  • U-19 World Cup – Ecstasy for Indian teens who want to create ‘legacy of winning ICC trophies’

“Coming at the start of the tournament, I think I mentioned one thing that we are here to dominate, we are here to make sure that India stays on top.”

Those were the words of India captain Niki Prasad after she led India to a second consecutive Women’s Under-19 World Cup title in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. And dominate is what India did throughout the tournament, winning all their games and not letting any team score more against them than the 113 for 8 that England made in the semi-finals.

India had chased in four of the six games before the final, and they won all those matches comfortably, never losing more than two wickets. After South Africa won the toss and chose to bat in the title bout, India just replicated the template that served them so well through the competition, their spinners playing a pivotal role in getting the opposition out for 82.

India then chased down the target in 11.2 overs, with G Trisha – who also returned figures of 3 for 15 with the ball – scoring an unbeaten 44.

“We are definitely going to create this legacy of winning ICC trophies, winning a lot of trophies for India,” Prasad said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Prasad had to put behind her the disappointment of not making the squad for the previous Under-19 World Cup, which India won under the captaincy of Shafali Verma in 2023, but she’s soaking it all in now.

“I think I’m feeling really happy that I am right here standing, making sure that India stays on top. And it’s obviously a special moment that we’re playing the World Cup and doing this for India,” she said.

India lost the toss and were asked to bowl. Prasad said India drew from their experience bowling first in most of their matches in the competition.

“I think all of us just tried to stay calm and down-to-earth and just stick to doing what our job is,” she said.

“I think if we would have won the toss we would have definitely chosen batting but you know throughout the tournament we’ve been bowling well and we’ve been bowling first [more] so nevertheless we just wanted to go out there and show what we can do.”

Trisha, who was named Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament, dedicated the latter award to her father, who was in the audience.

“Because of him I started playing cricket. I don’t think without him I would have been here,” said Trisha, who was also part of the team in 2023.

While she played in the middle order in 2023, Trisha was pushed up to open this time around, and she ended up topping the run charts with 309 runs from seven matches with an average of 77.25. No other batter reached the 200-run mark. Her strike rate of 147.14 was also the best in the tournament.

Trisha, who said she idolises Mithali Raj, has been working on her power game in recent times and credited India’s batting coach Apoorva S Desaii for giving her role clarity before the competition.

“So we’ve been working on [my power game] since a while. For this tournament our batting coach Apoorva sir he has kept telling ‘you are going to open the innings and make sure you’re ready for it’,” Trisha said.

Apart from her heroics with the bat, Trisha also returned seven wickets from the six games she bowled in.

    India’s left-arm spin trio ‘like a family’

While Vaishnavi topped the charts with 17 strikes, Shukla and Sisodia were not far behind with 14 and 10 wickets respectively.

According to them, the three are close and have developed a great understanding between themselves.

“I guess back in the room in the hotel, what all three we talk about is nothing related to our bowling,” Sisodia said after India’s win. “All our bowling just came and, you know, in the game coming on we just enjoyed ourselves.

“We keep telling each other a little bit of, you know, what the batters are doing, helping each other [on the field].

“At this point, I guess, we are just, you know, eye contacting and we are understanding each other now.”

With all of them being left-arm spinners, is there competition or does this fact not affect them?

“We are like the best friends,” Sisodia was quick to respond, with emphasis on the “best”. Vaishnavi, who was too overcome with emotion to speak a few minutes earlier was quick to interject: “We are like family actually. We all are family.”

Asked about their plans for the future, Sisodia said: “I guess all of us… I mean, not just us [three] but the whole team, we all want to just go ahead and, you know, never look back from here.”

Wicketkeeper and opener G Kamalini, who was animatedly photobombing the interview, then came in and summed up the feelings of the team in a line in Tamil: “World Cup-pa thookittom [We have lifted the World Cup].”

The U-19 World Cup has always been a platform for young cricketers to showcase their talent and make a mark on the international stage. For Indian teens, it is more than just a tournament – it is an opportunity to create a legacy of winning ICC trophies.

The Indian U-19 team has a rich history of success in the tournament, having won it four times in the past. The likes of Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, and Mohammad Kaif have all made their mark in the U-19 World Cup before going on to have successful careers in the senior team.

For the current crop of Indian teens, winning the U-19 World Cup is not just about the trophy itself, but about setting a precedent for future generations. They want to create a legacy of winning ICC trophies and continue the tradition of producing world-class cricketers.

The ecstasy of winning the U-19 World Cup is unparalleled for these young cricketers, as it not only brings them personal glory but also puts them on the radar of selectors for the senior team. It is a stepping stone towards fulfilling their dreams of representing India at the highest level.

