Tyrrell Hatton is known for his fiery temper on the golf course. He’s had some major meltdowns, including an infamous incident at the DP World Tour season finale in Dubai. Hatton snapped his club, swore loudly, and even took a swipe at the course. He was pretty unhappy with the greens, to say the least! His behavior earned him a hefty fine and some harsh criticism from commentators. Sky Sports commentator Ewen Murray was particularly scathing, saying that Hatton’s behavior was a “terrible influence” on younger golfers. But despite his hot-headed nature, Hatton has a softer side – at least when it comes to his golf game.

Fellow pro-Jordan Smith recently praised Hatton’s putting skills, saying, “Tyrrell’s an absolute demon with a wand, isn’t he? His putting is unreal. I want to get him to teach me how to putt like he does. I want his putting!” Smith’s a big fan of Hatton’s skills on the green. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Smith is not the only golfer who has praised Hatton’s incredible talent. Not only that, in fact, even for the questions that followed, Smith continued to pick Hatton. All in all, the post shared by DP World Tour on X was rightfully captioned, “Nobody loves @TyrrellHatton as much as @Jsmithgolf .”

But what is it that makes Hatton’s putting so special? Well, for starters, he’s super consistent, and I mean literally. In his last five tournaments, Hatton’s average strokes gained, or putting, is -0.321, and his putting average is an impressive 1.53. But what’s his secret? According to Hatton, the key to his success on the greens is practice and pace control.

He recommends spending time on the putting green and honing your skills as you work on perfecting that smooth, consistent stroke. You know, it’s not rocket science, but it does take dedication and hard work. One of his recent wins shows exactly why having good putting skills is important.

Tyrrell Hatton’s masterclass putting secures historic Dunhill Links title

Tyrrell Hatton’s exceptional putting skills were on full display as he overcame a late scare to win a record third 2024 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship title at St Andrews. So, Tyrrell Hatton was walking to victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with four birdies in his first 11 holes. However, things surely took an unexpected turn. The matchup got interesting when he double-bogeyed the 13th and bogeyed the 14th, allowing Nicolas Colsaerts to catch up and share the lead with just three holes left. It was anyone’s game at that point, and one would think that Hatton lost hope, but no, his clutch-putting skills came into the picture and saved the day.

The golfer birdied the last hole from just three feet out to finish on 24 under, one shot ahead of Colsaerts. I mean, it’s no surprise that Hatton’s putting mastery was the key to his victory. And it was especially sweet for him to win with his dad in attendance. “It’s the first time I’ve actually won the tournament with my dad here, so it means a lot,” Hatton said. “And to do it at the home of golf is really special.” He also credited his focus on making good putts, saying, “I was trying to stay focused and just try to hit good putts, and luckily I was able to make a few.”

This win was a big deal for Hatton, not just because it was a thrilling comeback, but also because it secured his spot in the DP World Tour’s season-ending event in Dubai. Plus, it meant he could attend his friend Matt Fitzpatrick’s wedding, which was a major motivator for him throughout the tournament. So, is it safe to say that Hatton is a putting god?
