  • Big Bash League 2024-25: Mitch Owen’s century leads Hobart Hurricanes to title

Fix today. Protect forever. Secure your devices with the #1 malware removal and protection software

Mitchell Owen smashed a scintillating 39-ball century to lead Hobart Hurricanes to their maiden Big Bash League title.

Owen’s century, which was the joint-fastest in BBL history, helped the hosts blaze to a seven-wicket victory over David Warner’s Sydney Thunder with 30 balls to spare.

The 23-year-old Tasmanian opener clobbered 11 sixes as Thunder’s bowlers wilted under the onslaught.

Owen departed for 108 off 42 balls to leave Matthew Wade (32 off 17 balls) and Ben McDermott (18 off 12 balls) to steer Hurricanes to the trophy in front of a jubilant home support at Ninja Stadium in Hobart.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” said Owen. “I was doing what I’ve tried to do all competition – get us off to a good start so we could take it easy in the middle and thankfully I came off.”

Thunder were going well when openers Jason Sangha (67) and Warner (48) shared a 97-run opening stand before both were dismissed by Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis (3-23).

Once again, fast bowler Riley Meredith, who has consistently bowled at speeds in excess of 90mph throughout the tournament, impressed with three middle-order wickets, including England’s Sam Billings, who was bowled for 20.

England’s Chris Jordan was expensive, finishing with 0-47 from four overs for Hurricanes, but a total of 182-7 was never going to be enough once Owen found his groove.

Victory was much deserved for Hurricanes, who finished top of the regular season table. It leaves Melbourne Stars as the only team yet to win a BBL title.

The Big Bash League 2024-25 season came to an electrifying conclusion as Hobart Hurricanes clinched the title with a stellar performance from their star player, Mitch Owen.

In the final match against Sydney Sixers, Owen stole the show with a breathtaking century, guiding his team to a memorable victory. His innings was filled with powerful strokes and impeccable timing, leaving the opposition bowlers helpless.

The Hurricanes, under Owen’s leadership, put up a massive total on the board, setting a daunting target for the Sixers. Despite a valiant effort from the opposition, they fell short as the Hurricanes bowlers put up a disciplined performance to seal the win.

Owen’s century will go down as one of the best in Big Bash League history, showcasing his immense talent and composure under pressure. His contribution was instrumental in leading the Hurricanes to their maiden title in the tournament.

Congratulations to Mitch Owen and the Hobart Hurricanes on their well-deserved victory in the Big Bash League 2024-25 season. Here’s to more thrilling cricketing action in the seasons to come! #BBL25 #MitchOwen #HobartHurricanes #Champions

  • Jannik Sinner wins second Australian Open tennis title | Tennis News

Fix today. Protect forever. Secure your devices with the #1 malware removal and protection software

Jannik Sinner has retained his Australian Open title with an emphatic 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Alexander Zverev, breaking new ground for Italian tennis and leaving his German rival smarting after a third Grand Slam final defeat.

World number one Sinner became Italy’s first player to win three Grand Slam crowns on Sunday, moving past Nicola Pietrangeli who won back-to-back men’s titles at Roland Garros in 1959-60.

“We worked a lot to be in this position again,” Sinner said at the trophy presentation, paying tribute to his team.

“It’s amazing to share this feeling with all of you, it’s amazing to achieve things and share it with you guys.

“Keep believing in yourself,” Sinner said to the defeated German. “We know how strong you are as a player and person, and you can lift a trophy.”

World number one brushes aside doping concerns

A year after mowing down Daniil Medvedev in five sets for his first major trophy, Sinner sapped his second Melbourne Park final of all drama by applying suffocating pressure and clinical execution.

Under the lights at Rod Laver Arena, he captured the decisive break in the sixth game when Zverev pushed a forehand long.

Arguably, the German’s spirit had already been broken by an unlucky net cord that turned the second-set tiebreak in Sinner’s favour.

Zverev went through the motions but gave up match point with a hopeful forehand that fell well wide of the line, allowing Sinner to seal the win with a backhand passing shot.

Sinner raised his arms in triumph as the crowd hailed the win, and then he clambered into the terraces to embrace his entourage.

Hanging over Sinner’s head has been a World Anti-Doping Agency appeal against his exoneration, with the global body seeking a long ban. He denies knowingly doping.

A hearing is scheduled at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for April.

He cast all the worries aside to notch a 19th career title and extend his incredible winning streak to 21 matches.

