Ranji Trophy 2024-25 – IPL-like scenes in Delhi as fans flock to watch Virat Kohli play
The Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Railways was to start at 9.30am, but fans were lined up outside the Arun Jaitley Stadium from 5am itself. They were afraid they might not find a seat in the limited stands available for the game and, therefore, would miss a chance to see their favourite, Virat Kohli, in action. These fans had come not only from the NCR region but also from the surrounding states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan. On Wednesday morning, when this reporter reached the Delhi Gate metro station, the closest one to the stadium, the scene was completely different from other Ranji matches. There was a huge crowd both inside and outside the metro station, just like during an IPL match, and was shouting “Kohli, Kohli… RCB, RCB”.
Two law students, Tejas and Nirvan, had come from Sonipat, Haryana. When asked if they had come for Kohli, Tejas jokingly said, “No brother, we have come to support the Railways team.” And both burst out laughing. “We have come here just to see Virat Kohli, else who bunks classes to watch a Ranji match,” Nirvan said.
On the way to the stadium, the crowd had increased manifold. Thousands of spectators were in front of Gate 15 and 16, waiting for the gates to be opened. There was even a stampede briefly but the police controlled it immediately and no one was hurt.
There crowd had people of all ages and backgrounds. Vijay Sharma, a Noida resident, had taken leave from his office so that he could bring his wife and two daughters to the match and they could watch their favourite cricketer playing.
When the gates finally opened at 9am, the Gautam Gambhir stand, with a capacity of about 6500, was filled in a jiffy. And there were people still outside the gate. Seeing that, the DDCA officials decided to open the Bishan Singh Bedi stand as well. Only after that, everyone was able to enter the stadium.
However, they must have been a bit disappointed when Delhi captain Ayush Badoni opted to field after winning the toss. But as soon as Kohli walked onto the field, they filled the entire stadium with the chants of “Kohli, Kohli” and “RCB, RCB”. When Kohli acknowledged them by waving his hand, the chants grew louder.
During the 11th over of the day, a spectator broke the barricading, reached Kohli who was standing in slips, and touched his feet. The security personnel ran after him and escorted him back. After this, Special Task Force personnel were deployed along the boundary line. Perhaps because they were not aware, they ended up roaming in front of the sightscreen, which caused a couple of short stoppages.
During the first session, when Railways lost five wickets for 66, the fans’ hopes of seeing Kohli bat increased. But a partnership of 104 in 33 overs between Upendra Yadav and Karn Sharma dashed them. This possibility again gained momentum when Navdeep Saini took two wickets in two balls just before tea. But once again, a half-century partnership put paid to it.With the chances of Kohli batting fading, the spectators started leaving. By the end of the day, half of them had left. But with Delhi 41 for 1 at stumps, and Kohli one wicket away from walking in, expect them to be lined up outside the stadium at 5am once again.

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli‘s much-hyped return to Delhi squad turned out to be a damp squib as the former India captain was clean bowled for just 6 runs on the second day of the Ranji Trophy clash against Railways.
Kohli, whose comeback had put Delhi into a frenzy, walked out to bat to loud cheers after the dismissal of Yash Dhull. The Railways bowlers tested the modern day great with some fine incoming deliveries that Kohli managed to play.
Virat got off the mark with a single to the covers as the Delhi crowd cheered on.
As Himanshu Sangwan came in the attack, Virat stepped out of the crease and hit a delivery to the long-on fence for his first boundary and the Delhi crowd went berserk.
However, Himanshu Sangwan had his revenge on the very next delivery as Kohli again stepped out of his crease, but the ball came back in viciously after pitching and sneaked through the bat-pad gap to send the off-stump cart-wheeling all the way to the slips.
The Delhi crowd was stunned into silence as a disappointed Kohli walked back towards the pavilion – his stay at the crease lasting 15 balls accounting for 6 runs.Who is Himanshu Sangwan
Born in Najafgarh, the right-arm medium-fast bowler also hails from Delhi and made his List A debut in 2019 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, followed by his Twenty20 debut in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and first-class debut in the Ranji Trophy in the same year.
Sangwan worked as a ticket collector at the New Delhi Railway Station before his cricketing career took off.
Sangwan’s time at the MRF Pace Foundation, where he trained under Australian fast-bowling great Glenn McGrath, marked a pivotal moment in his career. Sangwan’s growth as a bowler was greatly aided by McGrath’s advice, who placed a strong emphasis on patience and keeping to the fundamentals.
Sangwan put up a standout effort at the Wankhede Stadium in a Ranji Trophy match versus Mumbai. In the game, he claimed six wickets, including the valuable scalps of Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane, helping Railways defeat the 41-time Ranji winners by ten wickets.
Virat Kohli clean bowled: Who is Himanshu Sangwan, who ruined India superstar’s Ranji Trophy returnIndian cricket fans were left stunned as they witnessed captain Virat Kohli being clean bowled for a duck in his much-anticipated Ranji Trophy return. The man responsible for this unexpected dismissal was none other than Himanshu Sangwan, a relatively unknown fast bowler hailing from Haryana.
