Stocks rose Monday as major tech names outperformed to start the week, while traders looked past the latest U.S. tariff threat from President Donald Trump.
The market remains jittery on a mix of inflation worry coupled with concern over how Trump’s plan for tariffs could adversely affect the U.S. economy.
Trump told reporters on Sunday that he’s planning to announce a blanket 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports on Monday. Trump did not specify when the tariffs would be imposed and noted that he would also issue retaliatory tariffs on countries that tax U.S. imports. The news comes after Trump’s previously announced duties on China.
Steel and aluminum stocks popped. U.S. Steel and Nucor were up more than 3.5% and 5.5%, respectively. Cleveland-Cliffs climbed more than 17%, and Alcoa traded 3% higher.
Shares of chipmakers also traded higher as sentiment appeared to improve after the late January sell-off in technology stocks, fueled by the concerns around the emergence of Chinese AI startup DeepSeek. Nvidia gained 3.5%, while Broadcom and Micron rose by 4.5% and roughly 4%, respectively. Megacap tech names Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft were also each higher.
“The volatility around DeepSeek and concerns over tariffs do not derail our positive outlook on risk assets, especially in the U.S. Over the short term, we expect lingering volatility on tariff headlines and potential April bill passage in the U.S., but we keep 6,500 as S&P 500 year-end target,” JPMorgan head of cross asset strategy Fabio Bassi said in a note to clients.
The threat of more tariffs comes ahead of a slew of economic data this week. The January consumer price index report is due out Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. ET, followed by initial weekly jobless claims and the producer price index on Thursday. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will also speak before Congress on Tuesday morning.

Savannah Guthrie opened Today on Thursday alongside Craig Melvin from the comfort of Studio 1A, but it wasn’t long before she was squirming in her seat.
The hosts were at the helm of the NBC show as they read the headlines before turning to a colleague who was in a far less cozy environment.
Savannah and Craig winced as they introduced Dylan Dreyer who was braving the freezing cold weather on the plaza in New York.

She was wrapped up against the wintery front which was sweeping across the midwest and east coast of America.
Dylan confirmed: “It’s worse than it looks,” before detailing the nasty weather report.
Savannah couldn’t help but admit she felt “guilt” over Dylan being outside and urged her to come in for a cup of hot chocolate.
Dylan is no stranger to putting herself in extreme weather conditions in her role as a meteorologist.
She previously said: “I’m 100 percent committed to my job and I love it,” and she adores traveling around the globe for exciting, and sometimes dangerous, assignments.
“We didn’t think we wanted kids at all,” she told HELLO! in an exclusive interview. “We were living in New York City, traveling whenever we wanted to, doing whatever we wanted, and then suddenly it sort of came to us both.
We were like ‘let’s have kids’. Both of us obviously love it.”
As for if she would try for a girl with her husband, Dylan quipped that with her track record, it was likely she would welcome another boy instead. “Don’t think Brian and I haven’t had that conversation,” Dylan told TODAY.com. “But it’s like, no, we are so done. I know my luck, and it would be a fourth boy!”
Not to mention where she would put the new addition to the family.
“I’ve got all three kids in one room,” Dylan quipped. “Four just seems crazy to me.”
The number three also holds a special place in both Dylan and Brian’s hearts as she explained to HELLO!: “When we decided to have children, I used to always want three. I grew up with two brothers, my husband is one of three. Three just feels right for us now.”

Stock futures rose Monday night after U.S. President Donald Trump paused planned tariffs on goods from Canada, just hours after a reprieve was also announced on planned tariffs against Mexico.
A flurry of recent announcements around Trump’s long-awaited tariff plans have put investors on edge.
Stocks are coming off of a volatile trading session, in which the major averages made a striking turnaround after an initial global sell-off. At its session low on Monday, the 30-stock Dow fell more than 600 points, or nearly 1.5%, after Trump signed an order over the weekend to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, plus a 10% levy on China. Investor sentiment turned around on Monday afternoon, however, after Trump said his duty on Mexican goods would be would be paused for one month.
Ultimately, the major averages ended Monday well off their lows of the day, but they still booked losses. The Dow slipped 0.28%, while the S&P 500 fell 0.76%. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.2%.
“We are in a bull market fueled by a strong U.S. consumer and rising corporate profitability. Until something cracks with this narrative, I believe dips are buyable,” said Ross Mayfield, investment strategist at Baird. “Investors should prepare for more market volatility related to trade uncertainty, but we think the overall backdrop for investors remains quite solid.”
Mayfield said he thinks that China tariffs will likely remain in place as they did during the first Trump administration, but this time around, the White House views “trade as a means to exert non-trade concessions.”
Elsewhere, a huge earnings week awaits investors. Alphabet, Merck and PepsiCo are on the docket for Tuesday. Amazon and Eli Lilly are among the names that will report later this week.
On the economic front, the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey for December is due on Tuesday, as well as durable orders. The main event this week will be Friday’s January nonfarm payrolls report, which will add further clarity to the employment picture.

