Co-Worker Jokes That Man Skipped Work Because He Won the Lottery. Turns Out, He Really Did!
Election night was particularly special for one lottery player in Southern California.
Michael Chavez found out he won $1.2 million in the California Lottery Mega Millions on Nov. 5, 2024, after a co-worker joked to him about winning the draw, reported NBC4 Los Angeles and The Sacramento Bee.
“I actually woke up in the middle of the night to check the election results to see who won for president, not Mega Millions,” Chavez told the California Lottery, per the outlets.
“I went back to bed without looking at my ticket,” he added.
The next morning, Chavez texted work to say he would not be coming in that day — and a co-worker jokingly responded that it was because he’d won the lottery, NBC4 Los Angeles reported.

“He kidded me if the reason I wasn’t at work was because I had won the million,” Chavez reportedly said.
He added that his co-worker “even jokingly congratulated me” and sent him a screenshot of the Mega Millions results via text, per NBC4 Los Angeles.
Chavez finally decided to check his lottery ticket and then discovered that he’d matched five out of the six winning numbers — winning him a prize of $1,214,818, according to the outlet.
“I could not believe my eyes,” the lucky winner reportedly said. “I’m so excited and extremely grateful.”

Chavez credited his co-worker for reminding him to check his winning lottery ticket, which he purchased at a Lake Liquor store in Lakewood, a 20-mile drive southeast from Los Angeles, per The Sacramento Bee.
The store received a bonus of over $6,000 for selling the winning ticket, KTLA reported.
“I’ll never forget election night or especially that text,” said Chavez, per NBC4 Los Angeles.

We’ve got clouds and some rain during the next couple of days before a nice stretch of sunny and low-humidity weather to take us through the weekend. Only thing to watch for is the low-end potential of some storms on Thursday afternoon.
Wednesday
It’s a fairly dreary morning outside, with light, misty rainfall and areas of fog. This drizzle and fog may persist for much of the morning before we’re simply left with a layer of clouds. With a warmer, southeasterly flow in place we can expect temperatures to warm to about 70 degrees this afternoon, with increasing humidity levels. A chance of drizzle remains overnight, as lows only drop into the lower 60s.

This will be a fairly warm day, despite the cloudy skies, as high temperatures rise into the mid-70s with humidity to match. Some scattered showers will be possible during the morning hours, along with gusty southeasterly winds. During the afternoon, a cold front will approach the area, likely reaching Katy and Tomball an hour or two after noon. What I think we’re likely to see is a broken line of showers that may possibly fill in as it moves through Houston during the afternoon. There is a slight chance of some severe weather with the front, and this is most likely to occur as it passes to the east of the Interstate 45 corridor. This includes the potential for severe thunderstorms or damaging winds. (There is a very low-end chance of hail or a tornado). For most of us, the front should be a fairly modest event, with drier air moving in behind. Lows will drop into the low 50s on Thursday night with clearing skies.
Saturday morning looks to be the coldest of the week. (Weather Bell) Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
Sunshine is back on the menu, along with a nice slug of drier air and sunshine. Winds from the north will be a bit gusty on Friday morning, but should back down after that. We’re looking at highs on Friday and Saturday of around 70 degrees, with temperatures at night falling into the mid- to upper-40s. Sunday will be a little warmer, with highs in the lower- to mid-70s, but still with plenty of dry air. I can’t wait to take a long bike ride and soak up some sun.
Next week
The atmosphere turns a bit messier next week, but generally I expect we’ll see warm, partly sunny days with highs in the 70s, and nights with lows around 60 degrees. There may be some slight, daily rain chances. Some kind of front works its way toward Houston by the weekend, but an Arctic blast it will not be.

SLU turns tables on VCU in 78-69 victory
St. Louis University turned it around against Virginia Commonwealth on Tuesday night, going from a 16-point loss to a nine-point win in the span of two weeks as it recorded its biggest win of the season so far, a 78-69 win over league-leading VCU at Chaifetz Arena.
The game was hardly artistic, but the result was a thing of beauty for the Billikens (13-8, 6-2), who came into the game 0-5 against Quad 1 or Quad 2 opponents and are now a half-game behind A-10 leading George Mason. VCU is 16-5, 6-2.
Gibson Jimerson scored 26 points and Kobe Johnson matched his career-high with 19 points, including five free throws in the final 2:30. After a slow start, Robbie Avila finished with 14 points, most of them at the free throw line where he made eight of eight.
SLU’s tough week continues on Friday when Dayton comes to Chaifetz Arena.

