College basketball rankings: Alabama up to No. 3, Tennessee makes big jump in AP Top 25
Alabama moved up one spot in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll Monday from No. 4 to No. 3 after a perfect week in SEC play that included a road win over No. 14 Mississippi State and a home win over Georgia to improve to 8-1 in conference play. The Crimson Tide’s rise was aided by a loss by Iowa State, which had been ranked No. 3 for two consecutive weeks, after it stumbled twice this week in Big 12 play with losses to Arizona and Kansas State and fell to No. 8.
Alabama began the season ranked No. 2 and fell in the poll each of the first four weeks of the regular season to as far as No. 10 after a 6-2 start to the season that included losses to Purdue and Oregon. Since December, however, it has won 13 of its last 14 games led by the highest-scoring offense in college basketball.
Bama’s rise has been one of the biggest storylines in the SEC this season, overshadowed only by rival Auburn’s dominance all season. Auburn remained at No. 1 in the AP poll Monday for a fourth consecutive week and is the unanimous No. 1 for a third consecutive week after earning all 62 first-place votes.
Duke, on the heels of an 87-70 win over rival North Carolina over the weekend, remained at No. 2 for a third consecutive week, extending its stay in the top five to nine weeks. The Blue Devils did not pick off any first-place votes from the No. 1 Tigers but earned a season-high 1,488 points in the poll, up from 1,484 a week ago.

KU falls after biggest blown lead
Kansas is tracking toward a finish outside of the top three in its conference in back to back seasons for the first time in 40-plus years — after starting both last season and this season as the preseason No. 1. It fell in the poll this week five spots to No. 16, its lowest ranking of the season, after a 1-1 week in which it squeezed out a close home win over UCF and fell on the road 81-70 at Baylor — after gagging away a 21-point lead. The 21-point blown lead is the program’s largest on record.
Texas Tech, Maryland make big moves
The two biggest risers in the AP poll this week were Texas Tech, which moved from No. 22 to No. 13, and Maryland, which went from unranked to No. 18. It’s the highest ranking for Texas Tech since the final AP poll in 2021-22. It’s Maryland’s first appearance in the poll since the 2022-23 season and highest ranking since climbing to No. 13 in Week 5 that season.
How about Missouri?
Don’t let Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida distract you from brilliance elsewhere in the SEC. The league also has five more ranked teams including Missouri, which moved up to No. 15 this week. It marks the highest ranking for a Missouri basketball team in the AP poll this late in the season since 2011-12.
In the latest AP Top 25 rankings for college basketball, Alabama has climbed up to No. 3, while Tennessee has made a big jump as well. The Crimson Tide have been on a hot streak, with impressive wins over top-ranked teams, propelling them to one of the top spots in the nation.Meanwhile, the Volunteers have also been making noise in the rankings, moving up significantly due to their strong performances on the court. With a talented roster and a winning mentality, Tennessee is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in college basketball.
As the season continues, it will be interesting to see how these teams fare against tough competition and if they can maintain their rankings in the AP Top 25. Stay tuned for more updates on college basketball rankings and the exciting matchups ahead.

Coaches Poll Top 25 College Basketball Rankings released after Week 13
The USA TODAY Coaches Poll Top 25 has been updated following a superb thirteenth week for the 2024-2025 men’s college basketball season.
With conferences showdowns raging on, the schedule continues to provide awesome matchups and intriguing results. Many of the top teams in the country were still able to stamp their mark on the week, while others fell in the process, leading to some serious changes throughout the Top 25.
With that in mind, the sport’s brightest coaching minds put their brains together to come up with some rankings after Week 13. Check out the Top 25 below, and see if your team made the cut as the season progresses.
Auburn advanced to 20-1 over the past week. They defeated LSU on Wednesday, and followed that up with a win over Ole Miss on Saturday, furthering their resume as the best team in the nation.
The Tigers have two games this week, but one will be an intense conference battle. They’re facing Florida on Saturday afternoon, but before that a clash with Oklahoma is on the slate for Tuesday.
© Zachary Taft-Imagn Images Duke took care of business against their top rival over the weekend. Kon Knueppel led the way with 22 points, as they sent North Carolina home with a 17-point loss on Saturday.
At 19-2, the Blue Devils are hoping to keep the good times rolling this week. They’ll travel to face Syracuse on Wednesday, and then a trip to Clemson is on the docket for this weekend.
Alabama defeated Georgia by 21 on Saturday. That’s something football fans would love to see the Crimson Tide do over and over again when they play the Bulldogs, but it was the basketball team that took care of business this time around.
At 19-3, Alabama has become one of the top teams in the country, truly elevating their game. They’ll travel to face Arkansas on Saturday evening next.
Tennessee had an uneven week. First, they fell to Kentucky last Tuesday by five, but then they beat Florida by double digits over the weekend, which was huge for their psyche.
At 18-4, the Volunteers have two games this week. Missouri is on the docket for Wednesday, and then they’ll take on Oklahoma over the weekend.
© Tim Heitman Houston was on a roll, especially after defeating West Virginia on Wednesday. However, it all came to a halt over the weekend, as Texas Tech defeated the Cougars by one in overtime on Saturday.
They’ll have two chances to get back on track this week. Houston will face Oklahoma State on Tuesday, followed by a clash with Colorado this coming Saturday.
It was a disappointing weekend for Florida. They’d been on a solid run, but a trip to Knoxville didn’t end well for them, as the Gators fell by 20 to Tennessee.
There’s no rest for the weary though. Florida will face Vanderbilt on Tuesday, and then travel to take on No. 1 Auburn on Saturday.
Purdue continued their winning ways this past week. The Boilermakers defeated Indiana over the weekend, which strengthened their resume.
Iowa and USC will be their opponents this week. Purdue will be hoping to notch their eighteenth and nineteenth wins of the season in the process.
Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images A brutal week took place for Iowa State. The Cyclones fell to 17-4, which doesn’t sound too bad, but they’re on a two-game losing streak, after Arizona and Kansas State defeated them.
It won’t get any easier for them this week though. Iowa State faces Kansas on Monday, and then they’ll welcome TCU to town on Saturday.
Michigan State suffered their third loss of the season over the weekend. A West Coast trip didn’t end well for them, as USC defeated the Spartans by six.
Perhaps they’ll be able to get back on the winning side this week. UCLA and Oregon will be their opponents, as Michigan State looks to get back on track.
St. John’s is firing on all cylinders at the moment. The Big East program defeated Providence by two over the weekend, moving to 19-3 on the season and continuing their ascent.
The Red Storm have two massive games this week. First, they’ll battle Marquette on Tuesday, and then they’ll face Connecticut on Friday. It could be a legendary week, or a disappointing one — it’ll be up to Rick Pitino to have his team ready for the challenge.

