  • What the West Is Learning About North Korean Troops Fighting for Russia

    • North Korean troops deployed to Russia have proven capable and fierce.
    • Russia is using them in high-cost “human wave” assaults.
    • The conflict is an opportunity for North Korea to learn modern warfare tactics and adapt.

North Korea’s soldiers are relentless, almost fanatical, in the face of death. They’re determined and capable in battle, even in an unfamiliar fight, and their tactics are outdated but brutal.

That’s what the West has learned watching Kim Jong Un’s army in action after Russian President Vladimir Putin turned to the North Korean leader to supply fighters for his war on Ukraine.

Pyongyang deployed 11,000 men to Kursk in November disguised as Russian soldiers and carrying fake IDs. These troops are largely special operations forces, meaning they are more ardent in their beliefs and better trained than other units.

Russia has been pushing the North Koreans headlong into bloody assaults. The costs are high, but Kim’s army is learning an important lesson in return: how to fight a modern war.

This war is North Korea’s largest military deployment to a foreign conflict in its almost 80-year history. To determine what the West is learning from this moment, Business Insider spoke to experts who have been closely following North Korea’s performance, examined publicly released intelligence, and reviewed Ukrainians’ observations.

Ukrainian and South Korean intelligence services have said that many of the troops that deployed to Russia are some of Pyongyang’s best, drawn from the 11th Corps, also known as the Storm Corps. The unit is trained in infiltration, infrastructure sabotage, and assassinations.

Ukraine’s top general, Oleksandr Syrsky, has said the North Korean troops are “highly motivated, well-trained,” and “brave.” And the Pentagon said this month that “these are relatively well-disciplined, competent forces” that are by all accounts “capable.”

Some Ukrainian soldiers have relayed their experiences to Western media, describing the troops as fast and nimble, good shots, and seemingly fearless as they rush into battle despite heavy losses. North Korean soldiers have also been found carrying diaries with written dedications to Kim and their country.

“They, as individuals, are more skilled as soldiers, more disciplined as soldiers, more willing to fight as soldiers than some sources had presumed when they were first being sent there,” said Joseph Bermudez, an expert on North Korea’s armed forces at the Center for International and Strategic Studies.

North Korea’s culture is driven by a martial philosophy that celebrates hard military power, and it maintains one of the world’s largest standing armies with around 1.2 million soldiers.

The country’s direct entry into the war has complicated the situation for the Ukrainians, particularly in Russia’s Kursk region where Ukraine is struggling to hold captured ground. Ukraine has lost roughly half of the territory it once held inside Russia, and the relentless human wave attacks and brutal assaults have worn down Ukraine’s already strained defenses, depriving Kyiv’s forces of time to rest and brace for further attacks.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said last month that North Korea may be planning to deploy additional forces and military equipment to Russia.

Pyongyang has denied sending troops to Russia, and Kyiv has said Russian and North Korean forces attempt to remove dead North Korean soldiers from the battlefield or even burn the faces of dead North Koreans to make them difficult to identify.

Russia has been sending the North Korean forces into very high-casualty front-line assaults. Biden’s White House said late last month that “it is clear that Russian and North Korean military leaders are treating these troops as expendable and ordering them on hopeless assaults against Ukrainian defenses.”

A White House spokesperson previously described the North Koreans as “highly indoctrinated, pushing attacks even when it is clear that those attacks are futile.”

The Trump administration did not respond to a request for comment on its assessment of North Korean forces fighting in Russia.

Ukraine’s Special Operation Forces said Friday the North Koreans fighting for Russia had not been seen in the Kursk area for around three weeks and had likely been withdrawn because of heavy combat losses. BI was unable to independently confirm these details.

On the front lines, Ukrainian soldiers have said that the North Koreans are a capable fighting force that is adept at neutralizing drones. The soldiers are ruthlessly tough and determined, relentlessly pushing forward in “human wave” assaults, using fellow soldiers as bait, and casting aside armor for faster infantry movements. And they refuse to surrender, often opting to kill themselves with a grenade or bullet rather than be captured.

This is a defining element of the North Korean special operations training: Soldiers are trained to follow orders aggressively, even if they suspect it will cost them their lives. If they disobey orders or fail without sacrifice, their families could suffer the consequences, Bermudez said.

