  • Update: Keweenaw and Houghton counties under a lakeshore flood advisory until Monday evening

The National Weather Service issued an updated lakeshore flood advisory at 3:38 a.m. EST on Monday in effect until 7 p.m. EST for Keweenaw and Houghton counties.

The weather service says to prepare for, “Minor lakeshore flooding.”

“Some water on low-lying roads and property along the lakeshore,” says the weather service. “Residents on or near the shore should take appropriate action to protect property from rising water levels.”

Deciphering advisories, watches, and warnings: Understanding weather alerts

    • Flash flood warning: Take action!

A flash flood warning is issued when a flash flood is either imminent or already occurring. In flood-prone areas, it’s crucial to move immediately to higher ground. A flash flood is a sudden and violent inundation that can develop within minutes to hours, and it can even happen in areas not currently experiencing rainfall.

    • Flood warning: Take action!

A flood warning is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring.

    • Flood advisory: Be aware:

A flood advisory is released when flooding is not expected to reach a severity level necessitating a warning. Nonetheless, it can still cause considerable inconvenience and, without exercising caution, potentially lead to situations that threaten life and/or property.

    • Flood watch: Be prepared:

A flood watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.

Staying safe during a flood: Recommendations from the weather service

In flood-prone regions or while camping in low-lying areas, understanding and following the weather service flood safety guidelines can be a lifesaver:

    Move to higher ground:

If you’re in a flood-prone area, or if you’re camping in a low-lying spot, move to higher ground as a first step.

    Follow evacuation orders:

When local authorities issue an evacuation order, promptly comply. Before leaving, secure your home by locking it.

    Disconnect utilities and appliances:

If time permits, disconnect your utilities and appliances. This precaution minimizes electrical hazards during flooding.

Steer clear of flooded basements and submerged areas:

Avoid basements or rooms submerged in water with electrical outlets or cords. Preventing electrical accidents is crucial.

    Swift evacuation for your safety:

If you notice sparks or hear buzzing, crackling, snapping, or popping noises, evacuate immediately. Avoid any water that may be charged with electricity.

    Refrain from walking in floodwaters:

Never attempt to walk through floodwaters, even if they appear shallow. Just 6 inches of fast-moving water can forcefully sweep you off your feet.

    Seek high ground if trapped:

Should you become trapped by moving water, reach the highest point possible and dial 911 to contact emergency services.

When heavy rain occurs, there is a potential for flooding, particularly in areas that are low-lying or prone to floods. It is crucial to never drive through water on the road, even if it appears shallow. According to the weather service, as little as 12 inches of fast-flowing water can carry away most vehicles. Stay safe by being prepared and informed.

  • Michael Strahan’s daughter Isabella shares health update, announces ABC special

Isabella Strahan, the daughter of “Good Morning America” co-anchor Michael Strahan, is sharing a health update six months after being declared cancer-free following a brain cancer diagnosis in October 2023.

“It feels like I’m starting over,” Isabella Strahan said in a new interview with People. “Back to where I started.”

The 20-year-old has resumed her studies at the University of Southern California, where she was a freshman in fall 2023 when she began to experience symptoms that led to a diagnosis of a medulloblastoma, a cancerous and fast-growing brain tumor that develops in the cerebellum, the area of the brain that coordinates movement, according to the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University, where she was treated.

After undergoing emergency surgery to remove a 4-centimeter tumor in the back of her brain, Isabella Strahan endured two more surgeries and four rounds of chemotherapy, treatment she finished last June.

In July, she was declared cancer-free. Since then, the college student said she has focused on continuing her recovery and taking each day at a time.

Take every opportunity. I see the impact that can come from sharing my experience. My diagnosis, it’s a part of me, but it doesn’t define me. I want to be a voice.”

Isabella Strahan’s story from diagnosis to recovery will be told in an upcoming ABC special airing Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 10 p.m., EST, on ABC.

  • Postecoglou shares Maddison injury update as Tottenham star absent v Leicester

Ange Postecoglou has provided an injury update on Tottenham midfielder James Maddison.

Spurs are set to host Leicester City in the Premier League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (26 January), with Paul Merson sharing a Postecoglou sack claim ahead of the clash.

Maddison has missed out on the Tottenham squad entirely, and Postecoglou has provided some clarity on why the midfielder isn’t available to face his former side.

The Spurs boss said, [via Alasdair Gold on X, 26 January], “He’s [Maddison] still a bit sore from the other night. It took a fair bit out of the group and he just wasn’t 100% so he misses out today.

