McCausland To Start? | Predicted 4-2-3-1 Rangers Lineup To Face Dundee United

McCausland To Start? | Predicted 4-2-3-1 Rangers Lineup To Face Dundee United

Despite punching above the weight at Old Trafford, injury-ravaged Rangers suffered a stoppage-time heartbreak against Manchester United. While they are likely to secure a knockout phase playoff spot irrespective of their final group phase encounter with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, the Light Blues must regroup themselves for a tricky trip to Tannadice Park to clash heads with Dundee United.

The Tangerines, currently third in the Premiership standings, are enjoying a scintillating league run. They held Celtic to a stalemate in December and could now upset the Gers on Sunday lunchtime given the latter’s dreadful away form. The Gers only avoided a home defeat when Vaclav Cerny found an equalizer midway through the second half, but a narrow 1-0 win at Tannadice early into the season must boost their confidence irrespective of form and fitness concerns.

Predicted 4-2-3-1 Rangers Lineup To Face Dundee United

    Defence

Back between the sticks, Jack Butland conceded an owl goal against the Red Devils. However, he is expected to retain his ‘number 1’ status even though Liam Kelly had a good run of games during the Englishman’s injury absence.

Leon Balogun, although returned for a few days, is injured again. But the rise of Clinton Nsiala has relieved Philippe Clement who would rely on the young Frenchman to partner with Robin Propper in the heart of the backline. Skipper James Tavernier should continue as the right fullback, and the Belgian boss might opt for a rotation on the left by deploying Ridvan Yilmaz over Jefte. Neraysho Kasanwirjo, Dujon Sterling and John Souttar have yet to recover from their injuries, but we could see the January signing Rafael Fernandes make the matchday squad.

    Midfield

Mohamed Diomande was suspended in Europe but should return to the starting XI for the Tangerines tie. Nicolas Raskin must keep his place thus forming a double pivot’ alongside the Ivorian. Connor Barron might undergo a spell on the sidelines after damaging his knee against Man United.

Vaclav Cerny, too, sustained an injury on Thursday night. He now joins Oscar Cortes and Danilo on the treatment table. Rabbi Matondo, who is no longer in the manager’s plans, is tipped to part ways in the coming days. The limitations in and around the attacking third could see Ross McCausland secure a spot down the right-hand flank. Ianis Hagi might feature from the left and the ‘number 10’ role belongs to Nedim Bajrami for the time being until Lawrence is fit enough to start games.

    Attack

Despite falling down the pecking order behind Hamza Igamane, Cyriel Dessers has scored in their past three fixtures across competitions. The Nigerian could again be involved as a ‘super sub’ considering the Moroccan’s rise as an outright ‘number 9’.

With Ryan Jack out injured, there is speculation that Scott McCausland could be in line to start for Rangers in their upcoming match against Dundee United. Here is a predicted 4-2-3-1 lineup for Rangers:

    Goalkeeper: Allan McGregor

Defenders: James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Borna Barisic

Midfielders: Glen Kamara, Steven Davis, Scott McCausland, Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent

    Forward: Alfredo Morelos

McCausland has been impressive in training and could potentially slot into the midfield alongside Kamara and Davis. This lineup provides a strong balance of attacking and defensive options, with Kent and Aribo providing creativity up front alongside Morelos.

Will McCausland get the nod from Steven Gerrard? Only time will tell, but the versatile midfielder could be in line for his first start of the season against Dundee United. Stay tuned for updates on the confirmed lineup.

  • Preview: Dundee United vs. Rangers – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday’s Scottish Premiership clash between Dundee United and Rangers, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two teams battling at the top of the Scottish Premiership table will come together on Sunday afternoon when Dundee United host Rangers at Tannadice Park.

The hosts are third in the standings with 37 points from 23 outings, while the visitors reside in second place with 47 points from their 23 league fixtures.

    Match preview

Jim Goodwin (Manager) of Dundee United during the 2024/25 Pre Season Friendly match between Dundee United and Luton Town at CalForth Construction Arena, Tannadice Park, Scotland on 26 July 2024 [on August 2, 2024]© Imago

Dundee United suffered a surprise relegation from the Scottish Premiership in 2022-23, falling from a fourth-placed finish in 2021-22 to placing 12th in the following year.

However, Jim Goodwin, who took charge in March 2023, instantly guided the side back to the top flight as the Tangerines lifted the Scottish Championship title last year, finishing six points clear of second-placed Raith Rovers.

Their impressive form under Goodwin has continued into this campaign, with Dundee Utd currently placed third in the top division with 37 points from 23 matches, after 10 wins, seven draws and six defeats.

Dundee Utd enjoyed a particularly impressive first half of the season, losing just six of their opening 26 fixtures across all competitions, but recent results have marked a noticeable downturn in form.

The Tangerines are heading into this one having lost three of their last four games, scoring just once in that time, including a disappointing 1-0 defeat to rivals Dundee in their Scottish Cup fourth round tie.