#Coaches #Poll #Top #College #Basketball #Rankings #released #WeekAuburn, Duke remain 1-2 atop latest AP Top 25; Maryland jumps in for 1st time since 2023
Auburn and Duke remain 1-2 atop The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll for the third straight week, while Maryland is back in the rankings for the first time in nearly two years.
Bruce Pearl’s Tigers (20-1) held the No. 1 ranking for the fourth consecutive week in Monday’s poll and the third in a row as the unanimous choice. Auburn has claimed 246 of 248 first-place votes over the past month while remaining unbeaten in a rugged Southeastern Conference with nine ranked teams.
Auburn’s only loss came to Jon Scheyer’s Blue Devils (19-2), who enter the week with the nation’s longest winning streak at 15 games after rolling past rival North Carolina.
The two teams offered the only stability after 15 teams in last week’s AP Top 25 lost last week, with three of those losing twice.
The top tier
Alabama moved up a spot to No. 3, followed by Tennessee jumping four spots to No. 4 in an SEC-heavy top tier. Houston climbed one spot to No. 5 despite an overtime loss to now-No. 13 Texas Tech to end a 33-game home winning streak.
Florida was next at No. 6, followed by Purdue, Iowa State, Michigan State and Texas A&M to round out the top 10.
Rising
Texas Tech (17-4) had the biggest jump among last week’s ranked teams, rising nine spots to 13th after beating TCU at home and then beating the Cougars despite coach Grant McCasland and forward JT Toppin being ejected early.
Two-time reigning national champion UConn climbed six spots to No. 19 after winning at Marquette, while Missouri jumped five spots to No. 15 after beating Mississippi State.
In all, 10 teams moved up from their positions last week. That included Rick Pitino’s St. John’s team rising three spots to No. 12, the highest ranking for the program since finishing the 1999-2000 season at No. 9.
Sliding
Mississippi State had the week’s biggest tumble, falling eight spots to No. 22 after home losses to Alabama and Missouri. Iowa State joined the Bulldogs in a two-loss week, falling five spots after losses to Arizona and Kansas State.
No. 16 Kansas and No. 23 Illinois also fell five spots, pushing the list of sliding teams to 10.
Welcome
No. 18 Maryland, No. 20 Arizona and No. 24 Michigan were the week’s three new additions.
Kevin Willard’s Terrapins (17-5) jumped into the poll at No. 18 after pushing its winning streak to four games, a stretch that includes winning at then-No. 17 Illinois and beating then-No. 17 Wisconsin at home last week.
That gave Maryland its first poll ranking in nearly two years, the last coming with a week at No. 21 in late February 2023.
Arizona (15-6) returned to the poll for the first time since November. The Wildcats opened the year at No. 10 and peaked at ninth, but they’re back in after winning 11 of 12 — including against Iowa State after Caleb Love hit a halfcourt shot to force overtime.
Michigan (16-5) has two previous stints in the poll this season, peaking at No. 14 in early December.
Farewell (for now)
Oregon was one of the three departures from this week’s poll, falling out from No. 16 after being one of the trio to lose twice last week by falling at UCLA and at home to Nebraska. Louisville (No. 21) and Vanderbilt (No. 24) also fell out after losses to unranked foes.
Conference watch
The SEC had at least nine teams in the poll for the seventh straight week, including three weeks with 10 teams to make up 40% of the poll. The SEC has also had at least half of the top 10 eight times in nine weeks, peaking at six teams on Jan. 6. No other league has had more than six ranked teams in any week this season.
Maryland’s arrival pushed the Big Ten to six ranked teams, followed by the Big 12 with five and the Big East with three. The Atlantic Coast and American Athletic conferences each had one.

In the latest AP Top 25 rankings, Auburn and Duke are holding strong at the top two spots. Auburn, coming off a dominant performance, remains undefeated and is showing no signs of slowing down. Duke, led by their star player, continues to prove why they are a force to be reckoned with. One of the biggest surprises in this week’s rankings is Maryland jumping into the top 25 for the first time since 2023. The Terrapins have been making noise this season with some impressive wins, and their hard work has finally paid off with a spot in the rankings. Maryland fans are surely excited to see their team getting the recognition they deserve.
As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how these top teams continue to perform and if any others will shake up the rankings. Stay tuned for more updates on college basketball action.

Men’s college basketball Top 25: The underappreciated key to Duke’s defense
Nine of the teams ranked third through 14th on my last ballot lost this week. That made it tough to sort this week’s Top 25, but it’s not hard up top. There is a clear top three, and No. 1 isn’t a difficult decision either.
Auburn continues to perform at an elite level in a league that’s viewed as head and shoulders above everyone else.
Ken Pomeroy has a trusty tool for comparing the strength of conferences across seasons: the adjusted efficiency margin of a team that would be expected to go .500 in conference play in that league. Currently, this year’s SEC has the best rating in the database, which dates back to 1997. And that got me to thinking it’s possible Auburn is doing something historically awesome, considering the Tigers are undefeated in this stacked league.
Let’s compare Auburn’s start to the eventual champions of the seven leagues with the eight adjusted efficiency margins higher than 18 since 1997. The first record in the second and third columns is where each champions was eight conference games in, and the second is how it finished.

