  • Why Draymond Green isn’t surprised of Doug Christie’s Kings turnaround – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Doug Christie’s recent success with the Kings isn’t surprising to a familiar NBA rival.

On the latest episode of his “The Draymond Green Show” podcast, Golden State Warriors veteran forward Draymond Green, Sacramento’s foe since the team’s first-round NBA playoff series in 2023, revealed why Doug Christie is succeeding as Kings interim coach.

“I’m not surprised at all,” Green said. “I know what they’re capable of, and I think Doug has probably made small fixes with practice and more Malik Monk minutes.

“The whole sixth man thing is cool, but all of a sudden you’re down and need to get your best guns on the floor. I think he’s done some minor tweaks that were right there in their face. But, most importantly, you got guys that are working hard for you.

“And that is the challenge in the NBA as a coach: just to make sure that you have guys that are coming out to play hard. When you got guys that are playing for you, that goes a long way.”

In conversation with new co-host and former Warriors guard Baron Davis, Green also pointed out what might have led to former Kings coach Mike Brown’s shocking dismissal in late December.

And, no, Green didn’t get behind the exhausted rumor of Brown falling out of favor with star guard De’Aaron Fox.

“I’m not very surprised because I felt like Mike [Brown] kind of lost the guys,” Green told Davis. “I think a large part of losing the guys was the amount they were practicing.

“I think a lot of guys started feeling a certain way about that. They got talent. That’s the same team that took us to Game 7 a couple of years ago but added DeMar DeRozan. Like, obviously, that should help.”

Since taking over for Brown, Christie, a former player and assistant coach for the Kings, has led Sacramento to a 9-2 record, catapulting his team to eighth in the Western Conference.

If the Kings keep at it, Green is convinced there’s no reason a franchise icon like Christie won’t lose the interim tag

.“So, Doug, keep it up,” Green concluded. “He’s going to find himself with a job moving forward, not just as the interim coach of the Sacramento Kings.

“One thing is for certain: he’s put the time in. When it comes to that organization, Doug Christie has put the time in, probably more than anyone involved with the organization, including the ownership group. If he keeps winning and doing what he’s doing, he’s going to have himself a job moving forward, and it will be well deserved.”

  • Can Santa Clara make NCAA Tournament in turnaround?

It’s probably tempting for Carlos Stewart Jr. and his Santa Clara teammates to look back at what might have been early this season. The Broncos began the year at 3-5 with four defeats that easily could have gone the other way:

    — An 81-74 loss to Arizona State in the Nov. 8 opener in which Santa Clara had the lead with 3 1/2 minutes to play

    — An 88-80 overtime loss to North Dakota State on Nov. 13 when the Broncos led by five with less than 10 seconds left in regulation

    — A 71-69 home loss to Stanford on Nov. 23 in a game that was tied with 8 seconds left

    — And a 76-69 neutral-site defeat to Washington on Nov. 29 where the margin was three points with 11 seconds to play

“That’s a painful walk down memory lane,” Broncos coach Herb Sendek said.

“Lessons learned with those games,” Stewart said. “Obviously, we can’t go back now.”

The Broncos are 9-1 since November, flipping their season to 12-6 overall and 4-1 to start West Coast Conference play. On track for a fourth straight 20-win season, they hit the road this week, facing Loyola Marymount on Thursday in Los Angeles before trekking to Spokane, Washington, to duel 16th-ranked Gonzaga on Saturday.

The team’s only setback over the past 10 games was a 97-94 overtime loss at USF on Dec. 30, which would have been a victory if not for a missed free throw with no time left in the second half.

“At this point, we control our own destiny,” Stewart said. “We’re in a great position. We just have to take advantage of it.”

The destiny the Broncos want to create is a return to the NCAA Tournament, something Santa Clara has not achieved since the days of Steve Nash in the mid-1990s. “That would be amazing,” Stewart said.

So when Santa Clara trailed 28-21 at halftime of Saturday’s home rematch against San Francisco, Stewart took it upon himself to do something about it. After going scoreless in the opening 20 minutes, he shot 9 for 10 from the field and put up 25 points in the second half as the Broncos outscored USF 56-26 and roared to a 77-54 victory.

“At halftime, I made a pact with our team that I didn’t want us to lose, didn’t want to let my team down,” Stewart said. “So I had to come out with a whole different mindset, which is going to carry over the rest of the season because I don’t feel like going back.

“That’s who I am, an aggressive player, an aggressive scorer, an aggressive defender. I’ve got to be consistently that.”

The Broncos are a different team than they were two months ago, averaging more than 85 points over the past 10 games.

