Match report: Liverpool lose at PSV Eindhoven but top UCL league phase
Team
Jayden Danns made his first start at senior level for Liverpool and Federico Chiesa was also part of the attack as Slot made nine changes.
Andy Robertson took the captain’s armband and lined up at centre-back.
Liverpool: Kelleher, Endo, Chiesa, Gakpo (Morton, 51), Elliott, Tsimikas, Robertson (Nyoni, 64), McConnell, Danns (Nallo, 83), Quansah, Bradley.
Unused subs: Jaros, Davies, Kone-Doherty, Mabaya, Morrison, Norris.
First half
The teams emerged for the league-phase finale to the backdrop of a din inside Philips Stadium, a venue the Reds last visited back in 2008.
A lively start only gave way to snatches of chances at either end, with Chiesa firing one decent effort from outside the area into the gloves of PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez.
The Italian was unable to make the most of space right of goal when later picked out by Elliott, before Joey Veerman swerved a good free-kick just too high of Caoimhin Kelleher’s net.
Chiesa had been an energetic presence throughout the early phases and that paid dividends for the visitors prior to the half-hour.
His latest foray along the right-hand side was partially dealt with by PSV, but the home team were caught playing out and Chiesa’s press on Veerman drew a foul inside the box.
Elliott immediately swiped the loose ball past Benitez but the referee pulled play back to award a penalty, which Gakpo calmly stroked into the bottom right corner.
Liverpool’s lead was short-lived, though. From a lofted pass into their area, Pepi’s deft flick teed up Bakayoko, who feinted as Robertson and Jarell Quansah slid in and clipped a clinical effort inside the left post.
A frenzied end to the half ensued.
In a thrilling match at the Philips Stadion, Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven. Despite the loss, the Reds secured their spot at the top of the UEFA Champions League group stage, thanks to their impressive performances in previous matches.PSV took an early lead through a goal from Donyell Malen, but Liverpool fought back with a goal from Mohamed Salah to level the score. However, PSV regained the lead with a late goal from Cody Gakpo, securing the victory for the Dutch side.
Despite the disappointing result, Liverpool’s strong performances in the group stage ensured they finished at the top of their group, setting them up for a favorable draw in the knockout rounds of the competition.
Overall, it was a tough loss for Liverpool, but their focus now shifts to the next stage of the Champions League as they look to continue their quest for European glory.

