  • Top-ranked UCLA making most of 8-day East Coast trip on and off the court

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — UCLA is making the most of its eight-day road trip to the East Coast.

There have been a lot of firsts for the top-ranked Bruins on this eastern odyssey that will see the team play three games. It’s the longest road trip that coach Cori Close can remember during her time at the school — especially in the middle of the season.

It started with a victory over No. 25 Baylor in New Jersey in the inaugural Coretta Scott King Classic and then continued with a win over Big Ten foe Rutgers. The trip will conclude in Maryland against the eighth-ranked Terrapins.

In between the Baylor and Rutgers games, the Bruins got to spend time in New York exploring the city. A boat trip to the Statue of Liberty, a visit to the Empire State Building and 9/11 Museum as well as a stop on Broadway to see “Hell’s Kitchen” highlighted their day.

“It’s really cool because some of us had never been to a Broadway show before,” said center Lauren Betts, who averaged 24.5 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks in the two games in New Jersey. “And so I thought that was just a really cool experience. And we got to meet the cast after, which is like, amazing. … Some of us got on the stage and try to recreate the songs and sing, which obviously did not go so well.”

The Bruins also were in the area for the winter storm that brought snow to the tri-state area. For some of the players it was their first time seeing snow in person.

It’s not all fun for the Bruins, who are back in class as UCLA is on the quarter system. It hasn’t been a normal academic period with the wildfires in Los Angeles making classes remote.

“Obviously with the tragedy of the fires back home, a lot of the lectures moved to online learning so the whole quarter has not been consistent so far,” said Andrew Garcia, who is UCLA’s associate director of student athlete success for the team. “I think for me, the challenge has been, ‘How do I bring that sense of normalcy and consistency into their routine?’”

Garcia said he works with the players and professors to know when class work is due, which is a little more complicated with the time difference between the two coasts.

Junior guard Kiki Rice said she and others on the team speak with professors at the beginning of the year to let them know their schedule ahead of time.

“They’re well aware that, that we’re not able to make it because we’re on the road or we have a game,” she said. “But it’s still difficult just because UCLA is obviously a great school and we pride ourselves on being great students.”

Close sees this trip as well as the one the team took to Paris to start the season as educational experiences as well as basketball ones.

“We got to have education in 3D. I think that is really important for a lot of our players that went from something they have seen in movies and read in textbooks to I experienced it,” she said. “We went to the top of the Eiffel Tower. We did that earlier this year in Paris. And the Empire State Building is the second time I’ve done that. … I just think those are probably not going to be the things they talk about now, but my responsibility is to create experiences that they remember later that bridge the gap between education in the classroom.”

Close also said she asks the team for feedback since this is the first year the Bruins are in the coast-to-coast Big Ten Conference.

“We’ve already made some adjustments in our itinerary moving forward,” she said. “So, I just think that’s going to be the way it is all year long. We chose this and we want to be a part of the best conference. Doesn’t make it that it’s not really hard, but we’re going to have to make adjustments as we go.”

UCLA Men’s Basketball Team Making the Most of 8-Day East Coast Trip

The top-ranked UCLA men’s basketball team is taking full advantage of their 8-day East Coast road trip, both on and off the court. With a combination of intense practices, team bonding activities, and sightseeing, the Bruins are making the most of their time away from home.

On the court, UCLA has been dominating their opponents, showcasing their talent and teamwork with impressive wins against some tough East Coast competition. The team’s chemistry and communication have been on full display, with players stepping up and making big plays when it matters most.

Off the court, the Bruins have been exploring the sights and sounds of the East Coast, taking in the rich history and culture of the cities they visit. From visiting historical landmarks to trying out local cuisine, the team is immersing themselves in the experience and creating lasting memories together.

Overall, UCLA is proving that they are not only a force to be reckoned with on the court but also a tight-knit group that knows how to make the most of their time together. With their sights set on a national championship, the Bruins are making every moment count during their East Coast trip.