The best comps for Auburn seem to be 2004 Duke and 2010 Kansas, which both were both undefeated in the best conference in college basketball that year through eight games. Both entered the NCAA Tournament ranked as the top team at KenPom (Auburn is currently No. 1), and neither won the NCAA Tournament.
I’m betting the SEC and Auburn perform very well in this year’s NCAA Tournament, but neither team nor league success is a sure thing. The ACC flamed out in the 1997 NCAA Tournament despite being loaded with talent that year: Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison at UNC, Tim Duncan at Wake Forest. Duke didn’t have its usual handful of future NBA stars but did have Trajan Langdon, who was a great college player. Five of the league’s nine teams finished in the top 12 at KenPom. This was a very, very good league. But the ACC went 8-6 in the NCAA Tournament.
That, plus a dominant Kansas team from 2010 getting Farokhmaneshed in the second round by Northern Iowa is a reminder that you should not always judge a team and/or league by what happens in the NCAA Tournament.
Reminder: Below my Top 25, I give nuggets on an unspecified number of teams each week. So when a team appears in the table but not in the text below, that’s why. Scroll on for notes on Duke, Alabama, Purdue, Texas Tech, Michigan State, Missouri, Arizona and UCLA
2. Duke
Duke’s length can make you feel claustrophobic in the half court, and North Carolina struggled to get quality shots early on in Saturday’s runaway win for the Blue Devils. It’s been written about ad nauseam that every player in Duke’s rotation is 6-5 or taller, but it’s not just the length that makes Duke’s switching scheme work. Combine the strength and physicality of guards Sion James and Kon Knueppel with the lateral quickness of Khaman Maluach and Maliq Brown, plus Cooper Flagg’s ability to play safety and cover a ton of ground, and you’re cooking with gasoline. But James and Knueppel are the two who play an underappreciated role in making it all work.
To understand why the length/physicality combo matters for the guards, watch what happened when either James or Knueppel switched onto a center against the Tar Heels.
When Jalen Washington rolled on this early trip, Flagg was tasked as the tag to help against the roller. Elliot Cadeau was reading Flagg and assumed that he was going to creep into the paint, which meant Cadeau could hit Seth Trimble with a skip pass for a wide-open 3.
Flagg got the steal because he knew he could stay more in the gap as soon as he saw that James was in position and didn’t need any help. The trust that James could fend for himself freed up Flagg for the interception.
Later in the half, when Knueppel switched onto Ven-Allen Lubin, the automatic read was to go to the post against a guard. That’s what UNC did. But does this look like a mismatch?
When James and Knueppel are both off the floor, Duke’s defense allows 99.2 points per 100 possessions, compared to 87.1 when both are on the floor, per CBB Analytics. And when you put them with Flagg and Maluach, that grouping is plus-115 in 196 minutes and holding opponents to 84.8 points per 100 possessions. I wrote earlier this season about the impact of coach Jon Scheyer’s move to put James into the starting point guard role, and the numbers and film continue to justify that decision.
3. Alabama
One thing that makes Alabama’s offense so good: Nate Oats will find a play that works against an opponent and keep going back to it. That approach helped the Crimson Tide win at Mississippi State on Wednesday.
The play was a pick-and-roll with Mark Sears and Grant Nelson, combined with an exit screen on the left side of the floor for a shooter and Chris Youngblood spotted up on the right side of the floor. Alabama ran it early, and Nelson got an easy dunk:
Coming out of a timeout on the last possession of the half, Oats went to it again and got the same result:
Now fast-forward to the last minute of the game, with Alabama again coming out of a timeout, ahead by just one:
Nelson ended up missing those free throws, leaving the door open for the Bulldogs, but this is why the Crimson Tide are so hard to guard. Their shooters make you focus so much on defending the 3 that a roller can slip to the basket and get to the rim three times on the same play. After two games in a row finishing over 40 percent from 3, the Crimson Tide are now shooting 36.9 percent from deep after a cold start in nonconference play. They’ve been the most efficient offense in SEC play, are up to No. 2 in adjusted efficiency nationally and just seem to be hitting their rhythm with Youngblood finally finding his place — he made seven 3s in Starkville.
8. Purdue
Braden Smith is having one of the most impressive seasons for a point guard in recent memory. Smith currently leads college basketball in assist rate (46.5), which is assists divided by the field goals made by the player’s teammates while he’s on the floor. KenPom tracks assist rate leaders going back to 2004, and if Smith were to finish with his current rate, he’d rank sixth in that time among high-major point guards.
And when you measure him against those other five using other categories, you could argue Smith is impacting winning more than anyone above him.

