  • Unsung heroes brave the bitter cold to keep Pittsburgh moving

    Timothy Jones knows cold.

But bundled in a heavy coat and snug-fit, black wool cap, the Shaler man appeared unfazed Tuesday morning as he quietly paced in one of the region’s coldest spots: a narrow walkway, exposed to the elements 60 feet above the ice-covered Ohio River, at the lock-and-dam facility Jones helps run.

The air barely broke 2 degrees on the riverbank below; the wind chill checked in at minus 10. Patches of ice formed in Jones’ facial hair.

“Nah, this isn’t bad — bad is when the air temperature is minus 10 and the wind is blowing 30, 35, 40 mph,” quipped Jones, 53, lockmaster at the Emsworth Locks and Dams in suburban Pittsburgh.

“Yeah, it gets cold up here, and people don’t always realize that,” he added. “It’s always cold, it’s always windy. But, these guys are so used to it, it’s just an everyday thing.”

Jones is one of the hundreds of die-hard workers tasked with keeping the Pittsburgh area running when temperatures plummet or weather turns treacherous — as forecasters expect it to do through much of the week.

Those workers count among their peers Postal Service mail carriers, public works employees salting roads or riding garbage trucks, crews of “snowfighters” keeping traffic moving at Pittsburgh International Airport — even young men and women braving subzero wind chills to corral shopping carts in supermarket parking lots.

It’s hard to put a dollar figure on Pittsburgh’s — or Pennsylvania’s — cold-weather economy. But experts say numbers related to it are pretty big.

Countless industries depend on products and cargo shipped via the Ohio River, where a vessel’s 980-mile journey begins at the Emsworth Locks and Dams and ends in New Orleans.

More than 44.6 million tons of cargo passed through Pittsburgh-area locks and dams such as Jones’ facility in 2022, officials said. That’s roughly the same amount that passes through the Port of Seattle each year.

    Clearing roads essential

Keeping the state’s roadways clear also is a large task, officials said.

About a half-million vehicles drive on the Pennsylvania Turnpike each day — from tractor-trailers shipping goods between Chicago and New York City to tourists or Pennsylvanians commuting to work.

Keeping the iconic highway open in winter costs roughly half of the turnpike’s $87 million maintenance budget, spokeswoman Marissa Orbanek told TribLive.

Private businesses also rely on people working in the cold.

Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, would not comment on its Pennsylvania operations. But officials there confirmed the company spent more than $8 million last year in winter supplies for its staffers, about 30,000 of whom work in Pennsylvania.

For those not relying on a cold snap for goods or a paycheck, relief won’t be coming Wednesday.

Though sunshine is expected in Pittsburgh, the day’s high temperature is forecast at 13 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Moon Township. The mercury could drop to 5 degrees Wednesday night.

Thursday should be relatively warmer, but Pittsburgh isn’t expected to inch above the freezing mark until Sunday, when meteorologists say temperatures could climb to the mid-30s.

    Postal carrier delivers

Snow was falling with the temperatures last week as Chris Baker, a Postal Service mailman — his formal title is “city carrier” — exited his iconic white mail truck on Irwin’s Longview Drive.

Baker’s been delivering mail here since he started working for the Postal Service about five years ago.

He also has developed a rhythm to walking his route. He wraps up his “Longview loop” each day in 17 to 20 minutes, depending on the weather.

“We all know it — neither snow nor rain,” Baker said, referencing the familiar Postal Service saying as he dropped a handful of letters and a Norwin Star newspaper into a mailbox.

Delivering the mail through all sorts of weather is no small task.

There are nearly 4,900 carrier routes in Baker’s district — Pennsylvania No. 1, which serves ZIP codes beginning with 150 to 179, a Postal Service spokesman told TribLive.

Those routes account for more than 2.8 million potential deliveries per day in Western Pennsylvania. Last week, Baker had more than 600 stops on his daily route.

Baker said he previously worked for 18 years — and indoors — with special-needs children. He’s not particularly an “outdoor person,” but he enjoys delivering the mail — even in the snow or during cold snaps.

