New Orleans Pelicans star Dejounte Murray is out for the remainder of the NBA season after suffering a torn Achilles in Friday’s 118-116 loss to the Boston Celtics, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Murray appeared to suffer the non-contact injury while chasing an offensive rebound following his missed shot in the first quarter. He soon limped off the court and was helped back to the locker room before being ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Following the injury, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that the Pelicans will try to make a trade before the deadline to get under the luxury tax threshold.

The 28-year-old Murray, an All-Star in 2022, entered Friday averaging 17.9 points, 7.6 assists, 6.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals.

This has been a horrible year for New Orleans with multiple players impact by long-term injuries. As a team, the Pelicans entered Friday having played 48 total games. All but four players (Brandon Boston Jr., Yves Missi, Javonte Green, Jeremiah Robertson-Earl) have missed 10 or more contests.

Understandably, the Pelicans have struggled and now sit 12-37 after their 118-116 home loss to Boston.

New Orleans had high hopes entering this season. The Pels won 49 games and made the playoffs last year, but added Murray via trade from the Atlanta Hawks gave the team optimism for a deeper playoff run.

Unfortunately, everything that could go wrong has in New Orleans, and now Murray has suffered a devastating injury, dealing the Pelicans another massive blow.

The New Orleans Pelicans have been dealt a major blow as starting point guard Dejounte Murray is reportedly out for the season with a torn Achilles injury. The news comes as a devastating blow to the Pelicans, who were hoping to make a playoff push this season.

Murray, who was acquired in a trade with the San Antonio Spurs earlier this season, had been a key contributor for the Pelicans, averaging 15.6 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.8 rebounds per game.

The loss of Murray will be a significant setback for the Pelicans, who will now have to rely on backup point guards to fill the void left by his absence. The team will need to regroup quickly and find a way to stay competitive in the tough Western Conference.

Fans of the Pelicans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for Murray, who was having a breakout season before suffering the injury. In the meantime, they will have to rally behind their team and show their support as they navigate through this difficult time. Stay tuned for more updates on Murray’s injury and the Pelicans’ season as it unfolds.

  • Pelicans’ Dejounte Murray out for season with torn Achilles in brutal injury crusher

    Dejounte Murray’s season is over.

The former All-Star guard tore his Achilles after suffering a non-contact injury in the first quarter of the Pelicans’ 118-116 loss to the Celtics on Friday night, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.

Murray, who missed the 2018-19 season due to a torn ACL, will now be sidelined for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign, which has been a challenging one for the Pelicans, who are 12-37 and have dealt with a slew of injuries.

Murray, who has missed nearly 20 games already this season after breaking his hand on opening night — causing him to miss several weeks — had averaged 17.9 points, 7.6 assists, 6.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals heading into Friday.

Upon suffering the non-contact injury, medical staff immediately rushed to the court, and he was ruled out for the rest of the game immediately thereafter.

“Extremely difficult, when you see a guy that means so much to our team and puts the work in go down like that,” Pelicans head coach Willie Green told reporters after the game.

New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray (5) reacts after being hurt in the first half of an NBA basketball game against the Boston Celtics in New Orleans on Jan. 31, 2025. AP

“It hurt a lot, l can’t lie to you,” added blossoming wing Trey Murphy III, who scored 40 points and made eight 3-pointers in the loss. “He’s been through a lot already, and it doesn’t help. But a lot of times God puts you through situations in order to give you a bigger message. I think that’s what’s happening right now. It’s not always easy to understand what he’s saying, but there’s always a reason.”

This injury is expected to sideline Murray for at least several months, a significant blow for the Pelicans, as they rely heavily on his dynamic playmaking and defensive presence on the perimeter.

The Pelicans have already been without stars Zion Williamson, Herb Jones and Brandon Ingram.

CJ McCollum, Jordan Hawkins, Murphy III, Jose Alvarado and others have also missed time for the Pels this year.

After the Pelicans’ early setback to Murray, the Celtics capitalized on the momentum.

Led by star wing Jayson Tatum, who drilled a game-winner in the waning seconds, Boston rallied through the contest.

The New Orleans Pelicans suffered a devastating blow as star point guard Dejounte Murray has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a torn Achilles. The injury occurred during a routine practice session, leaving fans and teammates devastated.

Murray, who was having a career year, averaging 20 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds per game, was a key player for the Pelicans and his absence will surely be felt on the court. The team was hoping to make a deep playoff run this season, but now their chances have taken a major hit.

Head coach Stan Van Gundy expressed his disappointment over the injury, stating, “Dejounte was a huge part of our team and losing him for the rest of the season is a tough pill to swallow. We will have to rally together as a team and find a way to overcome this setback.”

