hi-fi dacVinicius Jr continues to be triggered by Rodri’s historic Ballon d’Or triumph in new interview
Vinicius Jr continues to be triggered by Rodri’s historic Ballon d’Or triumph in new interview Manchester City’s history-defining moment courtesy of Rodri at the Ballon d’Or ceremony late last year continues to feature in media reports weeks later.
The Spanish midfielder became the first defensive-minded central player to win the award since Germany’s Lothar Matthaus in 1990, as a justified reward for the exceptional contributions to both club and country over 2024.
Winning a fourth consecutive Premier League title with Manchester City off the back of a Player of the Tournament role at the FIFA Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia, Rodri travelled with Spain to Germany for the 2024 European Championships.
While Luis de la Fuente’s squad were not tipped as tournament favourites, their controlled way of playing defeated opposition from the likes of Italy, Germany, and France en route to the final in Berlin were they secured the trophy over Gareth Southgate’s England.
But while Rodri also won Player of the Tournament at the European Championships too alongside the competition triumph with his teammates and goal contributions in Germany, some were left strangely confused by his victory at the Ballon d’Or ceremony last Autumn.
Speaking after Real Madrid’s latest victory in European competition and after a starring performance from Vinicius Jr, the Brazilian winger himself appeared to remain affected by Rodri’s triumph over him in the chase for the Ballon d’Or.
“Individual awards are of course important, but… We can’t talk so much, it’s not the vote that people expected, but we have to continue,” Vinicius Jr told TNT Sports Brazil, as translated and relayed by Football Espana.
He continued, “Rodrygo, Kylian (Mbappe), Jude (Bellingham), to do great things.”
Vinicius Jr and the entire Real Madrid delegation opted to boycott the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris last year after they became aware of Rodri’s victory in the lead-up to the award being handed out in the French capital.
Those within the Santiago Bernabeu camp felt it was a certain success for their winger, despite his failure to contribute to anything of note for the Brazilian national team, unlike Rodri for his country over the course of last summer.
In a recent interview, Vinicius Jr opened up about his feelings towards Rodri’s historic Ballon d’Or triumph, admitting that he continues to be triggered by it. The young Brazilian winger has been vocal about his disappointment in not winning the prestigious award himself, and it seems that the sting of defeat still lingers.Vinicius Jr expressed his frustration with the outcome of the Ballon d’Or voting, stating that he felt he deserved the award more than Rodri. He pointed to his impressive performances throughout the season and his impact on the team as reasons why he should have been the winner.
Despite his disappointment, Vinicius Jr acknowledged that Rodri is a talented player and deserving of the accolade. However, he made it clear that he will use this snub as motivation to work even harder and prove his worth in the future.
It is clear that Vinicius Jr’s competitive spirit is still burning strong, and fans can expect to see even more determination and drive from the young star in the upcoming season. Only time will tell if he will be able to turn his frustration into success on the pitch.

(Tribe Athletics) HAMPTON — Senior Matteus Case scored six-straight points in the closing 1:07 to lift William & Mary to a 67-64 CAA road win at Hampton on Thursday night.
The Tribe (11-7, 5-0 CAA) led by as much as nine points in the second half, but trailed 62-60 with 1:31 remaining following a George Beale Jr. jumper. Cue Case who converted back-to-back old-fashion 3-point plays to propel the Green and Gold to its sixth-straight victory.
The 6-4 guard hit a floater in the lane with 1:07 left and was hit on the arm. After he completed the 3-point play to give W&M a one-point lead, the Green and Gold generated a turnover near midcourt. The ball ended up in the hands of Keller Boothby who found a cutting Case. The Pickering, Ontario native made the twisting lay-up and was fouled. His second 3-point play in 15 seconds extended the Tribe lead to 66-62 with 52 second left.
The Pirates (9-9, 2-4 CAA) had a chance to tie in the closing seconds, but Trevor Smith’s corner 3-point attempt at the horn was long, and the Tribe celebrated just the program’s fourth 5-0 CAA start.
Case led all scorers with 18 points off the bench. He was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor, including 6-of-7 from the free throw line. After missing the last seven games due to injury, junior Kyle Pulliam returned in the lineup with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 3-of-4 from 3, in 12 minutes off the bench. Senior Caleb Dorsey rounded out the double-digit scorers with a nice 10-point, five-rebound, and four-assist stat line.