North Korean forces have suffered heavy losses fighting for Russia, per Western intelligence. Despite training with Moscow on infantry tactics, flying drones, artillery, and trench-clearing operations, the troops are still new to this war.

The soldiers “have been observed engaging in light infantry operations of a Second World War vintage — one man draws out enemy fire (in this case, drones) to locate a target, and others attempt to neutralize said target,” said Michael Madden, a Stimson Center Korea expert. They have not prepared for a mechanized battlefield like Ukraine’s, filled with armored vehicles and tanks.

“They’ve been trained to fight a war on the Korean Peninsula,” Bermudez said, and while North Korea has watched various armed conflicts closely over the decades, its forces are now getting a real taste for it on a battlefield and in an environment they haven’t been prepping for.

In the short term, that could have devastating consequences for the North Korean forces fighting for the Russians. The Institute for the Study of War think tank has said that the entire 11,000-man contingent of North Korean forces could be killed or wounded in action by April if the current casualty rate continues. The latest estimates put losses at about 4,000.

Time will tell how North Korea implements what it’s learned from the Ukraine war.

North Korea may consider these sacrifices worth it — if not for the Russian cause, then for what it learns in return.

“It is a dark version of the concept of ‘you learn by doing,’” Madden said, while noting it’s still early. “We will need further incidents and engagements to make more sound observations as to whether they are adjusting their tactics given the state of play in Russia and Ukraine.”

But there’s no doubt they’re learning, acquiring knowledge critical for future conflicts that will make North Korea a more challenging combat force in East Asia. They’re seeing the Ukrainian use of US- and Western-provided weapons systems, such as HIMARS and Abrams, for example, and how the Russians have adapted to them.

“They’re bringing these lessons home in the hardest way possible: by bleeding for them,” Bermudez said.

As tensions continue to rise between Russia and Ukraine, a new and unexpected player has entered the battlefield: North Korean troops fighting for Russia. This revelation has left many in the West shocked and intrigued, as North Korea is typically known for its isolationist policies and secretive military.

Reports have emerged of North Korean soldiers being deployed to Ukraine to assist Russian forces in the ongoing conflict. While the exact number of troops involved is unknown, it is clear that North Korea is playing a role in the conflict that goes beyond mere diplomatic support.

This development has raised a number of questions in the West. How did North Korean troops end up fighting in Ukraine? What does this say about the relationship between North Korea and Russia? And perhaps most importantly, what does this mean for the future of the conflict in Ukraine?

As the situation continues to unfold, it is clear that the West has much to learn about the role of North Korean troops in the conflict. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Mexico agrees to deploy 10,000 troops to US border in exchange for tariff pause

Mexico has agreed to deploy 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in exchange for a one-month delay on President Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday.

Sheinbaum made the announcement on social media Monday morning, roughly 12 hours before the tariffs were set to take effect. Trump and Sheinbaum spoke on Monday and agreed that Mexico will do more to combat drug trafficking into the U.S., and that the U.S. will step up efforts to block the flow of firearms into Mexico.

Sheinbaum also said officials with the U.S. and Mexico were beginning talks on wider trade and security issues.

Trump confirmed the deal in his own post on Truth Social, describing the call with Sheinbaum as a “very friendly conversation.”

“I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country,” Trump wrote.

“We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a ‘deal’ between our two Countries,” he added.

The deal comes just days after Trump announced 25% tariffs on both Mexico and Canada, as well as 10% tariffs on China. Trump says he spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday, but the pair did not reach an agreement. He says they will speak again later Monday.

The tariffs are set to take effect at midnight on Tuesday.

During Sunday’s exchange with reporters, Trump also discussed the prospect of cutting off aid to South Africa after its president signed a controversial land seizure measure.

In a recent development, Mexico has agreed to deploy 10,000 troops to the US border in exchange for a pause on tariffs threatened by President Donald Trump. This agreement comes after weeks of tense negotiations between the two countries over the issue of immigration.

The decision to deploy troops to the border is aimed at curbing the flow of migrants crossing into the United States illegally. This move is seen as a significant step towards addressing the issue of illegal immigration, which has been a major point of contention between the two countries.

President Trump had threatened to impose escalating tariffs on Mexican goods if the country did not take action to curb the flow of migrants. However, with this new agreement, the tariffs have been put on hold, providing some relief to both countries.

