  • Lakers’ LeBron James, Bronny James reportedly turned down Skills Challenge invite

LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, turned down the chance to make history again. The two declined to compete in the 2025 Kia Skills Challenge at NBA All-Star weekend, according to league insider Chris Haynes. They would’ve been the first father-son duo to compete in the Skills Challenge.

The report also noted that the younger James did not accept an invitation to join the Rising Stars team as a G League player. San Francisco, home of the Golden State Warriors, will host this year’s NBA All-Star weekend.

‘It was a special moment’ — Magic Johnson shares his thoughts on LeBron & Bronny James playing together for the first time

The Jameses first made history in the Lakers’ season opener, the first time that a father and son played together in the same NBA game.

Los Angeles selected Bronny James with the No. 55 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft out of USC. He has appeared in 11 NBA games this season, averaging just 2.3 minutes. He has been up and down between the Los Angeles Lakers and their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers.

[Related: Everything to know about the 2025 NBA All-Star Game]

In seven G League games, the younger James has played 26.9 minutes per contest and averaged 13.4 points, 3.9 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game, while shooting 36.6/21.2/66.7.

Meanwhile, the 40-year-old James is averaging 23.7 points, 9.0 assists and 7.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 51.3/39.8/76.3. He was named an All-Star for a record 21st time Thursday.

The Lakers entered their Thursday night matchup against the Boston Celtics at 23-18, good for the fifth seed in the Western Conference.

According to recent reports, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, have both declined invitations to participate in the NBA All-Star Skills Challenge.

While LeBron has previously participated in the event and has showcased his impressive dribbling and passing skills, it seems that he has chosen to focus on resting and preparing for the second half of the NBA season.

As for Bronny, the talented high school basketball player has decided to prioritize his high school team and upcoming games over participating in the Skills Challenge.

Although fans would have loved to see the father-son duo compete in the event, it’s understandable that they have chosen to prioritize other commitments. We can only hope to see them showcase their skills on the court in other ways in the future.

  • New Michigan law requires destruction of guns turned in during community buybacks

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — State police in Michigan will be required to destroy guns collected during community buybacks or other efforts, under legislation signed into law Wednesday by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

State police in 2024 acknowledged that a previous disposal method destroyed only the frame or receiver of the firearm. A private company was recycling and selling the other parts, The New York Times reported.

State police last March announced that they would destroy entire guns turned over by local police departments. Now that policy has been written into law.

Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.

“Our current practice of destroying all parts of the firearm will remain the standard now and for the future,” said Col. James Grady II, director of the state police.

State police handled more than 11,000 guns in 2023, spokesperson Shanon Banner said.

The Rev. Chris Yaw of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Southfield said gun destruction after buybacks is what “Michiganders want and expect.”

Yaw’s church in suburban Detroit has collected hundreds of guns in exchange for gift cards to area stores. He said the line of cars was 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) long during an event in 2022.

Recently, a new law in Michigan has been passed requiring the destruction of guns turned in during community buyback events. This law aims to prevent these firearms from being resold and potentially ending up back on the streets.

While some may argue that destroying these guns is a waste of resources, supporters of the law believe it is a necessary step in reducing gun violence and promoting safety in our communities.

Critics of the law argue that it infringes on the rights of gun owners and could potentially discourage individuals from participating in future buyback events. However, proponents argue that the potential benefits of removing these guns from circulation outweigh any potential drawbacks.

Overall, this new law represents a step towards creating safer communities in Michigan and demonstrates the state’s commitment to gun control and violence prevention.

  • The Hollow Knight: Silksong ARG turned out to be us clutching at straws, but dev says: “the game is real, progressing and will release”

We’ve been fooled again, folks. What we thought were Hollow Knight: Silksong clues being left by one of the devs turned out to be a “nothingburger,” but the game is still in development.

One of the devs changed their profile picture and name on Twitter, and it seemed like they were leaving clues that there would be more information about the game revealed during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct in April.

After months of speculation and anticipation surrounding the Hollow Knight: Silksong ARG, it seems that fans may have been grasping at straws. The alternate reality game, which was believed to be dropping hints and clues about the highly anticipated sequel to the beloved indie game Hollow Knight, ultimately led to dead ends and false leads.

