  • Islanders Gameday News: Tough trip, more injuries, keep going

The Islanders attempt to continue this improbable hot run — seven wins in a row, and 10 in 12 — with even more challenges as they head to south Florida for the back end of a back-to-back. Last night required extra time, but only 33 seconds of it, but they also have the further of injuries to Scott Mayfield and Mat Barzal, both of whom left the win over the Lightning.

Updates on those guys are likely to come shortly before the game; Mayfield’s incident looked like a joint, Barzal’s an impact from a shot block that appeared right above the knee. We’ll see.

One fun wrinkle for tonight is Adam Boqvist, who scored in his debut last night, facing the team that considered him surplus and waived him. I’m sure we’ll see why he’s bounced around in his young career (injuries also a factor) soon enough, but last night at least we saw some of his strengths on display.

Leave First Islanders Goal picks here.

    Islanders News

    • About last night: Gutsy win, more injuries. [Isles | LHH | Post]
    • This injury update is already outdated given the Tampa game, but Noah Dobson and Ryan Pulock should skate during the 4 Nations break, while Semyon Varlamov is out indefinitely, and Marcus Hogberg should hopefully be ready after the break. Lou Lamoriello also talked about what he said to Isaiah George, all encouraging, in assigning him back to the AHL. [Post | Newsday]
    • Previewing tonight: Can they make it eight? They owe the Panthers one, as last meeting in October they blew a 3-0 lead to lose 6-3. [Isles]
    • The Skinny: This is the 9th time in club history that the Isles have won at least seven straight…they’ve outscored the opposition 24-9 during this streak. [Isles]
    • A storybook start to Tony DeAngelo’s start with the Islanders. [THN]
    • And the other storybook start, Boqvist — was the secret wearing gloves labeled for Beauvillier? [THN]

    Elsewhere

Saturday’s other NHL scores included the Smurfs losing in J.T. Miller’s return, and tonight’s foe the Panthers winning at home over the Blackhawks.

    • MOAR trades. The Stars are dealing with Islanders-like injury blows, so they acquired Cody Ceci and Mikael Granlund from the Sharks for draft picks. [NHL]
    • And this is a little old, but shortly after completing the J.T. Miller trade the Canucks flipped the 1st-rounder and some depth to the Penguins for Marcus Pettersson, among other things. [NHL]
    • Ryan Hartman, generally seen as a dick, will have an in-person hearing for driving Tom Stutzle’s face into the ice on a faceoff. He seemed bemused when given a match penalty, so either he really is such a dick, or maaaaaybe it was a faceoff move that ended up way worse than he intended? [NHL | Sportsnet]
    • Probably the latter. It came as the Senators torched the Wild, 6-0. [Sportsnet]
    • Patrik Allvin faced the media on the whole Miller trade and assorted drama. [TSN]
    • All about the jerseys for the 4 Nations tournament. [NHL]

Despite the setbacks, the Islanders are not backing down. The team is determined to keep pushing forward and fighting for wins. With a never-say-die attitude, the Islanders are ready to face whatever challenges come their way.

  • Liverpool pass ‘tough challenge’ with flying colours

Liverpool are still progressing nicely in all competitions. They finished top in the league phase of the Champions League to jump into the last 16, are in the fourth round of the FA Cup and on Thursday entertain Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit after the first leg of their semi-final and get to Wembley.

In an interview with Football Focus on Saturday, Slot, who became Reds manager last summer following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, said he could not have expected to have such a lead.

Slot knows what it is like to win a championship, having won the Dutch Eredivisie with Feyenoord and, worryingly for Liverpool’s title rivals, the Reds are not showing any signs of slipping up.

This latest win extends their unbeaten league run to 19, since they were beaten 1-0 at home by Forest on 14 September.

“It was a battle, but I knew it would be,” added Slot. “All the points we have got, we have deserved them.”

Goalkeeper Alisson hailed his side’s mental strength and said: “It’s a great result away from home. We showed great desire, mentality and great quality.

“Bournemouth are really intense. They are top for running, intensity – the way they play, they’re aggressive. You have to be focused and really sharp in every situation.

“This intensity takes a lot of energy to win these games. The Premier League is a high standard this season.”

But with less than four months to go, Liverpool remain the standard setters and will take some stopping if they are to not win their first title in five seasons.

Liverpool pass ‘tough challenge’ with flying colours

Liverpool FC put on an impressive display as they passed a ‘tough challenge’ with flying colours in their latest match. The team showed great resilience and determination to secure a convincing victory, showcasing their strength and skill on the pitch.

From the opening whistle, Liverpool dominated the game, controlling possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Their attacking play was sharp and incisive, while their defense remained solid and organized throughout the match.