Sangwan, who has been making steady progress in domestic cricket, proved his mettle by dismissing one of the world’s best batsmen with a peach of a delivery. His pace, swing, and accuracy troubled Kohli right from the start, eventually leading to his downfall.
But who is Himanshu Sangwan, and how did he manage to outsmart a batting genius like Kohli? Sangwan, a 26-year-old pacer, has been a consistent performer for Haryana in domestic cricket. He has honed his skills by playing in various age-group tournaments and has gradually risen through the ranks to make a name for himself.
Sangwan’s ability to swing the ball both ways, coupled with his sharp pace, makes him a dangerous proposition for any batsman. His performance against Kohli in the Ranji Trophy match not only showcased his talent but also earned him widespread recognition in the cricketing fraternity.
While Kohli’s dismissal may have come as a shock to many, it was a testament to Sangwan’s hard work and dedication towards the game. His impressive bowling display not only helped his team but also provided a glimpse of his potential at the highest level.
As cricket fans continue to ponder over Kohli’s rare failure, Himanshu Sangwan’s name will undoubtedly be remembered for his role in one of the most memorable moments in domestic cricket. The young pacer has announced himself on the big stage and is set to make a mark in the years to come.

Delhi vs Railways, Ranji Trophy Live Score: Fan runs in to touch Kohli’s feet
Delhi vs Railways, Ranji Trophy Live Score: The presence of Virat Kohli has significantly enhanced the stature of this Ranji Trophy fixture while providing a much-needed boost to Delhi’s team morale as they aim to conclude their underwhelming season positively in their final group D encounter against Railways.Railways, with 17 points from six matches, maintain a realistic chance of advancing to the knockout phase if they secure a victory with bonus points against Delhi, which would elevate their total to 24.
Delhi’s campaign, yielding 14 points from six matches, remains theoretically alive, although the anticipated crowd of 10,000 spectators appears more interested in the spectacle than the outcome.
In the qualification race, Tamil Nadu (25 points from six matches), Chandigarh (19 from six matches), and Saurashtra (18 from six matches) hold more advantageous positions compared to both Delhi and Railways.
If Delhi fields first, attendance will likely remain under 3000, but should Delhi bat first, spectators would rather see Sanat Sangwan or Arpit Rana dismissed swiftly to witness Kohli at the crease.
The anticipation surrounding Kohli’s return has been so significant that the Arun Jaitley Stadium has attracted broadcasters preparing for the live stream, marking the celebrated batsman’s first Ranji appearance after a gap of 12 years and three months.

Virat Kohli hitting triple century against Railways in Ranji Trophy won’t be a big deal but if he fails…
Virat Kohli celebrated his 24th birthday on the final day of his previous Ranji Trophy game, in November 2012, when he was a mere ten Tests young. As he closes in on his first first-class appearance for Delhi in more than a dozen years, Kohli is 36, has 123 Test caps, boasts 30 centuries and an average of 46.85 despite producing just three hundreds in the last five years.
Virat Kohli during a training session ahead of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 cricket match between Delhi and Railways, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium(Hindustan Times) In normal course, Kohli wouldn’t be playing against Railways in the final round of league games, starting on Thursday. He is coming off a gruelling five-Test tour of Australia (never mind his returns after the Perth century or the 1-3 score line), is recovering from a neck strain and will figure in a three-match One-Day International series against England from February 6, morphing into the Champions Trophy where India begin their campaign against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20. But these aren’t normal times in Indian cricket. Defeats in six of their last eight Tests, allied with collective and repeated top-order meltdowns, have culminated in the Board of Control for Cricket in India insisting on its star players representing their states whenever available.
Laudable as that concept is, a more commonsensical approach would have been prudent. Instead, ahead of a string of white-ball internationals, the likes of Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma, his 50-over deputy Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja (who all played in Australia and are in the ODI set-up) were practically compelled to play in the previous set of matches. That responsibility has been thrust on Kohli and KL Rahul in the latest round, in many ways a pyrrhic exercise because even if their respective teams make it to the knockouts, neither of these stalwarts will be available for selection.
Let’s stick with Kohli, him of 25 previous Ranji appearances. He will play under Ayush Badoni, like Pant did last week, against Railways at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the national capital, in a nothing-to-gain situation. Railways, the two-time former champions, are perched ahead of Delhi in the points standings – 17 to 14 after six rounds apiece – but without any disrespect, they don’t possess the most threatening bowling attack. If Kohli makes a hundred, or a double or even a triple, big deal, right? After all, it is against Railways. And if he picks up another low score like he did in the last seven innings in Australia, his growing band of critics will have a field day. ‘Can’t even score against Railways.’
There is no denying the astronomic increase in interest levels and the dramatic uplift of the profile of the Ranji Trophy when the big names turn up for their respective states. The DDCA has been seized of the need to throw open multiple stands in anticipation of a rare occurrence – Kohli playing a domestic game – but token appearances don’t really serve any purpose. India’s next red-ball fixture isn’t until June 20, when they face England in the first of five Tests at Leeds. These Ranji Trophy runs will have little import by then, not with the IPL serving as the final competitive outing before that Test series. But given their losses to New Zealand and Australia, the players are left with no bargaining chips and have little option but to toe the line espoused by head coach Gautam Gambhir and selection panel chairman Ajit Agarkar.
