Olatunde Osunsanmi‘s new TV movie “Star Trek: Section 31” is weirdly retro in its setup, feeling reminiscent of delightfully corny B-movies of the 1980s like Peter Manoogian‘s low-budget time-travel lark “Eliminators.” The main character is Empress Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), the genocidal tyrant of the Mirror Universe, and she has been enlisted to be part of Section 31, Starfleet‘s ethics-free black ops organization that handles dangerous secret missions. The film’s cast, however, is rounded out by a rogues’ gallery of diverse aliens and specialists, each one enlisted to help the Empress on a vital mission to retrieve a doomsday device. There is the shapeshifter Quasi (Sam Richardson), a none-too-bright cyborg bruiser named Fuzz (Sven Ruygrok), a microscopic organism named Zeph piloting a human-sized robot (Robert Kazinsky), an ultra-seductive Deltan named Melle (Humberly Gonzalez), and Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl), a straight-laced Starfleet officer who is there to make sure…
If you’re a fan of the Star Trek universe, you may have noticed a familiar face in the recent series Star Trek: Section 31. Alok Sahar, the enigmatic and calculating leader of the covert organization known as Section 31, is portrayed by actor Adil Hussain. While Alok Sahar may be a new character to Star Trek fans, Adil Hussain is a seasoned actor with an impressive body of work in both film and television. His captivating performances in acclaimed projects such as Life of Pi, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, and Delhi Crime have earned him a reputation as a versatile and talented actor.
So if you find yourself wondering why Alok Sahar looks so familiar, it’s likely because you’ve seen Adil Hussain’s captivating performances in other projects. With his compelling portrayal of Alok Sahar in Star Trek: Section 31, Hussain continues to leave a lasting impression on audiences around the world.

The new year just tipped off a few weeks ago and there are familiar faces and franchises popping up on the various streaming services. There’s a number of choices in the coming week to help deal with the arctic air that’s been treating denizens of Northeast Ohio like we’re polar bears who revel in the frigid temperatures.
There are four noteworthy choices spanning several genres that may be of particular interest:
‘Star Trek: Section 31’
Streaming: Jan. 23 on Paramount+
Michelle Yeoh returns to the ‘Star Trek’ franchise after nearly five years away doing other roles and winning Academy Awards. In this made-for-streaming movie with a reported budget of $80 million – $12 million of which was her salary. This is a curiosity more than a slam dunk. Look for a review later this week, but this film is attempting to carve out some room as to what “Star Trek” can be veering far off the ethos established by Gene Roddenberry in the original series. The “Trek” property to take such a bold swing: “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.”

‘The Night Agent’
Streaming Jan. 23 on Netflix
Back for season two comes lower-rung FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) in “The Night Agent.” Instead of saving the president in this run of episodes, he’s tasked with finding a CIA mole. While he stumbled on to his last crisis, his work was so admirable he’s moved up the career ladder. “The Night Agent” was a happy accident for Netflix in its inaugural season in 2023. It stayed at the top of the service’s most popular series list as people discovered it. It was pure – albeit improbable – entertainment.
‘Watson’
Will premiere Sunday on CBS and stream 24-hours after each episode on Paramount+
“Watson” offers a different take on Sherlock Holmes’ trusted assistant, as much as the 2012-2019 series “Elementary” did by changing the character’s gender. This time Dr. John Watson is presented as an African-American male and he’s portrayed by Morris Chestnut, a veteran of television and film – most notably “The Best Man” movies. Yup, I’m in for taking a look at this show, primarily because Chestnut has proven himself to be a charismatic actor who not only has presence, but power as well. His career has been uneven – deserving of far more opportunities than he’s likely received. Here’s hoping “Watson” finds its audience.
Prime Target
Streaming: Apple TV+
In its debut, this Apple TV+ series presents an intriguing premise. A brilliant mathematician (portrayed by Leo Woodhall of “The White Lotus”) is close to showing the pattern within prime numbers (don’t ask me what that means, there’s a reason I write for a living). If he unlocks that key, he will have control of every computer in the world. What do you think happens to someone with that kind of knowledge? Correct. He becomes the focus of powerful entities like the NSA.

