UNC basketball vs Wake Forest: Score prediction, scouting report

The UNC Tar Heels are set to face off against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in what promises to be an exciting ACC matchup. Both teams are coming off strong performances in their previous games, with UNC defeating Virginia and Wake Forest taking down Miami.

In terms of scouting report, UNC boasts a talented roster led by standout freshman Caleb Love and senior Garrison Brooks. Love has been a scoring machine for the Tar Heels, averaging 17 points per game, while Brooks provides a strong presence in the paint with his rebounding and shot-blocking abilities.

On the other hand, Wake Forest is led by guard Daivien Williamson, who has been a key playmaker for the Demon Deacons this season. Williamson is averaging 16 points per game and has been a reliable scorer for Wake Forest.

In terms of predictions, UNC has the edge in this matchup due to their overall talent and depth. I predict that the Tar Heels will come out on top with a final score of 80-70. However, Wake Forest is a scrappy team and could make it a close game if they are able to limit turnovers and play strong defense.

Overall, this game promises to be an exciting showdown between two ACC rivals. Tune in to see who comes out on top in this highly anticipated matchup.

  • Stanford MBB heads to UNC to battle Tarheels

On Saturday, at 11:15 AM PT on The CW, Stanford men’s basketball will take on the North Carolina Tarheels on the road. Stanford comes in at 11-6 overall and 3-3 in the ACC while North Carolina comes in at 12-6 overall and 5-1 in the ACC.

Last time out: On Wednesday, Stanford fell to Wake Forest by a final score of 80-67. Wake Forest guard Hunter Sallis took over for the Demon Deacons with 30 points.

RECAP: Stanford MBB falls to Wake Forest on the road

On North Carolina: Despite not being ranked or receiving votes in the AP Poll, the Tarheels are having a strong season overall. They’ve just not been able to win a couple of key games that could have them ranked. They lost to No. 9 Kansas by a three points on the road and No. 12 Michigan State by three points in overtime at Hawaii. Had they won both of those games, they’d likely be ranked right now. In league play, the Tarheels have wins over Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, SMU, NC State, and most recently Cal. Their lone ACC loss is to Louisville on the road.

The Tarheels are led by graduate student guard R.J. Davis (17.2 points & 4.0 rebounds) and freshman guard Ian Jackson (15.7 points). Both guys are doing a great job of putting the ball in the basket and being a solid one-two punch. Two additional players are also scoring in double figures: Junior guard Seth Trimble (12.9 points & 4.7 rebounds) and sophomore guard Elliot Cadeau (10.3 points & 5.9 assists).

As a team, the Tarheels average 82.9 points per game on 47.2% shooting from the field, 32.8% shooting from 3-point range, and 74.6% shooting from the foul line. They average 38.5 rebounds, 14.2 assists, 6.7 steals, 4.2 blocks, and 11.3 turnovers. They also average a +2.1 rebound margin and a +0.2 turnover margin per game. Their opponents average 76.1 points per game on 41.7% shooting from the field, 31.9% shooting from 3-point range, and 73.0% shooting from the foul line.

Keys to the game: For Stanford, the first thing they need to do is hold their own on the glass. North Carolina out-rebounded Cal by +12 on Wednesday. That was a big part of the Tarheels’ success against the Golden Bears. If Stanford can at least be within three rebounds of North Carolina, that would help a lot. If it’s a +4 or greater rebound advantage for the Tarheels, it’ll be tough for them to win this game.

The second thing Stanford needs to do is get more help from their bench. Against Wake Forest, Stanford had just eight bench points. They need guys like Benny Gealer and Chisom Okpara to deliver off the bench. If Stanford can get 16+ points off the bench, double of what they had against Wake Forest, that would be huge.

Finally, Maxime Raynaud needs to have a big outing. If Stanford is to win games on the road, they need their star to ball out. If Raynaud scores 20+ points and gets 10+ rebounds, they’ll have a chance. If he has less than that, it’s hard to see where they get that extra production from even if the bench does its job.

Prediction: Oddly enough, I feel like Stanford has a chance to win this game. North Carolina has had some close wins lately, so there’s an opportunity here for the Cardinal. That said, I still have to pick the Tarheels to win. I’ll say 80-68 is the final score.