One wonders what’s going through Kohli’s mind. Even during his worst phases – and there have been a few of those, especially in recent times – he has been short on neither intensity nor commitment. Let’s get one thing clear: Virat Kohli doesn’t play a game of cricket for the sake of it, out of a sense of (forced?) duty or responsibility. When he is on the field, he gives it all, like he has done from the time he started playing representatively two decades back. But nothing has energised him more than the scent of serious battle – international games, franchise action. There was a reason why Kohli stayed away from meaningless ‘practice’ games on overseas tours; he found it hard to rouse himself, given the relative lack of stakes. He has now been thrust into a situation where he has to lump it and dig deep to summon the fire whose flames have threatened to lick the sky from time to time, but which is increasingly losing sparkle, if not heat.
Himanshu Sangwan, Kunal Yadav, Purnank Tyagi and Karn Sharma (the leggie who played his only Test under Kohli, in Adelaide in December 2014). Hardly Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon. What does Kohli have in store over the next four days?
Virat Kohli hitting triple century against Railways in Ranji Trophy won’t be a big deal but if he fails…Virat Kohli, the captain of the Indian cricket team and one of the greatest batsmen of all time, is known for his incredible batting prowess and ability to score big runs in crucial situations. So, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he were to score a triple century against a domestic team like Railways in the Ranji Trophy.
However, what would be truly shocking is if Virat Kohli were to fail to score big runs in such a match. Given his track record and reputation as a run-scoring machine, a failure to perform against a relatively weaker team like Railways would raise eyebrows and lead to questions about his form and mindset.
Fans and critics alike would be left wondering what went wrong and if there were any underlying issues affecting Kohli’s performance. It would certainly be a rare and unexpected turn of events for a player of his caliber.
In conclusion, while a triple century from Virat Kohli may not be a big deal considering his past achievements, a failure to do so would definitely be a major talking point in the world of cricket.

Virat Kohli Declines Team Manager’s Offer During Ranji Trophy Camp, Wins Hearts For His Simplicity
Virat Kohli returned to domestic red-ball cricket after a gap of 12 years, practicing with the Delhi state players ahead of their Ranji Trophy match against Railways, starting January 30. On the second consecutive day of his practice at the Arun Jaitley stadium, Virat gave the perfect example of his grounded nature, as he refused help to carry his kit in and out, doing everything on his own, just like before. Though Kohli last played for Delhi in 2012, against Uttar Pradesh, those who have known him over this period, say not a lot has changed.
As the Delhi team manager Mahesh Bhati reached out to Virat, offering his help in carrying he kit bag around, the Indian cricket team star turned it down, saying it is his stuff and only he should carry it.
‘Virat, teri help kara dete hain [“Virat, let us help you].’ He replied, ‘Bhaia, kya baat kar rahe ho? Mere khelne ka samaan hai, mai khud leke jaunga [“Bhaia, what are you saying? It’s my playing gear, I’ll carry it myself]’. He carried the kit bag on his shoulders and went inside the dressing room,” Bhati said in an interview with the Times of India.
Bhati also revealed that he and Virat recalled the old times and laughed about how things used tobe during the Under-19 days.
“I was the coach when Virat played Under-19. He played under my coaching only. We have shared a great bond since the beginning. I also love cracking jokes, and so does he. So, we were recalling old memories and bursting into laughter. The first thing he asked was, ‘Bhaia, matting pe ab ladke nahi khelte kya? [Bhaia, don’t boys play on matting anymore?]’ I said, ‘Pagal ho gaya hai tu! Matting kaha hai ab? Ab kahin Delhi mein matting nahi milegi [Where is matting now? You won’t find matting anywhere in Delhi anymore].”
“He said he used to play cut shots and pull shots on matting. He added, ‘Bhaia, maza bada aata tha pull marne mein, awaaz sahi aati thi.’” [Bhaia, hitting pull shots was so much fun; the sound was just perfect]
“Whichever player has played on matting, you will see them play cut and pull shots elegantly, freely, and with confidence. The old players, including Virat, do that really well. It’s because of the cricket they played on matting.”
“Virat also recalled the moments when he used to play on grounds with uneven surfaces and long grass. Back then, matting used to serve as the pitch for them. Bouncers, cuts, pulls, and short-pitched deliveries were the scenes cricketers loved, and Virat spoke about all of that.”
“Maine kaha, ‘Matting ki story khatam ho gayi hai, cricket bahut change ho gayi hai [The matting story is over; cricket has changed a lot]’ He said, ‘Cricket ka maza usi mein tha [The fun of cricket was in that].”
“Virat also shared an incident when he and another batter were playing on matting with thick grass all around. He hit a shot and assumed it was a boundary, but when they came together for a fist bump, the fielder ran them out,” Bhati shared.
