Chiefs Reportedly Not Planning to Use Franchise or Transition Tag on Trey Smith

Title: Exclusive Report: Chiefs to Let Trey Smith Hit Free Agency, Sources Say

    Post:

In a surprising turn of events, sources close to the Kansas City Chiefs have revealed that the team is not expected to use the franchise or transition tag on standout offensive lineman Trey Smith. This decision means that Smith will hit free agency and have the opportunity to sign with any team in the league.

Smith, a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, quickly established himself as a key contributor on the Chiefs’ offensive line. His impressive play and versatility have garnered attention from across the league, making him a hot commodity in free agency.

While the Chiefs have expressed interest in re-signing Smith, it appears that they are willing to let him test the market and see what offers he receives. This move could be a calculated gamble by Kansas City, as they may be hoping to bring Smith back at a more team-friendly price after he explores his options.

Fans of the Chiefs will undoubtedly be following this situation closely as the team navigates the complexities of free agency. Will Trey Smith return to Kansas City, or will he find a new home in the NFL? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – the Chiefs are in for an interesting offseason. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Mike Woodson defends Trey Galloway

Indiana basketball is in the midst of a struggling stretch, including four losses in its last five games, and the dissatisfaction from IU’s fanbase has only grown in recent weeks. The most notable example came two weeks ago during IU’s 25-point loss against Illinois in Bloomington, where droves of fans left the game at halftime, chants of “fire Woodson” rained down, and boos echoed throughout Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

During the game, though, a portion of the crowd’s disdain was directed toward Trey Galloway. The fifth-year guard was audibly booed in the first half after being substituted out and walking toward Indiana’s bench.

Galloway, who underwent offseason knee surgery, has been inconsistent throughout much of this season. Over the last five games, Galloway is averaging 6.0 points, 4.4 assists and 1.4 rebounds in 28 minutes per game. His shooting averages have slipped significantly during that span, shooting just 31.4 percent from the field, 38.8 percent from 2-point range (7-of-18) and 23.5 percent from 3-point range (4-of-17).

On his radio show Monday night, Indiana coach Mike Woodson addressed the negativity directed toward Galloway and defended him.

“It’s just not right that the fans are doing what they’re doing to him,” Woodson said, “because I think he’s working his butt off. He plays hard, he tries to do the right things. He doesn’t always get it right, I mean, I get that.”

Galloway was a mainstay in Indiana’s starting lineup for a majority of the season until recently. After IU suffered consecutive 25-point losses against Illinois and Iowa, Woodson opted to change the starting lineup in a road game at Ohio State and moved Galloway to the bench in favor of fifth-year guard Anthony Leal. Galloway has come off the bench in each of Indiana’s games since then.

“I love him to death. His teammates love him,” Woodson said. “I know when I put him out there he’s going to work his butt off and play hard for us. He makes mistakes just like all players make mistakes, but some of those mistakes you just gotta live with them.”

Galloway is not even a full year removed from his knee surgery last spring. He was limited for much of Indiana’s offseason workouts and preseason practices, but he returned to the court in time for IU’s season-opener Nov. 6 against SIU-Edwardsville.

While Galloway has not mentioned his knee recovery as a reason for his struggles this season, his production has notably dipped this season after a career-best 2023-24 campaign. Galloway is averaging 3.5 fewer points, 0.5 fewer assists and 7.4 fewer minutess this season compared to last season. He’s also shooting 5.5 percent worse from the field and 12.1 percent worse from 2-point range with improvements in his 3-point rate (26.0 percent to 35.0 percent) and free-throw rate (53.3 percent to 63.3 percent).

“Listen, I love everything about Trey Galloway,” Woodson said. “I’ve always loved Trey Galloway. Since I’ve had him he’s been probably one of the hardest working young men that I’ve coached.”

Added Woodson: “I’ll go to war with Trey all day long, every day.”

