  • German opposition leader Merz urges united EU stance on Trump | News

Friedrich Merz, the leader of the German opposition party, has called for a united stance from the European Union in dealing with US President Donald Trump. Merz, who is known for his conservative views, believes that a strong and unified EU response is necessary to counteract Trump’s unpredictable and often controversial policies.

In a recent speech, Merz criticized Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on European goods and withdraw from international agreements, such as the Paris climate accord and the Iran nuclear deal. He argued that these actions have undermined the EU’s efforts to promote peace, stability, and cooperation on the global stage.

Merz’s call for a united EU stance on Trump comes at a time of increasing tensions between the US and Europe, particularly on issues such as trade, defense spending, and climate change. He believes that by presenting a united front, the EU can better protect its interests and values in the face of Trump’s disruptive policies.

As Germany prepares for its upcoming federal elections, Merz’s stance on Trump is likely to be a key issue in the campaign. While some may criticize his approach as too confrontational, others see it as a necessary response to the challenges posed by the current US administration.

Overall, Merz’s call for a united EU stance on Trump highlights the growing importance of European unity in the face of external threats and challenges. Only time will tell if the EU will heed his advice and present a united front in dealing with the unpredictable actions of the Trump administration.

  • German opposition leader Merz urges united EU stance on Trump | Billings News

Germany’s conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz, frontrunner in polls to become the next chancellor, on Tuesday urged a united European stance in talks with US President Donald Trump.

Merz also said that, should he win the snap general election on February 23, he would seek strong ties with Germany’s traditional core EU partner France but also with Poland and Italy, led by far-right premier Giorgia Meloni.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos a day after Trump’s inauguration, Merz recalled congratulating him in a handwritten letter and said “we should be ready to meet as soon as possible”.

But he cautioned that “I would not like to see any European leader go to (Washington) DC without having before tried to coordinate what we are telling them from our European perspective”.

With questions on trade, security and other issues looming, he cautioned against EU member countries “popping up there and speaking different languages, everybody only speaking on his own behalf”.

Instead, Merz argued the need “to negotiate with the American side from a position of strength”.

“Let’s work with him and let’s figure out where we are having approaches in common,” he said, mentioning relations with China as an example.

    – ‘Position of strength’ –

Merz is enjoying a strong poll lead over centre-left Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who addressed the Davos forum earlier — although, if he wins, Merz may yet need Scholz’s SPD as a coalition ally.

The conservative CDU leader, a strong supporter of the EU and transatlantic ties, has accused Scholz of neglecting international relations.

Merz also said Germany needed to get Poland “at the table as fast as possible” and praised Meloni of the post-fascist Brothers of Italy party, who has positioned herself as the closest mainstream European leader to Trump.

“I don’t understand the reservations towards her,” Merz said. “I think she is very pro-European, she is very clear in her position towards Ukraine and Russia.”

“Why don’t we talk with her more often than we did in the past?” he added.

Outlining other policy positions, Merz said he would seek to rebuild the German economy by helping companies, lowering energy prices, studying a return to nuclear power, and getting the unemployed off welfare benefits and back into the labour market.

A top priority would be reducing the “big problem” of irregular immigration, he said, adding that this would also help tackle the “challenges coming from the right-wing populists” of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), with whom he vowed to never cooperate.

On the Ukraine war, he pledged strong continued support for Kyiv, stressing that the war “will not come to an end from a position of weakness. It will only come to an end from a position of strength.”

In a recent statement, German opposition leader Friedrich Merz called for a united stance from the European Union in response to President Donald Trump’s policies and actions. Merz emphasized the importance of solidarity among EU member states in dealing with the challenges posed by the Trump administration.

Merz criticized Trump’s “America First” approach and expressed concern over the impact it could have on transatlantic relations. He urged EU leaders to work together to assert their own interests and values in the face of increasing uncertainty and unpredictability from the United States.

The opposition leader’s remarks come at a time of growing tension between the EU and the Trump administration, particularly on issues such as trade, climate change, and security. Merz’s call for a united EU stance reflects a broader push for European countries to assert their sovereignty and independence in the face of external pressures.

As the EU grapples with the challenges of a changing global landscape, Merz’s message serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and solidarity in defending the interests of European citizens. It remains to be seen how EU leaders will respond to Trump’s policies and whether they will heed Merz’s call for a united front.

  • Newcastle United dispatch scouts to watch ‘superstar’ as Eddie Howe steals a march

Newcastle United are looking to sign an attacker with a real eye for goal.