As a team, W&M finished the game shooting 51.2% (22-of-43) from the floor, including a sizzling 75% (12-of-16) in the second half. The Tribe connected on 15-of-20 (75%) at the free throw line and was 8-of-20 (40%) from 3-point range.
Defensively, the Tribe limited Hampton to 37.5% (21-of-56) shooting, including just 6-of-23 (26.1%) from 3. The Pirates held a 32-29 advantage the glass, including 13 offensive rebounds. Hampton forced W&M into 16 turnovers, converting those into 18 points.
Hampton scored the game’s opening nine points. Beale Jr. scored four during the stretch, and a pair of Richard Goods free throws at the 16:35 mark gave the Pirates a 9-0 cushion.
The Pirates started 3-of-5 from the floor, but W&M turned up the defense, holding the Pirates to just 4-of-22 over the final 17 minutes of the first half.
W&M used a 17-2 run to take its first lead. An eight-point spurt, capped by a Pulliam 3-pointer, drew the Tribe within 18-17 at the 5:09 mark.
After a Xzavier Long lay-up briefly put the home side back on top by three, the Tribe connected on three-straight 3-pointers to open up a six-point advantage. Boothby tied the game at 20, before a Malachi Ndur left wing 3-pointer gave W&M a three-point lead at forced a Hampton timeout with 3:41 left in the half. Pulliam canned his second triple of the opening 20 minutes to stretch the margin to 26-20 just 27 seconds later.
W&M’s lead reached it largest at nine, 34-25, just over four minutes into the second half on an Isaiah Mbeng 3-pointer.
Hampton used a 5-0 run to close back within 34-30 on a Daniel Johnson jumper. The Tribe lead though jumped back to nine, 44-35, on a fastbreak and-1 from Case at the 12:31 mark.
The Pirates finally pulled even behind a 7-0 run sparked by Noah Farrakhan. He knocked down a 3-pointer, before his driving finger roll at the 4:45 mark tied the contest at 54.
Farrakhan, who led the Pirates with 15 points, gave the home team its first lead of the second half, 59-58, on another triple with 2:37 to play.
Smith added 12 points off the bench for Hampton, while Beale had 11. Long just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
Mbeng tallied seven points and a game-high five assists, while Ndur notched seven points on 3-of-4 shooting, including a 3-pointer.

The Tribe showed their resilience and determination as they fought hard for a 76-68 win on the road. The game was a true test of character for the Tribe as they faced a tough opponent in Hampton. However, the team’s strong defense and efficient offense proved to be the difference maker in this game. Corey Gauff: Serena’s AO 2010 triumph kick-started Coco’s tennis journey
“I was watching Serena actually win here, when Coco was five years old,” he recalled.
“Even in college, my teammates used to laugh that I’d get up at breakfast for Wimbledon, I’d get up in the middle of the night and watch the Australian Open, because I was still very much a tennis fan.
LISTEN: Corey Gauff on The Sit-Down
“And Serena won one year and I got excited; she was jumping around and we were excited and then I went out and bought her a tennis racquet.
“I thought that, you know, maybe she would be a good tennis player. I knew that she’d be a pretty good athlete, but just wasn’t sure what sport it would be.”
Fifteen years ago, Williams won a memorable three-set final over arch-rival Henin, their one and only meeting in a Grand Slam final.
It was the fifth of Serena’s seven Australian Open titles, and the first time she’d defended her crown at Melbourne Park.
“Then I went out and bought (Coco) a little Prince racquet and a little soft spongy ball,” Gauff continued, “and she started hitting against the garage and she just kinda stayed there, hitting them and hitting them.
“My mind started turning, like, maybe it’s a possibility.
“But we didn’t do much with it at (age) five. We kinda revisited the whole thing when she turned seven.”
Corey Gauff: Serena’s AO 2010 triumph kick-started Coco’s tennis journeyIn 2010, Serena Williams achieved a remarkable victory at the Australian Open, claiming her fifth title at the prestigious tournament. Little did she know that her triumph would have a lasting impact on the future of women’s tennis, particularly in the form of a young prodigy named Coco Gauff.
At the time, Coco was just six years old and had already shown a keen interest in tennis. Watching Serena dominate on the court inspired her to dream big and set her sights on reaching the same heights in the sport.
As Coco grew older, her passion for tennis only intensified, and she quickly made a name for herself as a rising star in the junior circuit. Her talent and determination caught the attention of many, including Serena herself, who took notice of the young phenom’s potential.