Sinner breaks back Zverev with ease

At 23, Sinner celebrates a title that cements his place as the game’s pre-eminent hard court player.

He was relentless from the get-go, holding to love twice in the first set before his first blemish on serve in the fifth game.

Zverev had to slog to save early break points and was second best in the rallies.

He grumbled to the chair umpire about a racquet not being re-strung at the change of ends when trailing 4-3.

He was broken in the next game while stranded at the net as Sinner blasted a forehand that nearly knocked the racquet out of Zverev’s grip.

Superb net play and a sharp backhand volley gave Sinner three set points and he converted the first with an ace.

Though outplayed in every facet, Zverev held on white-knuckled to take the second set into a tiebreak.

It was level pegging at 4-4 when the match turned viciously away from him as Sinner fired into the net cord and had the ball dribble over.

Sinner thumped down a huge serve to raise two set points and converted the first, firing a furious forehand winner from the baseline.

Gutted, Zverev smashed his racquet as he returned to his chair and whacked it again after sitting down.

    ‘Best player in the world’

The sting was entirely gone from the match as Zverev dropped serve to trail 4-2 in the third with a wild forehand that sailed over the baseline.

There would be no last stand from Zverev, nor any wobble from Sinner who did not cough up a single break point for the match as he savoured a third helping of Grand Slam glory.

“It sucks standing here next to this thing [trophy] and not being able to touch it, I’ll be honest,” Zverev said after the match.

“But congratulations to Jannik. You more than deserve it. You’re the best player in the world by far.

“I was hoping that I could be more competitive today, but you’re just too good. It’s as simple as that.”

Zverev was heckled before making his runner-up speech, with a person in the crowd repeatedly yelling – “Australia believes Olga and Brenda”.

In June last year, Zverev’s lawyers said he had agreed to a settlement after the mother of his child, Brenda Patea, accused him of physical abuse and a German court closed the case.

Zverev repeatedly rejected the allegations by Patea.

In January 2023, the ATP, citing insufficient evidence, closed an investigation that was launched after another ex-girlfriend, tennis player Olga Sharypova, accused Zverev of domestic abuse.

  • No.1 seeds Siniakova, Townsend battle to Australian Open doubles title

Fix today. Protect forever. Secure your devices with the #1 malware removal and protection software

No.1 seeds Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend battled to the women’s doubles title at the 2025 Australian Open, holding off No.3 seeds Hsieh Su-wei and Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3 in a gripping final on Sunday.

Siniakova and Townsend lived up to their top-seeded billing on Rod Laver Arena, but they had to shake off a second-set comeback by Hsieh and Ostapenko before taking the match after 2 hours and 27 minutes of play.

“I’m happy with the way that we fought mentally and were able to fight through those tough moments and kind of overcome,” Townsend said in the champions’ press conference.

Increasing their totals: Holding one of the most impressive doubles résumés in the Open Era, Siniakova has now won 10 Grand Slam titles in women’s doubles. She is the first player to amass 10 women’s doubles Slams since Martina Hingis captured her 10th at 2015 Wimbledon.

“It’s really nice that you guys are still saying it and kind of remembering it,” Siniakova said. “I’m just, like, professional athlete. I’m just, like, working hard and trying to get more and more. When you guys come and say, ‘Oh, you did this,’ I’m really excited. So, yeah, it sounds perfect.”

The Czech’s Grand Slam trophy haul includes seven titles with Barbora Krejcikova, one with Coco Gauff, and now two with Townsend. This is her third Australian Open title, having won here in 2022 and 2023 with Krejcikova. Siniakova has won 29 WTA doubles titles overall.

Townsend has also been rapidly increasing her title count of late. The American has now won eight career WTA doubles titles, two of which are Slams, and seven of which have come after her return from maternity leave in 2022.

This was also Townsend’s first match on Rod Laver Arena since she won the Junior Australian Open title in 2012.

“It’s amazing that when you go out to these courts, you hold memories, and you remember what those feelings are,” said Townsend. “Being able to step back on the court and practice there, it kind of brought back those memories and how it felt, the little girl with braces and bows in her hair. It was really special.”

On the rise: Overall, it has been a whirlwind ascent to the top of the doubles hierarchy for the team of WTA Doubles World No.1 Siniakova and fifth-ranked Townsend, who have only been a regular tandem for eight months.

Siniakova and Townsend won last year’s Wimbledon title in their first Grand Slam event as a pairing — which was also Townsend’s first Slam as a pro. They followed up with a semifinal showing at the 2024 US Open before hoisting another major trophy on Sunday. They have gone 15-1 in their three Slams as a duo.