Smith got a first-team nod on The Athletic’s midseason All-America squads last week, and if he keeps this up or anything close to it, he’d be a lock to make the Associated Press first team at the end of the season, which would lead to a cool accomplishment for the Boilermakers. Purdue would become just the 12th school to produce an AP first-team All-American in three straight seasons without it being the same player for all three years. Adding to the unlikelihood of the feat for Purdue: Both Zach Edey and Smith were three-star, sub-top-150 recruits coming out of high school.
10. Texas Tech
Not only did Texas Tech break Houston’s nation-leading 32-game home winning streak and do it without leading scorer JT Toppin and coach Grant McCasland — both of whom were ejected three minutes, 50 seconds in after Toppin accidentally kicked Joseph Tugler in the groin — the Red Raiders adjusted their game plan to do something you just don’t do against Houston: going at the Cougars in isolation.
Prior to Saturday, Houston was allowing 0.584 points per possession in isolation this season, according to Synergy. Only once in the last two seasons had anyone scored in double digits in iso plays against the Cougars, and that was Texas Tech, with 10 points on isos last season. No team this year had scored more than seven.
The Red Raiders scored 17 points on 12 isolation plays for a 1.42 points per possession success rate. They picked out matchups they liked, spread the floor and went at the Cougars. Look at the intentional spacing here with three shooters off the ball:
Texas Tech’s offense excels in transition and pick-and-roll, but without Toppin and going against an elite defense, this why-would-you-try-it-against-Houston strategy ended up winning the game. Texas Tech went a perfect 4 for 4 in overtime, scoring nine points on iso plays, including six points for Chance McMillian. And get this: The senior guard had scored only five points on iso plays all season.
13. Michigan State
Michigan State’s 13-game winning streak ended on Saturday at USC, and while the run was impressive, it was somewhat aided by the schedule. Since losing to Memphis at the Maui Invitational, Michigan State has played only two top-40 teams in KenPom net rating, and its only win all season against a team currently in my top 25 was against Illinois at home.
Over the final 10 games of the regular season, the Spartans play eight top-40 teams, including seven teams currently in my top 25. No need to apologize for winning, but we should get a much clearer picture of how good the Spartans are over the next five weeks.
14. Missouri
Mizzou is winning by leaning heavily on the 3-ball in conference play, with an SEC-high 3-point rate of 46.2 percent and an average of 10.2 3s per game in conference games. It has helped that Caleb Grill has turned into a modern-day Reggie Miller. Grill is shooting 49 percent from 3 on the year and has made 21 of his 40 shots from deep over the last five games.
Grill is so hard to guard because he can shoot on the move and gets it off quickly:
And when he’s spotted up, he’s been automatic, making 8 of those 9 attempts over the last five games — doesn’t matter the distance:
The key for someone with this kind of range and ability to sprint into shots is leg strength. Grill was a high jumper in high school and won the state title, clearing 6-8.
Grill has been on one heck of a journey. I met him six years ago when he was a senior in high school who had suddenly become a coveted recruit after T.J. Otzelberger left South Dakota State, where Grill was committed, for UNLV. Grill went from Iowa State to UNLV to play for Otzelberger, back to Iowa State to follow Otzelberger, then was kicked off the team in 2023 and landed at Mizzou, where he fractured his wrist last season and was granted a medical redshirt for a sixth year. Now he’s one of the most feared shooters in college basketball coming off the bench for the Tigers. That much player movement can leave some skittish, but his college career’s story is getting quite the ending.
18. Arizona
Arizona has become the team everyone thought it would be in the preseason. The Wildcats have cut down on their fouling, and they’ve started shooting and making more 3s with the insertion of Anthony Dell’Orso into the starting lineup. Using Bart Torvik’s sorting tool, here’s a look at the data:

In addition, 6-foot-8 freshman wing Carter Bryant and sophomore 7-footer Henri Veesaar have seen their minutes go up. The offense is thriving, but it feels like the defense could go to another level, especially with Bryant and Veesaar on the floor. Using on-off numbers, they’ve been the Wildcats’ two best defenders.
25. UCLA
This week posed one of the season’s more challenging decisions on who should be No. 25. Let’s do a blind resume test to show my work.
Torvik has a handy tool that gives an average for resume-based metrics (KPI, strength of record and wins above bubble) and then an average for metrics that measure quality (BPI, KenPom and Torvik). I’ve also included the teams’ Quad 1 record and a stat of my creation, which is the wins over teams currently in my top 25. Let’s take a look at the teams in contention this week:

What if I were to tell you that Team C just swept Team G, winning the latest matchup by 26, and has won five in a row? And if Team G were in, that would bump Team C’s WOT25 up to four? Justification for Team C, right?
That’s the conclusion I came to, and why UCLA got the final spot this week.
Here’s who was who: Louisville (Team A), Clemson (B), UCLA (C), Creighton (D), Baylor (E), UConn (F), Oregon (G), Saint Mary’s (H) and Memphis (I).
Dropped out: Oregon, Louisville, Clemson.
Keeping an eye on: Creighton, Baylor, UConn, Saint Mary’s, Drake.

Duke’s men’s college basketball team has been making waves this season with their dominant defense, and one key player who often goes unnoticed is Mark Williams. The 7-foot sophomore center has been a crucial part of the Blue Devils’ defensive success, using his size and shot-blocking ability to disrupt opponents’ game plans.Williams may not always light up the stat sheet with points, but his presence in the paint is felt every game. He leads the team in blocks and alters countless shots, making it difficult for opposing players to drive to the basket or get easy looks inside.
In addition to his shot-blocking prowess, Williams is also a strong rebounder, pulling down boards on both ends of the court and helping Duke limit second-chance opportunities for their opponents.
While stars like Paolo Banchero and Wendell Moore Jr. garner much of the attention for Duke, it’s players like Williams who do the dirty work on defense and allow the team to be successful. His contributions may not always show up in the box score, but they are crucial to the Blue Devils’ success.
As Duke continues to climb the rankings and make a push for the NCAA tournament, keep an eye on Mark Williams and the impact he has on the team’s defense. He may not get the same recognition as some of his teammates, but his importance to the Blue Devils cannot be overstated.

Big Ten in updated Coaches Poll, AP Top 25
Over the past several months, a handful of contenders have emerged as the Big Ten’s best hopes for its first men’s basketball national championship team since 2000.
The program that won that now-25-year-old title, Michigan State, is one of them, with a surprising 18-3 record. Purdue isn’t quite where it was last season with Zach Edey, but it’s not terribly far off with Braden Smith leading the way. Wisconsin, with a potent and shockingly fast-paced offense, is excelling. Newcomers Oregon and UCLA have turned heads. Few teams in the country are playing better than Maryland right now. And Michigan, behind a pair of versatile 7-footers, has impressed in its first season under Dusty May.
The past week included some notable results that shape both the conference and national landscape. Tom Izzo’s Spartans saw their 13-game win streak come to an end in a loss at USC. Maryland knocked off Wisconsin 76-58. UCLA blew out Oregon 78-52. Purdue held off archrival Indiana 81-76.