And they’ve figured out how to win the close ones. At Oregon State last Thursday, they escaped with an 82-81 overtime win when senior guard Tyeree Bryan dashed in from the 3-point arc for a game-winning tip-in with 3.6 seconds left.

Deep and balanced, the Broncos have won with five different players leading the team in scoring over the past 10.

French-born senior guard Adama-Alpha Bal, a first-team All-WCC pick a year ago, leads the Broncos with a 13.7 scoring average. Christoph Tilly, a 7-foot junior center from Germany, is averaging 13.1 points in the past nine games. Bryan provides 10.1 points per outing.

With the Santa Clara Broncos currently sitting at 11-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play, their chances of making the NCAA Tournament seem to be on the rise. After a disappointing season last year, where they finished with a 12-8 record and missed out on the Big Dance, the Broncos have shown significant improvement this season.

Led by standout guards Jalen Williams and Keshawn Justice, Santa Clara has been able to compete with some of the top teams in the West Coast Conference. Their recent victories over ranked opponents like Saint Mary’s and San Francisco have put them in a good position to make a run at the NCAA Tournament.

With a strong finish to the regular season and a good showing in the conference tournament, the Broncos could potentially secure an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. However, they will need to continue their winning ways and show consistency down the stretch in order to solidify their spot in the Big Dance.

Santa Clara fans are hopeful that this could be the year that their team finally breaks through and makes a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Only time will tell if the Broncos can make it happen, but one thing is for certain – they are certainly on the right track to make a turnaround and potentially secure a spot in the Big Dance.

Hindenburg short Carvana, calls turnaround ‘a mirage’

Carvana’s (CVNA) stock spiked 284% in 2024 despite facing bankruptcy risks in 2022 and 2023, with “investors believing the company’s worst days are behind it,” Hindenburg Research stated in a newly-published short report. However, the firm’s research shows “Carvana’s turnaround is a mirage,” according to the firm, which says its research “uncovered $800 million in loan sales to a suspected undisclosed related party, along with details on how accounting manipulation and lax underwriting have fueled temporary reported income growth – all while insiders cash out billions in stock.” The short-seller adds: “Even before considering the findings of our investigation, Carvana is exorbitantly valued, trading at an 845% higher sales multiple relative to online car peers CarMax and AutoNation, and a 754% premium on a forward earnings basis. The company has ~$4.8 billion in net debt and is junk-rated by ratings agencies… Overall, we think the Garcias will leave shareholders with nothing. At any point in Carvana’s two incredible stock runs, it could have raised significant capital and de-risked its balance sheet.”

Don’t Miss Our New Year’s Offers:

Hindenburg Research, a renowned short-selling firm, has recently released a scathing report on Carvana, a popular online platform for buying and selling used cars. The report, titled “Carvana: Turnaround or Mirage?”, questions the company’s recent success and paints a bleak picture of its future prospects.

In the report, Hindenburg accuses Carvana of engaging in deceptive practices to inflate its stock price and mislead investors. The firm points to several red flags, including questionable accounting practices, misleading marketing tactics, and a lack of transparency in its operations.

Hindenburg also highlights Carvana’s reliance on debt to fund its rapid expansion, warning that the company may be on the brink of financial collapse. The firm predicts that Carvana’s stock price will plummet in the near future as investors realize the true extent of its problems.

Carvana has vehemently denied Hindenburg’s allegations, calling them “baseless and misleading”. The company insists that it is on track for continued growth and profitability, and that its turnaround efforts are indeed paying off.

Investors are now left to decide whether to believe Carvana’s optimistic outlook or heed the warnings of Hindenburg Research. As the debate rages on, one thing is certain: the future of Carvana remains uncertain, and only time will tell whether its turnaround is real or merely a mirage.

  • Chargers celebrate playoff berth, turnaround under Harbaugh

Chargers celebrate playoff berth, turnaround under Harbaugh

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — In Week 14 last season, the Los Angeles Chargers were surrounded by fans in their home stadium chanting for the firing of then-coach Brandon Staley amid a disappointing season.

A little over a year later, the Chargers saw what that felt like from the other side.

As Los Angeles steamrolled New England 40-7 on Saturday to clinch a playoff spot, the small contingent of Patriots fans left at Gillette Stadium began to chant “Fire Mayo,” referring to Patriots coach Jerod Mayo. It was just the second time New England had lost by 30 or more points at home this century.

Saturday’s win was the Chargers’ best performance of the season and perhaps the clearest example of just how much this team has changed in a year under coach Jim Harbaugh.

