Virat Kohli checks in for Ranji Trophy: Greets old friends, plays football before batting for an hour | Cricket News
At 9 am on Tuesday, Pradeep Rana, a Delhi police sub-inspector was shocked by the presence of media gathering outside the Virender Sehwag gate at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. He alerted his superior over the phone: “Sir do log hi hai jyada security lag sakti hai, kuch aur log bhej do (We’ll need more security for today, please send more force).”
A few minutes later, the buzz outside the Kotla stadium gathered pace with TV reporters and photo-journalists, trying to get the best shot of Virat Kohli, who entered the stadium in his car.
Kohli is playing a Ranji Trophy match for Delhi after a gap of 12 years. Delhi will take on Railways from January 30 in their last group match.
Delhi’s team manager Mahesh Bhati greeted Kohli outside the Virat Kohli pavilion, handed over a packet and the duo burst into laughter. The jokes between Bhati and Kohli continued for the next three hours. Bhati proudly flexed about the fact that he had known India’s great since his U-16 days.

Sanjeev Chaudhary, Delhi’s team physio quips after seeing a few known faces, “There is more crowd (media) today,” and informs which net will Kohli practice.
Kohli stepped down from the pavilion named after him with Bhati. The Delhi team playing football, stopped for a while as their head turned towards Kohli, whom literally all of them idolise. Barring Navdeep Saini (India teammate) and Himmat Singh (one season at RCB), Kohli has not played with anyone in the current Delhi team.
Following the usual handshakes, Kohli was joined by head coach Sarandeep Singh and batting coach Bantu Singh.

Kohli teamed up with Saini in the circle football. After a while, the team took a lap of the ground. Team manager Bhati was again in action, this time distributing bibs. The 20-member Delhi team was divided into two and played football with trainer Chaudhary donning the role of referee. During that 15-minute period, all the Delhi players were trying to impress Kohli, but the 36-year-old was easily the best player in the field.

A short while later, Chaudhary instructed the Delhi players to be ready for the warm-up. Delhi captain Ayush Badoni gingerly walked towards Kohli and stood next to him during the warm-up. It was maybe to break the ice as after the warm-up, Kohli along with Badoni entered the nets at Hill B at 10:15.
And Kohli started his one-hour batting session.
At 10:25, he started by knocking with a bat without a sticker, which looked like a hammer. It was not a regular-size bat. The blade had no edges, it was just thick willow right from the handle to the bottom. He used it only for five minutes while receiving the throwdowns from half the pitch.
At 10:40, he switched to the second nets, where two left-arm spinners Harsh Tyagi, and Sumit Mathur and off-spinner Shivam Sharma were bowling in tandem. Batting deep from his crease, Kohli dominated the spinners. The main focus was on using his feet.

Twenty minutes later, he walked to the pacer’s nets and faced Saini, Sidhhant Sharma, Money Grewal, Rahul Gehlot and Mayank Gusain. Kohli again faced the seamers from standing inside the crease. The drives were there and he was beaten too. But the standout thing about his batting against the pacers was Kohli playing square cuts and square drives, which is a rarity.
With Kohli facing the Delhi bowlers, an eight-year-old Kabir Khan with a sketch of the player in his hands was asking his father Shawej Khan, a former Delhi cricketer, “Papa Virat Kohli sach mey aapke dost hai? (Is Virat Kohli really your friend?).” Shawej, who now runs a sports shop at Khan Market, smiled at his son and said: “He will meet us after finishing his batting.”
Shawej was right. Once Kohli was done with batting practice and he started to put his bats, pads and gloves in his kit, he shouted at Shawej.
Shawej, who has played with Kohli in U-16 and U-19 for Delhi forgot about his eight-year-old, who was awestruck standing outside the net area that his father is a friend of his idol. Kohli hugged Shawej, called up manager Bhati, and cracked a joke patting Shawej and the trio would indulge in a bit of laughter.

In those five minutes, Shawej forgot about his son, who couldn’t believe what he had just seen. Kabir later met his idol and took a photo, an autograph on his sketch of Kohli. He became an instant star among the TV journalists with everyone taking a byte of the kid. Meanwhile, Shawej refused to share anything from his conversation, “Just old stories.”
The Delhi training session was not done.
After finishing his batting practice, Kohli spent the next 15 minutes practising the slip catching.