Holding Court: UNC Football Takes Big Swing With Belichick

UNC Football, Rarely Aggressive, Takes Biggest Swing With Belichick

    By David Glenn

The University of North Carolina, which has been playing football since 1888, has never paid its head football coach at the top end of the college market.

    Until now.

Last month, UNC finalized a five-year, $50 million contract that immediately made legendary National Football League coach Bill Belichick one of only eight men who are guaranteed to make at least $10 million in 2025.

Coach, School, Conference — 2024 Compensation

    1. Kirby Smart^!, Georgia, SEC — $13.3 million
    2. Dabo Swinney^!, Clemson, ACC — $11.1 million
    3. Steve Sarkisian!, Texas, SEC — $10.6 million
    4. Lincoln Riley, Southern Cal, Big Ten — $10+ million
    5. Ryan Day!, Ohio State, Big Ten — $10+ million
    6. Bill Belichick, North Carolina, ACC — $10 million*
    7. Kalen DeBoer, Alabama, SEC — $10 million
    8. Mike Norvell, Florida State, ACC — $10 million
    9. Brian Kelly, LSU, SEC — $9.9 million
    10. Mark Stoops, Kentucky, SEC — $9+ million

^ — has won FBS national championship

! — team made 2024 College Football Playoff

    * — 2025 compensation (others 2024)

The Belichick hire is not the first time UNC has taken an uber-aggressive approach with a football coaching search, but it’s certainly an extremely rare development historically.

    image via UNC Athletic Communications

After the 1955, 2006 and 2018 seasons, as in December of last year, the Tar Heels bucked their long-time trend of making more conservative hires (e.g., Group of Five head coaches, power conference or NFL assistant coaches, promoting from within) for their top gridiron position.

While none of the previous three splashy newcomers (Jim Tatum, Butch Davis, Mack Brown Part Two) led to a conference championship for Carolina, in each case a proven winner produced much better records than his predecessor.

When the Tar Heels posted losing records in each of their first three seasons (1953-55) as a member of the newly created Atlantic Coast Conference, UNC athletic director Chuck Erickson hired Jim Tatum, a former Carolina assistant coach who had led Maryland to four top-10 seasons, including the 1953 national championship.

Tatum, a star football and baseball player for UNC in the 1930s, reportedly took a pay cut — from $18,500 to $15,000 — when he left the Terrapins for the Tar Heels, obviously long before college athletics had become a lucrative business enterprise.

Sadly, after just three seasons leading the Tar Heels (the latter two included time in the national Top 25), Tatum died in Chapel Hill on July 23, 1959, at only 46 years old. The suspected cause was Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

More recently, UNC twice more opted for a more aggressive approach on the gridiron, with the hirings of Davis (by AD Dick Baddour) and Brown (by AD Bubba Cunningham) prior to the 2007 and 2019 seasons, respectively.

Davis ultimately led the Tar Heels to three straight 8-5 seasons (all including bowl trips), and Brown just took the Heels to six straight postseason games, including a top-25 finish in 2020 and an ACC title game appearance in 2022.

Even the excitement inspired by the Davis and Brown hirings, though, paled in comparison to that surrounding Belichick’s arrival, which ESPN immediately described as “one of the most stunning and compelling moves in college football history.”

Davis most recently had spent four seasons (2001-04) as a head coach in the NFL, with the Cleveland Browns. Prior to that, he had helped build the Miami Hurricanes into a national championship-caliber program, both as an assistant coach (1984-88) and as the Canes’ head coach (1995-2000). His final Miami team finished #2 in the national rankings, and the mega-talented squad he left behind for his successor, Larry Coker, finished 12-0 and captured the 2001 national championship.

Brown, who was a young (37), inexpensive, up-and-coming head coach the first time he was hired at Carolina, was a far more proven commodity when the Tar Heels lured him away from his ESPN broadcasting job prior to the 2019 season. During his 16-year tenure (1998-2013) at Texas, Brown had led the Longhorns to the 2005 national championship and a stunning 10 consecutive seasons (2000-09) where they finished #13 or higher in the national rankings.

Carolina paid both Davis and Brown fairly well by the standards of the time, but the Tar Heels certainly didn’t break the bank, relatively speaking.