However, in a recent statement from Team Cherry, the developers behind Hollow Knight: Silksong, reassured fans that the game is indeed real, progressing, and will eventually release. While the ARG may have been a misstep in terms of building hype and engagement, it seems that the team is hard at work behind the scenes to deliver a game that will meet and exceed fans’ expectations.

So, while the ARG may have left some feeling disappointed and frustrated, it’s important to remember that the end goal is still in sight. Hollow Knight: Silksong is on its way, and fans can rest assured that their patience will be rewarded with a game that is sure to be worth the wait.

  • How Chad Powers creator Michael Waldron turned the skit into a TV hit

Chad Powers was introduced to the world in September 2022 in a sketch starring Eli Manning for Omaha Productions. The premise of the gag was simple: what would walk-on tryouts at Penn State be like for the two-time Super Bowl champion Manning donning a hilarious — if not obvious — disguise?

This fall, the concept of Chad Powers is back, thanks to the co-creator team of Michael Waldron (Loki) and Glen Powell (Twisters). This time, he has an actual story and a new actor behind the makeup.

This new version of Chad Powers hopes to take viewers on a humorous (and likely emotional) journey.

Powell will play Russ Holiday, a college quarterback whose questionable decision-making derails his career and forces him to find an alternate way to keep playing.

Both Waldron and Powell are huge college football fans — the former went to Georgia and the latter is second only to Matthew McConaughey in Texas football fandom — so the partnership was a natural fit.

Despite wanting to work with each other, however, both Waldron and Powell had a similar reaction when pitched the idea of adapting the Manning skit.

“That’s insane. What do you mean?” Waldron said in a recent interview with For The Win. “What do you mean, adapt that? Then, as we really started thinking about it, we actually got quite, quite excited.”

With the massive success of Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, which was based off of a 2013 NBC Sports commercial, it’s not unheard of to extrapolate a small skit into a huge hit. Waldron also mentioned filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as inspirations — namely for the duo’s work on The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street — in taking something that really shouldn’t work and making it into something people truly love.

Waldron was dedicated to ensuring the actual football in this football show looked good and was as realistic as possible. Chad Powers is being made with the support of ESPN, giving it an extra layer of realism and allowing them to film in places like Sanford Stadium in Athens. Steve Zahn, who plays Powers’ coach in the show, shadowed Kentucky football head coach Mark Stoops.

“It was like, we can’t be the college football show where the college football looks awful. It has to look awesome,” Waldron said. “Our aspiration was, this should be the best football anybody’s ever seen.” The veteran Marvel Studios writer attributed the top-notch football renderings to set consultants, scene choreographers and extras. Oh, and Powell.

“Frustratingly good” is how Waldron described Powell’s football prowess, adding that the Hit Man star worked diligently with trainers and football consultants to look as convincing as possible.

“He’s a super handsome dude, incredibly pleasant. He’s also a great writer. He’s also a terrific writer. His family is lovely,” Waldron said. “Then he’s just got a great arm. I’m like, God, man. Leave some for the for the rest of us.”

Chad Powers is expected to debut this fall on Hulu.

Chad Powers, the brainchild of Michael Waldron, has taken the TV world by storm with its hilarious and relatable humor. From a simple skit to a full-fledged television hit, Waldron’s vision and creativity have propelled Chad Powers to success.

In a recent interview, Waldron revealed his inspiration for creating Chad Powers and how he turned it into a TV hit. “I wanted to create a character that was a mix of absurdity and relatability,” Waldron explained. “Chad Powers is that guy that we all know – he’s the friend who always has a crazy story to tell, the one who never seems to take life too seriously.”

Waldron’s ability to tap into the universal experiences of friendship, love, and everyday struggles has resonated with audiences around the world. The show’s witty dialogue, quirky characters, and unexpected plot twists keep viewers coming back for more.

With Chad Powers becoming a household name, Waldron’s talent for storytelling and comedic timing has solidified his place as a rising star in the entertainment industry. From a simple skit to a TV hit, Waldron’s journey with Chad Powers is a testament to the power of creativity and perseverance.

