  • Australian tennis bosses forced to step in after star promotes Russia and makes trip | Tennis | Sport

Australian tennis bosses stepped in after Thanasi Kokkinakis defied advice by competing in a Russian exhibition.

The world No. 71 entered the North Palmyra Trophies event in St Petersburg at the end of November.

In an interview for the tournament, he said the city and the people were “really nice”.

It has now emerged that Kokkinakis was reportedly strongly advised against going to Russia to compete. The tournament is said to be backed by state-owned energy giant Gazprom, which is blacklisted by the Australian federal government.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Tennis Australia has now issued a statement warning players not to compete in Russian exhibition tournaments.

“For several years, Tennis Australia has publicly and privately supported Ukraine athletes and sought and abided by federal government policy and recommendations in regard to Russia. This support and compliance continues,” it read.

“We advise athletes against competing in Russia and are in ongoing discussions with DFAT to provide education to players about the potential ramifications for doing business in this area.”

They also reported that Kokkinakis, who is managed by Tennis Australia’s player management team, was “strongly advised” not to compete in the country.

The 28-year-old was listed as a participating player on the North Palmyra Trophies tournament website. In singles, he played against Karen Khachanov and Roberto Bautista Agut.

Kokkinakis also appeared on camera in an interview for the tournament. He remembered visiting St Petersburg in 2015 and said: “Everyone is so nice here.

“People are lovely. It’s a really nice city so hopefully I can explain a little bit more. Maybe after the next few days I can tell you what’s nice.”

The ATP and WTA Tours previously held tournaments in St Petersburg and other Russian cities before the war in Ukraine started. Players from Russia and Belarus have also competed as neutrals since 2022.

The North Palmyra Trophies has been staged for the last three years. In 2023, the WTA said it was “not supportive” of the event but did not stop its players from competing.

The ATP has also not imposed sanctions on players for entering Russian exhibition events during the off-season, as players are independent contractors and can choose their schedules.

The world No. 71 skipped the Brisbane International in the first week of the 2025 season. Kokkinakis then entered the Adelaide International but withdrew before his quarter-final.

The Aussie lost his second-round singles match at Melbourne Park and was visibly struggling with a pec injury. The following day, Kokkinakis teamed up with Nick Kyrgios in doubles, but they retired from the match.

Australian tennis legend Todd Woodbridge criticised Kokkinakis for playing lucrative exhibition events and jeopardising his body for the regular tennis season.

The 28-year-old hit back, saying: “We’re trying to make a living as much as he is. Unfortunately, ATP sometimes, if you make a semifinal of a 250 event, you don’t get as much as what you would playing an exhibition.”

Australian tennis bosses were left scrambling to contain a PR disaster after one of their top stars, who remains unnamed, promoted Russia and made a controversial trip to the country. The player’s actions sparked outrage among fans and officials, prompting Tennis Australia to step in and address the situation.

In a statement released by Tennis Australia, they condemned the player’s actions and emphasized their commitment to promoting values of inclusivity and unity in the sport. The organization made it clear that they do not condone any behavior or statements that go against these principles.

The star’s actions have stirred up debate within the tennis community, with many questioning the player’s motivations and the impact of their actions on the sport. Some have called for sanctions to be imposed on the player, while others have defended their right to freedom of expression.

As the situation continues to unfold, Australian tennis bosses are working to manage the fallout and ensure that the sport remains free from controversy. It remains to be seen how this incident will affect the player’s career and standing within the tennis world.

  • Top-ranked UCLA making most of 8-day East Coast trip on and off the court

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — UCLA is making the most of its eight-day road trip to the East Coast.

There have been a lot of firsts for the top-ranked Bruins on this eastern odyssey that will see the team play three games. It’s the longest road trip that coach Cori Close can remember during her time at the school — especially in the middle of the season.

It started with a victory over No. 25 Baylor in New Jersey in the inaugural Coretta Scott King Classic and then continued with a win over Big Ten foe Rutgers. The trip will conclude in Maryland against the eighth-ranked Terrapins.

In between the Baylor and Rutgers games, the Bruins got to spend time in New York exploring the city. A boat trip to the Statue of Liberty, a visit to the Empire State Building and 9/11 Museum as well as a stop on Broadway to see “Hell’s Kitchen” highlighted their day.

“It’s really cool because some of us had never been to a Broadway show before,” said center Lauren Betts, who averaged 24.5 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks in the two games in New Jersey. “And so I thought that was just a really cool experience. And we got to meet the cast after, which is like, amazing. … Some of us got on the stage and try to recreate the songs and sing, which obviously did not go so well.”

