  • Newton Twp. man charged after shooting delivery driver – Scranton Times-Tribune

Police charged a 43-year-old Newton Twp. man after authorities say he shot an Instacart driver who was delivering groceries to his home Saturday night.

Officers responded to 20 Misty Lane around 7:37 p.m. and the victim, a 35-year-old Scranton man was triaged and immediately transported to the hospital where he went directly into surgery, South Abington Twp. Police Chief Paul Wolfe said.

Wolfe added the victim was shot in the leg and is recovering well. He expects officers to interview the victim further about the incident Monday or Tuesday.

“He gave us a brief statement but it was not in writing and it didn’t provide any justification for the shooting,” Wolfe said.

Police initially charged Nicholas Sabo with recklessly endangering another person and Wolfe noted additional charges may be filed after officers talk with the victim.

The shooting occurred after Sabo’s wife ordered groceries from Weis Markets through the Instacart app but didn’t inform him, Wolfe said.

When the driver arrived at the house, the woman received an alert that there was movement on the side of the house by the garage and she thought the man was trying to break into a utility trailer, the chief said. Sabo then retrieved a gun, ran outside, saw the man by the trailer and shot him for trespassing, Wolfe said.

Bail and preliminary hearing information were unavailable Monday.

Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the shooting and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The incident has left the community shocked and saddened, as acts of violence like this are rare in the quiet town of Newton Twp.

The delivery driver is expected to make a full recovery, but the emotional impact of the incident will likely linger for some time. Our thoughts are with the victim and their family during this difficult time. Stay tuned for updates as the investigation unfolds.