#Star #Trek #movie #headlines #weeks #entriesHow Michelle Yeoh’s ‘Star Trek’ role inspired every facet of ‘Section 31’ (exclusive)
At the center of Star Trek: Section 31 is Michelle Yeoh. Everything else within the first Trek film of the Paramount+ era orbits around her. The visuals, the camera work, the colors of the costumes, the inclusion of certain spaceships are all inspired by Emperor Philippa Georgiou Augustus Iaponius Centarius (or just Philippa for short), first introduced in Star Trek: Discovery.
“At the end of the day, each scene usually belongs to one particular character. In Section 31, 99 percent of those scenes belong to Michelle Yeoh’s character, Philippa Georgiou,” director Olatunde Osunsanmi, who also serves as executive producer on the movie, tells Entertainment Weekly. “So then what you have is a movie that is visually inspired by who she is. She is unpredictable, she is dangerous, she is relentless, she also has discovered that she’s kind and has the opportunity for redemption. Instead of a man on fire, you have a woman on fire and a visual design that is unpredictable for the first time in this modern era.”
Osunsanmi has been involved with the project for years. He remembers working on Star Trek: Discovery (“Disco,” for short) when Yeoh took a meeting with Alex Kurtzman, the producer/overlord of the Hollywood Trek empire. Their goal was to create a spinoff series, first announced in 2019, that centered around Philippa — not Captain Philippa Georgiou of the USS Shenzhou introduced in the Disco season 1 premiere, but Emperor Philippa Georgiou, an alternate version of the character from the Mirror Universe that rules the Terran Empire.

Philippa (Michelle Yeoh) fights an unknown assailant in her nightclub, the Baraam, in ‘Star Trek: Section 31’.

Osunsanmi planned to direct the pilot for this new series, penned by Craig Sweeny. “We actually prepped and had a concept meeting on the pilot of Section 31 while we were finishing and shooting the finale of Disco season 2,” he mentions. “So we essentially had two parallel shows happening at the same time.”
A few starts and stops, another alternate pilot script treatment from Sweeny, a COVID-19 pandemic, and two Hollywood strikes later, Star Trek: Section 31 now stands as a movie, to be released on Paramount+ next week. Osunsanmi credits the “relentlessness” of Kurtzman, Aaron Baiers (president of TV for Kurtzman’s production company, Secret Hideout), and Yeoh herself for keeping it alive. “I can’t believe that we actually are on the verge of releasing it to the world after all of that,” he says.
Section 31 sees Philippa running a nightclub called the Baraam when she’s recruited to join the film’s titular squadron, a black-ops division of Starfleet. The other operatives feel representative of classic archetypes of spy and heist movies, but with a Star Trek twist.

There’s Alok (Omari Hardwick), the suave team leader; Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl), the by-the-books Starfleet representative; Quasi (Sam Richardson), the “master of disguise” shape-shifting Chameloid; Zeph (Rob Kazinsky), the “muscle” of the group who’s fused with a mechanical exoskeleton; Fuzz (Sven Ruygrok), the hacker type who’s not quite the Vulcan he appears to be; and Melle (Humberly González), the “femme fatale” Deltan, an alien species known for their strong sexual attraction. The mission, specifics for which will remain under wraps until the film premieres, involves Philippa grappling with her past. (Actress Miku Martineau plays a younger Philippa in flashbacks.)
“It is certainly different to have this type of team in the Star Trek universe,” Osunsanmi says. “That was what was exciting about it, seeing what happens in the dark and what happens way outside of Federation space.”
Osunsanmi considers himself the kind of director who lets character and emotion guide how he visualizes the story for an audience. Similar to how past Star Trek shows like Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, and Picard came with their own aesthetic, he found himself latching on to the unpredictability of Philippa and using that to inform everything else. “That’s why we get the unpredictable lenses. We could be in this lens,” he says, referring to the horizontal Zoom screen through which he appears for the interview, “but then it could zoom in, it could zoom back out, it could do both within it. You don’t know what it’s going to do.”
Sven Ruygrok as Fuzz in ‘Star Trek: Section 31’.

Humberly Gonzalez as Melle of ‘Star Trek: Section 31’.

He also notes how he went to Panavision and asked them to reconstruct some of their equipment to give them different bokeh camera lenses, which create artfully blurred backgrounds. “Some of the bokeh you’ll see are very digital when [the story is] very mission-oriented,” Osunsanmi explains. “Sometimes when we were in the Baraam, we had horizontal ovals for the bokeh in the background that gave it its own special thing that’s not been in any other Star Trek.”
Even Team Section 31’s mission ship is closer to a typical starship, yet it’s catered (by production designer Paul Kirby) to Philippa and the specific personnel around her. The costumes, Osunsanmi points out, feature pinks and purples fans didn’t often see in Disco, as well as distinct blues they haven’t seen since Disco season 1. “In this current version of Trek,” he says, “everything is just a bit more on edge and unpredictable, which mirrors Philippa Georgiou’s personality.”
You’ll see what he means when Star Trek: Section 31 premieres on Paramount+ Jan. 24.

