  • India Champions Trophy squad – Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shami in India’s squad

There were injury concerns over both Bumrah and Kuldeep ahead of the selection on Saturday, with Kuldeep not having played any competitive cricket since his hernia surgery in November, while Bumrah had suffered a stress-related injury during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Kuldeep has been building up his bowling load at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and is understood to be bowling 10-12 overs at a go.
The 15-man squad will be led by Rohit Sharma, with Shubman Gill as his vice-captain, and also includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was picked for the first time in ODIs. He is likely to be the reserve opener for the Champions Trophy.

With Virat Kohli the No. 3, the middle order has the same look as the squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup with Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul retaining their spots, along with allrounders Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. Apart from Rahul, Rishabh Pant is the other wicketkeeper in the 15, preferred ahead of Sanju Samson who did not take part in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy. Washington Sundar is the fourth allrounder in the squad, which includes only four specialist bowlers.

Mohammed Shami, who was recently named in the T20I squad for the upcoming home series against England following a long injury layoff, was also named in the Champions Trophy squad. He last played international cricket at the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he was the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 24 wickets.

The final squad for the Champions Trophy must be submitted to the ICC by February 11.

India play three bilateral ODIs against England on February 6, 9 and 12 – their first 50-over games since the tour of Sri Lanka in August last year – before the Champions Trophy. India are in Group A in the Champions Trophy and begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, after which they play Pakistan on February 23, and New Zealand on March 2. India play all their matches in Dubai because their government refused to let the team travel to Pakistan.

India squad for Champions Trophy 2025

Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill (vice-capt), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja

India has announced its squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy, and it includes some exciting young talent alongside experienced players. Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Mohammed Shami are among the players who have been named in the squad.

Bumrah, known for his deadly yorkers and ability to bowl in the death overs, will be a key player for India in the tournament. Kuldeep Yadav, with his deceptive spin and variations, will add a different dimension to India’s bowling attack.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young and talented batsman, has been rewarded for his consistent performances in domestic cricket and the IPL. His attacking style of play could prove to be a game-changer for India in crucial matches.

Mohammed Shami, with his pace and swing, will provide the much-needed experience and firepower to India’s fast bowling department. His ability to take crucial wickets at crucial moments could be vital for India’s chances in the tournament.

With a mix of youth and experience, India’s squad for the Champions Trophy looks strong and balanced. Fans will be eagerly awaiting the team’s performance in the tournament as they aim to bring home the trophy once again.

Champions Trophy News LIVE: When will BCCI announce Champions Trophy squad?

Champions Trophy News LIVE: BCCI is likely to announce the squad for upcoming Champions Trophy on January 18 or 19. The Indian cricketing board is likely trying to better gauge the extent of injuries sustained by Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav before making the final call.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, and there have been some surprises in store. Rohit Sharma has been named as the captain of the Indian team, taking over the reins from Virat Kohli.

One of the biggest shocks in the squad announcement is the omission of fast bowler Mohammed Siraj. Despite his impressive performances in recent series, Siraj has been left out of the squad for the Champions Trophy. This decision has raised eyebrows among fans and experts alike, with many questioning the selectors’ rationale behind this move.

On the other hand, there are some new faces in the squad who will be making their debut in the Champions Trophy. Young talents like Ravi Bishnoi and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been included in the team, and they will be looking to make an impact on the big stage.

Overall, the squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 looks strong and balanced, with a good mix of experience and youth. It will be interesting to see how Rohit Sharma leads the team in the tournament, which promises to be a thrilling and competitive affair. Stay tuned for more updates on the Indian team’s preparations for the Champions Trophy.

  • Second-string New Zealand look to hold off resurgent Sri Lanka as Champions Trophy looms

Second-string New Zealand look to hold off resurgent Sri Lanka as Champions Trophy looms

Where ODIs were once beloved of broadcasters, particularly during bilateral tours, they are now the format boards scramble to fit into the calendar when a major tournament is on the horizon. The Champions Trophy is roughly seven weeks away, and New Zealand have played only three ODIs in the last year. They must now hasten to find their most effective combinations, fine-tune strategy, and gain some momentum in this format. All of this, however, is made more complicated by the the fact that as many as six top players – Kane Williamson, Finn Allen, Adam Milne, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson and Tim Seifert – are away at either the Big Bash League or the SAT20.