#Big #Ten #updated #Coaches #Poll #TopNew team at top, Nebraska shoots up
Michigan Wolverines basketball is near the top of the Big Ten, but there are two teams currently ranked ahead of them in our power rankings.
These rankings (attempt to) strike the balance of properly weighing recent performances more heavily than ones in the distant past, while not overreacting to one or two results, with the acknowledgment that Big Ten play is a grind, and there’s a lot of parity in the league.
SUPERLATIVES
New No. 1: Purdue
Biggest jump: Nebraska (17th to 11th)
Biggest fall: Minnesota (11th to 16th)RELATED
• Film breakdown: How Michigan contained Ace Bailey, Danny Wolf’s late-game emergence, more from Rutgers win
• Five takeaways from Michigan’s win over Rutgers: Wolverines grind out Quad 1 victory1. Purdue (17-5 overall, 9-2 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 2nd (+1)
Last week: vs. Indiana (W, 81-76)
This week: at Iowa (Feb. 4), vs. USC (Feb. 7)Purdue was in a hotly-contested game against Indiana Friday night at Mackey, but pulled away late and snatched the victory. With Michigan State losing, the Boilermakers have the top spot in the Big Ten.
2. Michigan State (18-3 overall, 9-1 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 1st (-1)
Last week: vs. Minnesota (W, 73-51), at USC (L, 70-64)
This week: at UCLA (Feb. 4), vs. Oregon (Feb. 8)Michigan State stands atop the Big Ten standings with a 9-1 record, but it’s played the easiest schedule in the conference, according to Kenpom. Just before the road gets much tougher — beginning with Tuesday’s game at UCLA — the Spartans dropped one they shouldn’t have, losing to USC at the Galen Center. The offense flatlined in the loss.
3. Michigan (16-5 overall, 8-2 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 3rd (—)
Last week: vs. Penn State (W, 76-72), at Rutgers (W, 66-63)
This week: vs. Oregon (Feb. 5), at Indiana (Feb. 8)Michigan survived both of its tests last week, gutting out victories over Penn State and Rutgers. Neither were pretty games, but they continue to stack wins while adjusting to the physicality of the Big Ten. They responded from the embarrassing, 27-point loss at Purdue.
4. Maryland (17-5 overall, 7-4 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 5th (+1)
Last week: vs. Wisconsin (W, 76-68)
This week: at Ohio State (Feb. 6), vs. Rutgers (Feb. 9)Maryland is legit. Head coach Kevin Willard‘s crew proved it could win on the road with victories over Illinois and Indiana, then took care of business at home last week, beating Wisconsin 76-68.
Guard play can carry a team down the stretch, and Maryland has good ones, highlighted by Ja’Kobi Gillespie, who’s ascending just as his team is. Don’t sleep on big men Julian Reese and Derik Queen, either. Right now, the Terrapins have a look of a team that knows exactly what it is, and that can take them a long way.
5. Wisconsin (17-5 overall, 7-4 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 4th (-1)
Last week: at Maryland (L, 76-68), at Northwestern (W, 76-69)
This week: vs. Indiana (Feb. 4), at Iowa (Feb. 8)Wisconsin was in danger of losing Saturday at Northwestern, trailing in the middle of the second half. That would’ve been two-straight setbacks, since they lost at Maryland earlier in the week, but they gutted it out led by a 27-point performance from wing John Tonje, who made 5 threes. The Badgers swap places with Maryland.
6. UCLA (16-6 overall, 7-4 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 7th (+1)
Last week: at USC (W, 82-76), vs. Oregon (W, 78-52)
This week: vs. Michigan State (Feb. 4), vs. Penn State (Feb. 8)The lighter schedule has had something to do with UCLA’s five-game win streak, but there’s no question Mick Cronin‘s team is playing better after he called them out publicly early last month.
Since Jan. 17, when the win streak started, UCLA has been the third-most efficient team in the country, according to Bart Torvik’s T-Rank, including ranking No. 1 in the nation in offense. The Bruins have really found something with 7-foot-3 Spanish big man Aday Mara, who’s playing more minutes and has scored in double figures three of the last four games.
UCLA fended off USC across town and then dominated Oregon Thursday night. The Bruins bludgeoned the Ducks on the interior and made 11 threes — a deadly combo.
7. Illinois (15-7 overall, 7-5 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 6th (-1)
Last week: at Nebraska (L, 80-74 in OT), vs. Ohio State (W, 87-79)
This week: at Rutgers (Feb. 5), at Minnesota (Feb. 8)Illinois is the second-highest ranked seven-loss team in America on Kenpom, and it’s still in a bit of a funk. The Fighting Illini are 3-4 in their last seven games, with part of the reason being health. They’ve dealt with illnesses over the last couple weeks.
Starting center Tomislav Ivisic (mono) finally returned to the lineup for Sunday’s win over Ohio State, but the team had already fallen to Nebraska in overtime earlier in the week. They couldn’t get anything going on the inside — instead taking 42 three-pointers — in a loss in Lincoln.
8. USC (13-8 overall, 5-5 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 9th (+1)
Last week: vs. UCLA (L, 82-76), vs. Michigan State (W, 70-64)
This week: at Northwestern (Feb. 4), at Purdue (Feb. 7)USC is 2-2 in its last four games, but it’s clearly a team on the ascent. The Trojans have found their identity as a tough shot-making and defensive rebounding team — and they just collected their biggest win yet.
The Trojans impressively beat Michigan State, 70-64, Saturday in Los Angeles, handing the Spartans their first Big Ten loss of the season. They exposed MSU’s inability to hit three-point shots by sagging off multiple players and packing the paint, risks that paid off.
9. Oregon (16-6 overall, 5-6 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 8th (-1)
Last week: at UCLA (L, 78-52), vs. Nebraska (L, 77-71)
This week: at Michigan (Feb. 5), at Michigan State (Feb. 8)Oregon is in a rut, having three in a row and four of its last five games, before a tough road trip where it’ll play Michigan and Michigan State. The Ducks led for just over one minute of game time during the three-game skid.
Oregon started out 9-0 but is 7-5 since. Something is just off in Eugene.
They’ve struggled on the defensive end lately, allowing over 1.1 points per possession in each of the last three games. They’re not playing with confidence anymore, which is less than ideal with what’s ahead.
10. Ohio State (13-9 overall, 5-6 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 10th (—)
Last week: vs. Iowa (W, 82-65), at Penn State (W, 83-64), at Illinois (L, 87-79)
this week: vs. Maryland (Feb. 6), at Nebraska (Feb. 9)Ohio State was on a three-game winning streak before getting outhustled and outmuscled in the final 10 or so minutes of an 87-79 loss at Illinois Sunday afternoon. The Buckeyes have some quality wins under their belt, including over Kentucky and Purdue, but have been very up and down all year.
11. Nebraska (13-8 overall, 4-7 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 17th (+6)
Last week: vs. Illinois (W, 80-74 in OT), at Oregon (W, 77-71)
This week: at Washington (Feb. 5), vs. Ohio State (Feb. 9)There’s not much separation between the bottom eight teams in the Big Ten, allowing Nebraska to shoot up to No. 11 with an incredible week. The Cornhuskers beat Illinois and won at Oregon, looking like a completely different team than we saw just weeks ago.
Sixth-year senior guard Brice Williams is putting together one of those seasons, carrying Nebraska in critical moments. He should be up for Big Ten Player of the Week honors, scoring 27 at Illinois and 28 versus Oregon. He’s a bucket, with eight games scoring 25-plus points this year.
12. Northwestern (12-10 overall, 3-8 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 12th (—)
Last week: vs. Rutgers (L, 79-72), vs. Wisconsin (L, 75-69)
This week: vs. USC (Feb. 4), at Washington (Feb. 8)Northwestern is on a three-game losing streak and has lost seven of its last nine contests. The Wildcats have had a tough schedule, so we’ll see if they can grab a couple wins as it lightens up a bit over the next few weeks.
13. Indiana (14-8 overall, 5-6 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 13th (—)
Last week: at Purdue (L, 81-76)
This week: at Wisconsin (Feb. 4), vs. Michigan (Feb. 8)Indiana led for 17:14 of game time at Purdue and was right in it until the end, holding a one-point advantage with just over 10 seconds remaining, but couldn’t quite hang on in a tough environment at Mackey.
The next couple weeks will tell us if Indiana is in a free fall or they can actually salvage things and become a bubble team. They have an incredibly difficult slate coming up, against the following opponents: Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State, UCLA and Purdue.
14. Rutgers (11-11 overall, 4-7 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 15th (+1)
Last week: at Northwestern (W, 79-72), vs. Michigan (L, 66-63)
This week: vs. Illinois (Feb. 5), at Maryland (Feb. 9)No Dylan Harper, no problem for Rutgers Wednesday night at Northwestern. Fellow five-star freshman Ace Bailey dropped 37 points, and his surrounding cast shot better than 50 percent from the field. But Saturday against Michigan, Bailey shot 3-of-15 from the field and the rest of the Scarlet Knights didn’t make enough shots.
Rutgers is a tough out, but nothing more than that at the moment. Getting Harper (ankle) healthy is paramount, otherwise Bailey is going to have to do everything on the offensive end.
15. Penn State (13-9 overall, 3-8 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 14th (-1)
Last week: at Michigan (L, 76-72), vs. Ohio State (L, 83-64)
This week: vs. Minnesota (Feb. 4), at UCLA (Feb. 8)Penn State nearly knocked off Michigan at Crisler but lost a late lead. Then it went home and played Ohio State at the old Rec Hall. Neither the environment at the 6,502-seat alternative home gym nor the team had any juice that night, and the Buckeyes ran them out of it. Penn State couldn’t get a stop or a rebound.
16. Minnesota (11-11 overall, 3-8 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 11th (-5)
Last week: at Michigan State (L, 73-51), vs. Washington (L, 71-68)
This week: at Penn State (Feb. 4), vs. Illinois (Feb. 8)Hand up, we were over ambitious ranking Minnesota 11th in the league last week, but it was playing well. There’s no shame in losing big at Michigan State, but falling to Washington in Minneapolis is a black mark on the résumé.
17. Washington (11-10 overall, 2-8 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 18th (+1)
Last week: at Minnesota (W, 71-68)
This week: vs. Nebraska (Feb. 5), vs. Northwestern (Feb. 8)Washington got off the mat. The Huskies had dropped six-consecutive games before beating Minnesota this week. We’ve moved them ahead of Iowa because of their road win and the Hawkyes remaining lifeless.
18. Iowa (13-8 overall, 4-6 Big Ten)
Previous ranking: 16th (-2)
Last week: at Ohio State (L, 82-65)
This week: vs. Purdue (Feb. 4), vs. Wisconsin (Feb. 8)Iowa simply can’t rebound or play defense. This is a Fran McCaffery team that has to score well over 1.1 points per possession to win, meaning victories are going to be hard to come by in the Big Ten.

