  • Ranji Trophy – Mum vs K&K – Rohit Sharma’s Ranji return lasts 19 balls as he falls for 3 against J&K

Rohit Sharma‘s return to the Ranji Trophy was a short-lived one – he lasted 19 balls and scored just three in Mumbai’s Group A fixture against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sharad Pawar Academy in BKC in Mumbai.

Rohit, India’s Test and ODI captain who has been going through a terrible run of form, was the focus of a lot of attention in the lead-up to the game as soon as he confirmed his presence in the game with a nod and “I will” at the Champions Trophy squad announcement press conference last week. With a white floppy hat and sunglasses on, Rohit was relaxed before the game, joking with his team-mates as they warmed up with some head volleyball.

But he wore a determined look as he walked out to open with his regular India opening partner in Tests, Yashasvi Jaiswal, after Mumbai’s captain Ajinkya Rahane opted to bat. To accommodate Rohit and Jaiswal at the top, Mumbai had to leave out Ayush Mhatre, who, in his debut season, has been one of Mumbai’s star performers: 408 runs from nine innings at an average of 45.33 with two centuries.

It was a cool winter morning in Mumbai, a relief after a week that saw temperatures touch the mid-30s. And J&K’s opening bowlers made sure to make use of the early-morning nip.

Auqib Nabi conceded a four early in the opening over but then tightened his lines; Rohit got off the mark with a single through the on side. But he was given a proper work over by Umar Nazir Mir, who bowled two successive maidens to him. Mir maintained a consistent line outside off and varied his lengths a touch, not allowing Rohit to get going.

Rohit managed to drive a Nabi delivery through the covers for a couple in the next over but once again was kept quiet by Mir, who got his reward on his 17th ball. He bowled a length delivery on the fifth stump, with a hint of movement away from the right-hand batter. Rohit looked to play his trademark pick-up shot over midwicket but only managed to get a leading edge to the off side. Paras Dogra ran a few yards to his left from mid-off to extra cover, called loud and clear, and pouched it to end Rohit’s stay in the middle.

The short stay in the middle meant that Rohit’s lean run in red-ball cricket continued. Across five home Tests against Bangladesh and New Zealand at home last year, he had just one half-century to show – against New Zealand in Bengaluru – with four single-digit scores across ten innings. He also had just one double-digit score in five innings in Australia, where he played in three of the five Test matches. He finished the 2024-25 Test season with a batting average of 10.93.

Indeed, Rohit’s first-class batting average of 10.43 across 16 innings in the 2024-25 season is the second-lowest for any batter since 2006 (for a minimum of 15 innings while batting in the top six). England’s Haseeb Hameed averaged 9.44 across 18 innings in the 2018 season.

Before Rohit, Jaiswal fell. Nabi managed to get his line right against the left-hand batter, getting a couple of balls to move away. One of those narrowly missed the outside edge of Jaiswal’s bat – a muted appeal was given not out. On the next ball – the third ball of the third over – Nabi got a length ball to jag back viciously; Jaiswal was caught off-guard, and was beaten on the inside edge and hit on the back leg right in front of middle and leg. He was quite deep in the crease and the umpire took little time in raising the finger. Jaiswal, who was one of India’s most successful batters at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, dragged himself off with 4 against his name.

Ranji Trophy – Mum vs K&K: Rohit Sharma’s Ranji return lasts 19 balls as he falls for 3 against J&K

In a highly anticipated Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Jammu & Kashmir, all eyes were on Rohit Sharma as he made his Ranji return after a long hiatus. However, the Indian cricket team’s captain’s comeback did not go as planned as he was dismissed for just 3 runs after facing 19 balls.

Rohit Sharma, who is known for his explosive batting and big scores in international cricket, was expected to make a big impact in the domestic circuit as well. But the J&K bowlers had other plans as they managed to get the better of him early in his innings.

Despite the setback, Mumbai managed to put up a decent total on the board, thanks to some resilient batting from the rest of the team. However, Jammu & Kashmir put up a strong fight and managed to chase down the target with ease.

It was a disappointing start to the season for Rohit Sharma, but knowing his talent and ability to bounce back, we can expect him to come back stronger in the upcoming matches. The Ranji Trophy is a great platform for him to get some match practice and find his form before the upcoming international assignments.