“I’m really enjoying being able to have this success with her because doubles is a partnership, and we’re a team,” said Townsend. “We win together; we lose together.

“I look at it as a part of history, where it’s nobody in our generation that is as decorated or that has accomplished the things that [Siniakova] has. So to be able to be on the same side as her, it’s an honor. I’ll be happy to continue to rack up those slams with her.”

Match moments: Still, it was an intense showdown before the top seeds took the crown. Former WTA Doubles World No.1 Hsieh was trying to defend her title (she won the 2024 Australian Open with Elise Mertens) and Ostapenko was trying to win her second straight Slam (she won the 2024 US Open with Lyudmyla Kichenok).

Siniakova and Townsend were dominant on return as they eased through the first set, where they had break points in all four of their opponents’ services games. Things were less cut-and-dry in the second set, but Townsend still served for a straight-sets win at 6-3, 5-4.

Things got tricky, though, as Hsieh and Ostapenko started to come up big in rallies, and they broke for 5-5 without facing championship point. The teams moved into a tiebreak, where Hsieh and Ostapenko extended their momentum. Hsieh fired a return winner to take the second set.

In the first game of the third set, Siniakova hit three double faults and was promptly broken, however she and Townsend quickly broke back to stop the skid. The top seeds held firm and at last took control for good by breaking the Hsieh serve for 5-3.

Helped by exceptional volleying from Townsend, Siniakova raced through her service game to reach triple championship point. One last forecourt putaway by Townsend converted their second match point, and the Czech-American duo were major champions once more.

In a thrilling showdown at the Australian Open, No.1 seeds Barbora Siniakova and Taylor Townsend battled their way to the doubles title. The dynamic duo displayed incredible teamwork and skill throughout the tournament, defeating tough opponents and showcasing their dominance on the court.

Siniakova and Townsend’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, as they displayed impeccable shot-making, strong communication, and a relentless competitive spirit. Their chemistry and synergy were evident in every match they played, as they seamlessly worked together to outmaneuver their opponents and secure victory.

The final match was a true test of their abilities, as they faced off against a formidable opponent. However, Siniakova and Townsend rose to the occasion, showcasing their resilience and determination to come out on top and claim the coveted Australian Open doubles title.

Their victory is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and talent, and solidifies their status as a force to be reckoned with in the world of doubles tennis. Congratulations to Siniakova and Townsend on their well-deserved win!

UFC middleweight prospect Bo Nickal seems to have let a major cat out of the bag.

In a video on his YouTube channel, the multi-time NCAA champion stated that UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria will be defending his title against Alexander Volkanovski in a rematch of the former’s title-winning performance in February 2024. The fight is reportedly set for April in the UFC 314 main event.

When reminded by his co-host that the news hadn’t been announced, Nickal said, “No, it’s official. I know that for a fact. I don’t know that it was announced for a fact, but I know it’s happening. I’m announcing it.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if he hears from UFC President Dana White or Hunter Campbell after this episode.

In any case, if Nickal is accurate, UFC 314 is looking really strong. The card is already expected to feature Gilbert Burns taking on big-time prospect Michael Morales, Yan Xiaonan clashing with Virna Jandiroba, and Dominick Reyes fighting Nikita Krylov.

If these fights stick, UFC 314 would have eight ranked fighters in action on the show’s main card, and we don’t yet appear to have a co-main event in place. The UFC could opt to bring Merab Dvalishvili back to defend his title in a rematch with Sean O’Malley.

Alternatively, O’Malley could face Cory Sandhagen, with the winner potentially earning the next title shot. O’Malley vs. Petr Yan 2 is another intriguing possibility for the co-main event.

If you’re looking for a fifth fight on the UFC 314 main card, Nickal also said, “I might fight on that card. That’s the card I’m trying to fight on; April in Miami.”

Nickal is seemingly in line to face a ranked fighter in his next outing. Nickal vs. No. 15 Michel Pereira or No. 13 Jack Hermansson makes sense. If the UFC wants to push Nickal even higher in his eighth professional fight, they could potentially consider No. 11 Paulo Costa.

The build for Nickal-Costa would be wildly entertaining.

    What’s Next For the UFC?

Next up for the UFC is the trip to Saudi Arabia. The card has taken some hits in the past 48 hours, but the main event and co-main event are still set to go.

