    Live30 updates

    • Final: Auburn 92, Ole Miss 82

The Tigers are still undefeated in SEC play and are now 20-1 on the season. What an impressive road win for Auburn; Bruce Pearl’s team has now won 13 straight games.

    • Final: K-State 80, Iowa State 61

The Cyclones couldn’t pull off the comeback and drop their second straight game to fall to 17-4.

Kansas State snaps No. 3 Iowa State’s 29-game home winning streak. The consecutive losses could potentially drop them out of the Top 10.

    • Auburn holding strong

The Tigers are up 6 despite a late charge from the Rebels to make things interesting.

There’s just 1:26 left in the game and Ole Miss is playing the fouling game now to extend it.

    • K-State handling Iowa State

The No. 3 Cyclones may be looking at their second straight loss. After falling to Arizona on Monday, the Cyclones are struggling late at home against the Wildcats. They’re down double digits with 5 minutes left in the game.

    • Auburn surges ahead

Ole Miss had made it a one-possession game and could’ve tied things up, but the Tigers have regained their footing and lead by 8 with 6 minutes left.

    • Ole Miss keeping it close

We are back for the second half in Oxford and the Rebels are still hanging around as the game ticks down toward the 12-minute mark.

Ole Miss guard Sean Pedulla is 7-for-10 with 18 points to lead all scorers.

    • Arizona’s Caleb Love, ASU’s BJ Freeman ejected after skirmish

Love and Freeman were ejected during the final minute of Saturday’s game. Replays showed Freeman headbutted Love and they were both ejected during Arizona’s 81-72 win.

Bobby Hurley then pulled his team off the court and didn’t shake Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd’s hand. It could’ve been to avoid further issues between the teams.

    • Halftime: Auburn 41, Ole Miss 34

The Tigers finished the half strong with Denver Jones and Johni Broome hitting 3-pointers to give them a 7-point lead. The duo have 13 points each.

    • Final: Missouri 88, Mississippi State 61

In another SEC clash of ranked teams, the Tigers just destroyed the Bulldogs in Starkville in a game that was never close. Caleb Grill led the way for Mizzou with 20 points; MSU’s Josh Hubbard scored a game-high 24.

    • As the first half winds down in Oxford, Ole Miss is keeping pace with Auburn. These are 2 of 10 SEC teams that are ranked as we head into February, and they’ve played a pretty even game thus far.

    • Arizona, ASU battling in the desert

In a game that’s had no shortage of highlights, the Wildcats and Sun Devils are trading monster dunks.

    • St. John’s tops Providence on late jumper!

The Red Storm hold on for the Big East win on a short jumper by Kadary Richmond with seconds left! It comes after Providence stormed back from a 52-34 deficit with 10 minutes left.

St. John’s has now won 14 of its last 15 games.

    • Auburn, Ole Miss trading blows early

The Tigers started off hot and have a 17-14 lead as the SEC clash creeps toward the halfway point in the first half. Auburn has four 3-pointers but has also turned the ball over six times already.

    • Final: Tennessee 64, Florida 44

Less than a month after Florida delivered a beatdown on Tennessee in Gainesville, the Vols now return the favor by handling the Gators in Knoxville. Chaz Lanier leads the way with 19 points for the Vols.

    • Vols putting on a clinic

This sequence pretty well sums up the second half in Knoxville. Tennessee’s defense forces a Florida mistake —> UT ball movement on the break leaves Florida grasping at straws.

Vols up 18 with 3:30 left.

    • Halftime: Missouri 45, Miss State 31

The Tigers are taking care of business so far in Starkville. Caleb Grill is leading the team at halftime with 12 points off four 3-pointers. MSU’s Josh Hubbard has 13 points.

    • Mizzou’s Grill hits from DEEP

Meanwhile, Missouri’s Caleb Grill just pulled up from the logo:

    • Tennessee pulling away!

