  • Trump official travels to Venezuela in push for Maduro regime to take back Tren de Aragua gang members

President Donald Trump’s envoy for special missions, Richard Grenell, has traveled to Venezuela to deliver an in-person message to socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro about accepting violent criminals deported from the United States.

On a call with reporters Friday, Mauricio Claver-Carone, the U.S. special envoy to Latin America, said Grenell will tell Maduro to take back all the Venezuelan criminals and Tren de Aragua gang members that have been “exported to the United States, and to do so unequivocally and without condition.”

Grenell will also demand that Venezuela immediately release American hostages being held in that country, Claver-Carone said.

The trip “focuses on two very specific issues. That we expect that Venezuelan criminals and gangs will be returned, as they are, to every country in the world, without conditions, and two, that American hostages need to be released immediately, unequivocally,” he explained.

“This is not a quid pro quo. It’s not a negotiation in exchange for anything. President Trump himself has made that very clear.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Friday that Grenell had arrived in Venezuela on orders from the president.

Despite widespread belief among Venezuelans and much of the international community that Maduro lost the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election to opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, he was sworn into his third six-year term earlier this month.

The U.S. does not recognize Maduro as the legitimate head of state of Venezuela.

Opposition leader María Corina Machado has called on Venezuelan citizens to protest the Maduro regime and demand that González be installed as the rightful president of Venezuela.

As many as 10 Americans are currently detained in Venezuela, although the State Department has not declared them wrongfully detained. Three are U.S. citizens who allegedly participated in a plot to destabilize the country, according to Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello.

The State Department has denied any U.S. involvement with a plot to overthrow Maduro.

It remains unclear how many Americans are currently held in Venezuela following the significant prisoner swap in 2023 when Washington and Caracas negotiated the release of dozens of prisoners, including 10 Americans, in exchange for Colombian businessman Alex Saab, a close ally of Maduro.

Saab was arrested during the first Trump administration on charges related to a $350 million bribery scheme.

The Trump administration is ramping up pressure on the Maduro regime in Venezuela by sending a high-ranking official to the country to push for the extradition of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang members. The gang, known for its brutal tactics and involvement in drug trafficking, has long been a thorn in the side of Venezuelan authorities.

The official, who has not been named for security reasons, is expected to meet with top government officials in Caracas to discuss the extradition of the gang members to the United States. The Trump administration has accused the Maduro regime of harboring and protecting criminal organizations like the Tren de Aragua in exchange for their support.

The move is part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to increase pressure on the Maduro regime and crack down on criminal organizations operating in Venezuela. The Tren de Aragua is just one of many gangs causing chaos and violence in the country, and the Trump administration is determined to see them brought to justice.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Trump official makes their way to Venezuela and pushes for the Maduro regime to take back the Tren de Aragua gang members.

  • Tiger Basketball Team Travels To Tuscaloosa For Saturday Evening Tilt With Alabama – LSU

BATON ROUGE – The LSU Basketball team goes on the road Saturday to face No. 4/3 Alabama at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa.

The game will be the Tigers fourth in their first six Southeastern Conference contests.

LSU and Alabama will tip just after 7:30 p.m. with the Voice of the Tigers Chris Blair and former LSU head coach John Brady on the call on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (Guaranty Media flagship Eagle 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge) and on TV on the SEC Network with Dave Neal and Pat Bradley.

Alabama is ranked fourth in the latest AP media poll and third in the coaches’ poll with a record of 16-3 and 5-1 in the SEC, while LSU, coming off a midweek bye, is 12-6 and 1-4 in the league.

LSU enters the game off a 68-57 loss last Saturday at Texas A&M. It was a contest in which the Aggies were able to take control of in the second half thanks to a 10-0 run over some six minutes when LSU went cold from the field and surrendered turnovers that resulted in Texas A&M baskets.

Alabama scored over 100 points for the second straight game in its last game on Tuesday, downing Vanderbilt, 103-87. The Tide previously had beaten No. 8 Kentucky, 102-97 the previous Saturday at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

Cam Carter continues to lead the Tigers, averaging 17.6 points per game for the season and 19.4 points in SEC play. He is one of three in the SEC rankings, shooting over 40 percent from three-point range (46-of-113 (40.7%). He is seventh in the SEC in scoring average.

Jordan Sears has been coming off the bench the last couple of games. He is averaging 13.8 points and is 78 points shy of 2,000 for his career.

Alabama is led by Mark Sears who leads the Crimson Tide in points (19.0) and assists (4.9). The Crimson Tide has three other players in double figures with Grant Nelson at 12.6 (also 8.7 rebounds), Aden Holloway (11.4 points) and Labaron Philon (11.3).