Davis, who was almost 55 years old when the Tar Heels hired him in November 2006, made about $2 million per year during his four seasons in Chapel Hill (2007-10). That compensation level did not rank among the top 20 in college football that year, when Alabama legend Nick Saban ($6 million) and Texas’ Brown ($5.2 million) were the only two head coaches above the $5 million mark.

More recently, Brown did make about $5 million per year with the Tar Heels, but the market had changed so dramatically over the past two decades that his compensation ranked outside the top 40 in major college football, meaning in the bottom half of the 66 head coaches in the Power Four conferences (plus Notre Dame).

UNC did upgrade many other aspects of its football-related resources and commitment during Brown’s more recent tenure, but overall the Tar Heels still weren’t spending anywhere near the level seen at college football’s traditional powerhouse programs.

At $10 million per year, believe it or not, Belichick is taking a major pay cut from what he was making in the latter part of his legendary career with the New England Patriots, whom he led to six Super Bowl championships and scores of other success. That professional-level number ultimately exceeded $20 million per year.

At the same time, UNC just doubled the highest amount it has ever paid any of its football coaches, it’s paying top-10 money to its head coach for the very first time, and it’s dramatically upgraded the program’s Name-Image-Likeness budget, among many other things, in preparation for the upcoming 2025 season.

That sort of gridiron commitment, financially speaking and otherwise, is a truly unprecedented development in the history of Carolina football.

In a surprising move, the University of North Carolina football program has made a big swing by hiring former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick as a consultant for the upcoming season.

Belichick, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Tar Heels program. His defensive expertise and strategic mind are sure to make an impact on the team’s performance this season.

While some may question the decision to bring in a coach from the professional ranks, UNC head coach Mack Brown sees it as an opportunity to learn from one of the best in the business. Belichick’s presence is sure to raise the level of competition and intensity within the program, as well as provide valuable insights and strategies for the coaching staff and players.

With Belichick on board, the Tar Heels are poised to make a strong push for the ACC title and a spot in the College Football Playoff. Fans are excited to see how this partnership will unfold and are hopeful that it will lead to success on the field.

  • Ex-Patriots CB has bold prediction for Bill Belichick’s 1st year at UNC

Ex-Patriots CB has bold prediction for Bill Belichick’s 1st year at UNC

The Bill Belichick era can now officially begin at UNC after the Tar Heels suffered a 27-14 loss to UConn in the Fenway Bowl. And while the 72-year-old has never coached at the college level, one of his former players and Super Bowl champion offered up a bold prediction for Year 1.

“Bill Belichick will lead UNC to the College Football Playoff,” Jason McCourty said during Wednesday’s episode of ESPN’s “First Take.” “Yes, that is on his Christmas list that he is asking Santa — that you saw him post on his social media. That is right. Bill Belichick is now going the social media route to get recruits to come on campus. He wants all the good players.

“And I think he is going to shake things up,” he continued. “Bring in a general manager with him. Getting guys to come over (in) the transfer portal, and show them how to win football games. Bill Belichick. Playoffs. Those two words just go together.”

Belichick had a run of success in the NFL that spanned several decades and includes eight Super Bowl titles — six with the New England Patriots. McCorurty played under Belichick for three seasons and won one Super Bowl, so he’s seen first-hand how he runs a championship-caliber team and gets the most out of each player.

It remains to be seen how Belichick will fare at UNC. The Tar Heels went 6-7 in 2024, but his staff will include some familiar faces to him. His son, Steve Belichick, will be the defensive coordinator and Mike Lombardi, a close friend of Belichick’s, was named the program’s general manager. Freddie Kitchens, who took over for the fired Mack Brown, will remain on the staff.

Belichick’s first game with the Tar Heels is set for Aug. 30 against the TCU Horned Frogs, and it will certainly be interesting to see how his freshman season ends up.

In a recent interview with former New England Patriots cornerback, Aqib Talib, he made a bold prediction for Bill Belichick’s first year as the head coach of the University of North Carolina football team. Talib, who played under Belichick during his time with the Patriots, believes that the legendary coach will lead the Tar Heels to a national championship in his inaugural season.

Talib praised Belichick’s coaching prowess and attention to detail, stating that he has no doubt Belichick will transform the UNC football program into a powerhouse in college football. He emphasized Belichick’s ability to develop players and create a winning culture, which he believes will be key to the team’s success.