Can Sri Lanka do it overseas?

Although Sri Lanka didn’t qualify for the Champions Trophy on account of their dismal 2023 World Cup, they seem to have turned their ODI game around in 2024. They won five out of the six series they played in 2024, including against New Zealand and India. Eleven of their 12 ODI wins last year, however, came at home, often on big-turning surfaces. Although Sri Lanka have swelled their silverware collection significantly, many fans are tempering expectations until they begin winning on the more batting-friendly surfaces they tend to encounter abroad.
Jacob Duffy has played only eight ODIs, but comes into this series having been outstanding in the T20Is. He took eight wickets and returned an economy rate of 5.50 across the three matches, and was usually tight with his lines. He has been part of New Zealand’s ODI rebuild after the 2023 World Cup, and a good series here will help push his case for a place in their XI for the Champions Trophy, even after the likes of Ferguson and Milne return. He has decent figures against Sri Lanka in this format too – he took 3 for 41 in a high-scoring ODI in Dambulla in November.
In the last three months, Mitchell Santner has taken 13 wickets in New Zealand’s spectacular demolition of India in Pune; scored 125 runs and taken seven wickets in the huge Test win over England in Hamilton; and become New Zealand’s permanent white-ball captain. For so long the allrounder who gave the side balance without setting the world alight, Santner is showing signs of maturing into an out-and-out match-winner. He will need to do some serious wrangling to get this New Zealand team Champions-Trophy-ready, however.

Will Kamindu raise his ODI game?

In Tests, he averages 74 and tends to score his runs rapidly. In this format, however, Kamindu Mendis has crossed fifty only once in 13 innings. Partly this has been because he has often batted down the order, coming in as low as No. 8 at times. But so successful has he been in Tests and so well-suited does his game seem to limited-overs cricket that there are likely thoughts within the Sri Lanka team management to push him up the order for a more permanent role.

As the ICC Champions Trophy draws near, all eyes are on the second-string New Zealand team as they face off against a resurgent Sri Lanka in their upcoming match. With key players like Kane Williamson and Trent Boult missing due to injury, the Black Caps will be relying on their depth and talent to secure a victory.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will be looking to capitalize on their recent good form and make a statement against a depleted New Zealand side. Led by the experienced campaigners like Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga, the Lions will be aiming to pull off an upset and gain momentum heading into the prestigious tournament.

The match promises to be an exciting and closely contested affair, with both teams eager to prove their worth ahead of the Champions Trophy. New Zealand will need to rely on their young guns to step up and fill the void left by their injured stars, while Sri Lanka will be looking to continue their winning streak and build confidence for the upcoming challenges.

Fans can expect a thrilling encounter as these two teams battle it out on the field, with both sides hungry for victory. Stay tuned for all the action and drama as the second-string New Zealand team look to hold off a resurgent Sri Lanka in this crucial match.

  • SA vs Pak 2024 – Pakistan’s Saim Ayub in Champions Trophy fitness race after suffering ankle fracture

SA vs Pak 2024 – Pakistan’s Saim Ayub in Champions Trophy fitness race after suffering ankle fracture

Pakistan have suffered a significant blow after Saim Ayub was ruled out for “up to six weeks” with a right ankle fracture, sustained during the first morning of the Test in Cape Town.

The diagnosis rules him out of Pakistan’s two Test matches against the West Indies later this month, as well as a tri-series against South Africa and New Zealand at home in February. It also means he is in a race against time to be fit for the Champions Trophy, which begins in Karachi in just over six weeks.

The PCB said an MRI scan conducted on Friday “confirmed the fracture, which has been immobilised in an ankle medical moon boot”. Ayub will remain with the team until the end of the Test.

Ayub had to be stretchered off the pitch in just the seventh over of the match, when Ryan Rickelton edged a delivery through the slips, sending Ayub off on a chase to deep third alongside Aamer Jamal. Jamal pulled it back in as Ayub stood poised to be the relay fielder, but lost his balance and twisted his ankle. He went down immediately and appeared in anguish holding the lower part of his leg as the physio rushed on.

Despite prolonged treatment outside the boundary line, Ayub was unable to put any weight on his right ankle, and appeared to be in tears as he was placed on to a stretcher and taken off. He was later seen on crutches in the medical boot.