#team #top #Nebraska #shootsWomen’s College Basketball Rankings: AP Poll Top 25 updated to start February
February is here and with that the women’s college basketball season is entering one of the most important periods of the regular season as conference championship races heat up. With that, the AP Top 25 Poll has once again been updated with the latest results in mind.
Conference play is in full swing and, with that, the race for the top of the standings in the regular season is heating up. At this point, there are only so many opportunities to make a move or risk not having enough time to get to the top of their respective conference standings. That also means that teams are jockeying for position in their future conference tournament seeding.
With all of that in mind, here’s a look at the updated AP Top 25 Poll in women’s college basketball for the first week of February.
The UCLA Bruins march on with their undefeated season. Since the last AP Poll came out, the Bruins only had one game, a Big Ten battle against Minnesota that saw the Golden Gophers hang around for a half before the Bruins pulled away to win by 26 points. That improved UCLA to 22-0.
On Wednesday, UCLA is in for a major test when they host the Ohio State Buckeyes. That should, on paper, be the start of the toughest stretch of the season for UCLA. With eight total games remaining, four of those are against ranked teams including two against USC before the season comes to an end.
Jan 9, 2025; Columbia, South Carolina, USA; South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley directs her team against the Texas A&M Aggies in the first half at Colonial Life Arena. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Blake-Imagn Images In SEC play, South Carolina has once again been dominant and their only loss this season remains against UCLA in non-conference play. In the last week, that saw the Gamecocks win a pair of games, starting with a hard-fought win against Tennessee, before returning home for a double-digit win against Auburn.
In this next week, South Carolina is going to hit the road for a pair of tests. First, the Gamecocks are set to travel to play Georgia on the road. That could become a trap because, at the end of the week, they’ll travel to Austin for one of the biggest games of the season against Texas.
Since Notre Dame stumbled in late November in non-conference play, the Irish have been dominant. That has seen them become the frontrunner in the ACC throughout the season and that continued with a pair of double-digit road wins against Virginia Tech and Louisville.
Now considered one of the best teams in the country by the AP Poll, Notre Dame has a target on its back moving forward this season. Of course, the schedule also doesn’t get easier from here. Notre Dame will return home next week before hosting a pair of West Coast schools, hosting Stanford and Cal.
The Texas Longhorns have now won six games in a row since dropping a road test against South Carolina in the middle of January. Last week, that included wins over Missouri and Texas A&M. That win over the Aggies was especially sweet.
The schedule gets tougher next week with some AP-ranked opponents coming up. First, Texas will need to stay focused on Thursday when they take on the Vanderbilt Commodores. Otherwise, they could easily get trapped looking ahead to South Carolina coming to town on Sunday for a rematch.
© Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports All the UConn Huskies do in Big East play is win. The last time they had a game that was less than a double-digit win was back in December when they suffered a two-point loss to USC. Last week, for the Huskies, it was a pair of blowout wins over DePaul and Butler consecutively.
Next week, UConn has an interesting test to look ahead to, and it’s not in the Big East. Next Thursday, the Huskies have an interesting test against Tennessee, in a classic women’s basketball matchup. After that, it’s back to Big East play against Providence.
The LSU Tigers seem to have fully bounced back from their loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks with a run of three wins in a row. That included a close win over Oklahoma where the score went on to be 107-100 last Thursday. The Tigers would then follow up with a double-digit win over Mississippi State.
Next week, LSU hits the road for a game against Missouri. After that, they’ll enter one of their toughest stretches of the season, playing teams who either are ranked in the AP Poll or were recently ranked in the AP Poll in four of the next five games, starting with Tennessee.
The USC Trojans stumbled in their second game of the week, dropping a road game against Iowa in front of an emotionally charged crowd. In particular, a four-point first quarter was costly and put a damper on their win over Minnesota earlier in the week. It also cost the Trojans in the AP Poll.
Things aren’t going to get any easier for USC from here in Big Ten play. Next week, the Trojans are set to take on Wisconsin and Ohio State. They’ll need to maintain focus too because UCLA is just around the corner the week after that set of tough games and a loss there would put USC behind the eight-ball in a tough Big Ten.
Ohio State forward Cotie McMahon celebrates a win over Maryland during the 2023-24 season. (Barbara J. Perenic/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK) Since getting upset by Penn State in January, Ohio State has bounced back with three straight wins and is now ranked in the Top 10 of the AP Poll again. Only one of those games came since the last AP Poll came out, a 10-point game against Washington. That has left them tied for second in the Big Ten standings.
From here, however, Ohio State is really going to get tested by Big Ten play. On Wednesday, the Buckeyes are on the road against UCLA. After that, they’ll stick in Los Angeles for another road test against USC. That could make for a potentially make or break week for the Buckeyes as it relates to their regular season hopes in conference play.
Since their one-point upset loss to a tough Oklahoma State team, TCU has bounced back in a fairly major way. They’ve added wins against Baylor and Iowa State, both of whom are competitive in the Big 12, and now they’re back at the top of the conference standings and are highly ranked in the AP Poll.
Next week has maybe the biggest game of the season for TCU. The Horned Frogs are set to take on Kansas State on Wednesday. Another highly ranked team, the two seem to be the top two competitors in the Big 12 and, with that, the game is going to put someone in the driver’s seat. From there, TCU needs to avoid upsets, starting with Texas Tech at the end of the week.
The Duke Blue Devils had an interesting week in the middle of the season and conference play. They didn’t play a single game. Beating Georgia Tech last Sunday helped the Blue Devils get into the AP Top 10 at the time, but they haven’t played a game since the last poll came out.
Now, Duke is getting ready for a tough game on Monday night when they travel to rival NC State. From there, they’ll play a back-to-back against Clemson before adding another game on Sunday against Miami. That should, in part, make up for the week off that Duke had to try and hit the reset button with.