Key players stepped up to the challenge, with standout performances from the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Virgil van Dijk. The team worked together seamlessly, showcasing their chemistry and teamwork to secure a well-deserved win.

Manager Jurgen Klopp praised his team’s performance, noting their ability to overcome a ‘tough challenge’ and come out on top. He highlighted the team’s mentality and spirit, commending their effort and determination on the pitch.

Overall, Liverpool’s impressive display in this match signals their strong form and title credentials. Fans can look forward to more exciting performances from the team as they continue their pursuit of success this season.

  • Bronny struggles in extended Lakers run; ‘put him in a tough spot,’ says Redick

PHILADELPHIA — Lakers coach JJ Redick second-guessed his decision to insert rookie Bronny James into his rotation in Los Angeles’ 118-104 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday.

“Maybe put him in a tough spot,” Redick said after James went 0-for-5 with three turnovers in 15 minutes. “Flying up yesterday, nationally televised game in Philly and all that stuff. He didn’t play well, but he’s been playing great in the stay-ready games, and he’s been playing great in the G [League].”

James was on assignment with the South Bay Lakers, L.A.’s G League affiliate, when the Lakers recalled him Monday to join them in the middle of their five-game road trip.

The Lakers’ No. 55 pick in the second round in June, the eldest son of star LeBron James, had not played meaningful minutes for L.A. since opening night when the James family became the first father-son duo in NBA history to play in a game together.

With backup Gabe Vincent (left knee) sidelined the past two games, Redick gave Bronny a shot in the first quarter against Philadelphia with L.A. up 17-9.

“Just felt like on a back-to-back, just him giving us energy, I think, was the goal,” Redick said. “I have confidence in him, but obviously didn’t provide that at a high level.”

The 6-foot-2 guard struggled immediately, with the Sixers’ Tyrese Maxey (43 points) attacking him defensively to score and then turning it over on a bad pass to Anthony Davis on offense, leading to a transition dunk for Guerschon Yabusele.

“He’s a fast guard,” Bronny said of Maxey. “Amazing touch. Can shoot it. I was trying to stand my ground. Just trying to play as hard as I can and bring as much energy as I can. That’s all.”

He added that the call-up to the Lakers, a few days after scoring a season-high 31 points in the G League, caught him off guard.

“It just came out of nowhere, so I was always trying to stay ready to play and always keeping my mind right,” he said.

Despite the rough night, Bronny still cited growth since opening night when he closed out the second quarter against the Minnesota Timberwolves with his dad.

“I feel like I’m a whole lot more prepared now,” he said. “Again, just coming out and staying ready after the G League stint and the season being down the road a little bit more, just staying ready. And coming in, playing smart.”

LeBron said his son’s growth will continue with more opportunities.

“Obviously, it’s his first extensive minutes with us,” LeBron said. “We had that first game where it was just a moment — and that was a great moment. But tonight was his first opportunity to be with the big guys, be with the big club, and he’s going to continue to use that and get better and better.”

Bronny James, the son of NBA legend LeBron James, has been facing challenges during his extended run with the Los Angeles Lakers. Veteran guard JJ Redick recently commented on Bronny’s struggles, saying that the young player has been put in a tough spot due to the high expectations and scrutiny that come with being part of a famous basketball family.

Bronny, who is currently a member of the Lakers’ G League affiliate team, has been working hard to make a name for himself in the basketball world. However, with the added pressure of being LeBron James’ son, the 17-year-old has been facing criticism and comparisons to his father.

Redick, who has been following Bronny’s journey closely, expressed empathy for the young player and acknowledged the challenges he faces. “It’s not easy being in Bronny’s shoes. The spotlight is always on him, and people are quick to judge his every move. He’s a talented player with a bright future, but he’s still learning and growing,” Redick said.

Despite the difficulties, Bronny remains determined to prove himself and carve out his own path in the basketball world. With the support of his family, teammates, and fans, he continues to work hard and improve his game.

As Bronny navigates the ups and downs of his basketball career, it is clear that he has the potential to make a name for himself beyond just being LeBron James’ son. With time and experience, he will undoubtedly overcome these challenges and emerge as a successful player in his own right.

  • Opinion | Trump’s tough trade tactics risk turning the world away from America

US President Donald Trump’s first term changed the conversation on trade in the United States. Where the consensus had once been that open markets would eventually lead to even adversarial states like China and Russia adopting values like America’s, Trump’s first-term tariffs led to a recognition of their uses, and a deeper understanding of how adversarial states game the free-trade system.

Just as one can be too trusting with those who might betray them, liberal defenders of the free-trade system have too often displayed an idealism that its opponents could take advantage of.

Yet, just as one can be too trusting and idealistic, one can also be too calculating. If the former are too easily taken advantage of, the latter are telling the world their promises are of no value and will soon run out of partners.