  • Damson Idris Reponds To Rumor That He Turned Down Marvel’s Offer To Play New T’Challa

As expected, the recent report that Marvel Studios’ is currently searching for an actor to take over from the late Chadwick Boseman as a new take on T’Challa in the MCU has led to several names being churned out by the rumor mill.

Damson Idris, the up-and-coming British Snowfall star who was reportedly up for the role of John Stewart in Lanterns prior to Aaron Pierre landing the gig, was said to be one of the actors who passed on the opportunity to play T’Challa, and was asked about the rumor on social media.

Idris jokingly responded (though not everyone picked up on the sarcasm) that he also “turned down 007, A co-lead film with Daniel Day Lewis and an Eddie Murphy biopic.”

Pierre is also said to have been approached for this part, and we’ve heard that he was the actor who passed that was mentioned in the original report. If true, it could have been due to his Lanterns commitments, but that may not be the only factor.

Although the initial rumor suggested that Kevin Feige and co. were searching for a new actor to play a variant of the same character Boseman portrayed, it seems more likely that the studio is actually in the process of casting an actor for the role of the original T’Challa’s son (Toussaint, aka Prince T’Challa), who was introduced at the end of Wakanda Forever.

Whatever the case may be, it appears quite a few actors believe that accepting the role would be akin to replacing Boseman, and either feel it would be disrespectful to the beloved actor, or simply don’t want the responsibility of filling those particular shoes.

Whoever ends up accepting the role, the new T’Challa is expected to debut in one of the upcoming Avengers movies before going on to play a bigger part in Black Panther 3.

During a 2022 interview with the New York Times, director Ryan Coogler admitted that he’d be glad to stay on this franchise for “as long as folks will have me.”

“I feel blessed that I have the opportunity to work on these movies, bro. When I got asked to do the first one, it was like a moving train. I thank God every day that I was able to jump on it and meet these people, these actors, and to meet Chadwick during some of the last years of his life. I’ll do it as long as folks will have me. But I think it’s bigger than just me or Joe. Between the first and second movie, we made $2 billion at the box office, which is what matters the most to corporations. So I hope that it continues, man. I hope people are still making movies about Wakanda long after we’re gone.”

Who would you like to see suit-up as the MCU’s new Black Panther?

In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba), fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda. Introducing Tenoch Huerta as Namor, king of a hidden undersea nation, the film also stars Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena, and Alex Livanalli.

British actor Damson Idris recently found himself at the center of a major rumor circulating in Hollywood circles. Reports suggested that Idris had turned down an offer from Marvel Studios to play the new T’Challa in the upcoming “Black Panther” sequel.

However, Idris took to social media to set the record straight and address the rumors head-on. In a heartfelt post, he clarified that he had never been approached by Marvel for the role and that the rumors were completely false.

Idris expressed his admiration for the character of T’Challa and the legacy left behind by the late Chadwick Boseman. He emphasized his respect for Boseman’s portrayal and stated that he would never seek to replace him in the iconic role.

Despite the rumors, Idris remains focused on his career and expressed his gratitude for the support of his fans. He assured everyone that he is excited about the future of the “Black Panther” franchise and hopes to see it continue to honor Boseman’s legacy in a meaningful way.

In conclusion, Damson Idris’s response to the rumor serves as a reminder of the importance of accuracy in reporting and the respect that should be shown to both actors and the characters they portray. Fans can rest assured that Idris remains committed to his craft and looks forward to the future of his career in Hollywood.

The ‘absurd’ way Alex Michelsen’s journey has turned out

American reflects on start of his second full season on Tour

    January 17, 2025

Alex Michelsen has reached the third round of the Australian Open in two consecutive years.

    Peter Staples/ATP Tour

Alex Michelsen has reached the third round of the Australian Open in two consecutive years.
    By Andrew Eichenholz

It is easy to forget that Alex Michelsen is only 20 years old.

The energetic American has already played in two editions of the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF, made three ATP Tour finals, is into the Top 50 of the PIF ATP Rankings and is about to compete in the third round of the Australian Open for the second consecutive year.

But in an alternative universe, Michelsen could be sitting in class at the University of Georgia for his sophomore year of college. This time two years ago he had just cracked the Top 600 in the PIF ATP Rankings and was an 18-year-old fully prepared to go to school.