The Vols’ lead is now up to 19 after a flurry from the home team. They are feeding off the crowd at this point and the Gators are flailing.

    • Florida down 13 with 10 minutes left

The Gators are still struggling to get much going offensively against the scrappy Vols’ D. They’re just 10-for-41 from the field and an abysmal 2-for-19 from 3-point range.

    • St. John’s, Providence locked in a battle

Elsewhere, Providence is hanging around with No. 15 St. John’s in a rough-and-tumble Big East showdown.

  • Duke v UNC basketball | Duke Blue Devils will host North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday in Durham

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — This weekend, one of the biggest rivalries in college basketball resumes.

No. 2 Duke, fresh off a tense win against NC State, will host another Tobacco Road rival on Saturday when North Carolina makes the short trip to Durham.

    Tip-off: 6:30 p.m.
    Where to watch: ESPN

In some ways, this matchup doesn’t quite have the luster of many years. But as is often the case in this most heated of rivalries, you can sometimes throw the records out the window.

    Bottom Line

No. 2 Duke hosts North Carolina after Cooper Flagg scored 28 points in Duke’s 74-64 win over the NC State Wolfpack.

The Blue Devils are 12-0 on their home court. Duke averages 80.0 points while outscoring opponents by 20.4 points per game.

The Tar Heels are 6-4 in conference games. North Carolina scores 81.7 points while outscoring opponents by 5.5 points per game.

Duke averages 80.0 points per game, 3.8 more points than the 76.2 North Carolina allows. North Carolina averages 7.3 made 3-pointers per game this season, 0.5 more makes than Duke gives up.

There were 130 tents housing more than 1,500 students set up at Duke as Cameron Crazies ramp it up for Saturday’s game against the Tar Heels.

The Blue Devils and Tar Heels meet Saturday for the first time in ACC play this season.

    Top Performers

Flagg is averaging 19.9 points, eight rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.5 steals for the Blue Devils. Kon Knueppel is averaging 14 points over the past 10 games.

RJ Davis is shooting 39.7% and averaging 17.6 points for the Tar Heels. Ian Jackson is averaging 2.0 made 3-pointers over the last 10 games.

    Last 10 Games

Blue Devils: 10-0, averaging 80.3 points, 36.2 rebounds, 17.3 assists, 4.7 steals and 3.7 blocks per game while shooting 48.7% from the field. Their opponents have averaged 59.2 points per game.

Tar Heels: 6-4, averaging 76.9 points, 33.0 rebounds, 15.1 assists, 4.9 steals and 3.9 blocks per game while shooting 47.1% from the field. Their opponents have averaged 72.6 points.

    Previous Matchup

The last time these teams met was in March last year in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Tar Heels secured the win 84-79 helping the program finish atop the ACC regular-season standings.

Cormac Ryan led North Carolina with 31 points, a career-high. He also closed out the game with two clinching free throws with 4.7 seconds left.

“We knew what it meant. We knew what was at stake,” Ryan said. “And to walk out of this building is always nice.”

Kyle Filipowski scored 23 points to lead the Blue Devils.

“We didn’t play our best basketball overall,” Filipowski said. “We’re still one of the best teams in the country. Our season’s not defined by UNC.”

    Krzyzewskiville

ABC11 stopped by Krzyzewskiville on Tuesday night, where hundreds of students were out camping ahead of the big game. In total, there are roughly 130 tents in K-Ville this year, housing about 1,500 students.

“One hundred percent worth it. I would do it again and again. If I could do this for the rest of my life, I’d be here every year doing this,” said Erika Pietrzak, a Duke senior camping for the fourth time.

The decked-out tents have become a fixture on Duke’s campus this time of year since the tradition started in the 1980s.

“It’s been a great experience. I get to hang out with my buddies in the tent. You know, sometimes it gets cold, but it’s a really fun time,” said Kiran Pathy, a sophomore camping for the first time.

While some students brave the elements for their tickets, others like Head Line Monitor Oliver Hess oversee the craziness in Krzyzewskiville.