The deployment of troops to the border is expected to begin immediately and will continue until the issue of illegal immigration is brought under control. This move is seen as a positive step towards addressing a complex and contentious issue that has strained relations between the US and Mexico.

Overall, this agreement represents a significant development in the ongoing efforts to address the issue of illegal immigration and demonstrates the importance of diplomacy and cooperation between nations.

President Donald Trump on Monday said that he will pause for one month his new 25% tariff on goods entering the United States from Mexico after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to immediately send 10,000 soldiers to her country’s northern border to prevent drug trafficking.

The announcement of the pause came two days after Trump slapped 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, as well as a 10% tariff on goods imported from China.

Trump said in a social media post that he and Sheinbaum spoke Monday morning.

“We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico,” Trump wrote in the post.

“I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a ‘deal’ between our two Countries,” Trump wrote.

Sheinbaum had first disclosed the pause in a post on the X social media site.

“We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty; we reached a series of agreements,” Sheinbaum wrote in the tweet, according to a translation from Spanish.

She also wrote, “The United States is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico.”

This is breaking news. Please refresh for updates.

In a recent turn of events, President Trump has decided to pause his plan to impose tariffs on Mexico after reaching an agreement on border security. The tariffs, which were set to go into effect on Monday, have been postponed for at least 90 days as both countries work towards finding a solution to the immigration crisis.

This decision comes after Mexico agreed to deploy thousands of National Guard troops to their southern border in an effort to curb the flow of migrants heading towards the United States. The two countries will also continue discussions on other measures to address the issue, including potential changes to asylum laws and increased cooperation on regional economic development.

While some critics have questioned the effectiveness of using tariffs as a leverage tool in international negotiations, others see this as a positive development in the ongoing efforts to secure the border and address the immigration challenges facing both countries.

As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this temporary truce will impact the broader relationship between the United States and Mexico. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Ukraine says N Korea troops may have quit front line after heavy losses

Ukrainian special forces fighting in Russia’s western Kursk region have told the BBC they have not seen any North Korean troops there for the past three weeks.

A spokesman said it was likely they had pulled out after suffering heavy losses.

Last week, Western officials told the BBC that, out of some 11,000 troops sent from North Korea to fight for Russia, 1,000 had been killed in just three months.

North Korea and Russia have not commented.

On Friday, the Ukrainian special forces spokesman told the BBC he was only referring to areas in the Kursk region where his forces were fighting.

The spokesman did not say how long that front line was.

And while this is not the full picture, it does suggest significant North Korean casualties.

Separately, the New York Times also reported that the North Koreans had been pulled off the front lines.

The newspaper quoted US officials as saying the withdrawal may not be a permanent one, and the soldiers could return after receiving additional training or after the Russians come up with new ways of deploying them to avoid such heavy casualties.

Reports attributed to South Korean intelligence say the North Koreans are unprepared for the realities of modern warfare, and are especially vulnerable to being targeted by Ukrainian drones.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un have in recent months deepened bilateral ties, signing a security and defence treaty.

Pyongyang’s assistance to Moscow now also extends to large amounts of ammunition and weapons.

Last August, elite Ukrainian troops launched a lightning offensive in Kursk, seizing more than 1,000 sq km (386 sq miles) of Russian territory.

Since then, Russian forces have managed to retake a sizeable chunk of that region.

Kyiv’s surprise incursion was aimed at changing the dynamics of the war.

It was initially hoped the operation would relieve pressure on other parts of the more than 1,000km-long (620 miles) frontline, particularly in eastern Ukraine.

Moscow is continuing its relentless – albeit slow – advance in the east, seizing a number of settlements in the Donetsk region in recent weeks.

Now Kyiv is looking to hold on to the land it occupies in Kursk as leverage for any possible ceasefire or peace negotiations with Moscow.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Ukraine’s defense ministry has reported that North Korean troops may have withdrawn from the front line after suffering heavy losses in recent clashes. The ministry stated that the North Korean soldiers had faced fierce resistance from Ukrainian forces, resulting in significant casualties on their side.

While there has been no official confirmation of the North Korean troop withdrawal, Ukraine’s defense ministry expressed optimism that the recent setbacks may have forced them to reconsider their strategy. The ministry emphasized that Ukrainian forces remain vigilant and prepared to defend their territory against any further incursions.