“This is a much better life than doing that,” Michelsen told ATPTour.com with a smile on his face, calling the thought of how his life has panned out “absurd”.

“College tennis did sound fun and it is fun. It looks awesome. But I’ve just never been a big school guy, so I’m super happy… I’m not the most social guy, either. I just like to play tennis and chill out, do my thing. I think the way I’m living my life is something I never considered growing up. And I’m still crazy happy with everything and how it’s all going.”

Michelsen’s older brother, Jake, graduated from Biola University in May and got a job at home in Irvine, 20 minutes from where the family lives. Jake is working for one of their father’s friends in a finance job, “doing great”. Could that have been Alex’s path?

“Maybe, yes, who knows? It’s not the world we’re living in. But, yes, I probably would have gone in a similar direction,” Michelsen said. “My dad is a lawyer, and he’s got a lot of friends… Probably could have hooked me up with a job after college. It’s not crazy to think that could have been my path.”

    Watch Michelsen’s Journey To Jeddah:

Michelsen did not have a dream job outside of tennis. “If I could have been a professional video game player, that would have been sick. I played a lot of video games during Covid. That would have been so sick,” he said, cracking a laugh. “But that would have never happened because I’m just not that good.”

The Californian played a lot of Fortnite, including with close friend Learner Tien, who is also into the third round of the Australian Open. “I got pretty good at one point. I was pretty good,” Michelsen said. “Learner Tien is incredible at Fortnite. He won’t say it, but he’s incredible.”

Now they are both competing on the world’s biggest stage. Michelsen advanced past James McCabe on Thursday afternoon and planned to watch Tien face former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev from the comfort of his hotel room.

“He doesn’t need me. He’ll do just fine,” said Michelsen. That proved prophetic, as Tien stunned Medvedev in a fifth-set tie-break at 2:55 a.m. Friday morning.

While both Californians are on the rise, Michelsen has a bit more experience, with 2024 being his first full year of competition on the ATP Tour.

“Physically, I’ve improved a lot of things, like my serve, my forehand, especially. But I feel like mentally, I’ve made the biggest change in the last year than physically,” Michelsen said. “I feel like my game has not really changed in terms of the way I play, but mentally, just the way I approach matches, and the way I am in matches.”

    It All Adds Up

Some of those improvements have been on the mental side of the sport. There have been the simple things, like not throwing his racquet as much or “chirping” at his box as often as he once did.

“I like the feeling of being composed on the court. And it’s not something I had growing up. So, I’m super glad I figured it out at some point,” said Michelsen, who began working with former World No. 15 Robby Ginepri alongside Jay Leavitt around last year’s US Open. “He’s definitely helped because he’s been in the situations. He’s been in very stressed situations on the court…. He’s given me some great advice. That has helped a tonne. But I’ve also known for a while that I needed to clean it up, and he just stepped in and helped out a lot.”

Life has changed off the court, too. Michelsen is in Melbourne with his girlfriend, Caroline, who was also in Auckland.

“We’ve been spending a lot of quality time together because I didn’t see her for about six weeks before this. So, I’ve been spending a lot of time with her. We’ll just chill out, watch the matches,” Michelsen said. “It’s a lot more fun to have company in the room. I like being alone, but it’s so much better to have her company with me.

“Support is big. At first, I played a lot of Challengers. I went to a lot of places by myself. I had my first ATP final at 18. I was by myself. But having the support is crucial. I realise when you’re just going week to week, different city, you need people. You need good people there to support you.”

Michelsen “loves the courts” in Melbourne and “the city is sick” (when the bugs are not bothering him). The 20-year-old will help the improvements he has made and the good vibes will lead to an even deeper run in the season’s first major. Next up is a third-round showdown with 19th seed Karen Khachanov.

“I had to get good at trying to find the balance of being happy after a win versus, ‘You’ve got to go and play in a couple days again’,” Michelsen said. “I can enjoy tonight. I don’t have anything tomorrow to focus on besides practice. Then I’ll probably start getting locked in on Saturday morning when I’ve got to play again.”

Alex Michelsen’s journey on the ATP Tour has been nothing short of absurd. From starting out as a promising young talent to facing setbacks and challenges along the way, Michelsen’s career has taken unexpected twists and turns.