  • Golf fans question withdrawals of top-ranked players amid PGA-LIV Golf deal uncertainty

The golf world is abuzz with skepticism as several top-ranked players, including Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Collin Morikawa, have either withdrawn from or skipped multiple PGA Tour events in 2025. While injuries and scheduling conflicts are cited as reasons, some fans and analysts are questioning whether the absences are tied to the unresolved PGA Tour and LIV Golf merger deal.

    Social media speculation sparks debate

Prominent golf analyst ProGolfCritic (PGC) stoked the flames on social media, suggesting that top players might be holding out until the PGA-LIV agreement is finalized.

“I had heard unsubstantiated rumors that some top players were going to hold out of tournaments until this deal got done,” PGC posted on X.

PGC further pointed out the conspicuous absences of the world’s top four players from early 2025 PGA Tour events, saying:

“So now Scottie, Rory, Xander & Morikawa have either not played/WD’d from 2025 PGAT events. They are currently 1-2-3-4 in OWGR. Purely coincidental I’m sure.”

    The PGA-LIV deadlock

The PGA Tour and LIV Golf announced a framework agreement in June 2023, aiming to unify professional golf under one structure. However, progress has stalled, with no concrete resolutions after months of optimistic statements from leaders on both sides. Speculation abounds that disagreements over money, power, and control are delaying the deal, fueling uncertainty across the sport.

The other side of the debate

Not everyone is buying into the conspiracy theories. CBS golf commentator Colt Knost quickly dismissed the rumors, citing recent appearances by Morikawa and Schauffele at The Sentry and Sony Open as evidence.

“These are false rumors. Morikawa and Schauffele have already played this year. Scheffler is genuinely injured,” Knost asserted.

Knost’s defense highlights the chaotic nature of the current golf landscape, where uncertainty and speculation thrive.

    A turbulent time for golf

Over the past few years, the divide between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf has created an unprecedented level of tension and chaos in the sport. With no definitive resolution in sight, even the smallest actions—or inactions—by top players are scrutinized and theorized.

While there’s no concrete evidence that these withdrawals are connected to the merger talks, the optics are undoubtedly fueling intrigue. As fans wait for clarity on the future of professional golf, the absence of its biggest stars only adds to the drama.

    What’s next?

As the golf world continues to navigate this uncertain period, the focus will remain on the players’ schedules and performances. Whether these withdrawals are coincidental or indicative of larger forces at play, one thing is certain: the 2025 season will be remembered as a pivotal chapter in the sport’s history.

As the PGA-LIV Golf deal remains in limbo, fans of the sport are starting to question the withdrawals of several top-ranked players from upcoming tournaments. With uncertainty surrounding the future of professional golf and the potential impact of the proposed merger, many are wondering if these withdrawals are a sign of things to come.

Speculation has been rife in recent weeks about the potential implications of the PGA-LIV Golf deal, with concerns raised about the impact on player earnings, tournament schedules, and the overall structure of the sport. As a result, some players have opted to sit out of upcoming events until more clarity is provided on the situation.

While it is understandable that players may want to wait and see how things play out before committing to tournaments, fans are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of transparency and communication from both the PGA and LIV Golf. Many are calling for more information to be shared with the public, as well as assurances that the interests of players and fans will be prioritized in any potential merger.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the PGA-LIV Golf deal will ultimately impact the world of professional golf. In the meantime, fans are left to wonder what the future holds for their favorite players and the sport as a whole.

  • College basketball rankings: No. 2 Duke coming on strong, not far behind top-ranked Auburn

Auburn is No. 1 in the CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings for the 13th consecutive morning and will likely also remain No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll for the second straight week when it updates Monday.

But keep an eye on Duke.

While Auburn’s best player, Johni Broome, remains sidelined with an ankle injury suffered nine days ago, Duke’s best player, Cooper Flagg, has emerged as the favorite to become the youngest Wooden Award winner in history. Also true: Duke and Auburn are now co-favorites to win the 2025 NCAA Tournament at +500, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

It’s inarguable, at this point, that Auburn has the sport’s best body of work — a 17-1 record highlighted by a 10-1 mark inside Quadrant 1. The Tigers deserve their No. 1 ranking. But if they were to lose Saturday to Tennessee while Duke extends its winning streak to 13 games via a victory at Wake Forest on the same day, the Blue Devils and Tigers would then both be 17-2 through 19 contests, and, given that Duke already owns a win over Auburn and is already ahead of the Tigers in some computers, I would expect Duke to then move to No. 1 under that scenario.

