  • NCAA men’s hockey tournament bubble; how to watch Beanpot final

While the biggest prize in college hockey clearly is the national championship trophy, in one corner of the sport’s landscape, that accolade has a rival: the Beanpot.

The 72nd tournament, which features Boston College, Boston University, Northeastern and Harvard, concludes Monday at TD Garden with BC facing BU in the championship game (7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+).

Both teams are ranked in the top 10 in the country (BC is No. 1, BU is No. 8 in the most recent polls), but even in years when the Beanpot doesn’t have national implications of that magnitude, the energy, desire and hatred boil over for the schools and their fans.

This year’s final has a different twist, however. Nine of the players — six from BC, three from BU — were teammates at the IIHF World Junior Championship, where they won the gold medal for Team USA in January. At least one member of the Eagles or Terriers scored or assisted on all but one of the 37 goals the U.S. scored in the tournament.

Any friendships will be on hold Monday night.

“It’s just understanding that you can’t have any friends out there,” BC freshman James Hagens told the Boston Globe last month. “You might play with them for a while. They might be your best buddies, but you just have to understand it’s a hockey game, and you have to go out there and win.”

BU’s Cole Eiserman expressed similar sentiments. “You battle with those guys, get close to those guys, but I think we’re all competitive guys,” he told the Globe. “We want to win for our own school.”

The teams met in a home-and-home series in January, with BC sweeping by scores of 6-2 and 2-0. But BU will gladly accept those results in exchange for a trophy-lifting win Monday night. The Terriers last won the Beanpot in 2022, while BC’s most recent championship was in 2016. Northeastern has won five of the last six tournaments.

While Monday’s game will not count in the Hockey East standings, conference races are heating up around the country as the selection of the NCAA tournament field nears.

The NCAA field includes the winners of the six conference tournaments — Atlantic, Big Ten, CCHA, ECAC, Hockey East and NCHC — and 10 at-large teams based on the PairWise rankings.

Conference tournament championship games are scheduled for March 22, with the NCAA tournament selections to be announced March 23. Regionals will be held March 27-30, with the Frozen Four on April 10 and 12 in St. Louis. Every NCAA tournament game, including the selection show, will be on ESPN networks and streamed on ESPN+.

Here’s a look at where the NCAA field stands, with teams listed in order of the PairWise rankings as of Feb. 9.

In the field — for now

UMass-Lowell has slipped a few notches with three losses in four games, while Michigan and Arizona State improved their standing this past weekend with splits against Michigan State and Denver, respectively.

    No. 11 UMass-Lowell

Key games: Feb. 21-22 vs. Western Michigan; Feb. 28-March 1 at Omaha

    One-bid league champs

It’s looking more and more likely we’ll have three one-bid leagues — the ECAC, CCHA and Atlantic. Quinnipiac and Minnesota State are on the fringes of the at-large bubble, but if they fail to win their conference tournaments, the losses along the way seem likely to dash their at-large hopes.

Quinnipiac leads a tight ECAC race, with the top five teams within five points of each other, while Minnesota State has a solid hold on first place in the CCHA. So we’re penciling the Bobcats and Mavericks in the NCAA field for now.

In the Atlantic, Sacred Heart, Holy Cross and Bentley are within one point of each other in the league standings — although Holy Cross and Bentley have played two fewer games than Sacred Heart — and are bunched together in the PairWise. We gave the nod to the Crusaders, who are one spot ahead of Bentley in the PairWise, but as with the other three leagues in this group, it will all come down to the conference tournament.

    Quinnipiac

Record: 17-9-2, 11-4-1 ECAC (No. 15 in PairWise)

Last week’s results: Beat St. Lawrence 6-1; lost to Clarkson 3-2 (OT)

Key games: Feb. 14 at Union; Feb. 28 at Clarkson

    Minnesota State

Record: 20-8-2, 15-5-2 CCHA (No. 17 in PairWise)

Last week’s results: Beat Augustana 4-1 and 2-1

Key games: Feb. 21-22 at Lake Superior State

    Holy Cross

Record: 17-11-2, 16-4-2 Atlantic (No. 30 in PairWise)

Last week’s results: Won at RIT 9-2 and 3-0

Key games: Feb. 20 vs. Bentley; Feb. 24 vs. AIC

    On the bubble

Assuming there will be three conference champions outside of the top 16 in PairWise, teams below No. 13 will be out of luck in terms of grabbing an at-large NCAA bid. But the standings in this range are very tight, with positions changing with almost every result. These teams will have opportunities for key wins to gain critical PairWise capital, but the margin for error is slim.