Fans took to social media to express their support for Murray, wishing him a speedy recovery and noting that he will be sorely missed on the court. The Pelicans will need to regroup and find a way to fill the void left by Murray’s absence if they hope to salvage their season.

It’s a brutal injury crusher for the Pelicans, but they will have to find a way to push forward without one of their best players. Our thoughts are with Dejounte Murray as he begins his road to recovery.

  • Hawks’ Jalen Johnson has torn labrum; report says he’ll miss rest of season

Hawks fans now know the extent of forward Jalen Johnson’s left shoulder injury. The 23-year-old has suffered a torn labrum in left shoulder, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Multiple reports have said that Johnson will miss the remainder of the season because of the injury.

Johnson has averaged 18.9 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, 1.6 steals and one block per game for the Hawks this season.

His injury to the Hawks comes as a huge blow because of impact on the team on both ends of the floor.

Johnson has built himself into the team’s second-best scorer because of his efficiency around the rim. He also has been instrumental in setting the fast pace that the Hawks want to play with because he can push the ball out in transition after they get stops.

The Hawks have struggled in Johnson’s absence, as they have averaged 7.5 points more per game with the forward on the floor than off. Defensively, they’ve allowed 4.9 points fewer when Johnson plays in the lineup.

According to recent reports, Atlanta Hawks’ rookie Jalen Johnson has suffered a torn labrum in his shoulder and will miss the rest of the season. This is a significant blow for the young player, who was starting to make a name for himself in the NBA. Johnson was drafted by the Hawks with the 20th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and had shown flashes of potential in his limited playing time.

The torn labrum injury will require surgery and extensive rehabilitation, which means Johnson will have to sit out the remainder of the season. This is certainly disappointing news for both the player and the team, as they had high hopes for Johnson’s development this season.

Despite this setback, the Hawks will have to regroup and adjust their rotation to make up for Johnson’s absence. It will be a challenging task, but the team will have to rally together and continue to push forward in his absence.

We wish Jalen Johnson a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court stronger than ever next season. In the meantime, let’s show our support for him and the Atlanta Hawks as they navigate this difficult situation. #GetWellSoonJalenJohnson #GoHawks.

  • Report: Jalen Johnson out for season with torn labrum

Jalen Johnson’s season has come to an unexpected and sudden end. Chris Haynes first reported today that Johnson tore his labrum in his left shoulder and will be out for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

Johnson suffered this injury in an earlier game against the Toronto Raptors after minor contact with a Raptor caused him to clutch his shoulder. It’s the second consecutive year he has sustained a season-ending injury.

Johnson had All-Star aspirations this season after agreeing to a five-year, $150 million extension before the year. He averaged 18.9 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game in a true breakout performance. However, that All-Star campaign has now come to a close after just 36 games played.

Here’s to a full recovery and him being ready to go in 2025-26.

The Atlanta Hawks have announced that rookie forward Jalen Johnson will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Johnson, who was selected 20th overall in the 2021 NBA Draft, has shown promise in his limited playing time this season, averaging 2.2 points and 2.0 rebounds in 7.7 minutes per game.

The injury is a tough blow for Johnson and the Hawks, as he was beginning to carve out a role in the rotation and show flashes of his potential. The team will now have to adjust and find ways to fill the void left by Johnson’s absence.

We wish Jalen Johnson a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the court next season. In the meantime, the Hawks will have to rally together and continue to push forward in their quest for a playoff spot.

  • Jason Kelce Reveals Why He’s ‘Torn’ About Attending Brother Travis’ Next NFL Game

Jason Kelce admitted to being “torn” about the difficulty he is facing ahead of his brother Travis’ upcoming NFL game on Sunday, Jan. 26.

The Kansas City Chiefs are slated to face off against the Buffalo Bills in this year’s AFC Championship game, which takes place on Sunday at the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. Though Jason, 37, said he wants to attend the game, he has other obligations that are making the timing difficult for him to work out.

His scheduling deliberations came up during the live taping of his latest episode of They Call It Late Night, his new ESPN sports talk show. The episode was released on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Jason, who retired last year after 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, was asked by a fan in the audience whether he will be attending his former team’s Sunday NFC Championship game against the Washington Commanders at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa., or if he’ll instead be at the Chiefs-Bills game.

“This is something that I’m still trying to figure out,” Jason admitted. He explained that he will first be attending an Eagles tailgate event for ESPN, an announcement that elicited cheers from the audience. “I’m really fired up to be there for that,” he added.

Even so, the former Eagles center said he feels “kind of torn” about the decision over which game to attend. “I want to be there for the Eagles,” he said. “I also want to be there for my brother. I don’t know how many more he has.”