For now, though, it’s Auburn at No. 1 and Duke at No. 2 in Monday morning’s updated Top 25 And 1 — and I don’t see any reason that will change until at least Sunday morning considering neither Auburn nor Duke play again until Saturday.

    Anyway …

Did you look at Monday’s schedule?

There are no ranked teams in action. So we’re all pretty freed up to watch the College Football Playoff Championship game between Ohio State  and Notre Dame. The Buckeyes are listed as 8.5-point favorites. On Sunday’s episode of the Eye On College Basketball Podcast, I picked Ohio State.

But I stink at picking games. So you should probably take the Irish.

Either way, enjoy it! Without the 12-team playoff, this matchup wouldn’t even be possible. So, regardless of who wins, I’m mostly just rooting for a fun and compelling game that leaves no silly people any room to try to suggest the old way was a better way.

    Top 25 And 1 rankings

In the latest college basketball rankings, No. 2 Duke is making a strong push towards the top spot currently held by Auburn. Duke has been on a hot streak, winning their last five games and showing why they are one of the top teams in the country.

Led by star players like Paolo Banchero and Trevor Keels, Duke has been dominating on both ends of the floor and making a strong case for the number one ranking. With impressive wins over top teams like Gonzaga and Kentucky, the Blue Devils are proving that they are a force to be reckoned with.

While Auburn currently holds the top spot in the rankings, Duke is not far behind and is poised to take over the number one spot if they can continue their winning ways. With March Madness right around the corner, it will be interesting to see how these two powerhouse teams stack up against each other in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned for more updates on the college basketball rankings as Duke looks to overtake Auburn and claim the top spot for themselves.

Ohio State blasts top-ranked Oregon 41-21 in the Rose Bowl

Jeremiah Smith caught two of Will Howard’s three long touchdown passes during Ohio State’s sensational 34-point first half, and the No. 6 Buckeyes roared into the College Football Playoff semifinals with a 41-21 victory over No. 1 Oregon in the 111th Rose Bowl Game on Wednesday night.

Howard passed for 319 yards, Emeka Egbuka also caught a long TD pass and TreVeyon Henderson made a 66-yard touchdown run in a redemptive Rose Bowl for the Buckeyes (12-2, CFP No. 8 seed), whose big-game execution sometimes hasn’t matched their formidable talent this season.

Ohio State has seized the second chances created by the first 12-team CFP, emphatically blowing out the tournament’s No. 1 seed. The Buckeyes scored on six of their first seven drives and took a 34-0 lead late in the second quarter on the nation’s only remaining unbeaten team in the Granddaddy of Them All.

Ohio State is headed to the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 10 to face No. 4 Texas for a berth in the national title game. The Longhorns barely advanced earlier Wednesday, holding off Arizona State 39-31 in a double-overtime Peach Bowl.

Dillon Gabriel passed for 299 yards and hit Traeshon Holden for two touchdowns for the Ducks (13-1, CFP No. 1 seed), whose dreams of their first national title were flattened on the famed Rose Bowl turf. Oregon’s 14-game winning streak also ended.

Eleven days after routing Tennessee to open the Playoff, Ohio State dominated this rematch of these Big Ten teams’ regular-season thriller, won 32-31 by the Ducks in Eugene on Oct. 12. The Ohio State defense that couldn’t sack Gabriel in the teams’ first meeting dropped the Heisman Trophy finalist eight times in the rematch.

Smith, the Buckeyes’ standout freshman playmaker, had a remarkable bowl debut with seven receptions for 187 yards — including five catches for 161 yards in the first half alone, hauling in scoring passes of 45 and 43 yards.

Ohio State turned the CFP’s most anticipated quarterfinal matchup into a long celebration at the Rose Bowl, which has hosted several thrilling, close games in recent Januaries. This one pitted two powerhouse programs widely considered to have the top two teams left in the inaugural 12-team Playoff, but the Buckeyes scored early and often at the Rose Bowl.