The Bruins also were in the area for the winter storm that brought snow to the tri-state area. For some of the players it was their first time seeing snow in person.

It’s not all fun for the Bruins, who are back in class as UCLA is on the quarter system. It hasn’t been a normal academic period with the wildfires in Los Angeles making classes remote.

“Obviously with the tragedy of the fires back home, a lot of the lectures moved to online learning so the whole quarter has not been consistent so far,” said Andrew Garcia, who is UCLA’s associate director of student athlete success for the team. “I think for me, the challenge has been, ‘How do I bring that sense of normalcy and consistency into their routine?’”

Garcia said he works with the players and professors to know when class work is due, which is a little more complicated with the time difference between the two coasts.

Junior guard Kiki Rice said she and others on the team speak with professors at the beginning of the year to let them know their schedule ahead of time.

“They’re well aware that, that we’re not able to make it because we’re on the road or we have a game,” she said. “But it’s still difficult just because UCLA is obviously a great school and we pride ourselves on being great students.”

Close sees this trip as well as the one the team took to Paris to start the season as educational experiences as well as basketball ones.

“We got to have education in 3D. I think that is really important for a lot of our players that went from something they have seen in movies and read in textbooks to I experienced it,” she said. “We went to the top of the Eiffel Tower. We did that earlier this year in Paris. And the Empire State Building is the second time I’ve done that. … I just think those are probably not going to be the things they talk about now, but my responsibility is to create experiences that they remember later that bridge the gap between education in the classroom.”

Close also said she asks the team for feedback since this is the first year the Bruins are in the coast-to-coast Big Ten Conference.

“We’ve already made some adjustments in our itinerary moving forward,” she said. “So, I just think that’s going to be the way it is all year long. We chose this and we want to be a part of the best conference. Doesn’t make it that it’s not really hard, but we’re going to have to make adjustments as we go.”

UCLA Men’s Basketball Team Making the Most of 8-Day East Coast Trip

The top-ranked UCLA men’s basketball team is taking full advantage of their 8-day East Coast road trip, both on and off the court. With a combination of intense practices, team bonding activities, and sightseeing, the Bruins are making the most of their time away from home.

On the court, UCLA has been dominating their opponents, showcasing their talent and teamwork with impressive wins against some tough East Coast competition. The team’s chemistry and communication have been on full display, with players stepping up and making big plays when it matters most.

Off the court, the Bruins have been exploring the sights and sounds of the East Coast, taking in the rich history and culture of the cities they visit. From visiting historical landmarks to trying out local cuisine, the team is immersing themselves in the experience and creating lasting memories together.

Overall, UCLA is proving that they are not only a force to be reckoned with on the court but also a tight-knit group that knows how to make the most of their time together. With their sights set on a national championship, the Bruins are making every moment count during their East Coast trip.

  • Harrison Ford and The Fonz Teamed Up In This Underrated Road Trip Comedy on Netflix

It is hard to overstate just how significant “The Fonz” was in American popular culture, as Henry Winkler’s beloved performance on the sitcom Happy Days became so successful that it eclipsed nearly every other character on the series. An issue that many actors who attain fame thanks to a role in an acclaimed television show face is being typecast; Winkler tried to break into the film industry to prove that Fonzie was not the only character that he was capable of playing. Winkler gave a surprisingly earnest performance as a Vietnam War veteran in the underrated road trip dramedy Heroes, which also featured a standout role from Harrison Ford in his first film released after the success of Star Wars.

    What Is ‘Heroes’ About?

Set in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, Heroes stars Winkler as the amnesiac veteran Jack Dunne, who is detained at a facility so that his mental health issues can be studied. Jack quickly finds that the doctors aren’t willing to listen to what he has to say about the trauma that he experienced overseas, and decides to break out on a mission to reach Northern California, where he intends to start a worm farm. Along the way, Jack ends up joining forces with Carol Bell (Sally Field), who is skeptical about her impending marriage. However, Jack’s real goal is to find the men from his unit that he served with, and ensure that they have all found a new trajectory in the aftermath of their shared trauma. Ford appears as Ken Boyd, a charismatic stick car driver who immediately agrees to help Jack and Carol identify the other “brothers in arms” that they have lost sight of.

The Gritty, Action-Packed, and Deeply Absurd Vietnam War Movie That Time Passed By

The Burt Lancaster-led movie had the misfortune of coming out the same year as ‘The Deer Hunter.’