The Magpies have been fortunate enough to have Alexander Isak at their disposal this season. The Swede is the Premier League’s third-highest scorer with 15, only Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah have more.

Isak has been hailed as the Premier League’s best centre-forward by many. Ally McCoist recently said Isak was the best “by a country mile.

Despite Isak’s fine form, they struggle to find where the goals come from if he is not available. Anthony Gordon is having a fine season thanks to his 10-goal contributions in the league. However, there are just five other players who have scored for Newcastle this season, the lowest in the Premier League.

William Osula showed signs that he has a chance to replace Isak in the future thanks to his wonderful goal in Newcastle’s win against Bromley. Elsewhere, Callum Wilson is out injured and is out of contract in the summer, so there is a need to buy.

With Newcastle eyeing a quality striker, there is one name who keeps cropping up. Now, a recent report has stated that the Magpies sent an executive to watch him recently.

Newcastle send scout to watch Jonathan David

LOSC Lille forward Jonathan David has been in exceptional form for the French side this season. He is joint-top scorer in Ligue 1 with 11 goals to his name.

David; who has been hailed as a “superstar”, has also had a fantastic run in the Champions League, scoring six goals in 10 games across the qualifiers and the league phase.

Newcastle want to sign David who is out of contract in the summer. Early signs suggest the 25-year-old does not want to stay at Lille and will look for a move away upon the expiry of his contract.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle were represented by a high-level club employee at Lille’s game against Nice on Friday.

Nikos Mavromaras; David’s agent, has stated that his client is open to options around Europe.

The report states that qualifying for the Champions League would give Newcastle a massive boost in the race to sign David.

The Canadian is not short of interest from elsewhere, however. It was recently reported that West Ham boss Graham Potter hoped to beat Newcastle to David and make him his first signing at the Hammers.

The scouting mission is a sign that Eddie Howe is keen to gain the advantage in the race to sign the forward who also has interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.

Newcastle must splash the cash for David

Although David will be available on a free, he is still expected to come with a hefty wage bill. The same Chronicle report states that David is demanding around £120,000 per week from interested parties.

That wage would make him one of the highest earners at the club, but not the highest. That title currently belongs to Bruno Guimaraes who earns around £160,000 per week.

    Appearances Goals Assists
    Jonathan David 30 17 7

A bonus for Newcastle is that David can also play as a winger. The Magpies are keen to sign a winger with Miguel Almiron’s Newcastle departure imminent.

It allows Newcastle to form a formidable front line of Gordon, Isak and David. An attacking line-up most Premier League clubs would surely be fearful of.

Newcastle United dispatch scouts to watch ‘superstar’ as Eddie Howe steals a march

Newcastle United’s new manager Eddie Howe is wasting no time in identifying potential targets for the January transfer window, as reports emerge that the club has dispatched scouts to watch a ‘superstar’ player in action.

The Magpies are keen to bolster their squad in order to climb out of the relegation zone and secure their Premier League status for next season. With Howe at the helm, Newcastle are hoping to attract top talent to St James’ Park.

The player in question has not been named, but sources suggest that he is a highly-rated individual who could make a significant impact in the Premier League. Newcastle’s scouts will be keeping a close eye on his performances in the coming weeks.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting any updates on potential signings, as Newcastle look to turn their season around under the guidance of their new manager. With Howe’s track record of developing young talent and playing attractive football, the future looks bright for the Magpies.

CHICAGO (Reuters) – United Airlines on Tuesday forecast a stronger-than-expected profit in the current quarter, after its earnings topped Wall Street estimates in the fourth quarter on robust travel demand and improved pricing power.

The Chicago-based airline’s shares were up about 5% in after-hours trading.

United expects an adjusted profit in the range of 75 cents a share to $1.25 per share in the quarter through March. Analysts expect the company to report a quarterly profit of 54 cents a share, according to LSEG data.

For the full-year 2025, United forecast an adjusted profit of $11.50 to $13.50 per share. That compares with $12.85 per share expected by Wall Street analysts.

Its adjusted earnings in the December quarter came in at $3.26 a share, compared with analysts’ expectations of $3.00.

United Airlines forecast first-quarter earnings that surpassed analysts’ estimates as the carrier seeks to grow earnings again in 2025 thanks to strong travel demand.

The airline said Tuesday that it expects to earn an adjusted 75 cents to $1.25 in the first three months of the year, above the 54 cents analysts had expected, according to LSEG estimates.