In the co-main event, Shara Magomedov faces his toughest test when he takes on Michael “Venom” Page. In the main event, Israel Adesanya faces Nassourdine Imavov.

Updated UFC Saudi Arabia Fight Card:

    • Israel Adesanya vs. Nassourdine Imavov – Middleweight (185 lbs)
    • Sharabutdin Magomedov vs. Michael Page – Middleweight (185 lbs)
    • Sergei Pavlovich vs. Jairzinho Rozenstruik – Heavyweight (265 lbs)
    • Said Nurmagomedov vs. Vinicius Oliveira – Bantamweight (135 lbs)
    • Ikram Aliskerov vs. André Muniz – Middleweight (185 lbs) – CANCELED
    • Muhammad Naimov vs. Kaan Ofli – Featherweight (145 lbs)

  • Florida coach Todd Golden cleared in Title IX investigation

Fix today. Protect forever. Secure your devices with the #1 malware removal and protection software

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida has cleared Gators men’s basketball coach Todd Golden following a four-month Title IX investigation into allegations of sexual exploitation, sexual harassment and stalking.

The school released a statement Monday saying no evidence was found and ended its investigation amid No. 5 Florida’s best season in a decade, with the Gators having won 18 of their first 20 games.

“The University of Florida takes these matters seriously and works deliberately to ensure that due process is upheld for everyone,” university spokesman Steve Orlando said in a statement. “After a thorough investigation that included dozens of interviews over the past months, the University of Florida has found no evidence that Todd Golden violated Title IX. The Title IX office has closed its investigation.”

Golden previously sidestepped chances to deny the allegations “out of the respect to the process” and threatened legal action, presumably against his publicly unnamed accusers. He also recently ripped proceedings that are supposed to be confidential.

“I am just frustrated and disappointed that a Title IX mechanism that is created to protect both sides during a situation like this — that confidentiality and privacy continues to be abused,” Golden said earlier this month after assistant coach Taurean Green was accused of sexual assault in another Title IX case.

The school’s University Athletic Association supported Golden throughout the investigation and backed his confidentiality comment following the case’s dismissal.

“The UAA acknowledges the completion of the review,” the UAA said in a statement. “We take these matters seriously and understand the need for the process to be conducted with strict confidentiality and discretion.

“Throughout this process, Coach Golden has demonstrated tremendous focus and professionalism, and we commend him for that. As the Gators move forward, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting a championship experience with integrity.”

The complaint against Golden accused him of sending photos and videos of his genitalia, making unwanted sexual advances on Instagram and requesting sexual favors.

Title IX is designed to protect students from discrimination, including sexual harassment. Florida began outsourcing its Title IX investigations in 2023 to Grand River Solutions, a private firm based in California.

The 39-year-old Golden signed a two-year contract extension last March that included a $1 million raise and brought his annually salary to $4 million. The deal runs through the 2029-30 season. He is 58-31 in three seasons.

His contract prohibits “romantic, amorous and/or sexual relationships between any coach or other employee of the Association and any student athlete or other person subject to the supervision, control and/or authority of such coach or other employee.”

It also says the university can take disciplinary action if the coach acts in a manner “that has an ‘adverse effect’ or causes an ‘adverse reflection,’ on the reputation, mission and/or interests” of the athletic department or the university.

The case against Green, meanwhile, is still ongoing. Green is accused of kissing an athletic department employee and trying to put his hand down her pants in March 2024, according to a complaint reviewed by ESPN.

The woman said she did not report the alleged incident at the time in part because of Green’s status. Green, who won NCAA championships as a player with the Gators in 2006 and 2007, joined the basketball staff in 2022 following a professional basketball career.

The woman told ESPN she came forward after Title IX investigators working on Golden’s case asked to interview her last fall about Golden’s interactions with female athletes. She said that inquiry made her realize there could be concerns about a pattern of behavior within the program.

Florida coach Todd Golden cleared in Title IX investigation

Florida Gators basketball coach Todd Golden has been cleared of any wrongdoing in a Title IX investigation, the university announced today. The investigation was launched after allegations of misconduct were made against Golden by a former student-athlete.

The university conducted a thorough investigation into the matter and found no evidence to support the allegations against Golden. In a statement released by the university, President John Thrasher expressed confidence in Golden and his commitment to upholding the values of the university.

Golden, who has been with the Gators since 2019, expressed his gratitude for the support he received throughout the investigation. He is now focused on preparing for the upcoming basketball season and leading his team to success on and off the court.