#Womens #College #Basketball #Rankings #Poll #Top #updated #start #FebruarySouthern Cal falls to No. 7 in AP Top 25 women’s basketball poll
Southern Cal’s second loss of the season dropped the Trojans to seventh in The Associated Press Top 25 women’s basketball poll Monday.
The previously No. 4 Trojans were shocked Sunday by the host Iowa Hawkeyes 76-69 on the day that Caitlin Clark’s jersey was retired. USC’s only other loss came at home to Notre Dame in November.
UCLA, South Carolina and Notre Dame remained the top three teams in the rankings. The Bruins received all 32 first-place votes in the poll from a national media panel, picking up the one that the Gamecocks garnered last week.
The Bruins beat Minnesota 79-53 in their lone game last week to remain as the only unbeaten team in the country. South Carolina knocked off then-No. 18 Tennessee and Auburn. The victory over the Tigers on Sunday came on a day when the Gamecocks retired the jersey of A’ja Wilson.
Texas, UConn and LSU all moved up a spot to follow the Fighting Irish. Ohio State, TCU and Duke remained eight through 10.
No. 11 Kentucky has its best ranking in four years behind first-year coach Kenny Brooks. The Wildcats (19-2), who last were ranked this high in 2021, have their bye week before hitting a tough stretch of the SEC schedule to close the regular season. They still have games left against South Carolina, LSU, Texas and Tennessee.
The Wildcats’ only losses this season came against North Carolina on Dec. 5 and Texas A&M on Jan. 23.
CONFERENCE BREAKDOWN
With no new teams in the poll this week, the Southeastern Conference remained atop the standings with eight teams ranked. The ACC had seven. The Big Ten was next with five. The Big 12 has four ranked teams and the Big East one.
GAMES OF THE WEEK
No. 9 TCU at No. 12 Kansas State (Wednesday): First place in the Big 12 will be on the line when the Horned Frogs visit the Wildcats. Both teams are 9-1 in conference play.
No. 5 UConn at No. 19 Tennessee (Thursday): These two will renew their rivalry with the Huskies visiting the Lady Vols. It will be the first time that UConn sees Tennessee coach Kim Caldwell’s pressing style.
No. 2 South Carolina at No. 4 Texas (Sunday): The Longhorns will try to avenge a 17-point loss in Columbia last month. South Carolina has a one-game lead in the standings on the Longhorns, Kentucky and LSU.
Southern Cal women’s basketball team has fallen to No. 7 in the latest AP Top 25 poll. Despite a strong start to the season, the Trojans have suffered a couple of losses recently, causing them to drop in the rankings. The team will need to regroup and refocus in order to climb back up the rankings and make a push for the top spot. With plenty of talent and potential, Southern Cal has the ability to bounce back and make a statement in the remainder of the season.
Fans and supporters of the Trojans will be eagerly watching to see how the team responds to this setback and how they perform in the upcoming games. Stay tuned for more updates on Southern Cal women’s basketball as they look to make a run in the rankings.