United’s stock is up more than 180% over the past 12 months as of Tuesday’s close, more than any other U.S. carrier. United shares were up more than 3% in extended trading after it released results.

Here is what United reported for the fourth quarter compared with what Wall Street expected, based on estimates compiled by LSEG:

    • Earnings per share: $3.26 adjusted vs. $3.00 expected
    • Revenue: $14.70 billion vs. $14.47 billion expected

For full-year 2025, United expects to grow adjusted earnings to $11.50 to $13.50, in line with expectations of about $12.82, according to LSEG.

United and rival Delta have benefitted from strong demand for pricier seats like in business class, international travel and their massive loyalty programs. Delta’s CEO Ed Bastian earlier this month said he expects 2025 to be the carrier’s “best financial year in our history.”

Loyalty-program revenue, as well as international, domestic and basic economy-class revenue all rose from a year earlier and unit revenue, which measures pricing power, turned positive over the same quarter of 2023.

United Airlines (UAL) recently released their earnings report for the fourth quarter of 2024, and the results are impressive. Despite challenges in the aviation industry due to the ongoing pandemic and fluctuating fuel prices, United Airlines managed to exceed expectations and deliver strong financial performance.

Key highlights from the earnings report include:

    – Total revenue for the fourth quarter reached a record high, surpassing analysts’ estimates.
    – The company reported a significant increase in net income compared to the previous quarter, showcasing its ability to adapt and thrive in a challenging environment.
    – Passenger traffic and revenue per available seat mile (RASM) also showed positive growth, indicating a strong demand for United Airlines’ services.
    – The company’s cost-saving measures and strategic initiatives have helped improve profitability and strengthen its financial position.

Overall, United Airlines’ fourth-quarter earnings reflect its resilience and ability to navigate turbulent market conditions. With a solid financial foundation and a commitment to innovation and customer service, the company is well-positioned for continued success in the future.

Investors and industry analysts are optimistic about United Airlines’ performance and outlook, with many viewing the company as a strong contender in the competitive aviation sector. • Philippe Clement sends firm warning to Manchester United, explains Rangers plan for Europa League clash

Manchester United are back in Europa League action when they host Rangers on Thursday night.

Two matches remain in the League Phase of the Europa League, with Manchester United sitting in seventh place, knowing the top eight will progress to the knockout stages.

United face Rangers following a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Rangers progressed to the Scottish Cup last 16 at the weekend, with a 5-0 win over Fraserburgh.

The Gers are currently placed second in the Scottish Premiership, three points behind leaders Celtic. They also stand a chance of reaching the knockout phase and will be looking to cause an upset at Old Trafford.

This will be the first time the two teams meet in the Europa League. They previously clashed four times in the Champions League, with one draw and three United wins.

Paul Clement sends warning to Manchester United

Rangers manager Philippe Clement wants his players to go to Old Trafford with ambition.

It will be the first meeting between the two clubs since 2010 when United won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Wayne Rooney.

United won’t have Rooney this time and Clement will be hoping his side can take advantage of their opponent’s questionable form.

That said, United are unbeaten in Europe this season.

“I want pressure, to be very clear,” Clement said, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “I want pressure on the team.

“I want my team to be ambitions. And if we are somewhere, that we have higher ambitions to make it better. So, that’s what we’re going to do.

“The team has worked really hard to be in a good position in this Europa League. They did really well in this Europa League.

“We know what Manchester United are. We know their level. But we’re going to go there to fight and to show ourselves and to do something really special. That’s our ambition, to go there and to do something special.”

    Manchester United face in-form Rangers

Rangers’ 5-0 win over Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup was their third successive win.

Clement’s side stretched their unbeaten run to seven matches ahead of their trip to Manchester.

United’s first team have made hard work of their European campaign, dropping points against FC Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce – but still managed to win their last two matches in the competition.

Rangers drew 1-1 with Tottenham in their previous Europa League outing. They also scored four goals in their games against FCSB and Nice.

  • Protecting The United States From Foreign Terrorists And Other National Security And Public Safety Threats – The White House

PROTECTING THE UNITED STATES FROM FOREIGN TERRORISTS AND OTHER

NATIONAL SECURITY AND PUBLIC SAFETY THREATS

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), 8 U.S.C. 1101 et seq., and section 301 of title 3, United States Code, it is hereby ordered:

Section 1.  Policy and Purpose.  (a)  It is the policy of the United States to protect its citizens from aliens who intend to commit terrorist attacks, threaten our national security, espouse hateful ideology, or otherwise exploit the immigration laws for malevolent purposes.