The last few months have seen Ayub establish him as an all-format star for Pakistan, playing crucial roles in ODI series wins away in Australia, Zimbabwe as well as here in South Africa, where two hundreds in three matches saw him named the Player of the Series.

In an unfortunate turn of events, Pakistan’s rising star Saim Ayub is facing a race against time to be fit for the 2024 Champions Trophy clash against South Africa after suffering an ankle fracture during a training session.

Ayub, who has been in impressive form recently, was gearing up for the highly anticipated tournament when the injury occurred. The young batsman has been a key player for Pakistan in recent matches, and his absence would be a major blow to the team’s chances in the tournament.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that Ayub is undergoing intensive rehabilitation and is working tirelessly to recover in time for the crucial match against South Africa. The team management is hopeful that Ayub will be able to make a speedy recovery and be back in action for the tournament.

Fans and teammates alike are keeping their fingers crossed for Ayub’s swift recovery, as his presence in the team is crucial for Pakistan’s success in the Champions Trophy. We wish Saim Ayub a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the field soon!

  • Aus vs Ind – BGT 2024-25 – Jasprit Bumrah vs Sam Konstas continues to enliven Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Aus vs Ind – BGT 2024-25 – Jasprit Bumrah vs Sam Konstas continues to enliven Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Sam Konstas was at the centre of a fiery exchange with India’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah amid a dramatic finish to the opening day of the final Test at the SCG, which has set up another compelling duel when play resumes on Saturday.

Australia’s reply started with just 15 minutes of the day remaining, and first ball Konstas walked down the crease at Bumrah and whipped him through midwicket. Konstas then exchanged words with Bumrah before what became the penultimate ball of the day after Usman Khawaja had pulled away from the strike, seemingly to try and eat up time to ensure there wouldn’t be another over.

Konstas turned to Bumrah and appeared to say something, which prompted umpire Sharfuddoula to step in. The next delivery passed through outside off stump. Then, with the final ball of the day, Bumrah had Khawaja edging to second slip, and immediately turned and locked eyes with Konstas at the non-striker’s end and took a couple of steps towards him, before being joined by several team-mates, including Virat Kohli, in exuberant celebration.

“I feel they had a little chit-chat,” Rishabh Pant said of the exchange. “They wanted to waste some time. I feel that’s the reason he had a conversation with Jassi [Bumrah]. He [Konstas] said something, I didn’t hear it, but I feel that’s the only thing which he wanted to do to just waste some time so we don’t bowl one more over.”

The India players were animated as they left the field, having a few minutes earlier been bowled out for 185, while Konstas walked off a few metres behind Khawaja, with Australia 9 for 1.

“It was an interesting one,” Beau Webster said of how Australia’s innings started. “I was sitting next to Heady [Travis Head] in the rooms watching on the TV and the first ball he [Konstas] ran down and clipped him over midwicket. There almost wasn’t surprise anymore, it was like there he is, he’s away.

“Sammy’s a very confident young man, it’s what they do these days, those youngsters, they get after it and put themselves out there. He’s got all the skills and all the talent to back it up so hopefully he has a really good day tomorrow and puts a few runs on the board.”

Konstas’ selection in the latter part of the series has had a dramatic impact. He struck 60 off 65 balls in his debut innings at the MCG, where he scooped Bumrah on a regular basis, and in the process of his stay was shoulder-barged by Kohli between overs. Bumrah struck back against Konstas in the second innings by removing him for 8.

In the field, Konstas was heavily engaged with the packed MCG crowd and in the final innings, as Australia pushed for victory, was a vocal presence around the bat.

“He’s playing with a lot of flair,” Scott Boland told Fox Cricket. “He’s definitely under their skin. You can see that in the last few moments there.”

Speaking ahead of the SCG Test, Konstas’ mentor Shane Watson said he had been surprised by how outgoing the 19-year-old had been.

“My experience of dealing and working with Sam has been a very quiet, reserved personality,” he said. “[He’s] a very deep thinker and certainly not an extrovert. But obviously what we saw in the Test match is that he absolutely is a showman.”

Bumrah’s late strike will raise India’s hopes that he has one more huge performance in him to cap an outstanding series with the visitors needing to win to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“Think there’s definitely a method to go about batting on this wicket, but Jasprit is a world-class bowler and no doubt he’s going to challenge our whole batting group,” Webster said. “He’s phenomenal with his lengths and lines, it is going to be tough on a wicket that will offer a fair bit for him.”