Overall, it was an exciting match with some great performances from both sides, but the spotlight was definitely on Rohit Sharma’s short-lived return to Ranji cricket. Let’s hope he can make a strong comeback in the next game and show why he is considered one of the best batsmen in the world.

  • Ajinkya Rahane ahead of Ranji Trophy game against J and K

A star studded Mumbai line-up is all set to light up the league game of Ranji Trophy as Indian captain Rohit Sharma and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will walk out to play against Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) at the MCA-BKC ground starting from Thursday.

Rohit’s return to domestic cricket has been the result of a series of bad form in red ball cricket lately. A 1-3 series loss in Australia forced the Indian board to come up with new guidelines for its contracted players which ensured its premium cricketers turn up for their respective states.

Sharma’s last appearance for the Mumbai team was in 2015 against Uttar Pradesh. He had a series of bad knocks in India’s tour of Australia, scoring 3,9, 10, 3, 6 runs in four Test matches, averaging around 10.93, and then decided to step down for the last Test against Australia in Sydney.

Is the bad phase and lack of runs running in Sharma’s mind? Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane says he is confident that Rohit will bounce back.

“I know Rohit. Rohit has always been relaxed. Even playing at the international level, his character is similar. His attitude is pretty much relaxed. He knows his game really well so, no one has to tell him what he needs to do. And Rohit knows his game really well. Once he gets in, I’m sure he will do well. He’s always been a relaxed, cool guy, on and off the field. He’s never changed, which is a very good thing.”

    Festive offer

Rahane, who has known Sharma for long now, says the veteran batsman is confident.

“A player has to be confident and I feel Rohit is really confident. He batted really well yesterday (in) a couple of sessions so it’s a part and parcel of a player’s career. I am really confident about Rohit and I am sure once he gets in, he will get a big one,” he added. “As a player, every player goes through that phase (and) that is part and parcel of any sportsman’s career. What is important is (that) he is hungry, he is determined to do well. I am sure, once he gets in, he will get a big one.”

Mumbai will also see Jaiswal coming back as an opener. It will be Sharma and Jaiswal opening the innings for defending champions. Jaiswal did play Ranji Trophy last season before he was picked for the Indian team.

Rahane says it’s good to have both of them back. He said, “Rohit, after a decade, (and) Yashasvi I think, (after) one year. But it’s good to have them back. Yashasvi has been doing well consistently in red-ball cricket. Rohit, we all know that he’s been doing really well as well. He led the team really well.”

Back in the dressing room, the Mumbai players have been asking questions to Sharma. Rahane says they are trying to learn from both of the India players. The Mumbai captain feels match preparation is important for any player.

“For any cricketer, getting match preparation (and) game-time is really important. Obviously, there is no red-ball (Test) cricket at this moment. But they are going to play white-ball (competitions).”

Mumbai are placed at third in the league with 22 points while J&K are placed second in the group A. The challenge for both the team is shifting back to red ball cricket mode. The Indian board this year had decided to conduct the Ranji Trophy in two phases. The board has sandwiched Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy in between the red ball cricket. With two league games to go, Mumbai and J&K will hope to get back in groove so that they can make it to the knockouts.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has decided to increase the security at their MCA-BKC ground after top Indian players have made themselves available for Ranji Trophy game.

Mumbai is scheduled to play Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on Thursday which will feature Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ajinkya Rahane, Shardul Thakur and Shivam Dube. As it’s free entry for fans, the MCA is expecting decent crowd might turn up to watch the game. As result more security personnel are being deployed so that no fan invades ground while match is on.

“We have decided to increase the on ground security for the game. We don’t want to take any chances as stars players are playing. We are hoping that fans will turn up to watch their stars play in Ranji Trophy as entry is free,” a MCA official said. Sharma last Ranji Trophy game came in 2015 and it will be after many years he will be turning up for his state team.

“We have decided to increase the security for the game. We don’t want to take any chances as current India players are playing. At the same time we have arranged approximately 500 seating arrangements which will be on first come-first basis, “ MCA president Ajinkya Naik said.

  • Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant tank miserably on Ranji Trophy return; out in single digits

India superstars Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill  and Rishabh Pant flopped miserably on their respective Ranji Trophy returns. India captain Rohit was dismissed for 3 off 19 balls, Jaswal managed just 5 off 8 balls, while Gill was sent back for 4 off 8 balls in round six of the Ranji Trophy. Pant, meanwhile was out for 1 off 10 balls.

Rohit Sharma walks back after getting dismissed for 3 in Mumbai vs J&K Ranji Trophy match

Playing his first Ranji Trophy match in nearly a decade, Rohit seemed completely out of sorts in the Mumbai vs Jammu and Kashmir Elite Group A match at the BKC ground in Mumbai. There was no sign of the free-flowing batter that once used to terrorise bowlers across the globe. J&K pacers Auqib Nabi and Umar Nazir gave him a hard time after Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane opted to bat first on Thursday morning.

After getting off the mark in the first over of the match with a single off Nabi’s bowling, Rohit got stuck at one end, failing to get on top of Nazir, who constantly troubled the Indian captain with his impeccable line and length. One delivery from Nazir bounced awkwardly from the good length to hit Rohit in the arm. So precise was Nazir, the only surviving member of the J&K team that beat Mumbai 10 years ago in the Ranji Trophy, that Rohit decided to skip down the track to upset his rhythm but failed to make any difference.

In the penultimate ball of the sixth over, Nazir pitched one short and wide. Rohit, in an identical manner in which he tried to combat Pat Cummins’ delivery in the first innings of the Melbourne Test, lifted his front leg and wanted to play the short arm pull shot but just like at the MCG, the ball got big on him and all Rohit managed was to sky it to mid-off.

    Jaiswal, Gill also disappoint

Before Rohit’s dismissal, Nabi gave his opening partners Jaiswal marching orders. J&K’s highest wicket-taker of the season got one to jag back in from a good length to trap Jaiswal right in front. The left-hander, who got off the mark with a sumptuous square cut off the second ball of the match, was guilty of staying back to ball, which could have been combated had he put in a good stride forward.

In the Karnataka vs Punjab match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, India’s No.3 Shubman Gill disappointed on his return to Ranji trophy after more than two and a half years. Gill, who last played for Punjab in July 2022, was out for 4.

Elsewhere, Rishabh Pant was dismissed for 1 off 10 balls in Delhi’s match against Saurashtra in Rajkot.

Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant, who are some of the biggest names in Indian cricket, made a disappointing return to the Ranji Trophy as they were all dismissed for single-digit scores in their respective matches.

Rohit Sharma, the Indian team captain, was dismissed for just 4 runs while representing Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy match against Railways. This was Rohit’s first Ranji Trophy appearance in over five years, and fans were hopeful of seeing a big innings from him. However, he fell cheaply, leaving his team in a tough position.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been touted as a future star of Indian cricket, also failed to make an impact in his Ranji Trophy comeback. The young opener managed just 8 runs for Mumbai before getting out, putting pressure on the middle order.

Shubman Gill, who has been in and out of the Indian team, was dismissed for a paltry 5 runs while playing for Punjab in their Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka. Gill, who was expected to lead Punjab’s batting, couldn’t deliver when it mattered the most.

Rishabh Pant, the explosive wicketkeeper-batsman, also had a forgettable return to the Ranji Trophy as he was out for just 6 runs while playing for Delhi against Tamil Nadu. Pant’s dismissal added to Delhi’s batting woes, and they were left reeling in their first innings.

Overall, it was a disappointing day for these star players as they failed to make an impact in their Ranji Trophy return. Fans will be hoping for a better performance from them in the upcoming matches to redeem themselves.

  • Rohit Sharma’s Reaction Says It All After Early Dismissal On Ranji Trophy Return – Watch

Rohit Sharma in action for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy© X (Twitter)

Rohit Sharma‘s dismal run continued on Thursday as the Indian cricket team star batter was dismissed for just 3 during the Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Jammu and Kashmir. Rohit came under a lot of fire following his disappointing outing during the Test series against Australia. He scored just 31 runs in 3 matches and following criticism from both fans as well as experts, he decided to drop himself for the final Test match in Sydney. Rohit returned to domestic cricket for the first time since 2015 but his innings was cut short as he was dismissed by Umar Nazir Mir.

