  • Newcastle boss Howe still unclear on Almiron, Kelly

The merry dance that is the effect of PSR on Newcastle United’s transfer activity continues unabated throughout January, much to nobody’s delight.

Those three letters (profit, sustainability, rules) which we all have all had to accept are essential to modern football, yet that none of us truly understand because we do not have access to all of the financials involved.

In the summer, Newcastle were able to make a strong effort to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, who would have cost upwards of £50million. But now the focus is on potential exits, with Miguel Almiron the most likely to depart, and some supporters are questioning why that is the case. Howe said this morning:

“It’s not as clear as everyone will make out. There’s not a pot of money there just waiting to be spent.”

Even he accepted his answer was about as comprehensible as Newcastle’s turnaround in form, which has seen them jump from 12th to fourth inside a month and able to set a new club record for consecutive victories in all competitions (10) against Bournemouth tomorrow.

Almiron, as things stand, is set to be on the bench for that lunchtime kick-off, despite Atlanta United being in negotiations to re-sign the winger. While not denying Almiron could still leave this month, Howe insisted nobody inside Newcastle wants to lose players this month, but the PSR reality is that they are best placed doing so.

Lloyd Kelly is less likely to depart, despite his lack of minutes, and Howe showed his irritation at news of a bid being rejected this week leaking out, describing the “rumours” as being “club-driven from Fenerbahce, not from the player”.

The speculation will not end there though, with more than a fortnight still to go in this window.

And unfortunately, I’ll be writing and you’ll be reading those three annoying letters — PSR — time and again during that time…

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has admitted that he is still unclear on the futures of midfielders Miguel Almiron and Matty Longstaff.

Almiron has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park in the January transfer window, with clubs in Europe reportedly interested in the Paraguayan international. However, Howe has said that he has not yet made a decision on the 27-year-old’s future.

Similarly, young midfielder Matty Longstaff’s future at Newcastle is also uncertain, with reports suggesting that he could leave on loan in search of more regular first-team football.

Speaking to reporters, Howe said, “I’m still evaluating the squad and the players we have. Miguel and Matty are both talented players, but I need to assess what is best for the team moving forward. I will sit down with them both and discuss their futures in the coming weeks.”

Newcastle fans will be eager to see what decisions Howe makes regarding the two players, as they look to push up the Premier League table in the second half of the season.

  • Situation unclear about India skipper Rohit Sharma travelling to Pakistan for Champions Trophy captains event

New Delhi [India], : There is no clarity on whether India captain Rohit Sharma will travel to Pakistan for the ICC’s official captains’ call to mark the start of the 2025 Champions Trophy, according to ESPNcricinfo.

Situation unclear about India skipper Rohit Sharma travelling to Pakistan for Champions Trophy captains event

The upcoming ninth edition of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy is scheduled to take place in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates from February 19 to March 9.

The captains’ event, which typically occurs before the tournament, is tentatively planned for February 16 or 17 in Karachi. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has not yet received an official communication on the matter from the International Cricket Council , ESPNcricinfo reported.

“It [Rohit travelling to Pakistan] has not yet been discussed. It is not on the agenda yet,” Devjit Saikia, the BCCI’s newly-appointed secretary, told ESPNcricinfo.

Due to strained political relations between the two countries, India has not toured Pakistan since 2008, when they participated in the Asia Cup.

The two arch-rivals last played a bilateral series in India during the 2012-13 season, which featured white-ball matches. Since then, India and Pakistan have mostly faced each other in ICC tournaments and Asia Cups. Notably, Pakistan traveled to India for the 2016 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup.

In an official capacity, no Indian player has visited Pakistan in recent years. However, BCCI officials have traveled to Pakistan.

In 2023, BCCI president Roger Binny and vice-president Rajiv Shukla attended an official PCB dinner in Lahore during the Asia Cup. The invitation was extended by then PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf.

In a separate development, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board would comply with all jersey guidelines for the ICC Champions Trophy.

This clarification follows reports suggesting that the BCCI might exclude the tournament host, Pakistan’s name, from their jerseys, as India will play all their Champions Trophy matches in Dubai.

  • Payton Sandfort’s status remains unclear ahead of Minnesota

IOWA CITY, Iowa– The Hawkeyes might be shorthanded going into a critical stretch. After playing only eight minutes against UCLA, Iowa star Payton Sandfort was sidelined for the remainder of the contest due to a shoulder and ankle injuries.

Sandfort was fresh off a Big Ten Co-Player of the Week honor after having some ridiculous scoring spells in second-halves. If Sandfort can’t start, don’t be surprised to see Ladji Dembele or Pryce Sandfort take his place.

The Waukee native has been one of the biggest vocal leaders of this year’s team and really saw his leadership role increase towards the end of last season. One of the reasons he elected to return to Iowa was to put them back in the NCAA Tournament after narrowly missing it in 2024.