    (b)  To protect Americans, the United States must be vigilant during the visa-issuance process to ensure that those aliens approved for admission into the United States do not intend to harm Americans or our national interests.  More importantly, the United States must identify them before their admission or entry into the United States.  And the United States must ensure that admitted aliens and aliens otherwise already present in the United States do not bear hostile attitudes toward its citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles, and do not advocate for, aid, or support designated foreign terrorists and other threats to our national security.

Sec. 2.  Enhanced Vetting and Screening Across Agencies.

    (a)  The Secretary of State, in coordination with the Attorney General, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and the Director of National Intelligence, shall promptly:

    (i)    identify all resources that may be used to ensure that all aliens seeking admission to the United States, or who are already in the United States, are vetted and screened to the maximum degree possible;

    (ii)   determine the information needed from any country to adjudicate any visa, admission, or other benefit under the INA for one of its nationals, and to ascertain whether the individual seeking the benefit is who the individual claims to be and that the individual is not a security or public-safety threat;

(iii)  re-establish a uniform baseline for screening and vetting standards and procedures, consistent with the uniform baseline that existed on January 19, 2021, that will be used for any alien seeking a visa or immigration benefit of any kind; and

(iv)   vet and screen to the maximum degree possible all aliens who intend to be admitted, enter, or are already inside the United States, particularly those aliens coming from regions or nations with identified security risks.

    (b)  Within 60 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of State, the Attorney General, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and the Director of National Intelligence shall jointly submit to the President, through the Assistant to the President for Homeland Security, a report:

    (i)   identifying countries throughout the world for which vetting and screening information is so deficient as to warrant a partial or full suspension on the admission of nationals from those countries pursuant to section 212(f) of the INA (8 U.S.C. 1182(f)); and

(ii)  identifying how many nationals from those countries have entered or have been admitted into the United States on or since January 20, 2021, and any other information the Secretaries and Attorney General deem relevant to the actions or activities of such nationals since their admission or entry to the United States.

    (c)  Whenever information is identified that would support the exclusion or removal of any alien described in subsection 2(b), the Secretary of Homeland Security shall take immediate steps to exclude or remove that alien unless she determines that doing so would inhibit a significant pending investigation or prosecution of the alien for a serious criminal offense or would be contrary to the national security interests of the United States.

Sec. 3.  Additional Measures to Protect the Nation.  As soon as possible, but no later than 30 days from the date of this order, the Secretary of State, in coordination with the Attorney General, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and the Director of National Intelligence, shall also:

    (a)  Evaluate and adjust all existing regulations, policies, procedures, and provisions of the Foreign Service Manual, or guidance of any kind pertaining to each of the grounds of inadmissibility listed in sections 212(a)(2)-(3) of the INA (8 U.S.C. 1182(a)(2)-(3)), to ensure the continued safety and security of the American people and our constitutional republic;

    (b)  Ensure that sufficient safeguards are in place to prevent any refugee or stateless individual from being admitted to the United States without undergoing stringent identification verification beyond that required of any other alien seeking admission or entry to the United States;

    (c)  Evaluate all visa programs to ensure that they are not used by foreign nation-states or other hostile actors to harm the security, economic, political, cultural, or other national interests of the United States;

    (d)  Recommend any actions necessary to protect the American people from the actions of foreign nationals who have undermined or seek to undermine the fundamental constitutional rights of the American people, including, but not limited to, our Citizens’ rights to freedom of speech and the free exercise of religion protected by the First Amendment, who preach or call for sectarian violence, the overthrow or replacement of the culture on which our constitutional Republic stands, or who provide aid, advocacy, or support for foreign terrorists;

    (e)  Ensure the devotion of adequate resources to identify and take appropriate action for offenses described in 8 U.S.C. 1451;

    (f)  Evaluate the adequacy of programs designed to ensure the proper assimilation of lawful immigrants into the United States, and recommend any additional measures to be taken that promote a unified American identity and attachment to the Constitution, laws, and founding principles of the United States; and

    (g)  Recommend any additional actions to protect the American people and our constitutional republic from foreign threats.

Sec. 4.  General Provisions.  (a)  Nothing in this order shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect:

    (i)   the authority granted by law to an executive department or agency, or the head thereof; or

(ii)  the functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.