With the road schedule for LSU, the schedule tilts back toward home for the Tigers as they will play three-of-the-next-four games at home, starting on Wednesday when the potential No. 1 team in Auburn will come to Baton Rouge and the Maravich Center.

On Feb. 1, for the Texas game, the 25th anniversary of the 2000 SEC Champions and NCAA Sweet 16 team will be honored as many of Coach John Brady’s Tigers will be in town for that event. It is also Alumni Basketball day and many players from several different eras will be on hand for the game.

Tickets for both games next week at home are available at LSUTix.net.

The LSU Tigers basketball team is heading to Tuscaloosa this Saturday for an exciting matchup with the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Tigers are coming off a tough loss to Arkansas and will be looking to bounce back with a big win on the road.

The game is set to tip off at 6:00 PM at the Coleman Coliseum. Both teams are currently in the top half of the SEC standings, making this game a crucial one for both teams as they jockey for position in the conference.

The Tigers will be led by their dynamic duo of Trendon Watford and Cameron Thomas, who have been lighting up the scoreboard all season long. The Crimson Tide, on the other hand, will be looking to their star guard Jaden Shackelford to lead them to victory.

It’s sure to be a thrilling game between two talented teams, so be sure to tune in and cheer on the Tigers as they look to come out on top in Tuscaloosa. Geaux Tigers! #LSUBasketball #SECMatchup #GeauxTigers

  • Trump Travels to North Carolina and Los Angeles Disaster Areas: Trump News and Updates

The initial plan for retooling the federal government under President Trump started with three loyal billionaires: the banker Howard Lutnick, the tech leader Elon Musk and the entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.

    Now, it’s down to one.

Mr. Lutnick emerged as Mr. Trump’s pick to run the Commerce Department. Mr. Ramaswamy decided to step aside from the project just before Mr. Trump assumed office on Monday.

As a result, Mr. Musk, the world’s richest man, now has full command of the federal cost-cutting effort, which Mr. Trump has hailed as “potentially, ‘The Manhattan Project’ of our time.” How exactly Mr. Musk wields his consolidated power to set the tempo and targets of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency remains to be seen. But his first moves suggest he will oversee something closer to an I.T. project than the sweeping operation to slash at least $2 trillion from the federal budget that Mr. Musk had once predicted.

The Musk-led project debuted this week with a bit of bureaucratic jujitsu: the takeover of an existing arm of the White House that, for the past decade, had focused on improving government technology. The office, the United States Digital Service, now renamed United States DOGE Service, was created in 2014 to fix failing computer systems that threatened the success of President Barack Obama’s health insurance overhaul.

Mr. Musk, who cut 80 percent of the jobs at Twitter after he bought the social media company two years ago, aims to conduct a review of at least some of the roughly 200 employees who work in the office before deciding whether to keep them in their jobs, according to two people familiar with his plan, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal plans.

From this new perch in the administration, Mr. Musk immediately gains a road map to the federal bureaucracy, which could allow him to swiftly assess the technological capacities of agencies and departments and identify potential changes. He is also expected to maintain an office in the West Wing, which will help him keep crucial access to Mr. Trump and key White House aides. Mr. Musk’s allies, meanwhile, have secured key posts in the administration. Amanda Scales, who until this month worked at Mr. Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, is now chief of staff at the Office of Personnel Management, a powerful agency that oversees government hiring.

Mr. Musk posted a meme last week on his social media platform, since renamed X, that hinted at grand ambitions for his new project, comparing his looming effect on government to his company’s innovation of rockets that fuel space travel.

“What matters going forward is to actually make significant changes, cement those changes and set the foundation for America to be strong for a century, for centuries, forever,” Mr. Musk said at a Trump rally in Washington on Sunday.

But the decision to rebrand the former digital office into DOGE also signals the potential limits of the endeavor, budget experts said.

Mr. Trump initially said his government overhaul would “cut wasteful expenditures” and “slash excess regulations,” but those goals were not explicitly laid out in the order on Monday that created the new group.

DOGE has been tasked with recommending cuts to the federal work force in the next 90 days and playing a key role in overhauling hiring practices within four months.

But the office does not have the power to approve spending cuts — that authority remains with Congress.

Romina Boccia, the director of budget and entitlement policy at the libertarian Cato Institute, said focusing on modernizing government technology could help address issues like improper payments. But she said that would be likely to save only a couple hundred billion dollars at most, far less than Mr. Musk had promised.

“The cynic in me says that DOGE realized that they were perhaps too ambitious and it would be much more difficult to accomplish their initial goals of reducing spending by $2 trillion,” Ms. Boccia said. “They’re narrowing their scope to something more manageable.”