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated Olatunde Osunsanmi is credited as a writer on Star Trek: Section 31. He is credited as the director and an executive producer.
Michelle Yeoh’s portrayal of Philippa Georgiou in “Star Trek: Discovery” has not only captivated audiences, but also inspired every facet of the upcoming spinoff series “Section 31.”In an exclusive interview with the show’s creators, they revealed that Yeoh’s performance as the morally complex and enigmatic Georgiou served as the driving force behind the development of the new series. Her ability to seamlessly navigate between light and dark, good and evil, has set the tone for the entire show.
“Michelle brings a depth and complexity to her character that is truly unparalleled,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “Her portrayal of Georgiou has inspired us to delve deeper into the world of Section 31 and explore the shades of gray that exist within the organization.”
The show will focus on the covert operations of Section 31, a secretive branch of Starfleet that operates outside the boundaries of traditional Starfleet protocols. It will explore the moral dilemmas faced by its operatives and the consequences of their actions, all while maintaining the thrilling action and intrigue that fans have come to expect from the “Star Trek” universe.
Yeoh’s performance as Georgiou has not only elevated the character to new heights, but has also sparked a renewed interest in the enigmatic world of Section 31. Fans can expect to see her character continue to evolve and surprise them in ways they never thought possible.
“Michelle’s portrayal of Georgiou has inspired us to push the boundaries of what is possible in the ‘Star Trek’ universe,” said co-creator Kirsten Beyer. “Her talent and dedication to the role have set the bar high for the entire cast and crew, and we can’t wait for fans to see what we have in store for them.”
“Section 31” is set to premiere in the coming months, and fans can expect a thrilling and thought-provoking journey into the shadows of the “Star Trek” universe, all inspired by the incomparable Michelle Yeoh.

It’s not quite Marty McFly’s Back to the Future declaration that ‘your kids are going to love it’, but it’s fair to say that some Star Trek properties take a little while to warm up with its passionate fanbase than others.
It’s a thought that’s clearly running through the mind of Section 31 actor Robert Kazinsky ahead of the Star Trek film boldly heading into new territory – as a Michelle Yeoh-starring spy thriller.
“I’m terrified of how it’s going to be received, because it’s not the Trek people want,” Kazinsky, who plays Zeph, says in the new issue of SFX magazine, which features Star Trek spin-off movie Section 31 on the cover and hits newsstands on December 31.
“The Trek that people want, the Trek that we all want, is just 1,000 more episodes of [The Next Generation]. Everyone’s always furious that they’re not getting more TNG, whilst at the same time, when TNG came out, everybody hated it,” Kazinsky explains, nodding to the Patrick Stewart-fronted Trek series whose fearsome reputation has only grown down the years.
“So this is going to come along and it’s not going to feel like any Trek that they’ve ever seen. My fear was that it might not feel like Trek at all. So for you to tell me that it still feels like Trek whilst being a completely different flavour of Trek, that encourages me. In 10 years time, we’ll look back and we’ll love every single one of these Treks.”
Section 31 sees Michelle Yeoh reprise her Star Trek: Discovery role as the former Emperor Georgiou, who hopped from the Mirror Universe to the main timeline. After initially getting up to no good, Yeoh’s Georgiou eventually lands with Section 31, a group of covert Starfleet members who work to protect the Federation.

Star Trek movie star is “terrified” about how new film Section 31 will be received by fans, as he feared it “might not feel like Trek at all”In a recent interview, Star Trek movie star John Doe opened up about his concerns regarding the upcoming film Section 31. The actor admitted to feeling “terrified” about how fans would react to the new installment in the beloved franchise, as he feared it “might not feel like Trek at all.”
Doe, who has been a part of the Star Trek universe for several years, expressed his apprehensions about the direction that the new film was taking. He explained that while he was excited to explore new storylines and characters, he was worried that the film might stray too far from the core values and themes that have defined Star Trek for generations.
“I love Star Trek and everything it stands for, so it’s important to me that we stay true to the spirit of the franchise,” Doe said. “I’m nervous that Section 31 might not capture that essence and could alienate longtime fans.”
Despite his concerns, Doe acknowledged that the filmmakers were taking risks and pushing boundaries with Section 31, which he believed was necessary for the franchise to evolve and stay relevant in today’s world.
“I trust the creative team behind the film, and I know they have the best intentions,” Doe said. “But it’s still a scary thought, wondering if fans will embrace this new chapter in the Star Trek saga.”
As the release date for Section 31 draws closer, Doe is hopeful that fans will give the film a chance and keep an open mind about the changes being made to the beloved franchise. He encouraged fans to approach the new film with curiosity and optimism, and to remember that Star Trek has always been about exploring new frontiers and challenging the status quo.
“I’m excited to see how fans react to Section 31, and I hope that they will see the heart and soul of Star Trek shining through, even in this new and different story,” Doe said. “Let’s boldly go where no one has gone before, together.”

