  • Angel Reese becomes first player ejected in Unrivaled history

Angel Reese made some history Saturday night, becoming the first player ejected from an Unrivaled game.

Reese, playing for her Rose Basketball Club in the new 3×3 women’s basketball league, was ejected after receiving back-to-back technical fouls in the second quarter of her team’s game against the Laces. A referee called Reese for a foul while she was guarding Tiffany Hayes, who fell to the floor while dribbling toward the basket.

After the call, Reese repeatedly waved her hand in the direction of both the official on the baseline who made the call and Hayes. The official — appearing to think the motion was directed at him — called the first technical foul. Reese was then handed the second tech after arguing with the officials.

The WNBA star took to social media after the game, which the Rose won 83-69, writing a series of posts on X about the incident. “Free me,” she wrote in one post, commenting on a video of her after the ejection. In another: “Happy (Black History Month). Y’all know I had to be the first.”

Reese had 15 rebounds, six points and three assists in seven minutes before the ejection. Chelsea Gray, who had 28 points, eight assists and three rebounds, was named the Player of the Game.

Unrivaled’s season takes place during the WNBA offseason as an option for players to expand their games. The league features 36 players (six players per team) and includes many of the top WNBA players, such as league co-founders Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, as well as Reese, who recently wrapped up her rookie season with the Chicago Sky.

  • Unrivaled unveils 1-on-1 format with $250,000 top prize

Unrivaled will crown its first one-on-one champion on Feb. 14.

The new 3-on-3 women’s basketball league announced the rules for the tournament that will be played over three days. Thirty players will be divided into four pods with the eventual champion winning $250,000. The runner-up will get $50,000, and each semifinalist will earn $25,000. Players on the winner’s 3-on-3 team will each receive $10,000.

Fans will vote for where players will be seeded in their pods, which were determined by distributing talent, position and compelling matchups.

Rounds up until the finals will be single elimination with games played to 11 points or 10 minutes, whichever is reached first.

The finals will be a best-of-three series with the winning score for each game also to 11. It will be traditional scoring with baskets worth either two or three points.

There will be a seven-second shot clock for each possession, and a player keeps the ball after scoring.

Players have unlimited fouls, though if they foul on consecutive possessions in non-shooting situations a point will be awarded to the player on offense. That player will also keep possession of the ball.

Similar to the league, a foul on a shot will result in one free throw worth the same as the attempt. So a foul on a 3-pointer would be worth three points and a 2-pointer would be worth two. A foul on a made basket would result in one extra point being awarded on a made free throw.

Brittney Griner, Stefanie Dolson, Sabrina Ionescu, Cameron Brink, Courtney Vandersloot and Angel Reese aren’t participating in the tournament.

  • Why is Alyssa Thomas not playing against Rose BC? Laces star’s absence in Unrivaled explored (Jan. 27)

Earlier this month, Alyssa Thomas became one of the many women to make history by partaking in the first season of Unrivaled. However, after just a handful of games, she finds herself on the sidelines.

Ahead of Monday’s slate of games, Unrivaled announced roster changes. Thomas and Jackie Young were ruled out of Laces’ matchup against Rose. In a corresponding move, Natisha Hiedeman has been recalled from Phantom and assigned to Laces.

Thomas is out for Laces because of a knee injury she suffered in their last matchup against Vinyl over the weekend.

Laces have been one of the top teams in Unrivaled to start the season, coming out of the gates with a 3-0 record. They are one of two undefeated teams remaining alongside Napheesa Collier’s Lunar Owls.

Down a pair of their top contributors, Laces have a tough challenge ahead as they attempt to remain undefeated against Angel Reese‘s Rose.

This matchup is set to tip-off at 8:30 pm ET and will air on ESPN.

Thomas has averaged 14.7 points, 11.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists in three games.

Alyssa Thomas opens up on the benefits of playing locally in Unrivaled

Like most of her WNBA counterparts, Alyssa Thomas has spent her offseasons playing overseas. That’s changed this offseason and the veteran forward opened up on one of the biggest positives of Unrivaled.

Unrivaled offers some of the highest salaries in women’s sports, and gives players a chance to stay local. Following the Laces’ last matchup, Thomas reflected on not having to travel in the offseason. She said she is looking forward to being able to make up for lost time with her family while still supporting herself financially.

“Somebody that’s played overseas for my whole entire career,” Thomas said. “I’ve missed out on a lot of things, lot of holidays and spending time with family.

“It’s moreso things like that and having an opportunity just to make up on lost time with family.”

Thomas has spent the last decade in the WNBA with the Connecticut Sun, where she was picked fourth overall in 2014. In her international career, she has represented teams in Korea, Turkey, the Czech Republic and China.
