DOVER, Del. (AP) — Sarah McBride made history in Delaware as the first openly transgender state senator in the United States. Now she’s making history again, recently elected as the first openly trans member of Congress.
Her political promotion has come during a reckoning for transgender rights when legislation in Republican-governed states around the country aims to curb their advance. During an election where a deluge of campaign ads and politicians demeaned trans people, McBride still easily won her blue state’s only seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
But even before she is sworn in, her reception from congressional Republicans has been tumultuous. Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina targeted her by proposing to ban transgender people from U.S. Capitol restrooms that correspond to their gender identity — a ban that House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., enacted.
McBride tried to defuse the situation, saying she would follow the rules. “I’m not here to fight about bathrooms,” the 34-year-old wrote in a statement.

Early promise and a meteoric rise
Growing up in Wilmington, Delaware, McBride was the type of child who practiced Democratic political speeches in her bedroom at a makeshift podium. By high school, she had worked on multiple campaigns, including that of Beau Biden, the president’s late son and former Delaware attorney general.
Though she seemed destined to work in politics, McBride once felt revealing her gender identity would derail those ambitions. She was 21 and the president of American University’s student government when she came out as transgender, first to her friends and family and later in a public post that went viral.
Says McBride, “Coming out was without question the hardest thing that I had ever done up until that point. And yet it was still relatively easy compared to the experiences of so many people.”
A supportive family and pastor
Her parents have been her biggest supporters, but they worried for her. One of their first calls after McBride came out was to their pastor, the Rev. Gregory Knox Jones of Westminster Presbyterian, a progressive church where Sarah was a youth elder and Jill Biden is a member.
“We talked about the fact that this was your child. You love your child,” Jones recalled. “You can’t think of losing a son. You’ve gained a daughter.”
David McBride, Sarah’s father, said that kind of support has made all the difference for their family. “Our life and Sarah’s life have been made by the response that we and she got first from our friends, our church, our community.”
A rapid series of firsts
McBride would go on to forge a trail through a rapid series of firsts. During college, she became the first openly transgender woman to intern at the White House. At a reception there, she met and later fell in love with a young lawyer, Andrew Cray, a trans man and LGBTQ+ health policy advocate.
As an activist at 22, McBride was instrumental in helping pass a transgender nondiscrimination law in Delaware. She worked as the spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, a leading LGBTQ-rights group. In 2016, she became the first openly trans person to speak at the Democratic National Convention.
In the legislature, a hard worker — fueled by coffee
As a state legislator, McBride was known for her hard work. She rarely stops to eat on busy days, instead subsisting on a steady diet of coffee, heavy on the cream and sweetener.
Nowhere is her boundless energy more evident than when she talks about the minutiae of policymaking. She likes kitchen table issues: health care, paid family leave, childcare and affordable housing. In the state Senate, she chaired the health committee and helped expand access to Medicaid and dental care for underserved communities. Most of her bills got bipartisan support.
Her signature accomplishment was helping pass paid family and medical leave in Delaware. It was personal for McBride.
Her partner, Cray, was 27 when he was diagnosed with oral cancer. Within a year, the prognosis was terminal. They moved up their wedding plans, asking the Rev. Gene Robinson, a friend and the first openly gay Episcopal bishop, to officiate.
They married on the rooftop of their apartment building in August 2014. Cray died four days later at the hospital.
Aspiring to a politics of grace
In her 2018 memoir, McBride wrote a chapter titled “Amazing grace,” about “beautiful acts of kindness” she witnessed during the last weeks of Cray’s life.
“A lot of times when people go through loss, it can be either faith-crushing or faith-affirming. And for me, it was faith-affirming,” she said.
In the decade since, she often asks herself, “What would Andy do?” And she seeks to follow his example of compassion and “principled grace” toward anti-LGBTQ politicians. “His kindness, his decency has provided for me a North Star.”
Some activists criticized McBride for not fighting back more forcefully against the Capitol bathroom ban. She agrees it’s important for trans people to access public facilities, but says she will respond with grace.
“At the end of the day, our ability to have a pluralistic, diverse democracy requires some foundation of kindness and grace,” McBride said. “And I believe in that so strongly that even when it’s difficult, I will seek to summon it.”

