Update: Leon County Schools closing Friday
The Leon County School District has decided to follow the lead of other institutions in the city and cease operations Friday as icy roads still pose a threat to transportation arrangements.
The district sent communications to parents Thursday afternoon informing them of the closures.
“All LCS schools and district offices will remain closed tomorrow,” a text from the district read to parents.
Wakulla County Schools, meanwhile, announced they would reopen, though they said buses may be delayed “to prioritize student safety.”
“Thank you to all of our community partners who ensured we are able to safely reopen schools. All schools had power restored in under 24 hours, and as of this afternoon, roadways are sufficiently clear for transportation,” the district wrote on social media. “Please exercise caution in the morning as some limbs are still lower than before the storm, and there are many fallen branches just off roadways.”
Jefferson County Public Schools will also be closed through Friday.
“After spending some time traveling & assessing local roads, we still have some places where ice is a potential issue. We also have areas where snow & ice are beginning to melt which could possibly refreeze tonight, resulting in dangerous driving conditions,” the district wrote on a social media post.

“With unprecedented road closures throughout the region due to icy conditions, Florida State University’s Tallahassee will cancel classes and suspend normal business operations for Friday, Jan. 24. This includes the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering,” FSU wrote on X.
“The university expects to resume classes and normal business operations at 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27.”