Pant acknowledged India would have liked a few more runs but was confident in India being able to stay competitive in the match.

“I think I wouldn’t say it’s a par score, I think anything over 220 to 250 would be a par score,” he said. “But still a very competitive score because the way ball is moving now I think there’s a lot of help for the bowler and hopefully we can capitalise on that.”

Andrew McGlashan is a deputy editor at ESPNcricinfo

The highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy between Australia and India has once again lived up to its reputation as one of the most fiercely contested rivalries in cricket. The battle between two of the world’s best fast bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah and Sam Konstas, has been a highlight of the series so far.

Both Bumrah and Konstas have been in scintillating form, consistently troubling the opposition batsmen with their pace, accuracy, and ability to extract movement off the pitch. Their duels have captured the imagination of fans and pundits alike, with each delivery from either bowler being scrutinized and analyzed for its potential impact on the game.

Bumrah, known for his unorthodox action and deadly yorkers, has been a thorn in the side of the Australian batsmen, picking up crucial wickets at key moments in the match. Konstas, on the other hand, has impressed with his raw pace and aggressive approach, constantly testing the Indian batters with his intimidating short-pitched deliveries.

As the series progresses, all eyes will be on Bumrah and Konstas as they continue to push each other to new heights and strive to outdo one another in what has become a personal battle within the larger context of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The rivalry between these two fast bowlers has added an extra layer of excitement and drama to an already enthralling series, and fans can’t wait to see what twists and turns await in the remaining matches.

  • Luke Littler all-but guaranteed to win bizarre trophy even if he loses to Michael van Gerwen

Luke Littler all-but guaranteed to win bizarre trophy even if he loses to Michael van Gerwen

Darts teenage sensation Luke Littler is all-but guaranteed to win the ‘Ballon d’Art’ award even if he loses to Michael van Gerwen in the World Championship final.

Ahead of the showpiece event on Friday night, Littler has hit 180 an astonishing 64 times at the Alexandra Palace.

That puts him 21 ahead of Van Gerwen and Callan Rydz, all-but guaranteeing Littler the most for the tournament.

In fact, the 17-year-old can set the record for the most maximums ever at one World Championship if he lands 19 against Van Gerwen.

That would see him overtake Michael Smith, who hit 83 during the 2022 event.

Last year, sponsors Paddy Power introduced the ‘Ballon d’Art’ award, which goes to the player who gets the most 180s.

The betting company have teamed up with Prostate UK for their BIGGER 180 campaign, which sees £1,000 donated to the charity for each maximum.

An incredible £60,000 also goes to Prostate UK for every nine-darter.

After reaching the final last year, Littler was left to settle for second place when facing world number one Luke Humphries, who also took home the Ballon d’Art.

The award – which is a nod to football’s famous Ballon d’Or – technically translates to ‘Art Balloon’ – making it the subject of ridicule among fans.

The trophy is also absurdly large – but it is all in the name of charity.

Speaking on a video on TikTok last month, Littler revealed his darts have a ‘longer point’ on them which helps him land more 180s than his rivals.

Luke Humphries won the first-ever Ballon d'Art, awarded by Paddy Power

“I have a longer point because when my darts sit in the board, there’s more room of getting a 180 or a 140, whereas if you’ve got small points they’ll go through the board and then it’s harder to get a 180.”

His technique clearly pays off too, hitting 19 180s against Stephen Bunting in a 6-1 victory to seal his place in the final.

His opponent Van Gerwen also secured a 6-1 win, beating Chris Dobey in the semis.

Heading into the final, Luke ‘The Nuke’ Littler is now the favourite to lift the Sid Waddell Trophy, at just 17 years of age.

Van Gerwen is currently the youngest PDC World Champion to date, winning aged 24 in 2014, but Littler is now just a few throws away from that feat himself.

Littler’s rise to stardom has not only planted himself in the centre of the media’s attention over the last year, but has also skyrocketed the popularity of darts as a sport.

Speaking ahead of the final, Littler said: “It’s been an amazing tournament so far. People would say I was looking at the title throughout the tournament.

“After the first game against Ryan Meikle, I have just beat what was in front of me.

“I’ve played a lot better. I’ve won plenty of titles leading up to this. That’s what we do.

“There are majors all year around and I can’t wait for tomorrow night.”