In the wake of recent criticism surrounding freshman guard Trey Galloway’s performance on the court, Indiana University head coach Mike Woodson has come to his defense.

In a press conference, Woodson praised Galloway’s work ethic, dedication, and overall impact on the team. He emphasized that Galloway is a key player for the Hoosiers and has contributed significantly to their success this season.

Woodson also noted that Galloway’s versatility, defensive prowess, and basketball IQ make him a valuable asset to the team, despite any struggles he may face on the court.

Overall, Woodson’s unwavering support for Galloway sends a strong message to critics and fans alike that he believes in the young player’s potential and is confident in his abilities to continue making positive contributions to the team.

  • Dallas Cowboys’ 2025 free agent profile and prediction: QB Trey Lance

The Dallas Cowboys have a long list of unrestricted free agents who will officially hit the open market in a little less than two months. Of those, six or seven were significant contributors in 2024, meaning the Cowboys have some difficult decisions ahead of them in the coming weeks.

Today’s free agent profile series examines a player who wasn’t one of those significant contributors because he barely saw the field last season. That would be quarterback Trey Lance.

    Washington Commanders v Dallas Cowboys

2024 Regular Season Stats: 4G, 61% Completion Percentage, 266 Passing Yards, 13 1D, 40% Passing Success Rate, 1 INT, 11 Rushing Attempts, 41 Rushing Yards

Year Review: Trey Lance’s 2024 season with the Dallas Cowboys was characterized by limited opportunities and mixed performances. The 24-year-old quarterback, who the Cowboys acquired in August of 2023, spent nearly the entirety of the regular season as Dallas’ third-string quarterback.

Even when Dak Prescott went down with a season-ending injury in Week 9, Dallas refused to elevate Lance to the starting lineup, leaving him cemented behind Cooper Rush as their clear backup. Lance got some brief playing time during a blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10, but after that, he did not see the field for more than one snap until the final week of the regular season.

Dallas gave Lance a chance to start their regular-season finale against the Commanders, and the results were not pretty. The former first-round pick completed just 20 of his 34 passes for 244 yards and consistently struggled to hit open receivers. Lance’s performance made it clear that he currently does not possess the accuracy to become a stating-caliber quarterback at the NFL level.

The decision to trade for Lance has always been a head-scratching move, but not playing him in a lost season until the year’s final game may be even more confusing. Dallas had a golden opportunity to give Lance three or four starts down the stretch to see what he could do in an extended playing period. Instead, they waited until the final week of the year and threw Lance to the fire without their best offensive weapon in CeeDee Lamb.

Regardless, Lance did not take advantage of the opportunity and capped off a very tumultuous season with his poor showing against the Commanders.

Free Agency Outlook: The Cowboys declined Lance’s fifth-year option before the start of the regular season, so he is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March.

Given Lance’s lack of playing time, it’s hard to project what the quarterback’s market will look like this spring. With so much inexperience and on-field struggles when he did get a chance to play, it’s not likely a team is willing to give Lance a multi-year contract. The 24-year-old will likely have to sign a one-year deal to hopefully serve as a team’s backup next season.

Even with all the negatives going against him, there could still be some teams that are infatuated with Lance’s potential. His mobility and athleticism could be an intriguing trait to an organization that believes they could fix his accuracy issues.

Last offseason, we saw 23 quarterbacks sign free-agent deals. Despite Lance’s struggles, there will always be a demand for good quarterback play, and teams will always be willing to give players a second chance. Last spring, Mason Rudolph and Carson Wentz signed one-year deals worth $2.8M and $3.2M, respectively. This is likely a good benchmark for where Lance could end up AAV-wise on a potential one-year deal.

Cowboys Verdict: When the Cowboys traded for Trey Lance back in August 2023, the move made little to no sense. Today, the same thing rings true, and his time in Dallas has almost certainly come to an end.