The news of a possible North Korean retreat comes as a welcome development for Ukraine, which has been locked in a tense standoff with the reclusive regime for months. However, the situation remains fluid, and Ukrainian officials are urging caution until more concrete information is available.

As tensions continue to simmer in the region, the international community is closely monitoring the situation and calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The withdrawal of North Korean troops, if confirmed, could be a significant step towards de-escalating the crisis and preventing further bloodshed.

  • North Korean troops pulled back from frontline after heavy losses, Ukrainian officials say

    Kyiv, Ukraine
    CNN
     —

North Korean troops have not been seen on the frontlines in Russia’s Kursk region for several weeks, a Ukrainian military official said Friday, amid reports of mass casualties among Pyongyang’s forces.

“The presence of DPRK troops has not been observed for about three weeks, and they were probably forced to withdraw after suffering heavy losses,” a spokesperson for the Ukrainian military’s Special Operations Forces, Colonel Oleksandr Kindratenko, told CNN.

It follows reports that some North Korean units have been pulled back from the frontlines after significant losses, according to Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak.

About 12,000 North Korean soldiers have been sent to Russia, according to Ukrainian officials and Western intelligence reports, which say around 4,000 those troops have been killed or injured.

North Korean troops have been deployed to Kursk since at least November to repel Ukraine’s incursion in the southern Russian border region.

“We are still in the Kursk region… the Russian forces were not enough to push us out,” Ukrainian President Zelensky said last week at a speech in Davos, Switzerland. Zelensky noted that there were 60,000 Russian troops in Kursk and 12,000 North Koreans.

Zelensky also said that one-third of those North Korean troops had been killed.

CNN has previously reported on the brutal and near-suicidal tactics of North Korean soldiers, who in some cases have detonated grenades rather than be captured by Ukrainian forces and have written pledges of allegiance on the battlefield to North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un.

A commander with the 6th Special Operations Forces regiment, who did not want to give his name for security reasons, told CNN that while the North Korean soldiers are “all young, trained, hardy fighters,” they would have not previously faced drones in combat. “They are prepared for the realities of war in 1980 at best,” he said.

Another battalion serviceman told CNN the North Koreans had shown good marksmanship when shooting down drones from about a 100-meter distance, suggesting a high level of training in North Korea.

However, Russia appears to be using the troops as foot soldiers, using them to carry out mass ground assaults despite major losses in Kursk.

Ukraine has recently made advancements in Kursk, according to a battlefield update from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a DC-based think-tank, on January 26. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry said earlier this week that Russian forces recaptured the Kursk region village of Nikolayevo-Daryino, which lies on the Russia-Ukraine border.

A photo shows a cell where an alleged North Korean soldier held after being captured by the Ukrainian army on January 11, 2025. Earlier this month, Ukraine captured two North Korean soldiers in Kursk.
The cover from a first aid manual titled

Neither Moscow nor Pyongyang have officially acknowledged the presence of North Korean troops in Russia.

Last year, months before the deployment of North Koreans to Russia, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin signed a landmark defense pact and pledged to use all available means to provide immediate military assistance in the event the other is attacked.

The pact is the most significant agreement signed by Russia and North Korea in decades and has been viewed as something of a revival of their 1961 Cold War-era mutual defense pledge.

CNN’s Nick Paton Walsh, Rebecca Wright, Daria Tarasova-Markina, Brice Laine and Helen Regan contributed to this report.

In a recent announcement, Ukrainian officials revealed that North Korean troops have been forced to pull back from the frontline after sustaining heavy losses in recent clashes. The conflict, which has been ongoing for several weeks, has reportedly resulted in significant casualties on both sides.

The withdrawal of North Korean troops from the frontline is seen as a significant development in the conflict, with Ukrainian forces now gaining ground in the region. However, officials caution that the situation remains fluid and that further fighting is likely to occur in the coming days.

The international community has been closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine, with fears of a wider conflict breaking out in the region. Diplomatic efforts are underway to try and de-escalate the situation and prevent further bloodshed.