A White House spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment. A spokeswoman for Mr. Musk declined to comment.

During last year’s presidential campaign, Mr. Musk said DOGE could cut the $6.75 trillion federal budget by at least $2 trillion, or about 30 percent. More recently, he has lowered his estimate to closer to $1 trillion. During the first Trump administration, spending jumped to nearly $8 trillion from about $5 trillion, an increase due in part to Covid-19 relief efforts. Heading into his second term, Mr. Trump has vowed to avoid cuts to Social Security and Medicare, which account for about a third of federal spending.

Still, some experts on the federal government said DOGE’s influence could be substantial because Mr. Musk and his allies will operate from within the federal government, rather than outside. Mr. Trump’s order called for “DOGE teams” to be embedded within federal agencies like the I.R.S., a change from Mr. Trump’s original plan to have the group based mostly outside the government to offer advice to White House budget officials. Most DOGE staff members will now be full-time government employees, according to a person familiar with the plans.

“It brings DOGE inside and connects it with every federal agency, in ways that could have sweeping impact,” said Donald F. Kettl, a former dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Policy.

Simplifying government systems could also be a tool that results in substantial benefits for taxpayers, said Mina Hsiang, the most recent administrator of the Digital Service, noting that better technology could help people to file taxes or gain access to veterans’ benefits.

“If they choose to work on the everyday problems that impact all Americans, they could accomplish a lot,” said Ms. Hsiang, who was appointed to the role during the Biden administration. “If they work on programs that put them in a deeply adversarial position with agencies, I think they will be less likely to get important things done.”

Mr. Trump initially said his government overhaul initiative would “cut wasteful expenditures” and “slash excess regulations,” but those goals were not explicitly laid out in the executive order that created DOGE.Credit…Kenny Holston/The New York Times

The full extent of how DOGE works and what it does may end up shielded from the public. Mr. Musk hopes to join the administration as a special government employee, according to a person familiar with his plan, a designation intended to avoid triggering a transparency law requiring government panels that include private citizens to conduct their meetings in public and make their documents available. It remains to be seen whether many other DOGE staffers will also have that designation.

An executive order Mr. Trump signed this week to institute a hiring freeze of federal civilian employees underscored how broad the group’s authority could be. DOGE will help work on a plan to reduce the size of the federal work force “through efficiency improvements and attrition,” according to the order.

Mr. Musk’s team is tightly integrated with the Office of Personnel Management, with some of his DOGE aides working out of the O.P.M. offices, according to a person with knowledge of the arrangement. Federal agencies have been asked to send Ms. Scales, the office’s new chief of staff, lists of all their workers who are on probationary status — and therefore easier to fire — by Friday.

Another Musk ally is also poised to join the administration: Michael Grimes of Morgan Stanley, a star Silicon Valley banker who helped Mr. Musk purchase Twitter, has told associates that he’s likely to come aboard in a temporary, fellowship-like role before returning to the bank, according to people briefed on the conversations. His interest was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

An early focus for DOGE appears to be the I.R.S., the sprawling agency with more than 80,000 employees that collected nearly $5 trillion in tax revenue last year.

People involved with DOGE, including the tech investor Baris Akis, participated in the transition team’s agency review at the I.R.S., with a focus on updating the tax collector’s technology systems, according to three people familiar with the work. Mr. Musk has criticized the agency on X as having outdated information technology.

A goal of the new administration is to reduce the number of I.R.S. employees by automating more work, the people said. An executive order from Mr. Trump this week temporarily freezing hiring across the federal government also empowered DOGE to keep the freeze in place indefinitely at the I.R.S.

Mr. Musk’s focus on technology was at the heart of a philosophical divide with Mr. Ramaswamy, the Ohio biotech entrepreneur, that ultimately forced him to walk away from DOGE.

Mr. Ramaswamy, a Yale-trained lawyer, had publicly spoken about a more policy-driven approach that revolved around regulatory rescissions to “dismantle the administrative state,” something he frequently pushed from the campaign trail.

A spokesman for Mr. Ramaswamy declined to comment.

The two men had publicly welcomed the chance to lead DOGE for Mr. Trump, and even floated the possibility of hosting a weekly podcast together. But their differences over how to set priorities quickly led to problems behind closed doors, according to transition aides.

Disagreements included minutiae such as which internal communications software to use. Mr. Musk’s annoyance became clear as he privately criticized Mr. Ramaswamy’s approach to the job to associates and kept a close hold on his plans for a more tech-based approach.