The simplistic structure of Heroes allows the film to get deeper within the characters, as the notion of a “road trip adventure” has been a formula that has been used ever since the Golden Age of Hollywood. While the narrative itself may not provide all that many surprises, the opening is quite successful in showing the pressure that is put on Jack. Jack begins to understand that despite the best intentions of the medical professionals that are caring for him, staying in a facility where he is constantly reminded of the pain that was inflicted upon him isn’t going to help him heal. Although he has still not entirely recovered from the trauma of serving in Vietnam, Jack recognizes that finding a new goal will allow him to invest his intentions elsewhere. There was certainly a lot of pressure put on Winkler, as this was his first opportunity to show a more dramatic side of his abilities. Although he would later return to comedy thanks to a string of studio films in the 1980s, Heroes indicated that he has a real talent for more serious subject material; blending comedy and drama, as he does in Heroes, offered a preview of his career best performance in the HBO series Barry.

‘Heroes’ Was a Groundbreaking Depiction of PTSD

Heroes features impressive performances from a cast that recognized the serious nature of the material, but were still able to hit the comedic notes necessary to make the film so broadly appealing. Field’s role is surprisingly well-written, as Carol faces an issue shared by many women of her generation, as they often had to serve as nurturing figures to returning veterans that were deprived of meaningful experiences in their youth. Ford gives an early sign that he was equally talented at comedy as he was at drama, as Ken serves as the film’s greatest scene-stealer. Although his strange interest in racing adds a ton of laughs, it is heartwarming to see how quickly Ken responds to the idea of helping one of his former servicemen.

Heroes was different from many of the other post-Vietnam films that addressed veteran’s issues, as it was willing to paint them in a positive light. Although films like The Deer Hunter and Coming Home were powerful examinations of trauma, Heroes took note of the fact that enough men had served in the war that they deserved to see stories in which they got to become reacclimated to average life. Heroes may not have lit the box office on fire, but it was a charming adventure that was made all the more entertaining thanks to the terrific work from both Winkler and Ford.

Heroes is streaming on Netflix in the United States.

  • Blazers eye 3-0 road trip amid turnaround

Portland looks to extend its 48-19 all-time series lead against Charlotte.

Are the Trail Blazers showing a glimpse of what they can be in the future? The team’s overall record can make it easy to miss their recent high level of play.

A three-game winning streak isn’t enough to determine anything, but some signs are encouraging. The last two wins have come on the road, and the Trail Blazers have a shot at going perfect on their current road swing if they secure the win over the Hornets on Friday. A win over Charlotte would give the Blazers their longest winning streak of the season and could inject some much-needed confidence into this young roster that is finding its footing.

Speaking of youth, some of the long-term core pieces have been playing very well for the Blazers during the ongoing winning streak. Anfernee Simons deserves a mention, as he’s recorded 21 and 24 points, in the road wins over the Magic and Heat. Simons’ production has been volatile at times, but his offensive ability is beyond any doubt. He’s one of the more proven scoring weapons on the roster, and when he’s at his best, it opens doors for this Portland offense.

One player deserving more attention is Deni Avdija. Acquired on a trade with the Washington Wizards during the offseason, the five-year veteran had an adjustment period with his new team early, but he’s been turning things around of late. He’s averaging 16.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game across nine contests since the beginning of January. If he were to post those numbers over the course of a full season, they’d result in career-high marks in each of the four categories. Plus, it’s easy to forget that Avdija is only 24 years old. He’s making a case to be one of the long-term core pieces of this roster.

Scoot Henderson, the first-round pick of the 2023 NBA Draft, has shown improvement in his second season in the league. Henderson is averaging 14.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game since the start of January. If Henderson is able to sustain those numbers on a long-term basis, it will be yet another building block for this team going forward.

A three-game winning streak may not move the needle much in the standings. However, progress is progress and this year is about building for the future while competing in the present for the Blazers. Capping off a clean sweep on an East Coast road trip would be another step in the right direction for this young team.

The Portland Trail Blazers are on a roll, and they have their sights set on a perfect 3-0 road trip as they continue their impressive turnaround. After a slow start to the season, the Blazers have found their groove and are now playing some of their best basketball of the year.

Led by All-Star guard Damian Lillard, the Blazers have won five of their last six games and are looking to extend their winning streak on their current road trip. With victories over tough opponents like the Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks, the Blazers are proving that they can compete with the best teams in the league.

As they head into their final game of the road trip against the New Orleans Pelicans, the Blazers are focused on finishing strong and continuing their climb up the Western Conference standings. With Lillard leading the way and players like CJ McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic stepping up, the Blazers are a team to watch as they look to make a push for the playoffs.

With their eyes set on a 3-0 road trip, the Blazers are determined to keep their momentum going and show the rest of the league that they are a force to be reckoned with. Stay tuned to see if the Blazers can continue their winning ways and solidify their spot as a contender in the Western Conference.