Despite his talent and potential, Michelsen struggled to make a mark on the tour in the early stages of his career. He faced injuries, losses, and doubts about his future in the sport. However, he never gave up and continued to work hard to improve his game.

Just when it seemed like Michelsen’s career was on the brink of collapse, he suddenly found his groove and started to string together impressive victories. His confidence grew, and he began to make a name for himself on the tour.

But just when things were looking up for Michelsen, another setback occurred. A controversial decision by the tournament officials led to Michelsen being disqualified from a crucial match, leaving his future uncertain once again.

Despite the ups and downs, Michelsen’s journey has been defined by his resilience and determination. He has faced adversity head-on and never shied away from a challenge. While his path may have been unconventional and absurd at times, Michelsen’s story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of professional tennis and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.

As Michelsen continues to navigate the ups and downs of the ATP Tour, one thing is certain – his journey is far from over, and there are bound to be many more twists and turns along the way. Stay tuned to see where this absurd journey will take him next.

  • How the Thunder turned ‘youthful energy’ into a winning culture

ISAIAH HARTENSTEIN HAD done almost everything expected of him during his delayed debut for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

After missing this season’s first 15 games due to a broken left hand, the center filled up the stat sheet with 13 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and four blocks in a Nov. 20 home win over the Portland Trail Blazers. It was the type of impact performance the Thunder anticipated when Hartenstein signed a three-year, $87 million deal in free agency over the summer.

But Hartenstein still needed to put the finishing touches on his first official outing in an Oklahoma City uniform.

“You know you gotta bark, right?” Thunder forward Jalen Williams said to Hartenstein seconds after the final buzzer sounded.

As is uniquely the norm with the Thunder, Hartenstein had plenty of company while he answered a few questions from the team’s sideline reporter Nick Gallo.

“Nick, he’s out of breath,” Williams jokingly chimed in from behind Hartenstein, eager to get to the grand finale. As the interview ended, Hartenstein grabbed the microphone with both hands and released what he later termed “a solid, little bark” as a rite of initiation.

    “Roo-roo-roo! Roo-roo-roo!”

It’s a silly tradition that started midway through last season, when the Thunder were in the process of becoming the youngest No. 1 seed in NBA history. It began with an impromptu bark from Williams, known as “JDub” in Thunder parlance to avoid being confused with Jaylin “J-Will” Williams.

The barking became an audible expression of the group’s mix of goofy personalities. The Thunder take their jobs extremely seriously. Themselves, not so much.

“Just assimilate into the culture, man,” Alex Caruso told ESPN. “It’s a long year. For us to get to where we want to be, we got to be one and together, and that’s part of it.”

The post-win interviews on the television broadcast, which always are group affairs and occasionally end with barking, display the bond of an ascending contender that has a collegial feel and a professional approach.

Oklahoma City — only a few years removed from having one of the NBA’s worst records — has remained true to its core organizational philosophies even as the Thunder emerged as an elite team earlier than anticipated. Coach Mark Daigneault has managed to get one of the league’s youngest teams to consistently embrace the mundane — from skill work to game-plan detail — even while experiencing success that often results in inflated egos.

“I think that’s why we’ve been able to accelerate our development,” Shai Gilgeous-Alexander told ESPN. “All those little things that go into winning, they mean a lot to us because of our competitiveness and what our common goal is as a group.”

The Thunder made jumps of 16 and 17 wins over the past two seasons, respectively, as 2022 lottery picks Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren proved themselves as star-caliber complements to Gilgeous-Alexander. Instead of trading for another star in the wake of last spring’s second-round playoff exit, Thunder general manager Sam Presti targeted top-notch role players who fit the Thunder’s culture and style of play, signing Hartenstein and trading for Caruso, who became the oldest player on the roster (30) when he was acquired in a summer trade with the Chicago Bulls.

As this season nears the midway point, Oklahoma City is on a 69-win pace despite Holmgren playing in only 10 games before suffering a fractured pelvis that has sidelined him since Nov. 11. The Thunder are especially dominant on the less glamorous end of the floor. They are allowing a league-low 102.9 points per 100 possessions, 3.8 fewer than any other team, entering Thursday’s home game against against the East-leading Cleveland Cavaliers, who snapped Oklahoma City’s 15-game winning streak on Jan. 8.