The Big Ten champion Ducks couldn’t make any offensive headway until they trailed by 34 points, failing to create any of the big plays that carried the Ducks to victory in Eugene.

After the usual pregame pageantry in 70-degree sunshine at the venerable stadium in Arroyo Seco, Ohio State needed just three plays and 49 seconds to strike first. Howard threw a short play-action screen pass to Smith, who motored through Oregon’s secondary for a 45-yard score.

On the Buckeyes’ third drive, Howard feathered an exceptional long pass over three Ducks to the sprinting Egbuka for a 42-yard TD. Howard finished the first quarter with a career-best 212 yards passing, surpassing his 160 yards during Ohio State’s hot start against Tennessee.

Early in the second quarter, Smith got so open near the Ducks’ goal line that he had two seconds to settle under Howard’s long throw like an outfielder with a fly ball, scoring a 42-yard TD untouched.

When Henderson broke a 66-yard TD run down the Oregon sideline for a 31-0 lead, both sides of the Rose Bowl stands rippled with disbelief.

Oregon finally got moving on its final drive before halftime. Gabriel found Holden for a 5-yard TD pass at the gun, and the Ducks added a two-point conversion to salvage something from their horrific half.

The Ducks drove for Noah Whittington’s 2-yard TD run to open the second half, scoring the first touchdown allowed in the third quarter all season by Ohio State. Oregon even forced a punt moments later to stir faint hope in its fans, but the Ohio State defense drove the Buckeyes backward for a punt before Howard’s group methodically drove for Henderson’s second TD.

This was the third time the Ducks and Buckeyes met up in the Rose Bowl. Ohio State beat Oregon in 1958, 2010 and now 2025.

The two teams also met earlier this season, when the Ducks held off the Buckeyes with a one-point win. Oregon went on to become the Big Ten champions in their first season with the conference.

Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith (4) makes a catch as Oregon defensive back Dontae Manning (8) defends during the first half in the quarterfinals of the Rose Bowl College Football Playoff, Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025, in Pasadena, Calif.

The recent history between the Ducks and Buckeyes has been of the high-stakes variety since the 2010 Rose Bowl, continuing in the first title game of the four-team CFP after the 2014 season, and carrying over to their first meeting as Big Ten foes in the thrilling 32-31 Oregon win at Autzen Stadium on Oct. 12. That game was decided by big plays from Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel as a passer and runner, plus some clever gamesmanship from head coach Dan Lanning that has since been outlawed. That victory also helped propel Oregon to the conference title, defeating Penn State 45-37 on Dec. 7.

The Buckeyes expected their second crack to come in Indianapolis, but were sidetracked by a shocking rivalry loss to Michigan. Ohio State bounced back by crushing Tennessee 42-17 in a CFP first-round game on Dec. 21.

    Takeaways

Ohio State: The full force of the Buckeyes’ talent has been on display for the past two weeks after it fell short against Oregon and Michigan in the regular season. The 12-team playoff opened the chance for redemption. This group is seizing it, and it’s awfully fun to watch.

Oregon: Having 3 1/2 weeks off with their first-round bye proved to be dangerous for the Ducks. This disconcerting flop doesn’t completely ruin a breakthrough Big Ten debut, but the season will always loom as a missed opportunity in Oregon history.

    Up next

Ohio State: The Cotton Bowl will be a preview of both teams’ 2025 season opener, since Texas visits Ohio Stadium on Aug. 30.

Oregon: The 2025 season opener is at home against Montana State, which faces North Dakota State in the FCS title game Monday night.

OPB staff contributed to this reporting.

In a stunning upset, Ohio State dominated top-ranked Oregon in the Rose Bowl, securing a 41-21 victory. The Buckeyes came out firing on all cylinders, showcasing a potent offense and stifling defense that kept the Ducks on their heels throughout the game.