“It’s a whole meritocracy-based system. We want the craziest of the Cameron crazies to be in the front row, to be the loudest, to show their enthusiasm the most,” Hess said.

That includes surprise checks at all hours of the night – and during the day – to make sure each tent has residents present.

ABC11’s Sean Coffey, Kate Rogerson, Tom George, and ESPN contributed to this report.

  • What’s wrong with UNC basketball? – Tar Heel Times

The bottom line: UNC can’t score in the post, doesn’t make 3-pointers at a high clip and is terrible on the offensive glass. Even with a roster littered with veteran guards, that’s a recipe for an underwhelming and drought-prone offense. Is there a fix? Not a full one, no — not this season at least. Carolina would be wise, though, to lean on more.

    What’s wrong with UNC basketball?

UNC basketball has long been a powerhouse in college basketball, but this season has been a major disappointment for fans. The Tar Heels have struggled to find their footing, with inconsistent performances and a lack of chemistry on the court.

One of the biggest issues facing UNC basketball this season is the lack of leadership on the team. With several key players leaving for the NBA draft last year, the Tar Heels have been left without a true leader to step up and guide the team. This has led to a lack of cohesion on the court and a struggle to find consistency in their play.

Another issue facing UNC basketball is their lack of depth on the roster. With injuries to key players and a lack of production from role players, the Tar Heels have been forced to rely heavily on their starters, leading to fatigue and a lack of energy late in games.

Coach Roy Williams has also come under fire for his coaching decisions this season. Many fans have questioned his lineup choices and in-game adjustments, leading to frustration and disappointment among the fan base.

Overall, it seems that a combination of factors has contributed to UNC basketball’s struggles this season. Whether it be a lack of leadership, depth, or coaching decisions, the Tar Heels will need to make some changes if they hope to turn their season around and make a run in the postseason.

  • Hubert Davis Approaching UNC Starting Lineup as Fluid Situation

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Hubert Davis made changes to North Carolina’s starting lineup during the weekend for the fourth time this season, and the coach said Monday that his team’s first group won’t be carved in stone as the Tar Heels move forward through ACC basketball league play.

Already small UNC downsized even more two days ago, returning 6-foot-3 Seth Trimble and 6-8 Ven-Allen Lubin to the opening lineup against Boston College, while shifting 6-6 Drake Powell and 6-10 Jalen Washington to the bench.

Those moves meant the Tar Heels rolled out four guards who are listed at 6-4 or shorter, with Elliot Cadeau, RJ Davis and Ian Jackson remaining in place in the starting lineup. UNC went on to rotate and use Powell (27 minutes of action off the bench) and Washington (26 minutes of action off the bench) plenty in different lineup combinations as the game extended into overtime.

“It’s a fluid situation,” Hubert Davis said Monday on the weekly videoconference call for ACC basketball coaches, when asked about his approach on starting assignments at this juncture of the season. “It’s matchups in regard to starting the game, the rotations. It is a fluid situation. It’s not fluid in some positions, but in other positions it is fluid. It’s all determined, really, on the rhythm of us and just the matchups in terms of who we’re playing. And so every game, I look at it that way. There isn’t going to be a set five. It will be determined by matchups and how guys are playing and rotations. There’s a number of factors that will go into who starts the game.”

Carolina (13-8 overall, 6-3 ACC) travels to tangle with Pittsburgh (13-6, 4-4) on Tuesday night, a matchup that closes the month of January for the Tar Heels and sets in motion a pivotal portion of the conference schedule. Across the next four games, UNC has road stops at Pitt, Duke and Clemson — all of them opportunities to secure profitable Quad 1 victories in the NET rankings — with a Feb. 8 home date against Pitt sandwiched in between. By the night of Feb. 10, when UNC plays at Clemson, the Tar Heels’ NCAA Tournament résumé will have taken on a clearer shape.