Baker said it’s important to dress in layers. But he will not glove his right pointer finger; sometimes, he said, you just need bare skin to leaf through letters.

“It really is a lot more physical,” said Baker, 48, sporting his profession’s thick, navy blue jacket and winter pants as he plowed through a snow drift.

“You can ask any mailman, though,” he added. “We’ll take this over rain any day.”

    Clearing the runways

When the weather gets grim, Jim Moorhead enlists the “snowfighters” at Pittsburgh International Airport.

The Findlay airport’s maintenance and facilities teams, which account for more than 100 workers, tend to most outdoor surfaces at the 9,000-acre site.

“It’s roughly like managing a two-lane highway — that’s about 500 miles along,” Moorhead said with a laugh.

When winter weather threatens to slow or stop airport operations, the crews shovel snow from roads and lots. They tend to cold jetways, too.

And because they can’t use rock salt on an aircraft runway, they remove snow manually, with brooms and shovels, making sure everything stays as dry as possible, Moorhead said.

Sometimes, the “snowfighters” bring in massive machinery, officials said. One airport vehicle’s propeller — think of the chute on a walking snowblower — stands nearly 7 feet tall and can blow snow 250 feet at a speed of 25 mph.

The Pittsburgh airport’s snowfighting team has won national awards multiple times, officials said. When a lake effect snowstorm dumped nearly 3 feet of snow last month in Erie, PIT’s team was the one called in to help.

Moorhead said it’s hard to overestimate the importance of the team in keeping the airport functioning.

“You lose the respect of your tenants if you start closing because of the weather, and you can’t put a number on that,” said Moorhead, 50, who lives in the South Hills and has worked at the Pittsburgh-area airport for about 30 years.

“Snowfighters” will use an arsenal of 15 machines to battle an “average” snowstorm. A heavy snow could call for 30 of them.

“They’re called snowfighters because you’re putting them in the middle of a snowstorm when you’re telling everyone else to stay inside — it takes a unique individual to do that,” Moorhead said.

“When you get into a bitter cold, like we are now, it becomes a tougher fight,” he added. “But you can count on Pittsburgh to be open.”

    Some welcome the cold, snow

Some in the region welcome winter storms and cold temperatures.

Just ask Brett Cook, the vice president and general manager at the Seven Springs, Hidden Valley and Laurel Mountain resorts.

Cook started as a seasonal lift operator at a Harrisburg-area resort in 2009. He was quickly hooked.

“It was one day in, and I said to myself, ‘I’ve got to find a way to do this year-round!’ laughed Cook, 43, who moved to Somerset County in 2022.

Winter tourism is a booming business.

The size of the skiing and snowboarding market in the U.S. topped $5.5 billion in 2023, according to the firm Grand View Research. And it’s expected to keep growing, with some analysts expecting it to grow 5% a year through 2030.

Travelers also are drawn to the Pittsburgh area, in part, for winter amenities like Seven Springs and the scenic Laurel Highlands, said Emily Hatfield, a spokeswoman for the tourism agency VisitPittsburgh.

About 1.7 million people stay overnight in the area during the winter months — or the first quarter of the year, Hatfield said. Nearly two in every five people who come here participate in outdoor activities year-round.

Vail Resorts declined to provide visitor counts or dollars spent at Seven Springs, which is one of nearly 40 resorts it owns and operates across North America. Opened in 1937, Seven Springs today boasts 33 ski and snowboarding trails, and 285 acres of skiable terrain.

For Cook, though, the equation is simple: The colder it is, the better the conditions are for skiing.

“Essentially, man-made snow is a ball of ice, pellets of ice,” Cook said. “And it’s more much dense than actual snow. So, when it gets colder, the more dry the air, the silkier the snow is.”

“This is what we look forward to all year, that natural snow,” he added. “That’s what we work for.”

  • Notre Dame football’s unsung hero is developing crucial skill to become unstoppable

Notre Dame football’s narrative has always been that they are skill positions away from being National Championship contenders. Well, the Irish are now just one win away from rewriting history and etching their names in the history books.