As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the conflict will play out and what the repercussions will be for both Ukraine and North Korea. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Match Preview: Tullberg’s Troops to Host Shakhtar Donetsk at Home

Barely have we recovered from BVB’s most recent implosion against Werder Bremen before it’s once again time to sit ourselves in front of the screen for another 90 minutes of exciting attacking football. Gregor Kobel mentioned in the press conference for this game, that the squad needs a success. While it seem kinda obvious, it’s true nonetheless. This team really need to win some football matches and convince themselves that they’re good enough to be one of Germany’s and Europe’s biggest teams. Tomorrow they’re facing a team that has a lot of experience in the Champions League, namely Shakhtar Donetsk from Ukraine. Although Shakhtar is a well known name around the European continent, they haven’t exactly been at their best in recent years. Currently they’re sitting 3rd in the Ukrainian division with 10 full points behind Dynamo Kiev in 1st.

If you need a good reason to watch this game, just know that Shakhtar have been playing at the Veltins Arena in Germany as their makeshift stadium because of… You know. That should be reason enough to get some people in here fired up!

    Player to Watch: Salih Özcan?

We all know that I know absolutely nothing about the current Shakhtar Donetsk squad. Instead, I want to focus on Dortmund’s first and probably also last “transfer” of this winter window (Kehl, what the f*ck is happening?). Good ol’ Salih Özcan has returned from the Wolfsburg bench, and honestly, I think it’s a fine move that suits all parties. With Nmecha out injured, Dortmund are in desperate need of someone who can occupy the number six position. And while Özcan never really delivered in black and yellow, he was still a fine servant, although with some fluctuations in terms of his performances. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Özcan thrown right into the mix tomorrow. He know the team, and he knows the position. Let’s make the best of it.

    Predicted Starting XI

Süle is out and Nmecha is out. That about does it for the absences. Tullberg has plethora of different options to choose from tomorrow, and we can’t really know who he favors until the starting XI is officially out. I don’t expect too much to change, which is also reflected in my prediction below.

    Source: https://www.buildlineup.com/

Honestly, at this point, it’s anybody’s game at Borussia Dortmund. Players like Reyna and Duranville have even been on trial in the starting XI in recent weeks, but all logic tells me that Tullberg won’t take too many chances, as the team are in desperate need of a win.

    Score Prediction

I think that Dortmund played a fine game against Bremen on the weekend—and that was with ten men on the field. It’s really hard to say how much of the success can be attributed to Mike Tullberg working with the squad for 3 days, but at least there was something. Are my hopes high? Absolutely not. Do I think we will win? Yeah, kinda.

Match Preview: Tullberg’s Troops to Host Shakhtar Donetsk at Home

Excitement is building as Tullberg’s Troops prepare to host Shakhtar Donetsk at their home ground in what promises to be an intense and thrilling match. Both teams have been in impressive form in recent weeks, making this a highly anticipated showdown.

Tullberg’s Troops have been on a winning streak, with their attacking prowess and solid defense proving to be a formidable combination. Led by their star striker, the team has been scoring goals for fun and will be looking to continue their winning ways against Shakhtar Donetsk.

On the other hand, Shakhtar Donetsk is a team known for their technical ability and quick counterattacks. They will be looking to exploit any weaknesses in the Tullberg’s Troops defense and secure a crucial away victory.

With both teams in top form, this match promises to be a thrilling and closely contested affair. Fans can expect end-to-end action, skillful play, and plenty of goals as these two teams battle it out for supremacy on the field.

So, mark your calendars and make sure to tune in to see Tullberg’s Troops take on Shakhtar Donetsk in what is sure to be a match to remember. Let the games begin!

  • Russia says its troops have captured a strategic town in eastern Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia on Sunday claimed its troops had captured a strategically important town in eastern Ukraine as part of a grinding campaign to weaken Kyiv’s grip on the country’s industrial heartland, while uncertainty over the continued flow of U.S. funding has reportedly halted the work of some Ukrainian NGOs, including those helping war veterans.

Russia’s Defense Ministry announced the fall of Velyka Novosilka, which had around 5,000 residents before the war, following a monthslong battle. Its statement could not be independently verified, and Ukraine claimed its troops had only strategically withdrawn from certain areas.

But if confirmed, it would make Velyka Novosilka the first significant town to capitulate in 2025 under Moscow’s onslaught in the eastern Donetsk region against Ukraine’s weary and short-handed army. The war is set to reach its three-year milestone in February.