Meanwhile, trainer Chaudhary was putting the plastic cups for the last final session — the sprint. When asked if this was the longest training session the Delhi Ranji team ever had, he laughed and replied: “He has inspired everyone and is setting an example for others.”
A DDCA insider said the highlight of the two-and-half-hour Delhi’s training session was that it was the longest these boys have trained before a Ranji game.He was true too after an exhausting session, most of the Delhi squad looked jarred but not Kohli, who signed off with a lap.
Virat Kohli checks in for Ranji Trophy: Greets old friends, plays football before batting for an hourIndian cricket team captain Virat Kohli made a surprise appearance at the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Mumbai, where he greeted old friends and teammates before spending some time playing football with the players.
Kohli, who is not a part of the ongoing T20 series against West Indies, decided to use the break to spend some time playing domestic cricket and honing his skills. He arrived at the ground early in the morning and was seen chatting with his former teammates and coaches.
After exchanging pleasantries, Kohli joined the players for a friendly game of football to warm up before heading to the nets for a batting session. The 33-year-old spent close to an hour in the nets, working on his technique and getting some much-needed practice.
Kohli’s presence at the Ranji Trophy match was a pleasant surprise for the players and fans alike, who were thrilled to see the Indian captain in action. His dedication to the game and commitment to improving his skills even during breaks from international cricket is a testament to his passion for the sport.
As Kohli gears up for the upcoming Test series against South Africa, his time spent at the Ranji Trophy match will surely help him stay sharp and in top form. Fans can’t wait to see him back in action on the field, leading the Indian team to victory once again.

Virat Kohli’s ‘Captaincy Gesture’ Wins Hearts Ahead Of Ranji Trophy Return
The talismanic Indian batter Virat Kohli is all set to make a return to Ranji Trophy, for the first time in over 12 years, this Thursday. Kohli, who last featured for Delhi in the domestic white-ball event in 2012, is a part of the Delhi team for the Ranji Trophy match against Railways. A couple of days before the start of the fixture, Kohli was spotted rubbing shoulders with his Delhi teammates in a practice session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
Kohli hit the ground in Kotla on Tuesday morning, as several videos and pictures surfaced on social media. He had already informed the Delhi and District State Association of his intent to train with the boys on Tuesday.
“Kohli informed head coach Sarandeep Singh about his willingness to train with the team. It will be a great experience for the Delhi players if they get to spend so much time with him,” a DDCA official told the Times of India on Monday.

— Tanuj Singh (@ImTanujSingh) January 28, 2025It has also been reported that Kohli was given the offer of leading the Delhi team in the match against Railways but he declined. With Rishabh Pant not part of the fixture either, Ayush Badoni is set to continue leading the side.
“Pant has been playing first-class cricket since Duleep Trophy in September. He has played 12 first-class matches in the last three-and-a-half months. With the Champions Trophy around the corner, he has been advised rest in order to get ready for the white-ball season,” an official said.
Kohli was part of the team when he featured last in a domestic red-ball competition for Delhi, against Uttar Pradesh at Ghaziabad’s Mohan Nagar in 2012.
“Obviously, it is a great experience for our junior players as they will get to share the dressing room with Virat. If you look at our team, only Navdeep Saini has played alongside Virat in the IPL and for India. In fact, none of the players in the team have played with Virat in the Ranji Trophy. They can learn a lot by watching him,” DDCA secretary Ashok Sharma told PTI.
Asked about the security arrangements for the game, Sharma said, “We know Virat’s presence raises the profile of the match. Normally, we have 10 to 12 private security personnel for a regular Ranji match, but we will definitely increase security so that Virat can train without any disturbance.”
Despite the return of Kohli, the Delhi vs Railways match will remain free for spectators, with the DDCA also opening three stands at the Ambedkar Stadium End. Kohli didn’t feature in Delhi’s previous match due to neck sprain.