“No no [nothing too serious]. We hope not. Hopefully should be alright for next week.”

James Maddison misses out for Tottenham v Leicester City

Maddison will no doubt be gutted to miss out on the opportunity to play against his former club.

The Englishman was in fine form as Spurs recorded a 3-2 UEFA Europa League win over Hoffenheim at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena on Thursday (23 January), and his quality will certainly be missed on Sunday.

In addition, players often come to life against their former clubs. Therefore, having Maddison in the squad against Leicester would have been very useful as Spurs go in search of a much-needed win.

However, supporters will at least be relieved to learn that the injury is nothing serious, as there would have been much confusion before Postecoglou provided some clarity.

Overall, the North London side should have more than enough to beat the Foxes, even without Maddison.

  • ‘Weekend Update’ On Donald Trump’s First Week Back In The Oval Office

Saturday Night Live‘s “Weekend Update” co-hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost had a lot of material to play with after Donald Trump’s first week back in the Oval Office.

Jost kicked things off, lobbing a jab at Trump for not putting his hand on the swearing-in Bible, the same one that was used during Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration.

“I wish those two could talk to each other: Lincoln could teach Trump a lot about the importance of preserving our union, and Trump could teach Lincoln how to turn your head at the exact right moment,” he said.

Speaking on Trump’s immediate pardon of the Jan. 6 rioters, Che quipped: “President Trump defended his pardon of the January 6 attackers, saying that these are just people who love their country; you know, like how O.J. [Simpson] loved Nicole.”

He continued, referencing Tesla CEO Elon Musk‘s Nazi-like salute following the inauguration, which Musk has since joked about and which Germans have since decried: “Elon Musk was criticized for his speech at a rally after the inauguration in which he appears to give the Nazi salute. But c’mon, Elon Musk is not a Nazi; the Nazis made nice cars.”

Responding to the entertainment news headlines of the week, Che also commented on the Academy Award nominations announcement, made in part by colleague Bowen Yang (along with Rachel Sennott): “The Oscar nominations were announced with the musical Emilia Pérez leading the pack with 13 … total viewers.”

Meanwhile, Jost cautioned viewers about repeating a certain type of behavior on his own game show Pop Culture Jeopardy! “During an episode of Wheel of Fortune this week, a contestant who had just won $40,000 accidentally tackled host Ryan Seacrest. Well I dare you to try on Pop Culture Jeopardy!” he said while wielding a prop gun and sending both himself and Che into a fit of giggles.

Elsewhere on the segment, Ego Nwodim appeared as Giselle, a “concerned businesswoman” who voted for Trump and cautioned all Black women to secure wigs before Trump launched a trade war.

“Black women … it is time to act, and buy all the hair and extensions you need before those tariffs kick in. You heard me. We not getting no more Malaysian hair, no Peruvian hair, Indian or Brazilian. We not even gonna be getting no Irish. We about to be in a pickle, a bald-headed pickle,” she urged.

Andrew Dismukes also appeared alongside his “puppet dad,” who christened Dismukes the “17th most famous” cast member on SNL and Jost as the “16th most famous.”

    See all the bits below:

Weekend Update: Donald Trump’s First Week Back in the Oval Office

After a tumultuous few months since leaving office, former President Donald Trump has returned to the political spotlight with a bang. In his first week back in the Oval Office, Trump wasted no time in making headlines and stirring up controversy.

One of the biggest stories of the week was Trump’s announcement that he would be launching a new social media platform called “Truth Social.” Trump’s decision to create his own platform comes after his ban from major social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook following the January 6th Capitol insurrection.

Trump also made waves with his endorsement of various Republican candidates for the upcoming midterm elections. His endorsements have been closely watched as many view Trump as a kingmaker within the Republican party.

In addition to his political activities, Trump has also been making moves in the business world. He announced the acquisition of a new media company, hinting at his continued interest in shaping the media landscape.

Overall, Trump’s return to the political arena has been met with both excitement and trepidation. His loyal supporters are thrilled to see him back in action, while his critics are concerned about the impact he could have on the political landscape.

It’s clear that Trump’s first week back in the Oval Office is just the beginning of what promises to be an eventful return to the public eye. Love him or hate him, there’s no denying that Trump is a force to be reckoned with in American politics. Stay tuned for more updates on his latest moves and controversies.