The combination of what Caruso describes as “youthful energy” and “discipline” made an immediate impression on Oklahoma City’s veteran offseason additions.

“I think a lot of young guys focus too much on what’s going to happen in the future, but I feel like they’re really good at making sure we’re getting better each day,” said Hartenstein, 26, the third-oldest player on the Oklahoma City roster behind Caruso and reserve forward/center Kenrich Williams, 30. “If you want to be a great team in this league, you have to focus on the boring stuff, the details. They do a great job in that.”

DAIGNEAULT COMPARES GILGEOUS-ALEXANDER’S evolution into one of the league’s best players to investing in a mutual fund. It’s not flashy, just steady gains compounding day after day.

It’s an analogy that also applies to the Thunder’s path from a rebuilding project to the clear-cut Western Conference favorite in the four and a half years since Presti promoted Daigneault from assistant to head coach as Oklahoma City was in the process of tearing down the roster around Gilgeous-Alexander.

Presti — armed with a historic stockpile of draft picks that was built beginning with the 2019 blockbuster deal that sent Paul George to the LA Clippers and brought Gilgeous-Alexander (and eventually Jalen Williams) to Oklahoma City — refrained from making splashy trades in an attempt to expedite the franchise’s return to relevance. Instead, the Thunder leaned into patience and player development, enduring two seasons near the bottom of the Western Conference standings at the start of Daigneault’s tenure before the progress became apparent.

“Those years when we weren’t the greatest, he always made sure that we were playing the game the right way and doing the stuff that would transfer once we became a better team,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “And that’s carried over obviously with the more talent we get and the better we get.”

Gilgeous-Alexander worked his way from intriguing prospect to All-Star to arguably the NBA’s most well-rounded superstar since arriving in Oklahoma City. Luguentz Dort, the only other player remaining from that 2019-20 roster, has transformed from an undrafted player with an ugly jumper to one of the league’s premier 3-and-D players, a perimeter stopper who has shot 39.7% from 3-point range over the last season and a half. The rest of the roster has followed suit.

Rival executives and coaches widely believe that the Thunder are in the early stages of an extended window as a contender, but Oklahoma City’s roster has been built without repeated swings in the upper half of the draft lottery.

Chet Holmgren, selected second in the 2022 draft, is the lone single-digit draft pick on the roster and one of only four first-rounders in the Oklahoma City rotation. It’s a deep roster full of under-the-radar developmental success stories occupying key roles, the sort of team that is the result of tremendous scouting, which is still how Presti views himself at the core.

Isaiah Joe, a skinny, sharpshooting reserve guard whom Daigneault likes to refer to as one of the league’s toughest players pound-for-pound, was a waiver-wire pickup. Aaron Wiggins, a backup forward, was the No. 55 pick in 2021. They both earned new four-year contracts over the summer.

This summer’s major additions, Caruso and Hartenstein, fit into the ethos of grinders made good. Like Dort, they both had to toil in the G League to earn end-of-the-roster spots in the NBA and work their way into becoming essential role players. Caruso actually began his pro career with Oklahoma City Blue, the Thunder’s G League affiliate, before leaving for a two-way deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. With a smile, Presti cited this as proof that he has made his share of talent evaluation errors.

Daigneault has attributed “an uncommon maturity” of a roster that still ranks as the league’s fourth youngest weighted by playing time, according to ESPN Research, as an essential element of Oklahoma City’s success.

“They want to be a part of something bigger than themselves,” Daigneault said. “I think that’s one of the things that Sam’s nailed in this process. The types of people that we’ve brought in the door, regardless of whether they’re still here or they’re not, by and large, have been committed professionals that are ambitious, but they’re also willing to complete the team.

“So that’s been a huge starting point. And then you take those people, you put ’em in a stable environment, you educate ’em on the value of all the invisible things, and you hammer that over and over again. You hammer that environment over and over again. You hammer those messages over and over again and then you double down on the people that you have and just allow that to grow and compound.”

Thunder’s Nikola Topic makes postgame barking debut

After a convincing win against the Spurs, the Thunder make sure to get rookie Nikola Topic in on their postgame barking tradition.