Boston University plays Harvard in the opening round at TD Garden
February has arrived and with it comes one of Boston’s most iconic college sports events: the annual Men’s Beanpot, now marking its 72nd year. The ice hockey tournament pits four major greater Boston college teams against one another.
The 2025 Dunkin’ Beanpot begins Monday, February 3. The No. 10 Boston University men’s hockey team will take on the tournament’s only nonconference opponent when they play Harvard at 5 pm at TD Garden. The two teams met earlier this season in an October 19 exhibition game: a 2-2 nailbiter shoot-out.
Following Monday’s semifinal matchup, reigning champion Northeastern will battle No. 1 Boston College at 8 pm in a top-billed matchup. The winners of each game will return on Monday, February 10, at 7:30 pm to crown a champion, with the losers playing a consolation game, at 4:30 pm. “I don’t think it matters how any of the four teams are doing throughout the course of the year. This tournament takes on a life of its own,” BU head coach Jay Pandolfo (CAS’96) said during the January 27 Beanpot Media Day. “You can’t replicate this tournament anywhere else.”
Here’s what you need to know about each team heading into the semifinals:
Boston University
The Terriers have had an up-and-down season to date. Looking to fill the glaring vacancy left by last season’s departing point leaders Macklin Celebrini, winner of the 2024 Hobey Baker Award (given to the top NCAA men’s ice hockey player), and Lane Hutson, the team reloaded with a crop of new talent, including eight freshmen and two transfers. The team stands at 14-9-1 on the season, ranking third in Hockey East standings.
The program’s youth was on display throughout the roller-coaster first half of the season before they began to find their groove as the new year started. The Terriers won four straight games before the late January high-tension Boston College series, where the Terriers dropped two to their crosstown foe.
Two freshmen who have stood out for the Terriers are forward Cole Eiserman (CAS’28) and defenseman Cole Hutson (CAS’28). The two, along with forward Brandon Svoboda (SHA’28), won a gold medal as part of Team USA in the World Juniors Championship over winter break. Eiserman leads the team in goals, with 15, and Hutson leads the team in assists, with 17.
Three members of the team’s leadership group round out the top five in scoring for the Terriers. Assistant captain Quinn Hutson (SHA’26) leads the team with 30 points, followed by cocaptains Ryan Greene (COM’26) at 26 and Shane Lachance (SHA’27) at 23.
In net, goaltender Mathieu Caron (CAS’25) has started for the majority of the season, posting a .898 save percentage and a 3.17 goals-against average. Freshman goaltender Mikhail Yegorov (CAS’28), who arrived at BU just last month, earned the start in BU’s January 25 game against Boston College. He dominated in that one appearance, with 23 saves and one goal allowed.
It’s unclear whether Pandolfo will lean on experience or the hot hand for the first Beanpot game. He wasn’t shy about praising the new netminder’s performance during Beanpot media day, however.
“We gave [Yegorov] the opportunity, and I thought he was excellent. The composure, the confidence,” Pandolfo said. “Never playing a college team and playing against the No. 1 team in a hostile environment on the road, he was pretty damn good.”
When the Terriers, who own the most Beanpot Championships, with 31, take on Harvard in the opening round of play, they’ll have history on their side: they own a 30-18 Beanpot record against the Crimson. And, they are in search of their first Beanpot title since 2022, when they defeated Northeastern 1-0.