SLU was able to tighten up on some of things that did them in the first meeting. VCU had 27 points off turnovers in the first meeting and had just 14 this time, and after having 19 second-chance points in Richmond had 15 in St. Louis. VCU had its worst shooting night of the season at 32.8 percent, while SLU shot 48.8 percent from the field.
The second half swung back and forth, with VCU going up five, then SLU going up five, then VCU going up two. Jimerson drove to the basket, scored, was fouled and made the free throw to put SLU back in the lead with 8:49 to go at 52-51. After a badly missed 3 by VCU, Amari McCottry drove to the basket, looking like he was going to try for a spectacular dunk but he was too well defended and passed to Isaiah Swope in the corner for a 3-pointer that put SLU up four.
VCU got within two points before a layin by Kalu Anya and then a 3-pointer by Jimerson put SLU up 60-53 with 4:49 to play. VCU finally cut the lead to six on a 3-pointer with 1:10 left. After a delay when a fight broke out in the stands behind the VCU bench, Johnson made two free throws to push the lead back to eight, and VCU countered with two free throws of its own to take it back to six with 49.9 seconds left.
Jimerson made two free throws to extend the lead and after a missed 3 for VCU, Swope clinched the win with two free throws with 28.7 seconds to play.
SLU trailed 31-28 at the half, and once again, it shot much better than VCU did (47.8 percent to 36.1 percent), but VCU took 13 more field goal attempts. VCU had 10 points off offensive rebounds, and while the percentage wasn’t as bad in the first half as it was when the teams met in Richmond, it still leaned substantially in VCU’s favor and made a difference in who was ahead.
SLU’s offense was on and off, and while Jimerson made his first 3-point try of the night, he missed his next three and made just one of four free throws in the half. Still, he led the team in scoring in the first half with 10, most of them on drives to the basket. Avila didn’t score until there was 4:49 to go in the half, on just his second shot of the game. Johnson had nine points in the first half, just off his season high of 12.

Two playable characters, one of whom is a female protagonist named Lucia, are already generating buzz. There’s talk of a super expansive open world with wild missions, plenty of stories, and who knows what else.
While fans are here for the incredible storyline, what’s really getting people hyped are the potential upgrades to gameplay mechanics. Probably smoother movement and better AI.
However, at this point, Rockstar could release a demo of the character picking up groceries, and fans would still lose their minds.

Apple turns its AI on by default in latest software update

Apple on Monday released a software update for iPhones, iPads and Macs that turns Apple Intelligence on by default for users with supported devices.
The updates, iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3 and macOS Sequoia 15.3, also disable AI summaries for news apps, which have gained a reputation for twisting news push notifications to display inaccurate facts.
The release is a milestone in the rollout of Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of artificial intelligence features. Apple Intelligence is a critical product for Apple as it seeks to distinguish its products from competitors with an AI system integrated into iPhones and its other products.
While Apple Intelligence is already featured in the company’s marketing for the latest iPhones, the rollout has been deliberate and limited. Apple says that is to allow it to test new features and make sure it has enough server capacity. The entire Apple Intelligence suite is still officially in beta, and it’s only available in a handful of English-speaking countries.
Apple’s move to turn Apple Intelligence on by default is a step towards a more complete rollout of the feature. Previously, users with supported iPhones — models that were released in 2024 as well as 2023 “Pro” level models — were prompted to turn on Apple Intelligence when setting up their phone, a process that included downloading AI models from the internet and some installation.
With the latest updates, Apple Intelligence will be turned on by default when the latest software update is installed, expanding the number of users who are exposed to the software. Apple Intelligence is marketed as being able to rewrite text, generate images and summarize long emails and message threads.
“For users new or upgrading to iOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence will be enabled automatically during iPhone onboarding,” Apple said in the developer release notes for the update.
Users will have to navigate to the Apple Intelligence page in the Settings app to turn it off, according to Apple.
The latest software update also includes one of the most notable example so far of Apple rolling back an AI feature after it generated controversy and subpar results. Apple joins Google and Microsoft as companies that were forced to roll back new AI features after it generated harmful content or “hallucinations” that weren’t based in reality.
Apple Intelligence can take stacks of notifications and simplify them into a three-sentence notification. However, the BBC and other news outlets discovered in December that the feature can twist news headlines into inaccurate information.
Earlier this month, Apple’s system conflated notifications from BBC’s sports app to say that “Brazilian tennis player, Rafael Nadal, comes out as gay.” Nadal is Spanish and is married to Maria Francisca Perello.
The latest update disables Apple Intelligence for news and entertainment apps. Apple Intelligence also has been updated to show any notifications generated by its AI in italics, signifying which notifications are created by generative AI and which were pushed by the app itself.
“We’re pleased that Apple has listened to our concerns and is pausing the summarization feature for news,” a BBC spokesperson told CNBC.
Apple told CNBC earlier this month that its notification summaries for news apps would return in a future update.