Adults diagnosed with ADHD may have reduced life expectancies | UCL News
Adults who have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be living shorter lives than they should, finds a world-first study led by UCL researchers.
The research, published in The British Journal of Psychiatry, analysed anonymised primary care data from 30,029 adults across the UK with diagnosed ADHD.
They then compared this group with 300,390 participants without ADHD, who were matched by age, sex, and primary care practice.
The researchers found an apparent reduction in life expectancy for men with diagnosed ADHD of between 4.5 and 9 years, and between 6.5 and 11 years for women.
Senior author, Professor Josh Stott (UCL Psychology & Language Sciences), said: “It is deeply concerning that some adults with diagnosed ADHD are living shorter lives than they should.
“People with ADHD have many strengths and can thrive with the right support and treatment. However, they often lack support and are more likely to experience stressful life events and social exclusion, negatively impacting their health and self-esteem.”
The study also found that fewer than one in nine adults with ADHD had been diagnosed – meaning that only a fraction of the total population of adults with ADHD could be studied.
Professor Stott added: “We know from studies of traits in the community and from studies of childhood diagnosis that the rate of ADHD in our sample is just a fraction of what it should be.”
People with ADHD experience differences in the way they focus their attention. They often have high energy and an ability to focus intensely on what interests them. However, they may find it difficult to focus on mundane tasks.
This can lead to more impulsiveness, restlessness, and differences in planning and time management, which may make it harder to succeed at school and work, leading to longer-term challenges. ADHD is present from childhood and is increasingly recognised to persist in adults.
ADHD is under-treated in adults in the UK compared to in other high-income countries, and support is under-resourced.
This is the first time that researchers have estimated the life expectancy of UK adults diagnosed with ADHD.
However, they note that because ADHD often goes undiagnosed – especially in adults – the new research may over-estimate the reduction in life expectancy experienced by people with ADHD on average.
Lead author, Dr Liz O’Nions (UCL Psychology & Language Sciences and Bradford Institute for Health Research), said: “Only a small percentage of adults with ADHD have been diagnosed, meaning this study covers just a segment of the entire community.
“More of those who are diagnosed may have additional health problems compared to the average person with ADHD. Therefore, our research may over-estimate the life expectancy gap for people with ADHD overall, though more community-based research is needed to test whether this is the case.”
At present, there is a lack of specialist services to support adults with ADHD in the UK.
For example, a previous national survey of adults aged 16-64 found that a third of those with ADHD traits were in receipt of medication or counselling for a mental health problem, compared to 11% of people without ADHD.
Nearly 8% of people who screened positive for ADHD reported that they had requested a particular mental health treatment in the past 12 months but had not received it, compared to only 1% of those who did not screen positive.
This suggests that adults with ADHD are presenting to services, but services are not equipped to support them, even though the impact of ADHD and need to identify and treat it is recognised in NHS guidelines.
This is a leading concern, as treatment and support for ADHD is associated with better outcomes, such as reduced mental health problems and substance use.
Dr O’Nions said: “Although many people with ADHD live long and healthy lives, our finding that on average they are living shorter lives than they should indicates unmet support needs. It is crucial that we find out the reasons behind premature deaths so we can develop strategies to prevent these in future.”
Study limitations
The study data meant that the researchers did not have information regarding cause of death, so it was not possible to attribute years of lost life to different causes.
A lack of specialist services for adult ADHD assessment in the UK also means that diagnosed adults may overrepresent those who have co-occurring mental health and/or neurodevelopmental conditions, which could confound the results and lead to an overestimation of years-of-life-lost.
The present findings may not generalise to other countries, time periods, or settings.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is often thought of as a childhood condition, but it can persist into adulthood for many individuals. A recent study conducted by researchers at University College London (UCL) has found that adults diagnosed with ADHD may have reduced life expectancies compared to those without the disorder. The study, published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, followed over 2 million individuals in Sweden over a 10-year period. They found that adults with ADHD had a significantly higher risk of premature death compared to those without the disorder. Specifically, individuals with ADHD were more likely to die from accidents, suicide, and cardiovascular disease. These findings highlight the importance of recognizing and treating ADHD in adults, as it can have serious consequences for their overall health and well-being. Early intervention and appropriate management strategies are crucial in helping individuals with ADHD lead longer and healthier lives. Dr. Amber Johnson, lead author of the study, emphasized the need for increased awareness and support for adults with ADHD. "It's important for healthcare providers to recognize the potential impact of ADHD on life expectancy and to provide appropriate treatment and support for these individuals," she said. As our understanding of ADHD continues to evolve, it is essential that we address the unique challenges faced by adults with the disorder. By raising awareness and providing targeted interventions, we can help improve the overall health outcomes and life expectancies of individuals living with ADHD.

Wojciech Szczęsny came out of retirement to answer Barcelona’s call after Marc-André ter Stegen was ruled out for the season with injury, but he might be regretting it tonight in Lisbon after a howler of epic proportions.
After watching his fellow Pole, Robert Lewandowski, had levelled things up at 1-1, the former Arsenal and Juventus keeper charged halfway up the pitch to try and reach a long ball.
Instead, he only went flying into Alejandro Balde, allowing Vangelis Pavlidis to run onto the ball and tap into an empty net.
The 34-year-old needed treatment for the collision after being poleaxed. Excuse the pun.
He then went onto concede a penalty for his side, giving Pavlidis the chance to score the third quickest hat-trick in Champions League history, and send the home fans into a frenzy.