As the Indian U-19 team gears up for the upcoming World Cup, the excitement and anticipation among the players and fans are palpable. They are determined to make their mark on the world stage and create a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.

  • Pam Shriver’s Grand Slam trophies stolen during L.A. wildfire evacuation

Shortly after Pam Shriver woke up Thursday at the Marina del Rey DoubleTree, where she has been staying the past week since fleeing the Pacific Palisades fire in Los Angeles, she realized her son’s car, containing her collection of Grand Slam trophies, had been stolen.

Shriver spent the day trying to deal with that unfortunate event while sending messages to Donna Vekic, the top Croatian tennis player she helps coach. Vekic, the No. 18 seed at the Australian Open, was preparing for her third-round match in Melbourne, 7,000 miles away.

By Thursday evening she was attending a virtual school board meeting on one screen while watching and intermittently praying during Vekic’s three-set nail-biter against No. 12 seed Diana Shnaider.

Someone might have been listening. Vekic prevailed 7-6(4), 6-7(3), 7-5. In the meantime, one of Shriver’s sons called to let her know that she had packed her five Wimbledon doubles trophies in a racket bag that had ended up in a different car to her son George’s Dodge Durango, which was stolen.

The Los Angeles Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“It’s so crazy,” she said, in a phone interview from Los Angeles after Vekic’s match. “I’m not religious but I felt like I needed one.”

Shriver said she’d lost track of where her family had packed away the belongings they gathered as the fires crept closer to the peak of Mandeville Canyon, about a mile from her home. The car that was stolen held 11 trophies from the U.S. French and Australian Opens, but not those five from Wimbledon.

Shriver, 62, stayed behind in Los Angeles as Vekic traveled to Melbourne after arranging accommodation for her support staff, friends and pets at the Marina del Rey hotel.

Vekic, who reached last year’s Wimbledon semifinal with Shriver in her box, drew a heart symbol and wrote “LA” on a camera lens after her first-round win at the Australian Open.

“It’s a very difficult situation for her. She’s home in L.A. Her house is OK for now, but so many have lost everything, and it’s a horrible situation,” Vekic said of Shriver in her news conference.

Shriver won 22 Grand Slam doubles titles in total, 21 in women’s doubles and one in mixed doubles. She and partner Martina Navratilova are the only women’s doubles pair to win all four majors in a calendar year, and Shriver won Olympic gold in women’s doubles for the U.S. at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, partnering Zina Garrison.

Today, tennis legend Pam Shriver faced a devastating loss as her collection of Grand Slam trophies were stolen during her evacuation from the raging wildfires in Los Angeles. Shriver, a former world No. 3 and winner of 21 Grand Slam doubles titles, had to quickly flee her home with only the clothes on her back as the flames drew closer.

The trophies, which represented decades of hard work and dedication to the sport, were priceless to Shriver. She had hoped to one day pass them down to her children and grandchildren as a reminder of her illustrious career.

Shriver is heartbroken by the theft and is pleading for their safe return. She is offering a reward for anyone who has information leading to the recovery of her treasured trophies.

As the wildfires continue to ravage the area, Shriver is focusing on the safety of her family and community, but the loss of her trophies has added another layer of pain to an already difficult situation. She is grateful for the outpouring of support from fans and fellow players, and hopes that the person responsible for the theft will have a change of heart and return the trophies to their rightful owner.

  • Pam Shriver says ‘most’ of her grand slam trophies were stolen while at hotel during wildfire evacuation

    CNN
     —

Tennis Hall of Famer Pam Shriver, one of the greatest doubles players in history, said Thursday that a car she was using to temporarily store “most” of her grand slam trophies was stolen.

Shriver was at the time staying in a hotel in Marina Del Rey after she evacuated her home because of the Los Angeles-area wildfires.

“My son & I are at a police station reporting our car was stolen from the hotel parking lot we evacuated to when fires started,” Shriver said in a post on X on Thursday. “This was the car that had most of my major trophies being stored until we could safely move back home.”

CNN has reached out to local police for comment.

Shriver is a commentator for ESPN and Tennis Channel as well as the coach of Donna Vekić. According to ESPN, Shriver said a Dodge Durango Hellcat had all five of her US Open trophies, all five of her French Open trophies and one Australian Open trophy. She told ESPN she switched hotels after the incident.

Shriver said to ESPN she discovered the vehicle missing around 7:30 a.m. local time Thursday from the Marina Del Rey DoubleTree, where her family was staying after evacuating because of the Pacific Palisades fire.