Lubin had put together a three-game stretch of serviceable contributions, averaging 8.7 points and 6.7 rebounds off the bench against California, Stanford and Wake Forest, prior to UNC overcoming Boston College 102-96 in overtime. Washington, though, became a major factor against BC with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. He tied a career high in scoring, and his playing time doubled Lubin’s 13 minutes of game action.

Meanwhile, Trimble logged 42 minutes of game time, the most for any Carolina player against BC. He was back in UNC’s starting lineup after an eight-game absence, and responded by delivering 18 points and a career-best 12 rebounds. Trimble supplied the Tar Heels’ last four points of regulation, including a left-handed turnaround in the lane that tied the score with 12.9 seconds remaining.

Ven-Allen Lubin, left, and Seth Trimble returned to the UNC starting lineup against Boston College. (Photo: Jim Hawkins / Inside Carolina)

Trimble started the first 12 games of the season, before suffering a concussion during a Dec. 28 practice session. After UNC survived BC, Trimble said Hubert Davis hadn’t mentioned his reasoning for changing the starting lineup this time around.

Cadeau and RJ Davis have started all 21 games for the Tar Heels. Veteran forward Jae’Lyn Withers started UNC’s first seven games of the season, until the freshman Powell replaced him during the Maui Invitational. Lubin has five starting assignments in the post, and Washington has compiled the other 16. The freshman Jackson has started nine straight games, and produced a scoring average of 18.6 points per game across that span.

“The four-guard lineup worked against UCLA really well, and then we practiced it a little bit after that,” Trimble said Saturday, referring to Carolina’s rally past the Bruins four days before Christmas. “But then I got hurt. So maybe we would’ve gone to that before now, but I don’t know. I’m just here to play, no matter what.”

Pitt certainly doesn’t lack for size with a starting group that includes 6-10 bruiser Cameron Corhen and 7-footer Guillermo Diaz Graham, along with 6-7 forward Zack Austin. The Panthers bring 6-5 guard Damian Dunn off the bench as a sixth man, and also rotate in 6-3 guard Brandin Cummings, 6-11 forward Jorge Diaz Graham and 6-8 forward Amsal Delalić as subs.

But Pitt has been out-rebounded in ACC league play by an average of 5.1 boards per game. And the Tar Heels, for all of their limitations down low, are out-rebounding their ACC opponents by a margin of 2.1 boards per game. Carolina has lost the rebounding battle to Louisville, Stanford and Wake Forest in its three conference defeats. UNC grabbed a healthy 36-23 rebounding advantage two days ago against Boston College, including 12-6 on the offensive glass.

Pitt’s pair of 6-3 guards, Jaland Lowe (17.6 points per game) and Ishmael Leggett (16.6 points per game), lead the team in scoring on the season. Near the end of last season, the lefty Lowe finished with 17 points against UNC in the ACC Tournament semifinals.

“What’s going to be huge for us the remainder of the ACC is, how consistent can we be?” Hubert Davis said Monday. “How consistent can we be offensively taking good shots, taking care of the basketball. How consistent can we be defensively getting stops, rebounding and defending without fouling. It just is what it is. That’s just going to be the key for us, our consistency.”

Hubert Davis Approaching UNC Starting Lineup as Fluid Situation

As the North Carolina Tar Heels prepare for the upcoming college basketball season, new head coach Hubert Davis is taking a flexible approach to determining his starting lineup. With a deep and talented roster at his disposal, Davis recognizes the importance of keeping his options open and adapting to different matchups and situations.

Davis has made it clear that he values competition and is willing to make changes to the starting lineup based on performance in practice and games. He has emphasized the need for players to earn their minutes and prove themselves on both ends of the court.

One player who has already caught Davis’ eye is freshman guard D’Marco Dunn, who has shown impressive scoring ability and defensive intensity in early practices. Dunn could potentially earn a spot in the starting lineup if he continues to impress.