Quarterback CJ Stroud led the charge for Ohio State, throwing for over 300 yards and three touchdowns. The Buckeyes’ ground game was equally impressive, with running back TreVeyon Henderson rushing for over 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Ohio State was relentless, forcing multiple turnovers and keeping Oregon’s high-powered offense in check. The Buckeyes’ secondary was particularly impressive, coming up with key interceptions and limiting big plays from the Ducks’ dynamic receiving corps.

The victory marked a statement win for Ohio State, solidifying their status as a powerhouse in college football. With this impressive performance, the Buckeyes have set their sights on a national championship run and have proven that they can compete with the best teams in the country.

Men’s basketball AP poll: Watch top-ranked Tennessee, Florida and Oklahoma as SEC play opens this week

Saturday in the SEC should be a great start to conference play. (Luke Hales/Getty Images)

The college basketball world, at least in the SEC, is about to get a lot more entertaining.

Here’s everything you missed in Week 8 of the college basketball season, and the latest Associated Press men’s basketball poll.

It was a very quiet week over the holidays, and not much changed at the top of the rankings. Tennessee retained the No. 1 spot on Monday, followed again by Auburn, Iowa State, Duke and Alabama. In fact, the first 13 teams stayed the same from last week. The biggest improvement came from UCLA, which jumped up seven spots to No. 15 after it beat Gonzaga 65-62 on Saturday. That pushed the Bruins to 11-2 and made up for last week’s two-point loss to North Carolina.

SEC play gets going this week, however, and we should learn a few things very quickly.

Let’s start with the Vols, who will host No. 23 Arkansas on Saturday. It marks the first legitimate matchup for Tennessee since it snuck past Illinois on a game-winner from Jordan Gainey earlier this month. The game with the Razorbacks will serve as a good precursor for next Tuesday’s game at undefeated Florida.

Speaking of the Gators, they’ll enter SEC play with a perfect 13-0 record. It’s the best start for the program since the 2005-06 season. While five of Florida’s wins have come against power conference opponents, they’ve yet to play another ranked team. That’ll change when they travel to Rupp Arena and play No. 10 Kentucky on Saturday morning — which will mark the first of three straight ranked games.

We’ll see if this Gators team is as good as their record shows in the coming days.

“We definitely feel like we’re prepared [for SEC play],” guard Walter Clayton Jr. said after their 40-point win over Stetson on Sunday, via the Gainesville Sun. “There’s obviously things we got to fix up. Just been a lot of learning through winning. So just continue to learn, not be complacent and I think we’ll be ready.”

Finally, let’s talk about No. 12 Oklahoma. The Sooners are in a similar position as Florida. They’ll enter conference play still undefeated, but they’ve beaten just two ranked opponents so far this season. After sneaking past Michigan on a wild four-point play earlier this month, they’ve rolled over Central Arkansas and Prairie View en route to what is their best start in three decades.

Oklahoma will take on No. 5 Alabama first on Saturday in its first conference game since joining the SEC. While making it through one of the best conferences in the sport unscathed is likely impossible, and the Crimson Tide don’t look like they’ve missed a step after last spring’s Final Four run, a strong showing for the Sooners against Alabama can go a long way in proving they are capable of hanging with the conference’s best this winter.

As SEC play opens this week, all eyes are on the top-ranked teams in men’s college basketball. Tennessee, Florida, and Oklahoma are all looking to make a statement as they begin conference play.

Tennessee has been dominant so far this season, boasting an impressive 10-1 record and earning the top spot in the AP poll. Led by head coach Rick Barnes and a talented roster, the Volunteers are poised to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

Florida, currently ranked 8th in the AP poll, has also had a strong start to the season with a 9-2 record. The Gators have shown they can compete with the best teams in the country and will be looking to prove themselves in SEC play.

Oklahoma, ranked 12th in the AP poll, has been a pleasant surprise this season. Led by star player Austin Reaves, the Sooners have a 7-2 record and are looking to make some noise in the Big 12 conference.

As SEC play gets underway, all three of these teams will be looking to assert their dominance and prove they belong among the nation’s elite. Keep an eye on Tennessee, Florida, and Oklahoma as they battle it out in conference play.

While five of Florida’s wins have come against Power 5 opponents, they’ve yet to play another ranked team.
