Tyler Sabapathy: Eagles fan, 18, dies after falling from pole, sources say
Friends of Temple student killed falling from pole share their grief
18-year-old Tyler Sabapathy died after he fell from a pole in Center City while celebrating the Eagles win. His devastated friends shared their grief, expressing what a good man he was.
PHILADELPHIA – A night of joyous celebrations took a terrifying turn that claimed the life of a young Eagles fan, according to sources.
What we know:
Philadelphia police confirmed to FOX 29’s Kelly Rule that an 18-year-old man landed on his head after falling from a pole near 15th and Market streets on Sunday night.
He was taken to a local hospital, where he was put in very critical condition, according to authorities, who say he fell on his own.
On Tuesday night, sources told FOX 29 that the 18-year-old, a student at Temple University, had died.
Video captures moment teen falls from pole while celebrating Eagles win
An 18-year-old Temple University student has died, sources say, after he fell from a pole while celebrating the Eagles Super Bowl berth. A video captures the moment the incident occurred.
What they’re saying:
On Tuesday, Temple University released the following announcement to students and colleagues titled “Tragic News to Share:”
“It is with deep sadness that we write to share news of the death of first-year student Tyler Sabapathy. Over the weekend, Tyler sustained critical injuries and ultimately passed away this afternoon.
The loss of a promising 18-year-old man like Tyler is both tragic and traumatic. There are no words that can make sense of it, and the entire Temple community mourns his passing. Our hearts go out to Tyler’s family, friends, classmates and all who knew and loved him.
A native of Toronto, Canada, Tyler was already a thriving student within Temple University’s College of Public Health, where he was majoring in exercise and sport science. As an accomplished gymnast with more than 120 medals in provincial, regional and international competitions, Tyler was fascinated with injury prevention, and this ultimately led him to pursue the major that he did. He no doubt had a bright future ahead of him, and it is so tragic that we will not be able to see how he would have made his mark on the world.
As a member of the university’s club gymnastics team, Tyler displayed exceptional self-discipline and work ethic, spending countless hours a week training and honing his craft. He was loved by his teammates, friends and coaches here in Philadelphia.
Temple University is committed to supporting our community during this time of unspeakable loss. We encourage students to seek available support services at Tuttleman Counseling Services, located at 1700 N. Broad St., which offers a range of resources. For more information on services and hours of operation, call 215-204-7276 or visit the Tuttleman Counseling Services website.
For faculty and staff members, our employee assistance program offers support and resources 24/7 online or by calling 1-888-267-8126. Employees and students can also contact Temple’s Psychological Services Center at psc@temple.edu, or 215-204-7100.
Once again, we extend our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies to those closest to Tyler, especially his parents and siblings. He will be deeply missed.”
Dig deeper:
Temple University freshman students and teammates of 18-year-old Tyler Sabapathy are devastated, remembering him as a beloved student and talented athlete.
Junior Robert Stewart says he’s cherishing the moments he had with him, as he supervises the Men’s Gymnastics Team practices.
“To hear that of all sports, but of all people of that to happen to, is Tyler, is actually pretty upsetting. It’s shocking. It’s hard to honestly comprehend,” says Stewart. “He was a beautiful student, he was amazing, he was nice, he was sweet, he was kind.’
Students tell FOX 29 they are feeling differently about the celebrations now, but want some of the negative feedback on social media to stop.
“It’s the culture of the city so please don’t make a mockery of it. It was an accident,” says Stewart.
Ray Epstein, Temple’s student body president, says the tragedy should be used as a message of caution.
“We can celebrate easily and happily without necessarily continuing this tradition,” she says. “As much as it’s been something that’s been positive for people, this is a sign that it needs to come to an end, and it’s nobody’s fault because people were participating in a long-held culture, but we need to disrupt it.”
A spokesperson for Temple University said they sent out the following message to students before the NFC Championship game, and will be sending out similar messaging before the Super Bowl.
Dear Temple University Students,
This Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles face the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game for the chance to compete in Super Bowl LIX. The excitement is palpable across the city, surrounding counties, and beyond!