Davis has also praised the leadership and experience of veterans like Leaky Black and Brady Manek, who could play key roles in the starting lineup depending on the opponent.

  • UNC Health, Duke Health partner on new children’s hospital

UNC Health and Duke Health, two of the world’s top academic health systems, are uniting to create a new children’s health system in North Carolina, featuring the state’s first freestanding hospital dedicated to caring for kids.

The two institutions filed articles of incorporation Jan. 28 with the state of North Carolina to establish NC Children’s, a private, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization. Plans for NC Children’s feature a 500-bed children’s hospital, a children’s outpatient care center and a children’s behavioral health center.

A freestanding children’s hospital in North Carolina has been a decade-long goal for both institutions. An initial $320 million investment into NC Children’s made by the state of North Carolina in early 2024 advanced discussions for a collaboration between both entities.

The comprehensive children’s health campus will be located at a yet-to-be identified site in the Triangle and will include a robust research and education enterprise backed by the medical schools of both universities.

The partnership aims to provide a higher volume of highly specialized pediatric care, enabling families from across the state to remain in North Carolina when seeking complex care.

“This is an unprecedented partnership between UNC Health and Duke Health, aimed at elevating the care that’s available for all children in North Carolina,” said Dr. Wesley Burks, CEO of UNC Health and dean of the UNC School of Medicine. “I’m delighted to work with our colleagues at Duke to create something that will make all North Carolinians proud and change lives for generations to come.”

“Children are the heart of our future, and families across North Carolina deserve access to the most comprehensive, highest quality care for their children,” said Dr. Craig Albanese, CEO of Duke University Health System. “This is a tremendous and unique opportunity to work together to reimagine how we deliver life-changing care to our region’s most vulnerable and we are grateful for the support of our state’s legislature.”

“This dedicated children’s hospital will reflect our commitment to providing best possible care for children – not only now but for generations to come,” said Dr. Mary E. Klotman, executive vice president for Health Affairs for Duke University, chief academic officer of Duke Health and dean of Duke University School of Medicine.

“It will foster groundbreaking pediatric research and first-class education and training for health care professionals,” Klotman said. “By uniting our institutions and disciplines, we can give children the healthy lives they deserve, achieve remarkable breakthroughs and nurture the future leaders of health care.”

The partnership between health systems will allow each of the clinical teams to expand their existing children’s clinical programs and research portfolios. The combined organization will create a destination for top pediatric subspecialists, researchers, residents and fellows.

“There is a great deal of mutual respect between our institutions, and we both want the same thing for the children of North Carolina — the best care, close to home,” Burks said.

The partners plan to break ground together on the new NC Children’s campus by 2027, with construction of the campus expected to take approximately six years.

    NC Children’s facts

    • Campus: NC Children’s will include 100+ acre campus in the Triangle, anchored by a 500-bed hospital along with an ambulatory surgical center, medical office building and behavioral health hospital. The campus will include play areas and rehabilitation facilities, translational research capabilities with a dedicated innovation/collaboration zone and a mixed-use infrastructure including the potential for hotels, retail, dining, etc.
    • Services: UNC Health and Duke University Health System will transfer all pediatric-related clinical services, programs and operations to NC Children’s.
    • Pediatric research and education: Pediatric research and education functions will remain with the UNC School of Medicine and Duke School of Medicine for the foreseeable future, although they may be conducted at NC Children’s once operational, particularly clinical teaching and research.
    • Affiliations: NC Children’s will have perpetual academic affiliations with the Duke and UNC schools of medicine, serving as both organizations’ pediatric teaching hospital.
    • Practice model: NC Children’s will develop a practice model for providers from both Duke and Carolina, allowing them to retain their existing academic appointments. NC Children’s will have an open medical staff, meaning that qualified providers may apply for privileges, even if they are not affiliated with either school.
    • Timeline: The hospital is expected to open in the early 2030s. Other core services such as the children’s behavioral health hospital, ambulatory surgical center or medical office building may open several years earlier.