Virat Kohli to train with Delhi squad on Tuesday ahead of first Ranji Trophy appearance since 2012
Virat Kohli will train with the Delhi team on Tuesday ahead of what will be his first Ranji Trophy appearance since 2012. Delhi coach Sarandeep Singh confirmed that Kohli will join the squad, having confirmed his availability last week for their final group fixture against Railways at the Arun Jaitley Stadium from January 30 to February 2.Over the last couple of days, photos and videos have emerged on social media of Kohli working with former India and RCB batting coach Sanjay Bangar.

Rahul named in Karnataka squad
KL Rahul has been named in Karnataka’s squad for their must-win Ranji Trophy fixture against table-toppers Haryana in Bengaluru later this week. He was included subject to fitness but ESPNcricinfo understands he has been cleared by the BCCI medical panel after an elbow niggle kept him out of the previous match against Punjab.Rahul’s return means Karnataka will be at full strength with Devdutt Padikkal and Prasidh Krishna, who were both part of the Test squad in Australia, also part of the squad.

Pant played the previous match against Saurashtra where he managed just 1 and 17 as Delhi went down by ten wickets.

Top seed Sabalenka had gone into Saturday’s final as the favorite to win her fourth Grand Slam, having previously triumphed at the Australian Open in each of the previous two editions. The Belarusian also won the US Open for the first time in her career last year.
29-year-old Keys, meanwhile, has enjoyed a resurgence of sorts at the start of 2025, which she has now capped by winning her first ever singles Grand Slam.
Her only previous final had been at the US Open all the way back in 2017, when she lost to compatriot Sloane Stephens.
Champion Keys will take home $2.1 million for coming out on top in the women’s singles tournament in Melbourne. That’s an 11% increase from 2024.
There is equal prize money for men and women at the Australian Open, which means either Jannik Sinner or Alexander Zverev will collect the same amount on Sunday.Sabalenka, the beaten finalist, meanwhile, will pocket $1.18 million.
What is Madison Keys’ WTA rankings after winning the Australian Open 2025?
Already ranked No. 1 in the world, Sabalenka stays at the top despite losing in the final in Australia.Keys, meanwhile, began the week as the world No. 14 but has jumped seven places to seven as a result of winning in Melbourne.

Madison Keys’ recent victory at the Australian Open wasn’t just about winning a prestigious tennis tournament – it also came with a host of additional benefits that will have a lasting impact on her career. One major perk of Keys’ Australian Open success is the significant increase in prize money she received. The champion’s prize money for the tournament was a whopping $4.12 million, which is a huge boost to her earnings and financial stability. This will allow Keys to invest in her training, equipment, and team, giving her a competitive edge in future tournaments.
In addition to the financial rewards, Keys’ victory also comes with increased sponsorship opportunities. Winning a Grand Slam title elevates a player’s profile and makes them more attractive to sponsors looking to align themselves with successful athletes. This could lead to lucrative endorsement deals and partnerships that will further boost Keys’ earnings and visibility in the sport.
Furthermore, Keys’ Australian Open victory has solidified her status as one of the top players in the world. This will open up opportunities for her to compete in more high-profile tournaments, gain entry into exclusive events, and potentially earn a higher seeding in future competitions. This heightened status will also bring increased media attention and fan support, further elevating Keys’ reputation within the tennis community.
Overall, Madison Keys’ Australian Open success is more than just a shiny trophy – it’s a game-changer that will have a lasting impact on her career, earnings, and opportunities in the world of professional tennis.