Ukrainian forces withdrew from certain parts of Velyka Novosilka to avoid encirclement, the 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade said in a statement on its official Telegram channel Sunday. The brigade is active in that patch of the frontline.

Analysts have long predicted that it’s only a matter of time until Russian forces capture the settlement, which lies only 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the neighboring Dnipropetrovsk region.

The brigade said though they have approximate parity with Russian forces in terms of artillery and drones, the Russians have a huge advantage in manpower.

“Our units, using the weather conditions, skillfully withdrew from areas where there was a threat of encirclement. This does not mean that we have completely left the city, the fighting in Velyka Novosilka continues . All actions are aimed at minimizing our own losses and maximum damage to the enemy,” the statement said.

The brigade said the withdrawal will make it topographically difficult for Russians to advance by making the river an obstacle for further advance.

“The enemy (…) will have no peace, any movement is cut off by shells and drones,” the statement said.

Russia captured the Donetsk cities of Avdiivka and Vuhledar last year after long and grueling battles. Those cities were largely leveled by Russian artillery, glide bombs and drones before they fell.

Russian forces have also been trying for months to capture the key Donetsk strongholds of Pokrovsk and Chasiv Yar.

Elsewhere, Ukrainian NGOs catering to the needs of war veterans and their families have claimed a suspension of U.S. funding is forcing them to halt their work, days after newly sworn in U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced he would pause foreign aid grants for 90 days.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later claimed that military aid to Ukraine would continue, but did not clarify whether humanitarian aid had been paused. Kyiv relies on the U.S. for 40% of its military needs.

According to news reports, Ukrainian NGOs receiving funding from Washington this weekend began receiving “stop work” orders, requiring them to pause all projects and related travel.

Veteran Hub, an NGO that provides legal and psychological support to war veterans and their families, was forced to halt operations of two of its three largest service units as a result, the organization said in its official Facebook page.

It said the suspension has lead it to ask for public donations for the first time.

“Since 2018, we have refrained from public fundraising because we believe that donations are primarily needed for the military. Today, we are forced to publicly ask for support for the first time,” the organization said.

With the Trump administration questioning the future of U.S. aid to Ukraine, stressing the need to quickly broker a peace deal, both Moscow and Kyiv are seeking battlefield successes to strengthen their negotiating positions ahead of any prospective talks.

For the past year, Russian forces have been waging an intense campaign to punch holes in Ukraine’s defenses in the eastern Donetsk region. The sustained and costly offensive has compelled Kyiv to give up a series of towns, villages and hamlets.

In a recent development, Russia has announced that its troops have successfully captured a strategic town in eastern Ukraine. This move is a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two countries and has raised concerns about the potential for further violence and instability in the region.

The town, which has not been named by Russian officials, is said to be of great strategic importance due to its location and resources. The capture of this town is likely to give Russian forces a significant advantage in their military operations in eastern Ukraine.

The Ukrainian government has condemned Russia’s actions and has called for international support to help defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The United States and other Western countries have also expressed their concerns and have called for Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory.

The situation in eastern Ukraine remains fluid and unpredictable, and there is a growing fear that the conflict could escalate into a full-scale war. The international community must act swiftly to de-escalate the situation and prevent further bloodshed in the region.

  • Pete Hegseth Gives US Troops New Marching Orders Hours After Confirmation

Pete Hegseth ordered America’s troops to “put America first” and “never back down” in a “message to the force” hours after his razor-thin confirmation as Defense Secretary.

In a press release published by the Pentagon on Saturday after his swearing-in ceremony, Hegseth wrote, “The President gave us a clear mission: achieve Peace through Strength. We will do this in three ways—by restoring the warrior ethos, rebuilding our military, and reestablishing deterrence.”

“We are American warriors,” he continued. “We will defend our country. Our standards will be high, uncompromising, and clear. The strength of our military is our unity and our shared purpose.”

“All of this will be done with a focus on lethality, meritocracy, accountability, standards, and readiness,” the former Fox News host and veteran added.

Hegseth, 44, who was among President Donald Trump’s most controversial Cabinet picks, on Friday eked out a successful Senate confirmation by a single tie-breaking vote, cast by Vice President JD Vance.