Though Trump has been in office less than two weeks, his tariff threats have tipped past the point of pragmatism into irrationality. He has threatened 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico. He has threatened 10 per cent tariffs on China and levies on the European Union. He has even threatened tariffs (and sanctions) on Russia if it does not negotiate an end to its Ukraine invasion.

    02:31

US President Donald Trump softens tone on possible China tariffs

US President Donald Trump softens tone on possible China tariffs

And, most recently, he threatened tariffs on Colombia if it did not take back planes full of immigrants originating from the South American country. Though the tariffs were scrapped once the Colombian government (allegedly) relented to US demands, the president of Colombia initially responded with an interesting (if long-winded and tangential) social media post.

In recent months, President Donald Trump has taken a hardline approach to trade negotiations with countries around the world. From imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to threatening to withdraw from trade agreements like NAFTA, Trump’s tough tactics have sparked mixed reactions both domestically and internationally.

While some argue that Trump’s approach is necessary to protect American industries and jobs, others fear that his aggressive stance could alienate key allies and damage America’s reputation on the global stage. The risk of a trade war looms large, with countries like China retaliating with their own tariffs on American goods.

Critics warn that Trump’s “America First” rhetoric could ultimately isolate the United States and hinder its ability to negotiate favorable trade deals in the future. By alienating key allies and taking a confrontational stance, Trump risks turning the world away from America and undermining the country’s standing as a global leader.

It is crucial for Trump to consider the long-term implications of his trade policies and work towards finding mutually beneficial solutions with other countries. Cooperation, rather than confrontation, is key to fostering strong relationships and promoting economic growth on a global scale.

In conclusion, Trump’s tough trade tactics may have short-term benefits for certain industries, but they also carry significant risks for America’s standing in the world. Finding a balance between protecting American interests and maintaining positive relationships with key trading partners is essential for the country’s economic future.

  • Tough stretch for Atlanta Hawks gets even tougher with Jalen Johnson’s injury

Johnson missed six games, five consecutive, this season with a right shoulder injury. He returned to the team’s lineup in their matchup against the Celtics on Saturday and played the past three games.

The Hawks have not provided an update on Johnson’s injury, as of noon Friday. But should Johnson miss significant time, it would mark a serious blow to a Hawks frontcourt already rattled with injuries.

Hawks forward/center Larry Nance Jr. is undergoing rehab following surgery Jan. 2 to repair a fracture in his hand. Hawks rookie Zaccharie Risacher has missed several games with a left adductor strain. The Hawks sat center Clint Capela in Thursday’s game after a hard fall in Wednesday’s game left him with right knee soreness.

Johnson’s absence would leave the Hawks, who are 18-18 with Johnson in the rotation, without one of their more versatile players and second-top scorer amid the team’s offensive slump this month. The Hawks have averaged a season-low 113.6 points per game in the 11 games played in January.

Their efficiency also has taken a hit, despite them averaging a season-high field goal attempts this month.

Johnson had been the Hawks’ most efficient scorer on 10 or more field-goal attempts per game. Plus, he accounted for a significant portion of the Hawks’ playmaking this season with his speed and ability to get them out in transition quickly off opponents’ misses.

Through 36 games, Johnson averaged 18.9 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, 1.6 steals and one block per game.

In the 10 games leading to the All-Star break, six of them come against teams with records above .500. Several of those teams pose a huge threat to the decimated Hawks frontcourt because of the size up and down their lineups.

The Hawks’ next 10 opponents include the Timberwolves (14th), Rockets (fourth), Cavaliers (first), Pacers (11th), Pistons (13th), Spurs (21st), Bucks (eighth), Wizards (30th) Magic (17th) and Knicks (6th).

“We need, with Jalen getting hurt, who knows how long he’ll be out,” Hawks guard Trae Young said Thursday. “So, we’re going to need other guys to step up and try to fill what Jalen brings to our team as much as possible.”

The Atlanta Hawks have hit a rough patch in their season, and it just got a whole lot tougher with the news of Jalen Johnson’s injury. Johnson, the promising rookie forward, has been a key contributor for the Hawks this season, averaging 6.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

With the Hawks currently sitting at 12th place in the Eastern Conference, every game is crucial as they fight to climb up the standings and secure a playoff spot. Johnson’s injury will undoubtedly be a significant blow to the team, as they will now have to find a way to fill his void on both ends of the court.

The Hawks will need other players to step up in Johnson’s absence and help pick up the slack. It will be a tough stretch for Atlanta, but they will have to find a way to overcome this adversity and continue to compete at a high level.

We wish Jalen Johnson a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon. In the meantime, the Hawks will have to band together and find a way to weather this tough stretch without one of their key players.
