  • Larian scrambles to find out who exactly put Patch 8 on the PS5 early, meanwhile I, a PC unfortunate, rattle the bars of my enclosure

1/27/25: Scuttlebutt on the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit is that the unintended early update to Patch 8 has already been yoinked and cannot be downloaded if you haven’t grabbed it already. Meanwhile, Larian has released a guide to rolling back to Patch 7 if you were affected by the bug—saves on this version of Patch 8 are incompatible with Patch 7, and the build is “unsupported” according to Larian. Users on the subreddit who made it in describe it as unstable and prone to crashing.

As PC Gamer is wont to do, we’ve been posting a lot about how our device of choice has won the console war. I would like to unilaterally, with authority that I do not have (and have not asked for), state that we’ve lost. Catastrophically, because the PlayStation 5 has randomly received Patch 8 of Baldur’s Gate 3 early and I’m volcanic with jealousy.

The only saving grace is that it’s not, er, actually supposed to be this way. In an announcement made to the Baldur’s Gate 3 Discord, a senior community manager by the name of Salo writes: “No, the Patch 8 stress test hasn’t yet begun. Yes, PS5 players do currently have access to Patch 8.”

This seems corroborated by, well, the internet—here’s one player who’s downloading it, here’s another. Here’s a PS5 player on the Discord server realising that they had, in fact, downloaded Patch 8 of the game with a: “Hexblade is new, right? Because that means that update 8 is in fact, out right now.”

(Image credit: Baldur’s Gate 3 Discord)

This has Larian, broadly-speaking, on high alert—Larian’s Tumblr account (yes, it’s official, no, I don’t know why it’s called John Larian and why the header image is like that) also shared what appears to be a Slack message titled: “Hello! Welcome to the patch-8-is-on-ps5-for-some-reason-help-help-ahhh task group.”

In a shocking turn of events, Larian Studios is on a wild goose chase to uncover the mystery behind who leaked Patch 8 for Divinity: Original Sin 2 on the PS5 ahead of schedule. While the developers scramble to contain the fallout and address the unintended consequences of the premature release, I, a humble PC player, can only sit and watch from the sidelines as I rattle the bars of my enclosure in frustration.

As a devoted fan of the game, I can’t help but feel left out and envious of those lucky few who were able to experience the new content and features before it was officially ready for public consumption. The temptation to join them and play the latest patch on a different platform is strong, but I must resist and wait patiently for the official release on PC.

In the meantime, I can only hope that Larian Studios will swiftly resolve the situation and ensure that all players, regardless of platform, can enjoy the game to its fullest potential. Until then, I’ll continue to bide my time and eagerly anticipate the moment when I can finally dive back into the world of Divinity: Original Sin 2 with Patch 8 in hand.

  • Unfortunate injury gifts Lakers opportunity to transition to new starting lineup

One of the most challenging aspects of being a head coach is breaking the news to a player that their spot in the starting lineup is being taken from them. It’s an experience JJ Redick has already become familiar with during his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Basketball works in mysterious ways, however, and Redick may have just been simultaneously gifted an opportunity and burdened with an uncomfortable conversation.

Rui Hachimura unfortunately missed the Lakers’ most recent game against the Golden State Warriors. Hachimura was dealing with a caf injury that shouldn’t keep him out all that long, but has resulted in at least a temporary absence.

In his place, Dorian Finney-Smith made his first start as a member of the purple and gold—and the Lakers received a preview of what they could become.

With Finney-Smith starting, the Lakers played impressive defense en route to a 118-108 victory over the Warriors. The win pushed Los Angeles to 25-18, which is its best record through 43 games since the COVID-shortened 2020-21 campaign.

Hachimura hasn’t necessarily done anything to lose his place as a starter, but the chance to seamlessly add Finney-Smith to the lineup can’t be taken for granted.

Dorian Finney-Smith is the perfect Lakers starter

Thus far in 2024-25, Los Angeles’ starting lineup has been dominant on one end of the floor and putrid on the other. The Lakers’ starters rank sixth in the NBA in offensive rating, while all but entirely offsetting that production by ranking 27th in defensive rating.