It was a short-pitched delivery that caught Rohit by surprise and he ended up miscuing his shot completely. The ball went directly to Yudhvir Singh who made no mistake in completing the catch.

Yashasvi Jaiswal also failed to score big as he was dismissed early for just 5 while Ajinkya Rahane showed some promise before he was also dismissed for 12.

In Test cricket, Rohit’s recent performances have raised concerns about his form. During India’s tour of Australia, the seasoned opener managed just 31 runs in five innings across three Tests.

The 2024-25 Test season, in particular, was disappointing for Rohit. He accumulated only 164 runs in eight matches and 15 innings at an average of 10.93, with his highest score being 52–a solitary half-century against Bangladesh.

As captain, Rohit faced some significant challenges. Before the Test series against Australia, India suffered their first home Test series defeat in 12 years, losing 0-3 to New Zealand. This was also India’s first-ever whitewash in a home Test series since 2000.

After India’s 295-run victory in the first Test against Australia at Perth under the leadership of Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit rejoined the team following the birth of his second child.

  • Situation unclear about India skipper Rohit Sharma travelling to Pakistan for Champions Trophy captains event

New Delhi [India], : There is no clarity on whether India captain Rohit Sharma will travel to Pakistan for the ICC’s official captains’ call to mark the start of the 2025 Champions Trophy, according to ESPNcricinfo.

Situation unclear about India skipper Rohit Sharma travelling to Pakistan for Champions Trophy captains event

The upcoming ninth edition of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy is scheduled to take place in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates from February 19 to March 9.

The captains’ event, which typically occurs before the tournament, is tentatively planned for February 16 or 17 in Karachi. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has not yet received an official communication on the matter from the International Cricket Council , ESPNcricinfo reported.

“It [Rohit travelling to Pakistan] has not yet been discussed. It is not on the agenda yet,” Devjit Saikia, the BCCI’s newly-appointed secretary, told ESPNcricinfo.

Due to strained political relations between the two countries, India has not toured Pakistan since 2008, when they participated in the Asia Cup.

The two arch-rivals last played a bilateral series in India during the 2012-13 season, which featured white-ball matches. Since then, India and Pakistan have mostly faced each other in ICC tournaments and Asia Cups. Notably, Pakistan traveled to India for the 2016 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup.

In an official capacity, no Indian player has visited Pakistan in recent years. However, BCCI officials have traveled to Pakistan.

In 2023, BCCI president Roger Binny and vice-president Rajiv Shukla attended an official PCB dinner in Lahore during the Asia Cup. The invitation was extended by then PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf.

In a separate development, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board would comply with all jersey guidelines for the ICC Champions Trophy.

This clarification follows reports suggesting that the BCCI might exclude the tournament host, Pakistan’s name, from their jerseys, as India will play all their Champions Trophy matches in Dubai.

There has been confusion and uncertainty surrounding India’s cricket captain Rohit Sharma’s potential travel to Pakistan for the upcoming Champions Trophy captains event. Reports have been circulating suggesting that Rohit may skip the event due to security reasons and tensions between the two neighboring countries.

The event, which brings together captains from all participating teams in the Champions Trophy, is set to take place in Pakistan. However, with the current political climate and strained relations between India and Pakistan, Rohit’s participation in the event remains uncertain.

Fans and cricket enthusiasts are eagerly waiting for clarity on Rohit’s travel plans, as his presence at the event could be a significant moment for cricket diplomacy between the two nations. Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation.

  • No clarity yet on Rohit travelling to Pakistan for Champions Trophy captains event

There is no clear answer to whether India captain Rohit Sharma will travel to Pakistan for the ICC’s official captains call to ring in the 2025 Champions Trophy. The captains event, which as per practice happens in the host country, is tentatively scheduled around February 16 or 17 in Karachi, but the BCCI is yet to get any official communication on it from the ICC.

“It [Rohit travelling to Pakistan] has not yet been discussed. It is not on the agenda yet,” Devjit Saikia, the BCCI’s newly-appointed secretary, told ESPNcricinfo.

It could not be confirmed whether the BCCI would need the Indian government’s permission for Rohit to travel to Pakistan.