Irish wide outs are showing national media that they are the real deal and can get space and make 50/50 catches. Players like Beaux Collins and Jordan Faison have stepped up all season long and especially in the playoffs. However, the Irish sophomore wide receiver just had a career day in the CFP semifinals.

Notre Dame football’s unsung hero crucial skill makes him unstoppable

The blue and gold defeated the Nittany Lions 27-24 in a second half shoot out. Riley Leonard threw for 223 yards and may have found his new favorite wide receiver in Jaden Greathouse.

Entering Thursday night, Greathouse had just three catches for 14 yards, and he left Miami with career day where he hauled in seven catches for 105 yards. The sophomore wide receiver out of Austin, Texas had multiple game saving catches and showed Irish faithful they have a receiver who has the skill to make jump ball catches on either key third downs or in the red zone.

Greathouse seven catches and 105 yards is a new career high, and he found the ball when the Irish needed him to when it mattered most. Notre Dame trailed 10 early and went on to score 17 unanswered because of no.1. it was 3rd and long and Riley Leonard threw a 50/50 ball to 6-1 wide receiver, and he leaped up and made a contested catch than extended the drive. Irish would eventually score just five plays later and take their first lead 17-10.

Greathouse would then have the best drive of any wide receiver this year, where he caught three passes for 71 yards, including the massive 54 yard game tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Greathouse has gone viral for breaking two Penn State defender ankles and getting wide open to secure the touchdown with just four minutes left in the game.

His production didn’t stop there. His final catch came on a 3rd-and-3 at the Penn State 35 yard line, and he secured a weak spot in Penn State defense and was able to pick up 10 more yards and secure a spot in Mitch Jeter field goal range. Jeter three-of-seven catches came on third down and all extended the drives and moved the change for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame wide outs are all having similar seasons, however throughout the playoffs it seems someone different steps up big every game. Round one against Indiana it was Jordan Faison who had a career day. He secured seven catches for 89 yards. If Faison, Greathouse and Evans can work together and get open against Ohio State, this skill position could cause issues for the Buckeyes.

Greathouse career day will be remembered for a long time, and he etched his name in the Notre Dame football history books. The chemistry between Riley Leonard and Greathouse was tremendous all game and hopefully he can do similar number in the National Championship. His skill to track the ball and make 50/50 catches is a skill Irish fans have wanted for a long time and could be unstoppable with Leonard and this rushing attack.

In the world of college football, Notre Dame is known for producing top-tier talent and consistently fielding competitive teams. However, amidst the spotlight on star players and flashy performances, there is one player who often goes unnoticed but is quietly developing a crucial skill that could make him unstoppable on the field.

That player is none other than Notre Dame’s unsung hero, a hard-working and dedicated athlete who has been putting in the work behind the scenes to improve his game. While his name may not be splashed across headlines or trending on social media, his impact on the team is undeniable.

What sets this player apart is his relentless pursuit of excellence and his commitment to constantly improving. He understands that success is not given, but earned through hard work and perseverance. And one skill he has been honing that could take his game to the next level is his ability to read and react to the game.

By studying film, analyzing opponents’ tendencies, and understanding the intricacies of the game, this player is developing a football IQ that sets him apart from his peers. His awareness on the field, coupled with his physical abilities, makes him a force to be reckoned with.

As he continues to refine this skill, there is no doubt that Notre Dame’s unsung hero will become a key player in the team’s success. And with his dedication and determination, he has the potential to become an unstoppable force on the football field.

So, while the spotlight may not always be on him, make no mistake – Notre Dame’s unsung hero is quietly working towards greatness, and his development of this crucial skill could be the key to unlocking his full potential and leading the team to victory.

  • Baltimore Ravens Unsung Hero is Team’s Biggest X-Factor

Baltimore Ravens Unsung Hero is Team’s Biggest X-Factor

Perhaps the Baltimore Ravens didn’t really need another wide receiver after all?

While Zay Flowers has gotten most of the attention thanks to a Pro Bowl campaign this season, another Ravens pass-catcher has flown under the radar and has emerged as the club’s biggest X-factor heading into the playoffs.

    Rashod Bateman.