Hachimura isn’t the primary source of the Lakers’ flaws, but the team simply needs something that he isn’t necessarily equipped to offer them.

With LeBron James and Austin Reaves on the court, Los Angeles must accept a measure of defensive inconsistency. Both are high-level offensive players, with James earning All-Star honors and Reaves beginning to throw his name into the ring.

Unfortunately, they’re also inconsistent on defense—meaning the Lakers need to surround them with high-level defenders in order to mask their flaws and perform at a sustainable level as a team.

Hachimura is a solid defensive player who has made progress in every phase of the game in 2024-25. Finney-Smith, however, has made a living as one of the best 3-and-D players in the NBA, possessing the defensive instincts and track record to justify that distinction.

It’s obviously only been one game, but the Lakers’ starters produced a net rating of plus-11.8 against the Warriors, improving upon their defensive rating by 3.1 points per 100 possessions.

It’s also worth noting that the Lakers rank in the 93rd percentile in net rating when Finney-Smith shares the court with Anthony Davis. It’s still a limited sample size, but it speaks to the difference between Davis playing with a quality defender and a player who has proven to be of a borderline elite caliber.

It’s unfortunate that Hachimura is in this situation, but the Lakers should make the change to Finney-Smith starting full-time while the opportunity naturally exists.

The Los Angeles Lakers have faced a setback with the unfortunate injury to one of their key players, but every challenge presents an opportunity. With the injury forcing a change in the starting lineup, the Lakers now have a chance to transition to a new lineup that could potentially improve their performance on the court.

Injuries are never easy to deal with, especially when they happen to a player as impactful as the one the Lakers are currently facing. However, this setback could be a blessing in disguise for the team, as it gives them the chance to experiment with different lineup combinations and find a new starting five that could bring a fresh dynamic to their game.

The coaching staff will need to carefully consider their options and make strategic decisions about who to insert into the starting lineup in place of the injured player. This could be an opportunity to give younger or less experienced players a chance to step up and prove themselves, or to shake up the rotation and try out a lineup that has not been tested before.

While injuries are never ideal, they are a part of the game and teams must adapt and adjust accordingly. The Lakers have a talented roster and the depth to weather this storm, and this could be the moment where they discover a new lineup that takes their game to the next level.

As the team navigates through this challenging time, it will be interesting to see how they rise to the occasion and make the most of this opportunity to transition to a new starting lineup. With the right adjustments and a positive mindset, the Lakers could come out of this setback even stronger than before.

Record-breaking Gael Monfils retired from his Australian Open fourth round match against young American Ben Shelton, as the 38-year-old’s epic run in Melbourne came to an unfortunate end.

An ailing Monfils received a standing ovation as he left the court after trailing 7-6 6-7 7-6 1-0 early in the fourth set. The Frenchman, who last week became the oldest player to win an ATP tour title, had nothing left to give and struggled with a back injury after being dragged into a three-hour battle by the big-serving Shelton.

Monfils had rolled back the years at the Australian Open with his victories over fourth seed Taylor Fritz, Daniel Altmaier and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to become the oldest man to reach the fourth round in Melbourne since Roger Federer. He had also won eight matches in a row, following his surprise title in Auckland at the start of the year.

Monfils had pushed his body to its limits since requiring five sets to beat Mpetshi Perricard in the opening round, and he admitted he was feeling sore before the match against Shelton began.

“Unfortunately, I couldn’t finish the match, but I’m happy with all I gave today,” Monfils said afterwards.

“You know, at the end of the day, it’s been a very long tour for me, playing a lot of matches, spending a lot of hours,” Monfils said. “Of course, some days are tougher. Today was one where I think I was already very close from the limit, and I think I passed it, unfortunately.

“You know, it happens, but I’m still learning, which is good. Learning also take more experience. Of course, today was tougher for me physically.”

Monfils and Shelton smiled as they shook hands at the net and the 22-year-old was complimentary of the veteran’s efforts in the match.

“Gael is a great guy, I’ve watched him since I was a kid,” Shelton said. “I’ve always said he has the best highlights-reel of all time and we saw some of that tonight. At 38, I would hope to just be able to still be walking without crutches.