While Mr. Ramaswamy focused on conferring with budget hawks in Congress, several of Mr. Musk’s closest friends in Silicon Valley conducted interviews at Mar-a-Lago, Mr. Trump’s Florida resort, on behalf of the DOGE coalition. Some Ramaswamy allies now consider that a mistake, with one saying that Mr. Ramaswamy was “out-bodied” by Mr. Musk.

Mr. Musk, left, and Vivek Ramaswamy visited the Capitol together in December. Mr. Ramaswamy and Mr. Musk were originally tapped as partners to run DOGE.Credit…Haiyun Jiang for The New York Times

Some Trump advisers had also grown wary of Mr. Ramaswamy during the transition, concerned that the former presidential candidate was more interested in using his place in the administration to keep his name in the news and vault to political office.

Others argued that Mr. Ramaswamy’s interest in long-term budget cuts meant focusing on the political process to effect change.

As soon as Mr. Ramaswamy exited the presidential race in early 2024, he began thinking about a run for governor of Ohio. But the split over how to run DOGE hastened his decision to leave, according to Ramaswamy allies.

People close to both men said their differences were philosophical, not personal. Mr. Musk, for example, has told people that he plans to support Mr. Ramaswamy’s eventual bid for governor.

What was clear was that there was room for only one billionaire at DOGE.

Andrew Duehren, Maureen Farrell, Mike Isaac, Kate Kelly and David E. Sanger contributed reporting.

    • Dayton’s three losses have all come to ranked teams by a total of 14 points.

    • Those three losses are the only games where the opponent has shot more FTs than UD.

Nate Santos was named First Team Preseason All-Atlantic 10 after being named to the third team after last season.

    • Santos’ 6-for-6 shooting performance from deep against Lehigh is tied for the best in the nation.  It is also the second-best ever at UD, behind Shawn Haugh’s 8-for-8 in 1993-94.

Posh Alexander was named Second Team Preseason All-Atlantic 10 and to the Preseason All-Defensive Team.  Alexander is a fifth-year transfer who already has 1,000 career points and 500 career assists (1,423 and 587 respectively).  The fourth recruit from New York City in Anthony Grant‘s tenure at UD, he led the Big East in steals in each of the last four seasons (three at St. John’s and one at Butler).

Enoch Cheeks was also named A-10 Preseason All-Defensive Team.  He led the team in steals (40), was second in blocked shots (21), and was third in rebounding (4.7) in his first season at UD after transferring from Robert Morris.  The Providence, R.I. native was the 2023-24 winner of UD’s Steve McElvene Award.  Cheeks was consistently assigned the opponents’ top perimeter player on defense.  In the 25 games (out of 33) where the Flyer foe’s top player was a guard or wing, that player was held under his average 17 times. He started in all 33 games and averaged 8.1 points per game (9.5 in A-10 play).

    • The Dayton roster includes five players who have earned all-conference recognition in their past – junior forward Nate Santos (Atlantic 10), junior Enoch Cheeks (Horizon League). junior Javon Bennett (Northeast Conference), redshirt junior Malachi Smith (Atlantic 10) and fifth-year senior Posh Alexander (Big East).

Posh Alexander is second in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.4).

Zed Key is sixth in FG% (.641. 50-78).  He is also fifth in D-I (30) for most dunks .

    • As a team, Dayton leads the Atlantic 10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.76) and FG% (.487, 379-778) and is fourth in 3-pt. FG% (.352, 111-315).  UD is 13th nationally in A/T ratio.

    • UD ranked 20th in average attendance in NCAA Division I last season, averaging a capacity crowd of 13,407 fans a game in 2023-24.  Of schools in the top 25 in attendance, only Kansas, Purdue, Michigan State and UConn also sold out every game of the season.

    • Dayton has already announced it has sold out every game for the upcoming 2024-25 season, including both exhibition games that have already been played.  This will be the fourth consecutive year UD has sold out every home game.  That streak is now 68 games.

    • This is also the 55th anniversary season of UD Arena.  The Arena underwent a $76.2 million transformation project that was completed in time for the 2019-20 season.

    • Dayton’s 26-game homecourt win streak is the fourth-longest in Division I, behind Houston (29), Drake and UConn (27).  Data through 1/1.

    • The Flyers are wearing “DJD” on their left shoulder strap in memory of Don Donoher.  Coach Donoher died last April at the age of 92.  He was the first man to coach his alma mater in the NCAA tournament after appearing in it as a player.  A member of the NABC College Basketball Hall of Fame, he is Dayton’s all-time winningest coach (437 wins).  He was the 2017 winner of the USBWA’s Dean Smith Award.