Previously viewed as a first-round bust, Bateman has enjoyed a very impressive 2024 campaign, having caught 40 passes for 680 yards and eight touchdowns going into Baltimore’s season finale against the Cleveland Browns.

Bateman is not just only serving as a reliable option for Lamar Jackson, but he is making big plays.

The 25-year-old is averaging a robust 17 yards per catch this year, which ranks third in the NFL behind Alec Pierce and Jameson Williams.

Sure, Bateman has only logged five grabs over his last three games, but he has reached the end zone thrice during that span, demonstrating his gamebreaking ability.

Contrast that to last season, when the University of Minnesota product totaled 32 receptions for 367 yards and one score, posting a measly 11.5 yards per catch.

It has been night and day for Bateman, and while he still isn’t exactly an elite No. 2 receiver, he has at least done enough to mitigate the Ravens’ need for one.

Remember: Baltimore landed Diontae Johnson at the trade deadline to much fanfare, only to watch Johnson catch one pass before being released.

But all along, Bateman has been quietly comprising a dependable option for Jackson and has played a major role in the superstar quarterback enjoying the best season of his career.

Bateman is not a household name. Heck, he is probably the fourth-most talented receiving weapon on the team behind Flowers and tight ends Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely.

But there is no question that Bateman has played a massive role in the Ravens’ offense hitting another gear this season, and if Baltimore is finally going to get over the hump in the playoffs, it will need Bateman to deliver.

Last year, Bateman managed just four catches for 41 yards in two postseason contests. Something tells me he will be much more prepared this time around.

Make sure you bookmark Baltimore Ravens on SI for the latest news, exclusive interviews, film breakdowns and so much more!

The Baltimore Ravens have a roster full of talented players, but one player who often goes overlooked is their unsung hero, who is also their biggest X-factor. This player is crucial to the team’s success, yet doesn’t always receive the recognition they deserve.

Through their consistent play and ability to make key plays in crucial moments, this unsung hero has become a linchpin for the Ravens. Whether it’s a clutch catch, a crucial block, or a game-changing tackle, this player consistently steps up when the team needs them most.

While star players often receive the spotlight, it’s important to recognize the unsung hero who quietly contributes to the team’s success. Without their contributions, the Ravens would not be the formidable force that they are.

So let’s take a moment to shine a spotlight on the Baltimore Ravens’ unsung hero, who is truly the team’s biggest X-factor. Their impact may not always show up on the stat sheet, but their presence is felt on every play. Here’s to the unsung hero who helps drive the Ravens to victory.

  • Penn State’s unsung backup must continue consistent play against fierce Boise State pass rush

Penn State’s unsung backup must continue consistent play against fierce Boise State pass rush

When the 2024 Boise State Broncos show up in town, Ashton Jeanty’s name goes to the top of the marquee. However, he’s not the only reason Spencer Danielson’s team is 12-1 and the No. 3 overall seed in the 12-team College Football Playoff. Boise State’s defensive line has been an elite unit and could pose a big problem for Penn State’s offense in the Fiesta Bowl quarterfinal on New Year’s Eve.

Defensive coordinator Erik Chinander’s unit is second in the country in sacks per game, averaging 3.8. In the Mountain West Championship Game against UNLV, they sacked quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams six times. With that type of production, they get contributions from all over the defense. 205-pound safety Seyi Oladipo has seven sacks as does 296-pound defensive tackle Braxton Fely, and 5-foot-8 181-pound defensive back Rodney Robinson has four. Still, the real pass-rushing threats are on the edges and will test Penn State backup right tackle Nolan Rucci.

Rucci took over for Anthony Donkoh, who injured his knee on the first play of the game against Minnesota in Week 13 and has not played since. Donkoh beat out Rucci in fall camp after Rucci, the former No. 1 overall recruit in Pennsylvania in 2021 spent his first three collegiate seasons at Wisconsin.

Rucci had struggled in relief allowing four pressures off the bench against the Golden Gophers, three in 49 snaps against Wisconsin, and nine through Week 13. But, since becoming the starter in Week 14, Rucci has given up just three QB pressures and no sacks in 98 pass-blocking reps. He’s been rock solid opposite left tackle Drew Shelton and will need to play that way for the Nittany Lions to advance past Boise State into the CFP semifinal.