“To push me like he did today, and to entertain in New Zealand and Australia the way he has over the last two weeks is so impressive and I hope to be able to create some memories like that at that age. It’s really special and unheard of in sport.

Shelton was full of respect for Monfils after his run to the fourth round

“For me, he’s played a lot of long matches and I wanted to make it as physical as possible. He does a lot things on the court unbelievably well, a lot of counter-punching, making you feel uncomfortable at the net. Being able to find that balance, it was incredible difficult today because he was serving so well.

“There are a lot of things that make him a nightmare to play. I can’t imagine playing him when he was 21, 22 like me.”

Monfils will still have interest in the Australian Open, however, as his partner Elina Svitolina booked her place in the quarter-finals on her return from injury.

Svitolina was happy to bring some light to Ukraine with her victory over Russian Veronika Kudermetova in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Svitolina, who has refused to shake hands with Russian or Belarusian opponents after matches since the start of the war nearly three years ago, recovered from a poor start to win 6-4 6-1 and reach her 12th grand slam quarter-final.

“This fighting spirit that I have is completely Ukrainian spirit that I try to show, that I try to represent, as well,” she said.

The 30-year-old, who is playing in her first tournament since foot surgery last September, has won all eight matches she has played against Russian opponents since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

In the last eight, Svitolina will take on in-form American Madison Keys, who upset sixth seed Elena Rybakina 6-3 1-6 6-3.

After an incredible and record-breaking run at the Australian Open, Gael Monfils has announced his retirement from professional tennis. The French tennis star captured the hearts of fans around the world with his electrifying performances on the court, but unfortunately, injuries have forced him to hang up his racket.

Monfils’ journey at this year’s Australian Open was nothing short of remarkable. He fought through grueling matches and displayed his trademark athleticism and flair, eventually reaching the semifinals before being forced to withdraw due to a nagging injury.

Throughout his career, Monfils has been known for his entertaining playing style and infectious personality. He leaves behind a legacy of highlight-reel moments and unforgettable matches that will be remembered by tennis fans for years to come.

While it is heartbreaking to see such a talented player cut his career short, we can only thank Gael Monfils for the memories and wish him all the best in his future endeavors. Tennis will surely miss his presence on the court, but his impact on the sport will never be forgotten. Farewell, Gael Monfils.

  • Ravens’ Todd Monken: Timing of interviews ‘unfortunate’

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — In what has been a very important and busy week for Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, he described the timing of the NFL head coach interview process as less than optimal.

Monken, who led the Ravens’ offense to its first No. 1 ranking this season, has two interviews for head coach vacancies just days before Baltimore’s AFC divisional playoff game in Buffalo on Sunday. Monken interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday and will speak with the Chicago Bears on Friday, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“The way the system is set up is unfortunate, but it is what it is,” Monken said Thursday. “But I’m excited to play the Bills — that’s where my mind’s at.”

This time of year can be challenging one for coaches who are trying to balance getting a head coaching job with helping their current team win a championship.

Under NFL rules, coaches who are with playoff teams can interview for head coach openings days after the wild-card game and must occur before the end of the divisional round games. These interviews are conducted virtually.

Monken, 58, didn’t have an answer on how to change the process.

“I don’t think there’s any easy way, or they’d already be doing it,” Monken said. “It is what it is. It’s like trying to figure out things. … They’ve been trying to figure it out. There’s no easy way. There’s no easy solution, so it is what it is.”

Monken said the interviews did not affect his preparation time in game-planning for the Bills. He pointed out that the work he needed to do for any head coach interviews was done in the offseason.

“So, all of my focus last week was on the Steelers, and all of my focus this week is on the Bills,” Monken said. “I love the job I have — I really do, and I have a great job here.”

In Monken’s second season in Baltimore, the Ravens led the NFL by averaging 424.9 yards per game. Baltimore became the first team in NFL history to record over 4,000 yards passing and 3,000 yards rushing in a single season.

Monken also helped quarterback Lamar Jackson to the best statistical season of his seven-year career. The two-time NFL Most Valuable Player posted career highs with 4,172 yards passing and 41 touchdown passes while throwing four interceptions.