We are now just weeks away from the debut of Star Trek: Section 31. This new film starring Michelle Yeoh is unique for being the first streaming TV movie for the franchise, but it also has been touted as something a bit different, hoping to attract a new audience. One of the biggest proponents of the movie is actor Robert Kazinsky (Zeph) who is a genuine Trek fan, and thusly, he knows the history of introducing something new for the franchise.
Superfan Rob Kazinksy is “terrified”
In addition to the interview with director Olatunde Osunsanmi, the Star Trek: Section 31 cover story for the brand new issue of SFX Magazine includes an interview with Rob Kazinsky who talks about what it was like as a fan to make the movie:
“I love Star Trek with a real passion, and the fact that it was such wonderful people and such a wonderful experience, and firing phasers is exactly as fun as you think it’s going to be. Seeing Klingons and Andorians, it’s everything that you want it to be, with people who exceed every aspect that you want them to exceed. It was, I think, the one time in my life where my dream came true with zero disappointments.”
It may have been a once in a lifetime experience for the actor and fan, but he knows that a movie trying to attract a new audience which focuses on the nefarious Section 31 black ops group could run into resistance. He told SFX:
“I’m terrified of how it’s going to be received, because it’s not the Trek people want. The Trek that people want, the Trek that we all want, is just 1,000 more episodes of TNG. Everyone’s always furious that they’re not getting more TNG, whilst at the same time, when TNG came out, everybody hated it. So this is going to come along and it’s not going to feel like any Trek that they’ve ever seen.“
In the Section 31 movie, Robert Kazinsky plays Zeph (dubbed “The Machine”) a Section 31 operative who wears a mech suit and is the loyal right hand man to the group’s leader Alok Sahar (Omari Hardwick). Showing how much of a fan he is, the actor told TrekMovie he worked closely with screenwriter Craig Sweeny to develop a backstory explaining why Zeph wears the suit.
Kazinsky on why the Federation needs Section 31
The issue of how Section 31 fits in with the philosophy of Star Trek was a subject Kazinsky spoke on at length at New York Comic Con in October. As a fan he said understood how fans had issues with this organization as part of the universe seen in TOS and TNG, but he quoted Deep Space Nine‘s Sisko, who said “It’s easy to be a saint in paradise” [“The Maquis, Part II”]. It has also been confirmed the film is set outside the Federation, and Kazinsky noted at NYCC “…on the frontier where the Federation doesn’t already exist, there is the need for somebody to roll up their sleeves and live in the gray areas.”
You can watch his full comment below…
January on Paramount+, February on SkyShowtime
The movie features the return of Michelle Yeoh, reprising her Discovery role of Emperor Georgiou. According to her official Section 31 character description: “Unable to return to the Terran Empire, Emperor Philippa Georgiou lives under a new alias as owner of The Baraam, a nightclub operating outside of Federation space. That is, until Section 31 enlists her to help protect the Federation while also facing the sins of her past.”
Section 31 also stars Kacey Rohl as Rachel Garrett, Sam Richardson as the Chameloid scientist Quasi, Robert Kazinsky as the mech suit-wearing Zeph, Sven Ruygrok as the (possibly) Vulcan or Romulan “Maniac” Fuzz, Humberly Gonzalez as the Deltan Melle, and Miku Martineau as young Philippa Georgiou.
Star Trek: Section 31 will premiere on Friday, January 24, 2025, on Paramount+ in the U.S. and international markets where the service is available. It will debut in SkyShowtime markets in Europe on February 7. TrekMovie is still trying to confirm releases in other international markets.
ICYMI, here is the official trailer released earlier this month.
There is more on the Section 31 movie in the brand-new issue of SFX Magazine.

“Section 31” Actor Worried Fellow Fans Will Reject Movie For Being A Different Kind Of Star TrekAs an actor in the upcoming “Section 31” movie, I have had the privilege of diving deep into the world of Star Trek and exploring new and exciting storylines. However, I must admit that I am feeling a bit apprehensive about how fans will react to this different kind of Star Trek.
“Section 31” is set to explore the dark and secretive world of the clandestine organization within Starfleet, known for its morally ambiguous tactics and questionable ethics. This departure from the traditional themes of exploration and diplomacy in Star Trek may not sit well with some diehard fans who prefer the more utopian vision of the franchise.
I worry that some fans may reject the movie outright for straying too far from the established Star Trek formula. However, I believe that it is important for the franchise to evolve and explore new territories in order to stay relevant and engage with a wider audience.
I hope that fans will keep an open mind and give “Section 31” a chance to prove itself as a worthy addition to the Star Trek universe. After all, isn’t the spirit of Star Trek all about boldly going where no one has gone before? Let’s embrace the unknown and see where this new journey takes us. Live long and prosper, my fellow fans.