    (b)  This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.

    (c)  This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

  • Coco Gauff hopes TikTok ban in United States is short-lived

MELBOURNE, Australia — American tennis star Coco Gauff lamented the loss of TikTok’s app back home, writing on a TV camera lens “RIP TikTok USA” and drawing a broken heart right after winning a match at the Australian Open to reach the quarterfinals.

Gauff’s 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Belinda Bencic in the Grand Slam tournament’s main stadium finished Sunday afternoon local time in Melbourne — about an hour after TikTok could no longer be found on prominent app stores on Saturday in the United States.

The TikTok website told users that the short-form social media video platform was no longer available. The blackout began just hours before a federal ban on TikTok took effect.

However, on Sunday afternoon, TikTok said it was “in the process” of restoring service to users in the United States. The company thanked President-elect Donald Trump, who on Sunday said he planned to sign an executive order after his inauguration Monday to give TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, more time to find an approved buyer before the popular video-sharing platform is subject to a permanent U.S. ban.

Gauff, who has more than 750,000 followers on TikTok, said Sunday that she would probably have more time to pursue other interests with the app inaccessible on her phone in Melbourne.

“I could not access it after my match. I honestly thought I would be able to get away with it because I was in Australia,” Gauff said at her news conference. “Hopefully it comes back. … It’s really sad. I’ve been on the app since it was called Musical.ly. I love TikTok. It’s like an escape. I honestly do that before matches. I guess it will force me to read books more — be more of a productive human, probably. Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise.”

Tennis players at many tournaments often are handed a pen after a win so they can deliver whatever thoughts they want via the lens of a courtside camera. In this case, Gauff paused a bit to think and said, “I think I’m going to go with this one,” before offering her TikTok message in blue ink.

At the French Open in June 2022, after reaching her first Grand Slam final, a teenage Gauff referred to a recent spate of mass shootings in the U.S. at the time and wrote in marker: “Peace. End gun violence.”

Now 20, Gauff is one of the top players in her sport. She won the 2023 US Open and is ranked No. 3.

Users opening the TikTok app Saturday encountered a pop-up message preventing them from scrolling videos that read, “Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now.”

“A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S.,” the message said. “Unfortunately that means you can’t use TikTok for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office.”

Even as TikTok was flickering back on Sunday, it remained unavailable for download in Apple and Google’s app stores. Neither Apple or Google responded to messages seeking comment Sunday.

Gauff added Sunday that she had a feeling TikTok would somehow come back.

Defending Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka, who lives in Miami and is a huge TikTok fan, said she also hoped for a quick resolution.

The Belarusian has over 500,000 followers on TikTok and re-created one of her viral dance videos with fans at Rod Laver Arena after her opening-round victory a week ago.

“This isn’t something we can control, and I hope they’re going to figure it out, because I love TikTok,” she said.

Gauff frequently has posted on TikTok, often mimicking popular trends.

“I feel this is the third or fourth time this has happened. This time it’s just like, ‘Whatever.’ If I wake up and it doesn’t work, fine. I’m done wasting my time figuring it out,” Gauff said earlier during the Australian Open. “I see there’s a new app called RedNote that a lot of people are migrating over to. So I feel, regardless, people are going to be fine because people are always going to migrate to another app.”

She added that she hoped TikTok would survive, calling it “a great thing for a lot of small businesses in our country, and a lot of creators make money on it and have the chance to spread stories. Personally, me, a lot of great stories I’ve heard are from TikTok and connecting with people has been [through] TikTok. I hope it will stay, [but] obviously I don’t know all the security issues and things like that.”

In Washington, lawmakers and administration officials have long raised concerns about the app, which they see as a national security threat due to its Chinese ownership. ByteDance is a technology company based in Beijing that operates the well-known video editing app CapCut and Lemon8, both of which were also unavailable for service Saturday evening.

The federal law required ByteDance to cut ties with TikTok by Sunday or face a nationwide ban. The statute was passed by Congress in April after it was included as part of a high-priority $95 billion package that provided foreign aid to Ukraine and Israel. President Joe Biden quickly signed it, and then TikTok and ByteDance quickly sued on First Amendment grounds.

While defending the law in court, the Biden administration argued it was concerned about TikTok collecting vast swaths of U.S. user data that could fall into the hands of the Chinese government through coercion.