“This is when the season starts to ramp up and starts to get more fun, more competitive games, more meaningful games, so we’re really excited,” says assistant captain Devin Kaplan (SHA’26).
Boston College
The top-ranked Eagles enter the Beanpot with a 19-4-1 record and a 5-1 record against Beanpot teams this season. The only outlier is the team they face on Monday—Northeastern, who bested them 3-0 on November 22.
While the Eagles find themselves a national championship contender year after year, they haven’t found much success in recent Beanpots. They haven’t played in a championship game since 2019, when they lost to the Huskies 4-2, and their last Beanpot title came in 2016.
This year’s team is one of the program’s most formidable in recent memory. Its top line,which includes sophomore Gabe Perreault and freshmen James Hagens and Teddy Stiga, is one of the best in the nation. Sophomore assistant captain Ryan Leonard leads the NCAA in goals per game and is a front-runner for this year’s Hobey Baker award.
Sophomore goaltender Jacob Fowler is a brick wall in net and leads Hockey East in save percentage. He earned his sixth shutout of the year against BU on January 25.
Northeastern University
While the Huskies have the fewest Beanpot titles of the four participating teams, they’ve been on a hot streak in recent years. They’re in search of their third-straight Beanpot title, their sixth in the last seven years.
But Northeastern has skated to an underwhelming 9-12-3 record on the season, ranking ninth in Hockey East.
Forward Jack Williams leads Northeastern in scoring, with 12 goals and 17 assists, ranking fifth in the conference. The team’s top-six scorers enter the tournament with championship experience.
The Huskies are 14-34 against BC in the Beanpot, but their recent tournament magic and experience defeating the Eagles earlier this season could be all they need to pull off a win.
Harvard University
The Crimson are the only non–Hockey East team in the tournament and their 7-11-2record places them sixth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Harvard has won 11 Beanpot titles, their most recent in 2017, marking the longest drought among the four teams.
The last time BU and Harvard met in the semifinals, the Terriers won 4-3, en route to the 2022 championship.
Junior forward Joe Miller leads the Crimson in scoring, with 15 points, while junior Casey Severo leads the team in goals, with 8. The team runs a two-goalie system, with freshman Ben Charette, who owns a .920 save percentage, and junior Aku Koskenvuo, who is at .903.
A key for Harvard will be discipline since their 41st-ranked penalty kill may struggle against BU’s 7th-ranked power play. Luckily for the Crimson, the team owns the second-least penalty minutes per game in the NCAA.

SUNRISE — The Florida Panthers enjoyed themselves on Sunday with a comeback win against the Islanders on the night they celebrated Dmitry Kulikov’s 1,000th NHL game before flying to Washington for a Monday visit to the White House.
The defending Stanley Cup champions normally would have flown to Washington on Monday afternoon.
Due to their special stop at the White House with the Stanley Cup, the Panthers flew out late Sunday night.
They had some business to take care of first.
After beating the Islanders 6-3, the team gathered inside the Amerant Bank Arena to toast Kulikov after he played in his milestone game Wednesday against the Los Angeles Kings.
Kulikov was honored by the Panthers before Sunday’s win against the Islanders with the team holding a special on-ice ceremony after wearing his No. 7 jerseys in their warmup.
“I love it for the kids,’’ said Paul Maurice, referring to Kulikov’s two children being gifted mini versions of the traditional silver stick that he got from Bill Zito.
“The families don’t get to really be a part of a lot of things and then they get down on the ice for a pretty special night there last year. It’s a wonderful thing for the kids to be able to stand there and have their father recognized for such an accomplishment. I’m happy for him and his family.”

Despite having two of their top players out due to injuries sustained against the Lightning — and, starting a goalie making his NHL debut — the Islanders gave Florida all it could handle.
Carter Verhaeghe scored the first two of his three goals in the opening period against Jakub Skarek, only New York stormed back in the second with three straight goals.
Evan Rodrigues tied the score at 3 at 17:52 of the second by snaring a rebound of Anton Lundell’s shot and slid a backhand past the sprawling stick of Skarek.
Sam Reinhart made it 4-3 with 51 seconds left in the period, finishing off a rush he started by tapping in a pass from Gus Forsling.
The Panthers never trailed again.
“After the first period, we had to come back,” said Islanders coach Patrick Roy, the Hall of Famer who swept the Panthers in the 1996 Stanley Cup Final with Colorado.
“And it’s too bad. We took a 3-2 lead and there is a reason why they won the Stanley Cup, isn’t there? They are a good team, a team plays the right way and are very disciplined in their structure. We learned a lot tonight.”
Verhaeghe made it 5-3 to get his fourth career hat trick, and Matthew Tkachuk polished the game portion of the night with an empty-net goal.
“It was nice,’’ Verhaeghe said. “I’ve been shooting a lot lately and to get a couple, it feels pretty good. Our team is playing really well. I’m getting some chemistry with Barkov and Reinhart out there and it’s really nice that they’re finding me in great areas.”
“I think the games where we come to play right from the start is where we are at our best,” Verhaeghe said.
“It is kind of a mindset thing we like to have, and we had it tonight.’’