“Now, my family’s a victim of a crime, too,” Shriver said to ESPN. “It’s really sad on so many levels that, when people are at their lowest and in their most difficult times, people are doing things like this.”

    Shriver at Wimbledon in 1991.

According to ESPN, her Brentwood home is still standing and that she is waiting for heating and power to be restored.

Shriver was supposed to be at the Australian Open to coach Vekić, the top women’s player out of Croatia who is ranked No. 19 in the world. Instead, she’s been coaching the tournament’s 18th seed from afar, opting to remain in Los Angeles.

In a nearly a three-hour match Friday in Melbourne, Vekić defeated No. 12 seed Diana Shnaider 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3), 7-5 to advance to the round of 16. She’ll next face No. 27 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia.

Shriver won 21 grand slam women’s doubles titles in her storied career – 20 of those coming with another tennis great, Martina Navratilova – and one mixed doubles grand slam title.

Shriver won seven Australian Open titles, five Wimbledon titles, five US Open titles and four French Open titles in women’s doubles. She won a French Open mixed doubles title in 1987 with Spain’s Emilio Sánchez.

In 1984, Shriver and Navratilova won the calendar grand slam, winning all four women’s doubles major titles that year.

Shriver was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2002.

Tennis legend Pam Shriver revealed in a recent interview that ‘most’ of her grand slam trophies were stolen while she was staying at a hotel during a wildfire evacuation. Shriver, who is a former professional tennis player and winner of 21 grand slam titles, expressed her devastation at the loss of her cherished trophies.

The theft occurred while Shriver was forced to evacuate her home due to a nearby wildfire. She had placed her trophies in a safe at the hotel where she was staying, but upon her return, she discovered that ‘most’ of them were missing. Shriver did not specify which trophies were stolen or how many exactly were taken.

In the interview, Shriver expressed her sadness and frustration at the loss of the trophies, which represented years of hard work and dedication to her tennis career. She also appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the recovery of the stolen trophies.

Fans and fellow athletes have since expressed their support for Shriver and offered their condolences for the loss of her prized possessions. Many have called for the safe return of the trophies and for those responsible for the theft to be held accountable.

Despite the setback, Shriver remains hopeful that her trophies will be recovered and is determined to move forward and continue to cherish the memories of her successful tennis career.

  • Pam Shriver shares devastating news about becoming victim of robbery & losing her trophies after evacuating from LA wildfires

American tennis icon Pam Shriver was devastated after becoming the victim of a robbery amid the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles. The former World No. 3 also lost the majority of her trophies in the unfortunate incident.

Shriver, who was born in Baltimore and resides in Los Angeles, revealed in an X post on January 16 that her car was stolen from the parking lot of a hotel they were staying in. She added that her family had evacuated to the hotel due to the wildfires and most of her trophies were in the stolen car.

“My son & I are at a police station reporting our car was stolen from the hotel parking lot we evacuated to when fires started. This was the car that had most of my major trophies being stored until we could safely move back home,” Pam Shriver wrote.

Shriver won an impressive 21 singles and 112 doubles titles in her career. While she couldn’t win any Grand Slam singles titles, the 62-year-old amassed a staggering 21 in the doubles and an Olympic gold medal at the 1988 Games as well.

She married actor George Lazenby in 2002, and after giving birth to three children, the couple got divorced in 2011. After the wildfires started last week, Shriver prayed for the safety of the city and her 23-year-old house and revealed that she and her children were safe while Lazenby was evacuated from the Pacific Palisades.

“Praying for our many friends who have lost their houses & hoping winds calm soon. I am grateful I was planning on being @MaunaLaniHI for a vacation with my kids. Grateful @LazenbyReal was evacuated from Pacific Palisades & is safe. Praying for my house of 23 years,” she wrote.

Since retiring as one of the decorated doubles players, Shriver has been working as a tennis analyst for ESPN and is part of the coaching team of Dona Vekic, who is currently competing in the Australian Open.

Following Donna Vekic’s dominant win in the second round at the 2025 Australian Open, Pam Shriver revealed she had followed the match point by point despite facing numerous challenges to watch the Croatian tennis player down Harriet Dart 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.

“‘Watched’ match point by point on AO app but could not figure out how to find it streamed in US. You don’t sweat the small stuff in LA atm,” she wrote.

The 62-year-old had to sleep with three rescue cats, and at 4:50 am following the match.

“I have never slept in same room as three rescue cats, but these are unusual times in LA. I am starting at 4:45am because long played with Donna’s match. Starting at 4:50 am how much sleep can I get?”

The 21-time Grand Slam doubles champion joined Vekic’s coaching team in 2022 and has led her to the Monterrey Open title and a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