While such moments unite fans in celebration, history has shown that post-game festivities can sometimes lead to destructive or unsafe behavior. At Temple University, your safety and the well-being of our community remain our top priorities. We ask that all students keep the following in mind:
- Stay Responsible: Acts of vandalism, refusal to disperse, or destruction of property could result in both criminal charges and university disciplinary action. Sanctions may include fines or even immediate suspension. Please note that surveillance will be increased both on campus and in the city during the game.
- Respect Our Community: Temple takes pride in fostering strong relationships with our neighbors. Celebrations that damage property or disrupt our community will not be tolerated.
- Celebrate Safely: If the Eagles win, the city and state will coordinate official celebrations on a designated day, ensuring plenty of opportunities to revel responsibly.
- Lead by Example: As members of the Temple community, you are leaders. Let’s show what it means to celebrate with spirit and respect.
We encourage everyone to play a role in keeping this moment memorable for all the right reasons. If you have any concerns, please reach out to the Office of the Dean of Students or Campus Safety Services.
Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to the Temple community. Let’s make this a historic and joyous time—Go Birds!
The backstory:
Eagles fans start climbing poles as Birds head to Super Bowl
Eagles fans are already climbing poles as they celebrate the Birds’ victory against the Washington Commanders.
Sabapathy was one of many to climb poles across the city as hundreds of Eagles fans gathered to celebrate the team’s championship win against the Commanders.
The poles are typically greased by the city prior to big sports games in an effort to deter climbing, but many fans over the years have made it to the top regardless.
The Source: Information from this article was provided by the Philadelphia Police Department, Temple University officials, students and friends.
I’m deeply saddened to report that Tyler Sabapathy, an 18-year-old Eagles fan, has tragically passed away after falling from a pole during a celebration following the team’s victory. According to sources, Tyler was celebrating with friends when the accident occurred, resulting in his untimely death. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tyler’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Tyler. Fly high, Eagles fan. #TylerSabapathy #EaglesFan #RestInPeace

Tyler Perry’s ‘Madea’s Destination Wedding’ First Look Revealed
Tyler Perry has five film and TV projects coming to Netflix in 2025: “Madea’s Destination Wedding;” the new comedy series “She The People;” part 2 of the hit drama series “Beauty in Black;” “Straw” starring Taraji P. Henson; and the faith-based film “R&B.”
These projects tally up to the sixth film and second series from Perry’s creative partnership with Netflix, inked in 2023, which sees him write, direct and produce films, series and faith-based features for the streamer.

The plot kicks off when Brian (Madea’s nephew and Joe’s son, also played by Perry) and his ex-wife Debrah (Taja V. Simpson) learn that their daughter Tiffany (Diamond White) is engaged to a rapper she met on a yacht — and the wedding is in two weeks.

Tyler Bilodeau injury update: Mick Cronin jokes about UCLA forward’s desire to play through pain
Tyler Bilodeau, UCLA – © Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images The UCLA Bruins were able to earn a road win against the Washington Huskies . However, along the way, it appeared head coach Mick Cronin also saw his Bruins team suffer a loss when forward Tyler Bilodeau went down with an injury.
Cronin explained following the game that Bilodeau turned his ankle and while he wanted to play through it, that wouldn’t have been the smart long-term decision for the Bruins. So, while joking about his toughness, Cronin explained why he was limited later in the game.
“I didn’t like the way he was moving,” Mick Cronin said . “It’s hard for me to get a lot of info and it’s hard for a trainer to really assess things on the fly like that. He turned his ankle. So, you’re basically just looking — a kid like him, he’s going to say he wants to play. You could hit him in the head with a bat and He’s gonna says, ‘I want to play.’”
For the game, Tyler Bilodeau was unable to get a score in just three minutes played. That came after he played 31 minutes against Wisconsin in their previous game. For the season, he’s averaging 13.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.3 assists while shooting 50.5 percent from the field and 39.6 percent from three-point range. That’s while averaging 26.9 minutes per game this season.