  • ‘SNL’ Weekend Update Trashes Trump’s Inauguration, ‘Nazi’ Musk Salute

Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update addressed Donald Trump‘s second inauguration, his dozens of controversial executive orders, and the salute by Elon Musk that has neo-Nazis and white nationalists overjoyed.

Co-anchor Colin Jost noted that during his oath, Trump was seen not placing his hand on the Lincoln Bible.

“Well, he tried to,” Jost said, “but the Bible screamed.”

“During his address, President Trump said he was changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Jost went on. “And, like you, Hillary Clinton could be seen in the background laughing while he said it, while Kamala could be seen silently begging her edible to kick in.”

Michael Che then addressed Trump’s pardoning and commutations of about 1,500 Jan. 6 rioters–among them Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes, who had been convicted of seditious conspiracy and was serving an 18-year sentence.

“And ladies, just like his eyes, he’s single!” Che said of Rhodes, who wears an eye patch.

“President Trump defended his pardon of the January 6 attackers, saying that these are just people that love their country,” Che continued. “You know, like how O.J. loved Nicole.”

Jost addressed another of Trump’s executive actions: directing the federal government to end diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs.

“Worse,” Jost joked, “the order began, ‘Listen up, gaywads.’”

Che also weighed in on Musk’s straight-arm salute, which many are interpreting as a “Sieg Heil.”

“Elon Musk was criticized for his speech at a rally after the inauguration in which he appears to give the Nazi salute. But come on, Elon Musk is not a Nazi,” Che said of the man behind the Tesla Cybertruck. “The Nazis made nice cars.”

Jost followed that up by commenting on the White House posting photos on social media of migrants boarding military planes to be deported.

“And Trump said the deportations won’t stop until a white kid wins the Spelling Bee,” Jost joked.

In a recent episode of Saturday Night Live, the Weekend Update segment took aim at former President Donald Trump’s inauguration and controversial entrepreneur Elon Musk’s recent actions.

The segment began with host Colin Jost joking about Trump’s underwhelming inauguration crowd size, quipping, “It was so empty, even the Russians were like, ‘Is this a protest?’”

But the real burn came when Jost turned his attention to Elon Musk, who has been facing backlash for his recent comments and actions. Jost mocked Musk for his “Nazi” salute at a recent event, saying, “I guess when you’re worth billions, you can afford to buy some tact.”

The segment has been met with mixed reactions, with some viewers praising SNL for calling out Trump and Musk, while others criticized the show for being too political. Regardless, it’s clear that SNL’s Weekend Update isn’t afraid to take on controversial topics and personalities.

  • New PS5 Update Is Out Now, But It Doesn’t Really Do Much

Sony has pushed out a new PS5 system software update today, but it looks like it doesn’t really add much.

According to the PlayStation website, the new Version: 25.01-10.60.00 update only added two things–it improved system software performance and stability, as well as improved the messages and usability on some screens. Sony says the update is rolling out in a phased release, so it may take some time to arrive on your console.

This is a stark contrast to the last PS5 system software update on December 4, which at least improved the process of transferring data from another PS5 and enhanced stability when transferring large amounts of data, such as captures. It’s possible that there are other unlisted changes, but this new update might indeed just be a mundane stability-focused one.

In other PlayStation news, Insomniac founder Ted Price announced his retirement after 30 years and that the studio might make a return to movies. Insomniac knows that players are excited about its upcoming Wolverine game, but refused to comment on whether it’ll release this year.

PlayStation also canceled two live-service games last week, one from Days Gone studio Bend and another from Demon’s Souls remake developer Bluepoint Games. The latter’s project was reportedly a live-service God of War game.

So far, the only confirmed AAA PlayStation Studios game set to launch this year is Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei. However, PS5 players should still feel excited for third-party games such as Death Stranding 2 and Doom: The Dark Ages. For more, check out our look at what to expect from PlayStation in 2025.

    Version: 25.01-10.60.00 Patch Notes

    • We’ve improved system software performance and stability.
    • We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens.

The highly-anticipated new update for the PlayStation 5 has finally been released, but many users are left feeling underwhelmed as it doesn’t bring any significant changes or improvements to the system.

The update, which is version 1.01, mainly focuses on bug fixes and performance enhancements rather than introducing any new features or functionality. While it’s always great to have a more stable and optimized system, some players were hoping for more exciting additions to enhance their gaming experience.