Iowa has done a great job of defending home court and they’ll be tasked with a pair of showdowns this week. After going 0-2 during the west coast trip, the Hawkeyes are eyeing a way to get back in the win column and regain momentum.

The Hawkeye offense hasn’t been the issue for them this season. Iowa is leading the Big Ten and ranks third nationally, averaging 88.4 points per game. The team’s
50.8 field goal percentage is second-best in the league (fifth in country).

According to BartTorvik, Iowa’s defensive efficiency in conference games this year ranks No. 284 in college basketball. Three different teams in the past five games have shot at least 62 percent from the field while scoring at least 94 points.

Sandfort’s status remains up in the air, but we’ll get a good idea once warmups begin.

The Gophers snapped a four-game losing streak with an 84-81 overtime victory over No. 20 Michigan on Jan. 16 in Minneapolis. Minnesota is 9-9 overall and 1-6 in Big Ten play. Minnesota is 0-3 in true road games this season and 0-5 in games played away from Williams Arena.

The Hawkeyes have won six straight and eight of the last nine meetings over the Gophers, including six straight in Iowa City.

Payton Sandfort’s status remains unclear ahead of Minnesota

Highly touted basketball recruit Payton Sandfort’s status remains up in the air as the Minnesota Golden Gophers prepare for their upcoming season. The 6’7” forward from Waukee, Iowa has been dealing with an undisclosed injury that has kept him sidelined for much of the offseason.

Sandfort, who committed to Minnesota back in June, was expected to make an immediate impact for the team with his sharpshooting and versatile skillset. However, with his status still uncertain, it remains to be seen when he will be able to take the court for the Golden Gophers.

Head coach Ben Johnson has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of Sandfort’s injury, only stating that the team is taking a cautious approach to his recovery. With the season quickly approaching, fans are anxiously awaiting an update on when they can expect to see Sandfort in action.

As the Golden Gophers gear up for what promises to be an exciting season, all eyes will be on Sandfort and his potential return to the court. Stay tuned for more updates on his status as the season approaches.

  • Biden says the ERA is ‘the law of the land’ but the next steps are unclear : NPR

President Biden on Friday declared that he considers the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution is “the law of the land,” a surprising declaration that does not have any formal force of effect, but that is being celebrated by its backers, who plan to rally today in front of the National Archives.

The amendment would need to be formally published or certified to come into effect by the National Archivist — and when or if that will happen is unclear.

The executive branch doesn’t have a direct role in the amendment process, and Biden is not going to order the archivist to certify and publish the ERA, the White House told reporters on a conference call. A senior administration official said that the archivist’s role is “purely ministerial” in nature, meaning that the archivist is required to publish the amendment once it is ratified.

The 1970s-era amendment passed by Congress would guarantee men and women equal rights under the law, but it took until 2020 for enough state legislatures to ratify it, missing a deadline set by Congress by a long shot.

But Biden said he believed the ERA had cleared the hurdle to be added to the Constitution as its 28th Amendment when Virginia ratified it five years ago. He did not explain why he waited until the waning days of his presidency to take action.

“It is long past time to recognize the will of the American people. In keeping with my oath and duty to Constitution and country, I affirm what I believe and what three-fourths of the states have ratified: the 28th Amendment is the law of the land, guaranteeing all Americans equal rights and protections under the law regardless of their sex,” Biden said in a brief written statement.

His move comes after a campaign from Democratic lawmakers, including Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., who has said it would be a way to protect abortion rights. Gillibrand has said she expects that the matter will end up in the Supreme Court.

The issue has long been the subject of legal controversy. In 2020, the National Archivist – who is charged with making constitutional amendments official – declined to certify the amendment, citing an opinion from the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel. The department said it considered the ERA to be expired after a 1982 ratification deadline was missed. In 2022, the Office of Legal Counsel released an opinion affirming that 2020 decision.

Last month, the archivist said that Congress and the courts would need to take further action to lift the deadline for the amendment to be ratified – arguing that it could not legally certify and publish the ERA.

In a recent statement, President Joe Biden affirmed his support for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), calling it “the law of the land.” However, he also acknowledged that the next steps in fully ratifying the amendment are currently unclear.

The ERA, which aims to guarantee equal rights under the law regardless of sex, was first proposed in 1923 and finally passed by Congress in 1972. However, the amendment fell short of the necessary ratification by 38 states by the deadline set by Congress in 1982.

Despite this setback, efforts to revive the ERA have gained momentum in recent years, with three additional states ratifying the amendment in recent years. However, legal challenges and questions surrounding the deadline for ratification have left the amendment’s future uncertain.

Biden’s statement signals his commitment to advancing gender equality and ensuring that the ERA is fully incorporated into the Constitution. However, the path forward remains unclear, with potential legal battles and political obstacles still standing in the way.

As advocates continue to push for the ERA’s ratification, the debate over its significance and impact on gender equality in the United States is likely to intensify. Stay tuned for updates on this ongoing issue.