  • Lake-effect snow squalls to impact post-holiday travels in Ontario

Southern Ontario will clear up Wednesday evening, with lake-effect snow continuing for the snowbelt regions. Snow will begin Wednesday morning in the Ottawa region, and become heavy through the day. By then end of the day, folks in the Ottawa region could see around 5 cm of snow.

The lake-effect flurries will affect the snowbelt regions on Thursday. Difficult travel can be expected along the 400 highway in the north, especially around Barrie and Orillia. Some of the impacted areas could see upwards of 40+ cm of snow.

Ontario forecast precipitation Thursday afternoon, lake-effect snow squalls - Jan. 1, 2025

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued snow squall watches and warnings for the Barrie area and Lake Huron shores, as well as for the Sault Ste. Marie area.

“Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common,” the agency states in their warning. “Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”

A cold polar airmass will move into Ontario and stick around through the beginning of January, fuelling the multi-day lake effect snow.

Southern Ontario forecast snow totals, snow squalls - Jan. 1, 2025

The snow will stick around through Friday, meandering south in Goderich, London and Woodstock.

As we enter the final stretch of the holiday season, travelers in Ontario should be prepared for potentially treacherous conditions as lake-effect snow squalls are forecasted to impact the region. These intense bands of snow, caused by cold air passing over the warmer waters of the Great Lakes, can bring sudden and heavy snowfall, greatly reducing visibility and creating hazardous driving conditions.

If you are planning to travel in the coming days, especially in areas near the Great Lakes such as Toronto, Hamilton, and Niagara Falls, it is important to stay updated on weather forecasts and road conditions. Consider adjusting your travel plans if necessary to avoid driving during peak squall activity.

Remember to drive cautiously, increase following distances, and allow extra time for your journey. Make sure your vehicle is equipped with winter tires and emergency supplies, such as a flashlight, extra blankets, and non-perishable snacks.

Stay safe and stay informed as you navigate through the winter wonderland of Ontario this holiday season.

What happened in Baddies Midwest episode 10?

As the Baddies Midwest episode started, PrettyP and Badd Dolly got into a fistfight after Dolly tried to defend Summer during an altercation. PrettyP emerged victorious, and Ivori expressed her appreciation for PrettyP, noting that most of the cast tends to go against her for no legitimate reason. Badd Dolly got the bad end of the strings as she further bruised her injured arm and needed medical attention.

“Me and PrettyP got something different. I understand her. Like, she didn’t fought Tinkaabellaaa, she didn’t fought Diamond. Diamond sneaking her. Her and Dolly was cool. Now, Dolly fighting her over Summer. Like, Pretty P’s back be against the wall sometimes,” Ivori expressed.

Natalie soon gathered the ladies around a bonfire and asked them to “turn up” during their club booking. The Baddies Midwest producer also teased that if some cast members were getting “boring” to watch, she would think about removing someone. Scotlynd and Emma even challenged each other to perform leg splits as accusations were thrown around.

Meanwhile, Dolly expressed her frustration with Big Lex for not backing her up during the fight with PrettyP and asked her to move out of her room. Lex took offense, explaining that PrettyP was initially fighting Summer, not Dolly, which is why she didn’t intervene. While most cast members expressed they were tired of fighting, they all left to perform in a club on their last night in Cleveland.

While performing, Big Lex didn’t appreciate Ivori calling Cleveland “her city,” which led Ivori to challenge anyone who wanted to confront her, including Lex.

“B*tch, as soon as we stepped on this bus, I wasted no time. B*tches is weird. This b*tch, Lex, is you okay, is you cool? ‘Cause b*tch, you keep addressing me. It seems like you still want an issue, like, you still want smoke,” Ivori said in a confessional.

Later, Natalie announced that the Baddies cast would be heading to Chicago two ways. One part of the crew would get to travel in a private jet while the rest would travel in the bus. While the cast speculated about who would be going home, Natalie gathered everyone outside the house to discuss leaving anyone behind.

The OGs staying with the newbies voted, resulting in Emma and Jazmin’s names coming up multiple times. This prompted Natalie to reveal that she would be flying on the jet with the OGs while they considered what to do with Emma and Jazmin. On the bus ride to Chicago, Diamond threw shade at Akbar, suggesting she should be the one to leave.

On the plane, many cast members of Baddies Midwest sympathized with Emma’s situation, as one of her kids was diagnosed with cancer. They believed that more appearances in the show would help her financially. Ultimately, Natalie decided to give Emma more time while the OGs reached the Chicago hotel before the newbies.

After reaching the rented place, Natalie decided to play a prank on Ivori by putting her and Big Lex’s names together. This irked Ivori as she arrived at the room and led to Big Lex and Ivori throwing punches at each other.