Aiming to get back to their form from earlier in the season, Dundee Utd are set to take on the tough challenge of second-placed Rangers, who the Tangerines have failed to beat since August 2021.

Rangers’ season has unfolded in contrast to Dundee Utd’s, beginning with their worst start to a Scottish Premiership campaign after 12 matches since returning to the top division in 2016-17, but showing significant improvement in their subsequent fixtures.

Philippe Clement‘s men managed only 7 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses in the first 12 games, leaving them already 11 points behind Celtic, but the Gers have improved with seven wins, three draws and one loss in the following 11 outings.

Although the title is likely out of reach, with the Bhoys holding a 13-point lead at the top of the standings, the Gers will aim to keep securing victories in hopes of a potential Celtic collapse in the remainder of the campaign.

The Gers will be confident of securing all three points heading into this one, given their record of six wins and two draws in the last eight encounters with Dundee Utd, while Clement’s team are also undefeated in their past seven domestic fixtures.

    Team News

Rangers manager Philippe Clement on December 12, 2024© Imago

Dundee United have avoided any fresh injury concerns in recent matches, meaning only Craig Sibbald (groin) and David Babunski are expected to miss out due to injury issues.

Top scorer Sam Dalby, with 10 league goals in 20 appearances, has seen his scoring touch run dry in recent weeks, going four games without a goal, leaving him eager to end his drought with a goal here to avoid matching his season’s longest run of five matches without scoring.

While the goals have dried up for Dalby, Louis Moult has hit form with two goals in his last three appearances, and the two could form a strike partnership in this one.

For Rangers, Dujon Sterling (foot), John Souttar and Neraysho Kasanwirjo (knee) are likely to remain sidelined, while injuries sustained during their recent defeat to Manchester United leave Leon Balogun, Connor Barron and Vaclav Cerny as doubts.

Mohammed Diomande is likely to return to alleviate their midfield woes after missing the defeat to Man Utd due to suspension, with Nicolas Raskin and Nedim Bajrami expected to retain their places in the side.

    Dundee United possible starting lineup:
Walton; Adegboyega, Gallagher, Holt; Strain, Docherty, Sevelj, Ferry; Stephenson; Moult, Dalby

    Rangers possible starting lineup:
Butland; Tavernier, Propper, Nsiala, Jefte; Raskin, Diomande; Hagi, Bajrami, Yilmaz; Igamane

    SM words green background

We say: Dundee United 1-2 Rangers

Dundee Utd’s spirits may be low due to their recent form, while Rangers will be confident following their strong run in domestic competitions and their unbeaten record in the last eight meetings with the Tangerines, leading us to expect a victory for the visitors.

Manchester United and Liverpool are set to face off in a highly anticipated Premier League clash this weekend, but both teams are dealing with injury concerns heading into the match.

Manchester United will be without several key players, including Marcus Rashford and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who are both sidelined with injuries. However, Bruno Fernandes is expected to lead the attack, while Edinson Cavani could also feature in the starting lineup.

Liverpool, on the other hand, will be without Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, who are both long-term absentees. However, Jurgen Klopp could welcome back Diogo Jota and Naby Keita, who are both nearing a return to full fitness.

    Predicted lineups:

Manchester United: De Gea; Telles, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw; McTominay, Fred; Greenwood, Fernandes, Pogba; Cavani.

Liverpool: Alisson; Robertson, Matip, Phillips, Alexander-Arnold; Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago; Mane, Salah, Jota.

It promises to be an exciting match between two of the biggest clubs in English football, and both teams will be looking to secure a crucial victory in the race for the Premier League title.

  • Southampton vs. Newcastle United: Preview, Lineups and Predictions

Newcastle United travel to face Southampton in the Premier League with the visitors looking to break into the top four.

Eddie Howe’s side comes in after a demoralizing loss to Bournemouth while Southampton are last in the league accumulating just six points through 22 games. Newcastle United were rolling before their last loss winning six in a row. Southampton need to start stringing wins together before relegation isn’t just likely, but inevitable. Though, the Saints face another tough opponent after losing last time to Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle United are a real contender to finish in a European place this season, let alone the Champions League. The side has conceded just 26 goals so far this campaign behind Liverpool, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest for the best defensive record. Those three teams just happen to be top three in the table right now as well. One of Chelsea or Manchester City will drop points this week, or perhaps both if the game ends level, so the Magpies could end up leapfrogging one of those two teams by the end of the week.

Get ready for the Premier League match with expected lineups, how to watch information and predictions below.

The match was not selected by broadcasters Sky Sports or TNT Sports. The game has been subjected, as such, to the blackout rule.

Newcastle United are the heavy favorites coming into the tie and they should dominate the game even as the visitors. Alexander Isak, amid interest from other clubs, continues to prove why he’s so valuable to the club up top scoring 15 goals so far this season. He’s only behind Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland in the golden boot race as well.