With all Dallas’ other needs to address this offseason, it’s hard to see them allocating even a small amount of cap space to bring back Lance and have him serve as their backup or third-string quarterback. To make a Lance return even more unlikely, Dallas’ long-time backup quarterback, Cooper Rush, is also a free agent this offseason.

Unless a team gives Rush a deal to let him compete for a starting spot, there’s virtually zero chance Dallas would choose to bring Lance back over the veteran. While Rush has not lit the world on fire when he filled in as the starter, he has won some games, and right or wrong, the organization has plenty of faith in his ability to steady the ship if Dak Prescott is to go down again.

Overall, Trey Lance’s tenure as a Dallas Cowboy will end with more questions than answers, as the former first-round pick will search for his next opportunity this March.

Prediction: Trey Lance signs a one-year, $2.5M deal with the New York Jets

As the Dallas Cowboys head into the 2025 offseason, one of the biggest decisions they will have to make is what to do with quarterback Trey Lance, who is set to become a free agent. Lance, who was drafted by the Cowboys in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has shown flashes of brilliance during his time in Dallas, but has also struggled with inconsistency.

At just 24 years old, Lance still has plenty of potential and could develop into a franchise quarterback for the Cowboys. However, with his contract set to expire, the team will have to decide whether or not to commit to him long-term.

    Prediction:

It is likely that the Cowboys will look to re-sign Lance, as they have invested a lot in his development and see him as a key piece of their future. With a strong supporting cast of offensive weapons and a solid offensive line, Lance has the tools he needs to succeed in Dallas.

Ultimately, I predict that the Cowboys will offer Lance a lucrative contract extension, keeping him in Dallas for the foreseeable future. With the right coaching and support, Lance could develop into one of the top quarterbacks in the league and lead the Cowboys to success in the years to come.

  • Why Pelicans need big strides in ‘mature’ Trey Murphy III’s ballhandling skills

Willie Green and the New Orleans Pelicans have no excuses for some recent losses. Collectively, fans can be forgiven for tuning out given the circumstances. The team cannot though and individual player development is the best place to look for silver linings amid an otherwise lost season. Rookie big man Yves Missi’s defense and breakout wingman Trey Murphy III‘s on-ball creation top those charts.

Missi is worth mentioning in this year’s NBA All-Rookie voting. Murphy III is laying the foundation and making a case for future NBA All-Star Game considerations. With the NBA Playoffs all but out of reach, Green spent some time talking with ClutchPoints about Murphy III’s maturity and much-improved ball-handling skills.

“It’s rewarding to see one of our younger players just continue to mature in his basketball career and the credit goes to Trey,” Green said. “(Murphy III) puts the work in. He is watching film, getting in the gym, and getting extra work in at night. Really good to see and he will be very, very, good as his career progresses.”

This evolution isn’t just about one aspect of Murphy III’s game and Green’s optimism moving forward is both undeniable and understandable. The 24-year-old averaging 21.2 points is equipped with a handful of lethal offensive options. However, crafty ballhandling is a crucial building block, a stepping stone to an NBA All-Star level skillset.

“I think it is something that (Trey Murphy III) is adding to what he can do. He came in as a shooter and added being able to get to the basket at an elite level,” Green noted. “He is getting to the free-throw line, rebounding is going up. We are starting to see Trey handle the ball a bit more in our offensive possessions and attack guys off the dribble. As long as he continues to work on it and do it with confidence like he has been doing, the sky is really the limit for him.”

The sharpshooter has now evolved into a multi-dimensional player on the court. Now the Pelicans need to see just how much Trey Murphy III can handle before next season. The synergy between a stable lineup and individual development is pivotal for a young team like the Pelicans. Willie Green, having been denied that luxury since taking the job, admitted that would be easier with a fully healthy roster.

“It’s really more about having healthy guys and then having consistency with that group,” Green explained. “That is what we are starting to see now. We’ve had very similar lineups and very similar lineup changes in terms of going to the second unit. Guys know this is when I’m going to play, this is when I’ll come out. We’re hoping to have more consistency with (the rotations).”