“It feels good to be playing meaningful football,” safety Derwin James said. “I remember being on my couch last year just wishing and wondering, ‘Man, like, what I need to do differently to be able to make sure I don’t get the same feeling this year, man?’ And I’m just happy, proud of the guys that put forth the effort to help us get here.”

James had one of his best games, sacking Patriots quarterback Drake Maye twice to bring his season total to a career-best 5.5. The defense shut down a New England offense that had scored 21 points on one of the NFL’s best teams last weekend in the Buffalo Bills. The Patriots’ only touchdown Saturday came in the second quarter when Maye connected with wide receiver DeMario Douglas for a 36-yard score.

The Chargers’ defense pressured Maye throughout the day, sacking him four times and pressuring him on 11 of his 31 dropbacks (35%).

“Our team played one of our best games defensively,” Harbaugh said.

The Chargers were almost perfect on offense, punting just twice and scoring a season high in points. Justin Herbert finished 26-for-38 with 281 passing yards and three touchdowns before being pulled along with all the starters early in the fourth quarter. Herbert also passed Peyton Manning for the most passing yards in a player’s first five seasons in the NFL.

Herbert’s favorite target Saturday was rookie Ladd McConkey, who caught eight passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns. McConkey’s big day helped him break the Chargers’ single-season rookie receptions and receiving yards records held by Keenan Allen.

It was one of the best games of McConkey’s first year, coming against the team the Chargers traded up with to select him in the draft with the 34th pick. McConkey had more receiving yards Saturday than the two receivers the Patriots selected with the picks they got in the draft-day deal, Ja’Lynn Polk (87 yards) and Javon Baker (0).

“No extra motivation, nothing like that,” McConkey said. “When I got drafted, I was excited to get drafted. … I’m right where I’m supposed to be. So it’s a cool moment.”

Last season, the Chargers didn’t look like a team a year away from playoff contention, winning just five games and losing many of their best players. However, the team expected a significant turnaround once it hired Harbaugh, who was many of the players’ first choice for the job.

“It was guys praying and hoping for Jim to be our head coach,” linebacker Daiyan Henley said of players’ mindsets during the coaching search. “We saw Jim as a winner. Even though he was in college, he was a winner in college. We also knew his history with the 49ers. He’s a winner everywhere he’s been, and we just wanted that mentality and here he is. And exactly what we thought he was is exactly who he is.”

Aside from a loud embrace between Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz, the celebrations were somewhat muted in the locker room. Multiple Chargers said they were looking forward to getting the team’s 11th win next week and making a deep playoff push.

“I’ve got to have a chance to win a Super Bowl, and that’s what we’re going to do now,” running back J.K. Dobbins said.

“We don’t care what seed we is. We don’t care where we got to go,” James said. “We know we want to finish all our games. Eleven wins sounds better than 10 wins. And it don’t matter what seed we is. We know for our ultimate goal we gotta go through everybody, so, man, we ready.”

Saturday’s victory came at a cost for the Chargers, who lost wide receiver Joshua Palmer and safety Elijah Molden to injury.

Palmer injured his heel and was in a walking boot after the game. Molden suffered a broken leg when he collided with James late in the contest and will miss the remainder of the season, a source told ESPN, confirming news first reported by Fox Sports.

Molden, who was carted off the field, took to Instagram to announce his season was over but didn’t detail the injury.

“Grateful God placed me here in LA with this team!” Molden said in his post. “Most fun I’ve ever had playing the game since I was a little kid. Lot more plays to be made in the future but best believe that! 22 out Bolts headed to the playoffs.”

The Chargers will play the Las Vegas Raiders to finish their regular season next week. With a win over the Raiders and a Steelers loss, the Chargers can move up to the No. 5 seed in the AFC.

The Los Angeles Chargers have officially clinched a spot in the playoffs, marking a remarkable turnaround under head coach John Harbaugh.

After a rocky start to the season, the Chargers have surged in the second half, winning key games and securing a playoff berth in the highly competitive AFC West. Harbaugh’s leadership and strategic coaching have been instrumental in guiding the team to this point, instilling a winning mentality and fostering a strong team culture.

The Chargers’ success this season is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players, coaches, and staff who have all contributed to the team’s impressive turnaround. Fans are excited to see what this talented team can achieve in the playoffs and are hopeful that they can make a deep run in the postseason.

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Chargers on their playoff berth and their incredible season under the guidance of John Harbaugh. The future looks bright for this team, and fans can’t wait to see what they can accomplish in the playoffs. #BoltUp #PlayoffsBound #HarbaughEffect