On Tuesday in Glendale, Arizona Rucci will spend most of his night lined up across from either Ahmed Hassanein or Jayden Virgin-Morgan, Boise State’s stellar edge rushers. Despite recording just nine sacks, Hassanein finished the year fourth in the country with 60 QB pressures, four more than Penn State’s Abdul Carter, and his pass-rush win–rate of 16.3% is 31st among all players with at least 200 pass-rushing snaps this year. Virgin-Morgan is second on the team with 42 pressures and first with 12 sacks.

Boise State’s team-build is so complimentary on both sides of the football. Because of Jeanty’s prowess, the Broncos are almost always playing in a positive game script and protecting a lead, which naturally forces opponents into obvious passing situations where Hassanein, Virgin-Morgan, and the entire cast of disruptors can pin their ears back and get after the quarterback. Then, Jeanty helps close out the game with long time-consuming drives, so even more than usual, Penn State needs to establish an early lead.

If the Nittany Lions do fall behind, quarterback Drew Allar won’t be the only one with a spotlight on his performance. Rucci and Shelton will be asked to keep him upright against an elite pass rush, and if they can’t, Penn State’s season could end in disappointment.

As Penn State gears up to face off against Boise State in their upcoming game, all eyes are on their starting quarterback and star players. But one player who has been quietly making a significant impact for the team is their backup quarterback.

With injuries plaguing the team’s starting QB, the backup has been thrust into the spotlight and has performed admirably, leading the team to crucial victories. His consistent play and calm demeanor under pressure have been crucial to the team’s success.

Against Boise State’s fierce pass rush, the backup’s performance will be more important than ever. The opposing defense is known for its aggressive blitz packages and relentless pressure on the quarterback, making it crucial for Penn State’s backup to stay composed and make smart decisions with the ball.

While he may not receive the same recognition as the team’s star players, the backup quarterback’s contributions have not gone unnoticed by his teammates and coaches. As they face off against Boise State, the team will be counting on him to continue his consistent play and lead them to victory.

So, as the spotlight shines on Penn State’s star players, let’s not forget about the unsung backup who has been quietly leading the team to success. Let’s cheer him on as he faces off against Boise State’s fierce pass rush and continues to prove his worth to the team.

  • Numeric Keypads: The Unsung Heroes of Data Entry

Numeric Keypads: The Unsung Heroes of Data Entry

In the world of data entry, numeric keypads are often overlooked and underappreciated. While most people focus on the importance of keyboards and mouse input devices, numeric keypads quietly play a crucial role in entering numerical data quickly and efficiently.

Numeric keypads are typically found on the right side of a standard keyboard and consist of a grid of numbers, mathematical symbols, and other function keys. They are commonly used in a variety of industries, including accounting, finance, retail, and data entry.

One of the main advantages of numeric keypads is their speed and efficiency in entering numerical data. Instead of having to hunt for numbers on the top row of a keyboard, users can quickly and accurately input numbers using the keypad without having to look down at the keys. This can save a significant amount of time, especially when dealing with large amounts of numerical data.

Numeric keypads also offer additional functionality, such as the ability to perform calculations on the fly. Many keypads include mathematical symbols like plus, minus, multiply, and divide keys, allowing users to quickly perform basic calculations without the need for a separate calculator.

In addition to their speed and efficiency, numeric keypads also help reduce the risk of errors in data entry. By providing a dedicated set of keys for numerical input, users are less likely to make mistakes when entering numbers, resulting in more accurate and reliable data.

Despite their usefulness, numeric keypads are often overlooked in favor of more flashy and advanced input devices. However, for anyone who regularly works with numerical data, numeric keypads are essential tools that can greatly improve productivity and accuracy.

In conclusion, numeric keypads may be the unsung heroes of data entry, but their importance cannot be understated. From their speed and efficiency to their ability to reduce errors, numeric keypads play a crucial role in entering numerical data quickly and accurately. So next time you’re crunching numbers, don’t forget to give your numeric keypad the appreciation it deserves.

