penalty less than six minutes into the first, and McDaniels was on the bench in foul trouble.

The shorthanded Mavericks also couldn’t score, and a sleepy first quarter ended with the Wolves trailing 22-17. They were 4-for-16 in the quarter.

After Dallas had an 11-0 run toward the end of the first quarter, a blended Wolves lineup finally got some offense going in the second quarter. McDaniels got out in transition multiple times for 11 first-half points while Reid had six off the bench in a 12-4 Wolves spurt that gave them a 40-38 lead and forced a Dallas timeout with 5:23 to play. The Wolves were 13-for-21 in the second quarter after shaking off the first-quarter rust, but Dallas also picked it up offensively in the second behind 16 points from P.J. Washington. The Mavericks shot 50% in the first half. Finch had said that when DiVincenzo went out they likely would have to extend the rotation to nine players, but he ended up playing only eight in the first half, and the eighth, Rob Dillingham, played only seven mintues. Edwards was 1-for-6 in the first half.

In a nail-biting finish, the Minnesota Timberwolves held off a late surge by the Dallas Mavericks to secure a crucial victory. • Mavericks’ Kyrie Irving hits huge career milestone during Timberwolves game

The Dallas Mavericks are taking on the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night in a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals. Both teams have been struggling a little bit this season, as the Mavericks entered the game at 23-20 and the Timberwolves came in at 22-21.

The Mavericks are still playing without their superstar Luka Doncic, who is still out due to a calf injury that he suffered on Christmas Day. However, Kyrie Irving recently returned to the lineup after missing a few games due to a back injury. On Wednesday night, Irving reached the 18,000-point mark for his career with a tough bucket in the first quarter.

Irving has had a relatively quiet first half, scoring just eight points on 3-for-5 shooting as the Mavericks trail 55-53 at the break. Instead, it has been P.J. Washington who has carried much of the load offensively, scoring 16 points on 14 field goal attempts. The Mavericks are looking to continue their dominance over the Timberwolves after their convincing win over Minnesota in last year’s playoffs even as Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert seek revenge for the loss.

Irving has had a couple of his biggest games of the season since Doncic has been out, even though it seems like Wednesday night is not going to be one of those nights. He scored 46 points in a Dec. 28 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers and came into this game off of a 33-point game in a loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Monday. In order for the Mavericks to get the win in this one, they will need Irving to pick up his production in the second half.

This is a big game for the Mavericks against a team that they are competing with to get out of the play-in picture in the Western Conference. The Mavericks are just one game ahead of the Timberwolves at the moment, and Minnesota can even the standings with a win on the road on Wednesday night. However, if the Mavericks can get a win, they would get even closer to passing the Los Angeles Lakers for that coveted No. 6 spot in the conference standings.

During the Mavericks’ game against the Timberwolves last night, Kyrie Irving reached a huge career milestone by surpassing 25,000 career points. Irving, known for his incredible scoring ability and clutch performances, achieved this feat in just his 11th NBA season.

Irving’s scoring prowess has been on full display throughout his career, as he has consistently been one of the top offensive players in the league. From his incredible handles to his ability to finish at the rim, Irving has been a nightmare for defenders to try and contain.

Reaching 25,000 career points is no small feat, and it solidifies Irving’s place among the all-time greats in NBA history. Mavericks fans and basketball enthusiasts alike can’t help but be in awe of Irving’s scoring ability and his impact on the game.

Congratulations to Kyrie Irving on this incredible milestone, and here’s to many more memorable moments in his career. Mavericks fans can’t wait to see what else he has in store for the rest of the season.

  • Will Timberwolves elevate unproven guard to starter in hopes of easing Anthony Edwards’ frustrations?

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been searching for offensive scoring help all season. Anthony Edwards has been playing out of his mind, but defenses are starting to key in on him.

Coach Chris Finch has been incorporating different lineups and rotations to try and provide an internal spark for the team on offense.

One bright spot as of late has been the impressive play from rookie point guard Rob Dillingham.  In the past three games, he is averaging 10 points on 56 percent shooting. More importantly, in the last game against the Memphis Grizzlies he had a fantastic showing. He finished with a +16 in a losing effort for the Wolves in just 17 minutes on the floor.

With Mike Conley’s lingering injuries this season, it has clearly affected his play. Because Finch is trying new lineups, perhaps it is time to put Dillingham in the starting lineup and have the veteran Conley come off the bench with the second unit.

The only reason Conley is starting is because of Donte DiVincenzo‘s toe injury that will sideline him indefinitely.

“Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo is out indefinitely due to left big toe injury and will receive additional opinion, sources tell ESPN. DiVincenzo’s foot has been placed in a boot. He was averaging 17.5 points, 4.7 assists, 42% shooting on 3s as a starter in last 6 games,” ESPN’s Shams Charania posted.

This is the perfect time to give the Dillingham a shot in the starting lineup and initiate some new energy into the group. There is no set timetable on how long DiVincenzo will be out. In addition to that, the +/- stats have proven that the team plays better with him on the floor. He has earned the opportunity to not only start, but to play more minutes as well.

MORE WOLVES NEWS: What channel is Mavs vs. Timberwolves on today? Time, TV schedule, live stream to watch Wednesday NBA game

The Minnesota Timberwolves have a big decision to make as they navigate through a tumultuous season. Rookie guard Anthony Edwards, the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, has expressed frustration with his role on the team and his lack of playing time. With Edwards eager to prove himself and make an impact, the Timberwolves may be considering promoting an unproven guard to the starting lineup in order to appease their young star.

One potential candidate for this promotion is rookie guard Jaden McDaniels, who has shown flashes of potential in limited minutes this season. McDaniels, a versatile defender with a smooth shooting stroke, could provide the scoring punch and defensive intensity that the Timberwolves need to compete in the tough Western Conference.

By elevating McDaniels to a starting role, the Timberwolves would not only be addressing Edwards’ concerns but also giving themselves a chance to evaluate their young talent and potentially unlock a new dimension to their lineup. However, this move comes with its own set of risks, as McDaniels may not be ready for the increased minutes and responsibilities that come with being a starter in the NBA.

Only time will tell if the Timberwolves decide to make this bold move, but one thing is for certain – they need to find a solution to ease Edwards’ frustrations and help him reach his full potential.