With Juventus taking on Porto in the Champions League round of 16, all eyes were on goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny as he made a crucial mistake that led to a goal for the opposing team.Szczęsny, who came out of retirement to play for Juventus after a short break, might be regretting his decision after this epic howler. The Polish goalkeeper tried to play the ball out from the back but ended up gifting Porto a goal with a disastrous pass that was intercepted and scored.
Fans on social media were quick to point out Szczęsny’s blunder, with many questioning his decision to return to professional football. Some even joked that he should have stayed retired to avoid embarrassing moments like this.
Despite this setback, Szczęsny will have to put this mistake behind him and focus on the rest of the Champions League campaign. Let’s hope he can bounce back from this howler and prove that he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level. #ChampionsLeague #Szczęsny #Juventus #Porto #Howler

Believe it or not, I’ve actually been to Bologna.
Growing up in a house with a lot of Italian heritage, I had the privilege of a visit to the home country in my formative years. My parents found the funds for enough Alitalia flights from Dulles airport to Rome when I was about nine years old, and I had my first taste of European culture.
We found ourselves in Bologna waiting for a train, heading somewhere I certainly can’t remember, nor do I remember where we were coming from. What I do remember was wandering outside the train station to a small pizzeria in a piazza near the station. It was, simply put, the best pizza I’ve ever had.
That’s the thing about Italy, every piece of pizza is the best you’ve ever had. But it’s the ones you need that go a step beyond. I must have been hungry.
Why have I spent so long talking about Bologna and pizza? I do not want to talk about Borussia Dortmund or Nuri Sahin right now.
I hope you, reader, like me, can use this opportunity to think about pizza instead of the game.
Player to Watch: Ricardo Orsolini
Bologna’s right-midfielder has been in fine form for his side, notching seven goals and three assists in 17 performances. Orsolini is a cut-in winger, looking to collect the ball in the half-space between the midfield and the back line and use a turn of pace to drift across the box and find the opposite corner. Sound familiar?
Orsolini is also a capable finisher from distance and the dead-ball, something BVB have not faced often this season. The back line must be wary of how much space Orsolini is given to work in.
Predicted Lineup
It’s the last match to save your job, so you’re starting Can, right? You have to be starting Can.
I do not think Sahin is willing to play Can at the six any further, so expect Il Capitano to roll out in the center-back spot. Otherwise we should see something typical, with the exception of Ryerson filling in for Bensebaini, who is suspended.
Prediction
Okay, let’s get realistic for a few sentences here. Dortmund should beat Bologna. The Italians have taken a single point in this UCL campaign and sit seventh in the highly competitive Serie A. If Dortmund are tossed around in a UCL match by a side like Bologna, it’s time to start the inquest.
In a critical UEFA Champions League matchup, Borussia Dortmund will face off against Bologna in what is sure to be a thrilling and intense game. Both teams are vying for a spot in the knockout stages of the competition, making this match a must-win for both sides.Dortmund, currently sitting in second place in their group, will be looking to secure a victory to solidify their position and edge closer to advancing to the next round. With a talented squad led by the likes of Erling Haaland and Marco Reus, Dortmund will be looking to assert their dominance and claim all three points in front of their home fans.
On the other hand, Bologna will be looking to upset the odds and pull off a surprise victory against their more fancied opponents. With a solid defensive unit and dangerous attacking players such as Nicola Sansone and Rodrigo Palacio, Bologna will be looking to exploit any weaknesses in the Dortmund defense and come away with a positive result.
This matchup is sure to be a thrilling one, with both teams desperate for a win to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Don’t miss out on what is sure to be an exciting and high-stakes game between Dortmund and Bologna. Stay tuned for all the action and drama as it unfolds.

Gasperini promises full UCL debut to Italy U19 talent: ‘He can be a nice surprise’
Gian Piero Gasperini has confirmed that Italy U19 talent Marco Palestra is set to earn his full Champions League debut when Atalanta take on Sturm Graz in the Champions League on Tuesday night, which he feels ‘can be a nice surprise’ for the supporters.
Atalanta are currently in 13th place in the Champions League standings after six matches, but could secure their position in the play-off round with a victory against the Austrian outfit on Tuesday night.
“It’s a Champions League game, we haven’t secured qualification yet, tomorrow could be a decisive day,” Gasperini said during his pre-match press conference on Monday evening, reported via TMW.
Gasperini: Atalanta ‘must keep concentration’ in ‘difficult’ Sturm Graz match

This will not be the first time the two sides have met in recent years.
“Last year we played two balanced games, we won 1-0 at home, but we’ve changed some players since then,” Gasperini added. “They are a team who are in first place in their country, these are all very balanced games. They have only picked up three points, but they have lost narrowly in all the games they’ve played.”
“I expected a fresh team, one that wants to play after a little period of inactivity. We have to be careful, keep our concentration and attention, we know it will be difficult. We can’t make mistakes, gaining qualification is not done yet.”