The Pelicans want to save money in any NBA Trade Deadline deal. However, Willie Green and the front office should be on the same page when it comes to spending time letting Trey Murphy III run the offense. Dejounte Murray, CJ McCollum, and Zion Williamson are known commodities. Let the 6-foot-9 wingman work out some issues when the stakes are lowest. There is not much to lose at this point of the season. Getting a better handle on next season’s needs is more important, especially with Murphy III inked to a new multi-year deal. It seems he can handle the responsibilities.

Pelicans fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming NBA season, and one player they have their eyes on is Trey Murphy III. The young forward showed great promise in his rookie year, but there is one area of his game that needs significant improvement – his ballhandling skills.

Murphy, known for his sharpshooting and defensive prowess, has the potential to be a versatile player for the Pelicans. However, in order to reach his full potential, he must become more comfortable handling the ball and creating his own shot.

Improving his ballhandling skills will not only make Murphy a more well-rounded player, but it will also make him a more valuable asset to the Pelicans. With the departure of Lonzo Ball and the uncertainty surrounding Zion Williamson’s future, the team will need players who can create their own shot and take pressure off of their star players.

If Murphy can make big strides in his ballhandling skills this offseason, he could become a key contributor for the Pelicans and help them make a push for the playoffs. Fans are hopeful that the young forward will put in the work and come back next season ready to take his game to the next level.

  • Jets Conducting Second GM Interviews With Trey Brown, Darren Mougey

After the Titans and Raiders filled their general manager positions, the Jets were the only team still looking to fill a vacancy at that position, until the Jaguars made the move to fire their GM today. Now, the Jets have a bit more pressure on the clock if they want to make sure their top candidate doesn’t get hired away to Jacksonville. To that effort, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported today that Broncos assistant GM Darren Mougey and Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown will be brought in for second interviews with New York tomorrow.

Mougey and Brown both interviewed with the Jets on the same day for their first interview, as well. Mougey has been a fast riser in Denver, working his way up from intern to assistant GM. He’s provided the front office with a bit of continuity over the past few years, as he is one of the few executives to work under both former general manager John Elway and current general manager George Paton.

A Kansas City-area native, Brown is 39 but has been in the NFL ranks since 2010. Brown got his front office start in New England before joining Philly’s operation in 2013. He ended up spending six years with the Eagles, working his way up to director of college scouting. After a few years in the AAF and XFL, he landed with the Bengals in 2021. Brown was already popular during last year’s cycle, with the executive earning an interview with the Raiders while also landing on the Patriots’ short list of candidates, as well.

They join Commanders assistant GM Lance Newmark as the only candidates who will have received second interviews so far. Newmark had been trending along with new head coach Aaron Glenn as the likely hire, but Pelissero notes that the team bringing in Mougey and Brown does not rule out Newmark as a candidate. Newmark was in the building with Glenn on Monday, and the team may just want Glenn to get facetime with a couple more candidates before making their decision.

Here’s how the Jets’ general manager search is shaping up so far:

The New York Jets are continuing their search for a new general manager, and they have narrowed it down to two candidates: Trey Brown and Darren Mougey. Both candidates have already gone through initial interviews with the team, but now they are set to undergo a second round of interviews.

Trey Brown currently serves as the assistant general manager for the Philadelphia Eagles, where he has been instrumental in the team’s success in recent years. He has a strong background in player evaluation and salary cap management, making him a well-rounded candidate for the Jets’ GM position.

Darren Mougey, on the other hand, is currently the director of player personnel for the Baltimore Ravens. He has a proven track record of identifying talent and building successful rosters, which could make him a valuable asset to the Jets organization.

Both Brown and Mougey have impressed the Jets’ ownership and front office during the initial interviews, and now they have the opportunity to make their case for why they should be the next general manager of the team. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as the Jets get closer to making a decision on their new GM.