Trans rights to be marquee fight for House Republicans
Republicans’ first response to Sarah McBride’s election to Congress was to ban her from using women’s restrooms throughout the Capitol. But their early treatment of the first openly transgender House member is likely just a preview of how they’ll navigate transgender politics and policies for the next two years.
Believing voters in the 2024 elections rejected Democrats’ more inclusive positions on transgender rights, Republicans appear ready in 2025 to double down in support of executive orders and provisions in spending bills that would make it harder for transgender individuals to get health care, serve in the military or participate in school activities. President-elect Donald Trump signaled on the campaign trail that he would pursue new restrictions in the military and in schools, and pledged in December to make U.S. policy reflect that there are only “two genders.”
Rep. Nancy Mace, the South Carolina Republican who led the push to bar McBride from using women’s restrooms in the Capitol, is showing no sign of letting up. Asked how she would press transgender issues legislatively in the next Congress, she said: “You should look at the bills that I have been filing. That’ll be educational for you.” Mace has offered bills that would restrict bathroom usage for transgender people in places receiving federal funds and impose penalties on doctors performing gender-affirming care.
“There’s always things you can do through the appropriations process,” said House Appropriations Chair Tom Cole (R-Okla.), adding that there’s public support for “common sense” guardrails related to policy areas like transgender participation in competitive sports. Polling from Gallup in 2023 found 69 percent of people believe athletes should only play on sports teams that conform with their birth gender.
The push on transgender rights is poised to be one of the marquee health policy and culture war battles that the House GOP takes on next year, with Republican lawmakers showing no sign of softening. Though some Democrats are questioning the party’s stance when it comes to transgender women participating in competitive sports, many are gearing up to fight back.
Democratic lawmakers generally support the rights of transgender people to use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender identity, though they’ve largely been responding to GOP-led attacks on that community rather than working to broadly expand protections. President Joe Biden’s administration has taken steps to safeguard protections for the community, such as strengthening protections for youth transgender people health care in June.
“I know that I’m willing to take my gloves off and go after anyone who tries to attack her [and other transgender peoples’] dignity, because it’s so enraging, just on a basic level of human dignity,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said of McBride.
The GOP-led House voted earlier this term to prevent members of the military from receiving gender affirming medical care and to ban transgender women from playing in women’s sports. Last month, Republicans insisted on a provision in the annual defense policy bill aimed at restricting medical treatments for transgender children.
Looking ahead, many health experts — particularly those who are concerned about the mental health implications of withholding gender-affirming care — are fearful of Republican-led efforts to deny funding to hospitals that receive Medicaid and Medicare if physicians assist trans youth with transitions. A case is now pending before the right-leaning Supreme Court that could allow states to criminalize gender-affirming care for minors.
In Congress, the issue is also getting personal as Republicans look toward McBride joining the legislative body. In November, Speaker Mike Johnson announced plans to ban transgender women from using women’s bathrooms in the House: “A man cannot become a woman,” he said.
Interviews with more than a dozen House Republicans as the bathroom debate played out revealed that many GOP members are either uncomfortable talking about transgender issues or are openly hostile to them. Most Republicans interviewed also misgendered McBride.
“You’re a dude. You want to wear a dress, it’s a free country, but at the end of the day you’re still a dude in a dress,” said Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.), who added that he’d welcome grabbing a drink or coffee with her.
The new rules, which will restrict transgender people from using multi-stall restrooms for their preferred gender throughout the entire House side of the Capitol and in all House office buildings, showed how committed Republicans are to pursuing a rigid definition of gender in their own place of work.
In response, the Congressional Equality Caucus shared with congressional chiefs of staff a list of every single-stall restroom around the Capitol complex, showing there are no such restrooms in the Capitol building itself. And the GOP ban has implications beyond just lawmakers themselves.
“We’ve already heard from some members of the press who are trans, who are struggling with this [and I] have also heard people reaching out to me about their discomfort now visiting the Capitol because they identify as trans,” said House Equity Caucus Co-Chair Becca Balint (D-Vt.).
The move also hints at the possibility of similar restrictions in other federal office buildings and federally funded facilities. Mace has legislation that would expand the policy, along with a proposal to impose strict penalties for doctors who perform gender-affirming care for minors.
McBride herself has said she isn’t going to contest, or try to test, the new policy that Mace and others acknowledge was specifically crafted with her in mind, saying in a statement, “I’m not here to fight about bathrooms.”
Some Republicans may agree with her.
“To some people, this is the most important issue, I guess,” Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), chair of the Interior-Environment Appropriations Subcommittee, said of the bathroom debate when the ban was announced. “I kind of look at getting our budget heading in the right direction.”
He added of McBride specifically: “I’ll treat her like a colleague. She was elected by her constituents, so it’s the way it is.”