The 2024/25 PDC World Darts Championship final will take place tonight on Friday, January 3.

It will be held at Ally Pally in north London and walk-ons will start from around 8.10pm with the action slated to get under way at 8.30pm.

Tune into talkSPORT for coverage of the 2025 PDC World Darts Championship final from 7pm on Friday, as we bring you exclusive live commentary from Alexandra Palace. Listen via our web player, app, on DAB, or through your smart speaker.

Luke Littler, the dark horse of the darts world, has all but guaranteed himself a bizarre trophy even if he loses to the formidable Michael van Gerwen. Littler, known for his unorthodox playing style and unpredictable antics on the oche, has captured the hearts of fans and critics alike with his fearless approach to the game.

While van Gerwen may be the favorite to win the upcoming match, Littler’s sheer determination and unique skill set make him a force to be reckoned with. And even if he doesn’t come out on top, Littler is sure to walk away with the coveted “Most Entertaining Player” trophy, a title he has unofficially claimed in the hearts of darts enthusiasts around the world.

So, while the outcome of the match may be uncertain, one thing is for sure – Luke Littler is a player to watch, and win or lose, he is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression on the darts world.

Having dealt with a gruesome car accident, a red cherry hurtling into his body is perhaps the least of Rishabh Pant’s worries. He battled hard against the Australian attack and was India’s top-scorer with a 40 in the fifth Test that began at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday (January 3, 2025).

Struck eight times on his torso, Pant competed hard and was one of the bright spots in a dreary Indian first innings. Reacting to the tough outing, he said: “Definitely it’s painful but sometimes you have to do the hard work for the team and that’s okay. I was not thinking about where I got hit but just played the ball to the best of my abilities.” Later he added: “I think this is the first time I have been hit so much.”

Being in proximity when Jasprit Bumrah and Sam Konstas exchanged words, Pant explained: “They wanted to waste some time. I feel that’s the reason. He had a conversation with Jassi (Bumrah). He said something. I didn’t hear. He wanted to waste some time so we don’t bowl one more over.”

Queried about his pitch-impressions, Pant replied: “It was a little bit tough pitch. The ball was doing off the wicket quite a bit. I wouldn’t say 185 is a par-score. But I think anything over 220-250 would be a par-score, but still a very competitive score because the way the ball is moving, there is a lot of help for the bowlers.”

And on the Washington Sundar dismissal, Pant said: “I feel whatever decision we make on the field, it has to stay with the on-field umpire. Until and unless it’s (evidence) so conclusive to change the decision, I think we should stay with the on-field umpire. Technology can be a little better I guess.”

    Touch of emotion, says Pant

Rishabh Pant admitted to a touch of emotion within the ranks when news about Rohit Sharma missing the fifth Test spread. “He is our captain and obviously there will be some emotion. As for the decision, it was a management call so I was not part of that conversation so I can’t explain anything other than that,” Pant told the media here on Friday.

Asked for his inputs on Jasprit Bumrah as captain, Pant said: “Mostly his message is be positive all the time and don’t think about what has already happened, just give your best on the field. That’s what you want from your captain.”

Australia bowl India out to seal dramatic win

Australia beat India by 184 runs in a thrilling conclusion to the fourth Test in Melbourne to take a 2-1 lead going into the final match of the series.

India were set a target of 340 in 92 overs and batted cautiously throughout the innings with little ambition to chase an unlikely victory.

But a sensational bowling performance in the evening session saw Australia take the final seven wickets for just 34 runs as India were bowled out for 155 in the final hour.

The tourists slipped to 33-3 but opener Yashasvi Jaiswal looked intent on securing a hard-fought draw for India before he was caught behind off Pat Cummins for 84 from 208 balls with 21 overs remaining.

Jaiswal had battled through a wicketless afternoon session alongside wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who made 30 from 104 balls – but they were the only men to pass double figures.

Pant eventually ran out of patience and slogged Travis Head to long-on for another wasteful dismissal and his departure after tea sparked the collapse.

Cummins and Scott Boland finished with three wickets each while spinner Nathan Lyon took two after his batting heroics, falling for 41 in the second over of the day as Australia were all out for 234.

He was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah, who finished with 5-57 in another scintillating performance.

The series concludes in Sydney from 2 January, where a win would secure Australia’s place in the World Test Championship final alongside South Africa.