    No. 14 UMass

    Record: 15-11-2, 6-8-2 Hockey East

Last week’s results: Won at UConn 5-4

    Key games: Feb. 14-15 home-and-home vs. BC; Feb. 27-March 1 home-and-home vs. UMass-Lowell

    No. 16 Penn State

    Record: 14-11-3, 5-10-3 Big Ten

Last week’s results: Won at Wisconsin 2-0 and 6-2

Key games: Feb. 21-22 at Michigan State; Feb. 28-March 1 vs. Minnesota

    No. 18 New Hampshire

    Record: 11-12-3, 3-11-2 Hockey East

Last week’s results: Lost to BC 4-2; lost to Merrimack 5-4

Key games: Feb. 14-15 at Maine; Feb. 28-March 1 home-and-home vs. BC

  • Seven Players To Watch In Talent-Loaded Beanpot Tournament

Some of the best talent college hockey has to offer will take center stage during the Dunkin’ Beanpot at TD Garden.

It feels like Boston College is bursting at the seams with NHL prospects while Boston University, Northeastern and Harvard have their share of top-tier difference-makers ready to make an impact on the tournament.

The high-end skill sets will be on display starting Monday night when BU takes on Harvard in the first semifinal at 5 p.m. ET followed by BC squaring off in the night cap against Northeastern, which is scheduled for 8 p.m. Both games can be seen on NESN.

Here are seven players to have an eye on in the Beanpot:

    Gabe Perreault, Boston College
Perreault certainly won’t hear cheers much longer at TD Garden since he’s a 2023 first-round pick (No. 23 overall) of the New York Rangers. But Perreault gives Eagles fans something to cheer about all the time with his dynamic ability. The sophomore forward leads the No. 1-ranked team in the country with 32 points from nine goals and 23 assists. Perreault’s assist total ranks second in the nation.

    Story continues below advertisement

    Quinn Hutson, Boston University
Hutson is just the latest from his family to star for the Terriers — his brother, Lane, had a ton of success with BU, which has now carried over with the Montreal Canadiens. The junior forward is as well-balanced as they come, logging 15 goals and 15 assists on the season. It’s the third straight season Hutson has tallied at least 15 goals and he’s on pace this season to set new career highs.

    Ryan Leonard, Boston College
Leonard has lived up to the billing of being the No. 8 overall pick by the Washington Capitals in the 2023 NHL Draft since stepping foot onto the Chestnut Hill campus. That’s not an easy feat. The sophomore forward enters the tournament as the top goal-scorer in the nation with 22 tallies and he also has eight assists for 30 points. The Amherst, Mass., native definitely has the look of a player who will make a name for himself in the NHL.

    Jack Williams, Northeastern
Williams will have a big say in Northeastern trying to capture a Beanpot three-peat. He leads the Huskies with 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points. The junior forward also has three game-winning goals under his belt this season and showed his ability to come up clutch during last year’s Beanpot when he netted the game-tying goal in the championship game against BU.

    James Hagens, Boston College
Macklin Celebrini starred for BU last season and performed well on the Beanpot stage before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the NHL draft. Hagens is looking to do the same. The highly touted NHL prospect is having a solid freshman season with the Eagles. He’s done more setting up than scoring with 21 assists compared to six goals, but he’s an adept playmaker even though he just turned 18 years old three months ago.

    Story continues below advertisement

    Joe Miller, Harvard
The 2020 Toronto Maple Leafs sixth-round draft pick will look to leave an imprint on the Beanpot. The junior forward leads the Crimson with 15 points off four goals and 11 assists. If Harvard can make some noise in the tournament, Miller likely will be at the center of it.

    Jacob Fowler, Boston College
Fowler is the favorite to win the Eberly Award, which is given to the top goalie of the tournament. The sophomore netminder has been rock-solid in net all season, boasting a spectacular 1.63 goals-against average an .938 save percentage en route to a 17-3-1 record with six shutouts. Two more good games from Fowler and he could walk away with some hardware.