Despite the lackluster nature of this update, it’s still important to keep your console up to date to ensure smooth gameplay and compatibility with new games. Hopefully, Sony will listen to player feedback and incorporate more meaningful updates in the future.

In the meantime, PS5 users can look forward to upcoming game releases and continue to enjoy the cutting-edge technology and immersive gaming experience that the console offers. Let’s hope the next update brings more exciting changes to elevate the PlayStation 5 even further.

  • PlayStation 5 System Software Update 25.01-10.60.00 Starts Rolling Out Today

A new PlayStation 5 system software update started rolling out today, bringing improvements to the system software performance and more.

As confirmed earlier today, the system software update 25.01-10.60.00 started rolling out today in a phased release. According to the update notes, this is a minor system software update, as it brings the usual system software performance and stability improvements as well as improved messages and usability on some screens. Besides these changes, the new system software update doesn’t seem to introduce anything else.

It has been some time since the release of the latest PlayStation 5 major system software update. The 24.06 update launched last September introduced the Welcome hub, personalized 3D audio profiles, Remote Play improvements, and more. Of these, the Welcome hub was definitely the most important new feature, as it introduced a space on the console’s home screen that can be customized using different widgets that display, for example, the battery level for connected accessories, the console’s current storage status, and more. The update also introduced some under-the-hood changes that impacted several games, like Final Fantasy XVI which required another update to fix.

Additional information on the latest PlayStation 5 system software update can be found on the console’s official website.

Attention all PlayStation 5 owners! The highly anticipated System Software Update 25.01-10.60.00 is finally here and will start rolling out today. This update brings a host of new features, improvements, and bug fixes to enhance your gaming experience.

Some of the key highlights of this update include improved system performance, stability, and security enhancements. Additionally, there are new customization options for the user interface, including new themes and wallpapers.

This update also includes improvements to the PlayStation Store, making it easier to find and purchase games, DLC, and other content. The update also includes updates to the system’s media playback capabilities, making it easier to stream and play your favorite movies and TV shows.

Overall, this update is a must-have for all PlayStation 5 users, so be sure to download and install it as soon as it becomes available. Stay tuned for more information on the new features and improvements included in System Software Update 25.01-10.60.00. Happy gaming! #PlayStation5 #SystemUpdate #GamingCommunity

  • A Major Update About ‘Silo’ Season 3 On Apple TV+

Silo just wrapped up its much different season 2 last week, one which divorced its main character, Juliette, from the rest of the cast for the entire season. Now, it turns out that season 3 is going to be even more different than both previous seasons, according to showrunner Graham Yost.

I was surprised to see that the two characters in the final few minutes of the episode were announced to have their actors return as series regulars, Ashley Zukerman as Daniel and Jessica Henwick as Helen. Now we know why, a huge chunk of season 3 is going to be set far before the destruction that leads to life in the Silos. Here’s showrunner Graham Yost via TVLine:

“In the book Shift (the second one, part of which will be adapted for season 3), Juliette doesn’t appear until the last page, right? It’s about this silo (No. 18) but it’s also the origin story of the whole Silo project.”

But don’t worry about a Rebecca Ferguson-free season:

“I would say that we have Rebecca Ferguson playing Juliette, and she is not just going to be in the last scene of the season.”

All of this may not be news to fans of the original books, but it seems that things will be changed somewhat significantly if Juliette is still going to have a major storyline when she really didn’t during this part of the source material.

What we know so far based on the final scene of season 2 is that Iran set off some sort of dirty bomb in the US, which the characters seem to be treating as a sort of 9/11 (I’m sure many, many people died), and now the question is how the US will respond. Obviously the response…leads to something disastrous, but we don’t yet know if just this area has been destroyed near the Silos or if its truly the entire world. But 300 years later, it’s still not safe to go out.

It’s unclear what sort of weapon would linger for that long. The nuclear bombs we have in present day should not have insta-death effects that last centuries, but given how the Silo members die outside, it does not seem like its radiation that’s killing them (though clearly the Iran bomb was radioactive, as per the scans to get into the bar in the last scene). Is it some sort of biological weapon? And yet the landscape is actually destroyed with some sort of bombing, it seems. Confusing. Maybe the AI is simply killing all of them on purpose somehow as they leave.

It will certainly be a huge departure for the show to spend a lot of time way in the past to explain all this. The show has not followed the pattern of one book per season. There are three books, and it’s been confirmed that it will take four seasons to finish the show. As we can see, we’re just really getting into the second book now. And I think most fans cannot wait.