Ranji Trophy – Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant miss out, Siddharth Desai misses perfect ten
Highlights from the opening day of the sixth round of matches
Rohit’s big miss on Ranji return
Rohit Sharma‘s Ranji Trophy return after nearly 10 years wasn’t as memorable as he’d hoped it would be. His 19-ball vigil brought him 3, and he was out caught off the leading edge while attempting a half-nudge, half-pull into the leg side off a rising delivery from Jammu & Kashmir’s Umar Nazir. It was reminiscent of two recent Test dismissals for Rohit: against Pat Cummins at the MCG, and against Matt Henry at the Wankhede Stadium.Rohit’s dismissal quickly followed Yashasvi Jaiswal’s after Mumbai opted to bat first. Ajinkya Rahane, the captain, and Shreyas Iyer also managed just 12 and 11 respectively in a first innings that lasted just 33.2 overs with Mumbai bowled out for 120. But excellent work with the ball means Mumbai have a chance of limiting their deficit to under three figures.
Rohit’s return to the domestic set-up comes on the back of the BCCI’s new guidelines, which have come into force since India’s 3-1 reversal in Australia earlier this month. Rohit’s Test future hangs in the balance after he opted out of the Sydney Test, but he has reiterated that he hasn’t retired and is still hopeful of leading the team in Tests.Gill and Punjab collapse against swing and seam
In Bengaluru, Shubman Gill‘s outing was equally forgettable, not just with the bat but on the field as captain too. Punjab, who were missing Abhishek Sharma, were bowled out for 55 with Gill managing just 4 before nicking behind as swing and seam bowlers ruled on a greenish deck at the Chinnaswamy. By stumps, Punjab were so far behind in the game that they’ll probably need a Gill special to even salvage one point from the match.Gill’s return to domestic cricket presented an opportunity for him to get some match time and confidence back following underwhelming returns in Australia where he featured in just three of the five Tests, while aggregating 93 runs in five innings. His returns outside Asia since the 2021 World Test Championship final have been in particular focus – he averages 17.64 across 18 innings.Pant misses out; Jadeja takes five on Rajkot turner
In Rajkot, Rishabh Pant lasted just 10 deliveries as he was out to Dharmendrasinh Jadeja. Pant’s dismissal was part of Delhi’s top-order collapse against spin. Ravindra Jadeja, a formidable threat on turners, thrived in conditions tailor-made for him as he picked up his 35th first-class five-for as Delhi were bowled out for 188.In reply, Saurashtra were adrift by 25 at stumps but had lost five wickets, including those of Cheteshwar Pujara and Jadeja, who has top-scored so far with 38. Pujara, who isn’t part of India’s Test plans, made just 6. Apart from the 234 he made against Chhattisgarh, Pujara has endured modest returns so far this season, managing scores of 16, 0, 2, 3 and 14 in his other innings.
Siddarth Desai misses perfect 10
Gujarat left-arm spinner Siddharth Desai picked up nine wickets in the very first session of play against Uttarakhand in Ahmedabad, and was in with a chance of becoming the second bowler – after Haryana’s Anshul Kamboj – to record a perfect 10 this season. That chance ended when Vishal Jayswal picked up the final wicket.Desai ended with 9 for 36, the best figures in first-class cricket by a Gujarat player, bettering the record held by Jasu Patel who picked up 8 for 21 against Saurashtra in 1960-61. Desai who scalped a match haul of nine wickets on debut, against Kerala back in 2017-18, has emerged as Gujarat’s front-line spinner since Piyush Chawla left to return to his home state Uttar Pradesh.
Khaleel takes maiden five-for
Eight years after he made his first-class debut, Khaleel Ahmed has picked up his maiden first-class five-for. This included key Vidarbha wickets including those of Karun Nair who was in prolific form at the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His figures read an impressive 15-5-37-5.Khaleel’s performance coincides with his being on the fringes of the national team, especially with the selectors keen on looking for left-arm seamers, a style of bowler India’s Test attack has missed since Zaheer Khan’s exit. This is only Khaleel’s 17th first-class fixture – three of them have come in the current Ranji season (including this game), and two in August in the Duleep Trophy, in which he took nine wickets at 21.66.
The Ranji Trophy is in full swing and there have been some surprising results in the latest round of matches. Some big names in Indian cricket, including Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant, have missed out on making big contributions for their respective teams.Rohit Sharma, who was playing for Mumbai, failed to make a significant impact with the bat in his team’s match against Karnataka. Shubman Gill, representing Punjab, also couldn’t get going and was dismissed for a low score against Delhi. Rishabh Pant, playing for Delhi, also failed to make a big score in the same match.
However, the standout performance of the round came from Siddharth Desai, who narrowly missed out on a perfect ten-wicket haul for Goa against Mizoram. Desai ended up with figures of 9 for 34 in the second innings, guiding his team to a comfortable victory.
Overall, it has been an exciting round of matches in the Ranji Trophy, with some unexpected results and standout performances. Fans will be eagerly looking forward to more action in the upcoming matches.