Honorable Mention: Teddy Stiga (BC), Cole Eiserman (BU), Cam Lund (Northeastern), Drew Fortescue (BC).

NESN Dunkin’ Beanpot coverage is presented by Dunkin’.

The Beanpot Tournament is one of the most prestigious college hockey tournaments in the country, featuring teams from Boston University, Boston College, Harvard, and Northeastern University. With so much talent on the ice, there are several players to keep an eye on during this year’s tournament. Here are seven players to watch:

    1. Spencer Knight (Boston College) – The highly touted goaltender is a top NHL prospect and has been instrumental in Boston College’s success this season.

    2. Trevor Zegras (Boston University) – The skilled forward and Anaheim Ducks prospect is a dynamic playmaker who can change the game in an instant.

    3. Matt Boldy (Boston College) – Another top NHL prospect, Boldy is a scoring machine and a key player for Boston College.

    4. Devin Levi (Northeastern University) – The goaltender has been stellar for Northeastern this season and will be a key player in the tournament.

    5. Jack DeBoer (Harvard) – The freshman forward has been a standout for Harvard this season and will be a player to watch in the tournament.

    6. Jay O’Brien (Boston University) – The forward has been on a tear this season and will look to continue his hot streak in the tournament.

    7. Dylan Jackson (Northeastern University) – The defenseman has been a key player for Northeastern this season and will look to make an impact in the tournament.

  • Cougars face a challenge with tournament implications

BYU basketball is on a hot streak. Doesn’t that feel nice to read? Finally, after a shaky opening to the season, the Cougars led by rookie Head Coach Kevin Young are beginning to click, and that point was exemplified flawlessly as they took down a hungry and talented Baylor squad on Tuesday night.

The overtime thriller was adrenaline-pumping for several reasons, not the least of which was Kanon Catchings’ career-high 23-point performance that saw the freshman wing sink every shot attempt that left his fingertips. Kanon really put on a full display of his talents in front of his aunt, Tamika, NBA scouts, and even… Conor McGregor?

    Conor McGregor, Kalani Sitake

Conor is a certified Coug. | Chris Gardner/GettyImages

Yeah, that wasn’t a typo. Conor McGregor is an official Cougar fan. I bet you didn’t have that on your preseason predictions list.

But now the challenge continues to incline for this BYU basketball bunch as they take their squad to Orlando in a battle with the UCF Knights. The Cougars won in both of their meetings with Central Florida last season, but that doesn’t guarantee a win this year.

There are no easy wins in the Big 12 Conference.

    Unless you’re Houston, I guess.

That traumatic memory aside, let’s stop dwelling on the past and focus on the task at hand: taking down UCF on the road and advancing up the Big 12 standings.

The Cougars are favored to win this matchup after 3 straight victories, but road struggles have defined the early season for these Cougars, losing to both TCU and Utah in an unfamiliar environment. Claiming a win in this meeting with 13-7 UCF would solidify BYU’s status in the conference, and keep the positive vibes flowing.

You’d be a fool to skip out on this one.

    More BYU Cougars News:

The Cougars basketball team is facing a tough challenge with tournament implications on the line. With only a few games left in the regular season, every win is crucial for their chances of making it to the postseason.

The team has been playing well recently, but they know that they will need to step up their game even more in order to secure a spot in the tournament. They have been working hard in practice, focusing on their defensive strategies and offensive execution.

Their next game is against a tough opponent who is also fighting for a spot in the tournament. The pressure is on for the Cougars to come out strong and play with intensity from the opening tip-off.

The players know that they have the talent and skills to compete at a high level, but they will need to bring their A-game in order to come out on top. The coaching staff has been emphasizing the importance of staying focused and playing as a cohesive unit.

As the game approaches, the Cougars are feeling a mix of nerves and excitement. They know that this game could make or break their season, and they are determined to give it their all on the court.

The 26-year-old Florida native, who is ranked the no. 1 female golfer in the world, has just kicked off her 2025 season on the LPGA Tour and as imagined, all eyes are on her. After a triumphant, record-breaking 2024, which saw the SI Swimsuit model win a whopping seven LPGA Tours along with the LPGA Player of the Year title and the Rolex Annika Major Award, the pressure is on for this trailblazer to give another incredible year. But, if anyone can thrive under the circumstances, it’s Korda.