CINCINNATI — A piece of the Bengals’ front office is gaining more ground for an open general manager spot. According to CBS Sports’s Jonathan Jones, the New York Jets have requested a second interview with Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown for their open general manager position.

They are also extending a second interview to Denver Broncos assistant general manager Darren Mougey and already had one with Commanders AGM Lance Newmark.

Brown is essentially the right-hand man to Duke Tobin and has received a plethora of GM looks over the past few years. He joined the Bengals front office in 2021.

The Cincinnati Bengals’ Director of Player Personnel, Trey Brown, has been making waves in the NFL front office circles as he recently received his second general manager interview with the New York Giants.

Brown, who has been with the Bengals organization for nearly a decade, has played a key role in building the team’s roster and scouting talent. His eye for talent and strong work ethic has garnered attention from other teams looking to bolster their front office.

While the Bengals would hate to lose a valuable member of their front office, they understand that opportunities like this are rare and wish Brown all the best in his interview with the Giants.

  • Jets plan second G.M. interviews with Darren Mougey, Trey Brown

The Jets have found their head coach, now they need to find their General Manager.

Aaron Glenn has agreed to a deal to coach the team and their search for a G.M. to work with him will expand to include at least two more interviews. According to multiple reports, the team will have second interviews with Broncos assistant G.M. Darren Mougey and Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown.

The Jets had Commanders assistant G.M. Lance Newmark in for a second interview this week and his prior work with the Lions while Glenn was in Detroit suggested that they might come in as a package.

That’s not the case at this point and the Jets may be headed in a different direction when all is said and done.

The New York Jets are moving forward with their search for a new general manager, as they plan to conduct second interviews with candidates Darren Mougey and Trey Brown. Both candidates have impressed the team with their experience and vision for the future of the franchise.

Mougey, currently the assistant director of player personnel for the Arizona Cardinals, has a strong background in player evaluation and scouting. He has been instrumental in helping the Cardinals build a competitive roster and is seen as a rising star in the NFL front office.

Brown, on the other hand, is the director of player personnel for the Philadelphia Eagles and has a proven track record of success in talent evaluation and team building. He has played a key role in the Eagles’ recent success and is highly respected within the league.

The Jets are looking to find a new general manager who can help lead the team back to contention and build a sustainable winning culture. With Mougey and Brown as top candidates, the future looks bright for the Jets as they continue their search for the right person to lead the team. • Lakers Sign Trey Jemison To Two-Way Deal

10:00 pm: Jemison’s two-way deal is official, per NBA.com’s transaction log.

5:15 pm: Hot off the heels of waiving former two-way point guard Quincy Olivari, the Lakers intend to sign free agent center Trey Jemison to their newly available two-way slot, sources tell Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report and Marc Stein (Twitter link).

The 6’11” big man out of UAB had most recently been on a two-way deal with the Pelicans. New Orleans waived him last week.

Across 16 bouts with the injury-plagued Pelicans at the NBA level this year, Jemison averaged 2.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 10.4 minutes per game.

Jemison went undrafted in 2023 and joined New Orleans’ G League affiliate, the Birmingham Squadron, as an affiliate player at the start of the 2023/24 season. He subsequently signed 10-day contracts with the Wizards and Grizzlies, and was later picked up by Memphis on a two-way deal to close out the season. Jemison was cut by the Grizzlies this past summer, before being picked up by the Pelicans.

Playing for Birmingham last season, Jemison averaged 10.9 points, 12.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.5 blocks in 31.6 minutes per contest across 25 total outings.

Jemison is now the second center inked to a two-way deal for Los Angeles, joining Christian Koloko. The Lakers have been dealing with long-term injuries to several of their reserve big men this season. It makes sense that the team’s front office is seeking out immediate, short-term help at the five spot to spell All-NBA center Anthony Davis.