Last year, Monken interviewed for head coaching jobs with the Los Angeles Chargers and Carolina Panthers.

“It’s a compliment to this organization — our players and our coaches — that other organizations have an interest in myself or any of our coaches,” Monken said. “That’s just a fact.”

The Baltimore Ravens’ offensive coordinator, Todd Monken, recently spoke out about the timing of his interviews for head coaching positions in the NFL. Monken expressed that he found the timing of the interviews to be “unfortunate” as they came during the team’s playoff run.

Despite the distractions of the interviews, Monken emphasized that his focus remained on helping the Ravens succeed in the postseason. He credited the organization and his fellow coaches for their support during this challenging time.

While Monken’s interviews may have been a distraction, his dedication to the team and his professionalism throughout the process have not gone unnoticed. Ravens fans can rest assured that Monken’s commitment to the team remains unwavering as they continue their playoff journey.

  • Todd Monken: It’s “unfortunate” the NFL hiring cycle has coaches interview during playoffs

Todd Monken is the Ravens’ offensive coordinator, preparing to face the Bills in the divisional playoffs on Sunday. He’s also a head-coaching candidate, interviewing with multiple teams this week. He acknowledges that’s not ideal.

Monken told reporters he wishes there were some different setup for the timing of coaching interviews so there would be no conflicts, but he said his primary focus this week is on Sunday’s game.

“The way the system is set up is unfortunate, but it is what it is,” Monken said. “I’m excited to play the Bills. That’s where my mind’s at.”

So what should the system be? Monken said he doesn’t think there’s necessarily a better option.

“I don’t think there’s an easy way, or they’d already be doing it,” Monken said. “It is what it is. It’s like trying to figure out things that they’ve been trying to figure it out. There’s no easy way. There’s no easy solution.”

Monken said that he spent time last offseason preparing for the possibility that he would get head-coaching interviews and that he has referred back to that work this week, rather than starting over on what his pitch would be to NFL teams.

“Any of the work I needed to do for any interviews I did during the offseason,” Monken said.

As long as the system is what it is, coaches in Monken’s position will have some conflicts during the playoffs. And Monken is right that it is unfortunate.

In a recent interview, Todd Monken, offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, expressed his frustration with the NFL’s hiring process for head coaches. Monken stated that it is “unfortunate” that coaches are required to interview for head coaching positions during the playoffs, as it can be a distraction and take away from the focus on the team and their postseason run.

Many fans and analysts have echoed Monken’s sentiments, arguing that the timing of these interviews puts unnecessary pressure on coaches and can disrupt the team’s preparation and performance. Some have even called for changes to be made to the hiring process to avoid this conflict in the future.

As the NFL continues to evolve and grow, it will be interesting to see if any changes are made to address this issue and ensure that coaches are given the opportunity to interview for new opportunities without compromising their current team’s success. In the meantime, Monken and other coaches will have to navigate the challenges of the hiring cycle while remaining focused on their playoff aspirations.

10 Fortunate & Unfortunate ‘Wheel of Fortune’ Moments of 2024

It’s been a pivotal year for Wheel of Fortune. Here in Season 42, the game show has a new host and a new set, both of which took some getting used to. But some things never change: Vanna White is still flipping letters on the answer board, contestants are still winning big prizes, and major mistakes are still costing players lots of money.

Here are 10 highs and lows from Wheel of Fortune in the 2024 calendar year, covering the back half of Pat Sajak’s final season and the front half of Ryan Seacrest’s first.

Unfortunate: Viewers muse about a Ryan Seacrest “curse”

Ryan Seacrest’s first episodes at the podium coincided with a streak of bankrupt spins, leading viewers and even the host himself to wonder whether there was a Ryan Seacrest curse at work. “Should we have a conversation with this wheel?” Seacrest joked in one episode. “What are you doing to us?”

Toss-Up: Seacrest break-dances on the show

When contestant Kamilah showed ff her rapping skills during Wheel’s December 10 episode, Seacrest showed off his breakdancing skills, doing a backspin on the game show’s stage. Some viewers loved the impromptu dance break — “Ryan gives a fun vibe,” one Instagram commenter said — and some certainly did not — “Pat would never have been caught dead doing that.”