Moving forward, Mick Cronin knows what Tyler Bilodeau is going to be important for UCLA. So, it was better for the one game to trust the team’s depth and not risk a worse injury.
“When he said he wanted to play, I put him in but I didn’t like the way he was moving. I’m more worried about his career and the rest of our season,” Cronin said.
“Like I told the team, we’ve got enough players. I’ve got confidence in you guys. We just got to care. My tirade about caring, if we act like we care, we won’t make mistakes, we’ll play smart. You’ve got to care. We’ve been an A+ in caring and mental — you can tell when a team cares.”
UCLA ended up beating Washington 65-60. Four different Bruins scored in double digits for the game. The major difference in the game ended up being three-point shooting, with UCLA making 52.9 percent from distance compared to just 22.7 percent from Washington.
Now, Cronin and the Bruins will turn their attention to the USC Trojans . That game is coming quickly on Tuesday night.
The post Tyler Bilodeau injury update: Mick Cronin jokes about UCLA forward’s desire to play through pain appeared first on On3 .
UCLA forward Tyler Bilodeau has been battling through a nagging injury, but head coach Mick Cronin isn’t surprised by his determination to play through the pain.During a recent press conference, Cronin joked about Bilodeau’s toughness, saying, “Tyler is a warrior. He would probably play with a broken leg if we let him. But don’t worry, we won’t be putting him out there with any serious injuries.”
Bilodeau has been a key player for the Bruins this season, averaging double-digit points and rebounds per game. Despite his injury, he has continued to contribute on both ends of the court and is determined to help lead UCLA to success.
Fans can expect to see Bilodeau continue to push through the pain and give it his all on the court, as he is truly a warrior in every sense of the word.

Miami Heat’s Tyler Herro Earns First NBA All-Star Berth
As a rookie, an injury kept Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro from participating in the Rising Stars Challenge during NBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago.
This time, Herro will finally get to experience the feeling of being a participant in the weekend. On Thursday, he was chosen by the coaches as an Eastern Conference reserve. The announcment was made on TNT.
This marks Herro first All-Star appearance. He now joins fellow Kentucky alum Bam Adebayo as Wildcats to earn the honor as members of the Heat.
Herro has been the team’s best player this season despite the Jimmy Butler saga and inconsistency from Adebayo. Herro is averaging a career-high 24.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists. This is his finest season since he won the Sixth Man of the Year in 2022.
Herro has steadily developed into one of the league’s best players. After entering the NBA with a repuation as a shooter, he has proven he can impact the game in several areas.
This season, he’s improved as a rebounder, facilitator and defender.
Herro and second-year forward Jaime Jaquez are the Heat’s only representatives during the weekend. Jaquez was selected to the Rising Stars Challenge for a second straight season. Last year he also participated in the slam dunk contest.
All-Star Weekend takes place Feb. 14-16 in San Francisco at the home of the Golden State Warriors.

Guard Tyler Herro was sidelined Tuesday night, as the Miami Heat fell to the Portland Trail Blazers 116-107 at the Kaseya Center.
Herro, who turned 25 on Monday, has been dealing right groin tightness, and he missed his first game of the season. He is averaging a team-best 24 points and was missed Tuesday, as the 15-win Trail Blazers cruised to just their sixth road victory of the season.
“That was really tough to evaluate,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of the loss, given Herro’s absence. “Without Tyler, our overall intentionality was not at its highest level.”
The Heat, before the game, announced that Herro woke up with tightness Tuesday. He was originally listed as questionable for the game and was downgraded to out about an hour before tipoff.
In his fifth NBA season, Herro has assumed a heavier offensive role, especially with the uncertainty of star forward Jimmy Butler‘s future with the club. Butler recently returned from a seven-game suspension for what the Heat considered “conduct detrimental to the team.”
Rookie Kel’el Ware had 20 points and 16 rebounds and Duncan Robinson finished with 22 points for the Heat. Butler added 13 in the loss.