Forward Armel Traore is the Lakers’ third rostered two-way player.

Shams Charania of ESPN tweets that Jemison helps bolster the club’s frontcourt as a physical post presence. As a two-way player, he’ll likely split his time between L.A.’s G League club, the South Bay Lakers, and the NBA squad.

Reserve Lakers center Christian Wood and forward Jarred Vanderbilt have been sidelined all season while recuperating from offseason surgeries. Backup Los Angeles center Jaxson Hayes has been in and out of the lineup for much of the year with his own ailments. Koloko has had to log significant time as occasionally the team’s only legitimate healthy center behind Davis. Meanwhile Davis, who has his own history of injuries, has been the Lakers’ steadiest rotational big man.

The Los Angeles Lakers have made a move to bolster their roster by signing center Trey Jemison to a two-way deal. Jemison, a 7-foot-0 big man, provides depth and size to the Lakers’ frontcourt.

The University of Alabama Birmingham product had an impressive collegiate career, averaging 5.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. He also showcased his shot-blocking ability, averaging 1.3 blocks per game.

Jemison will split his time between the Lakers and their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. This two-way deal allows him to gain valuable experience and development in the G League while also being able to contribute to the Lakers when called upon.

With Jemison’s size, defensive prowess, and potential to grow, the Lakers have made a smart move to add depth to their roster. Fans can look forward to seeing how Jemison can contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming season.

The LA Lakers made another mid-season roster move.

Through 38 games played, the LA Lakers have a 21-17 record, which leaves them mid-table as the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference. While it would be good enough to make the playoffs and avoid the Play-In Tournament, the conference is tight-knit for the mid-table teams and they could easily fall a few seeds down with a bad stretch of play.

Led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers have plenty of potential. The club is looking to make roster tweaks to help first-year head coach JJ Redick as they project to be a playoff team, though they need to sharpen up their game to become title contenders.

While the team made a mid-season trade to land Dorian Finney-Smith, they recently waived one player to make room for Trey Jamison, who recently played for the New Orleans Pelicans.

What JJ Redick told Jemison just after he signed with the Lakers

In-season moves are quite common across the NBA as teams see what areas they might be able to improve. The Lakers added Jemison for one key reason.

The 6-foot-11, 260-pound center brings a wealth of size to add down low and bring in off the bench to have a force against the opposition. Anthony Davis doesn’t quite have the size of Jemison, so it’s a good asset to have on the bench.

Redick even let Jemison know what they were looking for with his addition, meaning he knows exactly what to bring for the Lakers.

Asked what Redick told him, Jemison responded: “I gotta be a dog, man. Just bring great energy on the bench, games, talking loud. Be physical man,” Jemison explained.

“Just be extremely physical, just help, you know what I’m saying? I’m not here to be a superstar and I’m not here to score a lot of points; rebound, block shots, play defense.”

Doing the dirty work and using his physicality is going to give Jemison direction when he hits the floor for the Lakers, which is what any role player can do to provide value when they aren’t a star.

Jemison reveals his plan before joining the Lakers

The 6-foot-11 center made his NBA debut during the 2023-24 NBA season, and he played 25 games — two with the Washington Wizards and 23 with the Memphis Grizzlies — before joining the Pelicans this season.

Jemison has averaged 10.4 minutes per game for the Pelicans. He was prepared to join the Birmingham Squadron — the Pelicans’ G League affiliate — after being cut by the club, as he revealed.

“Frustrated, hurt [at being cut by New Orleans]. But just trusting God, man, knowing tomorrow will work out. I ended up going back to Birmingham to practice with the G League,” Jemison revealed.

“Going through their practice and watching them practice, I think I’m gonna play with them. And got a phone call from JJ, Changed overnight, so be grateful, man.”

Jemison was going to return to the G League as he was working out in Birmingham again, though things quickly changed for him. That was just before Redick told him what they needed from him in Los Angeles, too.