“When people say, ‘We can’t do what we used to do.’ Yeah! Slavery used to be legal, you guys. Sometimes we’ve got to move forward, and I’m sorry if it’s different, but wrap your little mind around it.”
In 2021, Chappelle got into hot water with the left for transgender jokes in his Netflix special, “The Closer.” Trans activists urged Netflix to drop the program and a small group of Netflix employees also staged a walkout in protest.
In 2023, he continued to make jokes about transgender people in his special “The Dreamer,” when he recounted visiting Jim Carrey on the set of his 1999 movie, “The Man on the Moon.”

Carrey employed a “method” approach to portraying real-life comedian Andy Kaufman by remaining in character at all times, and Chappelle was told by the crew to address Carrey as “Andy” when he met him.
“I wanted to meet Jim Carrey and I had to pretend this n—a was Andy Kaufman all afternoon. And he was clearly Jim Carrey. I could look at him and I could see he was Jim Carrey,” he remarked. “Anyway, I say all that to say that’s how trans people make me feel.”

The much-anticipated second season of Squid Game has dropped, and fans are seriously divided over trans character Hyun-Ji, played by cisgender male actor Park Sung-Hoon.

The beloved South Korean thriller, which returned after three years on Thursday (26 December), came back with a bang as fans saw Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-Jae, return to the deadly competition.
The new season features plenty of fresh faces bravely (or, perhaps, stupidly) competing for the cash prize, including Hyun-Ji (Park Sung-Hoon), a trans character who aims to win the games to pay for her gender-reassignment surgery.
The Squid Game season two teaser is finally here. (Netflix) The inclusion of the character has caused mixed reactions among LGBTQ+ fans, some of whom have commended the series for a “well-written” portrayal of a trans woman, while others have questioned whether a cis man is fit for the role.
“Squid Game 2 is surprisingly good but did they HAVE to cast a cis guy to play a (clockable) trans woman,” one user wrote.
“Could they not cast an actual transgender woman… This is gonna p**s me off,” another wrote.
Outside of the frustration that the role was given to a cisgender actor, others complained that the role itself seemed a bit lacking and could have been done better.
“The trans character in Squid Game gets so little to do lol,” one complainant wrote. “For the first four episodes she just kind of walks around quietly while other characters make jabs at her. It’s the kind of mealy-mouthed ‘representation’ that does nothing for anyone other than check off a box.”

However, others completely disagreed, arguing that Hyun-Ji is “surprisingly” well-written.
“It’s the way this show put an old woman, a pregnant woman, and a trans woman together and outright said they are all valid as women moved me to tears,” one user wrote. “Holy f***ing shit.”
Another person agreed, saying: “Watching the new season of Squid Game and I absolutely adore the trans character, the writers wrote her with so much love and care.”
Earlier in December, Squid Game director and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk defended the controversial decision to cast Park Sung-Hoon as a trans woman in season 2 of the hit Netflix show.

“I did anticipate such discussions to arise from the first moment I began creating the character,” he said. “In the beginning we were doing our research, and I was thinking of doing an authentic casting of a trans actor.
“When we researched in Korea, there are close to no actors [who] are openly trans, let alone openly gay, because unfortunately in Korean society the LGBTQ+ community is still marginalised and more neglected, which is heart-breaking.”