Penn State target, top wrestling recruit Bo Bassett nearing commitment
Bo Bassett — the top wrestling prospect in the country, a Penn State target and a star at Bishop McCort — is close to a final decision in his high-profile recruitment.
Bassett announced on Sunday that he will be revealing his commitment this week. FloWrestling Radio Live posted that the Johnstown native will call in with a “major update” at 11 a.m. Monday.

After fielding interest from every major program in the country, Bassett’s seven finalists are Penn State, Oklahoma State, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State, Rutgers and Virginia Tech.
“After an amazing recruiting process, lots of great conversations, miles, weekends, texts and prayers, I have my mind made up and this week I will be making my commitment live on Flo Wrestling,” Bassett wrote on social media. “When I narrowed it down to the final 7, I feel like I couldn’t make a bad choice.”
Penn State target, top wrestling recruit Bo Bassett nearing commitmentBo Bassett, one of the top wrestling recruits in the country, is nearing his college commitment decision and all signs point to Penn State as the frontrunner. The 17-year-old from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has garnered attention from top wrestling programs across the country, but it appears that the Nittany Lions have made a strong impression on him.

Bo Bassett recruiting update: Micah Parsons gives Penn State pitch to top wrestling prospect
Dallas Cowboys star and Penn State alum Micah Parsons made his pitch to No. 1 wrestling recruit Bo Bassett Sunday.
With news that Bassett will announce his decision early this week, Parsons made a last ditch effort to try and convince Bassett to come wrestle for the Nittany Lions. Basically, Bassett would add generational talent to the already No. 1 Penn State wrestling team.
Parsons, a noted college wrestling fans especially of his alma mater, clearly wants Bassett to don the classic PSU singlet.
“After seeing Penn state domination it can’t be any other choice!!! We have the best environment and wrestling room in the country! That’s facts! Come join the greatest legacy ever created!!,” Parsons wrote on Twitter.
Bassett is MatScouts’ No. 1 overall prospect in the Class of 2026 and one of the most sought after prospects in recent memory. Recently, Bassett won his third Ironman title, this time at 144 pounds and had tech falls over six straight opponents.
As a reminder, here was the schedule of visits for Bassett throughout his recruitment:
Sep 20-22: Michigan
Oct 25-27: Iowa
Nov 1-3: Penn State
Nov 8-10: Ohio State
Nov 15-17: Virginia Tech
Nov 22-24: Oklahoma State
Jan 24-26: RutgersThe top prospect’s visits have been watched with close eyes as Bassett could be seen as a program changer, along with younger brothers Keegan Bassett (2028) and Melvin Miller (2027). All of them wrestle for Bishop McCort (Pa.), which is considered one of, if not the top high school wrestling team in the country this year.
Other top prospect Jax Forrest, who’s No. 2 pound for pound, is Bassett’s teammate. He revealed his top 10 schools back in September, but has not eliminated nor provided a recent update as he goes about his visits.
“Some wrestlers don’t like this process, but I can honestly say I am really enjoying it,” Bassett said in a previous newsletter. “My view is, I only get to do the recruiting process once, so I am going to enjoy it and have fun with it. I sometimes like to do things different and hope everyone likes these updates.
“When I was in elementary school, I would have done anything to follow along with Spencer Lee, Jason Nolf or Zain Retherford recruiting process.”
Bo Bassett, the top wrestling prospect in the nation, is receiving some high praise from a fellow Penn State standout. Micah Parsons, a star linebacker for the Nittany Lions football team, recently gave his pitch to Bassett about joining the Penn State wrestling program. In a recent interview, Parsons spoke highly of the wrestling program at Penn State and the opportunities it provides for student-athletes. He highlighted the strong coaching staff, the winning tradition, and the supportive community at Penn State.
Parsons also emphasized the benefits of being a student-athlete at Penn State, pointing to the world-class facilities, academic support, and networking opportunities available to student-athletes.
With Bassett being one of the most sought-after wrestling recruits in the country, it’s no surprise that Penn State is making a strong push to land him. And with Parsons’ endorsement, it’s clear that the Nittany Lions have a compelling pitch to offer the talented young wrestler.
It remains to be seen where Bassett will ultimately decide to take his talents, but with the backing of Micah Parsons and the Penn State wrestling program, the Nittany Lions are certainly in a strong position to land the standout prospect. Stay tuned for more updates on Bo Bassett’s recruitment process.