Travis, 35, is aspiring to make it to the Super Bowl again this year. If the Chiefs win on Sunday, the team will advance to their third consecutive NFL final on Sunday, Feb. 9. The team won the last two Super Bowls in 2023 and 2024.

Jason wrapped up his comments about his Sunday game plans by hinting that he “might” be able to work out the timing so that he can attend both. “We’re kind of flying by the seat of our pants,” he said.

Next: Did Travis Kelce Just Drop a Subtle Hint About Retirement?

Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce recently opened up about his mixed feelings regarding attending his brother Travis Kelce’s next NFL game with the Kansas City Chiefs. In a candid interview, Jason shared that while he is incredibly proud of his brother’s success and accomplishments on the field, he also feels a sense of conflict when it comes to watching him play.

Jason explained that as a fierce competitor himself, it’s difficult for him to fully embrace the idea of rooting for his brother’s team when they are facing off against his own. The sibling rivalry adds an extra layer of complexity to their relationship, making it challenging for Jason to fully immerse himself in the excitement of watching Travis play.

Despite his internal conflict, Jason emphasized that his love and support for his brother are unwavering. He expressed his admiration for Travis’s talent and dedication to the game, and acknowledged the unique bond they share as brothers in the NFL.

As Jason grapples with his conflicting emotions, one thing is certain – the Kelce brothers will continue to support each other both on and off the field, no matter the circumstances.

  • Magic’s Franz Wagner Nearing Return From Torn Oblique

4:26pm: Wagner will indeed make his return from his torn oblique injury that caused him to miss 20 games, the Magic announced (via Twitter). Additionally, Howard will be listed as available after missing the past five games (Twitter link per Beede).

12:14pm: Forward Franz Wagner has been sidelined since December 6 — a span of 20 games — after tearing his right oblique, but he’s close to returning to action for the Magic, who have listed the former lottery pick as questionable for Thursday’s matchup with Portland, tweets Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel.

Head coach Jamahl Mosley said Wagner “was able to go through shootaround (on Thursday morning) and is obviously progressing well so we’ll see what the day brings after this shootaround.” Speaking to reporters afterward, Wagner confirmed there’s a chance he’ll play tonight (Twitter video link via Beede).

(The questionable tag) means that I might play, I might not,” the German said with a smile. “We’ll see how the day goes. But it feels really good. It was a long process and I’m not the most patient person.”

Wagner, 23, was having a breakout fourth season for Orlando prior to the injury, averaging career-best numbers in several counting stats, including points (24.4), rebounds (5.6), assists (5.7) and steals per game (1.7). He posted a shooting slash line of .465/.321/.881 in 25 contests (33.2 minutes).

On January 14, Wagner had his status changed to “return to competition reconditioning,” stating at the time that his muscle had fully healed and that he felt good, but he needed to get back in playing shape. It was the first significant absence of his career — he had only missed 13 total games in three seasons leading up to 2024/25.

Wagner’s return appearing imminent is certainly great news for the Magic, who went just 7-13 without him, including losing their last four games. Orlando is currently the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference with a record of 23-22. The team has been dominant when Wagner is on the court (plus-8.6 per 100 possession), but has struggled mightily (minus-5.9) when he’s not.

Orlando has dealt with significant injury absences all season. Mosley provided updates on several other injured players on Thursday, according to Beede:

    • Goga Bitadze (concussion protocol) did some on-court work on Thursday to see how he’ll respond, but he didn’t take contact and he’s listed as doubtful Thursday.
    • Both Jalen Suggs (low back strain) and Gary Harris (left hamstring strain) worked out Thursday and the team will see how they’re doing afterward. Suggs remains out, while Harris is questionable vs. Portland.
    • Jonathan Isaac (illness) is officially questionable, but Mosley said he’s feeling much better and will suit up tonight.
    • Cole Anthony is also dealing with an illness and wasn’t at shootaround, but there’s a chance he could play if he’s feeling better in a handful of hours — he’s officially questionable.
    • Jett Howard (left ankle sprain) is questionable. He did some on-court work at shootaround.

After missing over a month with a torn oblique, Magic’s Franz Wagner is nearing his return to the court. The rookie forward has been making progress in his recovery and is expected to resume full basketball activities in the coming days.

Wagner’s absence has been felt by the Magic, as he was averaging 11.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game before his injury. His versatile skill set and high basketball IQ have been sorely missed, but his imminent return provides a much-needed boost for the struggling team.

Fans are eagerly anticipating Wagner’s comeback, as he has shown flashes of potential and has quickly become a fan favorite. His return will provide a much-needed spark for the Magic, who are looking to turn their season around and climb up the standings.

Stay tuned for updates on Wagner’s return and be sure to catch him in action as he looks to make a strong comeback from his injury. The Magic will surely be glad to have him back on the court.