Newcastle United complete a league double over Southampton and take out their frustration from their loss to Bournemouth.

    Prediction: Newcastle United 3-0 Southampton

Southampton vs. Newcastle United: Preview, Lineups and Predictions

Southampton will face off against Newcastle United in an exciting Premier League clash on Saturday. Both teams will be looking to secure three points as they aim to climb up the league table.

Southampton have had a mixed start to the season, with two wins, two draws, and one loss in their opening five games. They will be looking to build on their recent victory against Burnley and continue their positive momentum.

Newcastle United, on the other hand, have struggled so far this season, with just one win and four losses in their first five games. They will be desperate to turn their form around and secure a much-needed win against Southampton.

    Predicted lineups:

Southampton: McCarthy, Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Vestergaard, Perraud, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Armstrong, Walcott, Adams, Armstrong

Newcastle United: Dubravka, Murphy, Lascelles, Schar, Lewis, Almiron, Longstaff, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin, Wilson, Joelinton

    Prediction:

Southampton are in better form than Newcastle United at the moment and have the home advantage, which could give them the edge in this match. I predict a 2-1 victory for Southampton, with goals from Armstrong and Adams for the home side, and Wilson scoring for Newcastle United.

  • Southampton have won just one of their last 13 Premier League games against Newcastle (D3 L9), losing each of the last four in a row.

  • Having won just one of their first 18 Premier League away games against Southampton (D5 L12), Newcastle have now won three of their last four visits to St Mary’s (L1).

  • Newcastle have lost just one of their last 23 Premier League games against promoted sides (W14 D8), going down 1-0 at Luton in December 2023. Since that defeat at Kenilworth Road, the Magpies have scored at least four goals in five of their six games against promoted clubs, winning the last five in a row.

  • Southampton have won just one of their last 35 Premier League games (D7 L27). When converting to three points for a win all time, Saints’ six points is the joint-second lowest after 22 top-flight games (level with Sheffield United in 1975-76), with only Bolton in 1902-03 ever having fewer at this stage (3).

  • Newcastle have won each of their last three Premier League away games, last winning four in a row on the road in September/October 1996.

  • Southampton players have made 17 errors leading to a goal in the Premier League this season – only Tottenham Hotspur (21 in 2013-14) have made more in a single campaign on record (since 2007-08).

  • Southampton have lost each of their last five Premier League home games, failing to score in any of the last three. In their league history, they’ve never lost six in a row at home, nor have they ever lost four in a row without scoring.

  • Including own goals, each of Southampton’s last eight Premier League goals have been netted by different players. No Southampton player has scored more than twice this term, with this the latest into a season (22 games) a side hasn’t had a single player score at least three goals.

  • Bruno Guimarães has won 76 fouls in the Premier League this season, the most of any player. His rate of 3.6 fouls won per 90 is the most by a Newcastle player in a single campaign since Jonás Gutiérrez in 2008-09 (3.8 – minimum 500 minutes).

  • Alexander Isak has scored in each of his last four Premier League away games, with no Newcastle player ever doing so in five in a row. Furthermore, he’s scored 13 goals in just 12 Premier League appearances against promoted sides, netting a hat-trick against Ipswich Town last time out.

Southampton will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing defeat to Manchester United when they face off against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Friday night.

The Saints suffered a 9-0 thrashing at the hands of the Red Devils in their last outing and will be desperate to put that result behind them with a strong performance against the Magpies.

Newcastle, on the other hand, are coming off a 3-2 win over Leeds United and will be full of confidence heading into this clash.

Team news:

Southampton will be without the services of midfielder Oriol Romeu, who is sidelined with a fractured ankle. However, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will have the likes of Danny Ings and Che Adams available for selection.

Newcastle will be without the injured Callum Wilson and Fabian Schar, while Allan Saint-Maximin is a doubt for the game.

Stats:

– Southampton have won just one of their last five Premier League games.
– Newcastle have won three of their last five league matches.
– The last meeting between these two sides ended in a 2-0 win for Southampton.

Head-to-head:

In their last 10 meetings, Southampton have won four games, Newcastle have won three, and three matches have ended in draws.

Both teams will be looking to secure all three points in this crucial fixture, as they aim to climb up the Premier League table. It promises to be an exciting clash between two evenly matched sides.

  • Sheffield United vs Hull City LIVE: Championship result, final score and reaction

    (Getty Images)

Follow live coverage as Sheffield United face Hull City in the Championship today.

An increasingly competitive second tier in English football remains an intense and exciting competition, with the prize of a place in the Premier League on offer at the end of the season.

Relegation from the top flight last term means Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United are all back in the second tier this term and will be expected to push for play-off spots again at least, but so too will Norwich City, an improving Coventry and beaten play-off finalists Leeds United. At the other end of the table, Wayne Rooney is aiming to revive Plymouth’s fortunes after they narrowly avoided relegation last year, with Portsmouth and Derby the teams promoted from League One along with play-off final winners Oxford.