In addition to questions about whether he had the necessary experience for the position, Hegseth faced blowback over his history of infidelity, an allegation of sexual assault (which he has denied), multiple allegations addressing past struggles with alcohol (which he has also denied), and his past opposition to women in combat roles.

During the confirmation process, Hegseth repeatedly dismissed the slew of news stories that raised questions about his character—including an email reported by The New York Times in which Hegseth’s own mother accused him of abusing “many” women—as a media “smear campaign.”

He also walked back his past criticism of women in the military, saying that “every service member, regardless of gender, who can meet objective occupational and readiness standards for a career field should have the opportunity to compete for jobs in that field.”

As Secretary of Defense, Hegseth will be responsible for overseeing the third-largest and best-funded military in the world.

Just hours after his confirmation as Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth wasted no time in giving US troops new marching orders. In a rousing speech to military personnel, Hegseth emphasized the importance of readiness, discipline, and unwavering dedication to the mission.

“We are facing unprecedented challenges in today’s world, and it is imperative that we are prepared to meet them head-on,” Hegseth declared. “Our enemies will not wait for us to be ready, so we must always be vigilant and ready to act at a moment’s notice.”

Hegseth’s tough talk and no-nonsense approach were met with enthusiastic applause from the troops, who are no doubt eager to follow their new leader into battle. The confirmation of Hegseth as Secretary of Defense has been met with mixed reactions, but his decisive leadership style and commitment to the military are sure to win over even the most skeptical critics.

As the sun sets on another day, US troops stand ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead, knowing that they have a strong and fearless leader in Pete Hegseth. With his new marching orders ringing in their ears, they march forward with confidence and determination, ready to defend their country and uphold the values that make America great.

  • Active-duty troops begin arriving at US-Mexico border in Texas and California

Military troops began arriving in El Paso, Texas, and San Diego, California, on Thursday evening following President Donald Trump’s decision to declare a national emergency at the southern border.

The additional support of 1,500 active-duty troops consists of 1,000 U.S. Army personnel and 500 Marines from Camp Pendleton in California who will get their assignments along the border upon arrival.

“This represents a 60% increase in active-duty ground forces since President Trump was sworn-in Monday,” Acting Defense Secretary Robert Salesses said in a statement late Wednesday.

There are already 2,500 U.S. service members stationed at the southern border.

The troops were ordered there in May 2023 during the Biden administration under Title 10 authorities approved by former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and are planned to be there until the end of Fiscal Year 2025, according to a U.S. Northern Command spokesperson.

The National Guard is also increasing its support and coordinating emergent requirements with USNORTHCOM and U.S. Transportation Command for additional personnel, military airlift, barrier construction and other capabilities to meet presidential and Secretary of Defense directives, according to a statement from the National Guard Bureau of Public Affairs.

“The National Guard currently has over 1,600 Guardsmen supporting the federal border security mission,” said Gen. Steven S. Nordhaus, chief of the National Guard Bureau. “In conjunction with our Joint Service partners, we are developing additional support options to meet USNORTHCOM, USTRANSCOM and Department of Homeland Security force requirements as this critical mission evolves.”

Additionally, more than 4,100 Texas National Guard personnel remain on duty at the border supporting ongoing Operation Lone Star efforts.

Some of the troops being deployed to the southern border were on call or actively working in support of the California wildfires, though they were released from that mission and are now being reassigned, the senior official added.

Fox News Digital’s Liz Friden, Stephen Sorace, Jennifer Griffin and Greg Wehner contributed to this report.

The Department of Defense has announced that active-duty troops have begun arriving at the US-Mexico border in Texas and California as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to secure the southern border. This deployment comes in response to President Trump’s order to send thousands of troops to bolster border security and assist Border Patrol agents in addressing the influx of migrants seeking asylum.

The troops, which include engineers, military police, and medical personnel, will provide logistical support, surveillance, and other assistance to Border Patrol agents. This deployment marks a significant escalation of the administration’s immigration enforcement efforts and has raised concerns about the militarization of the border.

Critics argue that the deployment of active-duty troops is unnecessary and could further strain the strained relationship between the US and Mexico. They also question the legality of using the military for domestic law enforcement purposes.

Despite the controversy surrounding this deployment, the Trump administration has defended its decision, stating that it is necessary to address the security and humanitarian crisis at the border. The arrival of active-duty troops marks a new chapter in the ongoing debate over immigration and border security in the United States.