Due to the climate of political tension between the two countries, India and Pakistan have played no bilateral series since 2012, but continue to meet at ICC tournaments. While Pakistan have travelled to India for ICC tournaments in this period, India have not played any international cricket in Pakistan since 2008.

With the BCCI insisting that India would not travel to Pakistan for their matches, the ICC in co-ordination with the PCB, the tournament hosts, decided upon a hybrid model for ICC events until 2027, with Dubai named as the host of India’s Champions Trophy games.

While there is no recent precedent for an India player visiting Pakistan in an official capacity, there is one involving BCCI officials. In 2023, Roger Binny and Rajiv Shukla, the BCCI’s president and vice-president, travelled to Lahore for an official PCB dinner during the Asia Cup, after being invited by the then PCB chair Zaka Ashraf.

It is understood that the PCB has requested the ICC to ensure that, as per standard practice, all teams and captains are available for the Champions Trophy photoshoot, opening ceremony and other pre-tournament engagements. The ICC, it is understood, is still finalising logistics and travel dates for teams.

Incidentally, the ICC did not organise a captains event ahead of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup which was co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA. With teams playing warm-up matches in several countries, the ICC instead opted to do the official launch via a lighting projection show that featured all 20 captains beamed onto the Rockefeller Centre building in New York City. It is understood that like in the 2024 T20 World Cup, teams will have the option of playing up to two warm-up matches each depending on their arrival time for the Champions Trophy.

Saikia: ‘BCCI will follow every uniform-related ICC rule’

Saikia, meanwhile, has clarified that India will adhere to the dress code set by the ICC for the Champions Trophy, responding to media speculation that the BCCI had objected to the host nation’s name on their jersey. Player jerseys during ICC events usually include the tournament logo with the name of the tournament, host country and year below it.

“BCCI will follow every uniform-related ICC rule during Champions Trophy,” Saikia told PTI. “Whatever the other teams will do regarding the logo and dress code, we are going to follow in true letter and spirit.”

With additional reporting by Osman Samiuddin

There has been much speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s potential travel to Pakistan for the upcoming Champions Trophy captains event. Despite the event being just around the corner, there is still no clarity on whether the Indian cricket team captain will be making the trip.

Fans and cricket enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting confirmation on Rohit’s attendance at the event, as it would not only mark an important occasion for the team but also play a significant role in fostering goodwill and sportsmanship between the two neighboring countries.

While some reports suggest that the Indian cricket board is still discussing the matter and evaluating the security protocols for the trip, others remain hopeful that Rohit will be able to make it to Pakistan for the event.

As the uncertainty continues, fans are left eagerly anticipating an official announcement on Rohit’s participation in the Champions Trophy captains event, which is scheduled to take place in Pakistan in the coming days. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • India Champions Trophy squad – Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shami in India’s squad

There were injury concerns over both Bumrah and Kuldeep ahead of the selection on Saturday, with Kuldeep not having played any competitive cricket since his hernia surgery in November, while Bumrah had suffered a stress-related injury during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Kuldeep has been building up his bowling load at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and is understood to be bowling 10-12 overs at a go.
The 15-man squad will be led by Rohit Sharma, with Shubman Gill as his vice-captain, and also includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was picked for the first time in ODIs. He is likely to be the reserve opener for the Champions Trophy.

With Virat Kohli the No. 3, the middle order has the same look as the squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup with Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul retaining their spots, along with allrounders Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. Apart from Rahul, Rishabh Pant is the other wicketkeeper in the 15, preferred ahead of Sanju Samson who did not take part in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy. Washington Sundar is the fourth allrounder in the squad, which includes only four specialist bowlers.

Mohammed Shami, who was recently named in the T20I squad for the upcoming home series against England following a long injury layoff, was also named in the Champions Trophy squad. He last played international cricket at the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he was the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 24 wickets.

The final squad for the Champions Trophy must be submitted to the ICC by February 11.

India play three bilateral ODIs against England on February 6, 9 and 12 – their first 50-over games since the tour of Sri Lanka in August last year – before the Champions Trophy. India are in Group A in the Champions Trophy and begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, after which they play Pakistan on February 23, and New Zealand on March 2. India play all their matches in Dubai because their government refused to let the team travel to Pakistan.