  • A decade in the making, an unsung hero’s breakthrough year is just the beginning

A decade in the making, an unsung hero’s breakthrough year is just the beginning

“He was playing well, and it seemed like everything was going his way – he was serving at such a high percentage,” Thompson said.

“But in saying that, the game I got broken [in the first set] I just made three loose errors – probably uncharacteristic errors – and it cost me.

“It’s tough, when a guy’s that big and serving that well, just to try and build some rhythm.”

    Jordan Thompson’s 2024 highlights

    • Los Cabos Open winner (maiden ATP singles title)
    • US Open doubles champion (first grand slam title)
    • Wimbledon doubles finalist
    • US Open singles fourth round (second time in his career reaching the second week of a grand slam)
    • Paris Masters quarterfinalist (first Masters final eight appearance)
    • Three other ATP quarterfinal appearances and a semi-final run at the Brisbane International
    • Biggest singles wins: Top 10 stars Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud (twice) and Rafael Nadal

It ends a dream 2024 for Thompson, who spent 11 years toiling on the global circuit showing signs of his promise without truly harnessing his potential.

But his triumph over Nadal, his “childhood idol”, proved the catalyst for a remarkable rise to No.26 in the world.

Come the Brisbane clash with Berrettini, currently ranked No. 34, Thompson was far from his best.

However, for all the animated yelling and gesturing he sent towards his coach’s box, he was willing to mix up his game, changing where he stood near the baseline late as Berrettini went to serve while eagerly attacking the net.

But, as he prepares to face American rising star Alex Michelsen in the Brisbane International’s second round, he pledged his heroics of this year would simply lay the foundation for a more palpable 2025.

    Loading

“I hope so, I mean everyone on tour is so good, and it feels like every match is nearly a 50-50 battle,” Thompson said.

“I was playing Berrettini … I don’t know how he’s not seeded. This is one of the strongest tournaments of the year, it always is, so it’s good practice for Melbourne.

“In the last couple of years it’s been my mindset [which has changed]. I’ve been guilty of just being complacent and making balls and just competing and relying on my legs and my wheels to try and make points.

“Now, I’m trying to be more aggressive and take the game on a bit more.”

As we near the end of the decade, it’s impossible not to reflect on the incredible journey of one unsung hero who has finally broken through in 2020. After ten long years of hard work, dedication, and countless setbacks, this individual has finally achieved the recognition and success they have always deserved.

Their resilience, determination, and unwavering belief in themselves serve as an inspiration to us all, reminding us that anything is possible with hard work, dedication, and a never-give-up attitude.

So here’s to the unsung hero who has finally broken through in 2020 – may this be just the first of many incredible achievements to come. Cheers to a decade in the making and a future filled with endless possibilities.

Celebrating the Contributions of Ann: A True Unsung Hero

Ann is a name that may not be widely recognized, but her contributions to society are truly remarkable. She is a true unsung hero whose efforts have made a significant impact on the lives of many.

Ann is a dedicated volunteer who has spent countless hours working to improve the lives of those in need. Whether it is serving meals at a homeless shelter, tutoring children in need, or organizing community clean-up events, Ann is always willing to lend a helping hand.

One of Ann’s most notable contributions is her work with a local charity that provides support to families affected by domestic violence. Ann has been a driving force behind the organization’s fundraising efforts, helping to raise thousands of dollars to support their programs and services.

In addition to her volunteer work, Ann is also a devoted advocate for social justice and equality. She has been a vocal supporter of causes such as LGBTQ rights, racial equality, and women’s empowerment. Ann’s passion for these issues has inspired others to take action and make a difference in their communities.

Despite her many accomplishments, Ann remains humble and modest about her contributions. She does not seek recognition or praise for her work, but instead focuses on the impact she can make on the lives of those in need.

As we celebrate Ann and her contributions, it is important to recognize the countless unsung heroes in our communities who work tirelessly to make the world a better place. These individuals may not receive the recognition they deserve, but their efforts are truly invaluable and deserving of praise.