Many have questioned Belichick’s decision to leave the NFL and take on a college coaching role, but Talib is confident that it will be a successful move for the seasoned coach. He believes that Belichick’s experience and leadership will be invaluable in guiding the Tar Heels to a championship.

It remains to be seen if Talib’s prediction will come true, but one thing is for certain – Bill Belichick’s tenure at UNC will be one to watch.

  • UNC Completes Non-Conference Slate In Home Win Vs. Campbell

UNC Completes Non-Conference Slate In Home Win Vs. Campbell

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina picked up its second consecutive win on Sunday to close out the calendar year and its non-conference schedule. The Tar Heels (8-5, 1-0) led by as many as 29 points in securing a 97-81 victory against Campbell (5-7) at the Smith Center.

It took a while for North Carolina to create true separation from the Fighting Camels. UNC led by 11 at halftime, but Campbell hung around and kept the game within single digits for most of the first half. The Tar Heels shot 4-17 from 3-point range in the first half, and the offense was fairly stagnant in the halfcourt. UNC missed its final 12 3-pointers of the half. The Tar Heels began to expand their lead early in the second half with a Jalen Washington dunk, an Elliot Cadeau floater and a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer from Ian Jackson that put them ahead by 16. North Carolina secured its first 20-point lead at the 13:11 mark when RJ Davis connected on a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer on a pass from Cadeau.

UNC found most of its success when going inside, scoring 48 points in the paint. North Carolina got the pick and roll game working at times with Cadeau and Davis at guard. Cadeau, who recorded the first double-double of his career, finished the game with a career-high 12 assists and Davis dished out five.

Colby Duggan led the way for Campbell with a career-high 32 points, which is the most that an opponent has scored on UNC’s defense this year.

    (Photo: Jim Hawkins/Inside Carolina, 247Sports)

    RJ Davis Finds Rhythm

Davis found the range early on Sunday, making his first three 3-pointers of the game. His second shot from long range gave him 300 for his career, and it moved him to No. 1 on UNC’s all-time list. He passed his assistant coach Marcus Paige, who finished his career with 299 makes from distance. The fifth-year guard finished the game with 23 points on 5-10 shooting from three. He set a new season-high for 3-pointers made this season, as he made four against Dayton in the Maui Invitational.

Davis, who is third on UNC’s all-time scoring list, entered the game shooting 25.5% (24-94) from 3-point range. Last season, he set a school record with 113 made 3-pointers and he shot 39.8% from outside.

    Another Lineup Change For UNC

Hubert Davis started freshmen standouts Jackson and Drake Powell against the Fighting Camels. Sunday marked the first time since 2021 that the Tar Heels started two freshmen in a game, as Roy Williams started Caleb Love and Kerwin Walton in a Round of 64 game against Wisconsin. Jackson finished with a career-high 26 points on 9-15 shooting on Sunday, and Powell added 12 points. Jackson recorded his third 20-point game of the season and his second in a row.

North Carolina used its fourth unique starting lineup of the season on Sunday. Jackson started for the first time this season, and Washington made his first start since the team’s game against Michigan State in Maui. Seth Trimble was out of the lineup with an upper body injury.

    Next on the schedule

North Carolina will leave town for the first of a two-game road trip this week, as it will face Louisville on Wednesday at 6 p.m. inside the KFC Yum! Center for a New Year’s Day matchup. UNC won last season’s matchup at home 86-70, as former Cardinal Jae’Lyn Withers recorded a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double off the bench.

Louisville (8-5, 1-1) won its most recent game 78-76 at home against Eastern Kentucky, with Noah Watterman’s go-ahead layup putting the Cardinals over the top. Louisville is currently the No. 59 team in the NET rankings, making Wednesday’s game a Quad 1 winning opportunity for the Tar Heels. A road game against an opponent ranked between 1-75 qualifies as a Quad 1 matchup. UNC defeated Georgia Tech earlier this month to open conference play, and the conference schedule will pick up steam after Wednesday.

UNC leads the all-time series against Louisville 20-7, and the Tar Heels have won the last five meetings.

The University of North Carolina Tar Heels completed their non-conference slate with a dominant home win against Campbell University. The Tar Heels showcased their talent and depth as they cruised to a convincing victory.