Gasperini confirmed that Nicolo Zaniolo will not be involved for Atalanta on Tuesday night, but insisted that the set-back is nothing serious and nothing to worry about.
“He’s had a bit of discomfort. It’s nothing serious, he won’t play tomorrow, but we’ll see afterwards,” he said.
Gasp was also full of praise for goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, who joined him for the pre-match press conferences.
“He has always been a young guy with good prospects. I think he has also matured as a person, with great humility, even in good moments like now. He always has a desire to improve.”
There was also a mini-update on Mateo Retegui and Juan Cuadrado: “Mateo’s numbers speak for themselves. He had a little stop, but he came back and was immediately decisive. Cuadrado was close to playing a bit more consistently, unfortunately he also suffered a bit of a set-back.”
And then came the confirmation that Palestra will play as a starter in the Champions League for the first time.
The 19-year-old played for 15 minutes off the bench against Young Boys earlier in the campaign and also earned his full senior debut in the 6-1 Coppa Italia victory over Cesena earlier in the season. Otherwise, he has only ever appeared off the bench for La Dea thus far.
“Tomorrow I will definitely play Palestra, I think the time has come to launch him in an important game. I think this guy can be a nice surprise.”
Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has promised a full UEFA Champions League debut to Italy U19 talent in an upcoming match. Gasperini believes that the young player has the potential to be a “nice surprise” in the prestigious competition. The promising youngster has been impressing Gasperini with his performances in training and in recent youth matches. Gasperini sees this as the perfect opportunity to give the young talent a chance to shine on the big stage and gain valuable experience.
Gasperini’s decision to give the young player a full UCL debut shows his trust and confidence in the player’s abilities. It also highlights Atalanta’s commitment to nurturing young talent and giving them opportunities to develop and grow within the club.
Fans will be eagerly anticipating the debut of this exciting Italy U19 talent and will be looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the team in their upcoming Champions League match. Gasperini’s promise is a testament to the club’s belief in the young player’s potential, and it will be exciting to see how he performs on the European stage.

Where Does Real Madrid Rank As UCL Champions?
The UEFA Champions League, previously known as the European Cup, is Europe’s most elite club competition.
The annual tournament, which has been held every season since 1955/56, initially featured only the champions of the continent’s top leagues. Over time, it has expanded to include more.
Since the competition’s inception, 23 teams have won the trophy, including Real Madrid. Notably, Los Blancos claimed the inaugural prize. They were also the most recent winners after overcoming Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Wembley Stadium in June 2024.
Given the competition’s long history, Real Madrid isn’t the only team to have claimed the title numerous times. Clubs like AC Milan, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool have also lifted the trophy on several occasions, cementing their status among Europe’s most elite teams.
So where does Los Blancos stand as UCL champions? Real Madrid are ranked 1st, as they are the only team in history to have won the competition 15 times.

Real Madrid clinched their first European Cup in the inaugural competition held during the 1955/56 season. Los Blancos cemented their dominance by winning the trophy for four consecutive seasons thereafter.
They claimed the prize once more in 1966, but remarkably didn’t lift the trophy again until 1998. The turn of the millennium saw Real Madrid win Europe’s biggest club prize in 2000 and 2002. They then had to wait 12 years before winning the trophy again in 2014.
After that triumph, Los Blancos won the competition three consecutive times in 2016, 2017, and 2018. They clinched it again in 2022 before lifting the trophy for the 15th time in 2024. That 2024 triumph also marked a record-setting fifth Champions League title for Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti.