With Serena as her role model and inspiration, Coco continued to hone her skills and work tirelessly to achieve her goals. In 2019, she made headlines around the world by defeating Venus Williams in the first round of Wimbledon, becoming the youngest player to win a match at the tournament since 1991.
Since then, Coco has continued to impress with her performances on the court, showcasing a level of maturity and composure well beyond her years. Her journey in tennis has been nothing short of extraordinary, and it all began with Serena’s historic victory at the Australian Open in 2010.
As Coco continues to make waves in the tennis world, one thing is clear: Serena’s triumph at the Australian Open was not just a moment of glory for herself, but also a catalyst for the next generation of champions, with Coco Gauff leading the charge.

Bacca recalls Supercoppa triumph, previews Juve game and gives thoughts on Milan
Carlos Bacca was a part of the last AC Milan team that won the Supercoppa Italiana, funnily enough against Juventus over eight years ago.
The 2016 Supercoppa was played on 23 December 2016 at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Qatar. Juventus were the defending Serie A champions, and because they won the Coppa Italia too, Milan qualified as cup runners-up.
Juve were the favourites going into the game but the Rossoneri won 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra-time. It was Vincenzo Montella’s first and ultimately only trophy, and the last one until the 2021-22 Scudetto for the club.
Bacca did not score, but he remembers that victory on penalties well, brought about by Donnarumma’s brilliant save on Dybala and the decisive penalty scored by Pasalic. He spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport about that night and his old club in general.
Even though eight years have passed, you remember that night in Doha well…
“How could I? That is probably the best memory of my experience with AC Milan. We played a great match against a strong opponent and we managed to beat them showing great heart.”
In that team was Locatelli, who will be playing against Milan tonight…
“Manuel was young, but he was destined to become the great player he is now. He started training with us after the youth team because Brocchi had seen qualities in him.
“He made the most of his chances and now he is showing his value with Juve and the national team. He is one of the midfielders who make the difference in Italian football.”
Do you still hear from your team-mates from that side?
“I speak with Calabria with Donnarumma, Locatelli and Cutrone. They were great teammates and fantastic people. I wish Milan the best.”
What kind of match do you expect tonight?
“It’s tough because Motta’s team is tough and have not yet lost in the league. It will take a good performance, but I’m convinced that Milan can reach the final.”
Will you be in front of the TV too?
“If the training schedule with Atletico Junior de Barranquilla allows me… I always follow Milan and the Rossoneri have one more fan in Colombia.”
Are you disappointed with how this year has gone so far?
“If Milan don’t get results, it’s inevitable that the management will change coach. It’s part of the game… Conceiçao brings a new idea of football that we hope will be successful and will relaunch Milan in the race to qualify for the Champions League.
“The biggest club in Italy must always have the objective of fighting for the Scudetto and participating in the Champions League.”
Any regrets about how your AC Milan adventure ended?
“No. Inside me I only have the pride of having worn the shirt of one of the most important clubs in the world. I’m sure I gave my all. And that Supercoppa is a really nice memory.”
Bacca reflects on Supercoppa triumph and looks ahead to Juve clashAs AC Milan gears up for a crucial Serie A showdown against Juventus, star striker Carlos Bacca took a moment to reflect on his team’s recent Supercoppa Italiana triumph. The Rossoneri defeated Juventus in a dramatic penalty shootout to clinch the trophy, and Bacca played a key role in the victory, scoring a crucial goal in regulation time.
In a post-match interview, Bacca expressed his pride in the team’s performance and highlighted the importance of winning silverware. “It was a special moment for all of us to lift the Supercoppa trophy,” Bacca said. “It’s a testament to our hard work and dedication, and it gives us confidence going into the rest of the season.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming clash against Juventus in Serie A, Bacca emphasized the need for focus and determination. “Juventus are a tough team, but we have shown that we can compete with the best,” Bacca said. “We need to stay disciplined and execute our game plan to come out on top.”
When asked about Milan’s overall performance this season, Bacca remained optimistic despite some inconsistent results. “We have had our ups and downs, but I believe we have the quality and the mentality to achieve our goals,” Bacca said. “We just need to stay united and keep working hard to improve.”
As Bacca and his teammates prepare to face Juventus, fans will be hoping for another memorable performance from the Colombian striker. With his goal-scoring prowess and leadership on the field, Bacca will be instrumental in Milan’s quest for success in Serie A.