“I think we did well without Tyler,” Miami center Bam Adebayo said. “Obviously, we lost the game. But as far as running our sets, getting moving — obviously, Tyler is a big part of what we do, but I feel we got the ball where we were supposed to, and we just missed shots.”
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
Last night, the Miami Heat suffered a tough loss to the Portland Trail Blazers with a final score of 112-106. Adding insult to injury, star player Tyler Herro was forced to sit out the game due to injury.Herro, known for his scoring prowess and clutch performances, was sorely missed on the court as the Heat struggled to keep pace with the Blazers. His absence was felt especially in the fourth quarter, where Miami’s offense seemed to lack the spark and creativity that Herro usually brings.
Despite the setback, the Heat put up a valiant effort, with Jimmy Butler leading the charge with 27 points and 10 rebounds. However, it was not enough to overcome the Blazers’ strong performance, led by Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum.
As Miami looks to bounce back from this loss, the team will undoubtedly be eager to get Herro back on the court as soon as possible. His scoring ability and playmaking skills are crucial to the Heat’s success, and his presence will be sorely needed in the upcoming games.
Let’s hope for a speedy recovery for Tyler Herro and a strong comeback for the Miami Heat in their next matchup.

East Texas honors the Best of Texas: Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet returns
Star-studded finalists are set to shine at Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award banquet.
TYLER, Texas — The most prestigious night in East Texas sports is this Wednesday, as the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet takes center stage at the W.T. Brookshire Conference Center. The event, starting at 7 p.m., will celebrate the top talent and crown the 2024 recipient of the award, which honors the nation’s most outstanding offensive college football player with ties to the Lone Star State.
This year’s finalists are arguably the most talented group in the award’s history, boasting a mix of record-breakers and Heisman finalists who lit up the gridiron this season:
-
Ashton Jeanty (RB, Boise State): Jeanty has picked up several national honors this year, including the Doak Walker Award (top running back) and Maxwell Award (top player in college football), and has been recognized as a first team All-American by 10 different organizations: AFCA, AP, CBS Sports, FWAA, PFF, Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, The Athletic, USA Today and Walter Camp. He was also named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year and a unanimous selection for All-Mountain West First Team. Jeanty leads all FBS running backs in rushing attempts (344), yards (2,497) and touchdowns (29) while leading the nation in all-purpose yards (2,613) and total touchdowns (30). He averages over 100 yards per first half and 100 yards per second half, eclipsing the century mark in 17 of the 24 halves he played.
-
Cam Ward (QB, Miami): University of Miami’s Cam Ward put together one of the most dominant seasons in Miami Hurricanes history en route to consensus NCAA All-America honors. Ward, the 2024 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award winner, became the third Hurricane to garner the country’s oldest and most prestigious quarterback trophy, joining Vinny Testaverde (1986) and Gino Torretta (1992).
Entering the postseason, the 6-foot-2, 223-pound signal caller leads the nation in passing touchdowns (36) and quarterback rating (88.0), while ranking second in passing yards (4,123), points responsible for (254) and total offense (359.9). Ward set new single-season school records for both passing touchdowns and passing yards, becoming the first Miami player to tally seven straight 300-yard performances. The Hurricanes’ first ever ACC Player of the Year has thrown for at least 300 yards and totaled three touchdowns on 10 occasions. -
Shedeur Sanders (QB, Colorado): Shedeur Sanders put together one of the best seasons in CU history, earning the Johnny Unitas Award as the nation’s top quarterback. He currently owns over 90 school records and entering the Buffs Alamo Bowl appearance against BYU, he has completed 337-of-454 passes for 3,926 yards with 35 touchdowns and eight interceptions for a QB rating of 168.8. He is the only quarterback in the nation in the top five in yards, touchdowns, efficiency, completion percentage and completions per game. Leading Colorado to a 9-3 record just two years removed from being 1-11, he has moved into top of the career charts at CU in two seasons, having completed 635-of-884 for 7,156 yards with 62 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, needing just one more touchdown to tie the CU career record. Including two seasons at Jackson State, he has a streak of 48 straight games throwing a touchdown pass, the longest streak in NCAA Division I history.