BGT Aus vs India MCG Test – Shubman Gill not dropped ‘just unfortunate’ says Abhishek Nayar

Gill missed the first Test in Perth with a finger injury. He came back for the next one – the day-night Test – in Adelaide, and though he looked solid in both innings he scored only 31 and 28. He fell for 1 chasing a wide half-volley in his only innings in the Brisbane Test.

India decided to go into the MCG Test with their captain Rohit Sharma back as opener. KL Rahul has been their best batter on tour. The skill he has shown in negotiating the new ball meant he had to bat up the order. He’s slated to come in at No. 3. India could have moved Gill down to No. 6 but they decided to pack their XI with allrounders instead.

“Well I think a lot of the decisions when they are made, and the process of it being made, the communication is always there, transparency is there,” India’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar said after the first day’s play in Melbourne. “Rohit will come up in the order and more likely than not he will open the innings for us. So I think that was the thought process and unfortunately for him [Gill], just how things panned out. He had to miss out and sometimes I just feel for a young player in a position like that, a big day, he wants to make his mark, he understands it is a team’s requirement and it is unfortunate. I wouldn’t say that he has been dropped per se, it is just unfortunate that he couldn’t find his place in his team.”

Nayar seemed to suggest the choice was between Gill, their second-highest scorer in the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle, and Washington Sundar, and they preferred having an offspinner bowing at Travis Head and Alex Carey when the ball gets older. There seemed to be no question over Nitish Kumar Reddy’s spot – he only bowled five overs on day one and is set to bat at No. 7.

India’s desire for bowlers who can bat could also be because two of their most reliable sources for runs have run dry in this series: Rohit (19 runs at 6.33) and Virat Kohli (126 runs at 31.50) are still searching for their best form.

“I always believe that it’s about confidence and a start. Once a player gets a start, their game looks different. So, I think Virat and Rohit are both such players. If they can play 25-30 balls, then you will see the same Virat and Rohit that you see earlier. But, this is a game of confidence. So, no matter how much you practise, no matter how much you talk, in the end, when you get into the match, it’s very important to play 20-25-30 balls.”

Things looked precarious for India when 19-year old Australian debutant Sam Konstas took down all of their bowlers and set his team up for a big total. Jasprit Bumrah helped them fight back after tea to end the day with Australia on 311 for 6.

“Well, I think a lot of credit to, you know, the way Sam played. I felt, you know, the intent that he showed in the first four sort of put us in the back foot. I felt it took a lot of character for our bowlers to stick in there,” Nayar said. “It wasn’t the best, I mean, the easiest conditions to bowl, we felt the conditions are good to bat on and at times like that, sometimes it’s important to stick to your guns, stick to the plans.

“I felt post-lunch, we came back really strong, bowling [four] maidens [back-to-back], you know, putting the pressure on the opposition. I felt at times like that, you are taken by surprise when someone plays a knock like that, but I felt we responded really well and then through the day, sort of kept at it and towards the end, you reap the rewards of everything that you did through the day. So, I felt overall, you look at that day, we were happy with where we ended.”

The recent decision to not drop Shubman Gill from the playing XI for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test match against Australia at the MCG has sparked a lot of debate among cricket fans. However, former Indian cricketer Abhishek Nayar has come out in support of the young batsman, stating that his exclusion from the team was “just unfortunate”.

Nayar, who has worked closely with Gill in the past, believes that the talented opener has the potential to be a key player for India in the upcoming series. Despite his recent struggles with the bat, Nayar is confident that Gill will bounce back and make a valuable contribution to the team.

While some may argue that dropping Gill would have been a bold move by the Indian team management, Nayar’s comments suggest that they have faith in the young batsman’s abilities. It remains to be seen how Gill will perform in the upcoming Test match, but one thing is for certain – he has the backing of his former mentor and teammates.

As the anticipation builds for the highly-anticipated series between India and Australia, all eyes will be on Shubman Gill to see if he can live up to the expectations and make a mark on the historic MCG Test. Only time will tell if Nayar’s faith in the young cricketer is well-placed, but one thing is clear – Gill will have the full support of his fans and teammates as he takes to the field in this crucial match.