Stock market today: Stock indices Sensex and Nifty ended lower on Monday following weak global markets due to concerns about US President Donald Trump’s tariff implementation on trading partners. The BSE Sensex fell 319.22 points (0.41%) to 77,186.74, ending its five-day upward trend. During trading, it fell 749.87 points (0.96%) to 76,756.09. The NSE Nifty dropped 121.10 points (0.52%) to 23,361.05. Among Sensex components, major decliners included Larsen & Toubro, Tata Motors, Hindustan Unilever, Asian Paints, ITC, Power Grid, NTPC and Reliance Industries. Bajaj Finance led the gainers with over 5% increase. Other advancing stocks included Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Finserv, Bharti Airtel and Maruti. Asian markets in Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong closed significantly lower. European markets experienced substantial losses, while US markets finished lower on Friday. “Slump in global equity markets weighed negatively on Indian benchmarks after Trump announced tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada which fuelled pessimism amongst the investors. Besides, the rupee depreciating sharply raised concerns that foreign investors are unlikely to reverse the selling trend,” Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd, said. The tariffs of 25% on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10% on Chinese goods will commence from Tuesday. “The global market got unsettled amid the onset of the ‘Trade War,’ as tariff conflicts between the US and other nations are unlikely to yield any economic benefits. Instead, it may cause challenges to the global economy, heightening global financial risks,” Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 1.15% to USD 76.50 per barrel. On Saturday, the BSE benchmark achieved a slight gain of 5.39 points (0.01%) to 77,505.96 amid high volatility. The Nifty decreased by 26.25 points (0.11%) to 23,482.15. Markets operated on Saturday for the Union Budget presentation. According to exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 1,327.09 crore on Saturday.
The stock market today saw a downward trend as the BSE Sensex closed over 300 points down, while the Nifty50 managed to stay above the 23,350 mark.

Stock futures tumbled Sunday night to kick off a new trading month as investors weighed new U.S. tariffs on goods from key trade partners and their potential impact on the economy and corporate profits.
President Donald Trump on Saturday slapped a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada. He also placed a 10% levy on imports from China. The U.S. does about $1.6 trillion in business with the three countries.
Canada responded with retaliatory tariffs of its own, while Mexico said it would explore levies on U.S. imports. The Chinese government, meanwhile, said it would file a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization.
“Markets may now need to take the rest of Trump’s tariff agenda literally rather than just seriously … If this new level of seriousness gets priced in suddenly, Monday could be a rough day for markets,” Wolfe Research head of U.S. policy and politics Tobin Marcus said in a note.
Traders are also looking ahead to the biggest week for fourth-quarter earnings, which have become increasingly important in determining the state of the market as tariff concerns ramp and artificial intelligence stocks remain under scrutiny. More than 120 companies in the S&P 500 are set to report their results, including tech names Alphabet, Amazon and Palantir, as well consumer giants, including Walt Disney and Mondelez.
The January nonfarm payrolls report will also be out Friday, adding color to the employment picture so far this year. Economists polled by Dow Jones expect that 175,000 jobs were added last month. The unemployment rate is predicted to have remained unchanged at 4.1%.
Stocks are coming off of a volatile few weeks. The three major U.S. indexes ended Friday’s trading session in the red, but traders still closed off the first month of the year with gains. The S&P 500 gained 2.7% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite added 1.6% in January, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average outperformed during the period, jumping 4.7%.

No. 4 USC (19-1, 9-0 in Big Ten) travels to Iowa (14-7, 4-6) for a 1:30 p.m. ET tip-off inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday, looking to extend its win streak to 16 straight.
Sunday’s meeting between the Trojans and Hawkeyes is the first between both programs since USC joined the Big Ten from the Pac-12 over the offseason.
Watkins leads USC in scoring at 24.9 points per game this season, and has finished with at least 20 or more points in 18 games this year. The Trojans are coming off an 82-69 win at home against Minnesota on Thursday.
Iowa appears to be back on track after dropping five straight between Jan. 5-19 with back-to-back wins against Washington and Northwestern. Leading the way for the Hawkeyes in scoring is Villanova transfer Lucy Olsen, who is averaging 15.8 points per game this season.
Sunday’s game is a celebratory one for the Hawkeyes, as they will formally retire former Iowa legend Caitlin Clark’s No. 22 jersey — just the third player in program history to receive that honor.