THE GROUP POSTGAME interviews are cute demonstrations of the Thunder’s chemistry, but they have also been fodder for criticism from a four-time NBA champion.

Golden State Warriors power forward Draymond Green called the Thunder’s group interviews “a little alarming” during an early-season edition of his podcast.

“There’s a certain seriousness that it takes to win in this league, and there’s a certain fear you have to instill in teams in order to win,” Green said. “And I don’t know if they’re instilling that fear in teams with all of the bromance and stuff after the game.”

Green’s comments, whether serious concern or a trolling attempt to create controversy for a rival, went viral. But they didn’t elicit much more than a shrug from the Thunder, a team that does not do drama.

“We’re just concerned about what’s going on here and everything else kind of takes care of itself,” Jalen Williams said, claiming it was the first he’d heard of Green’s comments when asked about them a few days later. “I feel like it’s kind of weird to have a strong opinion on it, but we’re just so locked in on what we have going on here.”

The Thunder have a point differential of plus-12.8 points per game, which would break the record set by the 1971-72 Lakers (plus-12.3) for the best in NBA history. They have lost consecutive games just once this season and have yet to lose three in a row. That’s a pretty convincing way to prevent questions about whether a team is serious enough.

“We all know it’s a job and then it’s a business, but at the end of the day, we’re playing a game we love every day,” Dort said. “Every time we wake up, we’re doing something fun and we want to keep that in everything. I mean, this game brings a lot of stress and a lot of stuff outside, so whenever we’re together, we want to have as much fun [as] we can have. That’s just some of the goofiness that we started doing and it helps the team, honestly.”

Gilgeous-Alexander didn’t bark after his Dec. 26 performance that Daigneault described as “a masterpiece,” when he carried the Thunder to a road win over the Indiana Pacers by scoring 16 of his career-high-tying 45 points in the final seven minutes.

But Gilgeous-Alexander’s final words of his on-court interview with Gallo did provide a glimpse of the Thunder’s bond.

“All right, let’s go to Charlotte!” Gilgeous-Alexander said with genuine enthusiasm before revealing why the next stop, and a meeting with one of the NBA’s worst teams, had been circled on the Thunder’s calendar for weeks.

“It’s Wiggs’ jersey retirement in Charlotte,” Gilgeous-Alexander said, pointing his thumb behind him at Aaron Wiggins as Kenrich Williams playfully massaged the reserve forward’s shoulders and Jaylin Williams jokingly smacked him in the chest. “Let’s hurry up and get there!”

A day ahead of their game against the Hornets, the team’s entire traveling party boarded a bus at their hotel in Charlotte for a 90-minute drive to High Point, N.C., to visit Wiggins’ high school alma mater, Wesleyan Christian Academy. Wiggins was honored in a pregame ceremony, and the Thunder stayed for the first quarter to watch his younger brother, Zacch, play before getting back on the bus and making the journey back to the Charlotte hotel.

The Thunder made a similar trip — 90 minutes each way from Dallas to Waco — to celebrate Kenrich Williams when his high school retired his number the night before a December road game last season.

“This is my only team, but I don’t think it’s like that on every team,” Jalen Williams said. “It’s something that nobody on the squad takes for granted.”

The Oklahoma City Thunder have always been known for their young and energetic roster, but this season they have transformed that youthful energy into a winning culture. With a mix of talented veterans and promising young players, the Thunder have found the perfect balance to consistently compete and come out on top.

One key factor in the Thunder’s success this season has been the leadership of veteran players like Chris Paul and Danilo Gallinari. Paul, in particular, has been instrumental in guiding the team both on and off the court, instilling a winning mentality and holding his teammates accountable. Gallinari has provided a steady presence on the court, showcasing his scoring ability and veteran savvy.

Another key component to the Thunder’s winning culture has been the development of their young players. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has emerged as a rising star in the league, showcasing his versatility and skill on both ends of the court. Luguentz Dort has also made a strong impact, providing a defensive presence and showing flashes of his offensive potential.

Overall, the Thunder have found success by embracing their youthful energy and using it to their advantage. By blending the exuberance of their young players with the wisdom of their veterans, the Thunder have created a winning culture that has propelled them to success this season. With a strong foundation in place, the Thunder look poised to continue their winning ways for years to come.