  • Trump administration weighs sending 10,000 troops to border, using bases to hold migrants

Washington — Trump administration officials are considering deploying as many as 10,000 soldiers to the U.S.-Mexico border and using Department of Defense bases to hold migrants awaiting deportation as they plan their dramatic crackdown on illegal immigration, according to an internal government memo obtained by CBS News.

In an executive action Mr. Trump signed upon taking office on Monday, he declared a national emergency along the southern border and ordered the Defense Department to provide troops and resources “to support the activities of the Secretary of Homeland Security in obtaining complete operational control” of the border. He also instructed the military to help build border barriers to repel migrants.

On Wednesday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that the president had signed another executive order to deploy 1,500 troops to the southern border, where 2,500 soldiers are already stationed under federal orders. Texas and other states have also deployed National Guard soldiers to the border in recent years, including to fortify it with razor wire.

But the internal Customs and Border Protection memo dated Jan. 21 indicates there’s a plan to dispatch “~10,000 soldiers” to help the agency’s mission at the southern border. The Trump administration, according to the document, has submitted an “[u]nrestrained request” for the Pentagon to surge resources and personnel to assist CBP with technology and infrastructure.

The memo also says the Defense Department “may” convert its bases into “holding facilities,” presumably to help CBP detain migrants who crossed into the U.S. illegally.

Additionally, the memo shows the Trump administration is planning to dramatically expand detention capacity at Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is expected to be at the center of Mr. Trump’s promised mass deportations.

According to the document, ICE officials want 14 new detention facilities with the capacity to hold up to 1,000 migrants each and another four able to accommodate as many as 10,000 immigrant detainees each.

During a briefing with reporters, a senior U.S. military official said the 1,500-troop deployment would involve dispatching 1,000 Army personnel and 500 Marines, as well as helicopters, to the California and Texas border. The official said the troops would not engage in law enforcement, as federal law generally prohibits the use of the military for civilian law enforcement. Instead, the official said they would be tasked with helping CBP and erecting border barriers, to curtail illegal crossings.

The Department of Defense also announced it would “provide military airlift to support” deportation flights for more than 5,000 migrants detained along the U.S.-Mexico border by CBP. Officials said the Department of Homeland Security would offer in-flight law enforcement.

Mr. Trump’s plans to greatly expand the role of the U.S. military in border enforcement — historically limited to operational and administrative duties — is part of a larger campaign to seal U.S. borders to migrants and asylum-seekers.

The Trump administration has also directed U.S. immigration agents along the borders with Mexico and Canada to swiftly and summarily deport migrants crossing into the country illegally, denying them the opportunity to request asylum, according to CBP officials and internal documents.

Those directions are being implemented in accordance with an unprecedented order issued by Mr. Trump that suspended the entry of unauthorized migrants into the country, based on the argument they are “invading” the U.S. and threatening public health and national security.

Mr. Trump said he was allowed to take the drastic step through powers in the U.S. Constitution and a law known as 212(f) that empowers presidents to bar the entry of foreigners whose arrival is deemed to be “detrimental” to U.S. interests.

While Mr. Trump made immigration a top issue in the campaign, his administration inherited a relatively calm southern border, with illegal crossings there at a four-year low. Unlawful crossings into the U.S. plunged in 2024 from the record highs in the previous three years due to a Mexican crackdown on migrants. They fell further after the Biden administration enacted restrictions on asylum last June.

    contributed to this report.

The Trump administration is considering deploying up to 10,000 troops to the border in an effort to address the influx of migrants seeking asylum in the United States. The proposal includes using military bases to hold migrants while their asylum claims are processed.

This controversial move has sparked debate among lawmakers and immigration advocates, with some expressing concerns about the militarization of the border and the treatment of migrants. Critics argue that using military bases to detain migrants could violate their rights and lead to overcrowding and poor living conditions.

Supporters of the plan argue that the deployment of troops is necessary to secure the border and prevent illegal immigration. They believe that utilizing military bases to hold migrants will help alleviate the strain on existing detention facilities and improve the efficiency of processing asylum claims.

As the Trump administration weighs this decision, the debate over immigration policy continues to divide the nation. Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation.