Fans and supporters of the Florida Gators can now rest assured that their beloved coach has been cleared of any wrongdoing and can continue to lead the team with integrity and professionalism.

Actor Matthew McConaughey showed off his lifelong Washington Redskins fandom on Sunday as the team, now known as the Commanders, got set to play in the NFC Championship.

“Hailing since 1974,” he captioned the post on X.

While it appeared to surprise fans of the “Interstellar” star that he would be a fan of Washington, McConaughey talked about his support for the NFL team in 2014.

He told GQ magazine he became a fan because of old Western movies. He said he “rooted for the Indians” and that because he liked hamburgers, he liked the Redskins because of their linebacker Chris Hanburger.

At the time, he also expressed support for keeping the Redskins nickname. Then-team owner Daniel Snyder had vowed not to change the name but did in 2020 amid a summer of racial tension in the U.S.

“What interests me is how quickly it got pushed into the social consciousness,” he told the magazine at the time. “We were all fine with it since the 1930s, and all of a sudden we go, ‘No, gotta change it?’ It seems like when the first levee breaks, everybody gets on board. I know a lot of Native Americans don’t have a problem with it, but they’re not going to say, ‘No, we really want the name.’ That’s not how they’re going to use their pulpit.

“It’s like my feeling about gun control: ‘I get it. You have the right to have guns. But look, let’s forget that right. Let’s forget the pleasure you get safely on your range, because it’s in the wrong hands in other places.’”

The Redskins name is still a hot-button issue for fans of the franchise. It appeared the old logo will be honored in some way as the franchise looks to build a new stadium on the old RFK site.

We’re officially down to four teams. After an exhilarating divisional round of the NFL postseason last weekend, the NFC and AFC Championship games are set.

In the first matchup, division rivals go head-to-head as NFC East champion Philadelphia takes on Washington. The Eagles are led by the league’s best defense, holding opponents to just 17.6 points per game. Will that dominance continue against Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, arguably the best rookie in NFL history?

The Kansas City Chiefs will host the Buffalo Bills in a game featuring two elite quarterbacks in Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. Mahomes owns a 3-0 postseason record against his counterpart. Could this be the year Allen breaks through and takes Buffalo to the Big Game for the first time since 1994?

All of that will be answered Sunday in the NFC and AFC Championships.

The Commanders will have their work cut out for them as they try to contain Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley, who’s coming off a standout divisional-round performance.

On the other side, the Eagles should be worried about 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year front-runner Daniels, who led Washington to a regular-season victory over Philly with a stellar five-touchdown showing.

  • Kylian Mbappé after first Real Madrid hat trick: Title means more

Kylian Mbappé said he’s more concerned about Real Madrid winning the league than finishing as LaLiga’s top scorer after grabbing his first hat trick for the club in their 3-0 win at Real Valladolid on Saturday.

Mbappé opened the scoring in the 30th minute — after a smart one-two with Jude Bellingham — before adding a second goal in the 57th minute and then converting a penalty in added time.

The result left Madrid top of the LaLiga table on 49 points, four points clear of second-placed Atlético Madrid, who drew 1-1 with Villarreal earlier on Saturday.

“I’m happy with the hat trick, but I’m more happy with the win,” Mbappé told Real Madrid TV. “It was very important to win today. After Atleti’s result, there was more pressure.”

Mbappé has now scored 15 league goals this season — 22 in all competitions — and is on a red-hot streak of eight goals in his last five games.

Speaking earlier this week, teammates Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo said they wanted to ensure Mbappé ended the season as Spain’s leading goal scorer, or Pichichi.

“Rodrygo and I are going to do all that we can for Mbappé to be top scorer in every competition, because that’s why he came here,” Vinícius said.

“That’s nice, but I could say I need to help them too,” Mbappé responded on Saturday after his treble. “We all want the team to win. If I’m top scorer, great — I’ve done it a lot of times in my career — but winning the league is the most important thing for me.”

Coach Carlo Ancelotti called Mbappé “the best centre-forward in the world” last weekend.

“I said the first day here that I can play in all three positions in attack,” Mbappé said, when asked about playing centrally.

“My adaptation is over for sure. I feel good, with my movements, and my teammates, you can see it on the pitch.”

“[Mbappé] has been playing well for a while,” Ancelotti said in his post-match news conference. “He scored three goals for the first time. He’s contributing a lot. He found his rhythm a couple of months ago. It’s a plus for us. He’s a player who has a lot of quality.”