UNC’s offense was firing on all cylinders, with multiple players contributing to the scoring effort. The defense also stood strong, holding Campbell to a low scoring output throughout the game.

The win gives the Tar Heels momentum heading into conference play, where they will look to continue their winning ways. UNC fans are excited for what the rest of the season holds, as the team looks poised for success.

Stay tuned for more updates on the UNC men’s basketball team as they continue their journey towards a successful season. Go Tar Heels!

  • What happened to Mack Brown at UNC? Tar Heels parted ways with coach

What happened to Mack Brown at UNC? Tar Heels parted ways with coach

After five seasons at the helm of the University of North Carolina football program, Mack Brown and the Tar Heels have decided to part ways. Brown, who returned to UNC in 2018 for his second stint as head coach, led the team to a 6-7 record this season, falling short of expectations.

The decision to part ways with Brown comes after a disappointing season that saw the Tar Heels struggle on both sides of the ball. Despite a strong start to the season, including wins over ranked opponents like Wake Forest and NC State, UNC faltered down the stretch, losing five of their last six games.

Brown, who previously led the Tar Heels to a 69-46 record and five bowl appearances during his first stint as head coach from 1988 to 1997, had high hopes for the program upon his return. However, after failing to meet expectations over the past few seasons, both Brown and the university decided it was time for a change.

UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham expressed his gratitude for Brown’s contributions to the program, stating, “Mack Brown is a legend in the world of college football and we are thankful for all he has done for the University of North Carolina. However, after careful consideration, we have decided to go in a different direction for the future of our football program.”

Bill Belichick’s Girlfriend Jordon Hudson Shares Project Inspired by His UNC Job

Jordon Hudson is getting ready to cheer on her boyfriend, Bill Belichick, at his coaching job.

As Belichick, 72, is set to begin a new role as head football coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the 24-year-old Hudson was seemingly inspired to do a project based on her beau’s new team, the Tar Heels.

On Thursday, Dec. 26, the former Bridgewater State University cheerleader shared photos to her Instagram Stories of a late-night creative project she was working on — bedazzling the Chapel Hill logo on a sweatshirt.

Hudson shared three photos of the sweater through the bedazzling process, including the finished product.

“Two…eternities…later,” she wrote over the pictures, adding a location tag for Chapel Hill in North Carolina.

“This is what I like to call a ‘Night Owl Project,’ ” Hudson wrote at the bottom of her Stories.

A source close to the couple told PEOPLE earlier this month that Belichick will “put his all into the new coaching job,” and that he “needed to get back to work” after parting ways with the New England Patriots early this year.

“Now that he will be coaching that is at the top of his list … He has an above-ideal situation for his experience and personality,” the source added.

Another insider said that the job at Chapel Hill will only enhance Belichick and Hudson’s relationship.

“Jordon is also a busy woman with a lot going on,” said this source. “So I don’t see this doing anything but enhancing their solid relationship.”

Belichick began seeing Hudson in early 2023 after his split from Linda Holliday, his girlfriend of 16 years.

Hudson was a college student at the time. Prior to that, Belichick was married to Debby Clarke Belichick, with whom he shares son Stephen and daughter Amanda.

“I am excited for the opportunity at UNC-Chapel Hill,” Belichick said in a statement after announcing he had accepted the position in North Carolina.

“I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured those times,” he said. “I have always wanted to coach in college and now I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill.”

Belichick’s father, Steve Belichick, was an assistant coach for the Tar Heels from 1953 to 1955.

Jordan Hudson, the girlfriend of legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick, recently shared a project inspired by his new job as the head coach of the University of North Carolina football team.

In a post on social media, Hudson revealed that she has been working on a series of paintings that pay tribute to Belichick’s new coaching gig. The paintings feature vibrant colors and intricate designs that symbolize the energy and passion that Belichick brings to the field.

Hudson explained that she wanted to create something special to commemorate this exciting chapter in Belichick’s career, and she hopes that her artwork will serve as a source of inspiration for both him and his players.

Fans of Belichick and the UNC football team have been eagerly anticipating the start of the new season, and Hudson’s project is sure to generate even more excitement as kickoff approaches.

Stay tuned for more updates on Belichick’s journey with the Tar Heels, and be sure to check out Hudson’s stunning artwork to see her unique take on this new chapter in his coaching legacy.