Officials have also warned that the algorithm that fuels what users see on the app is vulnerable to manipulation by Chinese authorities, who can use it to shape content on the platform in a way that’s difficult to detect. But to date, the U.S. has not publicly provided evidence of TikTok handing user data to Chinese authorities or tinkering with its algorithm to benefit Chinese interests.

The Supreme Court unanimously decided Friday that the risk to national security posed by TikTok’s ties to China overcomes concerns about limiting speech by the app or its 170 million users in the United States.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Coco Gauff, the rising tennis star, has expressed her thoughts on the recent ban of TikTok in the United States. The 16-year-old athlete took to social media to share her hopes that the ban will be short-lived, as she enjoys using the popular app to connect with fans and share snippets of her life off the court.

Gauff, who has gained a large following on TikTok for her fun and engaging videos, expressed her disappointment at the potential loss of this platform. She emphasized the importance of social media in connecting with fans and building her personal brand, and she hopes that a solution can be found to allow TikTok to continue operating in the United States.

As a young athlete who is constantly looking for ways to engage with her audience and showcase her personality, Gauff understands the impact that social media can have on her career. She remains hopeful that the ban will be resolved quickly so that she can continue to connect with her fans in a fun and interactive way.

In the meantime, Gauff is encouraging her followers to stay positive and keep supporting her through other social media channels. She remains optimistic that a solution will be found, and she is looking forward to continuing to share her journey with her fans, whether it be on TikTok or another platform.

  • Manchester United in talks to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce

Manchester United are in talks to sign left-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.

Discussions have begun over the 20-year-old as United line up options ahead of making decisions on ins and outs this month.

Nothing is yet agreed but dialogue is progressing with head coach Ruben Amorim keen to add reinforcements in the January window amid a run of form that has seen his new side slip to just 10 points above the Premier League’s relegation zone.

Dorgu, who has been capped four times by Denmark, has made 43 first-team appearances for Lecce having joined from Danish club Nordsjælland in 2022. He has scored three times in Serie A this term.

He signed a new contract in October that runs until 2028.

United’s squad is in need of more players suited to Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation with Dorgu, who has featured on both flanks, seen as one of that profile.

Diogo Dalot is a specialist right-back yet has been deployed in the left-wing back role, while first-choice left-back Luke Shaw has been yet to make a start in any competition this season due to injuries, having been limited to just 12 Premier League starts in 2023-24.

The Athletic reported earlier in January that United were exploring a loan exit for left-back Tyrell Malacia.

The right-sided wing-back role has most often been filled by Amad, who is naturally a wide forward, or the versatile defender Noussair Mazraoui, who joined from Bayern Munich in the summer.

Ruben Amorim’s starting XI is starting to take shape… and there’s some bad news

‘Dorgu could add the dynamism United have been sorely lacking’

Analysis by Manchester United correspondent Mark Critchley

After nailing their colours to the Amorim mast, United need to significantly reshape the squad so that it suits his 3-4-2-1 system and no more so than at wing-back.

United’s system requires players in those positions who have the athleticism and physicality to dominate an entire flank contributing at both ends of the pitch.

Left wing-back is especially a priority. United spent the vast majority of last season without a natural left-footed full-back due to Shaw and Malacia’s lack of availability. Shaw’s injury problems have persisted, while Malacia appears unfancied by Amorim.

Dalot has deputised in the role so far but is naturally a full-back and lacks some of the attacking thrust which made Amorim’s wing-backs such an integral part of his system at Sporting CP.

Dorgu, meanwhile, is left-footed and has even operated as a right winger for Lecce this season, with three goals and one assist for the relegation-threatened Serie A side.

Should the Denmark international become Amorim’s first signing, the hope would be that he provides the dynamism on the left flank that United have been sorely lacking during his first two months in charge.

According to reports, Manchester United are in talks to sign Nigerian forward Patrick Dorgu from Serie A club Lecce. The 21-year-old has been making a name for himself in Italy and has caught the eye of several top clubs, with United reportedly leading the race for his signature.

Dorgu is known for his pace, skill, and eye for goal, and has been compared to former United striker Romelu Lukaku. The Red Devils are keen to bolster their attacking options, and see Dorgu as a player who could make an immediate impact in the Premier League.

Negotiations are said to be at an advanced stage, with both clubs working towards a deal that could see Dorgu move to Old Trafford in the coming weeks. United fans are excited about the prospect of seeing the young forward in action, and are hopeful that he can help the team challenge for major honours next season.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing transfer story.