From the Lake Nona Golf Course in Orlando, Fla., Korda is currently competing in the first LPGA event of the year, the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions. As she moves up on the leaderboard, playing against impressive global golfers such as Kim A-lim, Lydia Ko and Rio Takeda, to name a few, we’re also keeping a close eye on her ‘fits on the green to pull inspo from.

We’re always impressed with how fashionable Korda makes her activewear look, including her black pleated mini skirt moment and her look from round 1 of the tournament, consisting of a bright seafoam V-neck green Nike polo and white mini skirt. Accessorizing with her white Goldman Sachs visor and white scrunchie around her high bun, Korda also rocked a series of delicate gold necklaces as well as white Nike sneakers.

Round two turned out better than the first for Korda, who shot a 67 and rose up on the leaderboard.

  • ‘Jeopardy!’ Star Neilesh Vinjamuri in ‘Tournament of Champions’ Impresses Fans

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for the January 29 episode of Jeopardy!]

Jeopardy!‘s Tournament of Champions is already off to a hot start and has perhaps found its early front-runner in Neilesh Vinjamuri, who dominated the competition in Wednesday’s (January 29) game.

As previously reported, Vinjamuri, a three-game champion from Lionville, Pennsylvania, went up against Weckiai Rannila, a three-game champion from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Greg Jolin, a five-game champion from Raymond, New Hampshire, in Game 3 of the ToC.

Vinjamuri went into beast mode on the buzzer, answering a staggering 33 clues correctly (and only one incorrect) across the episode, securing his spot in the semifinals. In doing so, he earned himself a whole host of new fans, with many taking to social media to praise his impressive performance.

“Absolutely dominating performance. I remember Neilesh being very sharp but I don’t think anyone beats him if his next games are like this one,” wrote one user on the Jeopardy! Reddit forum.

“Neilesh was an absolute buzz-saw in this game, against good opponents. I see him going far,” said another.

“Dang, Neilesh is a beast,” another added.

One fan wrote, “Neilesh was a dang firecracker. Wicked fast, huge knowledge. If he plays like that every game, he’s a strong pick to take this thing down.”

“Neilesh was such a an absolute BEAST tonight. He was so fast, smart, and stoic,” added another.

“What an impressive game. What more could I say? Also having a lock game was not on my bingo card,” said one commenter.

“Neilesh absolutely crushed it today and I’d be super scared if I was facing him in the semifinals. That’s an insanely dominating performance against some very strong competition,” wrote another.

“Can’t believe this dude only won 3 games originally good lord,” added one viewer.

Others wondered if Vinjamuri had broken the record for most correct answers in a single game. Unfortunately for Vinjamuri, he can’t claim that record just yet, as Jeopardy! legends James Holzhauer and Ken Jennings currently hold the record with 44 correct answers in a single game.

Jennings first set the record with 44 correct responses in a game on July 23, 2004, where he also set a new single-day cash winnings record of $75,000. Holzhauer then equaled that score in a game on April 30, 2019, then matched the record again on May 3, 2019. The only other contestant to come close is super-champ Matt Amodio, who answered 43 clues correctly on July 29, 2021.

There is still a lot of tournament left to play, though, so there is always a chance for Vinjamuri or another player to break the record.

  • Indiana Fever Star to Compete in Unrivaled’s 1 on 1 Tournament

The brand new Unrivaled 3v3 league is just two weeks old, but they already have an exciting event that is just around the corner–a one-on-one tournament, where the winner will receive a slice of the $350,000 prize pool. According to Unrivaled’s website, Indiana Fever star Lexie Hull will be one of the 30 participants.

Competing along with Hull will be four of her teammates on Rose Basketball Club, Chelsea Gray, Kahleah Copper, Brittney Sykes, and Azurá Stevens, though Angel Reese is not among those listed.

The way the payouts will work is that the winner will receive $200,000, while each clubmate of the winner will receive $10,000. The runner-up will get $50,000, and the semi-finalists that do not advance will get $25,000 each.

Each of the participants has been split into one of four pods, and fan voting will determine the seeding for the tournament. Each round will be single elimination, until the finals, which will be a best-of-three series.

