  • Betts, Rice Continue to Power UCLA’s Perfect Run


    The No. 1-ranked UCLA women’s basketball team continued its undefeated season on Thursday night, defeating Rutgers, 84-66. The Bruins (19-0, 7-0) showcased their dominance once again, marking their 18th consecutive double-digit victory and solidifying their perfect record in conference play.

    Junior center Lauren Betts delivered another masterful performance, tallying 25 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks. The 6-foot-7 center secured her 12th double-double of the season, further cementing her role as a cornerstone for UCLA. 

    Junior guard Kiki Rice added her own double-double, contributing 10 points and tying her season-high with 10 assists.

    After the game, Betts spoke about the team’s emphasis on mental health and personal growth, a cornerstone of UCLA’s program.

    “One of the reasons I wanted to come here is because I’m surrounded by such a great group of staff,” Betts said. “They understand how we are as people beyond basketball. They respect that there are times when we’re tired and mentally, we might not be able to do it. Taking that time to take care of ourselves and prioritize our mental well-being is super important.”

    Betts also reflected on her role as a representative of women’s basketball, inspired by her childhood idol, WNBA star Aliyah Boston.

    “Growing up, my favorite player to watch was Aliyah Boston. She’s just a baller,” Betts said. “Posts don’t always get recognized in the game, and she’s been such a great example of someone I want to look and play like. Her strength and skill set are incredible, and she’s someone I’ve admired since I was in middle school.”

    For Rice, the game also highlighted the importance of the sport’s growing popularity.

    “I remember growing up, I didn’t know much about the WNBA or who the best players were,” Rice said. “Now, it’s incredible to see so many young girls know about women’s college basketball and pro women’s basketball. The fan support is amazing, and it makes the game so fun. Playing in sold-out arenas this year has been incredible.”

    Rice acknowledged the challenges of the Bruins’ grueling schedule, including long road trips, but praised the team’s resilience.

    “We’re figuring out the mix of downtime and time together as a team,” she said. “It’s definitely challenging, but I think we’re doing a good job of handling it.”

    Cronin attributed Mara’s breakout to his consistency in practice and the matchup with Wisconsin’s size, which allowed him to thrive. 

    “If practice was open, I’d tell you how many times I look at the stat sheet after practice and he’s 10-for-10 or 12-for-14,” Cronin said. “He hasn’t had a fair whistle much all year; tonight, he got one. That stuff matters.”

    Mack also played a pivotal role, particularly in the second half, where he scored 15 of his 19 points. Cronin emphasized Mack’s ability to thrive in the physicality of Big Ten play.

    “He [Mack] reminds me of Jaren Cumberland, who was a great player for me at Cincinnati,” Cronin said. “When it’s time to play and it gets chippy, he gets really good. You have to have a guy like that on your team.”

    Beyond his scoring, Cronin praised Mack’s growing leadership.

    “He’s growing, talking a lot more, taking responsibility,” Cronin said. “Baz and I aren’t afraid to get in somebody’s face and tell them, ‘Let’s go.’ We need his toughness, and I need him to inject that into his teammates. It was obvious he was doing that tonight.”

    One of Cronin’s critical decisions came in the final defensive possession, where he subbed in junior forward William Kyle III, who had not played much in the second half. Kyle delivered, blocking a potential game-winning shot.

    “We wanted to switch everything,” Cronin said. “With Aday, you have to show and recover, and I didn’t want to get caught in a recovery. Will is a switch guy, and he can do it. Made me look smart.”

    “In leagues like this, you just have to win and get to the next one,” Cronin said. “You are always a week away from a losing streak, which we have found out, because you can play pretty good and still lose in this league.”

    As UCLA did with J. Michael Sturdivant in 2023, the Bruins were able to snag another young, promising pass catcher from their Northern California rivals, this time securing the services of Mikey Matthews.

    Matthews, a native of Irvine, California, has struggled to put up the numbers he has desired during his time at Utah and Cal but it should be noted both programs have had revolving quarterback situations and instability within their offensive coaching staffs.

    In fact, such instability paved Matthews’ way to Los Angeles as he is set to reunite with his wide receiver coach Burl Toler III. Toler was hired by DeShaun Foster this offseason after spending the last seven years coaching at Cal.

    Matthews is a dynamic wide receiver who poses a threat from the slot and outside. He’s dangerous with the ball in his hands, often breaking for big gains off of screen plays. He also exploits zone coverage with ease, constantly zipping under defenders for consistent gains.

    Under Tino Sunseri, Matthews will be a chess piece. Matthews will line up all over the field; he’ll be used heavily on RPO plays, and unlike in previous years, Matthews will have the opportunity to flash his speed downfield, potentially turning into a deep threat for the Bruins.

    Matthews has the type of speed that stretches defenses vertically and horizontally, opening up opportunities for others. His natural talents will also open up rushing opportunities if opposing linebackers become too concerned with his game.

    Only nine Bruins have eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. Expect Matthews to be the tenth name added to that list come next season. The only thing preventing him for breaking out as one of college football’s best was things/ elements out of his control.

    At UCLA, for the first time in his career, Matthews will be exposed to high-level offensive play designs, consistent play calling, and stability regarding his quarterback situation. While the Bruins have yet to name a starter, Matthews will not be dealing with such useless drama like the Cam Rising injury saga or the complex QB controversy at Cal.

    Under Tino Sunseri, Elijah Sarratt has had over 2,000 receiving yards over the past two years. This includes his time at James Madison and Indiana. Matthews needed the right scheme and the right coach. Now he’s got it.