The tournament itself is set to begin on February 10, and games will be played to either 11 points or for ten minutes, whichever outcome occurs first.

The shot clock will only last for seven seconds, and will follow “winners” rules, where if a player makes a basket, they get to inbound the next possession. The scoring will also be the same as in a regular game, so two-point shots will count for two, and anything beyond the arc will add three points to the score.

For a player like Hull that can get hot from deep in a hurry and be a solid defensive presence, she could end up having a slight advantage in this tournament.

As for her team, they sit at 1-3 after the first two weeks of play, losing their most recent game to the undefeated Laces club. Hull has been averaging just seven minutes per contest, the fewest minutes on the team, though she has performed well when she’s on the court on average, putting up 7.3 points per game.

Rose BC takes the court next on Friday, January 31 at 4:15 (PT) against Phantom Basketball Club, led by Satou Sabally, Britney Griner, Sabrina Ionescu, and Hull’s teammate on the Fever, Katie Lou Samuelson. Phantom BC is also currently 1-3 to begin the season and is the only team left in the league that Rose BC has yet to face.

  • Will Iowa qualify for this year’s Big Ten men’s basketball tournament?

The Gazette offers audio versions of articles using Instaread. Some words may be mispronounced.

Here’s the reality: At 4-6 at the halfway point of the Big Ten regular-season, the Iowa men’s basketball team has some winning to proceed to the league’s tournament in Indianapolis March 12-16.

With the addition of four new members, an 18-team tourney apparently was too unwieldy for the conference. Not that a 15-team event isn’t, but that’s the number the league chose. It’s like relegation in European soccer leagues, except the bottom three teams won’t be replaced at the end of the season.

After its 82-65 loss at Ohio State on Monday, Iowa was in 12th-place in the Big Ten at 4-6. That’s not very far from 16th.

Minnesota, Northwestern and Rutgers are 3-6. The bottom three entering Tuesday night’s play are 3-7 Penn State, 2-7 Nebraska and 1-8 Washington.

Iowa is 4-1 at home in the Big Ten, 0-5 on the road. It won two of its home games by one point and another in overtime. On the road, it has lost by an average of 16.8 points per game, and lost its last four by 20.5 points.

Five of the Hawkeyes’ remaining 10 games are against the conference’s five ranked teams. Purdue, Wisconsin, Oregon and Michigan State all come to Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes can put some distance between themselves and Rutgers, Northwestern and Nebraska with wins at those schools. The other two road games are against rising Maryland and No. 18 Illinois.

Two glaring statistics suggest Iowa will need improvement just to go 4-6 in the second half of the Big Ten schedule.

In conference games, the Hawkeyes are last in field goal percentage defense (52.0 percent). By contrast, Michigan State has held league foes to 38.8 percent shooting. Wisconsin is at 41.8 percent, Purdue and Illinois at 42.9.

Iowa also is last in rebounding margin at minus-8.5 per game. That’s 3.5 per game worse than anyone else.

The stats aren’t all bad. The Hawkeyes are second in the league behind Purdue in an important department, turnover margin. They’re fifth in field goal shooting (47.8 percent).

By the way, finishing 15th is no bargain. Nor is ending 10th through 14th. The 10th through 15th teams will play on Wednesday at the league tourney, and would have to win five games in five days to capture the championship. The 5-9 seeds begin play Thursday, and the top four seeds start on Friday.

Iowa’s next game is at home next Tuesday against Purdue.

As the regular season winds down and teams jockey for position in the Big Ten men's basketball standings, one burning question remains: Will Iowa qualify for this year's Big Ten tournament? The Hawkeyes have had an up-and-down season so far, with impressive wins over top-ranked teams like Michigan State and Illinois, but also suffering some disappointing losses along the way. Currently sitting in the middle of the pack in the conference standings, Iowa will need to finish strong in their remaining games to secure a spot in the tournament. With talented players like Luka Garza leading the way, Iowa certainly has the potential to make a deep run in the tournament. However, they will need to focus and continue to play at a high level to ensure their spot in the postseason. So, Hawkeyes fans, what do you think? Will Iowa qualify for this year's Big Ten men's basketball tournament, and if so, how far do you think they can go? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
